How to find missing file after a copying large folder

Q: How to find missing file after a copying large folder

I am backing up my Win 7 folder just before moving to WIN 8. The folder is 65G in size. I just copy and paste from my laptop hard drive to my external USB drive. I started the copying just before I went to bed last night. This morning I saw a pop up windows saying that 12 files cannot be copied because the path is too long. The option is "skip' or 'Cancel'. I took the skip option and the copy job completed. But it does not tell me the name of the 12 files that I skipped.
Now my problem is how do I found out which 12 files are missing in my backup.
I know that I can do the copy paste again and watch out for the error message. But it is a waste of time sitting in front of the screen. That was why I do it over night.
What is the best way to do this kind of work other than using some backup software.

I'm having trouble with a game all of a sudden and I'm not sure if it's hardware or software related, so I may try to reinstall the game (even though it has been working perfectly fine for 4 years until now ) and see if that helps.

The game... NASCAR Racing 2003 Season... takes up about 15 gigs on my hard drive. I will burn most of the files to a CD, but I'd like to copy the entire folder or subfolders somewhere else on my hard drive (ample space) to make it an easier transfer later on.

The folder is 15 Gb. Will Windows let me copy and paste something that big? How long will it take?

Or is there a certain reasonable limit for each copy and paste? Don't want to make my CPU and hard drive explode to make matters worse.

I am trying to copy a 22 MB file to a new computer from an OLD Win 95 OS computer. It has no internet, no CD writer, only floppy access. I know PKZip will allow copying to multiple floppies, but I need to make sure it works with Win 95. There is an older version of this product, but do I need two different Zip programs to be able to install on the new XP computer?

Thanks

Good morning,

My apologies in advance for posting a question that has been answered many times here and on the interwebs already, but the answers I find are mostly the same and I need further clarification, if possible.

I work at as a tech at a law firm and I'm having an issue where 2 users are using a shared excel workbook to copy and paste data into from miscellaneous client websites, such as client names, loan numbers, etc.

Every once and a while, when one of the users is done making their changes and saves their work, their workbook size will jump anywhere between 20MB and 250MB in size from the original, which is usually in the lower KB range. All answers I've found include copying and pasting the content into a new spreadsheet, recreating the document, finding the last used cell with Ctrl+End and clearing the blank spaces, and removing text styles like boldness and colors. All these solutions do work, but it's hard to keep telling an attorney to do these things without them biting your head off about it - because this does happen multiple times a day on this one spreadsheet. It is, in fact, due to blank cells, as the last active cell usually hits the 1,000,000 number range when the file size jumps up.

I heard there's away to lock a spreadsheet to a predetermined cell count, but I'm still researching this method. If anyone can provide me further explanation on why this happens and how to prevent it, please do. Thanks in advance.

I try to copy a 3GB file from a Windows 7 machine to a Windows XP machine but the network utilization during the copy is less than 10% so it takes hours to finish. The wireless LAN is 54Mbps. Hi all,

I have a really big issue with one of my computer when copying large file (about more than 1GB).

When I copy a large file, 10GB for instance, after the time calcution for copy, the copy begins but the progress bar never goes after 1%. Even if I let the copy working all the night, the status stays the same. I have this issue if I copy a file from a folder to another one or if I copy it from my computer to an external hard drive (both NTFS).

I have another computer with Windows 7 Enterprise which does not have this kind of problem.

Could you help me on this issue?

Thank you very much

I am puzzled why, as far as I can tell, everything else seems to be there except this one single folder.

This is what happened: I run registry cleaner section in Ccleaner, and following that it was giving me an error message that the locally stored profile can't load, and it could only log me on with a temporary profile. Needless to say, I could not access any of the things in my profile.

I took my computer to the service place, but first nothing was done for 3 days (3 very painful days without my computer and being worried about the fate of my things on it...) and then the IT guy did work on it some, but I don't know what he did and I don't think he did much or didn't get far in any case, because when I picked my computer up there was no difference.

After that I was searching for some answers or suggestions on various forums etc. I tried system restore but it could not restore it. Then I ran chkdsk and it worked, it repaired one file (ntuser) and then my profile loaded back, looking like it always did before, except that as far as I was able to remember, one single folder is missing.

I looked in the hidden files and folders (by doing: windows explorer : tools : folder options : view tab : check show hidden files and folders : uncheck hide protected operating system files : OK) but I don't see it there.

The folder I am talking about was probably quite large, containing many sizable word documents and a number of pdf files. I think it was in "my documents&... Read more

I went into an image folder, right clicked on a image, and selected copy. I then left the folder to paste the image in another spot. Well for some reason when I went back into the folder I copied the image from everything in it was gone.
I first checked the recycle bin but there wasn't anything there. I'm assuming it is due to the file being large sized. It was full of photoshop images my husband had worked on. That is the main reason I'm worried they are gone. We did have some files I backed up but haven't done it in a while.
I tried doing the Previous Versions tab but there wasn't nothing. I checked hidden files and nothing. I then tried a system restore and then undid it since it didn't help.
I'm out of ideas to try. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Hello all,

I'm running a genuine copy of Windows 7 Ultimate. I just completed a fresh install (with MS's help) and now I'm reinstalling all my files and programs. I have copied the "My Documents" folder from a backup drive to another drive. However, I noticed that in the source drive there are "214 items" but in the destination drive there are only "144 items". This is my second attempt at trying to move the files from one drive to another. The first time I copied the times, only 114 items copied over.

This doesn't make sense. Maybe because there are too many files or it's too large of data for the clipboard? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

I cannot copy or paste jpeg files from my computer to my SD 2GB cards. Also, I get this msg when I try to print jpeg files. Using Adobe Elements I am able to archive these files. Oddly enough I can attach and send these jpeg files via email. Prior to August '08 was able to do these tasks without a problem. I suspect that there is a software compatibility problem since this problem came on suddenly (maybe iTunes?). No problems importing jpeg files from SD cards. A:Error copying file or folder; cannot copy img the directory or file cannot be created

This has caught me more than once.

The problem is a limitation on the number of files and folders allowed in the root folder of a FAT16 file system (as for a memory card) of 512. (Note, this number is reduced much further if longer file names than 8 characters are used, as most people will want to).

When transferring the files onto the card, new files will be rejected when you hit this limit.

So keep your files in separate folders, so they are not all in the root folder.

For files and folders in root it might be worth keeping your filenames under 8 characters in length so you can use the full 512 files on root folder.

Any clue as to what this file/folder is all about? And, more importantly, how to delete it? (Assuming it's not necessary.)

I was going to try to upload a .txt file here, but it is 62.22mb; and zipping the file only went down to about 42mb
I managed to take a screenshot of a small portion of the .txt doc contents. (I got that .txt file by using this DOS command: dir>0bad.txt)

I've also tried to put the folder in my Comodo\s file list, so that I can mark it as: malicious.

I have just received a running out of system disk memory notice on my Windows XP desktop computer. I was a bit surprised because I don't store much on the system disk, and as part of an exercise discussed on another thread here I had recently cleaned it up. I ran a scan with AVG free which came up with nothing and also Spybot S&D which cleaned out as many temp files as it could. After this I noticed one very large "hidden" folder remaining in the temp folder. It was called ~eu0000. In it was a single file called .eunf.

I have a dual boot so I could probably quite easily delete the folder and file, but before doing so I am curious as to whether it might have been caused by malware.

The composite image above shows the location of files on my very full system drive, as well as the results of the AVG scan.

This image shows the Windows temp folder (after the S&D cleanup) containing the offending large folder.

I should appreciate any thoughts anyone has on this.

Hello, I recently restored a bunch of my data on from a messed up hard-drive to my friend's computer.

I am at his house right now trying to get the files back, but I have run into an issue that is starting to drive me INSANE!

He is on XP Pro, and I am running Vista Ultimate. We are both on the same network, and I can view my shared files from his XP machine. I can see his computer in the network from my Vista machine, but whenever I try and go into his computer I am prompted to log in. I use his login information, but it ALWAYS gives me a login error.

When asked to login to my Vista machine from his XP machine, I log in with my username and everything works fine.

However, when I try to write files to my Vista machine, I get this error:

Error copying file or folder:

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

If I was able to write files to my Vista machine from his XP machine, it would literally take 5 minutes to copy what I need over

If anyone knows how to get around this, PLEASE help! I really need my files back for work and school, and this is really starting to get aggravating.

Thanks for the help,

Hi, first I would like to quote the information printed to the display screen with the problem I am having.

"Error Copying File or Folder

Cannot Copy <FileName>: There is not enough free disk space.

Delete one or more files to free disk space, and then try again."

Some things first;

I am attempting to save a file which is not even a MB in size.

I am attempting to save to a NTFS drive.

I am saving to an external network drive.

The drive has more than 200 GB free space.

No users on the network are able to save or copy a file to the drive, including special priviledge accounts.

A mere 3 weeks ago we were able to use the drive perfectly well.

This has occured before, but was fixed somehow. There was no documentation which leads me to believe it was fixed by error.

The machines used to attempt to save to the drive are all Windows XP machines, fully updated. The drive is located within the internal network and is accessible by all users of a specific room.

Any help is appreciated,

Thank you.

A:Error copying file or folder

Given the length of the filename, I would be willing to bet you're bumping into the limit for a filename.

Microsoft is happy to tell you that file names in Windows can be up to 255 characters long. What they neglect to tell you is that the FULL PATH is included. So say you have C:\Some_folder\another_folder\one_more_folder\some_really_excessively_long_and_obnoxious_file_name.txt that will be a 102 character long file name. If you exceed 255 characters, you tend to get a rather misleading error message like you received. Try shortening the name of the file, getting rid of the string of numbers for example, and I'd be willing to bet it will copy just fine.

Closest thing I've found would be 499663EE.

Click Start | Run (or press WinKey+R), type cmd, press Enter.
Type these lines (or copy/paste), press Enter after each:

Code:

Who are you logged in as? Often, if you've got a personalised account, the default is 'User'. You'll probably want to be in the 'Power Users' category at least. Log in as Administrator and see if you can do it, or maybe modify your user access from Administrator, and then do it with your account.

If you're in as Administrator, then it's probably that there are some files with the name that you're copying in that directory already that are marked as Read Only, so if you really want to over-write them, right-click, properties and remove the 'read-only' flag.

Good luck and happy flying.

Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use.

On the Laptop I click on Start - Network - Laptop icon, I cannot drop any files into any folders: ie Public - Users, or any of them, all I receive is the error message:

You need permission to perform this action.

I am the Administrator on the Laptop and Desktop ie: the only user, how do I obtain the permission.

I have followed a number of tips on how to tweak Vista and have found that the option offered in Vista to copy / replace files has been now deactivated. Instead I am now only offered an option like that previously offered in XP.

I'd really appreciate if someone might talk me through re-enabling this expanded file copying option.

Thanks.

I have to move a few thousand files and folders from my desktop to external USB hard drives to free up space on the desktop drive.

I need to keep the original folder and file dates. When I copy or move folders, Windows changes the folder date, but does keep the file date (created, modified and last accessed now become the current date.)

Is there any "tweak" in Windows I can do in order to keep all the dates accurate?

I've even tried a couple backup programs to move/copy files, and the folder date is changed to the current date in all three categories as above.

Hello. I was just navigating through different files and
folders and then accidently pressed a couple of keys with one finger. I
looked over at my folder list, and the folder I was working in ("Property")
had disappeared. I don't believe I hit the Delete key, and don't see this
folder or it's files in the Delete folder.

I looked through every other folder and file in my list and
cannot find this entire folder or any of its files.

Any suggestions on how I might find it?

Thank you very much.

A:Copying many large files to USB HD, how to que up?

Hi bonkboy,

Welcome to TSG!

The easiest thing to do is write a script.

Let's assume that writing scripts is new or that you do not know how to write one.

Here is an example of a script (Note - since I don't know what OS you are running, this script may not work on your particular OS or any OS due to errors in the script, but it will give you an idea of how to do what you want as a first cut):

#! /bin/sh
# name of script is: copyscript.sh
todir=$1
fromdir=$2
filelist=`ls -1 $1 $fromdir`
for i in $filelist
cp $i $todir
end
exit

Note: $1 and $2 are the first and second parameters passed into the script from the command line.

You would first need to make the script executable:
$ chmod +x copyscript.sh

Then you would need to invoke the script, as follows:
$ ./copyscript.sh <todir> <fromdir>
where you would replace todir without the brackets (<>) with the full pathname to the folder aka directory where the USB HD is mounted, and, similarly, replace fromdir without the brackets (<>) with the full pathname to the folder aka directory where the files to be copied are currently located.

You can start here to learn about Shell Scripting and go from there according to your system (Windows, Mac, Linux/Unix).

I am using XP Pro - I need to copy a large file from one removable hard drive to another. About 37GB. Windows keeps running a copy for a while then locks up and kicks me out - usually with very little data copied.

Is there a work around or program that can do this?

A:Copying Large Files

strange - it should work,

do you have a power setting if idel turn off hardrives etc

I copyed 200GB of data from one removable to another over the weekend - so it should work

you could try copying to the PC and then from PC to drive

In short I cant copy my music and pic dvd. Have a lot of files (almost 4gb). It gets to about 60% and stops copying as per the screenshot. Sometimes it tells me I have not enough memory to complete the opration (not the case as my hard drives are 160gb with plenty of space)

I have tried copying it to my Master hard drive, slave hard drive and External USB drive, all with the same result.

Hi there, I have a failing hard drive that I'm trying to recover data off of, only problem is I guess there are bad sectors or corrupt files because every now and again I get a 'can not read source file from disk' and have to skip the file. Which is fine. However; this does mean that I can't just leave it and come back later because any files that can't be read are going to interrupt the process. I'm wondering if there's a program that can simply automate this for me. I'm trying teracopy as I type this but it's been stuck on the same file for the past ten minutes and I'm not sure if it will skip the file after so long or not and the skip button its self hasn't allowed me to skip the file. I'm trying to copy about 300GB of saved data so it would be really nice if I didn't have to monitor the movement of it.

Briefly.....I wanted to install a program from a DVD onto my D drive called ECAT, so when the program asked where to install it I browsed for my D drive and created a folder called ECAT......The program didnt install as it came up with error messages.  I have since found out that the program HAS to be called what the program states, and NOT a user defined one......
Now as the program didnt install it no files were written.........So now when I come to install the program again, this time intending to call it EXACTLY as the program states, the first page of the installation wiil not let me change the location or name of the installation folder. It keeps coming up with the location and drive I INITIALLY asked it to be installed too....
I am guessing the program has written a secret/hidden file or folder somewhere on my D drive.... however I CANNOT FIND IT. I have tried the following.....
CC cleaned the D drive
Registry search for any file that is similar to the program name (ECAT)
A Disk Clean on D Drive
Used a program called DISK LOOK, nothing found!!!

So after all of the above the program (ECAT) still finds this hidden/invisible installation folder called D:\ECAT and WILL NOT let me browse to anyother folder or drive.....
the picture below shows the installation page....Im hoping you guys can help me out by telling me how I can get rid of this folder or install the program in its proper name and folder

THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!!!

A:Created a folder/file and now I cant find it to delete it

1) Did you use the "Windows Registry Editor" to look for "ECAT" ?
2) Did you make "Hidden Files" visible before you ran your search ?
3) Have you checked your install program to see if it has "ECAT" entered in it somewhere ?

Hi,
I have problem.
When I'm copying large files from from C disc to D disc (two phisical hdd drives) it consumer all my free memory. First it starts really fast, transfer rate is cca. 80-90MB/s, and when it fills all avaliable memory (I'm monitoring task manager) then it starts to slow, to 10-20MB/s till copying is finished. During that time working anything else in windows is almost impossible as everything is very slow. Strange thing is, when I'm copying reverse from D disc to C disk everything is as it should be, during copying transfer rate stays at 80-90MB/s, it consumes some 200-300MB of memory, and windows response is statisfying. I have a fresh installed Windows 7, before that I have XP.

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 running XP. I also have a Seagate 250 gig external hard drive where I keep music, photo, and movie files. Lately, I began to get delayed write errors when copying/moving files from the c drive to my external (g) drive. I looked online for some fixes, went into the properties of both drives, and disabled the cache (whatever that means!). Now, I'm not getting the delayed write errors, but the moving/copying of large files is taking much longer that it was before. Copying a 1 gig folder will now take up to 5 minutes, when before any of these issues started, it used to take a few seconds. I did a chkdsk of the external drive and the issue continues. Any ideas what could be going on? Thank you all in advance for your replies.

Hello there!

Recently i purchased this rig:

q6600
evga gt8800 supeclocked
Asus P5N-D
HDD- samsung HD753LJ -750Gb
some crap dvd burner

System is:Xp 32-bit sp3
Latest drivers and bios

So i started to copy some of the files from my full to the brim laptop Acer Aspire 5610 thought LAN.
2-3 times the system hangs. 2 of them when watching from VEOH
Well not exactly just became so slow that the mouse need 15sec to move 5cm on the screen. Keyboard responding with same speed.Cant open the process manager even.

So i have the following ideas:

1st HDD heats up too much maybe some failsafe feature ?
Was really hot before i installed a cooler and monitored the temp -26 deg. If the program shows it right. Still hanged 1 time after the installation of the cooler.

Tho i couldn't c the temp in the moment before it hangs as i was watching something on the VEOH full screen.

2nd guess is somth from the Flash player ?
Tho normally the Firefox shuts itself down if there is any problems.
But i had some dab experiences with it as well.

3rd guess SP3 ?
I am thinking of uninstalling it?
Some final thoughts if it were a single processor rig i would understand if that happens(explolrer get screwed or somth), but on quad core

oh and I am talking folders > 6GB with lots of files.

Any insights or ideas are appreciated.

I'm currently getting what it seems like windows explorer ( or the status box when copying ) hangs when i try to copy files over 1gb ( i copy like 5 or more 350Mb files and its rock stable and fast - upto 50Mb/S over a 1 GIG ethernet link )

I notice after its copied around 750 the status box freezes and it seems its not coping any more... its via 1 gb network link , both machines are fairly quick and i'm logged into the machine i am copying from using terminal services

specs of 2 pcs -

pc where files are copied from - Quad 2.4 , 4Gb Ram , 2.4Tb in Raid 5 , Win7 X 64

pc where the files are copied to - dual core 2.26 , 4Gb Ram , 500Gb WD Hdd , Win7 X64

I beleive its not hardware as i've copied like over 10 gigs of 350 mb files with out issue , only multiple single files > 1gb seem to have issues.

Both PCS are running RTM. 16385

As a suggestion, test what happens when you fully uninstall (disabling is not enough) your anti-virus utility and 3rd-party firewalls, if any.

The most likely cause is interference from a kernel-mode filter driver.

I don't have the BSOD info yet, and from what I can tell it varies anyway. The first error I received was 0x8007045d but after a clean install of Windows 10 I instead got a BSOD talking about IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

When I get home I want to try testing this specific USB 3.0 port that is on the front case of the Thermaltake Core V1 that I own. I used the left port and I get this issue, the right one didn't seem to cause it. However to make it more confusing I tried a USB 3.0 Flash Drive on the left port and copied the same exact file to it fine. I am unsure how to proceed.

Can someone tell me what I can do to verify the USB 3.0 port is functioning properly? I ordered one of these online but until it arrives would like some ideas.

When copying large batches of files, say 18,000 files, Windows stops copying after 5 files and has a problem with one file. It waits for user input to skip the file before it goes on. So you can't leave the batch copy running unattended. It would make more sense to copy all the good files and then list the problems at the end.

A:improve copying large batches of files

I can see where you are coming from but I think you need to look into a little built in feature called robocopy

I have a Maxtor external HDD and a Seagate FreeAgent external HDD and when I attempt to copy large files or videos to these drives I get an error message that tells me Windows XP Home failed to copy all of the files and suggests it is a network or driver problem - then usually my PC freezes up and I have to do a power shutdown and reboot. The file I attempted to copy is incomplete.

I have Win XP Home on a Compaq pc with 960 MB of RAM.

Seagate tells me it is a Windows problem - could it be a USB driver problem? if so how do I troubleshoot it?

Many thanks for any input.

Mary

A:PC freezes when copying large files to external HDD

Because AntiVirus is probably scanning the files
And Windows is using lots of memory
And the USB HardDrive may be fragmented or even in need of a check Disk
It's hard to tell.

You could try in Safe Mode (F8 Repeatively during system startup)
Then go to My Computer and try again
If it fails in Safe Mode, it's probably:
Faulty Ram: run Memtest for 7 Passes
Faulty HardDrive run CheckDisk on the drive (right click-Properties-Tools)
Or it can be Pagefile set too low (Right click My Computer-Properties-Advanced...)

I'd also recommend CCleaner (in Normal mode again) and Defrag both drives

Hello Everyone,

First post here. I assembled a new pc back in September and decided to go with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I do my best to research problems before asking for help but this one has totally got me. I installed the free version of Macrium for imaging and I noticed early on that it could not successfully verify the images that I created. Everything else seemed to be working normally so I set the issue aside thinking it was just a software quirk. The system has experienced some bsod's but the vast majority of these went away after updating the driver for the onboard graphics.

I finally got around to reading the Macrium documentation about how the verification works and how to confirm the results and now I'm concerned about data integrity on this machine. Copying large files from the cmd line with the /v option throws an error, copying at the cmd line and running FC /B to compare the files yields inconsistent results, a comparison of the same two files will pass FC one time and fail the next. Memory passes the Windows memory test, I'm going to run memtest86 overnight to see if it finds anything. I have read where there are some Win 7 64 issues copying large files to external usb drives but my drives are internal sata drives.

The system includes the following, nothing has ever been overclocked. The only tweaks were ssd optimizations such as turning off restore. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated, i'm just about ready to sta... Read more

A:Issues when creating or copying large files in Win 7 Pro x64

Hello cway and welcome to Seven Forums.

Apparently the copying of large files has been an ongoing problem. A quick Google search showed numerous issues ranging from slowdowns to complete freezes. Two possible solutions involve TCP auto-tuning or using a third party tool like TeraCopy.

Problem copying large files

I'm not sure how, or if, this relates to Macrium.

System is a 3 yr old Gateway. P4 1.8 Ghz 256M, 80G Western Digital HDD (NTFS) running win2k pro

System was working flawlessy until last summer when the HDD croaked. Replaced with nearly identical Western Digital 80G unit. Re-installed OS and SP4 and put things back from backups.

Since then, if I try to copy a file bigger than 70Mbytes from the HDD to my CD-RW, my system hangs. Sometimes I can Ctl-Atl-Del and restart cleanly, other times I have to hit the power to get it back.

Saw the "delayed write error" message once but all the other times, the system just freezes.

Ran a memory test today with no errors.

Application can create large files with no issues.

Hi, there...
I have several network drives connected to my system. One of them has 8 dynamic drives (8TB) connected to each other as one whole.
When I copy to the above mentioned drive (or rather drag and drop) a folder with the very large files inside (total size is between 1.5 or 2 to 4.5 GB) my system crashes.
Attached is a zipped file with Minidump files.

There is an image file as well that I took using my cell after I followed the instruction to change the registry a bit. Overall --> It didn't work (Although I WAS able to copy 5-6 files before the crash, but at the same time I saw the difference how the system was slower than usually)...

The interesting thing is that the crashes don't happen all the time. I can transfer several files, one at the time without any problem at all. But after copying like 4-5 or 6 the system crashes...

I have been analyzing the Mini Dump files for quite a while already but without obvious success...

I hope somebody would be kind enough to discuss the problem with me...
Please, feel free to post any questions you may want to ask me...

P.S. System: Microsoft Windows XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Hewlett-Packard
Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
2.86 GB of RAM
(Well, there are actually 4 sticks of Memory, each 1GB --> So, totally 4GB of RAM)

A:PC crashes when copying large files to external HDD

States it is a memory issue, which I don't doubt with 4 Gig of Ram on Xp
Also at one stage System Restore was running when you were copying the files, it just fell over in a clump.

I'd suggest you remove 2 of the 1 Gigs of Ram
Adjust your pagefile to say ~ approx 2000 Min and max (even that's a lot)
(This is done in System control panel applet- then Advanced- top Settings-Advanced-Change)

Also probably a good idea to either turn off System Restore (your choice) or at least remove the old (or recently) created restore points:
Clear system restore points

Clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
Select the More options tab
Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

If all else fails, try Memtest (for 7 Passes)

I have 3 HD's running. Two (NTFS) internal and one (FAT32) external.

A 300GB (NTFS) with about 14GB of free space.
A 60GB (NTFS) with 9GB of free space.
A 160GB (FAT32) with 149GB of free space.

I am getting this error message while trying to transfer a 4GB Movie from the 300GB HD to the 160GB HD saying "Error copying file or folder, There is not enough free disk space". Obviously there is enough disk space on the target drive for the movie but for some reason or another it doesn't think so. Windows also recognizes that there is the correct amount of space available, it only says there isn't when I try to transfer.

I tested transferring with other files and it works fine, its just that file. I also tried transferring it to the 60GB HD and it worked without any problems.

My questions are:

Is there something wrong with the file?

Is it that there isn't enough room in a temporary folder for it to transfer a file that big?

Is it the fact that they are different file systems?

Is there something wrong with my HD?

Or is it something that i'm not thinking of?

Thanks for your help. Sorry if this post is in the wrong section, I thought it was the most appropriate.

A:XP "Error copying file or folder" message

Thankfully you didn't try "moving" it, sometimes from doing this it vanishes from the source (as wanted) and never gets to the destination (due to out of memory error)

I've seen this myself, it's to do with system resource on your PageFile amount of Ram being used and the CPU coming in trying to process it all.

In most cases I have run CCleaner first then copied the large file(s) across without fuss.
It's just all the temp files together and Windows thinking that memory is low when it's just the processing of this memory in a temporary location (being %temp% usually)

Hello Folks,

Feel somewhat foolish, however here goes. I'm an intermediate user. Just installed 0&0 Safe erase 3 tool from Sept 09 issue of PC Pro. I merely wish to securely delete my temporary internet file folder. Problem is, i can't get to folder if i search in search box, (in vista) however i can see the folder via tools/internet options/settings/view files in the folder list, but am afraid to move it just in case i mess up the place where the files go, in the normal running of Windows. All i want to do is put the folder in the 'add folder' box of safe erase 3 and delete the files manually, but cannot get to it. Hoping this makes some kind of sense, and some kind person can advise me how to complete this simple task.

Cheers,

I'm an a digital artist, and I keep all my work-in-progresses in one folder labeled 'Art' under My Pictures. The night before last I was working on an image on Photoshop, got tired, saved it into my Art folder and closed the program. The next day I boot up, messed around on the internet a while, then go to open the image and work on it some more...and it's not there. In fact, my entire Art folder is suddenly missing, as well as all the images under My Pictures that weren't filed into folders.

Baffled, I looked through my other folders to see if they got merged somehow, but they didn't.

Next, I went to my Recycling bin to see if they had accidently been deleted. I didn't see it in there, but I restored everything anyways, just in case. It still didn't show up.

I then tried to do a few file searches on my computer with the names I could remember. Only a couple of the names I tried showed up, but they were only Shortcuts. When I clicked the shortcuts it told me "The item 'Name.psd' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly. Do you want to delete this shortcut?"

Finally I went online and searched 'Missing folders'. I got information on how to unhide hidden files and followed the instructions, but still, no Art folder.
I then found a list of free programs that would help recover deleted or lost files from your harddrive. The first one I downloaded was Recuva... Read more

Hello,
I hope someone can help me. I have 2 internal-sata hard drives(320 gig. And 2tb.) and 1 external usb/2.0 hard drive (750 gig.). The pc is an old dell gx520 tower with a fresh install of win7 pro. No antivirus, network connection, or firewall enabled. Processor is a Pentium4 running 3 GHz with 1.5 gigs of ram.

This is the problem: If I do a search on the 2tb. Drive for all of the jpegs, I have a total of about 84000 pictures. When I select all of the pictures and right click-copy and try to paste to another hard drive the pc will lock up and won’t display a copy status window. Windows says it’s not responding.
Now, if I right click-copy a single folder which has anywhere, from a few files to several hundred gigs. of data in it, using the same 2tb. Drive, it will copy over to another drive just fine.

I have tried, changing the swap file from “windows managed” to, up to 20 gig. Thinking the search was maybe having to write to the swap file. This didn’t work. I also booted in to safe mode and tried to do the copy from the 2tb. To the 320gig. drive and still no difference. I have tried this with windows copy handler and teracopy. It all has something to do with the fact that I am doing a search for the files before copying them.

Thanks for you help.

I am having a problem when copying large files in Windows 7. (By 'large files' I mean my steamapps folder, which is around 30gb but it hangs pretty early on the bigger 1gb+ files.)

After about 30-60 seconds of copying large files from one drive to another the file copy hangs, and then eventually everything else hangs until it all grinds to a halt. Cancelling the file transfer does nothing except change the window to notify me that it's cancelling. The only way I can regain control of my computer is to restart it with the reset button on the case.

When I first installed Windows I had this problem when copying files over the network, upgrading my network drivers fixed that. This problem has only recently been affecting me, possibly a little over a week. Having said that though, it's not often I try to copy large files.

I like to think I have a decent knowledge of computers and what not, but this really has me stumped.

Things I have tried:

I have 4 hard disks in the machine, and I've tried various different combinations of which drive to copy from and which drive to copy to, just to see if that is the problem, so unless all 4 hard disks are broken, I don't think I can blame the drive.
I read somewhere that virus scanners and firewalls have the potential to interfere, and so I uninstalled Zone Alarm, yet the problem still occurs.
I've tried the SFC /SCANNOW thing but that doesn't seem to have helped.
I've tried to get new motherboard drivers from the ASUS site, which I've no... Read more

I had a similar problem when I went from Vista to Windows 7. File transfers would grind to a halt and freeze the system. In my case I only needed to bump up the NB "north bridge" voltage one notch and everything worked perfectly again. I have seen this work on more than a few systems over the last year and a half. Windows 7 seems to put more load on the memory controller and chipset for some reason.

Hi All,

Just found this forum, first time poster. I'm a programmer but don't know too much about hardware/screen dumps etc...To get to the point, I'm encountering the problem below:

Just bought a new cyberpowerpc from Fry's, installed a 3rd hard drive (Western Digital 3TB). Everything seems okay except when I try to copy any large files/folders to the new drive. I'm using a folder that is 11.3GB with 686 files. I can copy it from drive 1 to drive 2 no problem. When I copy it from drive 1 or drive 2 to the third drive (the 3TB one), it will start copying then sometime soon after, explorer will close itself down and the computer will end up rebooting itself. Sometimes there will be a BSOD and sometimes it will just reboot without the BSOD.

I have tried to attach the dmp files etc...using the recommendations of the forum. Any help would be very much appreciated. I'd like to use this new drive for backups (it's the reason I got a new pc, my old one crashed and I didn't have a good backup system).

Thank you for your time, please help if you are able.

EDIT: I've run chkdsk, scanf, sea tools etc..on all drives and they all appear to be okay if that helps...

A:BSOD Copying large folders to new WD 3TB internal drive

110 Views - any ideas out there? I'm clueless as to what the dmp files are telling me, but am happy to update drivers etc...just looking for some options. I can reproduce this consistently so will know right away if something fixes the problem. Just downloaded and ran the WD DataLifeguard diagnostics and the hard drive passed all tests.

Sometimes I see a message saying "Intel Rapid Storage Technology - Disk on port 0...removed" - could this be a bad driver or something? Also, the HD didn't come with a cable so I just bought the only one i could find at Best Buy - could that make a difference? Thanks!

I want to mirror all content, including installation of OS and software, from my internal 320GB harddrive onto a 1TB external drive. My thought was that Windows would use some files at all times, so I ran Kubuntu live and tried to drag and drop all content from c:\ to the new drive. This won.t work since there are errors coming up all the time (cannot create directory etc). So how do I do this? Any recommended backup tools?

The thing is that I bought a Dell XPS M1530 that is breaking into pieces within its first half year. I though I.d go for a sophisticated and expensive machine, what I got is a pile of junk that needs replacements and adjustments constantly. And Dell has "no responsibility for clients data" so I had to buy another external harddrive to do the mirroring myself.

Best regards
Ungua

A:Copying large amounts of files, mirroring 320GB?

Hi

what you want to use is norton ghost, or arcronis true image, these programs can create a snapshot of the disk, including boot sector (something you wont get with just copying the files over), restoring is just a case of running the program and then restoring the image.

This is new territory for me.

I am trying to save two ISO files (Win7 Pro 32bit + 64bit, ex Digital River) from my C: drive (laptop spinner) to a new USB2 thumb-drive. (Laptop does not have USB3).

The two ISOs are about 2.5gb each, which 70% filled the 8gb thumb drive.
I simply did not think about the size of the ISO files and the thumb-drive capacity.

Copying from the internal drive to the USB2 thumb drive took about 22 minutes.
Speed was ?4MB/s, via a mains-powered hub.
Not having a clue about "transfer" times/speeds, I am wondering if the 4mb/s is reasonable ?

AS a bargain hunter I bought a few "cheap" sticks, the red-all-plastic-ones. But just now I discovered they are all USB2. (Which is irrelevant on this laptop, but is a let-down for my USB3 rigs (comments?)
It now makes sense to load the ISOs onto separate DVDs, ready for use.
What type of DVD should I use to load the ISOs onto ?

An old thread-post USB Transfer rate ~~ suggests changing the BIOS USB speed to high-speed instead of full-speed. The thread is directed at USB3 ... just wondering if such a tweak is applicable to USB2 ? If so ... how would I do that. ?

Is there any point to using third-party file copier programs ?

Thanks

I get about 1 GB every 20 minutes through a USB 2.0 port; that's about .8 MB per second; average file size 260k. This is to a cheap USB 2.0 stick.

If I change to a cheap USB 3.0 stick through a USB 3.0 port, I get about 5 times as much speed---about 4 minutes per GB or 4 MB per second. Same average file size

Large files tend to copy faster than small files. You're copying very large files and getting 4 mbs onto a cheap USB drive similar to mine. I'm only getting .8 for small files.

I'd say you are doing OK considering your USB is 2.0 and cheap.

You should be able to get much better performance if you step up to USB 3.0.

I wouldn't expect much improvement with file-copy programs, but might experiment if I was doing this job constantly and saving time was critical.

I don't know anything about the BIOS tweaks, but you could experiment.

I'd think even a slowish USB drive would be preferable to DVD, reliability issues aside.

Here's the story. I got an external drive today for my laptop and I'm backing up a lot of files and stuff. But this one file(an ISO that's 5.59GBs large) is too large to copy to the external drive(I guess Windows don't like copying large files. Why? I don't know).

I tried zipping the file into a compressed folder but it only made the file a little large than 5.10GBs, which was still too large to copy. So then, I used WinRAR to "compress and email"(I didn't see a compression option without the emailing option so I just did it). After 4 full hours of compressing, it went to my email and all that so I just emailed myself. NOTHING was in there. So then, I looked in the destination folder where I put the compressed file and it wasn't there. Then, I searched for it and found it in a temp folder. So, I dragged it into another folder and it turned into a shortcut for the original file and the 5GBs that I lost during the compressing process didn't return(I deleted my temps and still, no 5GBs).

So, as a result, not only did I NOT get the file on my external drive but I also lost 5GBs on my laptop. What can I do?

My husband opened our outlook express 6 email client and one of his folder which contained numerous subfolders is missing. Everything else is still there...just one missing folder.

I checked the store folder and the dbx file is still there. I recreated the file in outlook express and now all the emails in the main folder have appeared, but no subfolders, eventhough they all have dbx files.

I tried renaming folders.dbx to folders.old to recreate the folders, but it took all the subfolders in any folder and moved them up in the cascade so they became main folders. This is not a feasible solution as we had things very organized in sub- and subsub folders. So, I used the back up folder I created before renaming the folder.dbx file to correct that, but it brought me back to the same place of having all the missing sub folders.

Please help! We really need those emails and have now learned our lesson about storing too much critical info in email. We will start an archive file once we solve this issue!

Help, I logged on to my computer this morning and the "normal" file folder icons are gone and replaced by the windows default icon. It is every one and in all sub directories as well. If you try to change an icon manually it won't accept the simple folder icon but will let you choose a different one. MS Word and Excel and other program icons are fine. It is just the windows folder icons that are all gone.

If you right click on the desk top and choose "new" and "folder" the folder icon is not the normal manila icon but the window icon that show up when you don't have an applicaiton installed. A white background with small computer in the middle.

Any idea how I get all the folder icons to return. I can't do each one idiviually as it too many and the default won't let me install.
