Dell Dimension 3000 skips Dell splash screen and BIOS

Q: Dell Dimension 3000 skips Dell splash screen and BIOS

Hi all,
I have a spare computer from work, but I do not know the password to log in, and so would like to wipe it. Ergo, I decided to try and boot the computer using a USB thumb drive with Ubuntu on it, so as to wipe the windows partition on the hard drive and then install Ubuntu. The computer boots normally to the Windows XP login screen. When I press F2 or F12, there is no display output. I have tried this with a variety of monitors and with two D-SUB cables (one at a time). These are the Samsung LT27B551EW, LG 27EA63V-P and Dell Rev A00. None of them show either the Dell splash screen or the BIOS screen. I have tried pressing F2 and F12 at strategic intervals (every 2 seconds) but still there is no display output. I also know that I was able to access the BIOS on the same computer a few months ago, but I forgot which displays I used then - I had to wait for permission to wipe the hard drive.
I have also looked up this problem in a number of other places, and found that this is supposedly due to an incompatibility of some kind with the monitor. However, I am not sure as to how I might go about fixing this issue, as I do not have any other monitors or cables which work with the Dell - all my other cables are either HDMI or other sorts of cable which do not plug in to the Dell. If there is a way to use the hard drive and wipe it without accessing the BIOS I would also be grateful to hear about that too.

Try connecting the USB stick before you power the system on.
You can try this too:

Power off, and unplug power cord from rear of PC
Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
Reconnect power cord to rear of PC
Power on and immediately tap F12 a couple of times

Problem occurred overnight. Was working yesterday! This Dell Dimension
3000 has a pre-bios boot failure (evidently?). None of the diagnostic lights
are lit, and the front power light is solid amber. I can hear it power up and the fan runs.

I have disconnected everything and reconnected, reseated the memory modules etc. Tried a second power cable and video cable. Researching led me to believe there is something amiss on the motherboard.

Any troubleshooting advice would be appreciated.

Dell Dimension 3000 Boots to black screen
Off the back of my last post,a year or so ago ( solved-dell-dimension-3000-boots-to-black-screen) I have another similar but slightly different problem.
My Dell Dimension 3000 is unsurprisingly on its last legs and I think the predominant issue is with the Windows Installation.

Dell Dimension 3000 (Celeron)
Windows XP Home edition SP2
(**To my knowledge I haven't got SP3, (through custom/selective updating of Win Updates), but XP may have updated to it anyway without my knowing it).

**Hardware changes made**

-512K RAM to 2GB RAM modules
-Wireless PCI card
(Both have been on the computer for a few years and have been working fine)

The Problem:
When switched on, the boot information and DELL splash screen are displayed and then followed by a black screen with no cursor (different to the issue I've had before). There appears to be unusually little Hard-drive activity at this point - Although I have accessed the hard drive via Puppy Linux, backed up the files to an external hard-drive and seem to have access to most files/folders. Furthermore, I also have no access to safe mode.

First Attempted Fix:
I backed up the system using a Puppy Linux CD and then tried to make an up to date Acronis backup, although the graphics were all odd for some reason and the screen was almost unreadable.
I carefully following the steps given in my previous p... Read more

hi fructis, two things to ask initially: are you sure the hard drive is ok, it may be worth downloading the manufacturer's diagnostics just to be sure; are the graphics on board or a separate card. TBH I'm a bit worried about your second option anyway.

I had Windows 10 on this PC with the latest BIOS update favoring Windows 10. However, decided to downgrade back to Windows 7 using a fresh install I got on my USB drive. Everything works fine, but the only thing I noticed is that it skips the BIOS splash screen and goes straight to the Starting Windows screen. I went into my BIOS today (B85M-DS3H) and found that 'fast boot' is disabled. I didn't install Windows 7 using UEFI as far as I know as the Detected boot Environment line in the setupact.txt file state BIOS and not UEFI. I made sure to have it set to the optimized default settings after installing Windows 7.

I don't see this as a major problem as I can still access the BIOS and the OS is working, but I'm just curious if this is normal or bad.

A:Windows 7 skips BIOS splash screen

There is nothing to worry about. On my board (remember the BIOS is the board and has nothing to do with software) sometimes I see the BIOS flash screen and sometimes I don't. There is nothing to worry about.

Some BIOS allow you to disable the splash screen so you don't see anything also fast boot would also disable it (but you checked that was disabled anyway).

I am at my wits end .
I lost USB on my Dell dimension 3000 and after a lot of heartache re-installed XP home on my PC.After installing the system perfectly and all the little DEll bits that they insist of putting in everything seemed to be working perfectly (for once).Except USB
If i boot up with a Memory stick inserted in one of the USB hubs it detects it and says what it is , but when you look in My computer to access it ,its not there.
I have looked in the System icon under hardware and USB all looks clean no yellow question marks and all the items when you expand them say they are all working perfectly.
I have managed to get USB printers working (via a hub) only by installing the software which then detects them (not via the PC picking them up and saying it has detected them)
one other item of info is that USB doesnt work via a hub or plugged directly into the ports on front of PC .
My wife who is a teacher says it is going out of the window soon as she uses a USB memory stick to transfer all her data from school to Home .
Please anybody help as there is nothing worse than a woman who expects a man to know what is happening when i obviously dont,

A:USB On Dell dimension 3000

Hi pmar2uk. I apologize ahead of time if you have already done this, but sometimes the simplest answers are the most obvious. When you reinstalled XP, and the "other Dell bits", did you reinstall all necessary drivers off of the "Dell Resource Drivers Reinstallation" CD that came with your Dimension (I have a Dimension 4400, an older model).
You would usually need to reinstall the chipset driver first, then all the others from the " Drivers" CD. If you did not receive, or lost that CD, you can download the drivers from the website. Or, if your computer is still under warranty, you can call Dell and request for them to send you a new one (tell them you never received one with the system).
Again, if you already knew to try this, I apologize, but I figiured it was worth a shot.
Good luck

Hi all, just signed up here. I did ask this Q on the intro thread but after I read that no questions should be asked there!

I had my Dimension 3000 in standby when we had a power-cut and next time I looked I had the flashing amber power light. After reading up on possible causes I disconnected everything, lifter the bonnet and popped the battery. Checked battery was OK and refitted then just connected the power lead. I noticed a single green flash (accompanied by a jolt of the fans) then the usual amber flashing light. Green light in m/b was on. So I just went round and re-fitted all power leads and gave everything a wiggle. I even lifted the RAM. Tried again - same. Put the RAM back and thought I'd try a different mains socket (why not?) but as I plugged the lead into the PC - BANG! Power lead 5A fuse is OK but no lights at all now......

Any idea if a fresh PS (HP-P2507FWP) will fix things?

Many thanks guys.

A:New PSU for Dell Dimension 3000

That is a base line computer with a barely adequate power supply and the simplest, least expensive of motherboards. You can replace the power supply easily for $35 or so... and with a used one for half that. You might want to borrow a PSU to power up and be certain the problem is not the system board itself.
Look at the back of your case to get the configuration right, as many power supplies will not fit due to the placement of the power socket vs what the case allows. You do not need to use a Dell PSU, but you need to assure the power socket is in the right place.

If you’re like me you may have sound issues. My sound was glitchee, and I could not find the problem. One day I did find the fix and this is what I did;

Go into the BIOS and check that the UDMA is on. Turn it on if it is not. Set the primary and secondary IDE to auto. Set the IDE hard drive Acoustics mode to Performance. Boot back to Windows and go into the device manager and verify that UDMA is set on both IDE controllers, and if there not enable them. Now run a sound file and see if it works without problems. This fix worked for me and I hope it works for you.

My dell dimension 3000 won't turn on, when i try to, it doesn't make any sounds and just blinks a yellow light where the green light should be.

I put it into storage for a while, and when i went to use it a couple months ago, it showed a screen that said i needed to call a number, but it turned off too quickly. I put it back into storage after trying everything i could think of and just used other computers. Now i don't even get that screen anymore, just the flashing light. What can i do?

A:Dell Dimension 3000 won't turn on

Take the machine into a local repair facility and have them test the power supply unless you have a power supply tester.

Also, have them "jump" a known good power supply to the motherboard to verify the board is good. Both tests should take less than 30 minutes and the cost should be minimal.

Yeah i know. Dell Dimension 3000...old as a dinosaur, But its all i got for now.
My question is...Will I need a new PSU when adding the new RAM? In the future im also going to be adding a new CPU.

Is it possible to add a Intel Core 2 Duo CPU?

A:Adding 2gb DDR to a Dell Dimension 3000

Adding memory should not necessitate a PSU upgrade unless you're really currently borderline. Changing the CPU not be a problem unless there's a very big difference between you have now & the one you intend to put.

I doubt you'll be able to run a Core 2 Duo on that machine though but I'm not sure as I can't seem to find any info on such a possibility.

Okay, I have an old dinosaur of a computer in a Dell Dimension 3000 that I got back in 2005.  Starting several months ago, I would get little blurry regions on my monitor or a barely visible black line.  The blurry areas would kind of shimmer.  If I wiggled my VGA cable a bit, these areas would either move to a new area or disappear altogether.  This went on for some time and I wasn't overly concerned.
About a month ago I was watching a video when all of a sudden my PC crashed and I was staring at a frozen image of garbled colors.  I held in the power button to restart and was fine for two days until when I tried to boot up my PC,  my monitor said that there was no signal coming from the computer before it went into standby mode (the light on the monitor turned yellow).
I tried all sorts of things to get it running again by searching around online.  I removed my RAM sticks to clean them before reinserting them. removed dust, etc.  A few of the capacitors were bent on the motherboard and I seemed to be able to fix things by bending them back in place.  None of them had blown their caps, but some of their silver tops had a blueish tint to them.
I got by the crashes and no signal detected through doing this for a couple weeks.  A couple days would pass without issues but then they would reappear.  It seemed to get a little bit harder over time.  Yesterday was an issue.  All my usual tricks weren't working f... Read more

There isn't any way of fixing 20 year old computers with physically failing parts and not spend money.
Any money spent getting these systems working again would be a waste.
10 year old models starting with the Optiplex GX620 are better and faster and still upgradeable.
The cost of systems like the GX620 or better can be had WITH WINDOWS 7 for around $100.
For slightly more you can get a GX760 or better tower with windows 7.
These machines when they have 3 gigs or more ram can be upgraded all the way to windows 10 with little or no issue.
If you get one before July the upgrade to windows 10 is free.
If you get it without an OS you could install your Dell XP if you have the disc.

I suppose that everyone who has purchased a Dimension 3000 knows how loud it is. I was hoping to fix that by replacing the fan with one that was bigger and could cool at lower revolutions, therefore being quieter. But I have run into a problem. I can't figure out how to fit the new double-ball bearing 120mm antec fan into the place where the 100mm stock fan goes. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

A:How do I fit a 120mm fan in a Dell Dimension 3000?

Cut a hole in the side of the case... or get a body and fender man to do it. A knife designed for cutting thin sheet metal will do the job if your careful and patient.

The 120 mm fan will never fit the 100 mm hole...

You might just look for a much better quality 100 fan. Some have better designed blades and run very quietly while moving a lot more air.

From personal Experience, having one of the best PCI cards you can get, (or close to it anyways), the max ram for the system, (2 GHz), And an 80GB hard drive, you figure you could get by with it right, since the minimum graphics requirement is 512mb Video Card, and 1 GB RAM? WRONG!!!

Unless you want to constantly Reboot your System, trying to get the Delled thing on, Then don't even bother. The latest Bios is Revision A03, released in 2007, which is the Era that Vista came about, The premature seed of Windows 7.

Therefore, until they decide to Revise the BIOS for the Dimension 3000 to fit the standards of Almighty 7, We are stuck with either XP or Vista.

My friend's dell dimension won't turn on. Pushing the power button does nothing. The computer was working fine recently then there was a power outage around the time. It doesn't seem like the PSU because I had it plugged in with the case open and there was a glowing green light on the motherboard which disappeared upon unplugging the computer.

Now here is exactly what happens when pushing the power button. No fans and/or indicator of being on. Nothing, no harddrive etc.
It really makes me think it is the switch.

How would I go about fixin this.

Darn it. I have no idea how, but I have been infected. I booted up yesterday and got a svchost error:
The instruction at "0x765ecc5a" referenced memory at "0x00000058". The memory could not be read. Also I got a Generic host process error as well. After closing the two message boxes, I tried first to repair the window update service as it seemed to be a common problem for others with the same problem. This included verifying that the updates were on as well as re-registering certain files. This was to no avail. I chose this route because my hard drive is dangerously full and I am about to swap it out and therefore thought maybe this was a result of that. Well, after no results, I ran a Super Anti Spyware scan and voila I had some infected files. Then I ran MBAM and found some more. After finishing I ran MSSE and came up with nothing, so I booted into safe mode and reran SAS and MBAM with no new hits. I notice that now, my wireless network does not connect (acquiring connection indefinitely) unless I either repair the connection, or unplug and replug the adapter into the USB port.
What is next?
Thank you in advance...

Hi i'm new here!!

Well 'im thinking to upgrade the Mobo of this old PC

GIGABYTE GA-H55M-USB3 LGA 1156 Intel H55 HDMI USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Thats the mobo, with an I5 750 Processor and Corsair 550 Watts

This will work in that case....?

P.S: I'm not too good with the english

A:Upgrading a Dell Dimension 3000

You have to make sure the form factor will fit your case.
That mobo wil not fit into your old case, you should just buy a new cheap case that fits your new mobo's form factor and swap everything over. Make sure you have enough ide\sata cables with your new mobo to connect your devices such as your cd rom, floppy drive hard drive etc. If you need to you can buy cheap sata to ide converters and ide to sata.

Sorry to ask such as stupid question, but I own a Dell Dimension 3000 with a Celeron D processor, 2.4Ghz.

I want to buy a stick of memory, but I'm concerned regarding the chipset (I don't know where to find it, and I'm on a different computer).

Are any of these chipsets on the Dimension 3000?

VIA P4X266A - VIA KT266/333 - VIA KT600 (except ASUS KT600) - VIA PT800 - SIS 645
SIS 648 - 648FX - SIS 746FX - KM400 - K8T800 - KT880 - KT 400 - KT 400A
SIS 661FX - SIS 655 - SIS 650GX - SIS 650 - NFORCE 250GB - ULI CHIPSETS - INTEL 915

Any help would be appreciated.

I just purchased a dell dimension 3000 motherboard to replace my existing dell 2350 board. I was able to mount the new board but my only problem is the power switch button connection on the 2350 is not compatible with the new one. Is there any way I can power up the computer without the power switch? I'm looking to buy a power button for the dimension 3000 motherboard but in the mean time, would like to power up my pc since i'm running a web server. Appreciate any reponds.

my mom gave me one of her friends computers to repair because orgininally the boot screen was cycling so i was just going to reinstall xp. but today when i tried turning it on i got a short buzz and then nothing. i opened it up too try and see what was wrong. the green motherboard power light stays on. and the light on the front flashes an amber color for about two seconds. all the fans turn on and everything. Also none of the lights on the back glow at all, so it leads me to believe its a motherboard problem. But since it started up the first time i did it i'm not exactly sure. I was grounded each time i touched it, which is why im wondering what could of possibly happened. Any help would be great, if need be i can take a video or a soundclip of the beep for further help

A:dell dimension 3000 not powering on at all

Things you can try.

Uplug the PC power cord, then hold in the power button for 15 seconds to discharge the motherboard. (do this Every time you disconnect the power cord)

Open the case and unplug all devices power, hard drives, cd drives ect.
Remove any add in cards, (make note of their positions, be sure to put them back in the same place later)

This leaves the motherboard as the only device connected to the power supply, try powering up the PC, if you get the bios post screen, shut it down by disconnecting the power cord. (Do Not let it boot into Windows) Plug one device in at a time and try powering up, when you get to a yellow light again, you have found the problem hardware.

If it does not power up after the first step, remove memory modules except for one, try powering up, if no joy, swap in a different memory module. If it powers up you have a bad module.

Last step if no joy from above steps, disconnect everything except the motherboard power cables, remove all memory, power up, if the diagnostic lights (ABCD lights on the back panel) do not light up at all, it is a failed motherboard or power supply.

*Be sure to disconnect the power cord and discharge the motherboard any time you connect or disconnect a device or do any work inside the PC.

This is kind of a new one for me....

One of my clients Dells, a Dimension 3000 (P4 3.0ghz / 512mb/ standard PCI intel board) has recently gotten very loud with its COOLING fan spinning way to fast. This happens with the system being IDLE but seems to be worse with a light-load of work being used.

As with pretty much most Dells - the CPU temp/ FAN RPM monitors are blocked from end users and not displayed in BIOS. If I put my hand over part of the rear-air vent - the FAN will spin EVEN FASTER.

How these Dells are set up (in case ya don't know) The CPU Cooler fan is NOT attached to the CPU heat-sink. Dells uses a "air scoop" that covers the Heat-sink and the rear-case fan... so it SUCKS in cooler air through the heat sink and out the back.

So, this kind of tells me that when I am covering the rear air-vent, the CPU could be getting hotter which is telling the BIOS/Mobo to speed up the fan to cool the CPU. The inside of the case IS CLEAN - nothing blocking the air-ways. The Heat-sink is clean as well.

The PC is out of warranty - and typical Dell - the BIOS has no options or information to help. My theory is that the mobo maybe confused and is running the fan faster than it needs to be.... Or if its over-heating, why? The office is not hot, even with the cover off, it makes no difference... if the mobo is shot, it sure isn't worth repairing.

Any ideas?

If you're serious about upgrading the CPU, make sure you visit Dell's support site for the Dimension 3000 and download the BIOS update (A01 to A03). This update enables the PC to accept the larger CPU's. Visit either Ebay or for the best CPU prices. If you're on a budget and don't want to spend a lot on the CPU, then don't bother with the Hyper-Threading CPU or the newer Norwood chips. A:Dell dimension 3000? Win7

Id stay with xp for that, and if its old faithful Id keep it that way. Youd be better off
just buying a newer computer with windows 7 installed. For that machine to run well
you would have to upgrade the memory, and possibly the video card, let alone the bios
and other issues you'll run into. Given that's a 32 bit processor you be limited there as well.

My trusty old (5 years or so) Dimension has finally sat down on me. Fails to power up to the point where BIOS talks to display. Power light on front of cabinet is solid amber. Have tried swopping/reducing memory, removing all option cards, removing all disks, DVDs, &c. All voltages measure OK on P1, except for pin 14 (PS_ON), which reads zero. Pin 8 (POK) reads 5.1V, but of course, I've no idea what these would be were the darn thing working. At no time do any of the four LEDs at the rear show any signs of life. Anyone out there got any ideas? I'd hate to buy a PSU and then find it was the motherboard. Although I worked on computers (large systems - yes, I know, I'm a dinosaur!) before I retired, I'm no expert now; but my shakey hands are still capable of holding a voltmeter.

Okay so lately I've noticed that my PC isn't displaying the BIOS splash screen anymore and skips straight to the Windows login screen. It didn't really bother me until today when I wanted to boot into Ubuntu and I couldn't select which OS I wanted to use.

I'm pretty sure the problem isn't the BIOS itself since I unplugged all the peripherals except the speakers, removed all the RAM and the BIOS did beep repeatedly. And given enough time, I can boot into windows (and only windows ).

Apparently people have had this problem before and all the solutions I've read such as "Press 'del' to go into your BIOS!" really doesn't help since I can't see anything in my BIOS menu.

The only solution that made sense to me was that my CMOS battery could be dying. I haven't changed my rig since I built it in 2009. The only significant event that happened recently might be that Windows updated itself.

-PC doesn't display BIOS splash screen
-Can't see messages displayed by system
-When windows does bootup, everything runs just fine
-Haven't changed rig for ~3 years

A:PC skips BIOS splash screen and goes straight to login screen

This is normally a BIOS setting called "Fast boot" or something such. It might have toggled off due to low battery causing a reset. This may also explain why a BIOS Boot Menu no longer appears.

It won't hurt to change your CMOS battery and might help. You can reset your BIOS at the same time which is also indicated: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

Do you have Ubuntu (wisely) on another HD so you need the BIOS Boot menu to show up when you press it's hot key? If so make sure all HD's are detected in BIOS setup and BIOS Boot order is set to preferred HD first. If BIOS Boot menu still doesn't show up using hotkey, change boot order to other OS HD to see if it will in fact boot.

I have a Dell inspiron 530 that will not boot. Its running xp professional with a core 2 quad. When I turn it on i hear one beep and it sticks at the boot splash screen. F2 and F12 do nothing. So far I have tried the following:

1)Swapped hard drive out with a known working one.
2)Removed both sticks of 1gig ram and placed them in different slots.
3)Swapped out one stick of ram at a time to determine if one is defective.
4)Swapped out all ram with known working ram.
5)Removed radeon graphics card.
6)Tried to do a repair on windows from a disk but I cannot get into the boot settings.
7)Tried unplugging everything except the monitor and power cord.

After attempting these steps I still receive the same results everytime. I was thinking about removing and re-seating the processor, but I figure someone with more knowledge than me would have another suggestion for me to try. I fear the worst for this PC assuming it is the motherboard or processor. No new hardware or software was added to this system when the issue started. Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

The laptop appears to register if I have selected one of those two options but will not load after the Dell screen progress bar has reached 100%I have stumbled across a couple of posts on the internet suggesting that the issue maybe motherboard related ?Does anybody have suggestions on what I can do to resolve this issue ?Thanks in advance.

What is the exact system model? Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter?
Download the service manual - - enter the service tag and download the manual and disconnect the adapter and battery and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds and try powering on the system with adapter only / battery only and check.
Based on your system model, check if you are able to remove and reseat the memory modules if possible.
Disconnect the HDD and check if the system goes past the Dell logo.
Try the onboard diagnostics - press and hold the fn key + power button to turn on the system and it should initiate the diagnostics. Check for any possible beeps codes.
If nothing works, then I would suspect a faulty motherboard.
If the system is under warranty, Please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name, Phone#, Address and Email). If there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call -

A:Fried Dell Dimension 3000 HDD and transplant

Have you tried just putting a clean drive in and doing a clean xp install? I assume the 3000 does come with a xp disc, and not a "recovery partition" built into the hd.

It doesn't really work well to just transfer one hd from one pc to the next, as the pc's are different. If the pc's were the same or very similar a transfer would probably work. If you have an xp cd for the xp on the 60gb drive you tried, you could try a "repair install".

I doubt you can get any hacked bios's for that model, although it could be possible. You could get a new motherboard, like this, it's what I put in my dell, when I upgraded to get an agp slot. I like it.
It does take some work to replace a motherboard though, as you have to take almost everything out of the case.

Hi guys,

I have a problem on my computer, Dell Dimension 3000, after I upgraded the new PCI graphics card yesterday. I followed the steps by step guides that came with the product, and it's working fine and good. However, when I play games online for a long time, the graphics are starting to get all messed up. I bought the nViDiA GeForce 8400 GS Graphics Card with 512 MB DDR2. Before buying this graphics card, I have been browsing the Internet about what to buy and such, but when I went to Best Buy, they told me this is the only graphics card that can work with my Dell Dimension 3000, so I bought it anyway.
So my question to you guys, "Is this a good graphics card for my computer or shall i buy a better one online?" Please tell me what you think, and by the way, one thing confused me is that in my computer, there is 3 slots of PCI card slot, but when I put the new Graphics card, they asked me to replace the old one with a new one. So I don't know if I should have left it there and install the new one on the other slot since there's 3 slots anyway? Is it also the reason why my graphics card is acting all crazy?
And for my last question is, "Should I get a new Power Supply for my Computer?
" because I heard with the new graphics card, a new power supply is needed with at least around 400-500 Watts. But, others also say that power supply can't be upgraded easily because it is attached to the motherb... Read more

A:Dell Dimension 3000 Upgrades Problems

Hi 6one9,

After taking a brief glimpse of the computer specs and the card specs, it looks like the card is actually a PCI-e interface as opposed to the Dell Dimension 3000 which only has PCI expansion slots.

That aside, the card you bought is a decent card that should play all games at a moderate graphic level. The power supply that you have seems to do the job. If you needed one, you would notice right away when the computer would not start up.

What is the service tag on the computer?

A:I need help upgrading mi dell dimension 3000's graphics

Hi jeremy and welcome to techspot

there isn't much you can do graphics wise on that machine.

good graphics cards come in PCI-Express (newer) or AGP (older). your Dimension3000 doesn't have either, it only has standard PCI slots.

you can get a PCI graphics card, but it will never be very good. even if the card itself has good specs it will always be severely limited by the slow and bandwidth starved PCI bus.

however... graphics don't get much worse than Intel integrated graphics (like dells use), so even a PCI graphics card would be a significant improvement.

as far as I know, the best PCI graphics card is the geforce 6200

while that card is cheap and may allow you to play certain games. it will only allow you to play on low settings. if you want to get into gaming, you should consider a computer upgrade. if you're budget is really tight, you may be able to get away with upgrading the mobo and video card and reusing the rest.

good luck

Hi all,

Tried to boot up PC today and flashing amber light. Checked Dell site. Flashing amber indicates possible internal power problem. Opened casing and checked all power connections. All in place as required. Definitely power to the mother board as the green onboard LED is lit when power supply is plugged in. PC still indicating power problems (amber light still flashing). Hi crymz and welcome to Techspot

Dells (like most brand-named Pc's) often use cheap motherboards which are very picky about RAM. I ran into the same issue when trying to upgrade my mother's Dell Demension 2300.

your computer beeps when you have your new RAM stick installed, is that stick combined with another (older) RAM stick or is it installed by itself? if it's by itself and you get error beeps when booting then that RAM stick will never work with that board, but if it only beeps when installed next to another (older) RAM stick then they may be imcompatible. try the new RAM stick by itself and see what happens...

Hi, hopefully someone here can help me! I've recently bought a new monitor, dell S2309W, but unfortunately I can't get the resolution on my computer so I'm stuck with a super stretched screen. Pretty annoying. After looking through lots of forums and the dell site it seems I might just need a new graphics card as the inbuilt one possibly can't support the required resolution (1920x1080), I'm stuck on 1280x1024 which is the maximum. I've found out the computer, a dell dimension 3000, only has PCI slots, no PCI-E or AGP, so I'm quite limited on what graphics card I can get.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what will fix my monitor resolution problem?

Although my research says that the best PCI cards are the FX 5600 and FX 5700LE, I have been unable to find them anywhere, including eBay. I have been able to find the FX 5200, 128 MB. Cost is approximately $90 CDN. I would be interested in comments as to whether installing the 5200 would result in a significant improvement over the existing Intel integrated graphics. I have been advisaed to stay away from Radon cards for this particular PC.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

A:Dell Dimension 3000 - Upgrade with FX 5200

it's not like any graphics card running in a pci interface would really boost your performance. in fact, the limitations of the pci bus often result in the add-in card lowering performance when compared to the integrated graphics, which use a faster bus. i advise against trying to mess with your dell to add performance. even if you were able to get a graphics card properly installed and working, the performance returns would be dissapointing at best.

Well that's not strictly true. I can sometimes get it to work by sitting there for half an hour pressing the on button hundreds of times (if I'm lucky) When it does boot everything seems to work OK. Other times it just won't boot at all. No fans turn on. No diagnostic lights on the back of the unit. There is a green LED on the motherboard which always glows when I turn it on at the wall.

I've replaced the motherboard with an identical but new one and same problem. I took out the hard drive and had it checked at PC world - they say it seems fine.

Anyone any idea what the problem is? Is is the Processor? (Pentium 4) Is it the Power supply? Anything else?

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I am working on my mothers decrepit old computer, and I have run into a problem. The tower refuses to recognize that the speakers are plugged in! The first thing I did was hook up the speakers (Model No. A215) to my Ipod to make sure they still functioned properly. Everything sounded good, so next I searched for the driver. On the Dell website, I typed in the Express Service Code, and was presented with a page stating all the drivers for this model. There were no audio drivers, so after searching a little more I found someone with a similar problem here. I downloaded the driver and began installing when an error message popped up with the message "The audio driver files do not support your computer hardware." Could I get some help?

A:Dell Dimension 3000 Won't recognize speakers

Can you check device manager and post the audio driver description with the exclamation point?

Im currently looking to upgrade my dell dimension 3000 from integrated graphics by getting a pci card. I've read a number of forums and reviews and heard good stuff about the Geforce 6200, and also a bit about the Radeon x1550. Looking on ebay I also found these:

Geforce FX 5200 256mb - £25.99 buy it now price

Radeon 9250 256mb - £17.50 current bid price

I would post links but not allowed as my post count is too low. How annoying.

And also a few 128mb versions of these two for cheaper. I'm not looking to spend loads, and will prob just look out for one on ebay if I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My PC spec is:

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2
System Model: Dimension 3000
BIOS: Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A02
Processor: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.66GHz
Memory: 254MB RAM (Will be upgrading to 1Gb soon!!)DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
DVD drive: Model: TEAC DVD+RW DV-W58E
Graphics: Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller
HD: 80Gb
Networking: Linksys Dual-Band Wireless A+G PCI Adapter ver 1.2
PSU: 250w

Can't find info on MOBO spec. The Machine has 3 PCI ports i think. It's neatly tucked in corner of room and couldn't be bothered with hassle of getting at it to open it and check.

If you could recommend which card would be best suited would greatly appreciate it.

A:Dell Dimension 3000 PCI graphics upgrade?

either Geforce 6200 or the Radeon x1550 would be good cards. Stay away from the Geforce FX 5200 256mb or the Radeon 9250 256mb as both are old and not going to help u much.

# years old, runs like it is out of gas.....Windows XP Home Ed 2002. Ran great then turned on and it was slow to start (2-4 Minutes) , every program drags

A:Dell Dimension 3000 Runs SLOW !!!

In most cases, issues dealing with slow computers can be attributed to viruses/malware. Sometimes loading new software (or software updates) can slow down a computer because of the size of the program relative to your computer's hardware specs, but 95% of the problems I've ever run across as far as slow computers are concerned (especially abrupt slowness) are due to viruses/malware. So my question to you is have you run a virus/malware scan lately? I'd start there especially if you haven't loaded any new software recently.

A:Dell dimension 3000 connection issue

Are you connecting via a wire or wirelessly via a wifi adapter?

Click on Start and then Run.

Type the following command in the Open: text box, and then hit the Enter key or click on the OK button.

Expand the network adapters item and see if anything is displayed and if you see any red X or exclamation points.

If you're using a wired connection do you see any activity where the network cable plugs into the back of the PC? You may have a green or yellow light flashing.

A:Dell Inspiron 530 stuck at dell splash/boot screen

Try clearing the CMOS, might be the solution. if that doesn't work you could try flashing the bios, here's the documention on how to do both. Just follow the steps exactly and you'll be fine, it requires you to go into the actual computer to do it.

hope it works, good luck

hi all,
I am having a weird problem. The BIOS randomly will not recognize the hard drive. I put it in a different computer and it works, so there is nothing wrong with the drive. I also put another hard drive into the dell, and it sees that one no problem. All of the jumpers are correct for the other drives in the dell. I am stumped. as a random note, never in my life have i seen a dell that works with no problems. =P

Thanks in advanced.

A:Dell dimension 3000 will not recognize hard drive

On the Dimension 3000, the drives have to be set to Cable Select (CS) Though obviously if it works at random, that is probably not the problem. On a Dell that age it could be a dodgey cable, or if this is the original drive that came with the computer it could be a drive that is on its way to the big Cyber Dump in the sky. I have a 3000 that I recently had to replace the Factory original drive in because it had problems booting to windows, then the drive eventually just died.

hi tech guy forums,

I have a standard Dell Dimension 3000 pc at home that i regularly use for gaming. At the moment I have a Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 graphics card installed to help with gaming. I am interested in purchasing a new graphics card and was wondering if, in particular if a Nvidia 9600 GT graphics card will fit and comply with my computer. I am also upgrading my RAM form 512MB to 2GB if this helps in any way. If you have any other recommended graphics cards that may work with my pc please let me know.

A:Dell Dimension 3000 graphics card update

Your Dimension 3000 only has PCI slots for a graphics card, correct?

(according to dell, and my own experience, likely yes)

Without a PCI-Express or AGP card slot, gaming can not improve very much.

I also have a Dimension 3000 : P4 2.8 GHz - 768mb RAM, with a Geforce 6200 [256mb ddr2] PCI card. When it comes to gaming, it is outperformed by my old 1.4 GHz Athlon XP - 512 RAM - Geforce Ti-4200 [64mb], simply because the older computer has an AGP video slot ... the PCI bus is a VERY limiting factor.

A:Graphic Card upgrade in a Dell Dimension 3000?

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

While it is true your computer doesn`t have AGP or pci-e slots, it does have 3 pci slots.

So, a pci graphics card upgrade is possible and would be far better than your current onboard graphics chip.

Take a look at this excellent thread HERE.

I hope someone can help. I'm not fully knowledgeable with computers but know the basics.
I bought a second hand Dell Dimension 3000 running Windows 7.
I have no sound.
The drivers are installed in Device Manager (Realtec AC'97), and also (Uniplex Half Modem) both under sound, video controllers. There are no exclamation marks in device manager. All drivers are up to date.
Dell diagnostic and Microsoft Fix it both say everything is ok.
There is no sound from internal speaker. I tried external speakers via green jack at back & front of machine but there is no option to select these speakers.
If I try to play music then nothing happens.
When I access the sound option there is a green 'equalizer bar' which goes up and down to tell music is playing...but I can't hear anything.
I have checked and mute is not selected-volume is set to 100%.
I opened the machine and behind the jack plug seems to be closed with no removable parts.
I downloaded the latest Audio Driver from Dell but it says its not compatible with my OS.

I think I've covered everything I've done.

A:Dell Dimension 3000 No sound but everything installed correctly.

I forgot to mention that when I connected the external speakers there was no option to select them in Audio Manager.

Brand new to the forum - bear with me if this has been bounced around before.I knew when I purchased the Dimension 3000 that it was not a "gamer's" machine but still I am disappointed with its graphic capabilities. I understand that my only option to improve the graphics short of changing motherboard, etc is to upgrade with a PCI card. Apparently Nvidia cards on the order of Fx 5600, 5700LE are pretty good cards as far as PCi is concerned. Not easy to find here in Winnipeg, Canada, but I'm looking.

What I'm wondering is if there are any Dell owners with similar PC's who may have gone this route? if so, results? am I correct in assuming that even with only PCI card upgrade, it will be a big improvement over onboard graphics? (Intel Extreme Graphics2 82865G). If I upgrade I will probably have retailer install as I am not that comfortable with the idea of trying it myself.

Any help/comments/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You should have an AGP slot so I'd foreget about a PCI card if you want to do any real gaming. Radeon 9800 Pro's and XT's have gone down in price lately. Those would be a good match for your system. Id also get a 256mb card if you can afford it. A PCI card will be a big improvement over onboard graphics but unless you can find a FX5700 SE, the other PCI video cards arent going to work well for newer games.

Thought I'd share my experiences with my 11 year old Dell Dimension 3000 desktop, which obviously doesn't owe me a thing. Recently, it stopped booting completely, all 4 status lights off and no preboot screen  ... .
I tried everything, reseating RAM, CPU, reconnecting all interconnect cables etc. Nothing worked. Seemed to fail at preboot. I concluded it was probably a MB or HD failure.  I have a good more recent Dell I5 Studio laptop, but this Dimension desktop has a very good Creative X-Fi Elite Pro PCI sound card installed that I have used extensively.  So I determined it was time to upgrade to a newer PC. But no new PCs that I could find have PCI slots ... they are all PCI-e (except for some older Dells  7010, 9010, 9020 as per a post in this forum). Therefore I started to considered the refurb market.
The "dead" Dell Dimension 3000 owes me nothing, but I decided as 1 last check to remove the 2 installed PCI cards,  a D-Link wireless adapter, and the Creative sound card. I removed the D-Link card first, tried powering up and VOILA ... it boots up with no problems!! Unbelievable luck. Reinstalled the D-Link card and won't boot. Reproducible results. Without the D-Link PCI card installed, everything works exactly as expected including the PCI sound card. Put the D-Link in another available PCI slot ... same problem.
So it looks like probably a fried PCI D-Link card somehow loading down the MB so booting couldn't proce... Read more

Hey Everyone,

I need help finding a mobo that will fit into my Dell. I have a Dell Dimension 3000 with the standard mobo (E210882) installed. I want to be able to play the latest games (Example: Elder Scrolls Oblivion).

Specs are:

Windows XP Professional (Build 2600)
Pentium 4 3.0Ghz with 1Gig of RAM
Power supply - 250W (just bought a 600W)
I just installed ATI Radeon HD 2400 PCI graphics card (256MB)... I was desperate
Phoenix ROM BIOS plus Version 1.10 A02

I know my PSU is low so I bought a 600W PSU and will install that when I get it. As we all know this mobo I have only comes with PCI slots. The HD 2400 was the best I could find at the time.

I am looking for a mobo that carries PCI-E, PCI-E x16. And I know I will need a new graphics card also, but I think I can handle that one. I just need help finding the right motherboard.

Can anyone help me with this? If you need any more info let me know. Price range for mobo can be between $50 - 150.

Thanks in advance!

A:Finding Good Mobo for Dell Dimension 3000?

If you merely want a replacement, then the Dell Optiplex 170L or 170XL board will fit and work, and is cheaper because nobody knows about it.

With other boards, you have case problems, space problems, power supply problems...

There are not many boards that will fit the same spots with the same connectors.
But if you are willing to upgrade the power supply, the heatsink and fan, and change the memory, you are on your way.
One problem is that the CPU heatsink and fan will not transfer over easily... The Dell 3000 board heatsink frame is cheap plastic and will easily break if dimensions change.
Changing to a non-Dell board will mean that your Dell recovery disc set will not work, Windows will not install, and your current hard drive will be shut down by Windows XP when it detects the hardware change.

The bottom line is that unless you just upgrade the board, it is cheaper and better to get a computer case to go with it, and start over. A new case will be cheaper than upgrading the Dell Case.
