Hello,  I purchased an HP Envy Touchsmart 15 a little over a year ago. The hinge seems to have come unglued fromt the inside. I read that the HP Envy is prone to this, since the hinge is glued in production as opposed to being fastened with a screw. I'm a graduate student, and I'm unable to use my HP for schoolwork due to the faulty hinge. The computer has been handled carefully, and it's never been dropped. This is my first HP. It was great when it was working; however, a laptop that costs nearly a grand and works only for 1 year due to the construction is extremelhy dissapointing.  I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how it was handled by HP. I purchased it through costco, so I should have an extended 2 year warranty on the device.  Thanks in advance,  Alexandria

The hinge on the left side has popped up as the base of the metal hinge has separated from the frame. Laptop was puchased from Costco in 2012.

Bought Envy in December 2014.  At about 19 months I noticed the hinge was not working right and I found a small screw which fell out.  The hinge has gotten worse over the last month or so even though I  have been careful with it. I am the only user.  I saw many other posts about hinge problems on the envy.  Is Hp doing anything about this problem?  I believe its only a one year warrenty.  Am I SOL because of this?

Hello!I bought my computer about 11 months ago for college and the past month it has been having some weird cracking noises when opening/closing the lid. A friend of mine told me to watch out since he had the same computer and it had broken off. I noticed today that theroght hinge is actually starting to come out and the base of the computer is also getting loose. This is very strange since I barely move my computer from the desk since it is so big, plus I have a smaller one that I use to take to classes so I don't mess with this one for stuff that is unnecessary. I wanted to know how this can be repaired.Thank you!

Last year while my daughter was at school she started reporting to me that her HP Envy Touchsmart 15" laptop's case was pulling apart at the corners.  Then she started reporting hearing rattling noises inside the case, then the fan stopped working.   I called HP support, and was told by one person the laptop was under warranty, but that wouldn't be covered because of normal wear and tear.  I called back later and then was told the laptop was not under warranty.  I called back several times, and got a variety of answers all of which added up to between $300 and $500 for repairs on a laptop that I spent $700 on! When she came home for a break from school, I took apart the laptop and removed the debries from the fan (I had purchased a replacement fan which I didn't need) and the laptop stopped overheating.  Next I tackled the hinge problem which by this time had progressed to be both hinges.  The weak plastic connections on the bottom were in bad shape, cracked and peices missing.  So (being the brain surgeon I am ) I decided to use epoxy to more firmly affix the hinges to the case.  That fix has now failed. I have seen and posted on other threads that this type of failure is (despite what HP support says) fairly common in the whole line of HP consumer grade laptops!  Before this, I had mainly used HP business grade laptops and had thought that the quality there would also be in the consumer grade laptops.  My... Hello, I have had my laptop for over 2 years now. I have really been taking a great care of it and I have been more than satisfied with it until this week. One of the hinges suddenly cracked open. I did not drop it nor did I cause the damage. It really worries me that the hinge practically broke by itself and it seems as it is a common problem. I cannot close my laptop and I am afraid that my screen will get damaged if I don't get it fixed asap. And I really need my laptop for college and for work. I would love to hear from HP team on how to solve this problem quickly. So far I  have always recommended HP to my friends and I hope I will not have to change my opinion about it. Thank you for your consideration,Joanna

Hello,  I have noticed that my right screw connecting the hinge of my screen and base of the laptop has come loose after a while now. I tried to tighten it but it won't. I read a few articles with people of the same laptop series and it made me think that whether this is a manufacturer's defect or not.  There is also a piece which, by my guess, has broken off and is now loose inside the body of the keyboard as I can hear it when I move my laptop around.  Is there a way to get this repaired at a repair centre? Or a better and more precise diagnostic, as I am just basing this on what I have read and my guess as an engineer. Thank you!

The left hinge is broken on my HP Envy 17" Touchsmart notebook.  The bottom plastic casing is also coming away. It is hard to open and close the laptop without causing more problems and I'm worried about the screen cracking.  My local tech service has been trying to source replacement parts, but has found none available. They have identified that this is a common problem with this model, and I see there are hundreds of postings with the same problem.  Please could you help?

I notice many people have had problems like this with similar models. I'd like to know whether I'd need to pay to have it fixed again, despite it being the same problem that was supposed to be fixed. I have the order confirmations of the previous repair and can send that if needed. It is unacceptable to me to have such a fault laptop, considering how much importance it has for my school work. My left hinge has recently become visibly broken, with the top keyboard metal casing and the bottom black plastic casing becoming seperated near the hinge. I have also noticed the fan making rattling sounds as if broken pieces from the hinge have entered it. The right hinge also was slightly opening the case but tighting the screw on that side has kept that from reoccuring. Although I put in a new screw into the left hand side from enderneath the case, it has since fallen though into the casing or out completely due to the broken hinge part inside. I have seen many posts on here talking about a similar problem and many have been frustrated with the poor repsonse from HP who haven't wanted to repair the laptops for free in these cases, as this seems to be a design fault. I am no longer under warranty and do not have 100 + to fork out on a laptop which was roughly 800 RRP which is not even 2 years old due to a design fault. Is there any other way of repairing. Also, I had someobody look at this, and they say this can only be repaired with a new top case part number 720570-001.However, this isn't directly sold by HP at the moment, only through resellers and it seems that is roughly 180. Any help on this issue would be much appreciated as I am a student and tutor  and so I rely on this laptop very much and it is vital that it is working without issue at the moment as it is the middle of exam period. Regards,ARIA

I have the exact same problem that I had been hearing when using the PC for a whie, maybe 6 months or more, but did not actually see the issue until I had to take the case apart to replace a fan that had failed (according to BSOD). What turned out to be the cause of the constant clattering and the fan failure, etc. was the pieces of the base that ,once upon a time, held the fitting that the hinge screws went into. The aggravating thing about this is that I had a Care Pack that had just expired on 8/15 which I feel sure would have covered at least the fan replacement if not the required parts for the hinge. If anything is being done about this issue, please let me know

The left Hinge is pulling the upper portion of my wife's computer off , as the very heavy touchscreen applied too much torque to the notebook case . I have read in the forums that is is a very common issue with this model. My il-laws bought the same computer for my wife and her brother, and the same thing has happened to both computers. Is there any way this can be fixed? I have seen in the forums than many other people have this same problem, but I have not seen anyone post anything about any solutions to it. As you said this is a common problem with HP Envy's. I pulled apart my laptop to replace the fan in it and having the same problem as you j decided to take a look at it. What it was was a broken Skrew Hole (Sorry I'm having a mind blank) but where the skrew connects to the motherboard has been broken. This is a small peice of plastic. There is no real way of fixing this however there is actually a skrew right beside that one. Apart from when your moving the screen and the look of it, it woint damage your computer and nothing will come falling off it e.g screen, surround. I'm sorry but that's all the information/advice I can offer

I didn't really notice this problem until a few months after having this computer. I have been making bi-weekly payments on this wonderful laptop since fall of last year through a local Circuit World. I soon started to notice that even if I opened the laptop slowly or gently, there was this awful cracking noise coming from the computer. I had gotten used to it and assumed it was a minor thing, as I have experienced with other laptops in the past. It wasn't until I had run my hand over the left corner of the laptop that I noticed that the bottom cover had been starting to "pop out" or at least not connect itself correctly to the top cover as the right side did.  I have never once damaged this laptop via tossing, dropping or rough handling. This computer is very expensive and takes a lot from my budget, so I have made sure to take the most absolute delicate care of this computer, including handling and virus protection. Unfortunately, with this computer now being excessively harder to open than it should, and the damage that I'm afraid this left hinge is causing, it has become more than just a "little" problem to me, and I fear that it will only worsen over time. I've noticed that in another forum, a customer had their HP ENVY replaced, but I'm wary that I cannot recieve the same treatment because of my purchase throught Circuit World. I will talk to the employees at Circuit World about getting it fixed or getting a replacement if that applies to me, but for... Is the envy 13 d000 series all in aluminium? because i read some reaviews that the bottom case is in plastic thtat looks like aluminium

A:Is Envy 13 chassis all in aluminium?

Hi, From a preview: CaseIf a manufacturer of a premium subnotebook wants to be on the safe side in terms of the design, they just copy the design from Apple. HP does not make any experiments with the Envy 13 and follows the role model pretty closely ? and the result is appealing. The chassis is primarily made of brushed aluminum, which not only looks great, but it also hardly flexes under pressure. The bottom cover and the lid on the other hand are much more flexible (and feel more like plastic). There are no artifacts on the screen when you apply pressure at the back, but this Envy is not very torsion-resistant. Otherwise, there is not a lot to criticize about the build quality: The hinges are taut and only allow a slight wobbling of the screen, which can be opened up to 135 degrees. Small gaps support the generally decent build quality. Source: http://www.notebookcheck.net/HP-Envy-13-d000ng-Notebook-Review.156145.0.html You can feel much better with higher class/gtade machines called Spectre . Regards.

I have been dealing with a broken home on my laptop for more than a year. I just searched these forums and found ~70 posts all with the same issue. This seems to be due to poor design that never should have made it past the quality assurance engineers, having a metal hinge screwed into non-reinforced plastic. I find it reprehensible that a premium laptop was made so poorly. I am told by local PC repair shops that it will cost me $400+ to get this fixed. That's 1/3 what I paid for the machine in the first place.I tried calling support and was directed to log onto the support site for assistance, from which I was directed to search the forums. I thought HP made better products than this, but hadn't wanted to put up the money to get one to find out. Then I bit the bullet and got rewarded with a busted hinge on a laptop that spends its days being used by my wife at home, bring opened and closed 2-3 times per day. And now it seems like I'm going to get the runaround to get this fixed, or just have to trash an otherwise great machine due to crappy hinges. I love this laptop as far as performance and hardware specs go but it is a pain to open and close to try and avoid breaking the other hinge and essentially removing the screen.Any guidance on what I can do to get an actual answer or a case submitted to get any useful help?

The right hinge on my Envy 17 Touch Screen has failed, causing the case to become separated and the lid to be nearly impossible to close. This is the second Envy 17 to fail in this way. About a year ago my husband's broke and HP spent nearly three months attempting to repair it before finally just shipping him a new one. This appears to be a flaw in the construction of the hinge assembly, and we have noticed that the newer models, such as my husband's replacement, have a much improved design in comparison. We spent about $1,300 on this computer (it has an i7 Core and 16 GB of RAM) and hoped it would hold up for a while. The laptop was great, but now it has become difficult to use without fear of causing further damage. Thank you for any suggestions.

Greetings,    I have owned this laptop for over 2 years and have encountered many problems which have required me to open up my laptop and remove debree/dust from the interior. My last adventure included removing the fan and heatsink from the inside, but when I assembled the laptop back together it will not start up. When plugged in the white led light still shows next the the charger socket, but the power button will not light up after several tries. The fan does not start to spin either.   I have tried the hold the power for 1 minute idea, but it does not change anything.I have 3 possible conclusion that are very unlikly to me.1.  I worked on carpet and had static  electrickery! Doubt it.2. The harddrive is not working properly3. The memory is not working properlyAny fixes to these above? any other possible causes?

I own an HP Envy TouchSmart 15 Notebook PC product number: E0K05UA#ABA and Model: 15-j053cl

I had a couple plastic screw inserts that hold the right side hinge to the top cover of the laptop break due to very high strength of the hinges which caused the top cover of the laptop to pry apart from the base enclosure when opened (a problem many owners of this laptop model have had). Since I was out of warranty I ordered a replacement on Ebay using the correct part number 720570-001 and disassembled my laptop to make the repairs and loosen the hinges while I was at it. I swapped out all parts being careful to note where and how plugs and ribbons were connected so I could put it back together correctly. Now after having it reassembled it will not turn on.

I get a white LED light to turn on when I plug in the power cord AC adapter (should be amber/orange in color to signify it is charging the battery) but no other sounds lights or signs of life. I have attempted to remove the battery and power cord, pressed the power button for 8-30 seconds to drain power and do a reset and then try to power up with plugging in the power cord but it won’t turn on. I also tried to power up by removing one part at a time including the hard drive, two RAM sticks, and wireless card but still not able to turn on. Do you have any ideas for what may be wrong or steps I can take to troubleshoot? Is this possible a mother board issue? Everything was working fine before embarking on this r... Read more

Hi, I'm having troubles turning my laptop on. I have a Hp Envy 15 Touchsmart. I've tried doing a reboot by taking the battery out and holding power for a minute and trying to reboot it but nothing happened. It was plugged in and fully charged when it turned off. The charging light is still on when it is plugged into the wall.A few weeks ago it randomly restarted and shut off when I was watching a movie on it but it rebooted no problem. My phone fell out of my hand 3 nights ago and landed just left of the track pad when it shut off and won't turn back on.

When I open/close the laptop I feel the left back side shifting.  It looks like the hinge is shifting and then separating part of the upper case from the lower case.   I can push the pieces back in place but the next time I open/close the case the same thing happens.   I received the laptop in April 2014.  What steps do I need to take to get this repaired under warranty.  This is a HP ENVY 17t Quad TouchSmart Product number: E2E11AV. Thanks!!

I bought this laptop about 2 years back and while it was under warrenty had to have it fixed because of issues with the hinge, which, I understand is a common problem for the envies. After a year and a half of very delicate care and no longer under warrenty, the hinge is once again breaking down and likely to become completely unusable again. I called tech support about the issue and was told that repairs would now cost 250 dollars, which is, frankly, unacceptable. I really like this laptop, but this issue with the hinge has been a constant headache. I, like another who I saw post about this issue, would love to see HP stand behind their product and have this mistake in production taken care of.

Hi! So, I am trying to replace my Envy 17's 1TB magnetic hard drive with a 500GB Samsung 850 Evo Sata form factor SSD. I followed the Maintenance and Replacement guide at http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04091762 , but when it came time to actually extract the hard drive from my computer, I could not figure out how to do it. I took a few pictures of what it looks like inside my computer, and they are in here: https://goo.gl/photos/RLmPNcYfzq5Lf5Ah6 . As you can see, there's a blue rubbery case around my hard drive, but pulling on it from either side doesn't seem to budge the hard drive, and I didn't want to apply maximum force in case the bay broke. The manual says to start with unplugging the cable from the hard drive, but I can't seem to unplug it do to the lack of space. Any help would be much appreciated. Sincerely,MajorGeneralRelativity P.S. If you need more info, please let me know

Hello,  This is my first time on this site and I have been having some trouble with my computer.FIrst of all, my computer is the HP Envy 23 Touchsmart PC and its roughly around 3-4 years old. For all this time, it has been working fine without any problems, but one day I was playing a game on my computer and it randomly shut down. At first, I thought I accidentally kicked a cord, so I made sure every cord was in their sockets tightly. Thinking it was a loose cord that caused it to shut down, I tried to turn it on again. Unfortunately, there was no luck.   In furthur investigation on my computer, I noticed my power cord was making a small beeping/chirping noise every 2-3 seconds with its green light flashing on and off in sync with the green light. What I found interesting was when I unplugged the power cord from the computer, the green light would actually stay solid without it blinking or making any noise. When i replug it back in, it continues to blink and make the small beeping noise again. As a computer amateur, I am afraid to open my computer up and try to fix the problem myself. And I was also hoping for some solutions here on this site before bringing it into a store to get it fixed.  I also updated my computer to Windows 10 if any of that matters. Thank you for your time!

Does anyone know what this part is?  I'd really like to know its part number because I'm trying to order a replacement.  It has the power button on one side, and on the internal side it has screw-ins for the fan and one of the speakers.  It is a black plastic part that runs along the side that the fan blows out and flattens out on both sides.  It was glued to the metal case.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Hello,

I've had this problem off an on for probably about a year now. Randomly my clickpad (I think that's what it's called...the mouse on my laptop) stops working. Either the cursor will freeze and disappear when I touch the screen or it just doesn't appear when I open my laptop. I found a fix once that said to just go into the Device Manager and either update or rollback the driver and that worked the first time....but doesn't seem to be the answer as it continues to happen. Luckily I have the touchscreen or I'd be really annoyed but its tough to do work with just the touchscreen. Can anyone help me keep the cursor/clickpad working?

When I update/roll back the driver I go to:

I purchased an HP Envy Touchsmart 23". It was used little over the three years. Last week, when starting up it started to display the message reading "Critical error/your start menu isn't working. We'll try to fix it next time you sign in". After several attempts of power off and restart, hoping the fix would happen, my HP simply stopped responding to the power on switch. The power on switch would light up indicating that the power was on, but the screen would not light up or indicate activity. Best Buy, where I purchased the computer, could not assess the problem locally - they could only arrange to send it to somewhere in BC, for an assessment that would take 2 to 6 weeks. Can anyone help?

Hello,I purchased an HP Envy Laptop my first year of College, and it has served me well to a point. But recently, I noticed that there was some separation happening in the body of the laptop, just next to the right hinge area. The "metal" and plastic pieces of the casing were pulling apart from each other. This began to cause problems with my disk drive as well, I believe. It became more concerning when it began happening on the right side as well, and likely caused problems with the fan.At this point, the left side of the casing, right by the vent snaps out and back into place whenever I open my laptop. As this is a problem that could be getting worse virtually every time I use the computer, it makes it stressful to enjoy my HP device. If this continues, more problems will undoubtedly arise.I need a solution to this, lest my HP experience be ruined.Thank you for your time. I do appreciate and respect it.

I'm having the problem with my left hinge.  The hinge started to crack out of nowhere and the lid screen did not close properly.  I've been trying to find a fix for this for months and the problem is I have no idea how to repair it without spending a LOT of money.  The monitor still works but in the beginning when the hinge started cracking I stopped closing the lid all together.  It seems as if hp hp should address this issue because it seems to be quite common as I came across this when I googled this problem. Hi All,I just came across this topic. My HP Envy M6, purchased in November 2014, also has a broken hinge (left one).It has broken in normal use a couple of months after my warranty expired. I was quoted roughly $250 for the repair which seems to be too high. Also I read it as a design issue with most of the HP Envy customers reporting the same.  I am not sure as to how should this be fixed. Can HP please take notice of this and help me at a very minimum cost or no cost at all (since this seems like a design issue and too many customers reported the same issue). Thanks in advance.

I am always very careful with my laptop as I rely on it for word processing.

my hp envy has broken hinge on left,  I need it fixed fast.  What can you do?

#HPExpertDayHinge is a physical part and the damage depends on usage. You will have to call HP and setup a service or take the unit to a authorized service center.

I  just came across this topic. My HP Envy m6-1184ca, purchased November 7, 2012, also has a broken hinge. It broke in normal use a couple of months after the warranty expired. I was quoted $300 for the repair, roughly 50% of the purchase price. With no relief forthcoming I declined the repair and have been using it by propping the screen against several books. I look to HP to repair to computer at minimum or no cost to me.

I've read in the forum that someone got their laptop repaired at NO COST?? Even after lapse of warranty? Wow, what did you do to convince HP to do this? I have sent several requests and complaints and a HP rep phoned to ask about it then told me to pay $300.00 for the repair. I do believe a substandard quality back cover which undoubtedly costs very cheaply to make is a good trade of for keeping customers. But it seems HP is more concerned about making money once and not considering about after sales and follow up sales. They certainly lost me and I was considering buying the Spectre but not anymore. BTW I checked an online supplier for the back cover and it sells for $35.00 from China but I prefer to do the repairs myself.

I bought my HP Envy 360 at the beginning of fall semester this year (August 2016) and I opened it up this morning (October 30, 2016)  only to find the hinge popped out of place, the screen splitting from the back, and a screw breaking loose from the inside. I can't close my laptop now and I have no idea what to do to fix this, and a quick search found that this was a common problem in Envy models. My laptop is still under warranty, but how do I get this fixed? I have a lot of papers and school work due and a working laptop is a necessity right now. Please help!

My HP Envy's hinge is detaching as the casing is cracking open. I have never dropped it or damaged it any manner. Everything else works perfectly. I have barely had my computer over a year now which is not a long time and this seems to be a very popular problem. I will have to pay to get this fixed due to a manufacturing problem and being a college student that is definitely not in my budget especially with the precaution I take with this laptop. I love this product and so far I have had a great HP experience. I would hope HP is going to back their product!

Purchased 20 of these in 2014 for our library. Hinge is broken on one. I see that many owners have had this issue. Is HP offering any support for this problem?

I know it's a shot in the dark, but I'm hoping someone can offer me some help. I've had my HP Envy for about 2 years and I've always been very careful with it, but last year one the hinges started to pop out. I was still under warranty and was able to have it fixed for free and everything was great. Now, just over a year later, the same hinge has broken again. I don't have the money to fix it and it's at the point where I can't open the laptop because the hinge caused the bottom of the computer to separate. This seems to be a really common problem with the HP Envy and it seems like HP should have some way to fix this (for less than the $350 I was quoted at my local store). Anybody?

My laptop has a broken hinge, otherwise it works great. It is out of warranty. I had contacted HP earlier in the year and they were gracious to offer to fix it free  of cost. However, I was unable to ship the machine right away due to personal reasons, and now the free repair offer has been retracted. Would appreciate any help. Best,Ravi

Never used a forum in the past, and I'm not sure I'm in the right place now.  But I have an HP Envy (don't know off hand the screen size), but I've been reading about all the hinge breakage issues, as my LH hinge pushes the bottom LH plastic cover under the hinge down.  I'm concerned that the hinge on this laptop is about to go out. I bought this laptop December of 2014, warranty ran out December of 2015.  I'm just about to get to the two year old mark.  I've had two HP desktops, and this is the second HP laptop.  I've been glad to stick with HP, but now I need HP's help.  as a lot of other folks have mentioned, the laptops are too expensive to have something like this happen, and it's unreasonable to spend half the cost of the laptop for repairs. I'd like someone from HP to contact me to discuss this.

I just had a double break on my HP Envy Laptop after very light use.  I bought two laptops from HP at the time of this purchase and now both have broken.  Not very pleased with HP quality at this time.  Might need to think about a switch.  Frustrating buying a product that does not last!

Hi,  I've had issues with creaking noises from the the left hinge on my HP ENVY 17 Notebook PC machine and having opened the screen gently as I always do today, the hinge seems to be broken and plastic screw casing has fallen out.  I've checked the forums and this has been a defect issue for a lot of the machines and I'm having the exact same problem with overheating too. (I thought this was a genuine issue with most HP's as per the customer rep who sold me the laptop).  Sometimes the keyboard becomes way too hot in the top left corner to type. Please can someone inform me what I need to do. The laptop is around 18 months old. I've enclosed an image of the problem.
