I'm trying to do a repair on my Windows XP and when I try to get into C:/Windows - it's asking me for an administrators password - I have no idea what that is. I tried my log in password but it says it's invalid.
Help!!! Thank you.
Try leaving the password field blank, and just click on OK.
Hi, my dad recently bought me hp pavilion x2 but i can't use it because it requires i unlock the retail administrators password..please help me figure it out
Hi, If you're referring to a power on password, at the password screen, hit enter 3 times and you should receive a 'halt code' - post back with this code. If you're referring to a Windows log-on password, there is a general policy on the Forum not to provide methods of bypassing this , however a local computer shop would be able to do this for you. Another option would be to reset the notebook to its 'Factory Condition' and then set it up from the beginning ? if you don?t have Recovery Media, the notebook will have shipped with a Recovery Partition which can be accessed at boot - ie shutdown the notebook, then start tapping away at f11 as soon as you power on. A full guide on this can be found on the following link. http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04758961 Regards, DP-K1 more replies

Hi there, a couple days ago i let someone uses my computer and they said that it stopped responding while they were just surfing a website and then when they rebooted it it said something along the lines of (i cant remember exactly)
Invalid boot.ini file may be corrupt or missing and then somethin aboul a hal.dll file.
I tried running my XP disc and using the recovery console but i need the administrators password which i cant remember (i never needed to know it as i dont have a log on screen for XP) i need to know if theres someone i can replace this boot.ini file or reset the admin password without actually going into windows since it wont load.
P.S i did use the search but ive had to write this in about 2 minutes so im sorry i didnt get to have a proper look
When you get to the point where it asks for Administrator's password, if you didn't set one in the first place, simply press ENTER.
PS. Don't worry, your double post will be taken care of.
In order to play certain downloaded games I need more rights. I was told to sign on temporarily as the computer administrator but I don't know the password. How do I recover it?
well if ur running windows xp there is only 1 way to recover and reset that password, other than reinstalling windows. It's a program called winternals and once you create the boot cd and run it goto locksmith and that will allow you to overwrite your admin password to whateva u want. this works for windows 2000 as well.
i've recently formatted and re-installed Windows XP Pro SP2 on a RAID0 setup. nothing at all went wrong with the install and everything was working fine for about a week.
today however, i locked my desktop (WinKey + L) and went out. when i got back, i typed my password in to unlock the machine and was told that my password was incorrect, i tried the password a few more times (typed very carefully) but the computer kept giving the same error; 'incorrect password'.
to get around this i used 'administrator' and the admin password, which logged off 'mark' (which is my normal account with adminstrative rights) and took me back to the login screen. from here i logged into 'mark' with my normal password and got in first time.
i then tried to change the password of the acount 'mark' to something very simple like 'aaa' to see if it was human error on my part. so i opened Control Panel -> User Accounts and clicked change password. i typed the current password and entered a new password of 'aaa' and was presented with the same error as before; 'incorrect password'. i also tried Ctrl + Alt + Del and using the change password option but got the same error again (surprise surprise).
i've done a bit of searching (google and MS KB) but haven't found anything relevant or useful.
any help or advice would be massively appreciated!

Hi i dont know if anyone is going to be able to help or whether due to the nature of the query if you guys would be willing to help. Anyway here it goes...
Ok i have recently started a new job IT Technician/Administrator within a local school of mine. The problem that i have is that all of the admin passwords where held by the old Technician/Admin and i cant find or no one that works in the school knows what the pass could possibly be. We have managed to get onto the old server as the co-ordinator had an account on it, so we have managed to change the admin pass on the server, but there is a new server to be installed and i can not change the domain name in the network ID properties because i do not have the admin password for the clients.
The logons on the server do not corispond with the logins on the clients, because with it being a primary school the old Tech thought we would just have a local account on the machines.
The reason we do not know the passwords and we can not ask the old Tech for the password as back in april he suddenly passed away. anyway i was wondering if it is possible to get around this? is there any software i can get that might be able to show me the admin pass or to delete it so i can this new server online that they are so eagerly awaiting for Or is the only Solution a fresh install of the OS?
Anyway i hope there is someone that may be able to help me with this matter.
The only legal way to do this is to re-install the OS. You do not need to be the local admin to join a computer or change the domain the computer is on. You just need to be an admin for the domain.
Is there a reason why the users log into the local machine? It kinda makes it pointless to have a domain.
ok so this is my post so go easy on me. my dad just gave me his old dell latitude c800 laptop. problem is though that he forgot the password and now it needs administrators rights to boot. i was hoping to use this laptop for school and after searching the net believe this thing is nearly useless. since his company merged and he doesnt know the password it is going to be nearly impossible to get one. my question for you is would it be worth it to buy a new harddrive and motherboard or just consider it a waist of time. i doubt anyone can help to get past this "grey" screen but if i could fix it relatively cheaply i might consider doing so. also it has windows 2000 on it and we dont have the disks but if i put a new hard drive and motherboard i would need to have some OS cds correct? anyways any info would help out.
well do u have any OS Cds? The "problem" you're having wont require anything quite as drastic as pulling out the major components of your laptop. If nothing else, just a reformat on the hard drive and reinstall the OS.
Trying to reset the password on and old C400, it is asking for primary or administrator password. I have no idea what to put in there, and can't see if the computer will function at all! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!More replies

How remove password BIOS(Admin password & canfigure setup),
Turn off computer. Find the battery on the motherboard. Take it out for a couple minutes. Put it back in and restart computer. This should reset cmos and solve your problem.
I hope I can get some help / guidance from some one with more experience with the M400 if possible?!
I reinstalled the OS and setup the biometric security for me, which has worked flawlessly! However I stupidly also set up the boot up security (BIOS Password). So when the tablet gets turned on I can scan my finger and get in without any issues, however I now want to turn the boot up security off. So I booted it in to the OS and went to disable it....however it asks for my password....which I have forgot as I have been a typical end user and have been only using my bloody finger!
Does anyone know if I can disable the BIOS security while in the OS using the biomentric security rather than entering a password? I have tried just changing the admin password within the win OS but that doesn't work....any ideas?
Any help with be greatly appreciated!
> So I booted it in to the OS and went to disable it....however it asks for my password....which I have forgot as I have been a typical end user and have been only using my bloody finger!
You are speaking about BIOS password which you set up in the BIOS?
As far as I know you cannot remove the BIOS password if you don?t know the old BIOS password.
In such case just the Toshiba ASP could help you? just the Toshiba ASP technician could remove the unknown BIOS password
I'm having a problem with a Toshiba Satellite L300D. After I reinstalled the HDD it would beep. To solve this I went into BIOS to look and see if the board had some sort of intrusion setting. When I exited the BIOS and restarted I know get the Enter Current Password (with a blue background on a black screen) with continuos beeps. The thing is it seems to auto enter in 10 characters (*) and then stop. There are no other options.
I have searched unsuccessfully for any info about this and I cant even find where the CMOS is located which I think is soldered onto the board.
Has anybody had any similar experience like this?
I would really appreciate any help its driving me crazy.

Dear Customer, Welcome to HP Support Forum and we are glad to assist you. This is to inform you that all HP Business Notebooks such as Probooks or Elitebooks have more stringent security than consumer models infact they don't produce 'halt codes', the password cannot be derived from the Serial Number and thecode is stored in non-volatile memory so removing the RTC cell will not reset the password in this case. I was given a computer to work on and it turns out that her now ex-husband locked it, both the hard drive and the Bios. It is a Dell laptop. She was concerned about what was on the hard drive but I am almost 100% sure there's no way to unlock it???
As for the Bios, my desktop can be bypassed by either taking out the battery or resetting the CMOS jumper. On her laptop I took the battery out but it was still locked. She was hoping I could buy a different hard drive and the computer still be usable.
Sorry no suggestions here, please re-read the rules http://www.techguy.org/rules.html

I have a Dell Latitude D630. It has an admin password for the bios. Nothing is locked except for the settings. I can't change any of the settings in the bios. It lets me boot to windows just fine though. My question is, since I don't know that admin password for the bios, if I upgrade the bios firmware, will the admin password be deleted? Since I'm flashing the bios, I would think that all the settings will be lost. Is that the case?

I updated the bios after I had notified from Toshiba about the Bios v3.50. The process was done by the Toshiba Utility software, and after the reboot there is "Password =" on a blank screen and it not recognise my BIOS password, writing "Not certified".
I have also tried the HDD password but no luck.
What can I do now?
Before trying to update the BIOS, all passwords should be removed!
BIOS password can be removed by authorized service provider available in your country.
But the unknown HDD password cannot be removed anymore.
In such case the HDD isn?t accessible and cannot be used.
Sorry mate but in my opinion you have only one chance to get the BIOS password removed; you need the ASP assistance.

Because it is not that easy or possible the way you would do this on deskopt PCs.
This is why you have to take your machine to ASP. The guys there can remove the password.
Logging into my computer all i had to do after start up was put in my windows password. Now out of the blue its asking for my bios password.Does anyone know the reason why this would happen all of a sudden? Thanks for the help
System manufacturer and model?
A failing CMOS battery might result in such...you can try replacing the current one.
I have a dual boot set up and frankly im tired of constantly putting in the password for Windows so I took it off and set-up the BIOS password which when you turn on the machine sort of forces you to immediate type in the password.
1. Is the BIOS Password Gateway secure in your view?
2. Can a hacker for DOS / botnet still circumvent this?
3. In case of theft, (touch wood) is the BIOS effective or would you suggest true crypt?
a BIOS password can?t protect you when you are using your computer, it only protects when you start it.
some basic security:
use 2 accounts with good passwords, an ADMIN & a USER-account, both with good passwords.
for normal work always use the USER-account.
only use your ADMIN-account when it?s absolutely neccesary, fx. when doing lot of system manintenance etc.
use UserAccountControl (UAC), set it to max. (up)
a BIOS password is not good enough if you want to protect your data, you have to use encryption.
I have a system and Windows password.
I understand the sytem password can easily be over ridden via BIOS . Is this true?
If so , can i set up a password to enter BIOS?
ok now that i understand the intent of your post (sorry about that),
and no to my knowledge you cannot over ride your windows password with bios and yes you can add a password to bios, what are your system specs so that i can assist you in doing this.
Again i am sorry for the confusion.

Alright, so my friend's dad's friend (sounds like the start of a great urban legend) just got this old laptop from one of his friends. It's a Toshiba, pretty nice too, and it was refurbished by somebody after a baby vomited on it.
Anyway, here's the problem - it's password protected, and no one knows the password. Now, it looks to me like this is a BIOS password, (which I admittedly have absolutely zero experience with) because I can't even get to the Windows start-up screen. All i get when I turn on the computer is a black screen with a blue box which says "enter current password." I've tried some default passwords (0000, root, admin, 9999, 1234) but none of those worked.
So I'm not sure of my options. I think could take the laptop apart and remove the BIOS battery from the motherboard, which I think would reset the password. But I'd really rather not take this thing apart, it's not mine and i don't really know how to put it back together. I mean, laptops are a alittle more difficult to assemble than desktops.
Any other ideas? Advice?

What to do if you forget your Windows password
[just my opinion, a moderator may see it differently]
A friend of mine has a computer that he got from another person. It currently has no videocard. Not sure on what kind of board it is but it does have an agp slot.I wanted to find out what kind of agp slot it was 4x 8x etc so i went into the bios. The bios seems to be password protected.Anyway i would be able to get in the bios without the password? And if i cannot get into the bios is there any other way of finding out what agp slot it has.The friend currently has no internet service.
All i know is the agp slot is much smaller then my agp slot for a 4/8x card
There are usually two ways of resetting the BIOS passwords. One method is to remove the CMOS battery and wait about 5 to 10 minutes, then reinstall it. That will clear it. The other way is to locate the jumper for clearing the CMOS on the motherboard, usually has 3 pins available, and you would move the jumper to opposite setting as it is now. They are sometimes labeled CMOS or CMOS reset or CMOS clear.
Beware that on some of the really old motherboards, there are jumpers for setting the CMOS for programming mode also.
If you can provide any details on the motherboard, I could look up the board information provided it is available.
To be safe on the video card, I would simply install an AGP 1x/2x card. If it is a 2x/4x slot, it will still run. I don't think you will be able to tell what the slot is by looking in the BIOS.
Another way of finding out is to run a check on the chipsets that are on the board also.
Hope that helped a little..

My dad's computer magically went into BIOS mode and wants a password to get back into the computer. When it happened, the monitor said "entering power saving mode", it went black, the monitor's amber light came on but the computer was still on so we restarted it (pressed off/on button) and bam, "enter password". Don't know the password, this has never happened.
Pictures are in my photo album
Things we have tried:
inserting the boot/install OS disc
CTRL ALT DELETE, ESC, F#'s upon start up before the computer goes to password protected BIOS
We have not tried taking out the battery, I heard this could be melted on or whatever its called but also will erase everything on the computer? (Not too big of a deal)

Hello, I have a Compaq Presario CQ40-330TU Laptop running Windows 10 (32-bit) operating system. I seem to have forgotten my laptop's BIOS password. I entered the BIOS password three times, each time I entered the password, it stated as "Incorrect PASSWORD". By the time I typed the password third time, it showed the key number as 56573544. Could you please assist me in resetting my Laptop's BIOS password? Any help in this regard will be much appreciated.

I searched the web for help and I heard people say Toshiba has a bug - there laptops got passwords set on them. (Don't
I tried everything I could to reset it but nothing helped.
Is there a way to know/reset my BIOS password
Please correct me if I posted this in the wrong place.

I have been asked by a client to try and retrieve a BIOS password. I have tried PHOENIX, phoenix, CMOS and BIOS but nothing works. It is Phoenix BIOS on an Acer Aspire 1500.
When I start Windows in Safe Mode, it lists all the system32 drivers and files it needs, but then just loops back. Sometimes it even starts to load Windows and then loops back in the middle of it.
Of course, no CMOS password recovery program will work, as I can't boot from the CD, even with one in there!

HI i bought elitebook 8770w workstation laptop the webcam and the fingerprint dosnt work .. then i realized they are looked from bios but i dont know what is the password of the laptop .. please can you help me
Hi, Unfortunately, business machines such as Probooks or Elitebooks have more stringent security than consumer models - they don't produce 'halt codes', the password cannot be derived from the Serial No. and the code is stored in non-volatile memory so removing the RTC cell will not reset the password in this case. If you Contact HP Business support they should be able to send you a customised SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password. Regards, DP-K1 more replies

A friend of mine found an old Toshiba Satellite L505D-GS6000 laptop in a warehouse. He turned it on and found there was a bios password that looked like this. I've been working on cracking this thing for a few hours now, and no help. I've even taken the laptop completely apart and took out the cmos battery, still no help.
Does anyone know how to recover (or remove) a Bios password? Preferably with software. I've read a lot of stuff about "shorting out JP1 for 15 seconds" and "short CMOS CLR1 for 15 seconds" on this site and i'm just not that computer savvy. I don't understand what that means, plus, my laptop doesn't fit under any of those categories listed.
Any help please?

ok i have a bois problem, but before you tell me to reset the bios, this is a different problem. I have a complete workinjg ibm thinkpad 600e (i know it old) and was recentily upgraging my hard drive. when i installed the drive and tried to boot to a cd it asked for a password. but if i install the original hard drive and boot to the same disk it works with no password. i have reset the bios and if i go into bios it says there is no password. i need some help here. i can get more info if you need it.
type # 2645-4au
Go to the IBM/Lenovo site and download the latest BIOS, and all the drivers
for the 2645-4AU.
Now, following IBM instructions exactly, update the BIOS. Turn off machine. Cold Boot.
Then reformat and reinstall windows using this machine and your Thinkpad disc, after which you install all those drivers
