The right hinge broke on my ENVY m6. Now the left one is about to go. The waranty is up and I have noticed that this is a common problem with this product. I should hope that there has been a recall on this. HP should at least repair the issue free of charge (waranty or no waranty). I take great care of my things and my computer is no exception. Please give me advice on this one. I am extremely disappointed at this point.

Hey Support!  I have an HP Envy Touchsmart 15, and like so many others on here, my hinges have blown out.  I'm up and running but I can't touch my screen or move the laptop or I get a ?fan error? and the laptop shuts down.  This is an adult owned laptop that sits on my desk at home, and I have never dropped it.  Heck, I can count on one hand the number of times that I've moved it from my desk to my table.  As you know there are about 200,000 other posts on the HP forum with other customers having the same issue.   Please contact me ASAP so we can get the ball rolling.   Thanks, Eric

Hi, recently my right hinge broke off completely. The plastic of the hinge fell off and now the metal as well as a cord is visable clearly. Every time I try to close it, it begins to tilt and doesn't completely close at all. This has been affecting the way the screen holds up on its own and the way that I try to adjust my screen. The hinge became a bigger problem when the screen and the plastic cover of the screen is starting to come apart. I would like to replace this as soon as possible if HP can repair this at all. Please let me know as fast as possible and how I can send it to HP to repair as well as the cost. Thank you.

Hello, I too have a problem with my two year old HP Envy computer's hinge.  I have had several HP products over the years and this is the first repair issue I've encountered.  A local repairman said that, to repair the hinge, he would have to disassemble the computer and replace the keyboard. Hopefully someone at HP can offer a solution that doesn't sound so expensive.

Hello,  I too have had the hinge on my Envy suddenly crack open. No falls, drops, or damage. Everything works fine except for this hinge that just bulged out. What worries me is that this seems to be a popular problem, yet no recall has been made to fix it that I am aware of, and now that my Envy is more than a year old. I will be have to pay for a repair that seems to be somehow common. I would LOVE to hear that HP is standing behind their product and making things right with their customers??? Thanks for your consideration. From a Btech Computer science student.HP Envy m6 Also please make sure that this problem doesn't repeat in new laptops. Found on the forums that this is apparently a common problem with this line of HP laptops.  My computer is less than two years old and has no other issues, however I am concerned that the broken hinge can lead to other issues such as keyboard malfunction, etc.  I do not abuse my computer and it has never been dropped.  I want to have the hinge repaired, but don't think I should be charged for the repair if HP knows it is a common issue and is occuring through no fault of my own.  How do I get this resolved? Becky

A hinge of my Acer S7 191 broke. I showed it to a few local repair shops and they said the whole display unit will have to be replaced. It will be an extremely expensive repair, not least because I imported the laptop and there are no easily available replacement parts for it in Brazil, but I can order parts from the UK and have a friend bring it to me next month. What piece do I have to buy? The whole display unit, or is there a cheaper alternative? Also, can the hinge be repaired by soldering or gluing it? (I don't care if it looks ugly, as long as it works and doesn't cost a kidney)

Here's a set of hinges from the UK. They won't be heavy and should be able to be packed into a small package.I don't know if shipping would be a kidney.http://www.ukpcspares.com/acer-aspire-s7191-lcd-hinges-p-123808.html

I bought my laptop in December 2014, then in November 2015 I remember opening my laptop and hearing a crack and the right hinge snapped.  When I brought the issue up to HP they repaired it as it was under warranty.  Since then I have taken extra care of my latop, and then today I heard the same snap, this time from the other hinge on the left side.  Now my warranty is expired, but this is upsetting because of the faulty hinges on my laptop from HP.

Hi all,  My laptop is less than 2 years old and the right hinge is starting to break, its pulling the screen away from the back of the laptop and clunks, the left hinge is starting to break as well - although not as bad. I've read around and it seems to be a recurring issue, my brother has the same laptop and had to replace it after around 18 months due to a nearly identical  issue. The warranty isn't valid anymore, I don't want to replace the laptop as it is perfect other than the hinge problem. Did anyone have any ideas on repair costs as I would like to get the problem resolved before it does some serious damage to the laptop or whether HP offer some support on this?  Regards, Ross

I recently got a Yoga 3 Pro about a week ago and noticed today that I'm missing one of the 4 round left hinge end caps (I don't know what else to call them.)  I tried to remove one of the others beside the post with my fingernail and it slid right off!  Is there a way I can get a replacement for the missing one, please?  I've looked everywhere such as ebay and a general google search for parts, with no luck, and it's a horrible feeling to have a week old laptop missing a piece already!      Thanks!

I recommend contacting Lenovo Service. You can ask them to mail you one.

In researching this issue for treed20, I spoke to a number of teams.

Conclusion: if you are missing a hinge end cap on a Yoga 3 Pro, please contact Lenovo Service for support. There is no CRU or FRU for hinge end caps, so the entire hinge will need to be replaced. (EDIT 4/21/15)

Hi This is about the back cover below the left hinge which pops out around 4 to 5 mm when laptop is opened or closed. After checking, it seems that the back cover area that supports the left hinge is very weak and damages easily. I always thought that every laptop maker has tests which certifies how well a laptop deals with continuous opening and closing. Obviously corners have been cut and quality control have not been vigilant. With the number of complaints this has, HP should do an unconditional recall to redeem their name. I was considering getting a Spectre for my wife but now I have doubts about thier quality and customer focus.

Hi,I have a Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro. I am having some troubles and would like to find a solution. On the hinge of my laptop the end caps keep coming out. There is no physical damage at all. It seems like a manufacture defect because other people are also having this trouble. I continuously put them back in as the fall out. Only the end caps near the charging port on the left side are falling apart. This has been happening for months now. I contacted Lenovo customer service only to find myself being transferred multiple times and reach no conclusion. Is their an easy fix where Lenovo services my laptop and fixes the issue free of charge since my laptop is still under warranty. If so how would I go about doing that. Thanks in advance, Adil D.

I purchased a DV7 ? 7030us, on July 3, 2012 from Amazon.com.  A few months after the warranty period was over I began experiencing problems with the hinges.  That problem continued to progress to the point where the left hinge is now entirely out of the case and it is apparent that the right hinge will soon follow.  I can provide photos.  I did a bit of research on the web and found that hinge problems are common with models of this type but that there has not been a recall, nor has a general warranty extension been issued by HP.  My previous laptop was also an HP, a DV9920, and it too had hinge failure, to the degree that I purchased aftermarket hinges and made the repair myself.  Ultimately that computer was retired because the power connection failed.  It is surprising to me that a company of the size and sophistication of HP would not have addressed the hinge issues long before this.  I have owned many HP products over the years, mostly printers, and found them to be of good quality; but I would like you to provide me with appropriate relief for the current hinge problem, by which I mean that the laptop should be returned to you for repair at your expense. Please contact me with your proposed solution.  Regards, Thomas J. I received my laptop from the HP repair facility in Texas today.  They replaced the upper and lower case, the fan and heat sink, and provided me with a new battery.  Everything is clean and in good working order.  I hope that the underlying problem of the connection of the hinge to the case has been resolved in manufacturing and that the problem will not repeat. Once the process was initiated by an HP person on this site things moved very swiftly and professionally.  I would like to thank HP for standing behind their gear and returning my computer to a useful condition. I do not know how to mark this as Solved, and perhaps it is not up to me to do so but in my mind it is, indeed, solved.

Just this morning the left hinge on it has started to make 1 loud click every time the laptop is opened. There's no crushing or cracking sound, but the hinge is very noticeably weaker.
I still have a warranty on it, so I'm not real willing to open it. Is there anything I can do to retighten the hinge aside from sending it out? It takes so long to get it back, and I'm moving overseas within the next 8 weeks...

I have been dealing with a broken home on my laptop for more than a year. I just searched these forums and found ~70 posts all with the same issue. This seems to be due to poor design that never should have made it past the quality assurance engineers, having a metal hinge screwed into non-reinforced plastic. I find it reprehensible that a premium laptop was made so poorly. I am told by local PC repair shops that it will cost me $400+ to get this fixed. That's 1/3 what I paid for the machine in the first place.I tried calling support and was directed to log onto the support site for assistance, from which I was directed to search the forums. I thought HP made better products than this, but hadn't wanted to put up the money to get one to find out. Then I bit the bullet and got rewarded with a busted hinge on a laptop that spends its days being used by my wife at home, bring opened and closed 2-3 times per day. And now it seems like I'm going to get the runaround to get this fixed, or just have to trash an otherwise great machine due to crappy hinges. I love this laptop as far as performance and hardware specs go but it is a pain to open and close to try and avoid breaking the other hinge and essentially removing the screen.Any guidance on what I can do to get an actual answer or a case submitted to get any useful help?

One of the hinge that allows the laptop rotate 360 degrees is no longer working property.  The bottom half of the hinge that connects to the keyboard side is no longer rotating property. I suspect there is not enough lube or the thread is borken.  Since the hinge is not rotating correctly, there is a difference in spacing between the screen and keyboard half of the laptop, causing the two of sometimes grind against one another.  I have to physically try to rotate the angle of the bottom half of the hinge to match the working side, but this is not an easy task which shouldn?t be a problem in the first place.  Now I love the Specte X360 when it is working and was planning buying one for my fiancé (trying to convert her over to PC from MAC), but this is seriously giving me second thoughts on the quality of HP Spectre 360.   My question is does the hinge needs occasional lubing for it to work properly?  Has there been testing (qualification) on these hinges?  If so, how many cycles?  Is there a video or manual on how to disassemble the hinge?  I am an engineer and do failure analysis for a living, so I am somewhat interested the failure mode.  Plus, this was a very expensive computer and I would rather not have to spend more money if I am able to fix this myself.  Anyways, I don't know if it's my bad luck or HP is very 'good' with its warranty...  Usage Info:Laptop is ... Apparently this is a common issue/design flaw, but the hinge on my laptop is badly broken. I took it to a PC repair place and they said that I could either buy a new one or replace the whole screen. The problem is, the laptop's warranty ran out 6 months ago. It broke over a month ago with regular usage and it's just incredible that there wasn't some kind of recall notice on such a blatant design flaw.  Is there anything I can do to get this fixed without shelling out hundreds of dollars? I can't accept that this is just one of those "sit back and take it" things, otherwise there would be a huge amount of lawsuits.

Broken hinge left hinge and bottom case is popping off. We're can I get this fixed? Disappointed hp customer. Bought this at Best Buy and got the extended warranty. Of course that expired 3 weeks ago and my hinge just broke. I have only moved this computer from my desk a handful of times. For $1000 dollars I thought I was getting something that would last. This is my first laptop. Do they all have hinge problems? Is it worth fixing? Should I take this back to bestbuy for repair?

One of the hinges is stuck on my Pavilion 15. It's out of warranty, and probably not worth paying much more than $100 to repair, but maybe someone here can guide me to how to unjam it without killing the laptop?

My wife has been battling using her M7 Envy since the left hinge went bad. Long story short we went out yesterday and got her and New Envy 360. She will open up work on 1 to 3 PCs/Laptops by the way. With the additon of the 360, she can keep up to speed while I look into fixing it now....I have already noticed that the M6 users have been able to get them fixed. I need to see what can be done to fix the hinge.(Hoping for a moderator to hop in at this point and guide this old whitebox OEM on);-)Thanks in advance!

I bought this laptop about 2 years back and while it was under warrenty had to have it fixed because of issues with the hinge, which, I understand is a common problem for the envies. After a year and a half of very delicate care and no longer under warrenty, the hinge is once again breaking down and likely to become completely unusable again. I called tech support about the issue and was told that repairs would now cost 250 dollars, which is, frankly, unacceptable. I really like this laptop, but this issue with the hinge has been a constant headache. I, like another who I saw post about this issue, would love to see HP stand behind their product and have this mistake in production taken care of.

Very disappointed with hp 15-g092sa notebook I purchased on the 16/10/14. Hinge broke for no apparent reason.  Now if I close the lap top the back starts coming apart exposing wires etc.  I took great care regard the usage of this lap top, handling it with kid gloves so really I am so disappointed with this product. As my warranty is out I have send it to local repair shop. The owner contacted me saying he was having difficulty in locating my part so I have rung hp and tried the web site (which is confusing to locate parts) but no luck.  I need the hinge plus back.

When I open/close the laptop I feel the left back side shifting.  It looks like the hinge is shifting and then separating part of the upper case from the lower case.   I can push the pieces back in place but the next time I open/close the case the same thing happens.   I received the laptop in April 2014.  What steps do I need to take to get this repaired under warranty.  This is a HP ENVY 17t Quad TouchSmart Product number: E2E11AV. Thanks!!

I've had the G50-80 for not even a year and I've been noticing a lot of problems with my laptop. I use this laptop as a desktop so it stays on my desk (15 inch). Here are some problems that have been occurring: Screws keep falling outWhen I open the laptop, the case gets caught (Hinge is now loose and caused a bright blob on the screen)Track pad moves randomly and zooms in/out randomlyBattery is really weakMy main concern is regarding the hinge. Whenever I open my laptop the screen's case lifts the bottom case apart. Due to this, I contacted Lenovo but they said that the warranty did not cover exterior damages. It's really disappointing and frustrating to see my laptop go through all these problems even when I take excellent care of the laptop. What should I do? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I purchased an Aspire V5-571 laptop in June 2013. The left side hinge has started to come loose, pulling the bottom half of the laptop away from the top half. As a result of this, the loose hinge has cracked the screen and the touch screen now no longer works. No damage has been done to the laptop, it has just been subject to normal use. Is this a common problem with the V5? Is it something that can be easily repaired? Happy to provide any more details if required.

Can't see any wires but I can't particulary close the lid now as I feel it will just snap and break the screen completely. No idea how this has happened as I was opening the lid as normal, but it seems to be a common problem with the Sleekbook unfortuntely. What are my option's to have this repaired as this is clearly a design fault with the laptop.

Dear Acer,Unfortunately, I've begun to notice my right display hinge coming loose on my C720 4GB. When I push down on it, it makes a noticeable snapping noise. Your company has built an amazing product, however its build quality suffers dramatically by simple design flaws such as this. I have never dropped my chromebook and besides normal-light wear and tear, the chromebook is in superb condition. However, after approximately only a year and half of use, has begun to literally fall apart.I understand laptop hinges have been an issue for 20+ years as noted by Acer technician Acer-Blayn here: http://community.acer.com/t5/Legacy-Laptops-and-Netbooks/Acer-laptop-LEFT-side-Screen-hinge-Problem/... and yet this design flaw continues to exist 20 years later! One would think, if this design flaw has continously been an issue, would be addressed in all models, especially those marketed towards a lower income demographic. Acer, you have built a great product but why do I have to purchase another one after a year and half of use...

A:C720 hinge failure

Hi jso92,

I'm sorry to hear that you're running into issues with hinge. I can certainly understand the frustration, however, as Blayn mentioned hinges have been failing on clamshell notebooks for as long as they've been built, and that's not just related to Acer. Unfortunately, the hinge is the weak point in a folding process that also has to be a hollow enough to allow for wires to pass through and not krinkle them. They take all the stress created when opening the device, but it also has to be capable of moving to allow anyone (think children) to open it. I know we've continued to make improvements and modifications to the way hinges work, but if someone was to come up with a way to prevent hinges from failing the way they've done in the past, they would extremely wealthy.

We do have repair options available if you're interested in those, it may be more viable than having to entirely replace the unit.

Thanks,Cory

Just throwing my hat in the ring for another PSA about this tragically flawed machine. Mine locked up at about 18 months old, which seems like I squeezed a few more months out of it than most other owners of this machine. After lots of time on the phone and a couple back and forth emails, the exchange offered from lenovo customer service for being sold a defective machine (no longer under the one year warranty) was a 25% refund and no functioning product. I'd been a lenovo customer for about the past 8 years, but this makes it very easy to never ever buy another product from this corporation.I know that we live in an age of designed obsolesence in order to keep buying things, but this approach is deeply wasteful and costly to both consumers and the environment. Not to mention it seems borderline criminal. I know this comment won't change that, but I somehow feel like it's a duty to try to warn others, even though it's likely too late.

Sorry if this isn't a Windows 7 OS/Program issue, but this is kinda disturbing me,

So I was making my bed about 2 weeks ago, and I take my laptop and put it on my chair. When I was done with that I lightly toss my laptop onto my bed (like 2 inches above my bed), and when it lands I hear a loud CRACK. I pick up my laptop and look at it to see if its broken from somewhere, and I saw nothing wrong, so I continued using it. Later when I actually put it on my lap, the screen falls back, which it never ever does. I try putting it back to the way it was before and it didnt stay like it would. Kept falling back. I check both sides of the laptop and I see that one of the hinges was misplaced/broken, and the cover pieces next to the hinge were separated. I try putting them back together, but whenever I place the monitor back or move it back the cover pieces don't say together.

So uh, I can give pictures tomorrow if needed, but for now can anyone give me some solution to fix this?

Regards,
-Nide

Open and Administrative command prompt, type in "magic-powder-fixaroo" will instantly fix any physical problem with the hardware!

On a more serious note. You'll most likely need a replacement either the full screen assembly of just of the hing itself.

Hi I've got an issue with the left hinge on my HP Envy laptop which means I can no longer close it, it was very tight and as a result has pulled the plastic frame at the bottom of the screen from the top of the laptop. Seems like this is a very common problem but I haven't been able to find any details on how to fix this in the UK, can someone help?. I had the same problem after about 8 months of having the laptop (despite having taken good care of it!) and this was fixed under warranty but it is now out of warranty. As it was only fixed around 9 months ago and I have taken very good care of it since so I would hope that HP would fix this problem for me. I've always though of HP as a reliable brand so its quite disappointing for there to be such a glaring fault with this model. Thanks

My U410 touch took a bit of a knock recently and now has a damaged hinge that prevents the laptop from closing properly. The screen has also come away from the top casing slightly which, combined with the broken hing has cause the tip of the corner of the screen to snap off.I took it to Currys PC World the other day and they sent it off to the KnowHow repair centre. I just had a call from them telling me it would cost over £500 to replace. I feel like it must be possible to fix for less than this. Does anyone have any experience with this issue? I need to get it fixed asap and if that's not possible then I'll have to buy a new laptop which would not be ideal.

Hi all,  I recently purchased a brand new X250 laptop, I am slightly concerned though that the hinges are not quite up to scratch. I was expecting really tight, rigid hinges, with no play or movement at all. I was under the impression these would be really tight and the only way to open, close, or move the screen would be by holding one hand on the base and the other to adjust the lid.  However, with mine, they do feel very weak and loose. When typing, there is movement of a few milimetres of wobble which I was not quite expecting.  Is there anything I could do to tighthen these hinges myself? I am not comfortable at all to take the laptop apart! I did wonder if wrapping dental floss around the metal part of the hinge would make a difference as it seems that the hinge is not going through completely. One side has the cables, and the other is attached to the base. What would be your suggestions?  It does of course have a warranty with Lenovo - but I am concerned as well as I have read that hinges might not be covered by warranty! There are no cracks at all in the unit whatsoever. No damage, and the problem is always when the laptop is on the desk.  I really appreciate any help and suggestions with this matter.  Many thanks.

A:X250 Screen Hinge

Just contact technical support. It is covered under warranty. If they break, then it is considered abuse, which is not covered under warranty.

I know it's a shot in the dark, but I'm hoping someone can offer me some help. I've had my HP Envy for about 2 years and I've always been very careful with it, but last year one the hinges started to pop out. I was still under warranty and was able to have it fixed for free and everything was great. Now, just over a year later, the same hinge has broken again. I don't have the money to fix it and it's at the point where I can't open the laptop because the hinge caused the bottom of the computer to separate. This seems to be a really common problem with the HP Envy and it seems like HP should have some way to fix this (for less than the $350 I was quoted at my local store). Anybody?
