Battery not charging. Laptop will function when conneted to adapter. Called support #, was told it was corrupted files, support can fix it for a price. If fix does not work will refund money. This seems like a scam.

We have an Envy x360, which has an internal battery that you cannot remove, or check to ensure it is seated properly without voiding the warranty. We cannot currently use the laptop without it being plugged in, as it is showing "plugged in, battery not charging, 0%".We have tried other charging cables.  No luck.   We have tried unplugging it then holding down the power key to drain then restarting.  No luck. We have tried going to contol panel and removing the ACPI compliant battery control and restarting.  No luck. We are at wits end. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Problem started two weeks ago. Could not power on the laptop, tried many different power outlets. Purchased a universal Laptop charger/cord and it still didn't work. Removed battery, attached power cord and could boot computer on...put the battery back in but battery would not take a charge even though the battery indicator light was amber and the icon in the Win tool bar displayed: 36% available (plugged in, charging). Clicked the icon and displayed 36%, Calculating... Left laptop turned on overnight with battery in and 8 hours later it was still at 36%. With Laptop turned on, I can remove Laptop power cord and battery will continue operation, depleting the battery but when I reconnect the power cord it does not charge the battery (no green light or amber light).  Bottom line, attached power cord with battery in and get no power (green or amber), period. Remove battery, attach power cord and I can boot up the computer. Ran Systems Test - Battery Check: Primary - Replace (42) and received Failure ID:  QAMPPV-82387T-MFGJXF-C0D703. This failure on a brand new battery just recieved two days ago. Same errors with the original battery.  Attempted a power reset to no avail. I could run laptop using the power cord only but doing this would defeat the purpose of owning a laptop. Running on battery will only deplete battery with no way to recharge it. Help!!! Searched forum for answer to my problem and found no... Read more

Hello, Several days ago my HP Envy x360 15 laptop battery started performing strangely - 100% charge lasts only for less than 25 min. and I started getting the HP error message (601) when starting the computer. The interesting thing is that this issue lasted for one day and then it disappeared (I did not do anything) - on the next day the battery performed as usual (around 5 hours on 100% charge). However, a day later the same issued occurred again and I have had it ever since. I keep getting that error message (601), but only when the laptop is not charging. I have installed several battery monitoring programs and I saw one interesting thing - when I connect the charging cable all those applications display correct designed and fully charged battery capacity, but as soon as I unplug the charging cable the designed and fully charged battery capacity shrinks nearly ten times (from around 38,000 to 3,680 mWh). The same thing happens with HP battery testing application - when plugged and charging, the application says the battery is ok and does not need to be replaced, but when I unplug the cable and run the battery test one more time it says that the battery needs to be replaced due to natural loss of capacity. The HP application shows that the battery has only been through around 170 charge cycles, so I presume this is no ordinary battery degradation issue. I tried manually calibrating the battery, reinstalling battery drivers, restoring OS to previous date, but nothing w... Read more

Howdy all,

The amazing folks at Tech Spot saved my bacon many moons back, helping me fix a virus laden laptop for my sick kid. And so I turn to you with my latest computer nightmare and beg of your assistance once again!

I just bought a new HP ENVY TouchSmart 17t-j100 Quad Edition Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR) for my daughter for Christmas. It arrived yesterday and I opened it up, to start preloading her software onto it so she can have it ready to go Christmas morning.

Unfortunately, the thing just won't let me get connected to the internet via wifi!

It is using an Intel Wireless-N 7260 adapter, running Windows 8.1 (factory installed). I have tried everything I could think of - using Intel drivers instead of Microsoft ones, resetting WINSOCK, flushing the DNS, using a static IP instead of dynamic, the works. Nothing appears to be working. The device can clearly see my network - it shows up on the list of connections, and validates my security information (running standard WEP security - not the best I know but it's easier for the multitude of tech I have on my network, all of which connects fine), but it only gives me limited access and does not want to connect to the network or the internet.

My base system is running Windows 7. My router is a Netgear Rangemax Wireless-N Gigabit Router WNR3500 v2.

I have not tried a hardwire connection yet, as I really need this to be a wireless device.

Help me, TechSpot Gurus....you're my only hope!

Hey Mark. I would connect to the Net by cable and allow it to get any OS updates and/or driver updates before I change any settings. While online, try to connect wirelessly to see if it finds any updates quicker.

Hi @Pink70? ,Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY x360 Convertible PC and issues with the battery charging while plugged in and on. I have checked into this and it would see that is is a power loss issue. Plug the power adapter directly into a functioning wall outlet. Do not plug it into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source as this could cause and issue. If that does not solve this, please use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/Case number and phone number appear. They will be happy to assist you immediately. I turned on my brand new HP Envy x360 Notebook last night. It asked me for a Microsoft id, password and pin. I did all that and entered it into my Envy. I then turned off the WIFI and turned off the notebook and went to bed. Today I turned on the notebook and the screen lit up nicely. The screen asked me to type in my Microsoft pin. I did and a mesage came up that says "Your device is offline. Sign in with the last password used on this device." I hit okay. Then the screen asks me for the pin again. It won't accept a password. It wants a numerical pin. It won't accept my pin or open the computer. What do I do?

Ok let me cut to the chase: I;ve tried all "normal" test and options to verify what the problem isn't: it's not the battery and not the AC charger .  What I really want to know is whether anyone has solved this problem by replacing the motherboard or changing BIOS. HP has been of no help on this matter, and they actually want me to just buy a new laptop or pay them $350 to let them "fix it".  Two things I find strange are: why have there been no BIOS updates in the 3 years since this laptop was built, and I'm also seeing that there is no download whatsoever for even a reinstall of BIOS; and also, why -- despite the fact that MANY people seem to have had battery/power/charging issues on HP laptops in the past few years (if not longer) -- am I seeing no actual root causes online? I don't want to just throw money at the problem (forgive me, but I'm an engineer), I want to know what's going on and whether I can expect the problem to happen again. I've been through 3 batteries, and 2 chargers and the story is the same: the HP Diagnostics (UEFI?) tell me the battery needs to be replaced.  The battery never gets charged above the charge level it was at when I receive the new battery (70-75% charge for all 3 batteries), and draining the battery to a low level (about 5%) and it doesn't go up.  The laptop is not charging the battery. I get an orange light which tells me it's "trying" to charge the battery, and the behavior is the same for 2 ... Read more

I have a brand new Pavillion 15. Product number:L2U58EA#ABUSerial number:5CD5040VVW The battery displays as pluged in and not charging, the notebook boots fine on power with no battery, and on power with battery fitted. However it will not boot off battery alone and the battery indicator LED does not show a charge. It briefly shows orange but then moves to blinking white. I have tried the charger on another HP Pavillion and this works perfectly so the power source does not seem to be the issue. There is no apparent damage to the battery terminals, it just appears to not take a charge. As the machine and bettery are new I would assume there is warranty cover for the battery. Any help is much appreciated.

Hello,I bought 1 month ago  the new envy 360 model (15-aq060nz) from the HP store swizerland. It comes with a QWERTZ keyboard - SWISS. This is the standard keyboard in switzerland. The problem is that the key containing the 3 characters: <>\ (next to the space bar) is wrongly mapped to <ctrl> key. This occurs when selecting either Swiss-french or Swiss-german logical keyboard (which is the normal setting used in switzerland).  I have contacted the HP support and my case was treated there. However, I have received this strange answer back:We confirm this is an issue with the particular model and we cannot provide any solution other than buying an external swiss keyboard and use it instead of the standard laptop keyboard if you want to use "<", ">" or "\" keys. You have to contact the commercial people to find out a commercial solution. If this is true, this means that the model I bougth can simply not be sold in Swizerland as anyone here will use the same original HW keyboard I have. Frankly, I simply cannot believe that it is a HW issue. The physical keys are not directly bound to an ASCII character. There is a translation between HW key and locale representation. I would say that the only thing needed is a BIOS update Am I totally wrong? Thanks a lot,José

What's the difference between the HP Spectre x360 and the HP Envy x360? They both look the same. The only noticeable difference is that HP Spectre x360 has a Radiance Infinity display, while HP Envy x360 has an IPS display. Having the same specs, except for the display, why is the Spectre x360 more expensive than the Envy x360 ? Moreover, I thought that IPS is better than TN, which is my guess that is the technology used for the Radiance Infinity.

A:HP Spectre x360 vs HP Envy x360

Hi, You've got few questions about those products. Well, come to a store and yoy can see the differences. Better still, you can buty 2 machines and compare.  For build quality, the HP Spectre x360 is much better than the Envy x360 you can also find Pavilion x360 - we are talking about SPECS and BUILD here about plastics and metals about wood and gold. Regards.

Hi all,

Laptop is a 5 years old HP Pavilion DM4-2153ca.

Issue started a few months ago when laptop was shutting down at 63% battery, and when I plugged it it would charge until 9x% and then say "plugged in, not charging".
In the meantime I upgraded to Windows 10 and the issue wasn't solved.
I formatted and did a clean install of Windows 10 and still not solved.
HP advised I revert back to Windows 7 as this is the "original" OS for my somewhat old laptop.

So I just re-installed OEM Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 that came with the laptop, and the issue got worse, now it shuts down at 96%.

I also uninstalled and re-installed battery drivers, didn't work.
I tested the battery in the HP UEFI Support environment and it passed, so I can't calibrate it.

At this point I don't know what to do, and I don't think it's a battery related issue because it never fully discharges. The laptop just shuts down before! Help!!

A:Laptop shuts down at 96% battery and "Plugged in, not charging" issue

This is battery issue, nothing relates to windows &or battery drivers, if any.

If you leave the battery plugged in all the time, with the main power on.
Sooner or later, battery will not be able to charge properly, as you encountered now.

The percentage you see may not be real, hence it may force the laptop to shutdown without warning.
There is nothing you can do, unless either get a new battery, or use it as home with main power on.

Hi
I need any help that can be offered. I recently bought a brand new HP laptop from Best Buy. It is supposed to be a pretty decent machine, however it is VERY slow when restarting, booting up, and when in operation. The browser ( IE, Nightly, Chrome,) usually takes anywhere form 10 to 30 seconds to load ANYTHING. When i try to open a program it has a usual response time of 10 seconds. even when i press the windows key it takes several seconds to bring up the home screen. I have installed and used CCleaner to modify start programs and regularly clean the cache. It is very frustrating and i would appreciate any help.

Great laptop, put it through a lot of testing in my first weekend of owning it and I'm quite pleased overall. This issue has nothing to do with the laptop itself but rather the included sleeve, which I'm also pleased was included as other brands/models I checked out did not include a sleeve. However... it smells really awful.  I mean it's really an exceptionally terrible rubbery type odor.  And it's not as if it's only when I put my nose up to it or even handle it.  It can just be sitting a few feet away from me and I smell it.  I tried washing it by hand, figuring it's just an extreme example of factory chemicals or materials not being completely washed away before packaging.  This act may have reducded the smell by 20-25%, but the stench was still very noticeable so I put it through a wash in the washing machine.  Again, it's possible it's reduced the smell down to 50% of what it started as, but it's still pretty ridiculous how bad this thing smells. Has anyone had the same experience?  Have you had better luck in removing the smell?  I'm sure someone will suggest that it's free and maybe not worth the effort and therefore to just look into a different sleeve but I like it aside from the odor and would like to be able to keep it for some extra protection / padding even once I decide on a method for carrying the device around if possible.  But it will not be worth it if I can't get rid of the odor.

Hi, I'm having troubles turning my laptop on. I have a Hp Envy 15 Touchsmart. I've tried doing a reboot by taking the battery out and holding power for a minute and trying to reboot it but nothing happened. It was plugged in and fully charged when it turned off. The charging light is still on when it is plugged into the wall.A few weeks ago it randomly restarted and shut off when I was watching a movie on it but it rebooted no problem. My phone fell out of my hand 3 nights ago and landed just left of the track pad when it shut off and won't turn back on.

Greetings,    I have owned this laptop for over 2 years and have encountered many problems which have required me to open up my laptop and remove debree/dust from the interior. My last adventure included removing the fan and heatsink from the inside, but when I assembled the laptop back together it will not start up. When plugged in the white led light still shows next the the charger socket, but the power button will not light up after several tries. The fan does not start to spin either.   I have tried the hold the power for 1 minute idea, but it does not change anything.I have 3 possible conclusion that are very unlikly to me.1.  I worked on carpet and had static  electrickery! Doubt it.2. The harddrive is not working properly3. The memory is not working properlyAny fixes to these above? any other possible causes?

I own an HP Envy TouchSmart 15 Notebook PC product number: E0K05UA#ABA and Model: 15-j053cl

I had a couple plastic screw inserts that hold the right side hinge to the top cover of the laptop break due to very high strength of the hinges which caused the top cover of the laptop to pry apart from the base enclosure when opened (a problem many owners of this laptop model have had). Since I was out of warranty I ordered a replacement on Ebay using the correct part number 720570-001 and disassembled my laptop to make the repairs and loosen the hinges while I was at it. I swapped out all parts being careful to note where and how plugs and ribbons were connected so I could put it back together correctly. Now after having it reassembled it will not turn on.

I get a white LED light to turn on when I plug in the power cord AC adapter (should be amber/orange in color to signify it is charging the battery) but no other sounds lights or signs of life. I have attempted to remove the battery and power cord, pressed the power button for 8-30 seconds to drain power and do a reset and then try to power up with plugging in the power cord but it won’t turn on. I also tried to power up by removing one part at a time including the hard drive, two RAM sticks, and wireless card but still not able to turn on. Do you have any ideas for what may be wrong or steps I can take to troubleshoot? Is this possible a mother board issue? Everything was working fine before embarking on this r... Read more

Hello!I bought my computer about 11 months ago for college and the past month it has been having some weird cracking noises when opening/closing the lid. A friend of mine told me to watch out since he had the same computer and it had broken off. I noticed today that theroght hinge is actually starting to come out and the base of the computer is also getting loose. This is very strange since I barely move my computer from the desk since it is so big, plus I have a smaller one that I use to take to classes so I don't mess with this one for stuff that is unnecessary. I wanted to know how this can be repaired.Thank you!

I have a HP ENVY notebook of model TouchSmart 15-j127tx.Using the laptop causes eye fatigue after 15 minutes itself. The White color background is the main cause and I experience eye fatigue  even after trying many combinations of  brightness and contrast. I have adjusted the gamma settings to different levels and even used the Display Colour Calibration within Win 10 to improve the display, but the result is same. At first, I thought only I have this problem, but over the time, people whoever uses my notebook complain the same. I use a different  brand laptop for work, which does not have a touch display. I work on that laptop for more than 10 hours a day but don't feel eye fatigue. But when I use this HP laptop, always, I feel the strain on my eyes. Can anyone help on this. Thanks.

Hello,

I've had this problem off an on for probably about a year now. Randomly my clickpad (I think that's what it's called...the mouse on my laptop) stops working. Either the cursor will freeze and disappear when I touch the screen or it just doesn't appear when I open my laptop. I found a fix once that said to just go into the Device Manager and either update or rollback the driver and that worked the first time....but doesn't seem to be the answer as it continues to happen. Luckily I have the touchscreen or I'd be really annoyed but its tough to do work with just the touchscreen. Can anyone help me keep the cursor/clickpad working?

When I update/roll back the driver I go to:
Device Manager > System Devices > Synaptics SMBus > Properties > Driver

Hello,  This is my first time on this site and I have been having some trouble with my computer.FIrst of all, my computer is the HP Envy 23 Touchsmart PC and its roughly around 3-4 years old. For all this time, it has been working fine without any problems, but one day I was playing a game on my computer and it randomly shut down. At first, I thought I accidentally kicked a cord, so I made sure every cord was in their sockets tightly. Thinking it was a loose cord that caused it to shut down, I tried to turn it on again. Unfortunately, there was no luck.   In furthur investigation on my computer, I noticed my power cord was making a small beeping/chirping noise every 2-3 seconds with its green light flashing on and off in sync with the green light. What I found interesting was when I unplugged the power cord from the computer, the green light would actually stay solid without it blinking or making any noise. When i replug it back in, it continues to blink and make the small beeping noise again. As a computer amateur, I am afraid to open my computer up and try to fix the problem myself. And I was also hoping for some solutions here on this site before bringing it into a store to get it fixed.  I also updated my computer to Windows 10 if any of that matters. Thank you for your time!

Hello,I purchased an HP Envy Laptop my first year of College, and it has served me well to a point. But recently, I noticed that there was some separation happening in the body of the laptop, just next to the right hinge area. The "metal" and plastic pieces of the casing were pulling apart from each other. This began to cause problems with my disk drive as well, I believe. It became more concerning when it began happening on the right side as well, and likely caused problems with the fan.At this point, the left side of the casing, right by the vent snaps out and back into place whenever I open my laptop. As this is a problem that could be getting worse virtually every time I use the computer, it makes it stressful to enjoy my HP device. If this continues, more problems will undoubtedly arise.I need a solution to this, lest my HP experience be ruined.Thank you for your time. I do appreciate and respect it.

Hello,  I purchased an HP Envy Touchsmart 15 a little over a year ago. The hinge seems to have come unglued fromt the inside. I read that the HP Envy is prone to this, since the hinge is glued in production as opposed to being fastened with a screw. I'm a graduate student, and I'm unable to use my HP for schoolwork due to the faulty hinge. The computer has been handled carefully, and it's never been dropped. This is my first HP. It was great when it was working; however, a laptop that costs nearly a grand and works only for 1 year due to the construction is extremelhy dissapointing.  I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how it was handled by HP. I purchased it through costco, so I should have an extended 2 year warranty on the device.  Thanks in advance,  Alexandria

Try changing the date in BIOS to 1/01/2012. Save & Exit. Boot from Recovery and let it run through the process- but on the first reboot it initiates enter BIOS to ensure date is still modified. If so let Recovery resume-if not change it again then resume.

Does anyone know what this part is?  I'd really like to know its part number because I'm trying to order a replacement.  It has the power button on one side, and on the internal side it has screw-ins for the fan and one of the speakers.  It is a black plastic part that runs along the side that the fan blows out and flattens out on both sides.  It was glued to the metal case.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

I purchased an HP Envy Touchsmart 23". It was used little over the three years. Last week, when starting up it started to display the message reading "Critical error/your start menu isn't working. We'll try to fix it next time you sign in". After several attempts of power off and restart, hoping the fix would happen, my HP simply stopped responding to the power on switch. The power on switch would light up indicating that the power was on, but the screen would not light up or indicate activity. Best Buy, where I purchased the computer, could not assess the problem locally - they could only arrange to send it to somewhere in BC, for an assessment that would take 2 to 6 weeks. Can anyone help?

Gps3, welcome to the forum. When requesting help you should always include the make/model (i.e. p6-xxxx) of the computer and/or monitor. This information is necessary for us to review the specifications of them.  Also, have you upgraded to Win 10?

Last year while my daughter was at school she started reporting to me that her HP Envy Touchsmart 15" laptop's case was pulling apart at the corners.  Then she started reporting hearing rattling noises inside the case, then the fan stopped working.   I called HP support, and was told by one person the laptop was under warranty, but that wouldn't be covered because of normal wear and tear.  I called back later and then was told the laptop was not under warranty.  I called back several times, and got a variety of answers all of which added up to between $300 and $500 for repairs on a laptop that I spent $700 on! When she came home for a break from school, I took apart the laptop and removed the debries from the fan (I had purchased a replacement fan which I didn't need) and the laptop stopped overheating.  Next I tackled the hinge problem which by this time had progressed to be both hinges.  The weak plastic connections on the bottom were in bad shape, cracked and peices missing.  So (being the brain surgeon I am ) I decided to use epoxy to more firmly affix the hinges to the case.  That fix has now failed. I have seen and posted on other threads that this type of failure is (despite what HP support says) fairly common in the whole line of HP consumer grade laptops!  Before this, I had mainly used HP business grade laptops and had thought that the quality there would also be in the consumer grade laptops.  My... (I coulnd't find any category that best matched my question - I think this is the closest) Hi,  Does any of you know where I could buy an HP Envy TouchSmart 17 Notebook from around 2014 (NOT the new models with the 6th gen core i7)?  I saw that I could get one with an Nvidia GeForce 750M, 4 GB of graphcis DDR3, an i7-4900MQ (quad-core, 2.8 GHz turbo to 3.8 GHz),16 GB of RAM, and dual hard drives.   The Maintenence and Service Guide for the system I'm looking for (as well as other configurations of it) is here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04091762. I did find one on eBay, however it did not have the exact configuration I want; you can see that listing here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/RB-HP-ENVY-TOUCHSMART-17-J141NR-I7-4700MQ-2-4G-wbr-Hz-16GB-1TB-1-wbr-7-3-034... So, do you guys know of any place I can buy the notebook I'm looking for?  I didn't see the exact one on eBay or Amazon. Thanks very much to all who reply.

The hinge on my laptop is broken. I have seen a few posts about this issue but I am a student and can't afford a repair. I'm guessing I'll just have to put up with it until it's finally unusable

The computer was stuck on the HP screen and I ran a test and the hard drive failed. I bought a new hard drive and was about to start recovery but decided to power off and reboot before starting the process. I now have a blank display. The lights are all okay, fan is running and    no beeps for errors.  Does anyone have any idea how to get the display to start working? I tried all types of keystrokes but nothing seems to work.  Going to give it one more try before I send this computer to the junk yard.  Thanks

Hi there, The Wifi on this laptop keeps either dropping connection, or changing to a "limited" network. Sometimes it works fine, but more often than not it drops out. All other wifi enabled devices in my house work fine, so I know it's not the internet. I've also tested on two other networks where the same dropping out occurs. I have no idea where to begin with this really so would be grateful for any help!  Windows 8 64 BitIntel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 (up to date) Thanks

Hello. I have just bought this notebook and I searching on google i noticed it has an internal M.2 port next to the HDD, and in this hp official manual it mentions M.2 SSS support, but not for this specified model. How do i check compatibility ? (mostly with BIOS). It would be awesome if i could add a SSD without loosing the 1TB hdd.  Thank you.

Hi @threadfin410?, What email are you using (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo...)? And are you accessing it in an Internet browser? Do you access the same email account on any other devices? When the messages are deleted, can you still find them in your Deleted/Trash folder? Any additional info would be helpful.

Hi All, Just purchased  HP Spectre x360 - 13-4007tu in Oct.  Upgraded immediately to win 10 on receipt and updated all the drivers automatically via HP support assistant. Finnaly Got a chance to connect the notebook to my TV via HDMI. However it DOES NOT detect any external monitor except the built-in in the "graphics properties" -"select display". But when I connect to my old lenovo laptop, it picks up the same setting ( TV via HDMI ) straight away I have double checked all windows / Hp updates all latest ; go back and give a few tries and still no-go. Please help as to say the least i am very dissapointed  of HP for such a high-end work machine. The audio has been buzzy and scratchy but not crucial, whereas HDMI is for any presentation etc. Thanks for your help.

A:HDMI not working on brand new HP Spectre x360

Hi @melfes?, Thank you for your query.  I grasp that you are having a difficulty connecting a TV via HDMI to your notebook. You have done all your Windows updates and ran the HPSA.  Here is a link to the HP Spectre x360 - 13-4007tu Software and Driver page to manually check that you have all the updated drivers and the latest bios update. Here are two links that may also be of aid. HP Notebook PCs - Connecting a Monitor, Projector, or TV (Windows 10, 8) HP Notebook PCs - Updating the BIOS. A bios update does have the potential to cause damage. I suggest contacting HP support for assistance with that process. Please contact HP support at Contact HP Support. Please let me know the outcome. Thank you  for participating in the HP Forums! I just got a new HP Spectre x360 - 13-4005dx and it works quite well EXCEPT that the screen regular goes black for a moment and then flashes back on. Typically black for a fraction of a second--maybe a second or two at most.  HUGELY FRUSTRATING. I have gone through and updated all of the drivers. Any idea? thanks, joel

That doesn't seem normal, and you should just get an exchange. If you got it at Best Buy, it should be a quick exchange (if they're in stock).
