After an automatic HP update, my Microsoft Word and Excel programs won't work and my files won't open. What caused this and what can I do to fix the problem without losing my files? I have files that are part of my work and I HAVE to have them ASAP. Please help. Thanks in advance.
Hi: Try running the system restore utility and select a restore point to a time before the automatic HP update ran. If you are unfamiliar with how to use this program, please read the info at the link below. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/system-restore Then change you HP update program to notify you that there are updates and you choose when to install them rather than it being done automatically. That way you can run them and find out which one is blowing up your system and you can prevent that one from running the next time. Or you can just leave things as they are if they are working OK for you. Paul8 more replies
Recently, I'm having slow file loading while opening ms word files and excel files directly from windows explorer. It takes a minute to load, however it opens immediately if I open .doc files or .xls files directly from their application software. It also take a minute for MS Word and Excel software to shut down.
I have run my antivirus (Symantec) and MBAM but they all show no virus was found. I'm not sure what should I do next, please advice.

I have several password protected documents from an old crapped out computer that are done in a very old version of WordPerfect and I cannot open them up in my current computer's "Microsoft Works Word Processor". The ones that are not password protected open up fine, but the ones that have password protection bring up the following Windows message: "Works cannot open (said document). The file may be in use by another application, the file may not be supported by any of the installed converters, or the file may be corrupt". I have tried all other "converters" that are a part of my Microsoft Works Word Processor. If my old computer still worked, I could simply remove the password and I would have no problem, but as you can see, this is not the case. Any help would be appreciated.

The only way I can get any MS office programs to open is to right click and choose the "open with" option. I check the box to Use as default, but they still won't open the next time.
I tried run > winword /r to reset word, but that didn't help either.
All the icons are the same, a little blue chemistry beaker.
In properties, the type of files say they are, "FFV files (docx), FFV files (xlsx), etc".
How do I get these files to open the normal double click way?
Have you tried repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair)?
Aside from that if the file types are "FFV files (docx), FFV files (xlsx), etc", that suggests you've installed some other software that has taken over the file associations. In that case, you might consider uninstalling that software; otherwise you'll need to reset the file associations, by right-clicking each Office file-type (docx, xlsx, etc.) and using Open With>Choose default program to re-associate them with the correct Office application.
I recently purchased an ASUS Windows 8.1 64 bit computer. I transferred my Microsoft Works Version 8.0 word processor and spreadsheet files from my old computer onto the new computer. I just purchased the Microsoft Office 2013 Home and Student Edition (64 bit version) from an online vendor and installed the software onto my new computer.
I have no problems opening my Works spreadsheet files in Excel. However, when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get gibberish. I did some research online and found out that there is a Microsoft tool called Works 6-9 Converter which allows one to open Works files in Word.
I downloaded the Works 6-9 Converter tool from the Microsoft Support website and installed it on my PC. However, when I subsequently attempted to open a Works word processor file in Word, a dialog box appeared with the error message "Word cannot start the converter Wks9Pxy.cnv" and the file did not open properly (i.e., I got gibberish).
I did a little more research online and found out that uninstalling the Works 6-9 Converter, then downloading and installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package, and finally reinstalling the Works 6-9 Converter may correct this problem. I followed these steps, but unfortunately when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get the same error message and the file does not open properly. ... Read more

Everytime I go into Word, Excel, etc. after about 15 seconds it tells me that Word has encountered a problem and that it needs to close. I can't do anything. Print, open attachments, start on a new doc, anything.
It ask me to send an error report, I do, but I still basically am locked out.
Thanks for the help!
In the absence of other information, go to add/remove programs in Control panel, uninstall and reinstall. You won't lose any of your documents.
Am having a strange problem for the last few days.Everytime I start Word,XL or PP it closes down automatically after a few seconds.I didn't ave that before, and it is quite baffling.I am using Win 2000 SP2 and Office 2000.
In word, excel & pp:
1. from the application menu select HELP
2. select DETECT & REPAIR
My desktop pc is a Compaq Presario with Windows 95 and Microsoft Office. Recently it has started taking forever to close down a Word document or an Excel spreadsheet. The program itself closes out in normal speed but its the separate documents that take forever.
I have checked disk space - plenty available. I have done the usual maintenance ie defragmentation, scan disk etc.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
If you're using office 97, according to microsoft, one possibility is that outlook is journalizing your other office documents. They say to start outlook and under tools / options / journal clear all the check boxes under 'also record files from' list. They say this can cause files to close slowly even if outlook isn't running.
I had to do a sytems recovery for wind xp prof. but there is no icon for xcel or word. Did a search & they are there (C:\program files\microsoft office\office but when I try to open err comes back with "this application must be installed to run. please run setup from the location where you originally installed the application" any suggestions?
The best idea: "Run setup from the location where you originally installed the application".
Setup will give you options about what to install or repair. It looks like some registry entries may have been corrupted or removed by the restoration, especially if you restored to a point prior to when they were installed.
In both Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, when I do a "File, Open" command, a box comes up showing the contents of the last directory I used. If I then attempt to use the drop down from this box to navigate to a new directory, it takes 65 seconds before the drop down list appears, and then another 30-40 seconds before the drop-down menu responds to my request for a new directory.
I have uninstalled and re-installed Microsoft office, and I have run the "detect and repair" option in the help menu. Nothing seems to fix the problem. I have no idea why this is happening or what Microsoft Office is doing during those 65 seconds to produce the drop down list and during the following 30-40 seconds to navigate to a requested directory in the drop down list.
I do not have this problem with other applications such as Lotus 123.

I have recently installed Microsoft Office 2010 on a brand new computer running on Windows 7.
When I save a word document the only way you can view it is by saving it in Word document 97-2003.
When saving a spreadsheet in Excel, and you try to open it, it displays as a Adobe document which cannot be opened.
Can someone explain if I have done something wrong, and how do I rectify this problem.

This is a question about the search functions within Microsoft Office Word 2007 and Excel 2007. I want to be able to do searches that would yield both "e" and "é" in the results of a single search. Right now all I can do is two separate searches. This may mean setting up a way to ignore accent marks, or a way of defining "e" as "e or é" for the search process. My operating system is Windows Vista. Thanks for your help.
I have Vista Home Premium which came installed on my HP PC. I installed Office 2007 which ran without problem til now. Both desk top icons for Excel and Word disappeared. Both Excel and Word do not appear listed under Programs, Office 2007. I can still create new spreadsheets and documents and I did not lose any files that I am aware of. The only thing I have done recently was delete an user account. I chose to save that user's files but I cannot find them. Two problems or are they related? Thanks for your help !

Have a computer that was brought to me that may have been infected with some Malware. There was, and we were able to remove it. But now there's a problem were UAC is popping up and asking for all programs to run. and I do mean ALL.
When you start up a computer, as soon as you log into the machine it will run through all the programs that have to start (located in the startup folder or the RUN area in Regedit)
For each program that has to run you can to click through a UAC window to allow that program to run. Every time. And I understand that you might get UAC for some programs, but all of them? Word? Excel? Notepad?
I don't really want to turn UAC off, but at the same time I wonder if UAC has a database of accepted software and it's been corrupted or removed?
Once a machine is infected with malware it can never be trusted again. I think the UAC problem you are having may be a sign that the system is still under the influence of malware even though the malware was ostensibly removed.
My approach would be to wipe the drive and reinstall the OS and Apps.
I just download an mp3 encoder and it wants to open in ms word. This isn't the only program to do this. I have tried to delete ms word but that didn't solve my problem. I am running in win 98. Can anybody tell me what is causing this to happen. It is very frustrating.

I would like to get this preferably into Word and be able to use the tab key to jump to the next entry. is there any way to do this?

Can you write a macro that will copy something from excel and paste it into word?
If so how do you do it? Do you write the macro in Excel or Word?
Yes, this can be done. Describe in detail exactly what you are trying to do and I'll write you a sample macro. Where should the values appear in the Word document? Which cell values will you be using? If you could .ZIP and attach some sample files that would make things much easier.
The basic steps are:
1) Set reference to Word library in your VBA Editor in Excel
2) Create a new instance of Word Application within your Excel project.
3) Execute your code on the instance of Word application.
Dim wdApp As Word.Application
Set wdApp = New Word.Application
wdApp.Visible = True
wdApp.Documents.Open ("C:\Documents and Settings\DocumentName.doc")

I've had a read through other posts on the site to see if anything applies and can tell you:
- I can happily edit the document
- All the EXCEL and WORD shortcuts work i.e. F& conducts a spell check in word, F12 allows Save as
- I have searched for normal.dot (clicking on the widows icon in the lower right of screen and entering normal.dot in the search box) and can't find it!? a number of word document. A number (say 20) of seemingly random word documents re listed i.e. documents that I have created all with a file type of Microsoft Word Document

Which year version of the programs are you using? Perhaps normal.dot should be normal.dotx. It is a hidden file.
My Microsoft Word suddenly stopped opening about two-three months ago, and I've tried everything I can think of. I tried repairing it, uninstalling and reinstalling. The program came with my computer, so I don't have a code number for it. Often whenever I tried reinstalling it, it would get to 20% of step 3 of 4 and then stop. It sometimes said my connection was interrupted, even though it wasn't. Any ideas please?

I am trying to make a database based on survey data collected in Microsoft Office Forms.
Each subject has submitted a word document which contains responses to survey questions filled out with Word's Form feature. I would like to automatically populate an Excel spreadsheet with the form fields from a large group (25-50 documents per batch).
I have seen questions similar to this raised in other forum posts, but I seem to be running into problems with the suggested macros. This might be because I am working on a Mac (the only computer at our company) in Microsoft Office 2011. Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help,
If you are wanting to use VBA to copy / move between Word and Excel you will almost certainly need appropriate boxes ticked under references in the VBA editor for Microsoft Excel XX Object Library.
I've no idea whether the Mac version is set up the same and would imagine you would have a bit of work to do to translate VBA written for windows into a mac variant.
What you might do is consider providing some dummy data and files and seeing what we can do to help.
My computer did some sort of restore yesterday. I'm not sure exactly what happened. My son was looking at the computer trying to fix a problem with the audio because nothing I tried had worked. The OS is Windows 7 and I have recently installed Office 2010 Home & Student version.

I used the virus forum to remove an infection and was told to post here as this problem is most likely not virus related. The forum can be seen here:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...p;#entry1228403Windows XP Home SP3800mhz P3512mb memoryWhen I run Firefox, Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, or anything else they stay open for anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes then close without warning. The window just goes away without any warning or error messages. When I open Firefox again it asks if I want to restore the previous session. The computer also seems to run much slower than it did before the infection. The nightly virus scan that used to take about 4-5 hours now takes 3 days. I thought I fixed the closing programs problem a couple days ago. I was looking through the bios and noticed an option for Plug and Play Operating System was set to "no". I switched it to "yes" and left Firefox open. It stayed open for 3 days until I started surfing and it closed within a few minutes. I don't seem to have this problem in Safe Mode. I got this computer from my father and I don't have all the disks that came with it so I'm trying to avoid a reinstall if at all possible. I do have an OEM XP disk and an XP upgrade disk from another computer if they may be needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the TSG forums.
Have you tried doing a system restore?
If you spend a bit of time browsing the forums you will notice that most of us recommend NOT using a registry cleaner. They can cause many problems. Much more than they help.
Post back and let us know how the restore goes.
my system: vista 64 Ultimate, Office 2007, all updates, no viruses, 8 GB RAM, 750 GB HDD, C2D
Problem: I used to have office 2003. At some time word could not save anymore. so I switched to office 2007 thinking it is related to vista. when I start word 2007 I get the error message "could not create work file. check the environment variable". At first it wouldn't save either, but I fixed that by deleting the normal.dot It seems to work besides the annoying message. The other problem may be related: Excel can not save at all and crashes while trying and says: "MS Excel cannot open or save any documents because there is not enough available memory or disk space... to make memorey free...". all other Office applications seem to work well (haven't tried too much).
I googled and tried all the registry tricks (that's how I found the fix with deleting the normal.dot). I suspect at some time I changed something and can't remember what. but word 2003 worked at some time. I have reinstalled Office multiple times (deleted registry entries etc.) Nada. My links to the temp folders in environment variables should be correct. I had meddled with those at some point.
I searched the forum, haven't found anything. Sorry in case I overlooked something here.
Edit: I have the swap file size on "automatic", despite 8 GB of RAM. I only have one account (administrator)
No one an idea? It happens in outlook too. but not when i start it, it sporadically pops up that it can't create that work file.
I really googled around and could at least solve it so that i can save in word, so i really tried before asking.
This is a sub routine designed for Excel 2003 that calls the 'Save As' routine and allows the user to input their own file name and directory etc. I would like to convert it to a Word 2003 routine can anybody show me how or suggest a method by which I can do the same in Word ? Word doesn't recognise the 'Application.GetSaveAsFilename' method in this routine.
I have tried using a MsgBox to define a file name and the use the ActiveDocument.SaveFileAs to save the file but I can't allow the user to choose his own directory using that method and its clumsy !
Dim file_name As Variant
' Get the file name.
file_name = Application.GetSaveAsFilename( _
FileFilter:="Excel Files,*.xls,All Files,*.*", _
Title:="Save As File Name")
' See if the user canceled.
If file_name = False Then Exit Sub
' Save the file with the new name.
If LCase$(Right$(file_name, 4)) <> ".xls" Then
file_name = file_name & ".xls"

Windows Server 2003 SP2 - is sharing a folder, and the client PC's that are opening files on LAN (100Mbps).
There are 5 PC's 3 with Windows XP, one uses Windows 7 and another one Windows Vista, the problem is detected only on the XP machines. When users try to open a Word or Excel file it hangs, other files are opened instantly (*.pdf, *.exe...). They use Microsoft Office 2007.
What could be the problem ? Why Office files are freezing when being opened from a shared map ?
Please help me solve this issue, thank you in advance.

I have finally decided to seek help for this problem and will be forever grateful if someone is able to help me.
I have a mind-boggling problem with my computer right now. I just recently installed Nero, and now for some reason the following programs always immediately crash when I try to run them:
Microsoft Word, Excel Outlook, and Powerpoint
All of the free Microsoft Games (Freecell, Solitare etc..)
iTunes (but not quicktime!?!?)
The rest of the programs on my computer are fine, including FireFox, Skype, uTorrent, Internet Explorer, Quicktime, mIRC etc..
And the weird thing is, what I think caused the problem, Nero Burning ROM, is fine and working perfectly!!!
And even weirder, I have had this problem happen to me about 6 months ago when I first installed Windows 7. Everything was working fine, until I installed a program and things started crashing. And the thing is, I know for a fact it was a program other than Nero.
I think it must be that for some reason certain types of programs are getting corrupted somehow, and these programs share certain traits, for example they use Microsoft Visual Studio (or some other programming language or installer)
Cry for help:
I hope this makes sense to anyone reading. I have tried formatting several times, and what always happens is that everything is fine until I install one program (usually a different program each time) and then everything starts crashing!!!
Would it help if I sh... Read more

I have just installed SP1 in hopes there's some sort of fix, to no avail
I have tried a repair via the installation disc
I am hoping I don't have to uninstall / reinstall because I don't know if the licenses are limited
If anyone could shed some light on how to fix it, I would greatly appreciate it!

I know how to use bullets, but if you tab in the bullets, it will stay tabbed throughout the entire document unless you set up tabbed bullets again. When I try to backspace to go back to left alignment, it will delete the bullet and still stay tabbed. Basically what I am asking is after you do a tabbed bullet, how do you go back to aligning the bullets left again?
Try shift-tab instead of Backspace to shift the tab to the left.7 more replies

We have Pc's that run XP Pro & a server that runs Win2000 Server. We are running Office 97 that is installed on all pcs and server. I moved some files around to different drives for space & then mapped the pc's accordingly. One of the users is saying that before I moved the files, they would come up in alphabetic order. This is when you would open the program then open the file through file/open in the Word or Excel program. I did not notice when moving them that they were in any order. I looked every place I could think of in the programs to indicate order it finds the files but cannot find any thing. Can anyone help me with this. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I have been using Windows 7 for about six months now, and have recently experienced a rather strange event when trying to access my Word and/or Excel documents. When I have opened either of these programs, and clicked on the small yellow file icon at the top to look at the available files, I get the normal list of those files, and can choose which one to open. However, occasionally after clicking the yellow "open" icon, the page is completely blank, that is to say none of my saved files are showing. After a time (usually about five or six minutes), the page loads and I see all these files so that I can then open the required one. If I go to Task Manager, nothing is showing as running, so I am at a loss why this should be. If anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful for their advice. Many thanks.
Well, it appears our desktop has contracted something...Microsoft Office 2010 will not open any files as it states they are all corrupt. First, I've done a lot of searching on the internet and notice others are experiencing the same problem. Some of them are stating they get a screen asking for a ransom, apparently the Cryptolocker virus. We are not getting this message.
I've tried repairing files though a lot of different avenues found on the internet, but none have worked.
I thought possibly the files were being corrupted while attempting to open them, so I copied a few files that I hadn't tried opening to my laptop running the same version of Office, but they appeared corrupted on it as well. I tried running through the repair procedures on this machine and it didn't work either.
Two things: one, do I have some kind of virus on this desktop, and two, has anyone found a way to repair the corrupted files?

Is it possible to retrieve/restore Word or Excel files that were removed to the recycled bin and then the bin was emptied? I am using Windows 95. Thank you.
Unless you are willing to pay to get them back I'd say give them a nice funeral. Sorry but this is a fact. There are sites on the web that can retrieve them but they charge. If you plan on doing this do not use the computer for if you write over them it makes it harder to retreive them.
After removing the Win32Klez.E virus from my hard disk, backed up my Microsoft Office 2000 files & reinstalled Windows 98, Office 2000 no longer recognize the Word & Excel file formats. The file extensions are correct but it requested for a file conversion or choose an encoding for loading the file. Appreciate if someone could help.
Please help me to recover files. I am unable to open PDF, Word, excel, DWG etc files.
There many folders shared from server but it has affected to my 4 shared folders.

I'm using MS Office 2003 on a PC, and tried to send Word, Excel & .pdf files to a Mac user. She has Office for Mac 2011 installed on her computer.
She cannot open any of the files. I think she may not have Adobe Reader installed, which explains why the .pdf will not open. So far as the .doc and .xls files ... I'm stumped. Other than recommending that she download Open Office, does anyone have any ideas?
A few suggestions:
Visit this page to see if she can update her Office software.
Also, try the Office Open XML File Format Converter from Apple.
If that fails, and you don't want to use Open Office, you could save Word docs as RTF Rich Text files, and Excel files as CSV, comma seperated value files.
Iwas trying to create a database using excel and mail merge in word and in process saved a lot of files to see if I had it right before entering lots of data - how do I delete them now- under find file i put the name and it says not found but i can see it under file as I open word or excel?????
From the File > Open pulldown
Select the file, right mouse > Delete
Our sister company apparently contracted a worm that changed all of their .doc(x) and .xls(x) files to .exe files. Does anyone here have experience with this worm, and if so what was your solution?
If what I'm reading online is right, this worm is pretty old so I'm not sure how they would get it. I'm also not at that site so the only information I have is what my boss has told me.

My problem is that when I link an Excel file with Word, I get a graph with grid lines behind it. How can I get rid of these grid lines? I'm not referring to the grid lines within the graph itself, but the grid lines behind the graph. It looks like a nice graph siting on an Excel spreadsheet with the cells behind it. I've fiddled around with it and gotten the cells to "shrink around it", but you can still see the cells around the edges of the graph.
I'd send the file, but this system wouldn't take a .xls file. If someone wants to look at my problem graph, I'd be happy to email the file.

I had recently installed Norton Antivirus for my PC. After installing this, I was unable to open any Word or Excel documents that are saved under my C: or A: drives. A problem has suddenly developed with my Excel and Word files. I think it has been caused by opening a ?rogue? which seems to have produced 4 viruses and 592 malware items. These I have cleared.I have also run a System restore. But the problem with my MS Office files persists. It is this. Both the Excel files and the Word files have had their respective icons replaced by an orange rectangular icon.I cannot open either the Word or Excel files in the normal way i.e. by clicking on the file.I have found that I can open the files by right clicking and then using the MS Open With facility, either Word or Excel.I have also found that I can edit these files and save them. But they are saved with the rectangular icons.I am running Windows 7.If I left click either the Excel or word files then I get the following message:?This program is unable to run because of missing or corrupted filoes. Contact your computer manufacturer.?This is clearly not a hardware problem. It seems the virus/malware has corrupted a MS Office command file or something.I have reach the end of my knowledge. Can anyone help me please to restore the status quo when all was working properlyThank you.
I would start by running an Office Repair. If that doesn't work, completely uninstall and reinstall Office.4 more replies

On my old Thinkpad Windows XP notebook, which is almost three years old, the language bar is now starting to malfunction. I usually need to switch between English (US) and Chinese (PRC), and the language bar has been working for me in doing so until recently. Now, when I open Microsoft Word 2003 and try to switch to Chinese, Word freezes and I have to use the Task Manager to end the Word process.
I have been able to switch to Chinese (PRC) on my desktop with the language bar, but even when I do so, the language bar still says I'm on the English language (the only reason I know I'm on Chinese is because there's a check mark next to the language).
My dad had recently installed an update from Java, and in the process inadvertently installed OpenOffice as well. He had also installed Windows Live Messenger and in the process installed Rhapsody player as well. I did a System Restore to a point before he installed any of this, but that didn't help at all.
What could be the problem? I've cleared my registry. I've tried using the language bar in safe mode and it has the same problem. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the East Asian language files, but that hasn't helped at all.
Is there any program that I should use to diagnose this problem? And afterwards, how do I solve it?

Office XP 2002
Some files - not all, don't open when double clicked. Word (or excell) starts up, the hourglass sits there for a few seconds and then rotates once, then the tail of the mouse cursor turns multiple colors for a short time, then nothing. Word stays open but the file never opens. Shut down word and double click on the same file again and it opens right up. Again, not all files. Happens consistently with the same files (i.e., open it twice to actually see it, edit it, close it, have to open it twice again to get it to come up).
Office problem or Windows?
Office 2003 on XP.
If I double-click a .doc or .xls file, I get a brief "Preparing to Install" window that goes away in a second or so. The app then opens to an empty screen. If I then click File/Open, I can drill down to my file and open it that way.
Anyone else have this problem? What did you do to fix it?
Thanks in advance!
This is a long shot, but you may have to associate the files with the program they were meant for. On eway to do this is to open my computer, not any office program. Find the file (files) you want, right click and choose "Open With" and pick the correct program in the list.
In the future your files should open with the right program without any additional efftort.
Let me know if this works.
Is there a way to configure Microsoft applications so that I can have a window open with a file from Word and a window open with an Excel file and edit them simultaneously? When I have both windows open now, whichever one I click in stays open and the other automatically minimizes itself. I'd also like to be able to have a Microsoft file and browser window open (and editable) and the same time.

I have an Excel sheet that contains text/data per row. This excel sheet may have as many as 300 rows of data. I would like to export the data in the excel file row to a word template, and save that to a specific file name which corresponds to column 2. I would like to be able to 'click' a button and have all 50 rows export their information using the word template and have these files saved under specific filenames in the line item data (ex: column 2). Do you have any suggestions on how I can do this?
I recently did a new install of Windows XP, having been using Windows 2000. I backuped and formatted the disk and the install went with out problem. I also installed SP3.
The main problems I'm experiencing are with Word files taking a very long time to load and being unable to access the internet/network for about 40 seconds when booting up.
I wonder if I'm infected or perhaps there is a network issue?
Here's a detailed description:
On startup items load as normal, then there is a long delay of about 30-40 seconds when nothing happens as if it's finished start up, however I can't access the internet or the network. Then the remaining startup programs suddently load (such as the Wacom graphics tablet driver) and I can now access the internet and network.
When I click a Word or Excel files from a shared drive it 14 seconds to load Word/Excel then another 3 seconds to load the file itself! However when I load Word locally it loads instantly and load a new document instantly. (Office 2003).
After the computer had been on for about 5/6 hours Word/Excel loads files from the network instantly. Really weird and annoying!
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, John
Here are a couple of things to try (if you have not already done so):
1. Run scandisk/checkdisk
2. Run defrag
3. Check to see what applications launch on start up. If you re-installed a ton of applications (Office, for example) these may be launching their quick starts on boot; also review your Anti-Virus's settings.
First time I have asked a question so hope someone can help. Can't identify when it first started to happen but recently all excel files seem to have converted to word files. If word is already running and I try to open an excel file it opens in word and office tries to reinstall.
All excel files are displaying as word files in my documents folders. if I open excel and then open the files they do open and I can then save them in the correct format and they stay in that format.
Hope this makes sense.

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop. A couple of days ago I tried to open an excel file that I regularly use and when I opened it, all cells were blank except A1. In it was "FileError_22001. I start to investigate and every excel file is the same. Furthermore, all of my word & picture files have the same problem. All my excel files are 18 KB, all my word files are 20 KB. They are all time stamped with the exact same time.
I have McAfee that is provided by my employer but I discovered that it had not been updated in some time for some unknown reason. I called our IT folks yesterday morning and they tried to get me fixed but were unable to and had to pass the ticket up to the next level. They were unable to get the virus stuff working again either.
Whatever I got infected with turned off my McAfee firewall, then started corrupting all of my excel, word and picture files. It did not corrupt any files in my recycle bin. I tired to do a system restore to the day before the problems started but it didn't help. Turns out whatever got loaded probably happened the day before all the bad stuff started happening. So, I unrestored the restore that I did the first time and did a system restore to December 1st instead. It did not help and created more problems for me. I keep getting these pop ups, one after another.
I would attach screen shots of the errors but I can't figure out how to do it.

I have a laptop with Vista 64 and use Microsoft Office 2007. Within the last few months I noticed that attachments to email no matter what client I use cannot be opened. I have attached a jpg file that shows the verbiage of the actual error. This one was through Lotus notes but it doesnt matter if I am using outlook or gmail it always generates something similiar. Hopefully someone has some ideas so I can rectify this situation. I have tried numerous solutions and have not had any luck in resolving this problem.

i am running win xp pro. i have office pro 2003 installed with all the latest updates. The problem comes when i try to open a word or excel file from my desktop or even one of my other drives. Meaning just being able to double-click on the document and having it open. When i do this the folder that the document is in wont respond. Then the folder freezes and i must use task manager to close the folder. Keep in mind that i DONT receive any error messages when double clicking the the file.
i can however, go into start >programs >microsoft office > (word or excel) and open the program there, then open the document. but i shouldnt have to do this.
i have tried to run the repair to no avail. i have uninstalled and then reinstalled office with no luck. Norton windoc found problems (missing files) with my .net framework, so i uninstalled and then reinstalled that. That fixed the .net missing files but not my office problem.
Help me please cuz this has a tendency to be very frustrating!!!!! Tendency meaning every time i try to use the program.

I want to insert Word and Exel documents into Publisher so that I can crop them to irregular shapes. The crop tools are only available when a picture is inserted. I need to know if there is a way to save Word/Excel in different formats so that they can be treated as pictures for manipulation purposes. It would help if they would also open in PSP as that would give me some more options.

I have Microsoft Office XP Pro on my computer. I am having this problem with one of my files. It was originally a web page and I saved it as a Microsoft Word file on my computer. Well, every time I open this document and then close Microsoft Office, it asks me to save it even if I have made absolutely no changes to the file whatsoever. What is causing this and how can I fix it?
There's probably some type of link in it, like to a web or something, perhaps an updateable date field?
When something like that is opened, it updates, and then it thinks its changed.
Hi, I just uninstalled something related to Microsoft Office and now I can't seem to open any .docx files in my documents anymore. I am currently using Microsoft Word Starter 2010. The only way I seem to be able to open the files in my documents folder is opening Microsoft Word Starter 2010 first then go to file -> open the .docx file. If I try opening it directly from my documents folder without opening Microsoft Word Starter 2010 first, there's a popup that says "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel." Is there a way to fix this? Thanks in advance!

I had 2 files saved in microsoft word. They were for a cd label program. The files were print.doc and demo.doc. They have disappeared and I don't know where too find them or how to get them back on my computer again. Can anyone help? Thank you
Look in the recycle bin in case they were accidentally deleted. If they aren't there, go to Start>>Find>>Files Or Folders and look for print.doc in C:\ and do the same with the other file. If its not there its gone for good. Also open MS word and at the bottom File Menu there is a list of recently opened documents and you can look for it there.
I have a spread-sheet done in Microsoft Excel 2003, but I was wondering if it was possible to do something a bit clever with it.
What I have in the spread-sheet is two work-sheets (the tabs down the bottom of the screen). Now, one of these work-sheets is a list of DVD's that I want to buy, and the other is a list of DVD's that I already have.
What I want to do is to have something on the work-sheet of DVD's that I want to buy where I can check them off, or press a button, or something, when I buy them, and then it removes itself from that list and adds it to the bottom of the second work-sheet (with the DVD's that I already have).
I hope that makes sense! Any help would be appreciated.
