I need to restore my 2000 notebook computer back to original...

Q: I need to restore my 2000 notebook computer back to original...

My computer was hacked October 30 2015. i believe it happened when i opened an email to upgrade to windows 10. At that time my computer was turned into a server and a network manager took over. Whilst doing so this person had deleted my recovery partition. Its taken almost a year to figure this out due to the fact i do not know a **bleep** thing about computers. So here is my question: How do i get the recovery disk? I cant find it anywhere on HP website.

Hello Computer Experts

Tim Northen here, problem is when Tim tries to sign up with ClickBank Affiliate Program, at the bottom of online application, check the box indicating terms have been read. a red mark prohibits clicking the box.

Also, when checking opportunities with yahoo email at [email address removed], sometimes a message
saying not allow access to link, violate global email rules.

Please, just show Tim how to go back to original security settings?

Thanks

I have several avi and mp4, mov files which other people had converted from DVD. I am wondering if I can convert these files back into DVD format and restore the original quality then burn them to DVD. Has anyone been able to do this?

A:Can I convert an avi back into a DVD and restore original quality

Nope. You'll never be able to get those back to the original quality. But you should be able to get them on dvd at near or the same quality they are currently in.

Due to what I can only guess was,a virus attack,,I had to restore my computer back to factory state from the "System recovery" drive D.This meant of course, losing all my files and applications. However ,the process includes a file back-up feature ,which should be a good thing,,right?
I followed the restore procedure to the letter and apparently succeeded in backing up all my files,documents,etc,.,,62.5 gb to be exact,to an external drive.
Once my comp was restored back to factory and was operating normally,I followed the back up file restore procedure ,that being ,click on the Back-up.1 application.) the only visible item in the BACK-UP FOLDER on the External hard drive.)
The process started normally,,indicating that the files were being located, and proceeded to step 2 which then indicated "restore in progress".This is where it stays,,the progress bar does not move from 0%!!!!!I left it on over night so,,"please wait" is not a factor here!
To sum it all up..the "restore-files" is not functioning.I have even attempted the procedure from the control panel/back up and restore center only to be told that "there are no restore files on this computer",,this is odd,,since I copied the folder from the external drive to the comp hardrive.
So,,the files are there but they are invisible and un-accessable without some HP program..what now?I really do not want to lose the data,
please ,,someone solve this..law

Depending on what you have, use the Recovery partition, the Recovery disk(s) or the Windows XP CD.

Maybe I should caution to "begin" by first backing up any data you want to save.

Good day -

I'm fairly new to this site - hello to you - and would like to solicit your expertise. I am not computer savvy - not because I am incapable of understanding - but because while I was a working professional I relied on the talents of the corporate IT department for any computer related issues. Now that I am a stay-at-home mom and screenwriter I have finally - painfully - come to the conclusion that I must dedicate some serious time to understanding the functioning capabilities of my computer. Okay, I know, blah, blah, blah...

Here is the issue.

A while back I downloaded the XP Service Pack II (who knew you couldn't trust Microsoft) and it caused some type of corruption to my computer (not to mention those nasty spyware buggers). After 15 hours on the phone with Dell, Microsoft, and my cable guy, we were able to get my computer in working order. The Dell representative stated that the corruption would invariably raise it's ugly head time and again and that the only answer would be to wipe out the hard drive and install XP all over again.

That was the first incident. And since that download, and several system restores back to previous states later, a disc clean up, a system defrag, and continual scan by Ad-Aware and Norton Internet Security/Virus protection, I still have an extremely sluggish system that locks up constantly. I have "(not responding)" several times a day from any number of applications and every night at shut down a pop up wi... Read more

A:How Do I Restore Computer To Original State

First of all, installing SP2 on a system running XP is not what caused your problems. It is a CRITICAL UPDATE and absolutely necessary for your computer to have to prevent its being attacked by malware through exploits the service pacs patch, and for prevention of allowing miscreants using the weaknesses in your unpatched computer to infect others. It was more than likely installing it on an infected system that may have caused the problems you are experiencing if not the malware residing on the system itself.Backing up now, while necessary to preserve your data, can be problematic. You may just backup viruses, etc as part of the backup and restore it to the computer after it has been disinfected.By the way, unless $ is a significant problem, backing up on an external USB hard drive made just for that purpose (which can be set to do incremental backups automatically) is far better and more foolproof than backing up on cds. You can get such a drive for less than $100, depending on how large you need it to be including the Dantz Retrospect software to accomplish backing up intervals scheduled and set by you.Back to your problem:If you are even moderately computer literate the best thing to do would be to disinfect your system rather than reload it if the data you have on it is important and hasn't yet been backed up.I assume you have regularly updated your anti-virus program's virus definitions and run a recent scan? If not, do so immediately using safe mode to run the scan.Star... Read more

Hi,
I'm using a Sony Vaio Laptop, and was pre installed with windows 7 , I've been using since 2 years now. And suddenly my laptop wasn't starting up... It recommended me to use repair disk and repair . Since I have no repair disk or any backed up disks, I borrowed a windows 7 OS disk from a friend and installed the new Windows 7 professional. Now how can I get all the drivers and softwares which were originally installed? There were Vaio care and etc. How do I restore it to the original status. I'm unable to connect to Internet either (using home LAN ), it doesn't detect any. Please help.
Thank you.

A:How do I restore computer to the original status

Had you asked we would have helped you Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot however now you have the chance to get a much better install so don't blow it by using outdated methods or counterfeit Win7.

You should be following closely the steps in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. If you haven't then I'd start over to get it right.

Did Professional come with that PC? If not I would download the official installer for your licensed version to use to reinstall so you don't waste an expensive license that came with that PC which is yours to reinstall as often as you want. Make sure the Product Key on COA sticker is readable.

I have a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop with Windows XP Home Edition. We have malware and viruses and I want to restore the computer to the original settings. Hitting Control and F11 at startup does nothing so I assume it has to be a manual install.
I have 2 disks that they gave me with the computer. A disk that says "Application, Already Installed on your computer, for reinstalling Dell Media Direct 3.3 on Dell Vostro computers". The other disk is a DVD of drivers and utilities that are already on my computer. It's not explained very well on what to do. One thing says what to do to load the DVD, with tapping F12, to prepare my hard drive. Then it says to insert the installation DVD. Are they talking about the same DVD? Will this reinstall and reformat my computer. That is what I want to do. If someone can give me clearer directions, it'd be appreciated. When do I use the Application CD?

A:I need to restore computer to original settings, problems

Hi slippybippy

The Application DVD is what you need to use once you have formatted your hard drive. The DVD with drivers and utilities is the one you need when formatting or reinstating your computer. Make sure you have the mains switched on and switch your computer off. Insert the Drivers & Utilities DVD into your D drive and switch back on. It should load most things automatically, but you may have to click YES here and there using the Enter key.

Do bear in mind you can render your computer useless if you do not know what you are doing. Having said that, if you have the installation discs, you can get it up and running.

The tapping of F2 or F1 will most likely take you into the BIOS set up. You won't be able to use your mouse here but instead you need to use your arrow + F (function) keys. Not sure what your BIOS looks like but you need to know what you are doing. You need to first make sure that your D drive is the first letter. This will ensure that when you insert disc it will read this drive first and not load Windows as per usual.

Please read this first in case you are unsure what to do

I have recently gotten a huge amount of virus threats detected on my computer and the only way i can get rid of them is to do a complete system restore to its original factory state as to when i bought it. I have no recovery cds or dvds that came with the computer.
I have already tried doing a system restore to its earlier restore point to a week ago and also virus scan to try and fix or remove the detected files but has been no luck in getting rid of them.

I don't have a lot of experience with computers aside from using them to get on the internet.

I am looking to reset my computer to the original factory settings.

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium. And the computer is a Dell Inspirion 518/519

I've had this computer for about a year and a half and bought it from Dell but I believe there was only a one year warranty. And if my computer came with discs they are long gone. I've been told I will lose all information like stuff downloaded, videos music etc. all except what originally came with the computer. I don't mind that. I would really appreciate if someone can link me or knows what to do to get this accomplished.

I want to reset because my computer has caught some sort of virus, redirecting me to websites, not running properly at all. I've heard so many suggestions how to fix it that I'm on information overload. For someone like me with no experience I would just rather do a factory reset. thanks in advance, i'll be looking forward to any responses.

so, a few years back i read a magazine that said to change the type of computer in device manager to standard pc because it made the computer run a little better or faster.

so now i've got my laptop and i've noticed it getting slower and thought that i would do this... VERY BAD MOVE!!!

i can still boot windows and everything - it meant that i had to let the computer reinstall all of the drivers for my hardware - but i have noticed in the device manager now that there are two instances of 'standard pc', there is also a new section titled 'other devices' with about 15 devices that seem to have no driver for them - some mention 'ISA' so i am guessing that changing to standard pc means that windows thinks my laptop is now a desktop pc with ISA slots???

i find that when i put my laptop lid down the thing shuts down, when i press the power button it turns off straight away (doesn't even shut down!). i had had the laptop configured for ages to do nothing when i closed the lid and give me shut down options when i pressed the power button. i look in power options and i can only cinfigure the monitor screen and hard disk power off options - every other option is not available. when i do bring up the shut down options i can no longer choose standby.

i have also realised that i can not turn on my wireless connection - i've tried all sorts to get it to work with no avail! the laptop is an acer ferrari and when i call up the manager app... Read more

Help please. I have a small laptop computer which is hooked up to a router which is hooked up to cable modem. Operating system is Windows Vista and with Team Viewer.
I am in Ontario and it is in Florida with remote view camera's pvr attached also to router. In this storm my power had gone out and now is back on, however my computer is not powering on which I thought i told it to do before I left it (umm guess I goofed). Almost hurricane Debbie is causing me this problem.
How can I turn it on without being there. I am familiar with Bios but again cannot access it. Anyhelp please will be appreciated and thank you in advance. Without my computer being on the pvr support people cannot access my pvr and router.

A:Turn my computer back on from 2000 km away

You can't turn it on without being there.

Usually there is a BIOS setting about what to do after a power failure that includes restarting. But the program would need to be running as a service because if just a program, it would not be running after a restart.

Hi, My notebook is responding slowly to all tasks and automatically observing pop-ups. I would like to format my notebook without loosing original OS and data saved on disk. Could you please advise me in this regard at the earliest?

A:Formatting notebook without loosing original OS

Hello @Diliptolichukka? Welcome ! Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. There are 2 ways to go on now with your issue: 1. if these pop-ups are unwanted and seem like virus/malware issue (and probably the slow down is also related to this) - I can provide you advice on resolving this without formatting. There is no 100% guarantee for success but we can try if you want to. or 2. Format/Reimage as per your idea (initial wish).Every HP computer that comes with Windows preinstalled including your Pavilion has a recovery partition that can be used to restore your PC to factory default condition. Your PC can boot from it, run the recovery procedure and format the other. Eventually, restore your PC from initial image to factory condition the way it was when you first bought it. If you choose step 2, you can read about it here: Product manual >> http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03939658 - page 105 or this article >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04758961 Make sure you copy/back up your most important files one external drive before the procedure starts. Hope this works for you. Let me know which option you choose... and if you choose (2), do not hesitate to post again if you face difficulties.

Hi. I bought a new computer (the specs should be below) and I let someone from McAfee control the computer to solve the problem of photos disappearing when rotated in Windows. Unfortunately he seems to have done something to my system and my photo software (DxO Elite) hasn't worked properly since (it worked like a dream before). I got a different guy at McAfee and he just uninstalled Explorer 9 (that was the real hangup) and the pics rotated. But my computer is still wacky.

I did a debugging report for DxO help and they told me Windows is acting strangely all the time and just loses connection with DxO. He suggested I take the new machine back but I don't know if that's possible.

I only have about 6 restore points in my D (recovery drive) so I can't go back to before the guy monkeyed around on it. I have a repair disc and a set of 3 recovery discs.

But backing up the files has failed twice on external drives (2 of them) that had adequate space. It took 16 hours each time to tell me there wasn't sufficient space? But on the other hand, I have an external drive that I was using to back up.

But if I go back to original factory settings and use the backup feature on that disc, will I import the same registry errors?

Is there a less drastic solution? I'm a computer novice and can follow instructions exactly... that's about it...

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I decided to dual-boot windows and linux over winter break, succeeded, got bored of linux, broke linux and then decided to get rid of linux (just kinda wanted to prove to myself that I could set up a dual-boot). So, being the stupid kid I am, I didn't think ahead and just erased the extended partition I put linux on. Now, whenever I boot it gives me "Grub error 22" which means it can't find the linux drives/partitions. I've read up on this, and found an easy fix which involves an XP install disk going into the recovery console and typing "FDISK /MBR" or "fixmbr" or "fixboot" BUT I dont have a windows install disk because HP is the best computer manufacturer EVAR (they only give you the option to do a "recover the computer to the original state it was in when you bought it" which is ridiculous cause I'd have to erase everything I have saved). Anyone have a way of doing this without the install disk?

A:Need help getting the original windows MBR back

I have the recovery console on the boot menu, and it's never asked me for a boot disk. - of course, thinking about it logically for a moment, that wouldn't help you anyway.

It sounds like you have the option of borrowing somebodies XP disk, or waiting here where no doubt someone will have an idea. I'm going to see if I can find something.

Ok - to start with, try using an XP NTLDR boot disk (readme1st) download from http://1gighost.net/jerseyboy/xpquick.zip and unzip to an XP formatted floppy disk. Boot the computer from this, and provided your windows partion is C: you should be able to get into your windows at the very least.

edit - I'm just downloading something which claims to be a bootable recovery console CD. I'm checking to see if it works atm - if it does I'll post the link.

edit 2 You could try downloading this zipped ISO, unzip it and use the ISO to create a win xp setup disk. Try the recovery console on that, and see if fixboot and fixmbr works... http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/tools/bootdiscs/xp_rec_con.zip

I was able to finally get rid of norton all except the recycle bin. this is on an old(2001) toshiba laptop. my wife uses it for sewing now and wants the recycle bin to work like our pc. I got rid of all the norton features for the bin but can't get the windows xp style recycle bin back. a friend says the xp files are preloaded on laptops not on disks. is this correct? will I lose everything if I reload xp,assuming I can find it? I would also like to remove my son's name from owner/administrator as he has been deceased for 7 years. any ideas appreciated. Bill

A:How do I get the original recycle bin back?

Bill,

Try right-clicking your desktop and selecting "properties." On the window that comes up, select the "desktop" tab, then click "customize desktop." On the next window, select "recycle bin (full)" and click "restore default," then repeat with "recycle bin (empty)."

For the User problem:

Click on "Start", "Control Panel". Then click on "User Accounts". From there, you should be able to change Admin Settings. You might have to log in as your son before if it gives you messages about not having permission.

A:i need the original windows 2000 cd to put on

I'm not sure what experience you have regarding Windows installations, but here's a brief rundown:1) Back up all your info (CD, USB, etc)2) If you don't already have one, get a copy of Windows 2000 on eBay windows 2000 | eBay3) Insert the disc into your CD drive and reboot the computer. If your computer is new enough (1998 and later) it should be able to boot right off the CD.If this sounds complicated you should use this step-by-step tutorial. I used the search function and found a lot about changing icons of folders. I could not find anything about how to get back the original icons.
For some reason one external drive "lost" it's icon and you can see a placeholder only.

Any ideas?
Thanks a lot

You might try rebuilding the icon cache. C:\Users\username\AppData\Local. Delete IconCache.db. Reboot. This will cause the icon cache to be rebuilt.

Hello Himmcr, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You could do a system restore using a restore point dated before you made this change to undo it and hopefully restore the icons back to default.

When I installed the release candidate I immediately did a True Image backup of the installation. Boy, am I glad I did.

I began to add programs and printers and when I added my HP Photosmart 2575 and then its Vista drivers. I then made another backup of the what I had added to that point. I now get a 9F stop on shutting down after I have done something with the printer as simple as printing a page.

I restored to the original installation and added the Photosmart using only the RC's driver. All is well under that setup and would like to go back to the second backup and uninstall the Vista drivers and use the RC's drivers but can't find any way to roll back the driver to RC one. If I try 'New Driver', the system seems only to find the Vista driver.

How can I delete the Vista driver from my system so that I have only the RC drivers?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you.

A:Going Back to Original Printer Driver

So let me see if I have this right . .

You want to revert to your second back-up, and remove the Vista drivers from your system and use only the RC1 drivers?

If so, this should be easy enough . .

Goto your Device Manager and navigate to your printer . .
Right Click on your printer and select Uninstall
When the window pops up to confirm, check the box that says Remove driver software from my computer.
Restart your computer, and Windows 7 should install it's own drivers

Hope this helps

Scott

P.s. Have you tried the Rollback Driver option ?

So a little over a year ago I decided I wanted to customize my interface to look like Windows 9x just for fun and kept it that way up until today. So of course during the modification process, I changed a lot of the icons in imageres to the 9x icons. I did this using resource hacker. Now that I'm back to using Aero interface, I'm wondering if there's any way possible I can restore all the icons to the original Windows 7 ones all at once whether it's through a download or a certain program or anything, or would I have to manually replace them through resource hacker again?

I want to restore the original XP Professional startup screen, with each user id displayed with an icon beside it. I'm getting a sign-on screen that looks more like Windows 2000 (two text boxes displayed (username and password) in a dialog box.

I know this screen appears instead of the original if I have something set to logon to a Windows domain. I must have changed something a while back. But I don't know what and I'm sure I don't need whatever service I have running that changed my startup screen.

I hope this makes sense. Appreciate any help!

After the Anniversary update Windows 10 Start menu looks cluttered. I like things to the minimal. Is there a way to revert back to the previous windows 10 menu?

A:Get back the original windows 10 start menu

Hi, many people have asked exactly the same question and complained about the new menu.
No, this is by MS design.
Options:
1. Revert to the previous build and stay with it. (bad idea for most)
2. Complain to MS and wait a long long time
3. Change to Linux
4. Get a 3rd party start menu

I like 4. There are far far better ones out there. As I have an extensive start menu with folders and subfolders which Win 10's start menu has never handled, I use Classic Shell. Highly configurable, free, can launch apps too, good built-in search. Free..

On two of our user accounts the screens have gone back to a Dell default screen (custom background is gone) and half of the desktop icons are gone. Extremely slow. Everything is still there when I go to Windows Explorer and look for it. Started getting message that I have less than 15% hard drive space left and when I look it is less than 5%. Computer is making funny noises like the fan or cabinet is loose. Also get things like "welcome to Dell setup screen" but unit is 3 years old so it has somehow gone backwards on 2 of the logins.
My question is does this sound like a virus or a hard drive crashing?

hi,

to keep it as short as possible, i simply want to revert back to the original WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER that came with XP. i loved using it and was overjoyed when i became aware of WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER 2--that is until i downloaded it and it got quirky on me (unlike the original version). now i'm very sorry i "upgraded".

problem is, when i attempt to uninstall MM2, i can't find it in the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in the CONTROL PANEL. i did a SEARCH, but i'm afraid of removing it that way for fear i may screw up something else. even if i were able to successfully uninstall MM2, where would i find MM1 to reinstall?

i don't have the original WINDOWS XP cd, as it didn't come with my pc--only a recovery disk. i can't do a RESTORE, for reasons i won't burden you with.

i'd really love to have the original WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER back, but not at the cost of corrupting anything else, as i have enough (unrelated) problems with my pc right now. if there is a way to uninstall MM2 and reinstall MM1 would you please explain how it can be done?

of course i'd appreciate any help you may give me regarding this matter, but if you can't, i thank you just the same as you've been so generously helpful to me in the past.

A:Deleted Original Windows Fonts how to get them back?

You could try a repair install, that might replace the fonts, but I'm not sure.

You also might be able to find the fonts in question on your install dvd. It would be located within the x86/x64 directory and then under the fonts directory. If you can't find it, search for it via the search command.

Hello,

I am currently trying to fix an Acer laptop for a friend of mine and from what I can tell it looks as if her laptop continues to reset itself back to its original settings. For example, the desktop background goes back to the slandered picture, desktop icons that were once there are gone and programs have to be reinstalled. Neither of us have an exact cause for this issue, except she did mention how she had a router problem within the last week, but I wouldn't see how that would constantly be affecting the laptop itself when the router has been fixed. Every day the computer resets itself and its becoming a frustrating task for her and she's just about given up on it.

Is there, perhaps, a control I could change? Could it be a possible virus or malware issue?

Please help, I'm becoming a little desperate for help myself.

Thank you,
Ashley

Please tell us what operating system you are using.

It looks like either the shortcuts were broken, in which case we need only make new shortcuts, or the actual files for those programs were deleted. To find out..

Hello, first post here.

I signed up on this forum to post a thread about this problem I'm currently having.
Explains why my profile is quite empty and that I won't be posting alot.
Well... I'd probably need help in future anyways, so I'll come here when I need help.

Ok, so I got a brand new Netbook, and decided to install Windows 7 on it, even though it was designed for Windows XP, the specs were suitable enough for Win 7.

As I'm a freak when it comes to themes and appearance, I went ahead and successfully installed new themes.
I then launched Windows 7 Start Button Changer V2.6 that was included with the theme and changed the default 7 orb to a custom one.

Now, here's the problem.
While I was doing all the Visual Style business, I accidentally deleted a folder that contained Windows 7 Start Button Changer! And I was using a custom orb!
So, with the program and its custom .bmp's gone, the next time I reboot - everything should be restored to default, because the whole thing is gone of course.

Anyways, I was actually going to change the custom orb later because it didn't look cool.

I rebooted, and I was wrong. The stupid custom orb was still there, so I guess the W7SBC made a permanent change to explorer.exe

I downloaded a new Windows 7 Start Button Changer v2.6 and clicked the button 'restore'.
It did the trick for about a couple of seconds but then it reverted to the custom orb again, like the deleted process was still running.

I downloaded the latest version of ano... Read more

Hello all -

Long story short: My Dad's computer (an HP 2000 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium) began acting up after a power outage a few weeks ago; it reverted to "User must login at Startup" mode and would not recognize his password, so he was effectively locked out of his own computer. (Trying to talk him through possible repairs by phone was a hell I cannot begin to describe. He still has trouble remembering what "desktop" or "icons" mean.)

I'm visiting my folks in person now, so with actual physical access to the computer I am able to try fixing the problem myself. As this was one of those "Windows is installed and licensed, but we won't include a system CD in the package" bargain deals, I was forced to use a hack I found online (on my phone, in case you're wondering) to reset his password and actually get to the desktop, which included accessing the command line from a Notepad link and using this trick:

"Lastly, select File - > Open - > Files of Type "All Files" - > Local Disk - > Windows - > System 32. We are almost done, once you have your system 32 folder open scroll down until you find the file "sethc" and rename it to anything, now scroll up until you find the application "cmd" and copy it, paste it and rename it to sethc. We are now done, what this has done is replaced the sticky keys function with a administrator privileged command prompt, in other words when you are at your log in screen press shift 5 times rapidly and a c... So, instead of copying and pasting you skipped right to the rename? You should be able to make a copy of SETHC and rename it to CMD. You may need to create an Administrative account to accomplish this.

Hello, I recently had my Sony Vaio laptop cleaned and reformatted with Microsoft Vista Home Premium (bought from Best Buy to get rid of all the bloatware included with the Sony systems).

Yesterday I downloaded a bunch of drivers that I didn't need when trying to solve a small bug with the volume control. I figured out which driver I needed, but now I have all these other downloads that I don't want.

Is there some way to restore the system back to what it originally was after the clean and reformat? So that I can get rid of everything and then just install the drivers that I know I need?

Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated!

A:Can I restore system to original?

Hiya have you tried doing a system restore, there should be a restore point for when you had the fresh install.

To access system restore, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore and follow the simple on screen instructions.

I wrongly replaced taskmgr with process explorer .
How could I restore original taskmgr ?

A:How could I restore original taskmgr ?

Hi,
I would like to suggest you try the following:
1.You may download the ?ProcessExplorer.zip? file.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653
2. Extract the ?procexp.exe? file to ?C:\Windows? folder.
3. Double click the ?procexp.exe? file to launch process explorer. Now click on ?Options>Replace Task Manager?
Click ?Yes? when prompted with the UAC warning.
4. Now whenever you right click the task bar to launch the task manager or press ?Ctrl? + ?Shift? + ?Esc? to launch the task manager,

you?ll be greeted with process explorer instead.
If you want to revert back to using default task manager, repeat step 3.
Thanks!

I'm helping a friend with her XP problem and now I need some help. It looks like we need to start over and get everything back to factory. I'm a semi-wiz with 98se, but a semi-idiot with XP.

She bought a new HP with XP and I couldn't believe how much free trial junk came with it. Over time, she has activated most of it and tried to get rid of it. She has also been on several sites known for bad behavior (pogo, lycos...) and has accidently blocked some vital programs and none of the anti spyware programs will update. Aside from SpybotSD, AdAware, SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard, there is no additional software installed, but 12 gigs of space has already been used. All anti-spy programs report no problems and her NAV says it hasn't been accessed in over a year, but the scan and updates show current activity with no alerts.

Here are the questions.
What steps should we take now?
Is there a 'rule of thumb' for the anti-spyware installation order?
Can XP be reinstalled WITHOUT all of the optional trial junk (and how)?
In this condition, is there any point in doing a backup before we restore?
What should we NOT try to do?

Thanks a ton!

A:Should we restore XP to its original condition

I suggest you run these 2 online scans:http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/http://housecall.trendmicro.com/Then I would post a HijackThis log to be examined. That would eliminate the possibility of spyware/malware, being the cause of your problems.Read the pinned post in the HijackThis forum, here Please read, and follow, all directions carefully. Then, run a log, and post it in the HJT forum, at this link. Do not, fix anything, yet.A member, of the HJT Team, will help you out.It may take a couple of days to get a response, because the HJT Team are very busy. Please, be patient, these people are volunteers. They will help you out, as soon as possible.NOTE:Once you have made the post, please, DO NOT make another post in the HJT forum, until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. The first thing they look for, when looking for logs to reply to, is 0 replies. If you make another post, there will be 1 reply. The team member, glancing over the replies, might assume someone is already helping you out, and will not respond. So, just make your post, and let it sit there, until a team member responds. This way you will be taken care of, in the most timely manner.

I have an Aspire v5 that originally had Windows 8 and I upgraded to Windows 10. Now I can't add a new user, admin or standard, as I get an error "the user service service failed at sign in". During a chat with Microsoft they said, after trying a few things, that I needed to restore to 8 and upgrade again. However the Acer Recovery apparently isn't compatible with Windows 10 and doesn't run So, I am hoping someone can tell me how to do a restore via the command line in safe mode... I know how to get there I just don't know that to run. Thanks for your time!!

A:How to Restore Aspire v5 to original OS or Win 8

Hi, If you upgraded less than 30 days ago you should have the option to go back to windows 8. Go in settings ---> Update and Security ---> Recovery. Here you should have an option to Go back to windows 8.However it will not work if you upgraded more than one month ago.

While trying to restore all the original files using SFC,i just encountered this error: SFC /scannow Found but could not fix some Corrupt files. Im trying to restore all my default files from theme modifications. I restored already all the back up files that was used by the theme patcher all the .dll's and .cpl etc. Then i run SFC just to make sure everything was restored, then that error occurs.

A:SFC could not fix while trying to restore all original files.

You can either run sfc a couple more times and if that doesnt help, a repair install. But a repair install is recommended only if there are functional problems.

I've been running Day-Timer 2000 Address Book since it came out more than 10 years ago. It's an excellent program, especially for categorizing addresses and printing them out in lots of different address book formats. Unfortunately, when shipping the original disk to a friend, it was stolen in the mail. I didn't make a copy since I thought I could always copy the files from my PC and backup drive onto a replacement computer.

Well . . . not! Seems you need the original disk or an exact copy. I've looked everywhere, including of course eBay. Nothing to be found. The original 2003 thread on this topic has been closed.

Any ideas? Also, anyone find another similar program which performs as well?

I have a B&W drawing that I have had scanned in for me by my boyfriend at work. He emailed me the drawing as a JPEG and it was really good quality except the lines were grey instead of black. I opened the image up in Microsoft Picture Manager and made the lines black, hit save..."File is open in another program". Errm...No it isn't. I double checked, nothing has it open so I hit try again. It thought about it for a while and saved but the image went blank...I tried upping the brightness, nothing. It's just a white blank now. Luckily I had backups but nothing is working! I tried opening it up in photoshop and changing the lines, it just saves it and the lines go grey again. I've tried exporting it, exporting as a different format, save as, save all...everything.

What is wrong with this picture and why won't it save or allow me to edit it???

I've tested some other photos and they edit perfectly fine in both programs so it's just this drawing. We have also tried putting the drawing onto a different laptop and another computer and it still won't let us edit it. What is going on???

Does anybody have any ideas?? It's really bugging me and this drawing is really important as it's part of my university assignment.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Anna xxx

Is this a windows problem or motherboard problem

If machine is crashing and rebooting during memtest (which is loading at boot) then this has to be a hardware error as windows will not be present during memtest

I'm sure that there is a real simple solution to this problem, and I'll probably kick myself once someone replys with the answer here, but I just can't think of how to do this.

When I double click on "My Computer" off the desktop, the window that pops up displays the contents, grouped by type and contents. See attached file for picture. The problem that I'm having, is that there was another file on there listed with "User's Documents, Mark's Documents and Shared Documents", called "Grandma's Documents". While I was playing around, I accidently moved that file, and can't seem to get it back to where I got it from. The file "Grandma's Documents" is still on the computer and I can access it if I go into the "Documents and Settings" file and choose the appropriate path, but I can't seem to move it, or copy it out of there. Not having it there doesn't really effect me that much, but when my Mother uses the computer, she has to click a thousand different things before she can get to her files.

I was going to just use the system restore function, but funnily enough, had forgotten to turn that function back on after getting rid of the my doom virus the other day.

Any suggestions???

Vio.

ps. I'm running WINXP here if that helps.

Please help me out withe User Image and Registry Deletion

A:How do i get my Login User Image back to its original size on Startup?

Hello noah and welcome to Seven Forums.

Don't know if this will help or not but I think I'd uninstall YouCam 5, at least temporarily. Then I'd change the log on picture using this:

User Account Picture - Change

If the picture needs to be resized, you can do that in Paint (link on right side):

Using Paint

Once everything is saved and working correctly, I'd make a new restore point or even better, a system image just in case the restore point gets deleted by YouCam 5. If this doesn't fix things you might want to contact CyberLink (parent company of YouCam 5) and see if they have any suggestions. The "contact us" link is at the bottom of their web page.

How can I access Dell PC Restore by Symantec on my Dell Dimension 9100? I've tried turning off my computer, turning it back on and waiting till the dell splash screen reappears during startup process (pressing Ctrl and F11) as dell support instructed, to no avail. Any suggestions?

A:Solved: Restore PC to original settings

Did you use ctrl+F11 repeatedly during the Dell splash screen, sometimes once does not do it. Remember you will lose all data by using this restore feature, everything will be lost, so back up your data.

If XP was ever reinstalled or repaired using the XP CD on that 9100, then the restore feature was broken by doing so. It can be repaired but is not for the inexperienced. Read very carefully.

will doing an indexing restore with vista to its original settings give me more disk c local- give it more space thats now low on space

A:restore indexing to its original settings

Indexing isn't mandatory. Try Everything Search:
www.voidtools.com • View topic - New version 1.2.1.452a?

The above link is the only listing I found for the latest version released. Don't know why it is, but it works better than the ones on the Everything Search home page.

Everything Search is very small and efficient. It keeps the db in memory and writes it out when the program quits.

Also it may be a good idea to get an external drive to park data. Running with a system drive over 50% full really bogs it down and slows defragging to the point you won't want to do it.

I try to keep my main drive usage below 40%. Typically it's 30% or less used when I defrag.
