I recently clicked on the fn and f5 key together on accident and it messed with my screen and now my background is no longer full screen but small and centralised and everything has become smaller. I have tried adjusting my display, restarting multiple times and repressing the fn+f5 key but nothing seems to be working. Please help.

I recently got SP2 for XP Pro, and it screwed up my comp horribly. After installing XP Pro (from XP Home) all settings and everything were destroyed. However, when placing some icons back on the desktop, they became jumbled. I stopped putting things on the start menu and desktop until I can get this fixed. Thanks. (I had a few other errors as well. IE and OE were missing, and 2 DLLs were gone. Those I have fixed though.)

A:[resolved] My icons are all messed up (not disorganized, the image is messed up)

Try downloading TweakUI from here on the Microsoft Website. There is a function inside it which will repair your icons. See if this helps.

Just now I came back to my computer after being afk for about an hour and found that my W key was being pressed as if it was held down. I couldn't type in any search bar or chat because it would just repeat "wwww..." and the only way I could fix it was to power down my computer and restart it.
This is the first time that this has happened to me and I'm wondering if I should be concerned?
I am using Windows 7

I've performed a factory restore on it so now im back to 8.1 from 10 and is still not fixed and now I can't log into windows at all if I plug another keyboard into it the keys are functinal on it,but doesn't change anything. The pointer and touchpad seem to be working properly and none of the keys on the laptops keyboard are working but when I click the EOA icon to activate the OSK it only flashes momentarily so I'm not able to click it! I've tried resetting the battery and still not working. I've called tech support and they said since I've done the reset to factory condition theres nothing else that can be done and to mail it to them. Hi there,
I'm in the process of creating a fairly simple number game in VB .NET, using a simple form with labels etc., to act as a prototype for the full thing.
As control arrays are no longer supported, and I wanted something to that effect, after having put 10 labels on the form I used:

Public Cells As New System.Collections.Generic.List(Of Label)
'And then, later on, populated Cells with:
Now, I would like to create a function that will be called whenever any of the labels is pressed and will then wait for a keypress indicating a value, to be entered into the pressed cell, or a click on another label.
However, I am a little stuck as for how to do this, so any help would be much appreciated.

Hello! today a friend of mine sent me a messege in facebook telling me that someone stole my facebook profil and he also included a zip so pressed on the zip saved it to my computer opened it but nothing happened it showed me a black box with some letters for a split of a second and then it dissappeared, as if it couldn't open.  So I asked my friend what that was and he said that he diddn't sent it that it was sent automatically to me and that it was a virus and not to open it. But I did so I tried to erase it and I did erase the folders inside the zip but I couldn't erase the zip itself because it said that it was open in a programm but the only programm I had open was 'my files' then I closed the PC and reopened it and erased it succesfully but I want to know.. did I get infected? How can I know that? And if I did how can I get rid of the virus?Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

A:how can i know if i have a virus after i pressed on a zip someone sent me?

I would run a full virus scan with your antivirus and with malwarebytes or an equivelent malware scanner. Then I'd change my Facebook password. Never assume any zip file is from the person who supposedly sent it. 90% are viruses. Also warn your friends that  you've been hacked and not to accept any files form you. or  any friend requests the hacker might send.

Welcome to TSF.

That's not good. That's the main reason we tell users not to use this program on their own since it can cause damage. Do you have an older log of what you had before you did the fixes? If not, tell us what you fixed if you can remember.

Post your new log you have now and we'll take a look at it. What firewall program are you using?

Hi all,

I'm not pc savvy at all so this message comes with a tad bit of panic!

My mother accidently hit "log off" instead of restart using windows XP. Now she gets a blue screen that says "Welcome" on the left and my family's name with a chess board icon on the right. There's a button on the bottom that says "turn off family computer". We cannot get to the desk top no matter what we try. We can only shut it down. We think she hit log off-- since it's a family computer we never use this function. Can anyone tell me how to get back to the desktop? (she's quite upset because we're not sure what happened exactly, and not sure what to do)

ANY help or suggests are welcome! Thanks much!

General Info

Windows 8 pro
Cant do anything on computer
using a different laptop right now

I was in regedit trying to delete an instant savings app that had found its way into my computer. I believe i was in Local_Users and i know i went to the software folder. I accidentally deleted the software folder and I couldnt use any programs. I couldnt use a system restore because it gave me an error so i decided to reboot and go into safe mode and do it there but it didnt work. I have been trying to figure all of this out with windows technicians and didnt get anywhere. I cant do anything on my broken computer because when i boot it up, it skips the boot menu and i cant get it into safe mode or anything. it goes straight to the lock screen and I cant read any texts and can only put in my password. After I put in the password, it gives me a black screen for a few seconds with a blue spinning wheel on my mouse and it goes back to the lock screen. My idea was to load the cd I have with the win8 pro back onto my computer and that would reset the registry but I dont know how to do this because I cant do any functions on my pc at the moment. any help would be great. Sorry for all the bad writing, I am trying to finish a lot of homework and figure out this problem at the same time.

Today, when I tried to get photos onto my comp by inserting the memory chip into the SD/mini/MMC/RS and the computer wouldn't reconize it. I went to my computer and checked to see if the icons, and none were there.

I tried restarting my comp, but that didn't help.

How do I retrieve the hardware?

Remove the SD/mini/MMC/RS docking bay and the reinsert it into your PC, this is assuming that the device you inserted the memory chip into is connected through USB.

Hi everyone.

I am having a very similar issue as OP, but I "accidentally" [STUPID ME.....] did diskpart/clean (only clean) on a remote HD (149Ghz size with no partition on it).

I am still reading through this thread and hopefully I will be able to recover my data on this remote HD. I have been using TestDisk, EaseUS partition recovery to scan (only quick scan so far) w/o any luck yet. At this moment I am running Partition Recovery quick scan now. Since I do not have any partition on this HD, I am not sure if I am doing the right thing.... I only store pictures (tons of them) and some docs on it. I am on Page 9 of this thread, I will keep reading and trying.

Thanks in advance for helping me,

For the record: I am Win98 and ME certified and knowledgeable with DOS.
I am a 'shift-del' freak and was cleaning my desktop, 3 weeks ago and accidentally included my coin logs(I've been working on these for 3.5 years). Being an XP user and knowing XP doesn't use DOS, I thought there was no chance of getting them back; I just found out I was wrong and with the proper tools I can. I never did this before, but so need to. Please help.

Windows says, "word cannot find compressor for..." I'm clueless here. Plus after choosing to unhide all files and folders, I ran into 2 files that have the names I lost; but they begin with "~$", only have 1K and the icon is light colored. What is this? When I was reformatting my computer i deleted a part of my drive that i think was really important. It was drive E:. After the reformatting I tried to go on the internet. I tried to go on wireless but, I didn't have a wireless internet icon for my wireless card so I plugged it in. Still i could not go on the Internet. Then I tried to open some programs and half of them would load the others I would get error reports from.
I think the reason it doesn't work is because of the drive I accidently deleted. Is there any way that I could get the data back without taking it to a repair shop? Thanks for any help. Oh and I cant put my laptop on standby either.

I am currently traveling for work and I am using my personal, HP laptop to connect back to my office, via Cisco VPN. When connected to the tunnel, I am able to launch MSTSC to access my machine back at the office without issue on that end.

The problem I have noticed is that, when switching back and forth between my remote desktop session and my local desktop, the operating system seems to think that the Windows key is pressed on my local keyboard. So, when typing any hotkeys that would be active, such as "u," "e," or either of the "up" or "down" keys, Windows responds by launching Explorer, Ease of Access, minimizing/maximizing the active window and so on.

I have done several searches on the web and found that I am not alone in this issue, but I have yet to find any type of resolution. I am unaware as to whether or not Microsoft knows that this issue exists.

The operating system on my laptop is Windows 7 Pro and the OS on the machine I am connected to through remote desktop is Windows 7 Enterprise. According to some of the links I've found on the web, this has also occurred when the local OS is XP and the remote OS is 7.

My system specs are in my profile. Any information or helpful tips are greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

A:RDP Makes 7 Pro Think Windows Key is Pressed

No reply to this old thread, but following is offered for others who land here looking for a workaround (aka MS solution)...

This happens to me when the RDP session is focused and I lock the local workstation with "win + l" (lower-case L)...

Upon logging back onto the local workstation, keys would behave as if the windows key was pressed as well.

Microsoft solution is to use one of the following:
1. Use "ctrl+alt+del" and select "lock this computer".
2. Use the start menu and select "lock"
3. Ensure focus is other than the RDP session, then use "win+l".

I feel the above are workarounds, but I have been using number 3.

Hope this helps, especially for anyone else that has landed on this thread.

Hello, everyone!I've got a problem with Microsoft Wired Keyboard 200. When I press and hold a key for more than few seconds and I release it (like playing computer games), the key physically isn't pressed anymore but system doesn't follow my will. I'm forced to press that key once or twice, then I can hear a sound coming from Windows and the key is truly released until next time.It happens under Windows 8.1 but this keyboard used to work perfectly. I've been using it for two or three years. I don't remember if I spilled something on my keyboard lately. I can find neither a driver dedicated to this keyboard nor does Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center detect this device. My keyboard may appear old, I don't mind replacing it if this can solve my issue.Yours faithfully,SlawekPL

Hi all,

I work in a school environment and have come across an intermittent, non-user specific and non-machine specific issue.

Sometimes when people log on and start typing it will open up a piece of software, and always the same one and the same 'A' key on the keyboard.

It is not a huge problem, you can minimise the program and it wont keep opening up, or you can log off and back on again to cure the problem.

I am just curious if anyone has seen this before, or maybe has an idea how we can prevent this. I have search many forums for similar problems people have experienced, but never found anything helpful.

Many thanks,

Hello everyone!
I'm having trouble with my laptop's keyboard, specifically with letter x.

I press it once and nothing happens.. but if I immediatly press it again, it writes the letter.

What happens?
This works almost like when you open a folder on the pc. You need to click two times quickly to open it.

I tried running the Safe mode and writing and it worked perfectly!

At first I thought it was just dirt or a piece of something that was trapped under the x key but I removed it and nothing..

Please help me.

A:Keyboard writes key once when it was pressed twice

It sounds like there is some program or service running in normal mode that is keying off the 'x' key to see what follows. I've never heard of something like this and have no guesses on what it may be.

Did it work OK at one time? If so, did you install some utility or toolbar around the time the problem started? Can you try a System Restore point just before the problem started?

A:deleted userinit.exe by accident

There is a backup copy in C:\Windows\System32\dllcache

most of the time it is compressed in this folder.

Here is a copy of it from my XP installation (uncompressed)
See attached
You will need a XP install CD and use recovery environment to copy the file to the proper place, or use an Ubuntu boot CD to do it.

Here is an article on using a Ubuntu CD to copy data off an unbootable windows PC, one could also use it to copy a file to a Windows folder.

I went and inadvertantly disabled both monitors on my Ti4600 vid card. I just wanted to disable one as I thought having two caused problems using my mouse with the game Manhunt(retail copy). Mouse buttons worked but movement didn't.I tried three mice-optical,usb,ps/2 etc.I noticed the mouse cursor spanned both monitors during gameplay.
I installed on a slower machine (single monitor) and the mouse function as it should(ver slow computer though).
BACK TO ORIGINAL PROBLEM-I disabled one monitor, but picked the wrong one, went to disable the second and now I can't get any view of my desktop in order to re-enable them. Switched plugs, switched monitors et al.

I was curious as Malwarebytes, MSE, and even ESET didn't find anything like this, while SUPERAntiSpyware found adware but not these, though I'm not too sure: but I brought up start task manager and looked under processes and found two that weren't under my user name (just so you know, under "users" it's just me), and after looking them up on google, learned that they might be trojans. They are: csrss.exe, and winlogon.exe. Well, that last one isn't really a trojan, but wasn't under my user name so I brought it up here just in case.

I don't want to get in trouble, as I need to do some accounting-related stuff soon n my comp., so I need to know if they are trojans or not, and if they are, how to get rid of them right away. Any ideas, and could there be more? (Again, Malwarebytes, MSE, SUPERAnti and ESET didn't pick this up)

By Accident I Unplugged My Computer while it was on and now i am worried that my movie files will be corrupted...they seem to play fine...but i am still worried....please could somebody please help by telling me if any of my files will become damaged...thank you

A:By Accident I Unplugged My Computer While It Was On

Unless the files were open and being played or saved at the time of the power loss, there should be no damage.

But remember that power can do out at any time and hard disks die without warning (quite often, these days), so all your important data must be backed up. Since you are so worried it would suggest you have no backup plan. Maybe time to get one?

As an example I backup all new data every day, to a second and totally separate hard drive, then all data to DVD every week. Every DVD is "verified" to ensure that no files are corrupt in the copy process.

I have a 2TB external hard drive and a 1TB external hard drive.
I got a new 2TB internal hard drive and was installing Windows on it.
On the screen where it showed the connected drives, I stupidly forgot the 2 external drives were still connected. I thought somehow it was breaking up the new 2TB internal drive into 3 separate partitions. I clicked on the two external drives and deleted the partitions because I thought it would merge them. I DID NOT format luckily.
I am in the middle of running the Analyzer using TestDisk on the 2TB external. Since it is a 2TB hard drive, it is analyzing about 10% of the disk per day. So I guess it will take 10 days to finish. Small price to pay if I can recover all the data on these drives. One has all our home movies and photos and the other has all our scanned documents in PDF format. Sigh.
I am wondering if I am doing this the right way with TestDisk? Is there a faster way? When I deleted the partitions, the process took less than a second. The drives were partitioned to used 100% of the drive space. I read the page TestDisk Step By Step but still not sure if there isn't an easier way for my particular blunder. Nothing should be corrupted. Just deleted.
Thank you!

A:Deleted Partitions By Accident Please Help

Yes it should be faster. I thought there were two levels to the restore deleted partitions and only the deeper level involves scanning the surface for old deleted partitions.

I was going to check if my external HDD needed to be defragged. I was in the wee window that asks about checking the disk for errors and decided to do that, there's always two options, one is always automatically ticked and there's another one that said something about find and attempt to restore corrupt files, that is never ticked and I never choose it, until today. All I noticed was it found 1024 files, and I clicked proceed, it processed or fixed etc and i went back to the pc after an hour and decided just to cancel as it seemed to be stuck at 2025 files checked.
Once i clicked cancel I couldn't get access to my external HDD and when I right on 'My Computer' it says it's NTFS files and is full but windows can't get access to it, i thought i'd try restoring it and i can see that out of the 1TB I have used 330GB which is what my disk was like before my mistake.
as with most people I have all my most important stuff saved there away from my C drive.
Ok, sorry for waffling on, can anyone tell me if I am able to restore my drive back to what it was (Would that have been FAT32 files?)

Hello, I recently purchased Dell XPS 8700 that came with a 2tb harddive formatted with GPT. The computer came with Windows 8, and I wanted to downgrade to Windows 7. However the windows installer wouldn't install on any of the current partitions, so I deleted every partition with gParted and proceeded to install Windows 7 successfully onto the one giant partition. Since I deleted all the GPT partition information (Idiotically), I am unable to make more partitions and dual boot.

So my questions are: Is my harddrive as of right now in MBR or GPT? And how would I add the GPT partitions back, as in the primary and secondary GPT headers?

Edit: I am attempting to dual boot with Xubuntu 14.04 and Windows 7 Professional, both 64bit and the computer has the UEFI, I think. Am I better off using MBR or GPT to dual boot? I only want two OS's and a shared data partition.

A:Deleted all the GPT Partitions by accident

Since I deleted all the GPT partition information (Idiotically), I am unable to make more partitions and dual boot.

Deleting all GPT partitions is a recommended step to downgrade "Windows 8" as "Windows 7" is known to not much liking GPT based UEFI boot mode. Although "Win 7" 64 bit edition may boot from a GPT disk, i prefer MBR partitioning especially in case of dual booting with Linux. The only mistake you made here is not to partition the disk at the time of install. Fortunately you can split the single large "C" partition to two or three small partitions with the help of "Partition Wizard" free edition.
Download link : Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.
What you need to do is first shrink/resize "C" and create one or more new partitions using the free space.

Personally, I'd find it much easier to figure out what's going on here if I could see what Disk Manager says. You don't seem to have a very good grasp on disk terminology, so if you could take a screenshot of a fully expanded Disk Manager, (right click My Computer, select manage, on the right side of the screen choose disk management) then I can get back to you with much more specific advice.

Edit: To take a Screen shot, press print screen on your keyboard, and then paste into an image program such as paint. Save the resulting file, and then upload it to a site such as photobucket which will host the image for you for free. (You have to sign up for a free account first.) After uploading to an image hosting site, the site will provide you with several links that you can use to post the image here on this forum.

While I accomplished so much successfully setting up my computer in AHCI earlier, I now blew it all.

I had the SMART command failure error with my SSD, and received a new BIOS from my motherboard manufacturer. I applied it and "Loaded Optimized Defaults" in the BIOS as your supposed to. Stupid me, that means the motherboard activates IDE mode, but I installed Windows in AHCI mode.

So... I switched it back to AHCI after booting into IDE by accident and now I'm getting MBR Error. Is there any way to repair this? I have been trying to repair it through the Windows Install disk, using bootsec & command prompt to no avail.

Likely because where the screen pops up that says: "Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows. Select an operating system to repair" There's no option to select. So I elected to "Load Drivers" using iaAHCI.inf [Intel ICH10R] from the Intel RST installer (I extracted it on my Laptop). It still doesn't recognize it.
-->This is all pertaining to image 3. on the guide on the link HERE

If I HAVE to install Windows again, I have 2 storage drives installed as well, do I take them out to prevent them from being formatted? They are holding My Documents/My Pictures/My Music/My Videos etc.

Just bought a new Lenovo G770 5 days ago. Running Win7 64bit. The system repeatedly thinks the CTRL key is being pressed when it isn't. In the middle of typing a sentence, suddenly every letter I type performs the associated ctrl key action. The only remedy is a complete reboot (and loss of data in the process). I have googled this problem and it seems pretty common, but all I've found are a lot of suggestions (some of them too technical) and no clear solutions. Some of the non-useful suggestions I've gotten already:

"Wedge the CTRL key up" ~ it is not physically stuck; I have not even touched the key when this happens. If the key were simply physically stuck, a reboot would not solve the problem.

"Clean your keyboard" ~ the keyboard is not dirty; it's 5 days old.

Recently we have had a strange issue. We are ruining windows 7 and on few systems it automatically presses the Ctrl key. It is not possessed through keyboard (physical as well as virtual keyboard).. It happens in itself.

Windows is updated with latest updates.

Same goes for the keyboard drivers.

A:Ctrl key is pressed automatically randomly itself

OK, I've got to ask....

Are you saying that you can see the CTRL key being pressed by a spirit or poltergeist, or that a function that is usually controlled by pressing the CTRL key is happening without pressing the CTRL key?

If it's the first thing then call your local news organization.

If it's the second thing, please describe exactly what is happening that leads you to this observation. What you've given us so far is not much to go on.

I assume you have checked the physical keyboard for a stuck key?

Hi, my Packard bell laptop has started displaying sequences for some of the keys when pushed e.g. When I push q, 3, t or u the sequence q3tu appears always in that order, it doesn't matter if I push the q first it always appears as this sequence. Some of the other letter are fine however x,r,n,h does the same. I don't know what I've done or how to undo this and am not very good with computers at the best of times. I'm hoping there's a solution as I'm off to uni soon and can't afford a new laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Keyboard is displaying certain sequences when pressed? Help please.

Earlier today I couldn't press the shift key without my computer beeping.

I pressed it several times and was given the option to switch off 'sticky keys', after which the beeping problem ended.

This is suspicious because I never switched on sticky keys. Is there a form of malware that causes Sticky Keys to come on?

I've tried formatting the total hdd and installin windows in case its about a virus. but it won't go and virus cant be found.i'm on win7. the option to disable the built-in keyboard is grayed out and uninstalling the driver would auto reinstall it on the nex boot. so is there any way to disable the keypad or anythin else am i missing somewhere...

A:Laptop Keyboard auto-pressed!

are you sure the keyboard isnt physically damaged and has keys pressed through some kind of liquid spill or hard knock, (hell maybe just wear and tear). Have you tried removing the keyboard from ur laptop, and plugging in an external keyboard?

My computer has started going insane and seems to have f11 being pressed constantly, which toggles the fullscreen on and off repeatedly and endlessly- effectively making my computer unusable .
I have to press escape to stop the filckering ( toggling between normal and full screen mode continuosly) It stops temporarily and then starts again.

A lot of people have similar problem but there is no solution given on any forum.
On this forum too there were a couple of such posts with no replies.

when typing sometimes when i press a key it wont type. ive plugged in 2 different keyboards and the same thing still happens. at first i thought it was just terrible user error, but ive watchd myself type the keys and noticed that my key press wasnt registering. i noticed that it helps a lil to type slowly. (again its not just user error lol). i only have these typos when typing online.

i updated Acrobat reader, Java, and upgraded to ie9 platform. im still having a lil trouble with it, although it does seem to have improved a bit. i checked for updated drivers and i couldnt find anything.

need help troubleshooting this

A:Random keys not typing when pressed

Sometimes, a thorough cleaning of socket and boards with a can of Dust Off or other treated canned air can resolve the problem...
Try a very simple keyboard from any source that you know is working well... Keep a record of the keys that work improperly.

There is a problem with a friend's laptop keyboard. It is said that he had to press on the keyboard key hard for it to register to the computer. Upon removing the key cap, pressing on the gasket and also exhibits the same problem as well. In comparison, a key without the problem require very little force on the gasket for the key to register.

Is the problem with the gasket itself or underneath?

A:Keyboard key needs to be pressed hard to work

I have a vertical red line on my display.  It does not appear on the external monitor.  Sometimes it is two pixels wide, sometimes one.  When I press on it with some force (not just a light touch) it sometimes changes thickness or disappears, but returns with either one or two pixel thickness when I release pressure. I hae a Lenovo x201 Tablet (0831CTO) Multi-Touch display wih a 6QET68WW (1.38) BIOS. TIA

Go to Solution.

A:Red Vertical Line Disappears When Pressed Then Re-...

The problem is something called a column driver. There is a connection to every column of pixels on your screen. If you have a wxga screen, there are 1280 of them. The connection is made by a strip of tape with contacts, that is held against the back of the panel by the adhesive between the contacts. Sometimes, the tape works its way loose due to age or vibration. It can be strained through incorrect routing of cables, etc during assembly or repair. It can also come loose if the screen is hit or strained. The "fix" is to replace the screen. If it is under warranty, I suggest calling Lenovo.

My XP machine seems to think that a key is being pressed repeatedly. You can see the development of this discovery in a different topic here. It's keeping my screensaver from working, stopping disk checks, and preventing me from setting hotkeys.

Basically, once every second or so, XP thinks that a button is being pressed. I can't find any program that can identify the button. When I set hotkeys in my media program (foobar2000, if it makes any difference), it says the button being pressed is "(unknown)."

I was certain it was a hardware problem at first, but when I tried the program "showkeys" in a Linux livecd, it showed nothing was being pressed. I guess it's still possible it's a hardware problem and Linux and Windows are interpreting that problem differently.

If anybody has any idea of how to fix it, I would really appreciate it. It's causing a lot of problems.

A:XP thinks a nonexistant key is being pressed repeatedly

Have you tried using a different keyboard to see if the problem is in the current keyboard?

Hi Wayne,

Lets see if its an issue with any of the system files. Please try this:

1. Click
2. In the Search box, type cmd
3. Right-click on cmd and then click Run as administrator
4. When the command windows opens, type sfc /scannow and hit enter.

Report back the results of this process when its completed.
