The tips I got with this Kensington 33197 power adapter have numbers stenciled on them like N3, N5, N19, etc. The tips sold on their web site make no mention of the "N" numbers and have numbers like K20059, K20050, etc. and there is no cross reference.

You can also see a complete reference for "N" numbers to all the laptops they support at the above link. Again, no mention of the numbers Kensington uses on their site.

I need a cross reference for these kinds of numbers.

Kensington referred me to their telephone tech support; but, there is a language or cultural barrier that prevents their understanding what I need.

Does anyone know of such a reference?

My laptop will no longer turn on.  When the AC adapter is plugged in, the LED light is white indicating power is arriving at the laptop. However, nothing happens when I push the power button. Troubleshooting steps I have completed already include: Hard reset (several times including after each step below)Tried starting without the batteryRemoved all removable components and reseated themRemoved all removable components as well as bottom cover. Cleaned with compressed air. Put everything back.Nothing appears wrong and nothing happened between the last time it turned on and this time that I am aware of. The laptop is out of warranty, and I am pretty handy with computers. Is there anything that can be suggested short of a hardware replacement that would help get this resolved? TIA

Hello all, my power supply for my laptop quit working and i am looking for a new one. The input is 120/240, 50/60Hz and the output is 19V & 3.15A. I have found many plugs like this or very close to this with the same voltage and slightly different amperage but I am worried if I buy this over the internet the actual little round connector thing that plugs in at my lap top may physically be too big or too small. How can i determine if I am buying the right one?

A:PS adapter connector size

Do any of them claim to be a replacement for your model? Have you searched using either your laptop model number or the power supply part number?

Many of them do use a "standard" size connector, but there are enough proprietary models around that I won't say it will work.

This is a common problem (I see lots of posts)
The problem source is the [Dell] AC adapter.  PA-21 Family, 65W, P/N: NX061.  It is made in China.
I have an XPS M1330.  Using Dell after warranty service, replaced the Mother Board twice, replaced the battery twice, replaced the AC adapter twice - not fixing it.
Turns out the power warning message is very informative.  It states "Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance".  So, I plugged in my Dell 95W adapter - WOW Problem Solved.
A lab test of my new Dell 65W AC adapter shows it to be 64.6 watts.  If this unit gets hot (like after several hours of use), it may not put out the full 65 watts - the system may not recognize the adapter, it may power the system ok, but won't charge the battery.
These units burn out after only a few months of use. Their cables are too fragile. If Dell's or their supplier's Quality Control can't produce a reliable 65W product - I found seveal "Made In USA" universal adapters.

A:AC Adapter - Alert - "AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined"

Well my solution was simple.
I just removed the battery pack and powered up my notebook. Then I turned off the notebook replaced the battery pack and VOILA. The error message was gone.

I am new here and wasn't sure where I should post this as I can see it applying to multiple categories.

I have two NAS storage adapters, both are CiragoLink+NUS2000 Devices. Each unit accommodates 4 USB hard drives up to 2 terabytes per attached drive. On both devices I have attached Western Digital external USB hard drives ranging in size from 500GB's to 1.5TB's.

The issue I am having is; if I "Map a Network Drive" to create a shared directory on any of the drives attached to the NAS adapters, Windows reports both the total disk size and free space available incorrectly. e.g. all of the attached drives show up in Windows explorer as having 55MB's of 62MB's available, when in fact it should report several hundred gigs available out of around 1 terabyte.

So not sure if this is a Windows' issue, an issue with the NAS adapter or if it's user error. Just an FYI, I get the same results on any PC, Windows XP or 7 when trying to connect to any of the drives.

Because of this issue, Windows' thinks the drive(s) is almost full and will not let me copy data to them.

Can anyone help me understand what is going on here? Thanks for the help.

Your best bet for this specialty hardware is to call the company that makes it.

To me, it seems not possible that Windows won't recognize your password. If you use a Microsoft ID to login to your computer, can you login to your Microsoft ID from another computer,to prove that the ID and password are still working? You can remove the hard-drive from your computer, and attach it as a "slave" disk-drive to another computer. Then, you can backup all your bookmarks/files/music/E-mail from that drive.

I have a PC that is running WIN98SE, on a AMD Athlon XP 2000 CPU, 256MB DDR 2100 RAM, a 40 GB HD, a 2GB HD, DVD-ROM drive, CD-RW drive, and a GeForce 440 MX video card. I was wondering if a 300 Watt power supply is big enough?

After I hooked the PC together, it ran until about 24 hours later, non-stop, it burnt out the 300 Watt power supply. I wanted to know if I burnt the power supply out because of wattage, maybe a bad power supply, or maybe heat. The machine was running a bit warmmer than it should, but it has enough room to discharge the heat around the PC.

I bought a bigger 350 Watt power supply and everything works fine now for more than 24hours, non-stop.

Any help is great!

A:What Size Power Supply?

I doubt you burned out the supply, it was probably it's time to go. Even if the supply isn't adequate for the system, it'll just shutdown, not burn up. OTOH, I'd think that the 350 watt supply is about right for the system you have.

I recently built a new computer but the power supply keeps going bad. This will be the third time that I've replaced it. I'm thinking that maybe it's just not big enough for the computer, so I am considering buying a bigger one. The problem is that I don't really have the funds to buy one, so if I do buy one I need to make sure it's not going to go bad again.

How do you figure out what size power supply your computer needs?

I need to replace my power supply and I"m wondering what size I should get.

I run a P4 2.6GHz, 1024 PC2100 RAM, GeForce4 TI4200, 2 HArd drives, 2 cd drives.

I don't want to just "skimp by" with the bare minimums, I want to make sure my PC is nice and healthy, but at the same time I don't have a lot of money, so I want to go with the smallest supply that will still be actually safe and healthy for my PC.

I was thinking of 350. Should that be plenty for my usage?

Thanks!

For the last two weeks, every time I start my Dell INSPIRON E1705 while using the power supply I am greeted with the following message. "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation". I press the F1 Key and everything works fine. I've read about this on other websites and most say it's a design flaw in the power supply after the cord has been properly wound around the supply as designed. Apparently a few of the cords internal wire strands become broken and cause this message. My computer is from June 2006 and shouldn't be having this issue so early...or ever. This seems like a flaw that should have created some type of manufacturers recall since so many people are having this issue. I'm of course out of warranty, will Dell replace this free of charge?

`

A:Power Supply - "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined....."

You are correct, the failure is due toloss of the power supply ID signal. Sometimes this happens because of strain on the plug, which breaks the signal wire. Some even are so severe that the insulation breaks away from the plug; this is due to rough handling. The other cause is one or more of the power socket solder connections to the system board become broken. This also is related to severe handling. I have seen one case where all three power connections and three of four mechanical connections were disconnected. If the power supply is bad, a replacement will cure the problem. If not, then the socket is bad, and this will require a system board replacement. If you are experienced, you can try to resolder the connections. I am experienced and was not able to get my daughter's E6000 to work by resoldered. More recent Dells are using a replacable power connection board which is a much cheaper repair.

Hi , I would like to ask for your opinions on my following dilemma.
My current setup is the following :
E6750 @ 2.66ghz
Msi P35 Neo Motherboard
Thermaltake TR2 430W Power supply
2 GB of 667mhz kingston ram
an HIS ATI RADEON 4870 512MB
X-Blade PC Case
I'm about to upgrade my motherboard , CPU and Power supply
and i dont know which power supply will fit in my case , i was thinking about the Ultra LSP750 since i could get it for about 50 dollars . For the processor im going to upgrade to a Q9550 and for the motherboard a "Gigabyte EP45-UD3P ATX LGA775 P45" motherboard.

Anything i should worry about ? What about the power supply?
Thanks alot in advance,

-Mastaline

A:Power supply size , Anything Else? Recommendations?

If the Ultra is used, don't bother. A Corsair 650TX is not that much more on a deal as new, and well enough for you. Both will fit though. FWIW, the Ultra is a 550 watt (45 A on the 12V rail = 540W of actual meaningful power output. And who knows how truthful that rating even is...) power supply advertised as a 750W one. Doesn't say anything good about its quality.
As for he CPU+motherboard upgrade, don't bother. If you're not getting them for ~150-200$ in total used, they're just not worth getting. Socket 775 is dead, and Q9550 is not really a sensible option compared to Phenom II x4 955 and i5-750.

Just read about the deal on the Ultra at TD, but I strongly recommend against it.

Hi,
I'm currently running a machine with an 8-core processor and a 550W Power Supply.

The machine won't run on all 8 cores. It gets to the "Windows Startup" screen and shuts down. It's not running hot as far as I can tell, and if I manually shut down a pair of cores in the BIOS it runs just fine. I am currently running it on 6 cores, but would like to run it on all 8.

Is my Power Supply not powerful enough, or do you think it's another problem?
Thanks.

My System:
Processor: AMD FX 8120 (8-core), 3.1GHz Socket AM3+

I am trying to buy some large hard drives for older Dell systems (ie) Optiplex GX110, etc. I continue to be told by the sales folks at BestBuy and CompUSA that there may be a power supply issue with the legacy systems. I may be putting a large drive and a smaller boot drive in the same system, and I don't want to burn out the system or start a fire.

Can anyone spread some light on this?

Thanks

A:hard drive size and power supply

I doubt the difference between a new 7200 and old 5400 RPM hard drive is more then a few watts. The size, or capacity, of the drive has no impact as far as I know. If you are replacing an existing drive with a new drive then there will be no issue power wise. Even if you add a second drive I doubt you'll have a problem. I worked on many Optiplex systems and never had a problem adding a second drive or replacing the existing drive.

Now replacing a power supply in a Optiplex is hard er as most will not acommodate a standard ATX power supply.

One issue you may run into though is a BIOS limitation on the size of hard drive you can install. There are 8GB, 32GB, 127GB barriers. However DELL has BIOS for the GX110 that'll adds 48 bit LBA support which allows to use drives larger then 127GB if you wish.

Hello,

a. Is a 300 watt power supply sufficiently large for a desktop pc ?

PC would have a single 1 TB hd, and lots of USB ports usage.
No gaming, but lots of videos.

Or, would 400 watts be a lot "safer" ?

b. USB 3 usage very prevalent these days, or USB 2 still most popular and used ?

Thanks,

A:Power Supply Size Question. (and on USB 2 or 3 usage)

You may want to upgrade later so it would pay you to install the 400w PSU.

A:Power adapter

Hi SUSMI,
The system is designed to support both 45W and 65W adapters - see the specifications here - http://dell.to/2fhPLIf
When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.

I recently bought a replacement power adapter for my dell e1505. The computer works but it won't charge the battery and tells me that since the computer does not recognize the charger, I need to reseat the power adapter... What does that mean?

A:Power Adapter

Hello aaronbaron,

Reseat the power adapter just means make sure the power adapter is plugged in good on the laptop and the wall outlet. I would try powering off the laptop, unplug the power cord, take the new battery out. Reinstall the new battery only and try to power on the computer. If that does not work plug in the power cord and power up with the new battery installed.

I bought a Dynex USB 2.0 4-Port Hub last week and have decided to add an external power supply to power the hub. The short and terse User Manual notes on the final page that a 5Volt / 2.5 Amp Power Adapter may be connected. I called their customer support number and talked to a lady, but her best advice was return to the store and ask there. My experience with this store over the years has been fat chance for this kind of request. Has anyone got a suggestion as to where I can purchase such a USB Power Adapter?

A:USB Hub Power Adapter

Radio Shack would be a good place to start although you might have to get one of their adjustable models. A Google search should also turn up something. Actually I just replaced my D-Link powered USB1 hub with a USB2 model. The old one is just sitting around and it has a 5V 2.4A adapter. If you want it so you can use the adapter just PM me and I'll send it to you.

Hello,

I bought a dual sata-usb 3.0 adapter, came with 2A power supply, no problem to start with one of the HD however if i plug two of them most of the time it won't start totally (disk starts but one make strange sound cause not enough power to finish initializing)... Of course both drive are fine. Should i get a more powerful AC Adapter?

Thanks!

A:Power needed for two 2TB hard drive (3.5" size)?

Does it matter which slots the drives are inserted in to? Having said that, it could well be a power problem. But why should you get a different adapter? If the adapter came with the dock, it should be capable of supporting the dock's full capacity. Unless, of course, the manual states that only a single disk is supported at any given time.

It would be useful to have the make/model number of this adapter to be able to check it out. What are the reviews like (if any), and have others been having similar problems with it according to their forum (if they have one) ?

Ok, so... As you know a motherboard has a main power connection, and the number of pins varies - 20+4, 24, 20 pin... and I think 20/24+6 pin in some cases.

Now, I am going to purchase http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188024, which is an EVGA motherboard with a 24 pin main connector.

That is set in stone, and almost as much so is the power supply of choice, a fantastic creation by Zalman:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817379007

But this is a 20+4 pin configuration.

So, having never tried to get one to work with the other in the past (i always chcked the pins were the same on previous builds), is there a way to hook up that sexy motherboard with that beast power supply? Will the "+4" pins simply plug into the last four pins of the 24 on the mobo like a USB header (with the 20 pin and 4 pin snug side by side on the 24 pin mobo) , or is there any sort of adapter?

Or do I have to find a new PSU. That would suck.

Also, I would be willing to cut up a pair of adapters and put together my own 20+4 to 24 pin adapter if they are not available (cannot find them... so I assume it is not needed though). Although I would need an adapter.

I have a Inspiron 15 3541 touch screen and "misplaced" my power cord and adapter. I'm using a Dell adapter from a different computer, but when I turned on my laptop, I get a message requiring a system or admin password even before it boots up. Is this because of the different adapter? How many pins did my adapter have? What problems does a different adapter create?

A:Power adapter pins

The password that is showing up before your computer boots sounds like there is a BIOS password set on the computer.  Unfortunately if you don't remember that password then you are probably stuck.  You can probably go online and search and see if there is a way to reset BIOS on the laptop and get it to default and remove the password that is set on it.  If there is a hard drive password though then the only way to remove that if you forgot it is to install a new hard drive as the password will follow the drive, not the computer.
Your power supply should have only 1 pin.  Dell used the same adapter for their computers for a while, they come in different wattage though and if you use an adapter that is too low then it may not be able to charge the battery while you use it or at all.  If the plug fits and it is a Dell charger you should be okay to at least get the computer up and running.  If it is a low wattage charger and the setting is set in BIOS (usually is by default) you'll get a message from your computer telling you that the charger isn't powerful enough to charge the battery while in use.

The Yoga 3 Pro power adapter looks like a normal USB brick, and the cord looks like USB, except with a kink in the connector at the Yoga 3 Pro end. Can I charge my phone or tablet with it?

A:What's with the Yoga 3 Pro power adapter - it's a ...

Yes the Yoga 3 Pro power adapter is a USB charger too!

How does it work?

The special "fool proof" charging cord has two extra pins on the AC adapter end and two extra pins on the Yoga 3 Pro end. The extra pins only make a connection when the fool proof cord is plugged in to the Lenovo charger and the Yoga 3 Pro. When a regular USB cord is plugged into either the charger or the Yoga 3 Pro, it makes a regular USB connection.

Can I charge the Yoga 3 Pro with any USB charger?

No. The Yoga 3 Pro requires 2A at 20V, which is what the provided 40W Lenovo AC adapter supplies.

Can I charge a USB device with the Yoga 3 Pro AC adapter?

Absolutely. In addition to 2A at 20, the Yoga 3 Pro AC adapter supplies 2A at 5.2V (10.4W), enough to charge a phone or tablet. Works for iPad.

Where can I buy spare AC adapters and cords?

AC adapters with cords are sold in the accessories section of the Lenovo store.

Where do I find the part numbers for the AC adapter and cord?

Look for AC Adapters In the PDF Yoga 3 Pro Hardware Maintenance Manual.

What are the USB specs of the Yoga 3 charging port?

It's a USB 2.0 port. It provides enough power to charge an iPhone, but not enough to charge an iPad. If you want to charge an iPad, try the USB 3.0 port on the right of the Yoga 3 Pro.

My neighbour was given a second-hand computer and asked for my help setting it up.

It is a Dell Optiplex 755 running Win7.

Currently installed graphics is NVidia Quadro FX 3500.

I looked up the service tag and this is not the original card (Original was ATI HD2400XT).

The issue I have is that the FX3500 is an 80W card, with the PCI-E slot having a max of 75W. On booting I get low power warnings from the NVidia card.

The card has a 6 pin PCI-E connection available for the additional power, but the PSU has no PCI-E power cable.

The only free power cables from the PSU are a couple of 15pin SATA cables. I have seen adapter cables for 15pin SATA to 6 pin PCI-E. Are these any good for my situation?

If not, what are the alternatives? New PSU? Different GFX card?

A:Power adapter cable for PCI-E

Based on what you just told us, one of those adapter cables should work just fine.

I have a 20 pin motherboard but the power supply I have available has a 24 pin connector. I've read that you can simply plug them together by offsetting the 24 pin one but so far I don't see that working at all (and 'never the twain shall meet', so to speak). I've found adapters but they all say something akin to

'allows you to connect your existing 20 pin power supply to your new 24-pin compatible motherboard'

You can use it the other way around, correct?

thanks

A:20 to 24 pin power supply adapter

Some mainboard connectors are 20+4 pins where the 4 pins unsnap from the 20 pins for use with boards with a 20 pin connector. If your power supply doesn't have that feature you would use an adapter such as this.

I have a 90w power adapter from an older notebook that will work with my HP DV5-1015nr. I transport my notebook between home and office. I'd like to utilize the older power brick, so that I won't need to transport a power brick back and forth. The tips on both adapters, of course, are of a different diameter.      My multi-tester identifies that the tip is hot for both adapters. The problem I have is that the older power brick has two wires: core wire (+) and shield (-), and the newer power adapter has three wires: shield that is connected to the core of tip (+), black that is connected to outer part of cylindrical shaft that must be the ground, and white connected to inner part of cylindrical shaft (also negative?). So do the black and white wires on the newer adapter need to be soldered to the shield on the older one?

A:Wiring for Power adapter?

Just a guess, since it is 90watt, they may have run the extra wire to carry the load, shield is always much larger than center tip wire. Did you measure voltage and ploarity of all three connections with the brick plugged in? Tip is always + and ouside is always - on a HP, not sure what the third is, see if there is any voltage on it, It could also be some sort of sensor wire for the charging system on the mobo. Better to buy another adapter than smoke the motherboard on the lappy taking a chance. If you want to chance it just connect the two wires that are on the center and outside. Leave the 3rd odd one unconnected. probably can be found used for cheap.

Hello!

I received the following message when I am booting up my Dell ATG Laptop. Does this mean I need a new power cord? If so, is there anywhere recommended to purchase or do I just go to the dell website?

The AC Power Adapter Wattage and Type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance. To resolve this issue, try to reset the power adapter. Strike the F3 key (before F1 or F2 key) if you do not want to see the power warning again.

Strike the F1 to to continue. F2 to run the setup utility, Pree F5 to run onboard diagnostics.
Thank you so much for the assistance!

I have a compaq nx6325 lap top, which will not turn on at all. The power adapter
shows 18V between the inner and outer ring and appears ok, led on etc.But what's the tiny center connector for in the plug? Should there be a voltage on it to earth, or to the ring connectors? Finally, should I be able to power-up the lap-top with the power adapter plugged in, and the battery out?

A:Power adapter center pin

Sounds like the Centre pin has broken away and lodged itself in the plug. I cannot tell you which is positive and which is negative with regards to the rings on the plug. Because different Manufacturers use different combinations and with that different Voltages too. Generally speaking the outside piece is the male end and the receiving plug is the female -go figure-
Hope this link works http://www.niteflux.com/BuyCables.aspx you can see what I am mentioning, obviously this is not your cable but for the example of male to female ends the description matches the pictures ( not the 'Y' cord on the link )

This is a recent problem - a previous adapter broke and now subsequent adapters use 100% CPU and sloooow my laptop.

It's an hp 6720s 13 months old, XP Home, HP 65W power adapter.

Laptop running fine on battery only. Laptop runs fine when battery removed and power adapter is connected. Laptop does not run fine when battery and power adapter connected - 100% CPU.

Also, the charge indicator light no longer works and the power icon does not show that the battery is charging, although it is.

I've updated the BIOS, restored factory power settings and tested the power adapter during startup and have the same prob with the CPU usage.

What could cause the power adapter to use 100% CPU? Please let me know if you need more info, cheers.

Hi everyone.

I know that this is not really entirely related to a Windows 7 computer and especially to these forums, but I really need some advice on this and it would be great if anyone who has experience in voltage, amps and safety for laptop power adapters would be perfect.

My friend has just traveled down to my house for a week but has foolishly forgot his plug for the power socket on his power adapter. He uses this for his computer. Again unrelated becuase it is an Apple 45W MagSafe2 adapter.

So I was wondering if he could simply use a cord like this one below to plug into the adapter?
The black cord is 2.5A 250V~

The adapter is 100-240V~ 1A

These are both for input.

Any help would be greatly appreciated .

A:Power Adapter Problem

That white 'thing' appears to be for an Apple Macintosh MacBook/MacBook Pro [I have a MacBook Pro] and you might not be able use the black cord due to fit, the V-shaped notch in the black plug would have to let it be inserted. But it probably won't hurt to try as it's still a 110/120Volt source.

The MacBook power adapter also came with a piece that replaced that cord and has the prongs to plug directly into a wall socket/extension cord, maybe it's in his Notebook bag.

Though I had posted this previously, but cannot find it anywhere!

Got an Altec Lansing Multimedia Computer Speaker System ACS41. Apparently they were used on a Gateway 2000 PC.
However, the power adapter was lost.
The speakers do not have any electrical specs on them regarding voltage, amps, and polarity.

Anyone have a similar set of speakers, or,
know of any way this type of info can be found out, in order to get the right power adapter for them. Do not care to fry them with an overkill. The speakers probably came with PCs running Windows 98SE, or Windows Millennium.

Prefer not to go to Radio Shack, they normally are rather expensive, and the people who own this do not want to go that route.

Thanks for the help.

I am planning on making this project myself but first I have one question. Here is the project I will be making:
http://siliconrepublic.blogspot.com.au/2011/02/arduino-based-pc-ambient-lighting.html

It says I need a 12V DC supply for powering the breadboard. When searching up for 12V DC supplies, I only get power supply's that plug into the wrong wall socket (I live in Australia).
Do I need to get something like the article suggests:
http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-AC-Veh...1KZ6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1297231222&sr=8-2

Or can I get something such as this:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DC-12V-1...?pt=AU_Laptop_Accessories&hash=item336678ae52
If the first option is the only possibility, how do I get the plug to go into my wall socket?
Also, how do I get the other end plugged into the breadboard when the product just has a single plug on the end?

A:What type of power adapter do I need?

You can use the Ebay adaptor, the easiest way to get 2 wires is to get a socket that fits the plug, like this one :- http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/5-5-x-2-...05?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item4167b5b34d and solder 2 wires to that socket.

The circuit at your link uses a 2 wire plug into the breadboard, you would have to get a similar plug OR you could push bare wires into the breadboard.

OR you could cut the plug off to reveal the 2 wires but they will probably be quite thin and may not connect well if pushed into the breadboard holes.

"Alert! You have attached an undersized 130W power adapter to you system, which is less than the recommended 180W power adapter" ... message carries on a bit.
Now the thing is both the TB15 power adapter and 7510 power adapter are the same (identical part number) and  are shown to be 180W output.
What's the problem here and what do I need to do ?

A:Undersized power adapter

Any one any idea on this error ? Message appears at Bios post stage... i.e. early on just after switching on.

I went to SSDs on all of my computers some time back, but I still use WD RE4s and 2.5 inch WD Black HDDs for a variety of backup tasks and for storage in which the data will not be accessed for a period longer than is ideal to use a non-powered SSD for. On my Macs I am using El Capitan with OS X Journeled, GUID map, and FileVault 2 encryption. On my SP3 and desktop I am using NTFS with Win 10 64-bit Pro with BitLocker enabled on both machines. The OS and third party programs are currently up to date.

I've generally used ExFAT and the GPT partition map because it allows me to use it on all of my computers, and I have always used the default cluster size. However, I do not think the default size was the best decision for me because the size on disk is over TWICE the actual size.

If I am correct, the default Win 10 cluster size is 4k, and that going BELOW that is useful for the drives I have many smaller files on. Is this correct? Additionally, the smaller cluster size I go, the slower the drive will write, correct? Also, if so, how low do you advise going? I am still torn between reformatting outright or trying one of the programs that allows changes to a currently in-use drive. Any advice? Thanks!

A:Hard drive cluster size issues? Size on HDD over twice the actual size

For the a sector size of 4k to double your disk utilization you'd have to have a really tiny average file size. From your numbers shown the average size if I calculate it correct is 132kb (unless you have 1 massive file and 17,711 tiny ones) so a 4k size will make no difference.

You could check with TreeSize Free - it will tell you if you right click on the status bar and select it to be displayed.

EDIT - having checked the default for ExFat is 128k for drives over 32GB (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/140365) and when I tried to format an external USB drive that is what it picked. According to macbook - Reformat exFat with specific Device Block Size and Cluster Size - Ask Different OSX picks 128k also.

So if you had 128k as your cluster size minimum disk utilization would be 17,772 files * 128k = 2.17GB. So if all your files were just over this (say 132k which looks like your current average size) you would be using 4.44GB add a couple of big files and it could easily be 6GB.

I would check your average file sizes and also your current cluster size (you can use chkdsk as described in the AskDifferent link above).

The default is 4k for NTFS and I have always formatted ExFat as 4k also. Depending on your current setting reformatting 4k looks like a good idea.

As for how - copying the data elsewhere, formatting and then copying it back has to be the easiest, safest and most likely fastest way. You'll also get the disk defragmented automatical... Read more

Am definitely going to have to get an extra fan (room temp. is 78F as I type this at 9:30PM local time, & average CPU temp is 115F, BUT while running InoculateIt Antivirus check (took about 2.5 minutes), CPU temp jumped to 123F (Alarm is at 125F).
Can a exhaust fan be mounted in the circular grill on rear of S500 ATX case and what size would fit in there, and how hard are they to install? With shop prices starting at $40/hr, would like to save that IF possible.
:
Also -- what type fan connector's are used in the MSI6330 M'board? I've seen fans for sale on web with 3 wires, & others with 4. Case has 300W power supply.
:
And considering room temp's during summer hit 95 - 98F, "cooling" to mid-80's or so at nite, how high a cfm reading should I look for in a exhaust fan if one can be installed behind that grill?

A:bios ac power adapter message

If new means less than 21 days from shipment, best would be to call Dell and have the system replaced under the 21-day satisfaction guarantee.
If it's more than 21 days since the system shipped, call Dell to start the warranty repair process.

The link to my motherboard: http://www.zotacusa.com/zotac-h55itx-a-e-lga-1156-mini-itx-wifi-intel-motherboard.html

I was wondering what would be a good power adapter. By the way it must be a mini itx adapter if you haven't noticed yet.

Hi all. I'm semi-reliably informed that my main board is dead.

If my HD survived whatever traumatic event caused the above, I'd like to attempt to salvage some of the data from it. It's a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80GB ATA/133, 3.5 series.

So far, Ive found this adapter which seems like what I'll need to connect the HD to a laptop via USB in order for it to show up as a removable drive from which I can pull files. Note: I don't want to open the laptop & connect directly vice the DVDRW as it's still under warranty.

So, my question is ... what's the power source on the adapter for? Is it in case you want the connected drive to function as a working drive as opposed to just a storage device?

(sorry, no doubt this is a really dumb one, hardware's just not my thing )

Any advice on this specifically, or any general comments on the likelihood of success of this operation, gratefully received. TIA,

bomb
