Probook 4540s 12GB Ram installed, 10.4 GB usable

Q: Probook 4540s 12GB Ram installed, 10.4 GB usable

Hi, I have a Probook 4540s and have recently upgraded it from 6 to 12 GB RAM. (the two RAM sticks have identical timing)Because of the degrade of performance after installing more than 8GB of RAM(as described in this topic http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Boot-and-Lockup/Performance-degrades-in-Probook-4540s-after-mem...),I had to us msconfig to set the memory limit to 12032 MB.However, windows now says that only 10.4 GB is usable. I really appreciate your help.

Attempted to up-date to Windows 10. Couldn't do it. Microsoft (MS) Tech tried to do it and couldn't do it. It seems there are some security tools that must be removed as they are incompatable with Windows 10. MS tried to remove and couldn't do it. He said they were on the mother board and when he tried to remove them they just kept coming back so once again he couldn't do it. He said contact HP and they could do it. Unable to find anybody at HP that can do it. As you can see nobody can do it so I guess it just cannot be done. That is unless some fine person out there has discovered a way to do it. If thats the case please tell me ho wo do it.

Hello! My ProBook 4540s was working fine until a half hour ago, when I unplugged it to move it and then attempted to plug it back in, and it stopped charging.  When plugging in the power cord (that came with the ProBook when I bought it around 18 months ago), the light above the power jack (and no other lights) flashes white 9 times. I've tried following this fix I found on Google: 1. Turn off the notebook2. remove the battery3. remove the charging adapter4. press + hold the power button for 40 seconds5. insert the charging adaptor only6. press the power button and it supposedly continues but I get stuck at this point, because even plugged in, my ProBook won't start up without the battery in also. Is this a know problem/is there a fix for this?

I have a new ProBook 4540s notebook that I shut down over the weekend. I am not sure if I put it into hibernate, sleep, or what as I am still getting use to it. When I tried to turn it on (not plugged in) I got nothing. So I plugged in the power cord and hit the power button again. All it did was the LED above the cord plug blinked about 8 times and nothing else. I let it "charge" overnight and tried again in the morning. Nothing but a blinking LED. I Googled the problem and it said to take the battery out, unplug, and hold the power button down for 20 seconds. I plugged it back in but left the battery out, and still the same thing - flashing LED. HELP! Thanks.

My laptop is running Windows 10 64-bit.

For the past few weeks my laptop has been turning off unexpectedly.

I've tried with battery only. With battery and power cable and with battery removed and only power cable.

I am using the machine normally and then screen just goes black and power offs - no restart, no hibernation, no shut down. Just instantaneously off.

It's not overheating. Could it be a fan issue?

I don't know - but it's getting quite irritating as I often have many apps open and many files open on each app and takes me 30 mins to get back to where I left off.

A:the touchpad of probook 4540s i5 freezes after sometime

Hello zamsam,

I understand that your touchpad will freeze.

Do a hard reset.
Turn the computer off.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.

This should reset the hardware in the computer.

As you power it back on tap the F2 key. This will load hardware diagnostics.
Run the startup test.

This will test all the hardware in the system and detect any problems.

If the entire test passes, turn off the computer.
As you turn it back on tap the F10 key. This will load BIOS setup utility.
Press F9 to load defaults.
Press F10 to save and exit.

When the computer boots back up, check to see if everything is working.

A:HP Probook 4540S Forget Bios Pasword

Dear Customer, Welcome to HP Support Forum and we are glad to assist you. This is to inform you that all HP Business Notebooks such as Probooks  or Elitebooks have more stringent security than consumer models infact they don't produce 'halt codes', the password cannot be derived from the Serial Number and the code is stored in non-volatile memory so removing the RTC cell will not reset the password in this case. Please have a look at this link. http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/49497-HP-Probook-Elitebook-BIOS-Password-Reset-Utility 2. Please Contact HP Business Notebook support they should be able to send you a customized SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password. Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again  **Click the White Thumbs Up Button on the right to say Thanks**Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem. Thank You,K N R K

Hello MS, Question:  Do any of the LED lights on the keyboard turn on when the computer doesn?t boot?  Here?s an HP troubleshooting document for notebooks that won?t start, along with some info about LED error codes: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01732674 If that doesn?t help, it is probably a hardware issue. Since you've only had the notebook for 10 months it?s probably still under warranty. Dear Customer,Welcome and Thank you for posting your query on HP Support Forum It looks like you are not able to Power ON the Notebook and wanted to fix the issuePlease perform below shown steps to find out if this is a software or hardware issue:1. Remove all Peripherals and Cables, Disconnect them and try to Power ON the Unit 2. Check for LED Light Status and ensure Power Button spring action is normal 3. Swap with a known good Power Cord and Power Adapter 4. Incase no Adapter is available, Check if the Power Adapter is slightly warmNote: This will give us a hint that the Power Adapter might be fine 5. Do you know if the Notebook was in Battery or Power Adapter Mode when you used it for the last timeNote: Ensure there is no liquid spillage or Power Outage 6. Check if the AC Adapter Port is loose/broken Note: If the Notebook doesn't Power ON even with a known good Power Adapter this confirms the Hardware fault with System Board or the DC Power Circuit  Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again **Click the 'Thumbs Up Button' to say Thanks** Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem. Thank You,K N R KAlthough I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP

But the site no longer has a field to type in the model number of the computer to check for compatibility. Please hurry! I am running out of time. Thanks,Tom

A:HP ProBook 4540s (Model C9K70UT) Windows 10 Compatibility

Hi: When I enter the product number for your PC after clicking on the Upgrade Icon on the link you posted, I get this message... http://www8.hp.com/us/en/ads/windows10/not_tested.html?jumpid=cp_r163_us/en/pc_cons/win10/update/Fin... So what that means is HP does not support your notebook with drivers and software to work on W10. That doesn't mean it can't.  It just means there is a possibility that some of the hardware won't work. I looked at the specs for your notebook, and it appears that it should work on W10. I have much older HP business notebooks than the 4540s and they work on W10. I do not use any of the security software such as the fingerprint reader, so I can't say if that will work on yours or not, and mine don't have webcams. There are some W7/W8.1 drivers you may have to install such as the JMicron Card reader driver to get the card reader to work. You can always give it a shot and if it doesn't work, roll back to W7 within 30 days of the upgrade. If you need help finding a driver or so, let me know and I will see what I can do.

I have a relatively new HP Probook 4540s, running the Windows 7 x64 Edition OS, which regularly stalls for a few seconds (5-6 secs), before returning to normal operations. This is witnessed while writing documents, viewing web-pages, opening any application, and other general use items.

Appreciate anyone's help in resolving this issue. Is this an OS issue or hw/sw combination problem? Look forward to your help in clearing this annoying and in-comprehensible problem.

Thanks and best regards,
Akbar

Hi guys. I just upgraded my processor to an AMD 8350. It replaced my Phenom. This is the 3rd day the new processor has been in the computer. First two days everything went fine. Ran Prime 95 and IBT to make sure i was up and stable. This morning (3rd day) got up, turned on the computer, and now i have less usable ram than i had last night. No matter how many times i restart, it shows less in windows than what bios shows. It says either 4,6, or 8gb usable ram (it changed just about every time too). I have reseated all the ram. I have moved them around. I have reseated the processor. I have clean installed windows 7 home premium x64. Does anyone have any ideas? This is the first issue with RAM i have ever ran into. Also, when i am in bios, and i go to the RAM settings, everything shows up like it is supposed to. Details, options, timings, etc. Not really sure where to go from here.

A:12gb ram shows in bios, only 4,6,or 8 usable shows in windows

In most AMD CPUs, the memory controller is on-die in the CPU. Maybe your FX-8350 is malfunctioning.

Also:

- Do you have the correct voltage for your memory set in BIOS?
- What kind of memory is it? (brand name, model, and speed)
- Have you tried putting the Phenom back in to see if the 12GB memory comes back?

Hi, new to the forums and I've been using my gaming rig for a while now. My motherboard is the ASUS Maximus III Formula, using Intel Core I5 760. And I recently did a dual boot on my system. One copy of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my original hard drive, and a Windows 7 Home premium x64 bit on another hard drive ( Hitachi ) and after a month or two, I had to format that ( Hitachi ) hard drive as I needed it for extra storage and now I'm getting only 2 Gb usable RAM but I installed 4Gb.

Hi,

I was helping my friend build a system and we got everything installed and running alright. It is a windows 7 64 bit. While checking the ram though, it says 8 gb installed only 4 usable? cant figure out why only $ gb is usable? Seems like it detects the full 8 but only uses 4?

A:8 gb ram installed only 4 usable 64 bit

Check to see if Windows is limiting it by doing the following:

Start > Run > Type in msconfig
In the System Configuration window, click Advanced options on the Boot tab.
Click to clear the Maximum memory check box, and then click Ok and restart.
On the restart, check the BIOS and reset to defaults as it may be setting aside memory also.

Do those, if it still says only 4GB useable then check to see how its being used:
Click Start, type resource monitor in the Search box, select Resource Monitor.
Click the Memory tab, and then view the Physical Memory section on the bottom of the page.

Howdy!

So I've read up a bit on this from other posts of the same problem and here's what I've tried:
Tried msconfig---every time I try to set the amount to anything above 2048 it resets. Tried deselecting "Max Memory" and it shows the same amount.
Updated BIOS (Which only detected 3063 TOTAL)
Looked up 'System Information' (See Attached Picture)
Looked up 'Resource Monitor' (See Attached Picture)
Looked up 'Control Panel -> System & Security -> System (See Attached Picture)
What I have not tried is unseating and reseating the RAM for two reasons; 1) I would have to remove the Video card (which sits so close to the RAM locking arms they would hit the back if I tried opening them) and the HDD (because it hangs over the Video Card) which I'm not entirely sure would work because 2) Windows seems to know there's more there.

It detects it in Control Panel, System Information, and System Resources. I just can't get it to use it for anything other than BIOS.

So, I would be tremendously grateful for any other suggestions to try before I go yanking the guts of my PC out. Thank you.

***Edit: Did some more reading --- The RAM came straight from the store the way it was. From what I can tell, there are two red colored banks and two black colored banks. The 2 2-GB sticks appear to be in one color and the 2 1-GB sticks appear to be in the other. ***

Recently it started be waayy slower, so after some quick investigation I found out that of my 16GB of RAM installed, only 3.24GB is usable. I've looked all over the internet and tried a bunch of things, but I can't figure it out. Can anyone help?

A:Why is only 1/4 of my installed RAM usable?

Simply put, the problem is your version of Windows, shows as 32-bit and there is an issue with more than about 3.2GB to 3.5GB or so. If you were to install a 64-bit version you'd get access to all 16GB.

So I checked task manager > performance tab and it says I have only 256mb of RAM. So then I checked My Computer > Properties and noticed it said "Installed Memory (RAM): 4.00 GB (256 MB Usable)" I've had w7 installed for a good 2 weeks now and never had a problem, until I rebooted tonight. I checked my BIOS and all my sticks show up. I DO NOT have a shared memory video card. Memory test checked out fine. I haven't installed any new hardware, nor touched the sticks at all. Any idea as to why w7 started doing this?

I have 4GB installed and only 2.93 usable.

I tried the solution given by rektalstab
1)Run
2)type "msconfig"
3)Go under the "boot" tab
4)click "advanced options" button
5)UNCHECK! "Maximum memory"
6)Reboot

This had no effect so i tried another "solution"

"open a cmd prompt (admin rights), type bcdedit.exe /SET PAE ForceEnable and reboot."

Still not fixed the problem.

I have enclosed two screenshots. If any more information is needed then please get in touch.

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

A:RAM: 4GB installed and only 2.93 usable.

NONE of those options should be checked, have you been playing around with computer settings?:

Do both of your RAM match (are they the same RAM stick) or do you just have a single stick.

When did this problem start happening?

You have a 64bit opperating system, so this is weird. what are all the settings you've played with in windows thus far, and why?

Also, your video card may be sharing internal memory. Your motherboard needs a 48bit or 64bit chipset, and your BIOS must support 64bit memory mapping (and it may need to manually be enabled by you). Be very careful in the BIOS, as one false step and you'll be reloading your operating system all over again

I think you are using on-board graphics, so that is probably where the missing RAM is going to

I just built a new system and decided to try out Windows 7. Everything is just amazing but I do have 1 problem. I have 3 GB memory installed and 7 recognizes this but says only 1GB is usable.

My system is basically.

i7 Quad 920
Gibabyte EX58-UD4P Motherboard
3GB DDR3 Corsair Memory
ATI Radon HD4670 1G DDR3 Graphics Card
Soundblaster Platinum Sound Card
Seagate SATA Barracuda 500GB 7200 RPM HD with drivers from 3/10/09

I am using the Windows 7 RC 7100 with all updates.

I have seen many places here and around that talks about 32bit only using 3 gb ram...I get that but nowhere talking about using less when that much is installed.

I did see something about Video cards using up memory...I thought that was why I bought a 1gb card in the first place..I thought it had its own ram....I don't understand why it uses my memory.

As you can see my memory usage is extremely high because of this and I am afraid of doing anything.

Also, I tried the x64 version and it only used showed 3gb and 2 usable.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your suggestion..

System managed paging, which shows a page size of 3 gb. I have a GTS 240 1 gb card. Shouldn't all my Ram be usable? Suggestions?

A:Installed vs Usable Ram

Two things to try, 1st:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...ndows-7-a.html

1) Start> In search box type msconfig.exe Click on msconfig.exe

2) On System Configuration dialog box select the Boot tab

3) Click Advanced Options

4) Uncheck the Maximum Memory option

5) OK your way out

6) Reboot

If that doesn't fix it, sometimes rearranging the physical Ram sticks can fix this. Move them to different slots.

Sorry guys, I had to post another topic about this.

I already understand why PAE isn't enabled on 32-bit versions. This is making me uncomfortable seeing that only a half of the memory is being used and the remaining is sitting there doing nothing. I'm not even getting better performance it's basically just the same with my older setup.

Before I had 2GB of ram installed (in a 1 X 1 format, in dual channel) and System Information reports 2GB with no usable for additional information.

Now that I've swapped in a new motherboard (which is a DDR3 one), System Information reports that I only have 2GB usable out of 4GB (Single Stick 4GB)

I've checked hardware reserved, here's what it said:

According to my research, it should be using around 3.50 to 3.80GB for the RAM and the rest for the hardware. I've already tried using my 1GB graphics card on another identical system and is reporting 3.60GB of ram usable.

Is there a way of pushing it to atleast 3GB?

A:4GB Installed only 2GB usable

Hello Roaster maybe I am being a little over simplistic but have you tried the stick in the other slot?? and then looked in the Task Manager. I am asking because I am thinking maybe the stick is not good which in that case you might run a memtest on it.

I just recently replaced a 1GB RAM card for a 4GB RAM card. (I had one 1GB and one 2GB) And now I am having this issue of Windows not using my newly installed RAM.
I have been searching old forum posts and making sure everything is updated for about 2 days now, but nothing seems to be conclusive.
The most common "fix" is going into resource monitor and unchecking "Max Memory" and this was unchecked to begin with.
Another that I've tried is "Memory Remapping" in the BIOS.
Currently I'm running Insyde BIOS F.17 on a Compaq Presario CQ62-209WM Notebook PC and there is no such option.
I've ran the "Memory Test" that is available to run in the BIOS, it all checks as PASS and Windows cannot find any issues, it just isn't working.
I have also just ran with the 1GB and 4GB configuration, and it comes up as 5GB installed and 768MB usable, and took about 4 minutes to boot rather than the usual 1 minute.
Any other suggestions?

I've read a number of threads on this topic and have the same problem, but mine seems to be intermittent.

I was recently advised to reseat the memory modules and having done that (about 2 weeks ago) System Properties reported 6.00 GB usable, as expected, and my system was running great.

Yesterday it was back to sluggish, and when I looked at the Properties it again says 6.00 GB (4.00 GB usable).

My system specs are in the drop-down below - any advice would be much appreciated.

A:6GB RAM installed, only 4GB usable - 64-bit OS

Hello Julie C. Welcome to the forum.

Two things stand out: Intermittent, and the fact that re-seating the RAM had a direct effect. It sounds like a connection problem.

You will want to buy a can of compressed air.
With the computer off and taking proper static precautions, remove all the sticks of RAM. Carefully inspect the RAM slots - looking for dust bunnies and/or hair. Use a wooden toothpick and the compressed air to thoroughly clean out the slots.
Also carefully inspect each RAM module. Look for obvious signs of wear, damage, or corrosion on the contacts.

Then put everything back together and test it out.

It would also be a good idea to run Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool on it.
Start the test before you retire for the evening and check it in the morning. Zero errors is the only acceptable result.

Hope that helps!

2. I think it's because you video card had shared memory, so 512 MB of your RAM is used for video memory.

A:installed ram vs usable ram

There could be plenty of reasons, but I would first go back and reset anything you changed in msconfig or anywhere else. There's no need to alter those settings.

Second, it is likely reserved for some hardware, most often a video card. Your system specs say laptop, so how are your graphics configured? Do you have a setting in the BIOS to reserve a certain amount of memory for the graphics?

Also do you have Onboard or IGPU If yes possible Ram shifted to them

I have a Gateway NV53A Laptop.

Windows 7 Home Premium - 64 bit
AMD Turion II P540 Dual-Core 2.40 GHz
8GB installed memory and only 3.74 is usable!

I have updated the bios with the latest release from Gateway, then went in and checked and it shows "memory 8192", meaning it is seeing the full 8 gig.

I go into the resource monitor and it shows 4358MB as Hardware Reserve.

...Why is half of my installed ram going to hardware reserve?

The Ram installed is Patriot 2x4gb, PC3-10600, 1333MHz, CL9. I've triple checked that it is fully inserted.

I went into bios to check about memory remapping, but that is not an option.

In all reality, I have no clue what any of this means...I'm just reading stuff off of other peoples issues. I'm not as technically inclined as I pretend to be...But I'm hoping that one of you fine gentlemen can take the time to help me!

If there is anymore info you need, let me know! I really want this month old machine to be running at peak performance.

Thank you!

DJ

Hello,

I have 4GB of RAM on my computer, but system info (right-click "Computer" -> "Properties") states:

Installed memory (RAM): 4.00 GB (3.00 GB usable)

Any ideas where the extra 1GB is hiding?

I used to have 3GB installed, purchased and extra 1GB and ended up back at square one (by the looks of things)...feel a little cheated to be honest!

Thanks in advance,

Al

Sergio, I think the remaining RAM is possibly being used by your graphics card.

I say possibly because looking at my own computer's specs seems to contradict that theory.

I installed windows 10 Home 64 bit.
I have an Acer laptop and I checked the BIOS for any memory options and there's nothing there.

The BIOS itself, gives me 6144MB of RAM, so I'm guessing everything is fine.
I checked that the max memory tab in MSCONFIG is unchecked.

I dont know what to do. I know that Windows doesnt use the whole 6GB but I believe it should be something like 5.XX gb in use.

A:6GB of RAM installed but only 4.96 usable

Some of it is dedicated to your graphics, it`s called Hardware Reserved, there is nothing wrong, don`t worry about it.

If you want you can open Task Manager, Performance, Resource Monitor, then click the Memory tab and it will have a bar graph explaining everything.

You can't have 5.99 useable with only 3GB installed. What is the screenshot from?
In the Start Search type msconfig to open the System Configuration window, if UAC asks, allow it to run. Select the Boot tab and click the Advanced button. The BOOT Advanced Options window will open.

Uncheck the box for Maximum Memory if it is checked. Click OK, Apply and reboot for the change to take affect.

The difference between installed and useable is for "hardware reserved."

I've read all of the current threads about memory, and learned a lot---but still have a question. I built a computer recently (so it's not a 'store-bought system'), installed 16 GB of RAM, but System Information shows only 2.96 GB as usable. I'm using Win 8, 32-bit, with an Intel i3-2120 (3.30 GHz) CPU on an MSI motherboard. Not a gamer, so I have only a low-end GE Force 210 video card.

From what I gather, Win8 (32-bit) only allows a certain amount of RAM to be used. Is this correct? If so, did I make a mistake by installing 16 GB, when I could have installed a lesser amount? For example, if Win8/32-bit only recognizes (or at least, uses...) something like 3.5 GB---should I have simply stuck in 4 GB?

FYI, I'm happy with my computer, my wife and I can surf just fine (we have cable Internet, with an advertised speed of 15), and I don't really have any complaints. Just trying to educate myself about installed versus usable RAM.

Thanks.

A:Installed versus Usable RAM

A 32 bit OS, Win XP, Visa, Win 7, Win8, can only address a little under 4GB. Thus only having 2.96GB useable is a valid figure. Generally its 3 to 3.5GB but depending on hardware it can be a little less.

To fully use the memory, reinstall the 64 bit OS version. The i3 will run 64 bit OS.

Hi there,
I just bought a new 4.gb corsair DDR 3 memory card for my pc recently, and after installing it, it comes up saying it has 6gb of memory installed (2gb usable).
That is from the system tool in control panel.

Of course task manager confirms in the performance tab, that there is only 2gb available still.

I have double checked the motherboard specs for compatibility, and it has the DDR 3 cards on the support list, so I don't get why it's coming up as unusable...

The board is gigabyte gap55ud3
Running windows 7 ultimate 64-bit
I7 core Intel

What can I do to get this memory card working?
Could the board maybe only have a couple of slots that work in the frequency range of my card? (1333mhz)
Update:
OK, so after a bit of trouble shooting, I noticed a couple of things:
Firstly, the first memory slot (first on the left) on my motherboard is dead (due to the shop mounting my motherboard incorrectly, and shorting it out), so I had the 2gb card in the second slot, and had the 4gb card installed on the 3rd slot.
I took out the 2gb card, and replaced it with the new 4gb card, and it runs fine.

However, this still doesn't answer for the fact that it picks up the memory as unusable, if I install the card on the 3rd slot.
Could my guess earlier have been correct?
Could it be that only 2 of the slots are compatible with the higher frequency cards (1333), and the other slots only work with lower frequency cards?

A:6gb memory installed, but only 2gb usable???

Check the motherboard User Manual. When mixing and matching memory cards, there are sometimes specific slots for them to be installed into. And sometimes you cannot mix different sized cards. Again, it should all be covered in the User Manual.

In any case, installation wouldn't appear to be an issue. As you have already noted several times, the motherboard and OS are recognizing 6GB. Which would lead me to believe it's an OS related issue.

Hi everyone. this is my first ever post here, so bear with me plz. I have a dell inspiron 530, with 4 gb ram installed, but the computer says i only have 2.75 usable. any thoughts or help would be much appreciated. i would really like to use the rest of my ram.

btw, right now, this second, the task manager shows 1767 cached, and 1801 available. that number is over 2814, the amount it says i have usable.

A:4gb installed only showing 2.75 usable? is this right? what can i do?

Check your BIOS for a "Memory Remap" option, if it has it make sure its enabled.
The usable memory may be less than the installed memory on Windows 7-based computers

Hi all,

How come? Any ideas out there?

A:64bit 4gb installed 3.12 usable?

Without knowing your system specs can't point you in the right direction, but check in the bios for a setting having to do with memory remapping. Depending on the motherboard and/or who built the computer, it may not be there and if it isn't then you're stuck with what is available unless there is a bios update that will allow the option.

More info here,

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605

Quote:
The BIOS must support the memory remapping feature. The memory remapping feature allows for the segment of system memory that was previously overwritten by the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) configuration space to be remapped above the 4 GB address line. This feature must be enabled in the BIOS configuration utility on the computer. View your computer product documentation for instructions that explain how to enable this feature. Many consumer-oriented computers may not support the memory remapping feature. No standard terminology is used in documentation or in BIOS configuration utilities for this feature. Therefore, you may have to read the descriptions of the various BIOS configuration settings that are available to determine whether any of the settings enable the memory remapping feature.

Okay so i have a Quad core x6850 Intel CPU, EVGA 280GTX GPU CARD.

Now i installed window 7 x86 bit version ULTIMATE. And i have 6GB DDR3 RAM INSTALLED INTO MY geforce Nforce 790i motherboard. Now the problem is that in Windows 7 it shows "Installed Memory: 6.00GB (2.75 GB Useable)". But in Bios it shows me that 6gigs in installed.

Now does that mean it is WIN 7 that is just reading my DDR3 RAM WRONG? But i am still getting the full performance for all of my 6GB DDR 3 RAM? Since my bios is reading all of the 6GB RAM?

Also i tried doing what other forums indiated i should be doing like type config and check mark or uncheck mark MAX MEMORY. Tried doing that, but noting happened.

Now the only thats left and i am having confusion with is, some people are saying i should Enable Memory remapping in bios? I have a nforce 790i motherboard, and i can't find that exactly in my bios mode. Is there any other way to fix this problem? Please HELP! THANKS!

A:6GB DDR3 Ram Installed BUT only 2.75 USABLE?!

6GB is outside of the 4GB limit for x86 so you will never be able to get all of it. Just for the sake of information, open Resource monitor (Start > type "resource") Then head to memory and then Physical. I bet it has a giant gray block of Hardware Reserved. You'll need to find out how to do Memory Remapping to solve that.

and it says that 1024mb is hardware reserved, ( maybe it is that ? how do i change that ?

Hey everyone. So, I finally decided, after weeks and weeks of searching for help and a solution to my problem, to join up a forum as ask.

My problem is the following; I have 4GB of RAM installed in my computer (the stock RAM; I have changed no hardware since receiving the laptop), but Windows tells me on 1.75GB of it is usable.

Things I've tried so far, to no avail, include...

Going into msconfig and switching off "Maximum Memory"

Enable Memory Remapping in Bios (Bios has no Memory Remapping option)
Switching RAM Slots
One RAM stick at a time (laptop would not start ? tried both sticks in both slots)
Ran Microsoft memory analysis ? found no problems
Updated some drivers

Some info on my laptop...

Computer would not start with single stick of RAM
[Video Card Info] ? Total Available Graphics Memory: 894 MB
Dedicated Video Memory: 256 MB
System Video Memory: 0 MB
Shared System Memory: 638 MB
BIOS recognizes only 2048MB/2GB of RAM

Attached is a picture of the Windows Task Manager Resource Monitor...it tells me 2307 MB of my RAM is Hardware Reserved. Also attached are several sets of information and specs.

I was told it could possibly be a bent pin on the motherboard. I'm willing to check that out, but I want to leave it as the last option.

If you need to know anything else, just ask.

Thanks in advance.

How can I get all of my installed RAM working? I googled a bit, found out something about memory remaping option in BIOS, but I have no such option in the BIOS. I am using a Acer Aspire 5737Z laptop with a Geforce 9400m graphics card. Please, any help would be much appreciated.

A:Installed/usable RAM memory?

Hi starterz and welcome to Se7en Forums

That looks about right. On 32-bit systems, the total amount of memory that can be addressed is 4GB. Within that address range, there are also the system I/O devices and other hardware. These in effect take up some of the available memory space, so the amount of physical memory available to your system actually reduces by that amount. Depending on your system's hardware and configuration, this can be anything ranging from 256MB to 1GB (typically 768MB). However, that can vary. In addition, on a laptop the GPU is allocated a portion of your RAM for its own use.

This is from my system. What does yours show for the Graphics section?

Hello all!
I noticed when poking around in my computer settings and hardware information, that my RAM is showing (16Gb), but only 4Gb are "usable". I have been looking all over creation to find out why, but to no avail. I am utilizing:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit OS,
AMD Phenom II x6 1090T,
ASRock 970 Extreme3 mobo,
4 (4Gb) sticks of G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 ram,
and a
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 graphics card

I have tried all sorts of things, from tweaking the volts a bit (which showed 8 Gb usable out of 16 installed and crashed the computer),
to putting one stick in the mobo at a time, and booting with each stick (this gave me 5 short beeps when trying to boot two of the sticks individually). As a side note, When I have all RAM in it shows all 4 in my bios and on my System Properties.

I now have the 2 sticks in (that didn't cause the 5-beep error) which is 8Gb, and it's only showing 4 Gb usable.

On another note, from time to time when booting, I get an error that says to, "reboot, and select a bootable device" even though the HDD has not been changed or manipulated in any way. If all of these things are able to be addressed through a tweaking of my bios, I can't seem to find an easy way to do it anywhere!

My apologies if I missed a thread that pertained to this issue, but I have a bit of a Frankenstein computer on my hands here and could use some advice!
Thank you in advance!

A:16Gb installed RAM (4Gb usable)

Hello and welcome Absalom mate try a memtest first up maybe you have some bad sticks or slots even .

You need to make a bootable disk then set the BIOS to boot from the optical and then let it run for at minimum of 8 passes unless you get errors straight away see RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Hey all,

I've recently built a new PC with 8GB of RAM installed on the motherboard (2 sticks of 4GB). The operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit. When checking over my specifications, everything was in order apart from the RAM which stated 8GB was installed, but only 1.92GB were usable.

I know that the wasted RAM is something to do with the 32-bit operating system but is there anything I can do to slightly boost this while I try to get my hands on a 64-bit operating system? Also, will installing a 64-bit OS definitely ensure that all 8GB are being used?

Thanks in advance!

A:8GB of RAM installed, only 1.92GB usable

32-bit Win 7 can use between 3 and 4GB of RAM, usually around 3.6GB. 64-bit should be able to use the whole 8GB. The fact that you're only using 1.9GB suggests that part of your RAM is being used by the system for something else. You may need to peruse your BIOS to see if any of your RAM has been diverted to serve another purpose. I would guess shared video RAM but see in your system specs that you have a discrete video card so that wouldn't be the reason.
