At my school we have a decent supply of laptops and when one of them breaks we are either told to wait briefly for it to be repaired or if it is more serious we are given a new one and our data is transferred over our server.
I recently was given the computer of a student who was expelled from my school and the ?TrueSuite? program is holding fast to his fingerprints and I can?t find any way to get rid of them.
I don't care about any stored passwords.
I just want to be able to clear it and add my own so I can use the features of that program.
Is there any way to fix this situation other than going to the kids house and getting his finger prints?
I doubt you can delete this fingerprint without to be locked in the Windows system.
You can either use the fingerprint or the password to log in to the system.
If you don?t have one of these possibilities then you will be not able to log in.
I entered bios with my password and did that "clear password", after i reboot system "enter current password" screen appared and not accepting any of my passwords (i tried old passwords, tried with different keyboards). Any help would be appreciated.More replies
So Dell made a really terrible decision. They have a transparent strip in the power button for an LED light to indicate if the power is on. A power indicator is a given in any laptop, no matter how cheap it is. However, Dell in all of it's genius decided to not include an LED bulb on laptops up to the Inspiron 7000 Series, despite leaving a transparent slot for it. Seriously, what happened to this brand?!? Do children make these laptops now?
I want to fix this, as my laptop is no longer returnable and a power indicator is absolutely necessary. So the only thing I can think of is replacing it with one from the 7000 Series somehow (with some help probably).
This is a Dell Inspiron 5559. I also have an Inspiron 5547. Not sure which exact 7000 model I should get the part for...
Are they compatible?
Is there an easier way? Like how Fn+H turns on the hard drive indicator?
The systems use different case and mainboard designs -- and may even be made by different companies. The answer in all likelihood is no.
I don't think Apple has produced a Macbook with a power indicator -- the PC vendors are playing follow Apple.

I just replaced my BIOS battery and now with all the settings erased, I'm trying to go into the BIOS and fix them, but it's asking me for a password and won't let me get in without it. What the heck? Isn't removing and replacing the battery supposed to get rid of all settings, including the BIOS password? I didn't have a password on my BIOS before I replaced the battery, and now I have no idea what this one is or how to get around it. And I can't take the battery out to make it forget, because taking the battery out was what started this mess to begin with. Anyone know how to get in?

I was just given a used Dell Optiplex 780 Mini Tower computer. It has Windows XP Pro.
The problem is that it just boots up to the Windows Log In window, prompting me for the password. The old Username is already displayed there. The computer was from a batch of computers that were replaced at where one of my sisters works. So, I asked my sister if she could find out what the password was. She got with the girl who used to use that computer and gave me the supposed password. I tried that password, but still no dice.
So, is there a way I can clear the Windows Log In password? Preferably I'd like to in the process more like reset the entire settings so that the computer now just simply boots up to the Desktop sans any Windows Log In password prompt like my current computer.
Have you tried safe mode?
I had a HP laptop Folio 1040 G1. Few years ago, I'd set the bios password on it. (I've still remember, and use the PW everyday) But now, I haven't need to protect it by bios password anymore.I tried clear it, but I found that - just only change it. Normanly, when to clear bios password (ex. on desktop) the PC checks current PW (I passed the stage). On the box to ask new password, put the ESC button. And then the PW has been removed. But on Folio 1040 G1, that way didn't work. Pleas tell I can remove it or not (and how to do). Thanks you all !More replies

I think I have the problem that NT is sending an encrypted password to my Unix machine. The network is peer to peer running TCPIP. My 95/98 PC's are fine. I found a patch to edit the register for Win98 to enable clear text but NT seems to be different. Any suggestions?
How are you accessing your Uinx box over the net? Via telnet? If so, then this does use clear text, and all the articles I have found are how to install services to not send Clear Text over the network.
Have you installed the NT services for UNIX?
If not, then you can read about it here: http://www.microsoft.com/TechNet/winnt/sfuwp.asp
Hope this helps

I purchased a used HP ProBook 6440b that had a password set for access the bios or cmos. I would like to clear or reset this password. I installed .NET Framework and then some of the HP ProtectTools and all that accomplished to change the password for the Owner/User access not the Admin password to setup and it seems to have set a password for starting up Windows 7 64 bit Professional even after a reinstall of the OS. There are no error messages - after attempting to enter 3 times, i think, a messages says to hit the power button.More replies

I'm having a bit of difficulty with something. I have two accounts on my computer, a Admin and a local user account under my name. I have forgotten the password that I put on the admin account and now I need to download Microsoft Office and it is not allowing me to do so because it requires that I have administrator privileges.
So I need to clear out the password, or make my standard user account an administrator account.
Can someone help me? Thanks!
Welcome to SF!
While password hacking techniques will not be discussed here, there are other things to try.
Reboot the computer into safe mode, and log into the built-in administrator account. Then change the password for your admin account.
I am currently trying to load a Linux operating system as a clean install on a Dell Optiplex GX520, but can't seem to manage it because I can't reconfigure the boot order to accommodate the external CD drive attached (it doesn't have one on board). We bought a couple of these units at a business liquidation to use with our kids, and while I've been able to set up one of them without a hitch, I can't access the other one because the BIOS is password protected - and I obviously don't have a hope in hell of finding out what it is.
I was directed to the following site -http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...g/advfeat0.htm - where a solution was suggested, but try as I might I cannot find the appropriate pin that clears the password - the diagram is a little on the obscure side. I can't see a pin of any kind ANYWHERE on the board in fact.
Can anyone familiar with the board tell me how to solve the problem?
Thanks in advance...............Tim

How do I create a password so you would need a password to clear private data in firefox?
Hi, welcome to TSF
The 'clear private data' feature is not password protected. You might be able to do it through the about:config settings or there might be an addon available, but I can't find anything.
Is your Firefox profile password-protected, and have you set a master password in Tools > Options > Security tab? If other people are using the computer, do they all have their own Firefox profiles?
You could install the Menu Editor addon which allows you to remove menu entries. This would remove 'Clear Private Data' from the Tools menu, but would not disable the keyboard shortcut, Ctrl-Shift-Del.
My name is Ryan I am the Admin at a company with a small (40 terminal) network. Currently the network is on a workgroup running windows XP Pro on all machines. We have a NAS (N4100+ Thecus) on the network with protected folders (the authetication is done by the NAS, as that is where the users and protected folders are created and managed). The NAS shows up as NT 4.9 Server and all the folders that aren't password protected are readily accessible. The first time I attempt to login to a protected folder (having not logged in to ANY protected folders at all on the network) the login works fine. But if I go to a different protected folder under a different user I am prompted for the login credentials (which i type in correctly) but it then tells me I do not have permission to view this folder. When I type in the first protected folder path it doesn't ask me for login credetials and just lets me in. I am wondering where in XP does it store the login and password info for internal network IP's login so I can delete any saved credentials.
(I posted this under networking but no one will respond *pictures everyone giving him funny looks* Maybe this is where i should have posted this?)

I just replaced the Motherboard today for a customer, it worked just great! I went into the bios and recalibrated the battery. Problem is that I think it burnt out the laptop because the laptop will not power on at all, just like before I replaced it.
What I ment was that I think calibration caused the burn-out of the board
Laptop motherboards can fail quickly. Was this a new or used board. I really doubt that a battery calibration would damage the motherboard. Have you tried starting the laptop with the battery out?

I would like to delete most of the icons from my desktop but have them available 1 or 2 clicks. I am trying to speed up start up. Any other ideas appreciated. long time computer user but novice at "customization" Thanx
Welcome to the Forums 2vbears45,
You could simply copy all icons to a map in your user folder, that'll give you a nice cleaned up desktop. But I don't think that it'll make your start-up all that much faster.
Anyhow, to delete the icons like the trash bin, you should right click anywhere on your desktop, and then select Personalize out of the drop down menu. In the window that pops up, you should click on Change desktop icons out of the little menu on the left. In the window that pops up you can select what icons you do and don't want to display on your desktop.
To, for example, remove the trash bin icon, simply uncheck the box before Recycle Bin, and click on Apply.
If you have removed the desired icons from your desktop, you can only put them back using this way.
If you want to have them a few clicks away but not on your desktop, simply create a shortcut before removing the icon.
If you really wish to make your computer start up faster, you might also want to check out the msconfig menu.
Before showing you how, I will warn you, do not mess with it if you don't know what you are doing!
Okay, first open your start menu. In the search bar type msconfig. Click on the program that appears in the menu. In the system configuration, click on the tab called Startup. Here you can select which programs you want Windows to start up when starting up the computer. By default all programs in the list are selected, and so they will all be started upon start... This is probably a stupid questions. I just installed XP x64 and I can't figure out how to get that convenient little icon onto my quick launch that automatically minimizes all the windows. I know the keyboard shortcut is win-D, but I'm accustomed to the icon. Anyone know?
Right click on the taskbar and select Toolbars and then make sure Quick Launch is clicked.

Eldinv, I had to do this and all I did was search for files with .rdp as the extentsion
and delete them.
Of course you have to make sure that hidden and system files are visible.
and in the search tell it to search for filename, *.rdp
This is my first post and I have to give a BIG THANKS as this forum has helped me countless times!
My problem started about one week ago when I installed a new 22" LCD Acer monitor. I upgraded the drivers from the Acer support site and since that time, my system shows no taskbar or icons AFTER i wake up the system. I am currently running the Power as "Always On" with a screensaver kicking in after 10 minutes but this isn't want I want to do on a regular basis.
I suspect that the driver recommended by Acer is for Vista only but I haven't been able to confirm that. Acer's support line has been busy for two days solid. I have tried to delete the drivers and monitors with no success as they just re-install on their own immediately. I've also tried to do a system restore but since I reformatted on 12/12/08, I have been unable to find a restore point that I can restore to.
Any suggestions from anyone? Thank you very much in advance...you guys are awesome!
I failed to mention that I'm running XP Pro SP3.
Any thoughts on what can remedy this situation?
I have been faced with a bit of a dilemna. One one hand, I love to use Windows Dreamscene. On the other hand, however, I hate what it does to the fonts on my desktop icons.
See the picture.
I'm curious as to how I get those set so they're not clear like that.
I've tried going into CP>Personalize>Widows Color and Appearance>Advanced to set it to a regular color, but it disabled the ability to choose a color.
And so, I am curious if there is a registry fix for this or not.
Or a fix of any sort, for that matter. Anything would really help a lot, thank you.

thanks for all help, who can stop fan.....
Just view questions:
What notebook model do you have exactly?
What system are you using?
What do you mean by LAN power exactly?
I can just tell you that the cooling modules are controlled by fan table stored in the BIOS.
Usually the cooling fan starts to rotate if the CPU would be loaded by some single applications/processes. It could be also possible that your fan rotates continuously with low performance in order to keep the temperature low. This isn?t a real notebook problem.

At our firehouse we have active directory running with about 200 users. Each user has their own login. At our second station we require each user to log in to a computer at station one via Remote Desktop Connection (the physical computer at station two is using a generic, locked down username).
This works fine, but when the user is prompted to enter their credentials, it always says the last user to log in, usually something to the effect of 192.168.0.33\username. Is there anyway to clear that field so the users do not need to erase the previous username each time?
Thanks in advance. -PJ
but it does involve editting the registry and you would have to make an automated script to run it so not very easy or convenient

My Computer is having a series of startup/power problems.
It started off that when I put the PC into standby when I wasn't using it, the blinking light, which signifies standby, would stay blinking even after I logged back onto Windows. I usually fixed that by turning everything off, unplugging, resting the transformer powerbar, and then plugging back in & turning it back on.
Then, early New Years Day, I noticed the computer was off and I didnt remember turning it off, and the blinking standby light was not on.
My settings were set so that it was several hours before my PC would shut itself completely off, and it hadnt been that long since I had used it.
I tried to turn it back on via power button, and I was able to log into my admin Windows user account, but the whole machine shut completely off right around the time when the desktop icons started loading.
I unplugged everything, cleaned a bit of dust out of the inside of the tower, reset the power bar, waited awhile, plugged it back in and started again, same thing several times.
I noticed that the back (smaller) fan was barely going and making no noise--It is usually somehwhat loud on this old computer.
At first I thought it was overheating, which it did about a year ago, but I didnt hear the little beeping that normally occurs when that happens.
I unplugged, reset power bar and turned it on again, and before the login screen loaded, I hit F2 (I think) to go into BIOS settings. I set a Supervisor pa... Read more

I have a Dell Inspiron I5 / 5000 series which would not start on pressing the power button. I called Dell while it was still under warranty (it is out of warranty now), and they advised to simply remove the battery, and reinsert it. The laptop started fine after this tweak. This is now turning out to be a botheration. Would someone advise on a permanent fix?

I recently bought a Radeon 9800 series (256MB), but I'm having some confusing issues with it. After plugging in the power lead to it on my 300W PSU, when you pressed the power button on the computer, the pc would burst into life for a fraction of a second, and then die. If you removed the power lead from the Radeon, it powered up fine with the familiar "you need to connect your power lead" sign.
I figured a 300W PSU was too weak, so went and bought myself a 500W, but exactly the same thing happens.
Finally, after testing a few PSUs I had around, a 350W seems to work it; however my frame rate is exceptionally slow and 3D Mark results are way below what they should be.
I would ideally like to get the 500W PSU working...does anyone have any pointers?
My Machine Configuration is as follows:-
P4 3.4GHz @ 800FSB with 1MB Cache
1GHz dual channel DDR-3200
160GB HDD space
Radeon 9800 Series w 256MB RAM
Any help would be very gratefully received. I have done a google trawl and a few people complain about power issues - but nothing quite like this.

@GlitchMasta47? At the password screen, hit enter 3 times and you should receive a halt code - enter this on the site below. https://bios-pw.org/ Regards, DP-K9 more replies

On my Desktop, whenever I go to Start > Power > Sleep , when I come back from Sleep the Start window is still open.
In Windows 7 we came back to a clean desktop. It does this on 3 PCs.
Is this behavior normal?
Is your start menu displayed full screen? If so, you could change that.0 more replies
I recently installed Stalker Clear Sky on to my machine and within minutes of playing it crashed to the desktop. After that crash I sought out patches to the game and applied the most recent patch, 1.5xx.10(or something to that effect). After applying the patch my game continued to crash especially when I went to save. I can only play for maybe 5 minutes at a time, and can not play past the first cut scene in the swamps. To be more specific I haven't even left the Clear Sky base.

I recently purchased a Lenovo Ideacentre 700 series desktop computer from Best Buy. Though the performance seems to be okay, I've found one 'feature' that is extremely frustrating...the motherboard has a proprietary PSU connector. The 725W aftermarket PSU I purchased can't be installed because the Lenovo motherboard has a 10+4 pin connector for the PSU whereas the aftermarket PSU has a 'standard' 20+4 pin connector. Since Lenovo advertises this as an "Easy to Upgrade Powerhouse", do they sell an adapter to use aftermarket PSUs?! If not, is anyone aware of an aftermarket solution that I can purchase? I would think that enough people have encountered this issue that someone would offer a plug-and-play adapter cable. I've already reviewed the following post on this forum, but it primarily desribes a solution that involves cutting wires and using a paperclip as a jumper. It also mentions a 24-to-10 pin ATX adapter cable at a site called Moddiy, but a later post says that this adapter unfortunately doesn't work.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-E-H-K-M-Q-Y-and-ErazerX/IdeaCentre-700-10-Pin-Atx-Connector/td-p... Is anyone aware of an adpater that will work? Thanks in advance.More replies
My laptop is only 7 months old. I am getting an error message that says"Alert! The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the port adapter." There is a Note that this can be disabled in the BIOS setup, which I went into and saw no such thing. Also, at the bottom you can Continue, Enter BIOS Setup or Diagnose. If I do Continue or BIOS Setup, it won't boot into Windows. If I run the Diagnose, it takes 6 hours and then will boot into Windows. I don't dare turn the computer off and have to run another 6 hour diagnostics, which comes up with nothing is wrong. My computer is much more sluggish and the mouse very sluggish since this happened. I've read other things about this on older computers, but this computer is virtually new. Any help would be much appreciated.
Call Dell - they'll send a new adapter first. If that doesn't solve the problem, they'll replace the DC jack or the mainboard -- all under warranty.1 more replies
Lately I have been having power issues. my laptop is always plugged in (power surge protecter used) i shut it off when not in use. but now even though it is using 100% AC adapter for power; the Li-ion battery is draining, and the laptop shuts off after about 15 min. i have tried to use the laptop with out the Li-ion battery and it shuts off after about 15 min. i have switched outlets and there is no change.
i do use a chill pad at all times. and i have checked all connections and everything is plugged in.
Inspect your battery, and power adapter very carefully for bent pins and contact strips. Assure best contact by bending them outward ever so slightly.
Then consider buying an official Gateway power adapter on eBay.
Power adapters fail frequently enough to distrust them. Batteries have never been as reliable as one would like.
Too much heat or too drastic a cold will ruin the power adapter or the battery. Do not leave any of them in a car during summer or winter temperatures.

Hi, I work at a pawn shop, and we have a problem we have never encountered before. This laptop, which is cleared and is now for sale in the shop, now asks for an administrator password or power on password. It did not do this when it was brought in, nor when it was pulled from the back. We were going to power it on for a customer, and it just started asking us for this password. I have seen in another post that you enter through it 3 times to get a code, so here is the code:61987774 Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
