I turned off my notebook using the mouse and the screen menu. The computer apparently closed down as it should, the screen went black, but the light on the power switch continues to glow. When I try to turn on the computer again, the power switch has become unresponsive. Now I can't turn my computer on. (I don't actually know whether the computer is turned on or off because the screen is black). The notebook has a fixed battery, so I can't do a hard reset by removing it. What should I do?

Can anyone help?

For the past month or so every time I am in the middle of doing something - usually on the Internet - the cursor stops moving and nothing happens when I press the Winkey or CTRL+ALT+DELETE.

I've done several system scans but found nothing. The mouse is built in and not a USB mouse and I am using Vista Home Premium on a Del Inspiron 6400.

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

I have the following notebook.

I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Proffesional x64.
I used the Asus CD to install all Asus stuff. Even the ones I don't need.

My notebook as two graphics cards. The default Intel Onboard card and the more powerful 1GB nVidia GeForce GT425M 1GB video card.
Before the upgrade (which was a clean install) when I played a game (left 4 dead2, call of duty: black ops) the notebook automatically switched from the Intel to the Nvidia graphics card. But it doesn't anymore.
I have read that my notebook used Nvidia Optimus technology to do this.
Although I can't seem to be able to solve the problem.

Hi I recently purchased a Tiny universal adaptor after having left my H.P charger in a different location which meant I was going to be without it for a week or so.The Tiny charger did not pass on any power to the laptop.. I have since got back the H.P charger which came with the laptop, and tried powering it up. Still nothing.  My laptop is one of the B&O line with a non-removable battery. Do I need to claim on the warranty and replace or is there an easy fix? ThanksWill

When switching on, the power button lights up and f12 (wifi light) lights up orange. The caps lock light flashes twice between pauses. The screen does not light up and the computer doesn't seem to respond to anything. I've tried a hard reset to try and fix it but it doesn't seem to have changed anything. It's just over a year old and is used mainly for the internet on trusted sites.

Hello everyone,

It is my first post on that forum, so again - hello.

I do have some problems with my notebook - Acer TimelineX 5820TG with PQI S525 128GB SSD drive as a replacement for the oryginal drive.

After using it for three months, it started not to wake up from sleep, running extremly slow on startup, finally my graphics quality and performance in Starcraft II dramatically decreased to the point when even menu was "crippin".

I did reverted the system to the point after just drivers and Office 2010 were installed (+ skype + avira as well). Everything was running smooth for four days maybe. Again, SC2 got unplayable, and moreover, I have occasional BSODs (twice i think) during the GPU switching from ATI to Intel ( external to internal GPU).

A:Windows 7 64 BSOD on GPU IntelGMA/HD5650 switch - notebook

Hello there, well... i'm not on the BSOD squad but from what i see in the log, the cause of that particular BSOD is the Avira Antivirus and your Graphic Cards...

I also recommend to download the drivers from the manufacturer's website, in your case, go to:

Graphics Drivers & Software

And download the latest drivers for your notebook.

After that, uninstall your current ATI drivers, run Driver Sweeper to remove any leftover from the drivers, reboot and then install the new ones...

I have Windows 7 Professional on my PC. In the first load I had, the PC should automatically detect if the LAN cable was plugged in, turn off the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable was now in use.
Unfortunately, I had to reload my PC, and since then I can't get it to do it again.
So, what I'd like to achieve is this: Have Windows automatically detect when the cable is plugged in, turn of the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable is in use - and, obviously, vice versa.
Can someone tell me what I need to do, please?

A:Have Windows 7 automatically switch to LAN when cable is plugged in and switch to wireless when it's removed

There are two methods can help you.
1. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings> and right click your wired and wireless adapters one at a time to change the properties. Select IPv4, click <Properties>
then click <Advanced>. For each one, clear the "Automatic metric" check box and assign the metric value manually. Setting your wired adapter?s metric value lower than wireless adapter one, such as ?1? for wired adapter and ?2? for wired adapter.

2. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings>,
hold down 'alt' to bring up the "File" menu, select "Advanced", select
"Advanced Settings" from the dropdown menu, adjust the priority of your wired adapter higher than your wireless adapter in the "Advanced Settings" window under the "Adapters and Bindings" tab.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click ?Mark as Answer? on the post that helps you, and to click ?Unmark as Answer? if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

Need to no if I have this right

they have a dsl modem going to a Linksys router to a 24 port switch then to a little 4 port switch. sure, so then Would it be modem to router then router to any port on the big switch or is there an uplink port on the big switch it should go to? then you would hook a cat5e from one of the regular ports on the 24 port switch and run it to the uplink port on the 4 port switch need to no if the whole sequence is right. Hope someone can help, john will told me the cable would go from the big switch to the uplink on the small switch but I am wondering if I have it all right or not and wonderiing about from the router to the 24 port switch does the cable just go in a regular port in the big switch or if there is an uplink port does it go there. Hope you can understand my rambleing here. Thanks (please don't send me to a link) just need to no modem to router to regular port or uplink port on 24 port switch then from regular port on 24 port switch to uplink port on the 4 port switch. Thanks

A:Solved: Windows xp hookup question for modem, router, switch, to switch?

Router to uplink port on 24 port switch, and then normal port on the 24 port switch to uplink port on the second 4 port switch. An auto-MDX port on a device negates the need to worry about uplink ports for that particular cable connection.

I have a wireless router connected to my modem, and ALL PC's connect to that for internet.

I also have a gigabit switch I use to transfer data in between several of the machines. I do it quite often and I don't want it eating up the wifi bandwidth.
I have done it before, but it has been a long time and I cannot remember how I forced internet traffic over the wifi and local traffic through the switch
Is the only way to do it to specifically tell Windows to use the IP address of the LAN connection? I know it will work that way, forcing local traffic directly to that IP, but I seem to remember there being an easier way to do this.

Is it possible to switch off a laptop screen - laptop runs Windows 7 - and prevent it being switched on again, without inputting a password?

I need to keep the laptop running, therefore I can't put it to sleep and logging-off has become a pain.

I've tried the Power Options, but the display comes on again when the mouse is nudged.

I've also tried "Fn + F6" on my Acer laptop, which switches off the screen, but an accidental key press brings it to life again.

Hi everyone, I searched through the forums but couldn't really find what I was looking for.

Currently we have a DHCP server set up to a switch, that has a special line connecting to a switch in our shop which is just across our back lot, giving network access to the few computers over there. They recently put in a new machine that needs network access, but they have already accidentally cut two ethernet cords. I'm looking to provide a wireless solution for the machine, but I don't want to have to spend a few thousand dollars on a large wireless switch.

Can I plug a wireless router into the switch in our shop, and essentially turn it into a wireless bridge, or is there another, simpler way to do this?

If this has already been answered, sorry for missing it!

I thought that I had this all figured out, but my dad just asked me a question about my setup, and I can't answer it.

The setup is like this:
[ip-phones + computers]-->[small switch]-->[managed L2 switch]-->[router]-->[modem]

I have several ip-phones and computers grouped into blocks of 8. Each set of 8 is a medley of phones/computers connected to a small switch

Each of these switches, in turn, will be connected to a managed L2 switch that will create 2 VLANS: One VLAN will contain all of the phones, and the other will contain all of the computers. In turn, each VLAN will have its own router and DSL modem, thereby separating the network traffic.

I know that I can use this L2 switch to make the VLANS based on the MAC addresses of the devices. However, the smaller switches do not support 802.1q [VLANs]. Will it be a problem that the smaller switches do not support VLANs? Essentially, will this setup work to split up network traffic?

Thanks once again,

A:Computer, switch, switch, router, modem

I have the same DELL switch for my phones. You PoE will not carry across the linksys switches, so that is the first problem.
Next are the computers attached to the phones? Or does each device get its own drop?

And whats this about 2 routers and modems? Thats a bit over kill!! QoS would do the trick.

I would run all the devices off the Dell and attach the computers to the Phones (most IP Phones have a passthrough port) Configure the Dell with trunk ports with the Computer VLAN passing untagged traffic making it the native VLAN. While having the phones on a Tagged VLAN(If you phones conig allows you to set the VLAN in its config great! If not you can bind the MAC to the VLAN). The you create a QoS policy giving the VoIP traffic priority!

A problem has recently developed with my Envy notebook.   About 2 weeks ago my entire wireless network began slowing down when on it.   Noticeable on all devices.    When my provider came out, checked and tweaked some issues it appeared to be ok.   I went on with my daughers HP laptop and was drawing 20-24 mbps all over the house. When I reconnected mine to the system I was only pulling 6, 3, 5, up and down.   It doesn't start right away but after a few minutes.   So I put my duaghers right next ot mine and low and behold, when I ran her's it pulled 3 - 6 also.   So I turned my wi-fi off and hers' popped right back up.   I have also tried this with an old XP mini, my i-pads etc.   As soon as mine gets on the network the speed crashes.    This also happens with no one else home and no other devies conncted. I have downloaded the latest up to date Intel driver for this network adapter and it hasn't changed anything. Any ideas?

Bill_Ving Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about wireless networking poor performance and wanted to help. My immediate guess is that you might have mixed-mode networking going on.  This happens when you have two different PCs networking in two different modes -- one using "G", the other using "N".  The wireless router (or access point) can optimize performance for either mode, but not for both.  So, the "G" mode drags down the performance of the "N" mode PC, but even worse, with the router set for mixed modes, it performs more slowly than with either PC connected by itself. Here are some other troubleshooting steps you can try: HP PCs - Troubleshooting Wireless Network and Internet (Windows 8) | HPģ Customer SupportGood Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------Please click "Accept As Solution" on the post that solves your issue to help others find the solution. Please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on the left of the Reply button to say thanks fopr my help.========================================================================

I made a Google notebook to keep the minutes of a meeting my business partners and I held last weekend. I made them all collaborators on the notebook so they could all make any changes or annotations they felt necessary. However, when they go to access this notebook they are prompted for a password.

There is nowhere (at least that I can find) to even choose to password protect the notebook let alone change the password. I'm pretty confused as to what password the notebook could be. The only thing I can think of is that it's asking for the password to my gmail account, which I don't really want to be handing out. Any ideas on this one gang?

We are moving to a new office location. The guys who will be setting our network is proposing the following equipment:

1. 3Com 24-port 10/100 mbps switch
2. 24-port Patch panel
3. 6u data cabinet
4. 1u cable management

The new office will be a 2-floor building with around 40 computers. I asked some of my friends who are more expert on network setup and told me typical switch (Linksys, Cisco) will do if we need to save some money.

What do you think? Thanks a lot!

A:Is 3Com 24-switch necessary or typical switch will do?

Well, first off, I'd be specifying a gigabit switch for expandability, I can't see investing in a 10/100 switch in 2010! If you don't need a managed switch, or need to save money initially, and unmanaged switch will probably be significantly cheaper.

In point of fact, if you want to go really cheap, you can get away for less than $100! switch&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20

I understand that a hub is more like a party line, where all devices hear and read data before sending it to next port, and a switch is advanced hub. But, what is a router. I know what a wireless router is, but they say a router is more advanced than a switch. Can you buy a non-wireless router?

Also, can you connect 2 switches together? So, Modem-----to Switch----to Switch----Computer

And both switches have other devices connected?

A:Hub vs Switch vs Router/ 2 Switch Story

you CAN buy a non-wireless router--but--the two I found on Amazon were only 10/100 (most modern systems use gigabit ethernet 10/100/1000) but wired are generally cheaper than a wireless router(the Cisco below is NOT cheap)--however--it's not necessary to use the wireless part of the wireless router as most have at least 4 ports (wired).

Yes you can connect switches together but they won't allow for multiple computers to connect to the Internet (at least not easily nor in a way that makes sense).

What devices are you trying to connect together?

The problem is now I have 3069 mb physical memory and ONLY 209 mb Kernal Memory!!! so I used the "bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa" and bcedit said it worked successfuly so i restart my pc and it STILL had the same memory! so right now im stuck with only 209 mb Kernal memory! any ideas on how to fix this? I looked all over google and found nothing. Should I keep these settings or try and fix it?how do i fix it?

New here and so I hope that I am posting in the correct place.
My new notebook an M50-MX5 was in the warranty depot as we thought it had a dvd burning problem, however that was not the case; it was the media.

Anyway before it was sent into the toshiba warranty depot the level 2 tech phone support said to get the computer to be like it was when I unboxed it 2 days earlier, this was last month.
And so to my frustration all of my programs were removed, however before doing this the software techie at the office Ghosted it to my Western Digital Storage Unit and then sent it off to the Warranty Depot.

While it was in the shop I used my 3 yr old toshiba satellite 2410 which I am now typing on at this moment.
I was finally able to get the software tech from the office to reGhost my new toshiba M50 on this past Saturday and left it with him for a couple of hrs and then returned to pick it up as there was not much in the way of programs on it and so it wouldn't take long to Ghost the Images back.

Well, in my Western Digital Storage unit are Ghosts of this 3 year old satellite that I am presently using.
After the techie got my Restore Disk installed and tried to reGhost the image onto the New M50, it crashed.

He was using the wrong Ghost, he was using the one that was from this unit???
I was not happy, especially after he claimed that he now had it Ghosted with the proper Image and I tried it out and it was very sloooooow to Boot. He said it was my Norton 2006.

Something you might want to try (it's a pita) is a repair of windows - this may fix some of the slowness issues you're seeing. The install program he's talking about is probably the U3 component of many larger USB pen drives. I think it's on most of Sandisk's newer large drives. A repair of windows might also take care of this. I seriously doubt that putting the wrong image on the machine and then putting another image on could do any damage to the machine itself - the folks here at my job do it all the time.

We've got a desktop hooked into a linksys B router, and a notebook that accesses the internet wirelessly thru that router. lately we havent been able to get a decent connection with the notebook, and if we've gotten any at all, it gets dropped soon. is the desktop getting the majority of the bandwidth, which is eliminating the notebook from getting enough? if so, is there anyway to limit the amount that the desktop is getting?

My own notebook (Asus EEE PC S101), running Windows XP service pack 3) was twice redirected to an unknown website when I wanted to visit the Guardian newspaper website. I was using IE version 8. Then the notebook froze. When this happened, I had to switch it off without using Cleanup, which I have used safely for a long time. When I had switched it on again, I used Firefox to go to the Techsupport Forum. I followed the instructions to download dds.scr and began running it. Then the notebook froze again. It still tells me "Two logs shall be created on your desktop" Now the cursor does not move any more either. I write this from another notebook, but I cannot create a logfile,m as everything is frozen on my own notebook. Help, please,

My wife has a two-year-old Samsung notebook. Recently when she unplugged it the machine cut off, even though the battery said 79% charged (it wouldn't charge any further). I figured that the battery was bad so I bought another one from Amazon.

This one charges to 100% percent and does exactly the same thing. I'm perplexed but think there's something going on with the motherboard that won't let it use battery juice, even if Windows 8.1 says it's 100% charged.

I've tried the hold the power button down for 1 min with the battery out trick to no avail.

Any ideas? I'm stumped and think I might need to get her another notebook.

Thanks, Robert

I've searched the forum and could not find an answer to this problem.

I have a Windows 7 Enterprise machine where at the login screen the "Switch User" button is missing and so I am unable to clear the last user.

Just about all the results I got back on this topic was how to re-enable the "Switch User". This doesn't help because I can't login to make the change.

I am about to add 3 new servers into an existing network, which is currently all on 1gbps ethernet. All of the new servers are SSD-based and to me it makes sense to go with 10gbps coming out of the servers into a switch, and then 1gbps out to the workstations.

The new server location is about 200 feet from the existing networking equipment/old server location, so using Cat 6A/Cat 7 copper would be REALLY nice/economical.

Where I am hitting a jam is any 48 port gigabit + 4 10gbps switch is $$$.

I am trying to find a small 10gbps copper switch, say an 8 port, that is expandable, and compatible with a 48 port 1gbps switch. Does such a thing exist?

Hi - I am having to extend my network and want to use 2 switches. Current one is a Belkin 5 port 10/100. Now thinking of buying the:

Belkin 8 port 10/100 (F5D5513Iuk8) or
Netgear 8 port 10/100 (FS608) or
Netgear Prosafe 8 port 10/100 (FS108).

Which is the best one to get (I realise the Netgear Prosafe is normally more expensive but I can get it at the same price as the Belkin)?

Could anybody also advise if the second switch will provide as much speed (bandwidth, I think) to the PCs it supplies (3) as the first one which will be linked to my router and 3 PCs and a couple of printers. I would really appreciate any advice you can give - I have spent ages Googling this question and am still not clear.

Many thanks

Hello. I currently have a home network as follows.

3 PC's connected to router.
router connected to cable modem.

I would like to increase the througput on my LAN (amongst the 3 pc's) so I'm thinking about adding a switch such that it would be [3pc's->switch->router-cable modem]. I was wondering whether adding the switch would actually improve the LAN thoroughput or is this just adding unnecessarily repetetive. I am aware of the "7 layers of the osi model" of networking but am wondering whether switches and routers work on the same layers. Im assuming NO because router bases routing based on IP address while switch will deal with the MAC addresses (am i correct???). Since a switch will perform less inspections on the packets (IP filtering, SPI, etc..) am I going to get better results when adding the switch??

BTW, my router: SMC2804WBR
Switch i might add: Gigafast Mini Switch EZ500-S

A:To switch or not to switch? That is the question.

Your router has a 100Mbit switch in it so unless you are getting a gigabit switch and your PCs have gigabit interfaces you will get no significant boost in network speed.

You may get a small speed inrease if you buy a good 100Mbit switch - the ones integrated in home routers tend to be the bottom of the barrel type - this will give you some extra under very high loads.

What is a "good" switch? You would want something with crossbar fabric and/or cut-through packet forwarding (those are expensive).

The router I have is a Netgear RO318.

What are the pros and cons of leaving Windows 2000 on indefinitely?
Also, will this affect the wear of my monitor? Should that be switched off separately and the system left running?

Win2K is certainly very much more stable than 98, and hasn't crashed since I had it installed.

I am in the process of setting up a pretty extensive gigabit network in my home. I have the new D-Link DIR-655 Pre-N Router with four gigabit ports and I am using all four to run to 8-port D-Link unmanaged switches in four locations. The first location is right next to the router. I have a fifth location. I searched hard for an 8-port wired gigabit router. If I had found one (at a reasonable price) I would use it as the base in from the modem then use the D-Link for wireless only (no routing). Alas ... I was unable to find one and so I am wondering if there are any issues running from a switch to another switch.

A:Router to switch to switch?

Only issue is a slight impariment in speed as it passes thru two switches and the router . . You may not be able to decerne it.

So I just bought a KVM Switch mini size, the guy at the store told me that it would do the trick. The trick meaning that I would be able to switch between the Xbox 360 and the PC with no problems, at first I had a lot of trouble getting it to work until I realised that I had forgotten to plug the keyboard cable into the KVM Switch. At least I managed to get things to work... A bit.
The problem is that I manage to switch between the PC and the 360, but once I've switched to the 360 it immediately goes back to the PC. I've checked everything in the manual and I'm doing it "right" as far as I know:
"7. Switch between the computers (PC1 and PC2) by pressing the 'Select' button on the front panel.

Use the 'Hot Key' command on the keyboard. Press [Scroll Lock] quickly twice and then [1] or [2] to switch between computer 1 and computer 2."

Whenever I do this the KVM Switch beeps, switches to the 360 then back to the PC, could anyone please give me a hand?

New to forums & Vista.

Have a Asus x83vb-1 Laptop - t5800 - 4g 5300 ddr2 - Nvidia 9300m GS.

I really do not have a real need for the x64. I want to run games that do not require x64.

Also can you turn off DX10 for DX10 games to improve performace - run them from a DX9 instead.

All bells a whistles aside - I am gonna streamline this system and I don't need the added junk bogging my cycles down.

IMO XP Pro x32 would do it for me and if possible I will reformat the HD completly without voiding warranty.

I really don't need it for what I want to do.

It came pre-installed from Asus.

There is not alot of support in gaming to warrant the DX10 or the x64 yet and this is not the best gaming laptop. I only spent $650 for the rig couldn't pass it up for that price.

Any and all help TIA,

A:Can you switch between 32 & 64 bit

I want to set it up so the connection goes from my modem to feed either a "Switch" or "Hub" which will then feed the mounted boxes in every room, and the wireless router. I would like to be able to take my laptop anywhere in the house and use it either wirelessly or just plug into the box.

Hello, I am trying to use my new SATA HDD inside a USB case and have it as an external drive to my laptop. I have initialised the drive in Computer Management and formatted/given it a letter. However, on subsequent bootups, it will not start when my Windows XP SP2 starts up, and for it to appear in Computer Management/My Computer/Device Manager I have to switch off the power then switch it back on.

When I go to my BIOS setup and look under Hard Drives, my internal drive and also my other external HDD (PATA, exclosed in another USB case), but it will not recognise my new drive. I believe this to be something to do with it.

I have the latest version of my chipset and I have since flashed my BIOS with the latest version off the Acer website (my laptop's brand). It's annoying, because I can get my new ext drive to work, but I can't get it to initialise when Windows boots.

I have tried to look for a newer BIOS version (Phoenix) that the one off the Acer website, because I don't trust that they bother checking for newer BIOS/Drivers, but to no avail, unless I want to pay £30 to for a new BIOS, which I don't.

Can anyone suggest what/where the problem might be?

I would like to use this on a switcher so I can have it connected to both my computer and my media player (Popcorn Hour A-110) and not have to plug and unplug cables. This way I can copy files from my computer to the hd's, then switch and play the files from the hd's on the media player. Then when I power off the media player the tower bay will shut down also.

However, the tower bay doesn't shut down when I have it connected to my current switch. It will only shut down when directly connected to the media player. Is there a switch that would work for this? So when I have the switch set to the media player and shut down the media player, the tower bay will also shut down?

your IP address is not related to any GAME issue; you need to port forward
from the router to the IPaddress of your system using the port required for the game.

The ISP will support two kinds of addresses; dynamic and static.

you pay extra for a static ip by registring a domain-name. the name then
has a 1-1 relationship to a specific ip-address. NO ONE, changes the static
address associated with the originating ip-address.

the dynamic ip-address is sufficient for all CLIENT systems and if you wish to

Quite often, this is a heat problem. What kind of computer do you have? Laptop, desktop? Is it a Pentium or AMD? (Or something else?) Some details would help so we can tell you where to look. But if you haven't cleaned the interior of your computer (or had it cleaned) dust can build up and block air flow on the processor's heat sink. Also, a cooling fan may be dying or dead.

It could also be a memory problem, but let's find out some more information first.

You want a switch. A hub is half duplex and one transmission at a time so it slows network traffic considerably.

The router in my home is connected to a large Linksys switch, which distributes ethernet throughout the household rooms. In my livingroom, I have found that I require more ethernet ports, so I added a Dlink 5-port 10/100 DES-1005E. The Xbox and denon receiver i have connected to the dlink can't access the internet. If I connect them directly to the wall ethernet port, It has no problem. I have been doing a bit of reading and come to the conclusion that I need a cross-over cable from the wall port and the added this true? Am I on the right trak or? I tink this should be straight forward, but for some reason, my devices can't seem to access through this second switch....ugh...

Any help or direction would be appreciated

A:Switch to Switch

You shouldn't need to use a crossover cable. According to the specs for the DES-1005E, it supports MDI/MDI-X negotiation which takes care of flipping the send/receive pairs automatically. Without knowing what your Linksys switch is, it's hard to say what is going on here. But even if your Linksys switch doesn't support MDI/MDI-X, a straight through cable should still work with the DES doing the auto negotiation. You may want to try a different cable.

A:How do I switch my (c:) with (d:)?

I caught the first part of that but you lost me in the end.

Are you trying to say you want the "C" drive to have 127GB and the "D" drive to have 76.4GB?

First of all make sure your "D" drive has at least 51GB-52GB free space still on it. You can right click the "D" drive in "My computer" and go to property to see how much you have left.

Then download GPARTED from here.
This one brings you right to the download:

Get the latest version.

Then once its installed and running have a nice read.

Another way to do this is by reformatting the computer but this will erase everything on your computer.

And no, your computer will not slow down unless your hard drive is fragmented, it will increase startup and shutdown times though.

Now Win8 is out and the very first day I can get essentially the same laptop for a few bucks less. And I imagine there will be even more deals.

I really thought Win8 suits itself better to touchscreen and of course this laptop doesn't have it and I understand not many do at this point and those that do certainly won't be low priced.

So would anyone here buy the Win 8 computer?

I am trying to enable the 3gb switch to allow photoshop and other programs to access more memory.

I have 4gb installed.

When trying to set increaseuserva in bcdedit the following occurs:

"an error occurred while attempting to reference the specified entry.
The system cannot find the file specified"

I also downloaded EasyBCD but it says it cannot find boot.ini file. But there isnt one in windows 7?

Not sure what to do next.

Thanks in advance.

Are you running 32 bit or 64 bit OS? If it is a 32 bit OS then you will most likely be able to only use around 3gb of your 4 gb. Here is a link for more info.

Hi, I have 3 computers in our house. An Athlon XP 2000 (512K DDR 2700), an Athlon 550 and a 233 IBM laptop. All are networked and running WIN98se. The XP 2000 machine is about 3 months old and Iíve noticed that it is not as stable as the older machines. Sometimes it freezes and sometimes I get Ďprogram not respondingí during shut down. Itís not a major problem, just an annoyance, but I wonder why the XP machine is less stable than the others?

Iím thinking of upgrading the Operating systems of all of the machines, but Iím not sure to what. Windows XP seems like the logical choice, but Iíve heard that you canít load it on more that one machine. I want to be able to install the new OS on all 3 machines without having to buy 3 copie$$$. I donít know that much about Windows 2000 Pro. Is it limited to only one machine also? Iíve heard to stay away from Windows ME.

Can anyone give me a suggestion? Thanks.

hey all, i have been using a 2 port kvm for months now. i have never had any problems with it till yesterday. normally i am bouncing between 2 windows xp boxes. i recently acquired an old dell 400 xps with a 40 gig drive. it appears to have an after market video card in it. anyway, i installed ubuntu linux on it and it runs great, but i have to unplug the video connector on the linux box for my windows box to work. i hooked the plug back up to my other windows xp box and the switch is fine again. could the video card be doing something to make the kvm mess up? thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Tried various other linux same problem until I tried Suse 10.1, seems to work ok

Hi guys

My first post here and I'm seeking help!

My PC has been working fine for months (since new).

It has an Aopen AK86Lmotherboard with an AMD Athlon 64 3200 processor.

I was using my PC this morning and it just switched off! I thought there hd been a power break but no.

I tried switching the PC back on, there was a quick flash of the power LED but that was it - NOTHING.

I removed the side panel and noticed a red LED on the motherboard was illuminated.

I tried to switch the PC on again, the power LED flashed and the CPU fan twitched but that's about it!

I thought it was likely to be a power supply problem so I replaced the power supply with a new one, made off all the connections correctly, connected the mains power lead, the red LED on the motherboard illuminated. I switched on from the front panel switch. Once again, the power LED flashed and the CPU fan twitched, but that was it - the red LED on the motherboard remained lit.

Any ideas guys?

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Since a new psu hasn`t solved your problem, I`m afraid it looks like your mobo has died.

Maybe your other psu went bad and took out the mobo, it`s not uncommon.

I have a 2-Port KVM Switch (belkin) attached to my 2 pc's using 1 monitor, keyboard and mouse. I have had this setup for about 2 years, working fine all this time. Now all of a sudden when pc1 is on, the monitor blinks a couple of times and goes out, if I switch to pc 2 the monitor is fine. If I remove the kvm switch and go straight into pc1 the monitor works fine, but not if attached to the kvm switch. I spoke to belkin and they are at a lost, they sent a new kvm switch, but nothing changes. Any suggestions? It is a real hassle climbing under my desk to change plugs. Thanks!

Hello All,

I am looking for an internal IDE switch for switching more then one hard
drive into an IDE cable at different times. Any help would be very appreciated.
This can be an A-B switch, A-B-C switch or A-B-C-D switch . Active switch
would be nice, but I know the price can be prohibitive.

This may seem strange to you but here goes..

Im going to buya new cpu. It has the Same OS and set up as my computer. However I want to take my HD from my cpu and put it into the new cpu as the primary HD.

"WITHOUT" any data loss.

I have never installed a HD or even switched a HD before. I want My original HD to be the primary, and the HD that comes with the new CPU to be the slave.

My questions to you guys are simple... what do i have to do exactly to get it to work properly? They both have "C:" drives which i know will have to be changed but ive never done that before. Ive never done much in the lines of building and setting up CPU's.

If the New CPU doesnt come with a XP disc, how would i go about setting it all up to run like my old CPU with an extra HD in it?

Please try and explain things in a noobie language so i wont screw anything up.

A:HD Switch

In very simple terms, you shouldn't do that.

Simply changing the "new PC" to boot from the "Old PC" HD will cause the new PC to crash or badly malfunction. The usual effect is that you get a shutdown during the bootup, to prevent damage to the new hardware.

This is because the new PC will have different hardware to that which existed when the old XP HD install was done, and it will be "force feeding" all the wrong driver code to the new PC motherboard, chaos will reign.

Apart from that you simply set the "new" HD jumper to "Slave" and leave the "old" one as "Master", connect them to the same IDE (flat ribbon cable) - assuming the "new PC" does not have the later SATA drive cable...

We really have no info on your hardware so its all a guess.

But please don't even consider doing what you suggest, unless both old and new motherboards and CPUs were identical.
