Hello, I am in need of a bit of help. I have a old Gateway 7510GX notebook that wont charge, and will only run if plugged in to the wall. I am 99% sure that the charging circuit has gone bad, because the charge indicator icon stays at 66 percent for ever.

Do you think I should open up the laptop and check the board for burnt components, or what?
Also, External battery chargers for laptops go for big $$$. So would it be possible to remove the cells and hook them to a external charger. (I have a slow charger made for RC Li-Ion batteries that I think would be perfect).

Thanks,
Richard

I attempted to contact HP is regard to the issue that I am experiencing, but cannot as my warranty expired on 6/22/16.  I'm hoping someone e here can provide insight.  When I turned my Stream on this afternoon, it wouldn't boot.  Odd, since it was fully charged last night, so I went ahead and plugged it in.  Upon doing so, I encountered a black screen stating my internal battery was nearly at capacity.  What precisely does that mean?  I am able to use the notebook as long as I keep it plugged in.  Also, while plugged in I receive a message stating that it's connected to a power source and the battery is not charging.  The moment I unplug it, it shuts down. I'm more than upset in regard to this new and unwanted development.  The notebook is only 15 months old.  Is there any way to salvage it or am I looking at buying a new one?  I've always used HP desktops, laptops, and notebooks; now I will never purchase one again. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

My HP pavilion does not take charging after 80% and sometimes the charging light starts blinking. It shows plugged in , not charging.

A:My HP pavilion 15 notebook does not charge after 81%

Have you tried a battery diagnostic either in the UEFI diagnostics (F2 as you power on) or in the HP Support Assistant running from Windows? Stopping at 81% seems like it may be a dead power cell in the battery. Can we have the full model number of the laptop and an idea how old the battery is? Original?

My notebook is not charging. I don't know if it's the charger that's not working or could it be the charging port on the notebook itself. I have been charging it for the past few days and it's doing pretty well until I plugged it on a socket and didn't charge anymore. Tried checking the charger, it smelled a little burnt on the blue end with the pin and also on the charging port. When I plugged it, there was no popping sound whatsoever that could lead to me assuming it had a short circuit. Checked the socket, it was compatible with the charger. What am I to do?

I have purchased HP 15-AF114AU Notebook about 2 months ago. For the past one week, the battery doesn't charge beyond 90%. Once the bettery reaches 90%, the indicator shows "plugged in, not charging".Initially, it used to charge upto 95%, then it dropped to 94% and now 90% in a span of just one week. I have tried recalibrating the battery by draining it completely and charging it again, run tests using HP Support Assistant and the component test from BIOS, all show the battery to be OK. But still the battery doesn't charge beyond 90%, no matter what I do. Please help.

I got this Toshiba Satellite 32PFL3312/10 - But now there is some problems

The battery indicator says that the the charger is plugged in, and IS charging. but it doesnt charge the battery.. no charge is taking place :-/ Its says there is "0" battery left. I have triede everything.. i toke the battery out, made sure there wasnt any dust etc.. i have tried holdning the power key down in 30 sec and a lot more. everytime i unplug the charger the system instantly swiched off.. I have tried to change the power plan from balanced to saver.

Then i tried to delete the Microsoft ACPI Compliant control method battery from the decive manager, and made it search for it again. This step made the battery start to charge for about 10-15 sec, and then it stopped again.

Now im kind of frustrated... So i thought that maybe it was an windows update problem, so i tried to update - but i got several updates "hanging" but now it wont update.. ! Comes with update errors. tried microsoft fix it, it didnt help.

Then i thought, okay... then i will try to restore to the factory condition, But nothing happens, i have tried all the guides from the Toshiba forums, pressing "0" - I did nothing... Then i tried pressing "F8" it didnt nothing... Then i tried the "F12" still nothing.

Im going nuts now... Hope someone in here can help me....

Hi EightForum,

I really hope you can answer this simply request.

Nowadays is pretty common to have a new Ultrabook, laptop or notebook for general purposes. A very important feature is to have a healthy battery. We all know that Lithium-batts do a terrific job and are more resistant than never, but after many years of experience, I've learnt that having a software like "Eco charge, Battery care, Smart charge...etc " is a clever and vital feature already present in major brands BUT HP, believe or not. I've just received a new Ultrabook Spectra x360 with windows 8.1, and so far I cannot find any special battery function for this request, even worst nobody can answer in their forum either; I really can't understand this flaw in HP. So, I'd like to know is there any reliable battery software that can allow me to keep the battery charge to 80% and no more, even connected to AC power.

I've seen several that keep info about battery and how to optimize but none with the simple function that I need.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

A:How can I set maximum level of battery charge for notebook

I honestly don't think it is possible to change what is built into the hardware and ACPI that ships with the computer. Would take a program that can access and change the settings in ACPI and this most likely would have to come from the manufacturer.

My company bought these notebooks for some of our products and we install Ubuntu 12.04LTS on them.  When we shut them down and try to charge them it doesn't work.   The light beside charging port is on (like it is charging), but cannot turn on computer after hours of "charging" because the batteries are drained.  It looks like it charges fine when the computers are turned on and charging, but not when we try to charge them without turning them on. We are wondering if this is some known issue and what would be correct procedure for charging these netbooks?

A:HP 210 G1 notebook with UBUNTU doesn't charge battery

Hey, Bit of a late answer, but I'll submit it in case anyone else has a similar issue. There is an issue with one of the BIOS version on the 210 G1, BIOS version F.03. If this is not updated to the most current version you'll find your batteries will drain quite quickly and will not charge properly. Also as your running Ubuntu, you may need to use the UEFI tool from HP to update the BIOS, here it's called the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics 3 in 1 USB Key: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/pc-diags.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/pps/pl_... Best of luck.

Hello to all, I'm new to this forum.
Start of with a topic what was published many times before, only not the same as in my situation. The crazy thing is, at every startup from Windows the battery icon runs the charge bar 5 times, and than it stops. At pointer it says: 0% available ( on main supply, battery is being charged) However, this does never change. Nomatter how long it charges.
BatteryBar does the same thing:
Procent 0,0 %
Capacity 0mWh of 43.568 mWh
Battery unknown (charging)
Charge 0 mW
Full time 1:17
Main supply connected
battery waist 18,2% of 53.280 mWh

Does anybody have the patience to shine a light on this drained topic. I feel, mines is different.
Would be highly apreciated.
Thanks in advance

Hi, Recently the main fan on my notebook failed. Thus, I found a new cooling assembly part on ebay, ordered it, and installed it. The installation process required the complete disassembly of the notebook. I followed a video guide for this. I am well aware that disassembly voids any kind of warranty, this machine was already well out of warranty. After re-assembling the notebook, it doesn't boot or show any signs of life. I have tried all combinations of powering on with and without battery, with and without AC adapter, and with and without the hard drive. The computer's charging light doesn't light up when the adapter is plugged in, but right after I insert the plug to the computer, I hear a very faint clicking once or twice where it plugs in. I am curious if possibly during the disassembly/reassembly process I broke a power component to the computer or possibly shorted out something on the motherboard. I didn't use an antistatic wristband during the process however in hindsight I definitely should have. I'm curious as to which part could possibly need replacing according to the symptoms described above. I double checked that all plugs were properly inserted as well. Hopefully someone can point me towards whether the problem is with the DC-in power component within the computer or perhaps the entire motherboard. If it's just the little DC component, could that be easily replaced? Thanks,Matt

So I was using my laptop last night while it was plugged in. Although it said it was charging, the battery level kept going down to the point it was on 0%. But while there, the laptop still ran for at least 15 minutes, then it died. I tried another outlet but it wouldn't charge and now I can't get on my computer. I tried the battery draining method hoping it would work but it didn't. Is my computer done for or is it able to be saved?

I have an A30p 2653-64u running winXP with 1 meg memory, that I installed after purchase.  I moved my Hard drive from my other A30p to it (same model). Upon arrival from the seller, it started up once, before I changed the RAM, HD and Battery.  Now it does not start up from the battery that has a good charge or AC brick (adapter).  It does not even show that it is charging from the AC brick.  Is there a fuse somewhere that I do not know about that could have blown to render this unit completely dead?  No LEDs come on when plugged in to the AC brick.  THe Brick does work, since it will charge the battery I installed in my other A30p.  I do note that it appears that the round plug that the AC brick plugs into seems to wobble and a small piece of plastic from the case is missing.  I assume that a previous owner banged the charging cord sideways to cause the damage... However, it started up the one time when I first got it. (PS-George, this is where I got the other screen for my other problem LOL -- I hope to get one good one out of the two!! )

A:A30p does not start up or charge

Let's try this: unplug the adapter and battery, remove the hard and media drives. Press the "power" button ten times in a row holding it down for ten seconds each time and thirty seconds the last time around.Plug the AC adapter (but nothing else) in and try to power on. If this fail, try powering it from a charged battery.Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi,
I have a Dell XPS 13 (9350-4891) with BIOS version 1.2.3 installed.
Here's what I'd like to achieve: The battery should only start charging at 60% charge or lower. In case that it's charging, the maximum charge should be 90%. So for example if the current charge is 74% and I plug the AC in, the battery should NOT start charging (because it's over 60%).
Here's what I already tried:
1) BIOS menu: Settings -> Power Management -> Primary Battery Charge Configuration. Then I selected "Custom" and entered the values from above. Result: No matter what the current charge is, the battery starts charging anyways when I plug the AC in. So for example if the current charge is 74% and I plug the AC in, the battery starts charging.
2) Dell Command Power Manager: I installed the software and set the settings like in the BIOS menu in 1). Same result as in 1). Charging starts, whatever the current charging level is.
3) Dell Command Power Manager: I also tried to use this software. Same result as in 1) and 2).

Thanks a lot for any helpful reply!

When I first log on after boot up and immediately open the windows Task Manager I always find a peak commit charge of around 427450 (see attachment) plus or minus 50.

Because my daily applications never use this much memory this peak charge does not increase during the day. But next morning at start up there it is again, very consistent.

Microsoft Bootvis shows only explorer.exe and Sygate Personal firewall running at start up.

HiJackThis shows nothing of concern (see attachment)

dxdiag shows no problems.

How can I determine what is using so much memory at start up?

XP Home SP2, ASUS A8V Deluxe, AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 1 GB (dual 512) Kingston, everything latest updates and versions.

Hello fellow techies,
I have a situation with my Compaq Evo N600c battery or something in that directions, so I need possible solutions. My laptop needs to be plugged in at all times, which makes it frustrating because its a portable laptop. If it becomes unplugged the laptop will turn off within 10 seconds flat. I fear that this will, if it hasnt already done so, mess up my electric circuits among other components. Can any of you suggest or recommend options I can use to diagnose the situation. I would like to find out what the problem is, whether I should buy a new battery or some component or prong that I need to replace? Thanks for the feed back!

Linda

A:Battery will not charge or hold charge?!?!

Yup, sounds like a battery problem.

First, make sure the battery has a charge. Most laptop batteries have a button on them somewhere you can push that will give you the power level. Alternativly, there should be a utility in windows or the BIOS that will allow you to check the power level.

If the battery has no charge and isn't charging, then replace it with a known good one and see if it will charge up when the laptop is plugged in.

If the good battery won't charge up, then there is a problem with your motherboard.

If the battery has charge but won't power the system, then there is a problem with your motherboard too.

If this is the case, then the best you can do is contact the laptop manufacturer and get them to replace the motherboard.

Hello.

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Notebook Esprimo Mobile V5515.
Operating System is Windows XP SP3.

In the morning or when I first turn it on the notebook won't start. It goes to BIOS, or boot options, I try to boot Windows it just freezes. I have to manually turn it down and try again.
Yesterday after 8 tries the Notebook started. I did a virus check, cleaned the system. I checked the operating system and I saw some errors there and I believed I have some more viruses, so I left it for today.

I downloaded the latest Kasperky Rescue Disk and wanted to scan the computer with it.
This morning I start it up, it's the same as yesterday. I tried booting to the Kasperky Rescue CD and the same happens, the Computer freezes while loading the system.

So it's not Windows, I guess it's some hardware problem?

Did anyone else encounter this?

Thanks

A:Notebook does not start

Hi, The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  This is also consistent with the boot issue you describe. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know. Regards, DP-K

So this happened today. My keyboard all of a sudden didn't work (never had this before) so I restarted the computer. During the restart my fans went on 100% and the screen showed the hp sign after 2 minutes. Thought this was taking way too long so I held down the power button for 10 secs and the computer turned off.Now the power button is lit up but the computer is not turned on. Pressing the button does nothing, even holding it down 1 minute. Effectively, it has turned into a brick. What on Earth could cause this? The notebook is not hot at all, and the battery was at 50% which usually is 2+ hours.Anyone have any idea what I should do?

Hi how far did it fall also you may have sorted out curcete board and probably cracked your mother board when you dropped it.
you need to take it into a computer repair shop and ask them to do a free estimate.
It might be cheaper to get a good second hand one might cost you less, than the repair.

Hi DavidTango,

Kindly let us know what happens when you try to turn on the laptop. Do you hear any beep codes or any lights on the system.

Also have you checked with the battery and only on AC adapter as well. Drain the static power in the system:

Power off the system.
Disconnect all peripherals attached to the system including the battery as well.
Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds.
Reconnect the only the AC adapter to the system.
Power on the system and check its functionality.

Kindly update your system specs here by following this.Keep us posted with the results so we can advise you further.

Hey, A good thing to try first is a hard reset of the computer.  The steps are different depending on if your battery is removable or not.  See http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01684768 for steps and videos that cover this easy first step. If you are still having boot problems walk through the steps in the online troubleshooting documents here: Windows 10  - http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04718479Windows 8 - http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03515402Windows 7 - http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01443371 -wes

New laptop one month old.  Worked fine for three weeks and all of a sudden had problems where sometimes it would not power up.  Battery shows it is charged.  Issue can happen both plugged and unplugged.  Took laptop back to Best Buy and they could not find an issue.  Have done all the HP diagnostics myself and no errors were found.  Have performed the hard reset and it seems to help temporarily, but I should not have to perform a hard reset every few days just to start it up.  I am worried that at some point it may not start at all.  Once it is running it works fine.  Any suggestions before I get to the point where I send it to HP for warranty service?

This is concerning a Compaq 2500 notebook.

The laptop was working fine 1 day ago. After I was done using it (still with ~50% battery remaining), I plugged it in and turned it off. Now, it won't start up. Even though it's plugged in, there is no amber power light (as there should be).

I have verified that the AC power connection is good.

What should I do to start it up? What should I check?

What happened before it stopped booting? Was Windows flaky? Were there errors at all?
Did someone change any settings in the notebook BIOS/CMOS?

I have an Envy x360.  It worked one day and the next day it will not turn on.  I have tried doing the reset and it does not work.  The light where the power cord is plugged in is on.  The power light will come on sometimes when I press it.  Sometimes the caps lock will blink one time and other times it does not blink.  Sometimes I can hear a click inside when I press the power button.  I think I am out of the warranty coverage.  It has an enclosed battery but since I am not covered by warranty would it help to try something with it?  I need to get it working so I can recover pictures and also to finish my portfolio for my masters degree.  Thanks.

Hello, i'm very new here but i was hoping i could get help with my laptop? I'm not good with computers so i'll give as much information from my little knowledge as i possibly can. My PC would usually take about 6 seconds or so on the starting windows logo before completely loading. But since yesterday its been taking almost 5minutes for it to start. I havent downloaded or installed any new apps or software so i'm not sure whats causing this. I'd like to point out that i tried googling solutions for it first and came across a thread on this site that said you can fix this by running windows start up repair through the advanced boot option. But when i tried doing that by pressing F8 before the pc restarted itself it froze and started making beeping noises then went straight to the windows logo and booted itself. Is there any way for me to fix this so that it can start booting the way it used to?

Hi guys,

Acer Aspire 3410, initial problem with black screen of death (completely blank). Reflashed/updated BIOS to 1.28, which corrected error but revealed non-functional backlight (very dim image).

I dismantled the monitor to check all connections (fine) then connected a voltmeter across the earth and +ve on the inverter board to check if it was delivering power. Computer immediately shutdown () and now won't start.

I've tried resetting the CMOS by removing the battery + ac power, holding the "on" button for 30s then refitting battery + ac power with no success. I've also removed the circular battery located next to the RAM accessible via the RAM access panel on the underside. Still nothing.

Any suggestions?

Please bear with me and excuse my lack of computers, I'm a total noob. I have no clue whether this is the right place to post this, and don't know if this problem has to do with hardware, Windows XP, power supply or a virus.

For some time my laptop keeps crashing. When doing difficult stuff (like google maps, videos or lots of stuff during the same time), it shuts down. Then it shows a blue screen.
(The screen looks a bit like this: http://adnansabanovic.files.wordpres...-of-death1.jpg. It says "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL but I don't think it shows the exact same numbers under technical information as in that link)
Then when I start it again, it doesn't go any further than the black start up screen.
(The black screen says "Windows XP" and looks like this: http://www.simplyguides.net/images/g..._fs_ntfs/6.jpg)
Then I pull the adapter from the power plug, wait till it cools down and start it again. Then it works again.

But since yesterday, it keeps failing to start up. After showing a familiair grey screen, it shows a black screen asking to start up using normal Windows XP, last known configurations or safe mode. I tried normal Windows XP and last known configurations but they both fail. When I press either of them, it shows the black start up screen (http://adnansabanovic.files.wordpres...-of-death1.jpg) and stops. Then it automatically starts up again. This keeps repeating itself.

For the past year my notebook has been a HP 17" pv9623cl dual hard core 2GB RAM that operated with Windows Vista Home Premium. The problems encountered were too many, beginning with blue screen crashes that numbered 237 over the year the notebook kind of worked. In September of last year while using the notebook on the internet it suddenly shut down. I was never able to restart the notebook. It was sent to HP where a technician diagnosed the notebook's problems as water damage related, citing the need to replace motherboard, as well replace keyboard and right speaker. HP asked more for this than the notebook cost; the notebook sat at the bottom of a closet. Frustrated not being able to use this notebook, I searched on line for some clue that might help. Found the suggestion to removed RAM, battery. and then replace same before attempting to start. It worked! Eureka. Ironically, the keyboard HP said needed to be replaced worked perfectly. However, after one month of operating normally, which is to say that in this month it crashed to blue screen nineteen times, the notebook shut down once again and adamantly refuses to restart.
Contacted HP, which I must say is a frustrating experience, since their first inclination is to be self-protective or defensive, telling me the notebook is no longer under warranty and I will need to pay for any repairs. They also cited the water damage assertion. However, my only reason for contacting them was to inquire if they had come acros... Read more

A:notebook start-up issue

Hi, The 24 character error code does confirm a failure of the short Disk Self Test failure ( DST ) and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  This is also consistent with the boot issue you describe. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know - include the full Model No. and Product No. of your g6 series notebook - see Here for a further explanation. Regards, DP-K

Hi, I have not been able to find a support contact number, so I will try here... I have a 6 month old 15-ac151dx notebook. It has become completely non-responsive. No apparent cause -it was shutdown normally, but would not start a few days later. It is powered off and does not show any signs of life when the power button is pressed, held, battery disconnected, plugged in or any combination of things that I tried. (including the hard reset described somewhere on this site) How do I get HP support to provide warranty service? Is it a repairable item? Can I remove the hard drive before service to get at my files or will opening it to get to the hard drive void the warranty? Thanks,Tom

Hello!I tried to restore the system to original settings wiping all files and programs. Windows managed to get 38% done on this, when the pc shut down. I started it again and the restoration started over. This repeated 2 times after which i got an option screen to choose if i want to continue to windows 10, restore using windows installation CD, USB device or internet connection or to restore factory settings. I chose to restore to factory settings and after a minute, pc shut down again. Now when i try to start up the laptop, it gets stuck on HP- logo and then goes black and back to logo repeating this until i shut down the pc. I tried force reseting by removing all devices, battery and A/C cord and holding down power button for 30 seconds and starting again with A/C cord only.I haven't managed to get into BIOS settings by holding F10 or F12 after starting up.The pc had windows 8 when i bought it but i updated to windows 10 later on.Please help, i just wanted to do my system restore to make the pc run well again.Thank you in advance !

Hi, As long as the previous installation of Windows 10 had activated Ok after the upgrade from 8.1, you can just perform a clean installation as detailed in the guide on the following link.  Note: At the activation screen, select 'I don't have a Product key' - Windows will activate automatically once the installation has completed. http://www.howtogeek.com/224342/how-to-clean-install-windows-10/ Regards, DP-K

Hello,

I find few threads dealing with this issue, but none of them helped me.

I have HP probook 450 G2 with Windows 8.1. When my notebook starts up I can't access UEFI. It used to show ?Press the ESC key for Startup Menu?, but it doesn't anymore. I try just spam other usually used keys, but nothing seems to do anything. However I can get into UEFI setup after Windows are up via shift+restart menu. But this option isn't suitable in every situation.

-fast sratup is off
-hibernation too

I have read that restarting BIOS on my motherboard could help, but I have never done such thing before, so I want try find another solution before I attempt this option.

Thanks for any advice,
DS.

EDIT: I am sorry, I find out, that my notebook boot so fast, that even disabled fast start up doesn't help very well. I just have to spam ESC from very moment I press power button.

Any help on how to fix this?

A:Start up freeze on my Qosmio notebook

It is not easy to say why this happen. We don't know if there is maybe some serious software conflict.
If your data are backed-up I recommend you to install operating system again and use original recovery image. After doing this you will have clean preinstalled OS and notebook with ?factory settings? so I believe this will solve your problem.

If there is no problem with hardware your notebook should work properly.

When it arrived, the hard drive was dead. Replaced the hard drive, re-loaded the operating system and it seemed fine. Within a day, the blue "on" light would come on but it would not start up. Just a black screen. Turning it off by holding down the button, and turning it back on again, would work sometimes. Once it had started once, it was easy to start up again. Leave it for an hour or so and the same problem starting it up. Sometimes two turn on attempts, sometimes many more. It eventually starts up, but it is annoying to have to go through that process, sometimes, many times. Anyone have any answers? You can e-mail me at [email protected] Thanks. JT

Hi @invile, Thank you for your query.  I grasp that on startup it stops twice with a black screen and the third time it boots into Windows. Please provide your exact model of Pavilion HGP DV7, as there are many in the series.  How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?. Would you try turning off the fast startup option as this has caused delays for other users?  How to Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10. Hi,

I have a Clevo notebook which to be fair is getting on a bit but was working fine until this morning. When I switch it on, the 1st black screen comes up with the copyright info and system info - it says at the bottom Press F2 to enter set up, but won't go any further than that.

If I press F2 it gors tyo "entering set up"....and that's it.

Any ideas??

A:Notebook won't start up past the 1st info screen

G'day,

I'm setting up a brand new ASUS A54C Notebook for a friend, and am having some trouble : each time I choose to Shutdown the notebook, either when logged in using Start > Shutdown, or from the login screen, the notebook does the following:

- logs off user as normal
- shuts down notebook as normal
- after about 3 secs, automatically reboots the notebook to the login screen

The system specifications are as follows:

- Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium x64 OEM
- Intel Pentium CPU B960 @2.2GHz
- 4GB RAM
- Single 300GB HDD (1 x 25GB recovery partition; 1 x 125GB OS partition; 1 x 150GB empty data partition)

Thinking we may have a bum OEM installation causing the problematic shut down, I did a sfc /scannow which returned corruptions that cannot be fixed. I burn't the recovery disks, then did a fresh install from those recovery disks, but I still have sfc/ scannow reporting integrity violations that cannot be fixed (I have run sfc 3 x with a reboot between each).

Can someone suggest anything I can try to fix this? The goal is simply to have the notebook shutdown as normal, when selecting Start > Shutdown.

Other than this, there is absolutely no problem with the hardware or behaviour of the OS. Perhaps I am better off installing a crap-free Home Premium from an ISO, and then activating with COA sticker on bottom of laptop?

Regards,
Golden

A:Notebook reboots when choosing Start > Shutdown

Hey Golden
One of the more common reasons for this behavior is a device driver causing the system to crash on shutdown.

Is the "Automatically Restart on system failure" option still checked in the system properties > Advanced?

What is the best practice to achieve the quickest resume time for notebook? Notebook should be able to run normal Windows applications. Run time from batteries 3 hours plus standby time 24 hours. Applications Garmin and several other maps. Budget is limited to stay reasonable

1. Windows 7 32, 64 Pro or contrary is Starter version the best?
2. Which suits better standby or hibernation?

Obviously SSD is the must.

What else?

How short start times one can expect?
How short times you have achieved?

A:How to minimize notebook start up time from standby

you could try soluto. it's a handy piece of software that tells you how long processes are taking and slowing down you startup. disable them or pause them for startup in soluto, and you laptop should be faster resuming from standby. I'd also recommend putting it to hibernate. surprisingly fast at resuming and doesn't eat the battery
32 bit version would be more beneficial if you have 2GB of RAM or less, never go for windows 7 starter edition (in my opinion) as it is far too restricting.
