My boss gave me a laptop Compaq Presario C759LA for factory restoring a few days ago, I was working on Windows and making backups, then I reboot it and it ask me a power on password. I could reboot and enter to BIOS Setup, but I couldn't reset that password if I don't know it. When I enter blank password three times I get one unlock password: The key is 93095941. Is this a bug? Are there a patch fix? Please help!!!!

I have a compaq v2000 wont power up.. I seen the other thread on this subject and check and removed the compasators to check them... Unit will not power up.. I follow the 18V supply off the MB power connector to a 8 pin chip right after PR63 labeled PQ24 .. If Check from Ground to one side of the chip it gets 18V from power. and other side is look like strait through like a power switch (FET)... I tried to find the data sheet and nothing availible. Also showing on the compasitors from the forum
Compaq Presario M2000 Won't Power up
I seem to show a .09 ohm on the positive side of the contact to the other on where one of the caps would sit...
also showing .09 ohms from ground to the positive side of the cap contact on the board with the cap removed.
.09 is close to a short of some sort correct?
I have a Compaq Presario 7RPM11...1.3GHz P4 with 128MB RAMBUS. I rewired the power switch header when replacing the motherboard with another brand (thinking I would never use it again) and forgot to write down the original pinout.
Does anyone know the pinout of the power switch connector on the motherboard. It's labeled J981 and the cable has 189524-001 on the label.
what is the model of the mother board?
I have a Presario 4824 and it powers up sometimes and sometimes it don't. I checked all the connections, everything appears fine. I replaced the Cmos battery and still nothing. I did notice it would power up without the battery and when I tried after installing the battery, no power. I would just replace the pc, but we use it at the Battered Women's Shelter to teach them new skills and there is not enough money in the budget to replace it. Any suggestions?

He said that one day he went to turn on the computer and it wouldn't fire up. I told him to come over to my house and I swapted my battery and still nothing. I then swapped power packs with no fix. I thought it might be a power supply problem or something like that but have not figured out how to open it up without breaking something. Any help would be greatfully appreciated. Chris

I have a Compaq Presario V5000 that won't power up. The fan powers up for just a half second and then shuts down again, but the power light stays on. There is NO post or boot. No screen. Is it worth replacing the motherboard or should I just scrap it?

We bought two Compaq lap tops for our kids at the same time. One has never really held a charge very long on the battery. Battery went completly dead, will not even start with the power cord that still works. Is there an intrenal battery that needs changed?
Did you try removing the battery, yet keeping the adapter plugged in and booting? There is no internal battery - but if the laptop won't start with just the cord, then typically it's a larger hardware issue (motherboard, bad component, etc.)
AC Adaptor has been replaced
DC Jack has been replaced
Things I have tried.
1. Taking out battery and power lead and holding pwr button for 1min
2. Reseating ram
3. Taking CMOS battery out for 10mins
4. Removing Hard Drive
Any suggestions appreciated before I start to strip this laptop down again......

Good day to everybody. i'd like to ask for your advice or opinion re: my computer trouble.
I have a Compaq Presario Desktop (5000 series) who has been consistently having intermittent power on and off problems. I will be able to use it one day, and then the following day, it just wont turn on! I already had it checked by numerous technicians, but they can't seem to find anything wrong with the computer because when they turn it on, the computer powers on. I bring it home and then, a few days after, it just refuses to turn on again!
I had every aspect of the computer checked and observed. Power source is ok. The AVR is new and works when i use it with other devices. RAM is working fine. I dont know what to do anymore! I know something is wrong with it but the technicians can't put their finger on it. I had one technician who told me that the motherboard is short-circuiting with the casing so he put foam/insulator all around! *Sigh, I dont know if that is even possible, not to mention logical...
I hope any of you guys and girls out there could help me out.. I will be extremely grateful for any suggestions that you could give. THank you very much.
could be a problem with the power coming out of the wall..can you connect to a different outlet..

Hello tech guys out there!
I am having this issue with my Compaq Presario R4000. Whenever I have been using my laptop for more than 15-20 min, the ac adapter will not charge propertly. I will keep blinking on the power light as well as the start buttton light. But if I were to turn off the laptop and plug in the AC, it will charge normally again. Any idea what would be causing this issue?
I am thinking it could be motherboard issue that controls the charging but it is really wierd. Anyone had this issue before, please share with me how you resolve it? It might also be the DC port.....
Any comments or suggestion would be appreciated.

Well, I'm guessing power supply here? When I hit the power button, no fan, nothing, just a slight "clicking" noise and the flashing yellow (some say orange) light. From what I've read it sounds like the power supply went belly up. How do I know: 1) which power supply to get to replace this one, and 2) is it worth it? When I power on my Compaq Presario, the screen remains black, the key next to the power button is orange, the Caps Lock key is blinking and a light blinks above the "home, end, num lock keys", in the upper portion of the keyboard. Try re-seating the Ram. If that doesn't help remove the Cmos battery for a few minutes then put it back, it looks like a silver coin and should be visible near the ram.
Newbie to this site, but hope you guys/gals can help me out. I've had this laptop for about 4 years and ironically, the extended warranty ran out only 3 weeks ago.
This evening I turned on the laptop for about 15 mins and noticed the power light indicator was blinking on and off. Soon smoke started to come from the power/network port area and the system immediately shutdown. I immediately pulled the AC adapter out and allowed the system to cool. Upon disassembling the laptop, I could not find any burns on the board near the power/network port area. Is it safe then to turn on the laptop again? Anyway to isolate what caused the problem?
2. The AC Adapter has been problematic for awhile. It appears to be loose and will sometimes cause the laptop to auto shutdown due to loss of power. I often to jiggle this wire to allow it continue to provide power. How do I test if the problem is w/ the pin on the m/board or the external adapter?
3. The battery on the laptop has also not been working on its own for awhle. When ever I pull the battery out, it shows that a little bit of juice on the indicator, but when I remove the adapter and let the laptop run on the battery alone, it shuts down w/in 2-3 minutes. How can I test to see if the battery is still fully functional?
I really don't want to have to take the laptop into a service center so they can screw me over w/ diag costs and unnecessary parts - so any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi, If stringent security was enabled in the bios, there is no way around that - you will need to replace the system board. However, even though you mention you've already tried removing the rtc cell with no luck, make sure you've done it in the following way. Unplug the AC Adapter and remove the main battery. Remove the rtc cell again, then hold down the power button for 1 minute and leave the notebook like this for an hour. Replace the rtc cell, plug-in the AC Adapter but leave the main battery out. Start the notebook. Regards, DP-K1 more replies

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)
If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.
However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.
I bought a used Compaq Armada 7710MT laptop. The seller gave me the login password -- all was well.
Then I decided to reload Windows NT to eliminate the network setup and operate the laptop "stand-alone."
Bad idea! It changed the login! So-o-o, I went into the bios setup and reset the password -- all was well again.
Did a few setup changes, very minor.
Then I shut down.
When I tried to boot up again, well -- all was not well!! I got a "power-on password" request. I went to a Compaq site and it notes that I must remove the case and turn the jumper switch off, and back on, to remedy (delete) the "power-on password" request.
H-e-l-p! Isn't there a quickie way to address this problem???

I have purchased a Compaq Presario 600 with an Athlon XP 2200+ processor. I do not have a copy of Windows XP to wipe it with. Is there any way with the installed XP that I can refresh this system and remove data frome previous owners? Or Can I load Win 98?
Compaqs usually have a hidden partition with all the factory loaded software on it in an image format. As long as it does and you can figure out how to access it you could probable do that - but you almost likely need the XP Product key and may need to reactivate XP after the recovery. XP can only be install on one machine at a time - so if they are still using it you are out of luck.
Watch the boot up for any recovery messages or take a trip to www.Compaq.com and look up the info for your make/model.
I friend of mine purchased this Presario in 2004. She hasn't had internet since about 2006, so she hasn't had any of the updates since then. I brought her tower home with me since I have internet to load her updates. We're trying to get it internet ready. When I brought it home last week nothing would open. So yesterday she gave me the system recovery disc. I started with the Standard Recovery, but there were too many files that it couldn't recover. So I then decided to do a full recovery. After the full recovery it was rebooting and it told me that not all the system could reload and I couldn't hit okaybecause it wouldn't read / acknowledge my mouse. So, I unhooked her computer and rehooked mine to see what her alternatives were. I found a website, they wanted to know all the things it wouldn't oload. All I can remember is that it was things that could me downloaded later like: Norton, AOL, Adobe, MSN, and QuickTime.
So, I unhoked mine and rehooked her's up (and booted up my laptop). When her's came back up it's saying: NTLDR is missing Pres Control + Alt +Delete to Restart
My question for you is there anyway I can save her conputer? She doesn't have a lot of funds, being a singe mother of a 7 yr old and I'm just a good friend trying to help her out.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide

9. (Black screen instead of error message)
then all of after about 20% a big blue screen with following:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. IF this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced startup... Read more
How do you access the Bios on a Compac Presario 4110. I keep getting the message 162 Sytems Options not set. 163 Time and Date not set. Having visited Compac they were not a lot of help. Downloading the software recommeded by them was a waste of time, still got the above message. Tried all the usual keystrokes etc no good. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

ok I hace a compaq that is all messed up. lets see one day the monitor would not work after a storm. Bought another, For a while the screen would be blue but change back to normal. The pc also would have a hard time starting up after it was in idle. We would do a hard start and for a while that worked. Now when I try to start it it turns on but the monitor says no vga/dvi input. There is also none of the preverable beeps that are supposed to be there so in short (well long)the motherboard is fried? So do I use it as a planter in the yard or is there a way to get it up and running. It runs on XP media center it has a micro ATX form factor motherboard it is also an AMD 64 Anthlon. ram is 256 mb 1Rx16 pc 4200 ddr2 533 mhz. With all that said can I just replace the motherboard and reinstall the reinstallation disks and be up and running? ( if it could only be so easy) What about the cpu. i know many questions here thanks for patients. Please help me. Tina
does your system have agp or pciex (or even pci) slot free? Is the graphics on board? It sounds like a graphics card problem, even if it is onboard. I'd try a replacement card (even if it's just a pci card) and see what happens...
My landlady's Compaq Presario SR1103WM is acting up and I'm pretty certain it is the PSU going out because the symptoms are the same as my PC had when it's PSU went belly up on me. It starts booting up fine until Windows XP Home starts loading, than it resets. I used a WinXP disk to repair the boot files and MBR with no effect, so we decided to reinstall Windows (been needing to do that anyway). Before doing that though, I was going to try recovering pictures of her grandkids by using a Linux Live CD, and ran into the same problem with it, so that eliminated Windows problems.
To the best of my knowledge, that leaves the PSU (likely) or the memory (possible) as the probable causes. I running Memtest86+ on it tonight to eliminate that cause.
Please correct me if I'm wrong in my diagnosis or if I am missing anything, but if I'm right about the PSU, that brings me to my main problem. I have heard that many Compaq models have proprietary PSUs so that you can't use off-the-shelf parts to replace them and have to buy one from them at a higher price. Is that the case with this model or can I order one from Newegg? I looked up the PC on Compaq's web site, and it didn't even say what PSU it has.
Thank you in advance.
Memtest86+ has compleated 34 cycles with zero errors. Looks like it is the PSU.

i have apresario 972 its old but good its just a pen. would like to update to a pen.3 or 4 the mother board is a compaq. thats about all i know about it.
Can't be done. It is probably some proprietary motherboard if it's a Pentium. If the motherboard is ATX you might....I said might be able to upgrade to a newer ATX motherboard. You will also need a new Power Supply, processor, memory and possible new graphics adapter.

I have a Compaq Presario 1247 Notebook (laptop) with Windows 98 Second Edition with a 4.3 Gigabyte hard drive that was logically partitioned into 2 drives (C: and D: ). Earlier this year I used my CD Burner to copy all of the Quick Restore files from the D: Drive to a blank CD-ROM (CD-RW) disk and then removed the partition from the hard drive with a program from the Compaq Website. My CD-Burner is connected to my Notebook via a PCMCIA USB 2.0 Card, it has 2 USB Ports on it, one port is being used by my CD-Burner the other port is not being used.
Last Friday (09-24-2004) my Notebook caught a virus while I was on the internet and it was corrupted. MS Windows Explorer error message came up when I tried to look at my hard drive. The error message also came up when I rebooted, therefore no desktop icons appeared. So I reformatted the hard drive C: and put the Quick Recovery CD-ROM Disk in the internal CD-ROM drive. However, the Quick Recovery Disk displayed a message that it could not find the Quick Restore files and to contact Compaq Customer Support. I reformatted my hard drive again this time with the /quick format switch and /make system disk switch and then copied all the files and subdirectories from the Quick Recovery CD to my hard drive. Now before I even tried to run FDISK to repartition my hard drive into 2 logical drives I thought I would put the CD (CD-RW) containing all of the Quick Restore files and subdirectories that I burned earlier this year (before I r... Hi this is my first post so bare with me.
I have a compaq presario 2580us laptop first of all with a pentium 4 in it.
My question is this. My laptop has 3 fans in it and they all used to come on in the past. Only one(the biggest) has been working not sure how long it has just been the one either. My temps get up to around 127F. I am just just wondering if there is a way to check out why the other 2 fans are not working. If there is some setting that I could check that would be great. Any assistance would be so nice.
I did this on a machine at work 2 weeks ago. Check hp.com, do the auto detect thing, and update the bios. should solve the problem.
hope it helps.
I'm making some changes to a compaq presario 4660 (dinosaur) and it's running windows 98. I cannot get into bios. F2, F1, delete and Tab do not get me in. I searched on google and really didn't receive good results. Well it did say that F2 would get me in, but it does not. Seemed to me there was another way to get into bios?
