# robocopy backup of important files

Q: robocopy backup of important files

hi,

I have a standard Windows 10 build and I'm using robocopy to backup my data to an external drive. The goal is just to capture all my data so if the PC fails/gets stolen etc. I can restore my data on to another PC.

I'm doing a backup of c:\users\ as this seems to capture all my data. Are there any other folders you think I should backup?

I've excluded the 'AppData' folder as this seems to have a lot of stuff which is not data. Is that OK or do you think that should be backed up? Are there any other folders you think I should skip?

Thank you very much for your comments.

New user here in the forum,

I frequently backup files for other users and start w/ a new clean OS. I tried looking for some articles online, but none were really informative for me - wasn't what I was looking for. I was wondering if I could get some help here. Doesn't really matter the OS, mostly XP, Vista, or even Win7, but I guess the file structure btw. Vista and Win7 arn't really much diff.

Here is where I look to backup files:

C:\ --- sometimes I see users save some personal files at the root.

C:\Users\myprofile
Desktop
My documents
Music
Videos
Favorites
My Pictures
etc.

There are some software like (that save their files in Program Files or AppData):
Firefox
Outlook
Mozilla Thunderbird
iTunes
FlipShare
etc

Let me know if you can think of other places. Hopefully this post could help others in backing up essential directory locations.

A:Where do I look to backup important personal files?

Not sure I understand the question but basically what you want to back up I think would be the entire "User account" so it would be something like C:\users\name of user account and you back up the bolded part and everything below that and that should give you all the user settings and data for those programs as well as all the user's data files like music, videos, pictures, documents, etc.

Appdata is a hidden folder just one level below the user account so that will get backed up by backing up the user account.

But the proper method to back up, imo of course, is to use an app like Acronis TIH or equivalent and just back the whole system up to an external drive or media, so that if something real bad happens to the main drive, it can be swiftly and easily restored, if necessary to a replacement drive. I additionally go a step further and also make sector by sector clones of my entire main drive to a back up drive. With clones, there is no need to restore, so one possible link in the recovery chain that can break is eliminated. But compressed image backups have certain advantages too, so that's why I do both.

Hi,
I was reading yesterday that if I want to restore a file, I need to go to the file and right click and select restore. If the file does not exist anymore then one would go to the directory where the file originally was and select restore (or something to that effect).

I have two disks and I want to save some important files from one disk to the other. I have always used W7 Backup but now I am not sure I am doing the right thing. What would happen if my main disk crashed and there was absolutely no hope of salvaging it? Could I still restore from the back up made by W7 Backup? I won't know the file names or directory structure if one disk goes down completely.

Thanks.
David.

A:Will W7 Backup of my important files help me if my Disk Crashes?

Hi David,

There are a couple ways you can do it. The first, is when you use Windows Backup and Recovery make sure the create a system image is checked. That system image can be used to recover your OS and any files on the drive to a new HDD should the old HDD crash. Also, if you look at the upper left hand corner of the Backup and Recovery screen you will see the option to create a system image. You can use that also, which is what I do, to create a system image of my C drive. You also have the option to include any other partitions that you want to backup. After the image has been created, preferably on a second HDD, it will ask if you want to create a Recovery Disk. I would highly advise that you do, as this disk can be used to boot up from and then restore image if your HDD is unbootable. There are other third party imaging programs like Macrium Reflect, or Eaeus Todo Backup, or Acronis True Image that can be used for the same purpose as Windows System Imaging.

Evening all,

Just curious to know if anyone uses the built in utility to backup software on your machine, im trying to backup my itunes folder to an external HD but having a few issues to get this to work properly! I also use sync toy for backing up but just really want to know what everyone else uses?

As for image backups you cant beat Macrium Reflect imo

A:Anyone use robocopy to backup?

I don't use it myself, but have you tried the Robocopy GUI? On the same site there is a write-up of the RichCopy tool.

I haven't tested RichCopy on Win7 but I have tested the Robocopy Gui and it works fine.

EDIT: I just downloaded and installed RichCopy and it appears to be working fine in Win7.

I have created a batch file for copying my Documents folder to an external hard drive:

Quote:

The log file shows that it is backing up C:\users\USERNAME\documents\My Music and C:\users\USERNAME\documents\My Pictures.
That's fine, because I want those backed up anyway, but when I go to J:\desktop-backup\Documents, the Music and Pictures folders aren't there (or anywhere else on the J: drive).
I have "view hidden files and folders" turned on. It seems that the files are actually there because my Documents folder is only 700MB, yet several GB have been taken up on the J: drive.
Anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks.

Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone might be able to shed some light on why I am getting the following such errors when running a robocopy batch file (as administrator) which cause the backup script to stall (- albeit temporarily):

I am using the following backup command:

Code:
robocopy "%srcPath%\My Documents" "%dstPath%\My Documents" /b /v /ts /fp /bytes /tee /e /dcopy:t /copy:dt /a-:sh /xf desktop.* /np /log+:%logPath%\mwk1log.txt
I realise that if I limit the retries and wait time from the defaults the stall time will be shortened and the file(s) skipped. However, that does not resolve the issue why robocopy is having a problem copying the file(s).

I have found that if the erroring files are moved from the source location to the desktop, the following errors arethen recorded in the log:

Hi,

I have seen instances of a bug with the dcopy:t switch - try the script without that switch. You could also try the COPY:DATSOU switch, although I'm unclear if that copies the folder time stamps too.

Code:
robocopy "%srcPath%\My Documents" "%dstPath%\My Documents" /b /v /ts /fp /bytes /tee /e /copy:dt /a-:sh /xf desktop.* /np /log+:%logPath%\mwk1log.txt

Hey all,

Well this place helped me write my first cmd script so i would like to share it with you all and hope you enjoy it.

This particular script allows you to back up selected files or folders from a client computer through to a server after answering a couple of questions.

Its a great script but unfortunantly i have no need for it as it does not meet our requirements any more (note i only wrote it last week ).

The script comes with a backup version, and a restore version... so the theory is that you can back up selected files and folders from one client to the server, then restore it from the server to a new client, all with simple prompts.

I have also commented throughout the batch file as much as i could so hopefully it should be fairly easy for any admin guys using it.

The items it backs up are:

My documents
Desktop
Favorites
All pst files on the system
NK2 file - outlook file that remembers email addresses when creating new email and entering email it automatically suggests previously used email addresses
Outlook signatures

Its easy to add extra things to this script aswell. Also it is fairly easy to create it to do all of the backups without any prompts...

basically this is a batch file that is simple, but i spend a day or so writing it, and im proud of my crappy script so if anyone can find any use for it please do try it.
(now i just have to work out how i upload it)...

Thank you and commends are definately welcome

Ivan

Hi,

I'm new to using robocopy but I have used it for awhile with a couple of external drives to keep them in sync but using a simple command like:

robocopy g: f: /E /R:2

this copies everything from the g: drive to the f: drive including empty directories and tries 2 times for failures.

On my desktop which is a XP Pro machine as well, I've installed the Windows Resource Kit Tool which includes robocopy and am trying to do a similar thing to copy my "My Documents" directory on my c: drive to my k: drive which is an external drive on my mionet network. The copy does work fine but each time I run the robocopy command, a large number of the files get copied even though they haven't changed. I'm sure that I'm just missing something but I've tried adding things to the command line to not copy older files. Here's something that I have tried:

robocopy "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents" "K:\ImageThat\My Documents" /E /R:2 /XO /A-:A

each time that I execute this command, I get about 800 files that get copied and I don't understand why. Anyone see anything that I'm missing, or perhaps the way that I am understanding how robocopy works is the problem.

The default copy switch of robocopy is /COPYAT if you don't specify any copy options. This is the code I'm using:

robocopy C:\ D:\Backup RAMDisk.img /copyall /R:5 /W:15 /V /log:\Users\Kevin\Desktop\robocopy_log.txt

The RAMDisk.img file that I'm copying is a compressed image file. Now with that syntax /COPYAT will be used which means that it will copy all attributes of that file. Whenever I run this, I successfully copy the file but it doesn't retain the compression attribute of that file.

What could be wrong with this? Both source and destination are NTFS-formatted.

A:Backing up files using Robocopy

Although compression is indicated via a file's attributes, I'm not sure if that particular property actually transfers with the copy, even with Robocopy. If you copy to a compressed folder (folder and contents) then I would think the copy would be compressed. And if that folder is not compreesed, files that are placed there will be uncompressed (even if you are copying a compressed file to that location).

Our Windows 7 backup machine uses robocopy to differentially refresh a file server backup each evening. Unfortunately, users use Microsoft Outlook with PST files, which are locked by Outlook. I often noticed that when users had not closed Outlook by the
time the backup reached their PST file, robocopy failed to update the file.
I thought that was a non-issue since such cases only happen to about 2 users each day, but I had the surprise to discover that when robocopy fails to update, it deletes the outdated files (/MIR implies /purge).
Do others get the same result? If so, can this be avoided? I did not find any option to ignore locked files in the documentation. I suppose this would not happen without /purge, but /purge is somewhat necessary (a simple directory rename could otherwise
largely inflate space usage).

I'm using robocopy (ver XP010) on a Windows XP laptop to copy user files to another drive for backup.

robocopy "c:\my documents" "Z:\myname\my documents" /XO /M /ZB /E /MIR /log:c:mylog.txt /TEE

It creates all of the directories and subdirectories but doesn't copy any of the files. The log shows no errors - total dirs 162 copies 162, total files 1458 skipped 1458.

To minimize variables I tried using a new usb external NTFS hard drive (Z) but it still skips all of the files. I've verified the permissions and owership of the files and everthing seems in order. The problem is limited to this computer, the other computers in the group are OK. Any suggestions?

I just found out that 2 of the 6 computers in this group fail so I will be compairing files and permissions etc. to see what the two failed ones have in common against the working ones.

Hi, I just started using Robocopy to backup my files to my JBOD recently and I noticed that it does not copy anything in My Document folder. Here is the result log for Robocopy regarding the backup.

Even though it says that it copied 22831 files the destination folder says it has not been modified at all.

The strange thing is that when I was checking back on the progress in the cmd window, it showed that it was copying files. The problem is I have no idea where those files went, the files that were supposedly copied aren't there at all. Here is the script I used to back up my files.

Hi

I've just re-organised my hard drives and I've set up a batch routine to backup my files, using Robocopy.

However, as I swapped my drives around, I've copied in the wrong direction. Robocopy has consequently deleted entire folders of important data.

The data isn't in the recycle bin.

What should I do to try and recover the data?

Thanks

A:Used Robocopy and deleted my files - how can I recover them?

Is the partition unharmed and still visible in Explorer and Windows Disk Managment?

If it's unharmed, I'd consider PhotoRec or Recuva to recover the files. Both are free.

Ontrack Easy Recovery Professional is also said to be excellent, but I think you ultimately have to pay. Maybe $79?? It will show you the files it can recover, but won't let you actually recover them until you pay. I'm assuming Robocopy doesn't have any type of "undo" capability. 5 more replies Answer Match 55.44% Hello all, I need to robocopy many files which starts with the same name for Example (Ari, Arit, Ariel, Arik, Aris) I tried robocopy source_file\ari*.* destination_file\ari*.* however it is nto working do someone can help with that. Hi all
I have just found Robocopy and it seems the perfect tool for what I am trying to do....
I make an incremental Backup on one of my PC's (Called Server-PC) every day using AOMEI backupper and I want to mirror that folder on my main PC I have been fiddling with Robocopy for hours now have Googled everything I can think of and can't find out what I am doing wrong.

First of all I Mapped my E:\ drive on My Main PC onto my Server-PC and called it Z:
Using this script --- robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "Z\ServerDriveCopy" /R:5 /s /purge /COPYALL as a test I Get
Source : D:AOMEI\
Destination : C:\Users\mike\Desktop\Z\ServerDriveCopy\

It starts and then says "There is not enough space on the disk" There is still 700gb empty on the disk! I have checked if Quota's have been enabled and they haven't so can't work this out!

I just found out there is a GUI for Robocopy so I tried that and made a slightly different script:
robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "Z:\ServerDriveCopy" /MIR /S /V /NP /Z /R:10 /W:30 (The only difference is the colon after Z !
and that goes MAD keeps repeating in the cmd window forever but no error message and no files get copied.

So I tried it without using the mapped drive which gives me :
robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "\\Main\e\ServerDriveCopy"
I can drag and drop files in explorer OK so I am stumped.

If any one can help I would be very grateful
Mike

Last week I used a robocopy tutorial on this site to create a backup script, and it was working fine. Today I tried to run this script, inputting new destination information but leaving everything else the same, and now it is copying all of the folders, but none of the files.

It counts a total of 509 Dirs but 0 files--no skipped, no mismatch, no failed.

My syntax/options are as follows:
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" /E /tee /log.Public_backup log.txt
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" /E /tee /log.Training_backup log.txt
pause

Does anyone see what might be causing this problem or have suggestions?

The source folder is directory:\folder and the destination folder is directory:\folder\subfolder\subfolder, if that matters.

A:Issue with Robocopy only copying folders, not files, in Windows 7

It should default to all files (*.*), but you could put the *.* in the command to see if it makes a difference.
i.e.
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" *.* /E /tee /log.Public_backup log.txt

If that doesn't work can you post the actual commands you are using, with the real folder names ?

Started using robocopy to do my backups. In my command lines, i can specify directories on a external drive to backup to.Some directories show up and i see everything. My most important directory " my documents" DOESNT SHOW UP. I have confirmed a backup is occuring, via log file and properties on the backup folder. I edited it down to a backup of only that folder. Log file shows good, external drive shows the "backup" root directory and properties ( size, number of files) match log file. Open up the backup folder, NOTHING LISTED. I have to run the script as adminstrator , my user is admin also, but if i run it as myself, it cant access the folder. I think im dealing with a right issue, i have edited security on the external drive, even reformatted it , still nothing shows up.

A:Backup files fail to backup files in Program Files

Hi

Backup doesn't usually back up a program's files. Since Programs need to be "Installed", it makes no sense to simply back up the program's "program files" folder if no User data is stored in such folders. Since that folder would be fully rebuilt upon it's reinstallation, why does a backup need to be made of it?
I tested this also, and while a backup file was created, the zip folder was empty as was yours.
But again, backing up such a folder makes no sense and is a waste of space in the backup file, so it only makes sense that certain file types are excluded from being backed up.

I looked in my download folder and there are some files that didn't download (KSa01056, NSa02428, KOao00908,and GAa03124). I don't what they are but they're pretty big files and weren't there before. I wanted to know if I could delete them, since I can't even open them.

A:are these files important?

I do not know what they are...but you can try deleting them to your recycle bin and for awhile and see if everything that you have runs OK...then you can delete them from your recycle bin..

Hello everyone ..

I hope this is my last resort of finding the right way to get back may files ..

If you guys dont help - I dont think anyone will ..

Lets start from the begining:
I had a directory (folder) on my Hard drive in which I had folders encrypted with XP encryption. I used my account which has Administator rights. (not the default administrator acount)

I connected my laptop (with standard net adapter) and tried to copy the encrypted files to the laptops drive. And I got an error message.
Then is when I discovered that my Encrypted files are no longer accesible by me. I couldnt change or read them. Nothing!
I can not even change the encryption settings (key not trusted)
These files remained out of limit to acount that I was using all along, and who had the ownership rights!
But Ive done nothing wrong to make my files lock for the acout that made them encrypted.

I tried many things ...
- backing up the files, and coping them to another drive.
- backing them up to a FAT32 partition - nothing.
- using default admin acount.
- coping my key to a file, and adding it in console ..
....

nothing helped!

Please note that I didnt format my disk, changed system files, install new operating system .. I even didnt add new users. So the keys could be lost... I thinks they are someplace on the drive, but are they?

Files remain locked ..
(some of the encrypted photos show on the thumbnail and some dont, why?)

Somehow I managed to delete some major files. I'm running Win98. When I go to control panel and try to access any of the icons I get an error the "rundll32.exe is linked to missing export kernel32.dll:ActivcteActCtx
Before I got this error I was getting rundll.exe was missing. I copied that file from my laptop (runs XP). Obviously I messed up but don't know what to do next without making things worse.
Thanks for any ideas.

I use Windows XP Pro on my office computer. Its not permitted to have internet connection so i cannot do any online fixes.
I noticed a warning mentioning a kavo.exe(virus) application so i ran my antivirus/antispyware and they detected 100+ infected files. I deleted them all. Now my windows is not operating properly.
So far this is what i've noticed to be malfuntioning
1. I cannot open my harddisk by doubleclicking them. if i do, a prompt would open asking me what program to use to access it.
it has affected both partitions.
2. The 'Show hidden files' option in Folder Options isnt working.

I've tried using System Restore but it didnt work
worse thing is, my PC detected the kavo.exe again.

Will i be able to save my drive without reformatting?
Also, i need to know if i can Repair my Windows OS

I went to access important files today for my University course and they have disappeared. Recently i had a problem with a "virus" which was self replicating and McAfee Security Centre 2007 kept catching it, but after 2 full scans no viruses were found.

Here is a link to the virus McAfee found repeatedly as it self-replicated: http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/defau...virus_k=141178
Attached is a screenshot showing the first report of the virus.

Also the virus alerts came completely out of no-where, at the time i wasn't even using the computer it was just connected to the University network, and i never get viruses because i scan files before using them and am generally cautious.

Files are missing in some areas, but not others. Half of my installers are also missing, which is a pain. I tried to use "eDATA Unerase", which i found on download.com, but i only recovered a few files and those are corrupted and do not open.

I have a system restore point at the end of January, but i am unsure whether restoring would bring back the files. One thing i have not tried is restarting the PC, but i am unable to do that at the moment due to a large file download.

What i need to know is:
1. Why and where did the files go?
2. Am i at risk for more missing files?
3. How can i get them back for free?

Thanks for any help, Jamie.

hello & welcome to TSF ,

the more you use your pc the less chance of recovery

there are many programs here that you can use / some are

freeware

shareware

full paid versions

you will have to decide what type you use

also remeber that you only get what you pay for

but i have found that many freeware programs can do the job

What are the most important .dll files Windows use?
I'm making a Uplink like hacking game and one of the feature i'm working on would allow you to "destroy" a machine by deleting key Windows .dll files.
The problem is, I'm not quite sure what those files are.

So far all i have is Kernel32.dll.
What else could i add?
Thanks.

I know this will look like a topic that has been asked and answered before but it isn't.
My old SATA HDD got the blue screen of death and nothing I did could repair it. I decided to take the Eide drive from another computer in the house so I wouldn't lose my valuable tax and genealogy files on the SATA drive.

I installed the Eide drive made it drive "C", formatted it, put in all the drivers and everything on it is hunky dorey... then I went to "My computer" clicked on drive "D" (my old SATA drive) and the only folder is "Windows" none of my other folders or files can be seen.

And please no lectures on how I should have backed up the files, I have, many times but now that I need them, none of the latest backups can be found. No one in the house knows where they are... so the SATA hard drive is my last chance at salvation.

I assume that since I did not format this drive and it still says that the drive is using 111g of the 120g it had, that the files are still there. I just can't get them to appear so I can copy them.

Alright, what are the important files? (Picture a small, stupid child, although I am 59 with a Master's Degree in Librarianship. Also redheaded, busty, wealthy, and wild. No, I lied. Small, stupid, child.)

I can understand backing up all my 'My documents'.
What about all the adjustments, choices, changes that I've made over the years that various computer software has prompted me to do? Such as my choices for my nVIDIA graphics card? My choices for AVG Internet Security? And so on?

What are the important files?

Thank you.

A:Backing up important files: Which ones?

The very best idea is to back up everything. You will need some place to do that, so a second hard drive or an external hard drive.

Then, you make an "image" of the entire hard drive. When it fails, you can then restore Windows, all your programs, settings, and everything else. You can also recover copies of files from the image without restoring the whole thing to a drive.

Free drive backup software (imaging, cloning, and archiving):

Paragon Backup & Recovery
Macrium Reflect (Free)
O&O Disk Image Express
Easeus Todo Backup
Redo Backup & Recovery (Boot CD)
Comodo Time Machine (Complete system, files, programs, and settings restoration, but not "bare-metal" for failed drive)
Clonezilla Live (A bootable CD of Debian with Clonezilla.)
Drive Image XML
PING (Partimage is not Ghost) (Boot CD with option Clam Antivirus)
Partition Saving
Clonezilla

There are also many commercial products with more features.

Otherwise, it is very hard to say. If you don't back up everything, you will always miss something that you wish you had kept. But saving everything in Docs will at least save all your personal files.

Hi, new to the site, hoping someone can help me. My sister's computer crashed, and I have been working on it. She wasn't concerned about losing much, except for her baby's pictures and some text files. Everything else could be replaced. So, I slaved her hard drive to mine and copied all of the pictures into a folder on my desktop. No problem.
Today, when I was working on my computer, my system froze up and rebooted itself. When it was back on, ALL of the files in my folders on my desktop were GONE. The folders were still there, but the pictures and music files were missing. Including my sister's pictures. Also, the login screen turned into a little blue Windows XP box, nobody else's login name was there. All the programs on my startup screen were there, but when I hovered my mouse over them it said "empty" ???
I fixed the logon screen, and uninstalled/reinstalled the programs I wanted to keep and got rid of the rest (computer needed a thorough cleaning anyway). I can handle all that hassle. What I cannot handle is the loss of those baby pictures. If I don't get them back, my sister will never talk to me again, or at least make me suffer horribly.
I tried restoring, no change, and I tried file recovery programs, also no luck (on both my hard drive and my sister's). I cannot understand where those files went. I can't see them just up and disappearing, but I have had no luck searching for them.

Hello all, I am as my tag implies a dj, in fact I am a very scared dj right now. I have over 16 gigs of mp3's on my hard drive, 90% of them were scanned in over 5 yrs ago by myself. My problem is this, I began to update my mp3 collection last week and noticed much to my horror that while the mp3 file name remained intact the actual file itself was completely changed, not only was it the wrong song, it started at odd points of the wrong song. I am somewhat unsure as to whether this is a hardware (HD) issue or whether it has more to do with software. I have run Norton and it came up with no known virus so basically I am stumped.

All I know is that it took me the better part of a year to install these songs and now it seems as if I am losing them one by one. My first thought was that perhaps the files were degrading due to age, but that is not the case as the same thing happened to a brand new file I added last week.

A:important mp3 files changing themselves

It still sounds like a virus. Do you have any mixing or other software that may have modified the files in some way? Get a free online scanning program like AVG at www.grisoft.com and try it again...

Could be another component like bad memory. If you want to keep them from "degrading" any further make all of your MP3 collection read-only. GO into windows explorer and select all files with the MP3 extension, right click and select properties and change the file attribute to read-only.

Not very sure that the following will help, but no harm in trying.

Download the portable (self-extracting) Glary Utilities 6169KB, Glary Utilities Builds - Clean Registry, Fix PC Errors, Protect Privacy | Glarysoft on a different PC and extract it to a pendrive. Plug in the pendrive on the PC on which you want to recover the Download folder and run Integrator_Portable.exe. Under File Management, click on Restore deleted files, scan your drive, check whether you can find the files in good condition to copy it. Copy it to some other location/ folder on a different external drive/pendrive and then move/copy it to the original location.

Guys, I really don't know where this belongs so please bear with me.... I brought a dell laptop last summer and to be blunt, it blows. I hate the thing, and am kind of glad its gone into the shitter. Now, I have about 40 GBs of files on this laptop that I NEED. They are work/school related and I absolutely refuse to take any action with this PC before I can preserve these files. Heres the problem, this laptop is suffering hardware (I think) damage but I am no expert, why do I think its hardware? Well in my rage yesterday I got so fed up with the thing that I smacked it around for a few minutes. Before it was working good enough, but now it is so slow and takes forever to get past the Windows XP screen etc. This computer needs to be repaired, but I will not send it in yet because I know I will lose my files. Now, yesterday I brought an external HD and tried to transfer my files onto there, it kind of worked, but some of these files give me an error message and won't allow me to put it on the HD. I forgot the exact language of the error but it has something to do with a corrupt file and is supposedly common when trying to do this, one file will work then the other wont, it has nothing to do with the file because these files can be viewed and opened fine on the original PC. With that said, I KNOW that these files could be put on put onto a DVD with no problem... but the problem is, my DVD drive won't intialize. I put a disc in and nothing comes up. I go to My Comp... Pssst. Forgive me this is my first post on here and I hope its in the right location.

Anyway. I have a Toshiba Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit laptop.
It started malfunctioning really badly, to the point where we pretty much lost a lot of programs and such. It was the work of a very impolite virus.

We managed to get rid of it, I think, but now, every single important file of ours is transparent. Pictures files we're able to double click on and see, but we can't scroll through. At first I just thought the computer was being sketchy. When you bring your mouse over the file that has all our important stuff, it says "Folder is Empty"

So I decided to transfer all via a USB port, to move them from my sister's Toshiba to mine. Everything moved like normal, we had to wait a few minutes because there was a lot of file transfer.

But when I plug in the USB port into the other computer, it says my USB port is empty. It says nothing is there. I am extremely confused and I would like any suggestions any at all. I tried doing a document restore thing from the command prompt but was bombarded with "Access Denied" a few times.

I'm very young though, just a teenager, so I'm not a real expert. But any kind of help about making my files normal again so we can save them would be most appreciated. We don't really care about the well-being of the Toshiba at this point. We just want to save all our files. Thank you!

Hey all,

Recently I've been cleaning up my PC (64-bit Windows 7, HP Pavilion dv6, AMD processor), and, thanks in part to reading these forums, managed to remove malware that was preventing Windows Firewall from starting and sfc /scannow from running all the way through. However, after running sfc /scannow I got a message saying "windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some". I've already run chkdsk. Could you help me determine if I need to take action to repair these files or just let it go for now? My system is running fine at the moment (to my knowledge).

Here are, from what I can tell, the three files in question from the log:

I used this program called EasyCleaner and I deleted "unnecessary files". Turns out, I think I deleted some really needed files; something in the folder MSO-CACHE or something. I tried system restore, it didn't work. I tried to restore to an earlier time, it wouldn't let me click next! I also deleted some "invalid" registry entries and it might have screwed my computer up even more.I lost all my firefox bookmarks. My firewall sometimes stops working. Some of my programs can't open. My computer is lagging soooo much. I have a log of deleted registry entries, I think. The program allows you to "undo" them, but because I deleted those "unnecessary files", I think it won't allow me to undo the changes. I would add them back in manually, but that would take forever and I would only do it if it was the last thing left to try.My CD-ROM drive doesn't work, and I was supposed to write something itno a CD really soon. this is horrible *sobs*Anyone know how I can fix this =( If not, I'll have to go to GeekSquad or something haha (but I'll have to pay money -_-)another option may be to reisntall all my programs but ugggggggggh....... any help? i practically live on my computer.Moderator Edit: Moved topic to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

If the files are damaged...the typical thing to do is to remove them and replace them undamaged copies.

I would try uninstalling the printer drives...then reinstalling same.  They may be creating the problem with WMI.

If files are damaged...what's the point of allowing them to remain in the system, causing problems?

I'm preparing to upgrade from Windows 2000 professional to XP. I would like a perfect backup of my C: drive in case the worst happens and XP kills my computer (so I can revert back to 2000 and my old system without a problem). I have 2 hard drives so I have the room to put an exact image of my C: drive onto the slave drive. Just wanting to get some feedback as to the best way to do this.

So far I just used the "backup now" option in Windows 2000 and saved a .bkf file of my entire drive to the slave. It actually didn't take up that much space--the .bkf must contain some sort of compression.

Anyway, is this the best way to go about protecting myself or would it be worthwhile to instead invest in a 3rd party backup program instead before undertaking this? There are tons of programs out there of course, Norton Ghost, Backup Now, GoBack, or what have you. If Windows' option works well I don't know why people would buy a 3rd party program but I hear about it a lot so I thought I'd ask. Anyone ever restored an entire system from a windows .bkf file before and had difficulty? Protecting myself is pretty important to me.

A:Computer backup before upgrade to XP--backup software suggestions,.bkf files,etc?

With the windows backup you have to reinstall windows and then restore the backup to get back to where you were. I use and love ghost because it makes a 100% exact copy of EVERYTHING and all you have to do to get it back is to restore the image and you're up a going again - no need to reinstall windows. Is also fast and can clone one drive to another or create an Image file.

GoBack I don't like and Backup Now needs windows to be installed to restore the backup

I have a new HP Pavillion Elite HPE with 920 GB of memory running Windows 7. I am an average computer user. I have a WD external backup drive with 1TB memory. I don't like the backup software that comes with the computer. I can't access anything to see how old the files are. The only option is to restore. Thank God I haven't had to do that. I have the files important to me backed up manually. I tried Nova backup but all I had was a bunch (really- a bunch) of files again that I couldn't access. I had a copy of Norton Ghost that wouldn't work with my old XP computer so I tried it on this one. After days with support manipulating my computer, going through three people to the software engineer, they could not make Ghost work on my (64? whatever) computer.

I don't know if I need a mirror or clone or whatever I've been reading about that I don't understand. I have plenty of room on the backup drive and have CD's and DVD's that will restore, I think. Best Buy made me some when I bought it and the computer made me make some as well when I got home. I can manually do a system backup less my files that doesn't change. So what I really want to do is to find a software that will enable me to choose the files I want to that sometimes change (My Documents) and have those backup on a regular basis. I also want to have those so I can go to my M drive (backup drive) and see my files just like in windows explorer. That way, if anything does happen, I know my files are alright and if I have ... G'day everyone

Does anyone know of a simple backup program that is capable of backing up large files incrementally by splitting the file and backing up only changed parts of the file? The files I'm talking about are files that get altered by appending stuff at the end of the file, e.g. log files or mailbox files, so it's generally possible to split a new version of the file at the exact point where the old version stopped, purely by file size.

Specifically, I want to back up Thunderbird and SeaMonkey mailboxes without having to create additional subfolders within those programs.

I understand that if something had changed near the beginning of the file, then the whole file will have to be backed up, unless the backup program is capable of some very clever searching, but mostly the files will change only by having data appended to it.

Thanks
Samuel

A:Backup software that splits large files for incremental backup

You may want to rethink incremental backups. Where I worked, until I retired, we first used incremental backups for our servers. That seemed like a good approach - make an initial full backup on one day of the week and then only incrementals the rest of the week. That allowed smaller backups however when it came time to restore it was a nightmare making sure the incrementals were installed in the proper order, and it took much longer to restore. A decision was made to only do full backups every night and although the backup was bigger if a restore was needed there was no confusion on order of reinstall and it took less time.

I do the same thing with my own PC backups. I use Acronis True Image, which has incremental backup ability, but I only do full hard drive backups, to a separate hard drive.

1. I get the message "Windows can't update important files and services while the system is using them. Save any open files and restart the computer. and then try to check the new updates." and I am asked to reboot
2. Update history says Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.139.1946.0) Successful Important Date installed 14/11/2012 (today)
3. After restart: update history still indicates the above installation was successful yet there is also an indication that "most recent check for updates - never, updates were installed - never". Red x message tells me to check for updates again but then loop back to no.1 message.
4. Tried unchecking all services that were not Microsoft and restarted but problem remains.
Any way out of this loop? Thanks.

A:can't update important files and services while the system is using

First of all - reset the services to their normal settings.
then

Open Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Never Update...'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Now open Windows update again
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Update automatically'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Open Windows Update, and do a manual Check for Updates.

Just wondering how do you guys mark/identify more important folders and files? There might be many folders and files in a folder.

What I do is I put a dash at the beginning of file/folder name of the more important/frequently accessed files. Any other ideas? Thanks

A:What do you do to mark/identify more important folders and files?

Hello pcwin,

I suppose that you could change the folder preview image to something that makes the folder standout among the others. Of course you would need to use a medium, large, or extra large icon view to see it.

SO..I need some help

I have an HP Pavilion g6 laptop, and its been working great in the year I've had it. Yesterday, I went to do some DJing practice, and noticed that all my music was gone. All that was left was the sample music. Same thing with all of my pictures and video, gone. I restarted the computer and came back a day later to find everything was still gone. As a DJ, I've built up an extensive library of music, thousands of songs, so that really made me mad. Also I had about a thousand irreplaceable pictures and videos that I backed up from my old phone. Again, as these cannot be replaced, this made me really mad. I have NO idea what happened to the files. When I go into the libraries and look at music, or pictures, it just says that the folders are unavailable. I haven't been doing anything different with the laptop aside from syncing it with my Xbox for media. I'm totally clueless, but I need help, as music is my job, and I don't feel like downloading all that music again.

ANY help would be much appreciated

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows
Normally.

Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked) Start Windows Normally

Seconds until Windows starts: 30

I tried every option. Windows screen appears for brief seconds and then computer restarts. This continues over and over again until I turn the PC off. The BIOS screen appears. Haven't recently uploaded or changed software. I have no idea why this is happening. Months preceding this, the computer has shut off unexpectedly, but has always restarted normally. I haven't tried XP cd repair because I'm afraid of losing CRUCIAL files. Hoping to extract them safely before using Repair or Restore. Unable to run antiviral, spyware scans.

Thank you for your help!!

A:PLEASE HELP! Windows XP not starting up. VERY important files not backed up!!

You could remove the Hard drive, install it as a second HD in another computer or slave it via USB adapter and make a dvd or put files on a thumbdrive.

Or download and burn a linux cd? By making a Live CD, (boots up using the linux cd and computer ram) you should be able to access the files (without removing anything) you need to back them up to a thumbdrive.

Do you have a XP cd? supposedly performing a repair install shouldnt mess with your files and folders. I still would back up the computer, if at all possible first though.

Hi everyone,

Last night I installed Corel Painter IX and Adobe Photoshop CS2 and uninstalled the previous versions of the two programmes (Painter 8 and Photoshop CS). I test ran each programme and they were working perfectly, then I turned my PC.

I turned my computer on again today and was greeted with a black screen saying that the following file was missing or corrupt: c:\windows\system32\config\system

I've had this error about 5 times over the last 2 or 3 years (same computer, God it's slow now), each time it occurs when something's been uninstalled. I fixed the problem and restored the PC to 2 days ago before Painter IX and Photoshop CS2 had been installed.

The PC is working fine now, but the shortcuts for Photoshop and Painter aren't anywhere to be found, but the installed folders are still there. What's even more annoying is that the run files for the programmes aren't in the folders (I checked last night before it all went up the wall and they were there). I can't figure out where they've gone!

Can someone PLEASE help me get these run files back, the two programmes were needed for work and I can't do anything at home until I've got them up and running again!

Hi, as the title says I deleted important registry files. It was accidental, I wanted to uninstall microsoft office pro plus 2013(or something like that) with Revo Uninstaller Pro because I wanted to make sure nothing was left behind. However, after I deleted it with the scan for leftovers (it asks you if you want to delete leftover registry and then leftover files and folders) my computer started to **** up. My theme changed to the basic grey thing, when I want to navigate the Internet it doesn't work... I knew I did something wrong, so I wanted to restore my PC using system restore. However even that isn't working. When I go on the page after clicking on system restore, it gives me an error with about a shadow file or idk(I'm not on my PC right now because Internet doesn't work as said above). I can't even click on a restore point because of that error.

I can however boot normally so that at least is good. I am extremely confused!! Please help!
Is Revo uninstaller a good or bad thing considering what it did to my PC(or more what I did to it by trusting them)?

Thank you!

Hello all -

I have a bit of a problem. Last month my Emachine (tower) would not work anymore. There was no power going to the computer therefore impossible for me to get any data off at that time. I now have a HP labtop and am trying to transfer some of my files from the Emachine to the HP. I bought a DYNEX hardrive enclosure and hooked it up. I have looked everywhere on that hard drive and cannot seem to locate 10G of music, pictures and some very important files. I did go into documents and settings on the old drive and clicked on my user name to see if any information was there. It said the folder was empty and it gave me an error message as access denied. I also checked the space available and there is 18G used out of 20G which is the same as when it was working in my Emachine. Please help me!

Thank you all!

Hey everyone. I'm posting this on behalf of a co-worker whose computer recently got damaged.
Situation:
He had told me that a friend spilled a little wine on the counter which then seeped underneath it. After a day of air drying and after cleaning it- it turned on but it wouldn't load into Vista. It tried to do a startup repair.
He brought it into work when our IT guy was there. He did some stuff to it (not sure exactly what) and told my co-worker when it's done to type exit and then re-boot. He then told him if it doesn't load into Vista, he'll need to take out the drive, get a usb adapter and plug it in to another computer to retrieve the personal files (pictures, documents, audio, etc)

We never got it to load into Vista. So he bought an adapter. We plugged it into his XP machine at work and were not able to find any of his personal files.
We ran a search for just pictures on the drive, and it only pulled system images and pictures that come on the computer or with software, no pictures from a camera or anything.
I plugged it into my Mac, oddly a few additional folders were visible that weren't when plugged into XP- one was a folder called \$RecycleBin and another was the Documents and Settings folder, which was empty though.
No luck on a Mac finding any of the missing files.
I told him to try to plug it into a Vista machine and MAYBE other files or folders would be visible, but that I honestly wasn't very optimistic on that being the solution.

Hi MattD313,

You said you hooked it up to another PC and you cannot find the files you need? Hmmm... may be the files were already deleted. For one, someone had already tried to 'fix' it before you did. The bad thing about that is that you also do not know what that other person did in his attempt to repair it. If you can see other folders or files except the one your friend needs then I am inclined to believe they were deleted.

After doing a restore I lost some important emails. Is there any way to get them back? Can I restore my computer to an even earlier time? I did this, I thought it was an earlier time, but it may not have been. It may have been the same restore point in fact.

If I restored my computer to an even earlier time would this restore the emails I lost?

If not is there any other way to get the emails? My backup drive is my E: drive and I tried getting the emails from there, but you know how microsoft outlook is , i just don't know how to do it. Is there anything I can do?

Maybe a system restore? I haven't tried that, although it's been a little while, I'd hate to lose something else :(. It would be worth it though to get the emails back.

you should be able to reverse the restore if its what cause the lost of emails. However, normally your emails are safe during a restore.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. The end result is I need to recover the Documents and Settings folder on my HDD. Here is the scenario:

About two weeks ago, I came home to a dead computer. The fans were on in the case, but the monitor was off. Every time I rebooted, the same happened. I finally had to send my motherboard and CPU in. Intel sent me a warranty replacement Dual Core 2 2.4Ghz processor and ASUS sent me a new motherboard. However, it was not the original. It was the same type of board but the premium model (P5N32-SLI Premium, original was Deluxe) as they didn’t have mine in stock.

While I waited for the new components to arrive, I was able to hook up my old hard drive to my brother’s computer. The hard drive is a SATA Western Digital 250GB. I was able to grab a few files off but didn’t need any others at the time. Plus, the hard drive seemed to working fine so I had no reason to think it would be a problem to get files off in the future.

When I finally got the components back, I hooked everything up. The computer posted with no problem so I went through and configured the BIOS to my liking. Upon reboot, I received an error along the lines of “No Operating System” found. I rebooted but the same occurred. I then put in my Windows XP Pro CD thinking that maybe the new motherboard was giving Windows a problem. When I went through to choose the “R” Repair option (NOT Recovery Console), it should ask me which Windows installation I wou... Read more

Currently I am between personal computers for myself and am running all of my personal stuff on my Seagate 500 GB external USB harddrive on the family computer. (Windows XP, 80GB harddrive, 256 MB RAM, etc.) I'm a photographer and recently returned from a two week trip with a lot of photos, which I put onto my external drive (since that's where all my stuff is). I've been editing and uploading from there. When I'm done with the drive I always use the safely remove hardware tool. Half the time it doesn't seem to want to work and says "device can't be stopped, try later." I unplug it anyway, and there is never a problem. A few nights ago I was waiting for it to give me an answer (to either be safe, or give the error message). I waited longer than usual and nothing was coming up, so I unplugged it, and a second later it finally said it was safe to remove. The next day I was going to upload more of the photos, but was first going to go to the folder to look at some of them. Here's a quick overview of how I have my folders set up: On the desktop is a 'Pics" folder. In there is another 'Pics" folder among with other files. Inside that folder I have a selection of folders, including all photos from 2008 so far, ones that are edited and ready to print to different sizes, and one from my recent trip. Inside the recent trip folder I have folders dedicated to the different memory cards I used. Recently I have been working only in the folders dedicated to the cards. ... Read more

Hi, I have a Dell laptop Inspiron E1405 that unfortunately was infected with a virus. My cpu got infected because my virus protection McAfee expired. (Prior to that McAfee always blocked such threats to my cpu... I had my cpu for 3 yrs roughly) Anyways I scanned the latest McAfee virus scan I had which picked up alot of the infected files and quarantined them however there were about 6 files that could not be quarantined. These files were windows system 32 files and perhaps something else. Well being that McAfee located where the files were I went and located the file and simply deleted them by sending them each to the McAfee Shredder... which was a huge mistake in my fault because now my cpu turns on and I can log in but when I do that all I get is my screensaver background with no icons or anything else. Obviously I deleted some important system files and now I dont know where or how I can even recover such files. Moreover, I don't remember the files' names sad.gif and I don't even know if the virus is gone and my cpu is acting like that because of the files I deleted or because the virus got worse. I think it was the deleted files... can anybody please help?

A:Important system files I deleted due to infection by virus

Hi .

Sounds to me like a clean install would eliminate two problems: the malware and the missing system files.

Anything short of a clean install seems like it is likely to very hit-and-miss for an extended period of time.

If you have a Dell...don't you have restore/recovery capability of some sort?
