Dell xps 8700 does not go to sleep

Q: Dell xps 8700 does not go to sleep

I have varied the screen saver settings and find that the screen saver does not always come on, and if it does, it rarely ever triggers the computer to go into sleep mode as I desire it to. It has gotten worse with the new windows 10 anniversary update.

Appreciate thoughts

I have an XPS 8700 desktop all stock bought a little over a year ago. Last night I turned it off when I went to bed. Today I turned it on and it will not go past the first dell loading screen. It freezes and I'm unable to press any buttons (F2, F12 etc) I put it a different hard drive to see if that was the problem but it still continued. HELP PLEASE??

A:Dell XPS 8700 Desktop, Freezes at dell loading screen unable to boot up.

Hi Mattmazz
Thanks for writing to us.
Please disconnect all the connectors and then hold down the power button for 15 secs, now remove the memory modules and put them back one by one and observe for any changes.
If possible please try another set of memory modules. If there is a separate graphics card, remove that as well and try the onboard.

EDIT: Rewritten for clarity
On Realtek ALC3861 Audio Driver (ver. 6.0.1.7525, A00) for Windows 10, there is no longer a button labeled "Show Meters" under Speakers/Headphones > Maxx Audio Pro in the bottom right corner (please see attached screenshot). This button in previous versions of the driver for Windows 7 opened a new window with sliders to balance front and back speakers in a surround sound setup.
What I did:
Updated my OS from 7 to 10 and updated the Realtek audio drivers accordingly - to the above mentioned version.
What I expected:
The "Show Meters" button would be present in the newest Realtek driver.
What really happened:
Upon upgrade to the newest driver, the "Show Meters" button disappeared.

I have reinstalled the newest driver multiple times with no avail and tried the driver from Windows 8.1 and the default driver from Realtek with worse affects (Dell Audio window is missing most elements/drop down options, etc)

If anyone would know how to address the issue, if this is intentional, or who to escalate this to, I would appreciate it.

A:Latest Version of Dell Audio is missing "Show Meters" button. (Windows 10, Dell XPS 8700)

I feel that I should be more observant. In Control Panel > Sound > Playback > Select the Realtek device > Properties > Levels there are the exact changes I need. I don't know why I didn't notice until now. Could explain why there was no "Show Meters" button in this release but I thought Windows 7 also had the same leveling and there was the leveling in Dell Audio as well.
I'm still going with a new sound card from Creative however, seen a super nice $70 one that looks awesome and seems to have features to match.

I'm considering installing an SSD on my desktop computer, and have read several places I need to set my BIOS to AHCI mode. I have no such mode listed in my BIOS. The only 2 options listed are LEGACY and UEFI. Is Legacy just Dell's description for AHCI? Can I just install using LEGACY? I can't seem to get any answers from the Dell forums. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit OS. I think the bios version is 8. If I use the LEGACY mode, will Trim still work? This will be a clone, not a fresh Windows install.
Thanks.

What are the possible cpu coolers that you can install on the mobo dell xps 8700 motherboard without any fancy ghetto mounting. Just as if it was a normal motherboard?

A:CPU COOLER DELL XPS 8700

The XPS 8500, the precursor to the XPS 8700, has standard Socket 1155 spacing. Socket 1150 shares the spacing of the 1155, and thus I believe an aftermarket cooler should work.
A Cooler Master Vortex was a perfect fit on my XPS 8500 motherboard, and I assume the same would hold true for an XPS 8700. You will use optical drive-type screws to fasten the cooler to the board rather than the flimsy plastic push-pins.
Looking at an XPS 8700 mainboard on eBay, I can see a standard four-pin CPU fan header, just like that of the XPS 8500.

Hi everyone, I am newbie here. Recently I need to upgrade my ram on XPS8700. And I went to Best Buy and bought a "PNY - 2-Pack 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3 DIMM Unbuffered Non-ECC Desktop Memory Kit". It does not work, computer can not power on with flashing orange lights.
So I went to Crucial website, it recommends me to use a DDR3L RAM. I saw all the DDR3Ls are for laptops. Could it be used in my desktop? And my current RAM is Hyundai. Could it be mixed with other brand like Crucial or Kingston?
My pc specs:

GTX 645
8GB RAM
Dell Inc. 0KWVT8 mobo
1TB HHD

A:Dell XPS 8700 RAM upgrade

Laptops first started using DDR3L which is why the market is flooded with it, however you just need to look for the desktop version for your computer.  If you go to crucial they should have an auto test that will detect the correct ram for your machine and give you the list of options you can pick from.

Good day everyone!
This is my first post to the forums, as I am a recent Dell convert - Dell monitors, a tower and speakers all make up my new workstation! One thing I wanted to do to improve performance from the get go was to use a solid state drive as a boot drive as well as some storage for some intensive games (like Flight Simulator) and for work. This is the drive I chose:
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-EVO-2-5-Inch-MZ-75E500B/dp/B00OBRE5UE/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1473820312&sr=1-1&keywords=samsung+850+evo+500gb

I did not, however, do as the installation had recommended by connecting it to the USB port with a SATA to USB converter because I had forgotten to buy one, and decided to forego that step and just install it straight in the case, using one of the spare hookups for power for the HDDs and plugging in the SATA cable to the motherboard. The SATA cable I had no issue with, but the cord for the power supply may not be fully plugged in (I heard a click, but the cord is a little short).
I went to go clone the drive with the included Samsung Magician/Data Migration tool and all went well, it only took about 4 minutes to clone the OS (nothing else is installed yet basically). I was hoping that the changes would have turned the SSD into a hard drive/boot drive, but when I turned it back on, the OS was still booting from the old C: drive.
I went inside device manager and the SSD shows, but it's not being recogniz... Read more

My suggestion. shutdown, unplug both power and SATA from your old HDD reboot and see if it works.
Assuming it does, we can sort out next steps to get your HDD setup as a data disk.
What version of Windoze? What BIOS version. It don't think either matter but it might help to answer the questions.

I got my XPS in 2014 and my service warranty finished in Jan 2015 before I installed Windows 10. So ever since I upgraded to Windows 10 I started having problems with by XPS 8700. Now I don't have any warranty. I thought once they released a BIOS update it would get better and it did for a while unfortunately within the past few months I have noticed two big issues.

1) Upon starting and restarting my computer my monitor does not end up receiving the signal from the pc and remains dark.
- I check that this is not an issue with the monitor by testing it with other pcs
- I checked in Device Manager and there was an Yellow Alert Next to Display Adapters/ NVIDIA GeForce GT 635
- Upon clicking on it showed me this: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

This unfortunately is not the only problem related to the graphics card.

2) My Sleep Mode has disappeared (It's related to Graphics and BIOS).
-  I have tried the to go in power setting to add it but it was not even listed.
-  I went into Command Prompt and looked up powercfg.exe This is what I found out:

A:DELL ALIENWARE AURORA R1, R3, X51, and XPS 8700

First there is a free upgrade from Windows 7 OEM to Windows 10 Retail so there is absolutely zero point in purchasing a Windows 8.1 Retail license...
Windows 10 TH2 is essentially a fixed version of Windows 8.1 where Metro Apps work correctly as "Windows".
Almost any system shipped with Windows 7 can run Windows 10. As they are 2009 and 2011 models respectively Dell did not provide updated drivers for Windows 8.x or Windows 10 because they are all out of warranty. All the drivers should be inbuilt into Windows 10 TH2 or automatically obtained via Windows Update. Its advised to update your BIOS to the latest revision before proceeding.
A Clean Installation also in general performs better. See here for details:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-windows-10-oem-and-retail-iso/
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1RkaknDn7v-Ucth4gt0U3BHVSY7oNkWr
Both systems likely have a legacy (non-UEFI) BIOS so take that into account when making the Bootable USB. Although you may want to look at the BIOS settings for the 2011 model to see if there is UEFI support.

Since I upgraded to W10, the Audio Service and internet connection both keep crashing. Randomly.

My computer is the only one hard-wired to the router. We have others and none loses their signal. I made sure to try wi-fi on and off, no difference. Tried a different cable.

The Audio service crashing is much more annoying. It happens every 15 minutes. Everytime, I can restart the service like if nothing happened.

I tried to update drivers, disable / uninstall every listing in the Audio controllers (device manager). I have NVIDIA, Realtek and Logitec Webcam 500 High Definition Audio.

Audio service keeps crashing, no matter what.

What follows is the text of the initial message that I posted at the Dell Desktop Forum regarding this problem:
Running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, Service Pack 1 on a Dell XPS 8700 Special Edition PC.  I am experiencing audio distortion/breakup & dropouts/skips when playing music from the computer through headphones or external speakers.  The problem occurs whether the source is iTunes, Windows Media or the optical drives.  The longer the listening time, the more frequent & severe the errors become.  When listening to ripped copies of the same music through an iPod connected directly to the audio system or headphones, no errors occur.  I have installed an ASUS Xonar U7 external sound card.  This seems to have improved the overall sound but it has not solved the distortion issue.  The relevant drivers appear to be up to date.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.
After a series of exchanges with Chris M, and performing actions suggested by him that included establishing that the Onboard Audio Controller was disabled & removal of the program REALTEK HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO DRIVER, Chris M's latest reply was:
I do not think that this is a computer hardware issue. The fact that both the Realtek and the 3rd party Xonar both have the issue points to the operating system resource allocation has the problem. You need to repost the issue on the Microsoft Operating System board to get their thoughts and opinions.

Before you go getting a new hard drive, I also had this issue. There are two versions of Win 7, one includes drivers and one doesn´t. Try this: go into your device manager and scan down to find your Audio then look to see if there are any big yellow questions marks. These will be missing or out of date drivers. Update or install these drivers then see how you go. Control panel> sound> test. Good luck.

My PC went into a restore mode on its own after locking up.  It had been updated to Win10, but after the restore it was back to Win7.  Most of my files are there along with MS Ofiice and the related data files.  Missing are my email program (Mozilla) and files and my Quicken and files.  There are a number of locked files that return "access denied" when I try to open the file or directory.  I'm guessing everythign is there, just hidden.  i have not reinstalled Mozilla or Qbooks yet, just in case that buries the files deeper.
Someone suggested i reinstall Win10....MS said they would give me another install for free after the 7/29 deadline, but again, I want to see if I can recover my files.  There is no restore point to go back to since the Dell utility ran.  Any direction will be appreciated.

I have two identical Dell XPS 8700 for my kids. They use mainly for steam games.

Both running the Windows 10 AU.

Today on one of them, by son said a message popped up and asked to stop a service and he clicked yes. Then all there was, was a gray screen and mouse pointer. He came and got me. The pointer would move but nothing else responded. So I did a power shut down. On reboot, the machine took around 40 seconds from seeing the dell logo to the sign on screen. This seemed very long. So I rebooted the other machine to see how long it takes, and it was only 3 seconds from the dell logo to the sign on screen.

I do not know if the long boot time has been going on or just started with this issue.

I ran sfc /scannow and it said no issues.

I remember in September 2015 ( a year ago) I had an issue with this machine where on power on, all I would get is the spinning dots at the Dell logo and it would not boot into windows. I even let it sit there for 24 hours and just spinning dots. I even tried new install of windows where the machine would let me install new windows, but after updates, the same thing happened with the spinning dots.

After a tons of troubleshooting, a dell tech recommended pulling the cmos battery. I did that and from then on it booted fine.

So since the long boot time did not seem right, I pulled the cmos battery again. waited 30 seconds, put it back in and booted into bios, change the clock (not sure if I had to but did), and then reboot and n... Read more

This is going to sound stupid/crazy/dumb/etc...but tonight, for the first time, I noticed a flashing white light on the front panel of my Dell XPS 8700...the light is next to the "Mini/MMC SD/RS/SDXC' slot...doesn't appear to have anything to do with putting an SD in. The light is sporadic, sometimes quickly flashing and then nothing..other times multiple flashes. My computer appears to be working fine.
I have searched all over the Dell site and can't find anything...I know on my laptop I have a flashing light next to the battery light..I have always assumed that is the processing light.
I feel like this something I should know; I just want to make sure that it is a normal thing.

A:What do the flashing lights mean on the front of the Dell XPS 8700?

Hi Troyj1972
Thanks for writing to us.
Do you see a cylindrical icon beside the light, it indicates the hard drive.
Which means there is a continuous access of data on the system which is indicated by the hard drive activity light. Even if you haven open any programs the HD activity will still blink as the windows is using few backend programs , drivers etc.
The system is working normal, nothing to worry about.

I currently own a Dell 8700 XPS.  I am running Windows 7 Home premium.  It has an i7-4790 and it won't turbo boost.  I have checked the settings to make sure it is enabled.  When I run AIDA64 Extreme, it ramps up to 3.59 but won't push past that.  The temperatures are all good, I believe the highest it gets is 72 degrees C on one core with and average of 68 degrees C for the the processor.  I only run the test for 10 minutes.  I recently updated the bios from the Dell Support page and it is running version A11.
I also downloaded and ran Intel's processor diagnostic and it passed.  Dell's CPU scan didn't detect any errors either.
Any suggestions?

Am seeing a problem I haven't seen before. When I put the ATI HD 5770 card in the Dell XPS 8700 and reboot the computer to install the driver, I see a black, blank screen, no video. I know that the system is booting from the sounds, but no video. I've tried using both DVI ports on the back of the card, booting in safe mode, but just not seeing any video.

The only thing that I can think of to try is uninstalling the previous card that's being replaced, Nvidia GT 720, and booting with the new card installed. But I'm not sure that'll help, I just don't understand why I'm not getting basic, legacy video when I reboot the computer with the HD 5770 installed.

Any ideas?

I am getting random BSODs with a brand new dell XPS 8700. I got my older SSD replaced through RMA assuming that could have been the cause and installed Windows 8 fresh install after getting the new dell. I've been having random BSODs on the computer, it will even happen when I'm not even using the computer and leave it on.

BSOD dump files attached.

? OS - Windows 8 64bit
? What was original installed OS on system? Windows 8 64bit
? Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? Came-preinstalled, but I reinstalled it when installing brand new SSD
? Age of system (hardware) Less than 2 weeks
? Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? Less than 2 weeks

? CPU: Intel i7
? Video Card: Nvidia GeForce GE GT625
? MotherBoard
? Power Supply - brand & wattage

? System Manufacturer: DELL
? Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom): XPS 8700

A:Brand New Dell XPS 8700 - Multiple BSODs

I have debugged the dumps and all seem to have the same error, I have done some research about your crashes and have found some possible causes:

1.) Incorrect BIOS Configuration
2.) Faulty RAM Module

The Fixes for these are as follows:
1.) Restore the BIOS Configuration
-OR-
2.) Remove the faulty RAM.

Modifying BIOS/CMOS settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. I cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk. But it may be the only way to fix the BSOD's you are encountering.

If I was in your position I would try restoring the BIOS first, before trying to remove RAM. If you are ensure on how to restore the BIOS please look at this before trying: How can I reset CMOS or BIOS settings?

I wouldn't try the hard reset unless the normal defaults do not work. If neither work then try removing the RAM.

Easy strait forward upgrade, NO PSU upgrade required, size of the card makes it easy to install, scores better than GTX 980 with less power consumption. Just make sure you clean uninstall the previous card download the driver form Evga for the new one and your done. 10-15 min upgrade.
I don't game so I cant day how well it does but I will be using this for video editing so i will post updates if needed. Here is a bench-test I've done: www.passmark.com/.../display.php

Will there be a BIOS upgrade to allow the DELL XPS-8700 to work with the soon to be released nVidia GTX1070 and 1080 cards?

If you have the current bios A10 or later yes.  Older systems will require a bios update.
The A10 bios is here and on the XPS 8700 page here.* Download/Save the file to the windows desktop* Before running A10, I would install the prior Bios in order* Disconnect any external hard drives, keys, printer, scanner, etc. You only want the USB mouse, USB keyboard, LAN, monitor connected* Run the executable from Windows* Allow the system to complete the installation and restart automatically. I just made a new Complete Factory Restore of my XPS 8700. I used an external WD My Passport drive. I cleaned and reformatted the drive before I started and the creation seems to have been successful.   I wasn't sure how much space it would take so I had this 500GB Passport available. The restore took about 10 GB. MY QUESTION IS : Can I store other folders/files on this drive and it won't mess up the restore function?RegardsJH

As far as I know yes, just keep your backup files/folders in a single folder in the root directory.  The restore program should ignore it since I believe its just a generic script that it runs.

You have a high end CPU and 8GB of RAM. You should NOT be having slowness issues, tbh.

Have you checked that the HSF is free if dirt dust and debris? Have you checked the CPU temps while under load?

Open msconfig and post everything under the STARTUP tab.

Six months ago, I installed Windows 10 from an update.  My computer had been using the 8.1 operating system.  For some reason, everything went haywire a couple of weeks ago, and I went to recovery and reset the computer to default factory settings.  It took quite a while for this to complete.

However, after I did this, I had several updates that had to be completed, and I did this.  Then the Windows 10 update logo appeared on the bottom of my screen, and I tried to update to Windows 10 from 8.1.

I am unable to do this now.  I get an error message that "We couldn't update the system reserved partitions."

When I contacted Windows Support, they said that sometimes after updating to Windows 10 and then refreshing, the next update wouldn't work well.

What can I do to get Windows 10 back on my computer.  I am so used to it, and I really like it.  I am old and cannot do really difficult tasks, but I can do some.

Thanks. for your help.

Hello ?

Not sure if I am right at this place?

I bought a Dell XPS8700 desktop in late 2014. I started out with Win 8.0 Home. From the very beginning, I had BSOD crashes. I updated to Win 8.1 Home, Win 8.1 Pro and now to Win 10 Pro, hoping that the problem will disappear with a newer OS. However, I still have those crashes (very annoying when working on important documents!). My drivers are up to date and the computer is free of viruses etc.

As far as I have found, this problem might be related to the PCASp60 and/or NIDS6 driver/key. However, there is no PCASp60 driver on my computer (and apparently not needed based on various sources, which I either cannot confirm or not confirm). If I delete one or both keys in the registry, there are still crashes, though. The system error message is always the same:

?The PCASp60 NIDS Protocol Driver services failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.?.

I did some more research and found that these drivers seem to be related to the Realtek PCI onboard LAN unit. But even if I disable the LAN in the BIOS and delete all Realtek drivers in System/MyDevices, the error still exists and my computer crashes.

I am wondering if this is a general problem/unresolvable error of this computer or if it can be resolved..?

I am close to exchanging the motherboard or even switching back to HP computers (which always worked very well for me in the past 15 years).

Thanks in advance for any comments an... Read more

I bought a Dell XPS 8700 last Aug ('15) for $999 from Costco online. We had problems almost immediately with the PC not powering up (at all). but since it occasionally worked, we waited too long to actually return the PC to Costco (beyond 90 days). We also did not install the PC until Nov '15 because we bought 5 PC's at once and it took time to install them all.
We called tech support and after four hours of getting the run around and "trouble-shooting" via phone with Dell's non-English speaking tech support staff, they finally agreed to send out a technician. Technician replaced power supply and on/off button. We thought it was fixed but no. We didn't really call Dale back because we never had time to spend another three or four hours on the phone and schedule another technician just way too time-consuming for us to do that and run a business so instead we suffered a long barely using the computer and using other computers that were working fine instead.
Fast-forward the clock today May 30, 2016. The computer is still under warranty till August 2016 I call Dell and explain the situation, and that we've already unsuccessfully had a field technician trying to fix the problem and they were unable to do so. I respectfully ask that they send a replacement computer as we didn't have the time to spend another 2 1/2 days troubleshooting with their phone tech-support team, and also field technicians they declined, stating that I should've cal... I recently installed a SSD hard drive on my new Dell XPS8700 and installed a fresh copy of Windows 8 using the OS disc provided by dell. After completing hours worth of windows updates and driver updates, i go into bios and switch back to UEFI mode only to get a bios error when booting.

The error message that displays is:

No boot device available. Strike the f1 key to reboot, f2 to run the setup utility.
Sata 0: Installed
Sata 1: Installed
Sata 2: Installed
Sata 3: None
Sata 4: None
Msata: None

I booted into the Windows 8 OS Disc and formatted the second hard drive and about 3-4 partitions it had using the "repair disc" tools provided in the OS Installation options. Also formatted while in windows 8 as a simple drive in NTFS with a drive letter.

I found something else on the internet that mentions using bootrec.exe tool. I've tried the scanos, fixmbr, and fixboot options; even though it says it completed successfully, it did nothing whatsoever. The /scanos detects no installation.

I'm still getting the error and the only way around it is switching to legacy mode. Does anyone know a way to fix this issue without having to reinstall the OS in UEFI mode?

A:Issue loading in UEFI mode after setting up Windows 8 on SSD on Dell XPS 8700

I ended up reinstalling Windows 8 from the disc. Apparently with Dell, when booting off the OS disc in UEFI mode, the dell logo appears and it pretty much freezes there for a few minutes til it loads Windows 8 installation process. This, I accidentally found out after having to get off the computer right when the dell logo appeared on my screen after selecting option to load off boot disc. Figures. None of the dell techs told me it would take a few minutes either. Either ways, I'm going to run hardware tests afterwards to make sure there is nothing wrong with any of my parts after windows update is complete.

I can see from the forums that this issue is occurring often with many users. Thus far, I cannot see a fix, despite extensive reading on the subject, without recourse to a new graphics card and PSU. Is it not about time that Dell owned up to this and issued new cards or at least gave the information required to solve the problem? This was a high cost, high end purchase direct from Dell and I need a solution. Please help.

A:Dell XPS 8700 with AMD Radeon R9 270 - random black screens and shut downs

*Which* 8700 system did you buy?
The system that you bought was *fine* for how it was delivered and "spec'ed" for.
The system that you bought was *not* designed to allow the user to do "any type of upgrade" they wanted.
For *most* XPS 8700 systems, an MD Radeon R9 270 is far past what the system was spec'ed for.
Dell offers *many* *options* in building systems. :-)

You can't get a "high-end" desktop, and expect it to be able to be used like a hard-core gaming or graphics workstation.
From what I saw, the MD Radeon R9 270 requires a "big" power supply.
www.realhardtechx.com/.../Page362.htm

www.tomshardware.com/.../power-supply-270-system.html

Since that advanced graphics card also generates a lot of heat, the *system* has to be designed to allow for that extra heat.

For the XPS 8900, Dell has their "extreme" series.
That's what's *required* for advanced graphics cards, *unless other mods are done to the system*.
For one, I strongly suggest a heat-sink upgrade along with a bigger power supply.

Imho, if people want an gaming system, then Dell sells gaming systems. :-)

I have two identical Dell XPS 8700 for my kids. I got them around May 2015.  They use them mainly for steam games and Office 2016.Both running the Windows 10 AU.Today on one of them, by son said a message popped up and asked to stop a service and he clicked yes. I do not know if the long boot time has been going on or just started with this issue.I ran sfc /scannow and it said no issues.I remember in September 2015 ( a year ago) I had an issue with this machine where on power on, all I would get is the spinning dots at the Dell logo and it would not boot into windows. I even let it sit there for 24 hours and just spinning dots. I even tried new install of windows where the machine would let me install new windows, but after updates, the same thing happened with the spinning dots. After a tons of troubleshooting, a dell tech recommended pulling the cmos battery. I did that and from then on it booted fine.So since the long boot time did not seem right, I pulled the cmos battery again. waited 30 seconds, put it back in and booted into bios, change the clock (not sure if I had t... Hi I've had the Dell XPS 8700 for over a year now and it's an excellent Desktop.
I've recently moved my tower to a new location and notice there is a solid orange light on all the time inside the PC, I believe it's on the motherboard... should I be worried this is on all the time? It's just I've never noticed it before.
Also on the back of the PC there is a solid green light, I'm guessing this is to just tell me the PC has Power.
I tried a google search but everyone with the orange light seems to have PC issues, my pc is working fine as far as I can tell.

A:Dell XPS 8700 Orange Light inside and Green Light on Back

LED on the motherboard will be on as long as the PC is plugged into a working outlet. It's perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.
If you unplug the PC from the wall and press/hold the power button for ~15 sec, that LED will go off. Again, perfectly normal...
Green LED says there's power to the PSU.

I have a Dell XPS M1210 running Win 7 Professional. Did a clean install on a brand new hard disk from a self-burned DVD (from the MS Student Discount program).

Some specs: C2D T7200 2.0G, 4GB DDR2, NVIDIA 7400, WD3200BEKT, A08 BIOS

Ever since the install (back in January), the laptop can only sleep/wake once. The laptop experienced no issues when running XP/Vista.

Boot -> Login -> Sleep -> Wake -> Sleep -> Hang -> BSOD (sometimes)

This problem is reproducible 100% of the time. I checked the system log between sleep attempts. Windows always logs the same error that reads:

"The platform firmware has corrupted memory across the previous system power transition. Please check for updated firmware for your system." The error cites the HAL as its source. The first and last corrupted page is always 63. Subsequent attempts to put the laptop to sleep cause the system to hang. Only the screen/wifi turn off - the rest of the computer is powered. The only way out is to press and hold the power button.

Microsoft does have a paper detailing the issue, and suggests updating the BIOS. However, the most recent version of the firmware for my system is already installed. I have tried updating stock Windows drivers with those from the manufacturer (ie Dell, Intel Chipset), but that did not help. Device manager shows no hardware conflicts/problems.

Are there any other XPS M1210 owners experiencing the same problem, or is this an isolated incident?

A:Dell XPS M1210 can't sleep more than once

Personally I don't recommend using sleep functions in Windows. While it may work wonders in Unix based systems, it's not quite as refined in DOS based systems. It frequently hangs, disrupts processes and causes BSODs. Just shut down your computer when not in use, if you have a decent system it should take no more than ~60 seconds to boot.

Exact same problem with Win7Pro on a Dell Inspiron 3847; Core i5-4400, 4GB ram.  Updating to Win10 is not a good option.  My wife's computer and she does NOT do well with change.  Running Win7Pro so I can keep running Office 2000 on it.

Hi,
My Dell XPS 15 undergoes BSOD when trying to put it in sleep by closing the lid. The computer fails to go to sleep and the heatsink fan keeps running. One of the BSODs were caused by Netwns64.exe, I had therefore updated the intel wifi drivers but other BSODs were caused by NTOskrnl.exe. I would appreciate any help.

The dump files are attached.

I do notice Symantec which is a frequent cause of BSOD's. I would remove and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials AT LEAST TO TEST

Hi people, I have two dell machines one at work and one at home. When left for around 1 hour they go into standby and never come back out again no matter what i do. The monitor light just stays on orange and no longer green. This means i have to power the machine down by holding the on/off button.

Sometime the machines can come out of standby but not often.

Has anyone any idea what might be causing this, seems to be a Dell only thing?

Thanks

A:why won't my dell inspiron 531 go to sleep

Do you have other devices, such as your network interface card or mouse, that could be set to "wake up" on use? If your NIC is, it may be a program performing an update or "calling back" to their server with info and therefore preventing your computer to use Sleep Mode.Apologies if I don't respond to your reply immediately. I don't check this site daily, but you're welcome to PM me as a reminder.

Hello, I am having trouble recently with my dell xps 13 9350. The computer starts up from OFF fine, however if I try to wake up the laptop after closing the lid or pressing the power button quickly (which in both cases causes the laptop to sleep) all i get is a blue screen with a loading wheel. The computer does not wake up and must be restarted by holding the power button for over 4 seconds.
I have had this computer for two months and this is the first issue I've had with it. Hoping someone can help me resolve this issue. Thanks!

Hey guys. I hope someone can help me.

I upgraded my Dell XPS9000 from Win 7 x64 Pro ? and it ran without a hitch ? to Win 8 x64 Pro. Now I have a weird shutdown problem.

If I start the machine, or reboot it, it goes into sleep perfectly as per Power Plan. When sleeping, the power light flashes. The system never crashes while I work on it before it goes to sleep ? for hours! Nothing happens until after the first Sleep. Then, when the system gets out of the first Sleep mode, it still works well for all the tasks I perform on it. Only after that, it no longer goes to sleep, the power light is solidly lit, and the system eventually crashes and shuts down. Of course, I don?t know it until I notice the power light being off, at which point I boot up and am greeted with a BSOD-esque message plastered over my Metro tiles saying the ?Computer had to shut down, report to Microsofr? or such. And then the cycle repeats.

Boots ? On ? Works ? Sleeps (blinking light) ? On ? Works ? Does not sleep (solid light) ? Crashes - Shuts down.

This cycle has been very consistent, and I was able to replicate it several times. I have compiled a crash file that contains several DMP entries.

Have reinstalled the OS several times, updated all the drivers, everything works great until the first sleep. Very strange.

Thanks in advance for any help you provide?

Hello,
I'm having an issue with my Dell XPS 15 laptop (i7, 4K Touch, 512GB SSD, Windows 10).
Issue:
- the laptop instantly wakes up after I put it to sleep (by pressing the power button or closing the lid);
- this happened after the laptop failed to hibernate from sleep and now it's happening every time I try to put it to sleep and it just wakes up instantly after the sleep starts;
- there are no waking devices or scheduled tasks, nor is the wireless card waking it;
- the issue seemed fixed after I updated the BIOS with the November firmware update (01.00.07), but it started again after another failed attempt to hibernate from sleep.

Thank you in advance for your help.

A:Dell XPS 15 (9550) sleep issue

Hello,
Even with the latest BIOS update 01.01.19 (05 Feb 2016), I still have this issue.
I was able to further explain the issue on this thread: answers.microsoft.com/.../ce44911e-c472-4773-8e7f-d3d58518aabc
I will transcribe it.
Some notes:

the expected behavior is: put laptop to sleep by pressing the power button > wait 1 minute (I configured it that way) > the laptop wakes to hibernate > the laptop hibernates > the laptop stays in hibernation until I boot it up again
the bug is: put laptop to sleep by pressing the power button > wait 1 minute > the laptop wakes to hibernate > the laptop hibernates > the laptop instantly wakes up afterwards
when the bug happens, the laptop is in a state where it wakes up instantly after every sleep, hibernate, and shutdown (even after restarting it)
to "fix" this state I have to prevent windows from booting up when the computer wakes. I usually shutdown the laptop, wait for it to wake automatically and hit the power button again, making it shutdown for real.

Steps to trigger the bug (default 'balanced' power plan with 1 minute to hibernate from sleep):

the laptop is plugged to the charger, with only a usb mouse connected
put laptop to sleep by pressing the power button
while asleep, unplug the power changer and disconnect the mouse
at the scheduled time (after 1 minute) the laptop wakes up to hibernate, and a sound is play... Read more

As of yesterday, if I put my Dell XPS 13 9350 (Windows 10) to sleep and wake it up again, it boots up from scratch, applications complain that they were forced to quit with unsaved files, etc.
It seems this specifically occurs if I unplug or plug in the power cable while the laptop is asleep. E.g. if it's plugged in, I put it to sleep, I unplug the power and then wake it up, it restarts. I'm fairly sure it occurs whether I put it to sleep by closing the lid, using the power button, or using the Start menu.
I assume this is due to some update Dell Update made a couple of days ago, but I don't know what it was.
I've since updated drivers from the Dell site, uninstalled video drivers (which fixed this problem for someone else on this site), and specifically checked that the battery-related drivers are up to date, but none of this helped.
Any suggestions?

So, I recently bought a Dell XPS 15 9550 i7 Skylake model, and the problem that bothers me is with the sleep mode. It's the 3rd day when i watch a movie on battery, close the lid with 70% of battery and wake up after 7-8 hours with 5-10 % of battery remaining. IT IS ABSURD !!! I paid a lot of money for this product, and I think this can be solved with a BIOS update. (i have .19 version of BIOS).
Please give me an answer of what I can do, and does anyone else have this problem??

A:Dell XPS 15 (9550) SLEEP Issue

This is a known Windows 10 issue. You can use the Power > Shutdown buttons and you think that it is totally shutdown, but it is not. I did that with my laptop which I did not have plugged in and a while later when I brought it back up, I discovered that the battery had almost run down. What you can do is shut off "Fast Startup". That should solve the problem. The XPS 15 will still come up fast enough without it.

HII've just purchased a 2nd-user Optiplex 745 USFF - from a computer reconditioning company. It came with Win10 installed - not a bad little machine - except for the noise from the fans / disk drive.
The fans (2 x case and 1 x disk) I've lubricated, which helped a little with the noise. I _think_ I've set Win10 to 'sleep' the pc after 15 minutes - it goes to sleep (screensaver come up) - and you can hear the disk drive and fans slow for a second or so, but then there's a 'clunk' and they come back on again at full (noisy) speed.
Running "Fanspeed" shows a core temp of 46c, but doesn't show any fan speed data ...
Any suggestions?ThanksAdrian

I have an odd problem. I've noticed that when I close my XPS 13, it shuts down (as indicated by the annoying front LED) but then later on it will start back up while it's being transported. Sometimes I'll get home, take it out of the computer case, and it will be as hot as a thermal missile because it's been running.
I'm not sure why it would just randomly start up like that? I have the power options to "sleep" when lid is closed, as seen here: http://i.imgur.com/p0x1C86.png.
I don't believe I have malware because I have reset my computer to factory settings on multiple occasions and scanned with SpyBot and Windows Defender.
In Bios "Wake on LAN" is Disabled.
For the life of me I can't think what would be triggering this besides the NSA (I joke). Does this happen to anyone else? Did you find a fix for it? Was it a dell program? Or is there a faulty piece of hardware on this computer?
Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Buy Dell Inspiron 15 i5558-5717SLV Signature Edition Laptop - Microsoft Store Online

So first off this is the laptop I have. I have a problem with it though. I bought it new around 3 months ago.

The problem is that when I plug and unplug the charger the laptop goes to sleep and I have to press the power button to start it up again. This happens 50% of the time when I plug/unplug the charger.

Also when I press F12 and F11 to increase/decrease the brightness the same thing happens around 50% of the time (the screen goes to sleep)

I've tried different outlets around the house and I've also tried a different charger (my dad has the same laptop and while his laptop doesnt have this problem when I use his charger with my laptop it happens to me)

Hi
I have a dell xps 15 l502x and since two days ago it wouldn't wake up from sleep. I can hear the fan kicks in as i try to wake it up but then screen stays blank. Only way to get the laptop working again is to hold the power button until it force shutdown and restarting it.

The sleep function was working perfectly from start to since 2 days ago. It happened after I updated a bunch of drivers with using driver booster software.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

A:Dell xps 15 L502x refuses to wake after sleep

The driver affecting sleep most is Display so you might be able to roll it back in Device Manager to get sleep to work again. Otherwise I'd uninstall it along with the software to see what driver Windows 7 wants.

Otherwise there are other fixes here for Sleep Problems.

Why use outdated XP-era driver finder software on a driver-complete OS? You may need to System Restore before this blunder.

Otherwise consider doing a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 paying close attention to the steps about how drivers are handled in Win7 which are so important they are in red. If still running the Factory Install then that is the worst install of Win7 one can have - you won't even experience native Win7 performance until you Clean Reinstall or at least Clean Up Factory Bloatware

Win7 delivers drivers via Important and Optional Windows Updates, after enabling Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3). Always install all Updates to get the latest drivers as well as Security and Performance patches that are critical to the OS and your hardware.

Hi everyone, needing some help here.
I have a Dell Inspiron 3650 purchased in July of 2016.  I have been having problems with the display not waking from sleep.  The hardware light on the monitor is on and the light on my wireless mouse comes on temporarily when I try to wake but the display won't turn on.  The only way for me to get the computer back working is to shut down the computer using the hardware power button and reboot.  I've done some basic troubleshooting including running the Dell Diagnostic Tests and setting the power settings to NEVER sleep (see screenshot).  However this still keeps happening.  Any thoughts?

A:Dell Inspiron 3650 Won't Wake from Sleep?

Have you tried using a brief push of the power button when a mouse move or key press doesn't work? Windows 10 has hybrid sleep and hibernation that requires a short press of the power button to wake the computer.

Then after logging in a dialog box appears that system has caused an unexpected failure of type BSOD 9f. Please find the required folder attached to this post. Thank you for your time.

I've tried everything I can think of to resolve this issue.  Last week for no particular reason, my PC would not "wake up".   I have it set to go to sleep, not hibernate, and I have always been able to push the space bar or move the mouse and wake up the PC.   Now it will not respond and I have to press the power button, which takes me to a "resuming windows" state, which is almost like a reboot.  I have upgraded the BIOS, video drivers, checked to see all of my windows updates have taken place (one looks corrupt), run most of the software from Microsoft to 1) test system files (SFC SCAN), 2) fix the Windows Udpate tool; 3) repair the .net framework, removed software I was no longer using and cleaned up the registry with ccleaner, run a complete chkdsk, nothing is making a difference.

I'm running Windows 7 Home SP1,  64 bit, intel Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40 GHz, 16 GB RAM,

This is my last hope before installing Windows 10 to see if it resolves the problem.

Thanks in advance,

I just put out a bunch of new Latitude E5550's for our users. This one user kept complaining that it would go to sleep randomly while she was typing. I tried re-imaging it, replacing the docking station, mouse, power supply and anything else plugged into it and it still kept doing the same thing. But I could never get it to happen while I was using it. So I replaced the laptop all together with a known good one and still the same results. Finally after I was about to give up completely I noticed she was wearing a bracelet and some rings on her right arm. I asked to try removing all her jewelry and see if that makes a difference. Sure enough it fixed the problem. Turns out her bracelet had a magnetic clasp that was triggering a sensor to think the lid was being closed and putting the computer to sleep.  I hope this can help someone save their sanity because I couldn't find anything on the web about anyone else having this same problem.

A:Dell Latitude E5550 randomly going to sleep

My first search about this issue led to this post and I'm glad you mentioned it because I was having the same issue.  My fitness track kept triggering the sensor in the laptop putting it to sleep.  I couldn't figure out why it was going to sleep when I touched it but I tested without my fitness track on and sure enough that was the culprit.

Recently upgraded my Dell XPS 13 L321X BIOS to ver 8. Since then, whenever I close the lid and put the laptop to sleep for several hours, the processor seems to come and the bottom frame is very hot. When the lid is opened the screen remains blank and doesn't wake from sleep mode. The only recourse is to do a hard shutdown with the power button and then restart. The laptop then reboots to the black trouble shooting screen, or select the normal windows boot. I've since tried to update all the drivers, but still no luck. It continues to run hot and refuses to start after placing the laptop in the sleep mode.

Any help appreciated!

I've opened a number of applications then closed the lid, letting it go into sleep mode. After extended periods of time, I'd open the lid and the computer wakes normally with no further issue. No overheated case, No blank screen. And no need for a hard shutdown and reboot with the power button.
Hope this remains the case, but I'll save your suggested steps in the event the problem returns, but so far it seems that BIOS upgrade vA08 was the problem and a reflash with v A07 was the solution.

This machine is locked in sleep mode as verified by the screen. No amount of keys pressed or mouse toggled will open it. Also i can not open the disc drive. There is a amber light on on the motherboard. I turn the power off for 1 hour and then turn it on you can hear a click then all stops except for the lights (incl switch on lights)
I replaced the ram with a known one from another computer, that was the only spare part i have. I would appreciate any input. Thanks

Hello,

You guys seem to have a good record of solving these BSODs. I have had several Laptops in the last few years and have only experience the rare BSOD. My new Dell however has had 6 in the last couple days. The last two seemed to occur while in sleep mode.

System Specs:
Dell Inspiron 1545 GP8J2N1
Windows 7 Home Basic sp1 64bit
Pentium3 Dual-Core T4500 2.3Ghz
RAM 2GB
Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset
SAMSUNG HM321HI 320GB

All info is attached as requested.

Hope you can find something in all this.

Thanks in advance!

I've noticed this happening now for a long time but never bothered to ask about it as it's no biggie. Whenever I put my Dell 8200 in sleep mode (via the keyboard button) and later wake it I have no sound. For some reason this act knocks out my sound totally. No music, nothing. I have to reboot in order to activate my sound.
Is there a setting somewhere I can tweak to correct this?
Thanks!

About a month ago, I had my friendly Dell rep dispatch a tech to replace my Bluetooth module and CD drive. Afterwhich, Bluetooth still wouldn't work, and I'm positivie that it's a software issue. I called them back about that issue, and the one I'm asking about below, and according to Dell, my only option is to reinstall windows. He didn't grasp the fact that I couldn't back up my files.

Since the repair, my laptop won't go into sleep, hibernate, or shut down when I close the lid. I also started getting a 'last backup failed' error, and when I try and backup or create a restore point, I get a the 'insuffecient memory for VSS Shadow copy' message with error 0x800423F1.

It will shutdown when I use the shutdown in the windows orb, as well as it goes into some form of sleep/hibernation when I push the power button. The reason I say that is when I open it up and push the power button again, I get a 'resuming windows' message and screen.

Also, I don't think it's a mechanical issue. Reason being, when I close the lid, and open it back up, my mouse will freeze and act drunk for 3-15 seconds. To me that says that for some reason, the program that commands sleep/hibernation is not firing off, or firing off to completion.

I've tried several tutorials/suggestions from this website and others regarding adjusting power settings, disabling wake from sleep in device manager, doing repairs from the windows disk, etc.

I'd appreciate any and all ideas- I don't want to reload Vista... Read more

I know this is an issue for many users and it was for me. I probably found the solution, at least the problem is fixed for me.
It pretty much looks like not the Intel stuff is the problem but the WiFi that keeps the machine up.
Go to
Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections
Right click the Wifi adapter and select "Properties", then "Configure" and uncheck the box under "Power Management". Reboot.
Fixed everything for me so far.

About three months ago, my wife noticed the laptop was crashing when she'd wake it up.  The error was "Bad Pool Header."   It would reboot and everything worked fine.  I couldn't find anything online about it and I was tired of being haunted with the Windows 10 upgrade.  So I went ahead and upgraded the laptop to Windows 10 hoping the issue would resolve itself.    It didn't.  I received the same error.
Today I took some time and researched the error some more and tried to contact Dell Support.   That didn't go so well.   Since I bought a refurbished unit from Amazon, the laptop is still registered to someone else.  They won't talk to me until the warranty information is updated.  (That's a separate battle I'm fighting with Amazon.)
Anyways, I'd love to restore the laptop to the original settings but the laptop doesn't have a DVD drive nor does it have a restore partition.  There is also no recovery image saved on the drive.   So, I'm stuck unless there is a way to find out what is causing the bluescreening.
When I was troubleshooting today, I had the system checked and there was one update that installed for the chipset.   After the chipset update was installed, the issue remained, but the error changed.  "System Service Exception"    The laptop reboots and it returns to normal.

A:Dell Inspiron 3147 Crashing when waking up from sleep

Hi Dave,
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/24FHltP
And reinstall the chipset drivers manually from the same site above.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. Also, run an extended / thorough test on the memory and HDD.
Run a stress test on the system - http://dell.to/1NEc1Y4
The system is compatible to work with Win10. If you are keen to restore the system to W8.1 - then see this link - http://bit.ly/1RMaCdK
If you have the invoice of the purchase, which states the service tag of the system - not a paypal receipt, then you could transfer the warranty ownership online here - http://dell.to/1KpVTpc
Write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Hi,
I have a Dell XPS 410 running windows xp and every time i try to turn on the computer it shows the Windows XP logo as if it is about to boot but then the screen goes blank and the power button on the monitor turns orange. Moving the mouse or typing on the keyboard both fail to yield any change. I have had this problem with several monitors I have tried plugging into this computer that work fine on every other computer.

I have been trying to figure this out forever so hopefully someone can help!

I am using a new Dell laptop with I5 processor and Windows 8.1.  My problem is that I cannot find out how to prevent the screen from blanking after 10 minutes of no keyboard entry.  This is happening to the secondary monitor on an extended desktop setup.  The primary monitor (built in display) stays up but the secondary will go black.  Anybody got an idea of what is going on?

Just thought that when I'm just running the built in display, the screen will blank shortly even though the power settings are set to 3 hours to dim and never to blank the display.

Maybe it's the screen saver.  I need to check that!

Well, the screen saver was set to blank after 10 min.  I changed that setting and it probably will fix my issue.  I don't know why I didn't think of looking there before I posted...

Hello.
I have Dell Inspiron N5110 which cannot shut down neither in Windows 7 nor in Ubuntu Linux. I specifically booted Ubuntu Live from the CD to eliminate the possibility that  the problem is in the Windows 7. Shutdown in Ubuntu does not work either. This proves that the reason in not a BACKGROUND application in Windows that remains hanging and does not allow the laptop to shut down.
The laptop cannot wake up after Sleep or Hibernate either.
I have tried every solution that you advised to all the other people in the forum that have the same issue.
1. The laptop cannot shut down in Safe Mode either.
2. It cannot shut down even after Clean Boot Mode - all non-MS services disabled and all Startups disabled.
3. I tried changing the Advanced Power Options of "Allow Hybrid Sleep" - both ON for "On AC Power" and "Running on battery" - no change.
4. I tried installing the latest video drivers for Nvidia. This did not help either.
5. Running only on battery does not change anything - still cannot shutdown.
6. Running only on AC adapter without battery - still cannot shutdown.
7. I tried removing the AC adapter and battery and holding the POWER button for 30 seconds to RESET the laptop - did not work.
ATTENTION: I've been reading your forums all day and saw at least 10-15 reports of the same problem and not a single fixed case.
8. This is why I have not tried Flashing the BIOS to the latest version - I read other people tried t... Read more

A:DELL Inspiron N5110 does not Shut Down and does not wake up from Sleep

Remove the keyboard and palm rest (guide from dell shows you how) and you should see a small coin cell battery. Remove it for at least 10 seconds, then put it back in. Enter BIOS and make sure there isn't anything weird that was changed. It should work properly now. I have had this working in Ubuntu 12.04 for the last few days, with no problems.

This happens randomly.  I can't seem to reproduce it on call.  Basically I close the lid to put it to sleep but the computer doesn't go to sleep. Airplane mode just turns on but the laptop stays on.

A:Dell XPS 13 9350 Airplane mode sleep issues

Hi Viper2ko,
Thanks for writing to us.
When did the issue start?
Please update the BIOS and video drivers, also check the advanced power option settings ensure nothing is hindering the sleep mode from working.
Also do let us know what windows the system is running on, do PM us the system tag# by clicking on my name in blue and select send a private message .
Meanwhile you can go through the below steps to check more on the issue
Open the Start menu and then enter cmd into the search box. Hit enter and the command prompt window should open for you. If not, click it in the search result list.
Note: it is possible that you will need administrative privileges to complete the next part successfully. If you are having trouble, you can attempt to run cmd as Administrator. To do this, search for cmd again, and then right-click it and select Run as administrator.
Now that you have the command prompt window open, enter the following at the command prompt:

powercfg -requests
There is a space after powercfg
Hit enter .
If any process or device is preventing your system from going into sleep mode, information about it will be displayed here. The program will attempt to give you precise information on the disturbance
Though we can always rely  on this method, but good to give it a try.

Hi Brink

I'm having a problem with my notebook. It keeps turning display off after idle for 2 or 3 minutes and going into sleep mode around five minutes after that. I did change and set power system in control panel many times but it did not work. I'm runing on Window 7 home basic 64 bit. I'm hoping you could help me on this. Thank you in advance.

A:My Dell Notebook keep turning display off and going into sleep mode.

Hello Taey, and welcome to Seven Forums.

While changing the advanced power plan settings, double check to make sure that your default power plan is still selected. It's a bit to easy to change it by mistake and not notice it. In addition, double check your Battery settings to see if the percentage levels may be set to cause this by mistake.

Hope this helps for now.
