Y510p - Identify if both fans are working

Q: Y510p - Identify if both fans are working

Hello!

I want to know how to identify if the second graphics card is working on my Lenovo Y510P.

Each time a turn on something resource intensive, my left gpu is working like crazy with all the heat coming out, and the one on the right seems like not spinning, or spinning but very slowly, and almost no heat is coming out.

Is it supposed to be like that?

Also, can't find Energy Management option to use 'Dust removal' feature.

I'm using Lenovo Y510P 750 SLI on Windows 10.

Cheers,
N

PS. I also want to mention that in NVIDIA Control Panel "SLI Configuration is set tp Maximize 3D Performance" and PhysX settings to Auto-Select.

A: Y510p - Identify if both fans are working

Correct me if I'm wrong but, I dont think GPU's spin, are you referring to the fan? If so, then one fan is for the CPU while the other is for the GPU, Intel GPU is integrated in the CPU while the dedicated GPU has its own fan.

My Lenovo Y510p isnt working, Im on my phone but ill show a video of whats happenning: https://youtu.be/d1nhfJ3PUZ0So my laptop will only turn on for a few seconds before shutting back off and then trying tobshut back off. I cant go into bios, it still crashes after a few seconds. Also a weird thing is itll be stuck in that restarting loop until i plug my charger in and then it just wont turn on at all? It first happened a few months ago but i took it to the shop and they said i was working just fine. Worked for another month, and then did it again, and then it lasted yet another month now doing thia again. The same thing every time. I had it worling yesterday, somehow it just started spontaneously working, and then after shutting it off today it started to loop again. I dont know whats wrong with it??

So, I just noticed this and it has been going on for quite a while I think, the fan on the right side of my laptop is not working. My laptop is an ideapad y510p. The fan not working causes my gpu to go upwards of 75c and I have no clue how to cool it down or make the fan even work in the first place. Any help would be appreciated

Just realized my dvd drive does not play DVDs since I upgraded to win 10. It doesn't even recognize dvds, showing me only a desktop.ini file instead. It plays CDs just fine and it burns DVDs as storage device, though it **may** only be burning them as a CD, haven't really tested it. I would like to get an updated driver from lenovo, but I can't get past the Q&A session, it either doesn't know my laptop or thinks I'm running win 8.1 or 7. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Mike

Hi I just did a clean Windows 10 install and I cannot get the hdmi (or the vga) output to work. I get no signal. I have the single Nvidia version.  I tried as many drivers I could find for the Intel and Nvidia graphics but no success at all.  Hard disk was replaced so I don't have the recovery partition and I don't have the recovery dvd set either. Would anyone that has hdmi output working on windows 10 please tell me what drivers are using?  Thanks

Hi,  Just before im losing my mind i turn to you guys for help! A back story about the recent events that got me to the problem:My Lenovo Y510P crashed (couldnt boot to windows) a month ago and  needed an HDD replacment according to the tech lab (he is still under warranty). They replaced the HDD and installed  the Windows 8 (i had 10 before the crash) from the hidden parttition, when i got my laptop back, i updated to Windows 10 but it crashed on boot screen (just like it did before the HDD got replaced).I sent it back to the lab, this time they just restored it to Windows 8.I tried to update it to 10 and it got stuck on boot again. My laptop went back and forth 3 times like this until they just sent me the laptop with Windows 10 on it. They deleted my hidden parttition and my SSD (24GB) with the laptop backup data so now i cant restore or format and i dont have any drivers or configurations on the Windows 10.  So heres the problem- It works a lot slower then it used to! it also take 3 times more to boot!i tried to get all the drivers and searched for BIOS configurations and i found that im missing a progrem called ExpressCache.I downloaded it but i don't think it made a diffrence. Is ExpressCache my solution? Maybe i need to configure it?Here is a screenshot with some details of my ExpressCacheHelp me please! i can send it to the lab again but they will just format it...Thanks!  ?

Hello, I bought a Y510P (SLI version) 2,5 years ago (yes, warranty is now expired) and my keyboard stopped working. Two rows of the keyboard didn't respond and after resetting and updating my laptop, contacting lenovo and I had to reset and update another time the problem was still there. Lenovo recommended a repair for my laptop. I declined it because I wanted to see if there were faster/cheaper/better options near my location. Next I searched for a local fast and cheap repair center to repair my laptop because my warranty was over so I had to pay anyway. I found one, send my laptop and a while later they told me it was the keyboard controller chip on the motherboard that was faulty. To repair that they had to replace the whole motherboard. Cost? Around 60% of my original purchase price. Way to much for a student. Went to Lenovo again with this information but of course they couldn't tell me more without a diagnose from their own but I don't want to spend another ?50 on a diagnose. This joke costs me a lot for just the diagnose, let alone the repair.  So my question, does anyone know something about these laptops and do you know if it could be this chip and can it be repaired/replaced instead of a whole motherboard? And, does anybody has experience with the cost of replacing a motherboard with Lenovo? Price in the Lenovo shop for a laptop is just over ?300,- and I don't want to get another offer to repair my laptop voor ?700.  It's sad... Read more

I have been having serious issues with the 750M (non-SLI) on this laptop. It will not work at all. I have noticed this issue on both Windows 8.1 (factory image) and Windows 7 (fresh install). Device manager lists it as saying: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43). Disabling and re-enabling the device makes the screen flicker and nothing else. I have tried various driver version configurations (with a driver sweeper run each time) and NOTHING will get it to work on either OS so I am beginning to be convinced that this laptop is a POS and has had the 750M video card die. Attempting to play games clearly illustrates that the intel GPU is being used instead as there is very low FPS.DXDiag will not show the video card even if I disable the intel GPU.GPU-Z shows the video card, but you cant see anything about frequencies or fillrates, bandwidth, sensors etc.

Still nothing... Gonna send it back soon demanding a new one. In the meantime I must reccommend that people do not purchase the Y510p.

I recently updated my Lenono Ideapad Y510P to Windows 10, and after a couple of weeks, I started having this wierd problem with my sound. For some reasons, I always had 2 sound outputs, 1 actually being my speaker, and the other being a random "fictional" speaker. However the fictional speaker was set as default to play some of programs, for an example Counter Strike, which resulted in me not being able to hear what was going on in CS. I tried to deactive the "fictional" speaker in the playback options, but for some reason I couldn't deactive it .. So of course, I uninstalled my drivers, and tried reinstalling. However, my big problem now is, I can't install the driver again. I tried both downloading the driver from your website, downloading the Realtek Audio Driver specifically for my computer (however it was for Windows 8.1, no newer version), and I tried downloading the driver from Realteks own website for Windows 10. Both did in fact start the installation, but after saying "You need to restart in order for the driver to work (or something like that)", nothing happened. I didn't have the driver, nor the Realtek program and worst of all, my sound still isen't working .. Is this a virus, or am I just missing something really important? I hope someone's able to help me! And i hope I posted this in the right forum, if not, someone please move it to the right one

Hello. I recently had a problem with my HDD and was able to replace with a new one. Unfortunately, I came across a new problem.

For some reason, my Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo fan stopped working. My CPU case is Azza Hurricane 2000 and the rear/back fan stopped spinning as well. There are 8 fans that comes with the Azza Hurricane 2000 case and other 7 fans are working fine. It's just my Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo fan and the rear/back fan.

If it was just the rear/back fan I wouldn't be so worried but I'm a bit worried about my Hyper 212 Evo fan.

Any idea?

A:My CPU fans stopped working

OK, first of all no one [other than you] has any idea what we are attempting to fix. Post ALL of your exact system specs; ie exact mb, exact cpu, etc, etc.

Some high performance mb have 2 cpu fan headers. If you have this option, have you tried the other cpu fan header?

so,new box with power supply, new motherboard, old processor, old HD and old memory.
whats my problem here.

make sure your 4-8 pin cpu power connector is plugged in to the motherboard. you could try taking out all the ram and testing one at a time to make sure you dont have a bad ram stick. reset the bios by pulling the cmos battery out and unplugging it for 60 seconds. worst case scenario, your cpu is fried.

Hi all

I recently bought a new processor, motherboard, memory and graphics card. when i recived them i pluged the motherboard, processor and memory in to my current case and psu with my old PCI E graphics card to make sure they worked. They all fired up first time and worked, i looked at the BIOS to make sure they where all running ok and they where. today i bought a new case and a PCI E power cable as the new graphics card i bought requires one. i swapped every thing over in to the new case (hard drive, floppy, cd/dvd drives and the new graphics card, mother board, memory and processor) i plugged the power in and tried to turn it on but computer did not work it just made a funny noise. i figured it may be the graphics card hogging all the power so i unplugged it. after i had taken the card out and i tried to turn on the computer all the fans in the computer (front and back of case, PSU and CPU) would spin for a second and then go off. i thought the case my be causing it so i took every thing apart and just had the motherboard and memory. however still the same, the fan would spin for a second and then nothing. if i held a screwdriver over the power on pins for a few seconds they computer would power up or so its seems as all the fans are spinning, but the computer does not work still. no sounds or visual output. all i can do now is make the computers fans spin for a second and then go off, get the fans to stay spinning by hold a screw driver over the pins. one thing that i ... Hi Max,
If you are absolutely positive the pinouts are correct and you've tried another WORKING PSU
ram, there are no POST errors etc, try either ( this will **** you off ) installing your old mainboard in your new case (to eliminate the new case) or your new mainboard in your old case (to eliminate the new mainboard)
Good luck

My computer came with a piece of software for monitoring fan speed etc. Whenever I launch it, it says "Warning! Chassis fan 0 rpm" to tell me the chassis fans aren't turning. However, they never seem to turn on! I don't know if it's normal, and I'm just worrying over nothing, or if there's something wrong. I've attached a screen shot to show what the software says.

Scoonesy

A:Chassis fans not working?

this could be a number of things. Are the fans actually turning on. If they are the software is clearly not detecting them. the likelyhood that both fans went out at the same time tells me that its probably something else other than your fans misbehaving.

1.if you need to they will have two wires connecting them to the motherboard. make sure that is firmly seated in the connector on the board.
2. see if you have any yellow exclaimation points in the device manager
3. try hitting that "update" button or reinstalling that particular software so the software can reinitialize.
4. show me what the screen shot of the fan speed tab.

I wouldnt sweat this issue. If you see the fans are spinning and the board temp is reasonable you've got nothing to worry about.

I'm putting my rig together http://www.sevenforums.com/overclocking-case-mods/137435-rig-build.html. Got everything installed and hit the power button. The PSU is running, I get one beep from POST. No case fans are running and the CPU fan looks like it tries to start, but not engaging. Nothing is showing up on my monitors either.

Any ideas? I sure do thank you for your time.

A:CPU/Case Fans not working

Hi Beau,

Disconnect all PSU cables and then check the mounting of your motherboard to ensure that it is not shorting anywhere on its mountings. Ensure that the CPU fan is installed and plugged in correctly. Plug in the PSU cables to your motherboard only and try to start up. Does your CPU fan now spin? If so, power down and add one peripheral at a time to the PSU, starting with case fans. Each time, test by powering up.

Also, while testing, remove your graphics card and use the on-board instead. Basically, we are trying to eliminate faulty components which can affect the stability of the power rails.

Your motherboard might be bad. I would take it to a computer shop and have it tested.

How do I get all my case fans to work at once?

I just built my system with an Intel Desktop board D865GVHZ motherboard.
When I plug in both case fans, only one will come on. I have tried plugging it into each of the available plug ins for fans. My case has an lcd window in front to monitor fans and temp, but shows only the one fan on. I have gotten two high temp alarms now. Each time, it cools down from 57 to 47c after alarm, but I really would like to avoid high temp with fans working. How do i get them both to work??

A:case fans not all working

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Normally, you would plug the cpu fan into the mobo and the case fans would be plugged directly into the psu`s molex connectors.

What connectors do you have on your case fans, three or four pin?

Strange. This probably wont work, but its worth a try, how about just unplugging the fans, running windows, shutting down, sticking them bak in and see what happens? Never know, might do something.

I just put together a new rig. This is my only snag in setting it up. I went for vista 64 so I could utilize my 4x2gb (8) RAM. After installing Vista Home 64-bit, the device manager indicated that it could not detect my RTL8168(C)P/8111(C)P (realtek) integrated wireless adapter on my GA-EP45-UD3P mobo (gigabyte). After reinstalling the drivers from the disc, still no go.

I then fetched the vista 64-bit drivers for the wireless adapter off of the gigabyte website using another comp. After installing those, the device manager indicated that the device is working properly. However, when I try to add a wireless connection, vista notifies me that there is no wireless hardware to be found.

The device manager is either lying to me, or Vista's lying to me. Has anyone had a similar problem or any suggestions?
Thank you ahead of time.

Hello, just recently the fan on my x800 stopped working and the GPU would heat up to a certain point and my computer would shut itself off. So I took the video card out and cleaned the dust out of it and put it back in, it worked for a while but then stopped again. I thought it just mite be the fan that is broken and thought about buying just a new fan.

Well today I went out and bought a Geforce 7600 to replace my x800, I came home and put it in my computer installed the proper drivers and then went to check the GPU temp and noticed it was at 73 degrees, I then looked at the fan on my new 7600 and it was not moving, I wasn't to happy. I now know that it is not a problem with the fans on the cards since both of them are not working, so I have no idea what else could cause the fans to work for a few minutes and then stop all of a sudden. Is there anyone that could please give me some advice on what could cause the fans on my video cards to not work.

And yes, they are plugged in.

Sounds as if something has moved in it's socket, as you moved it from room to room. Most likely the graphic card. I would power off, and lift out the graphic card and refit it. Check that, if no different, remove the RAM and refit it.

Hi everyone,

New to the forums here, so thanks to everyone up front:

My i5-750 that I OC to 3.5 ghz idles at about 37 - 43 C using RealTemp. My Lian Li case has a large fan in front blowing air in, two on top sucking air out, and one in the back also sucking out air.

I have a Noctura fan for the CPU with both fans, one pushing air in and one sucking air out, so I'm thinking my CPU should be quite cool. No matter what, my fan speeds
stay the same. I use the ASUS Fan Expert, and tried SpeedFan (or something like that) but my RPMs for the fans stay the same. I'm thinking I don't have the fans
plugged into the right fan ports on the MOBO. I should be able to increase the speed of the Noctura and the main fan in front, right? When I turn on turbo on FanExpert absolutely
nothing happens. In BIOS, all the fan settings are set to enabled. I'm really at a lose here. Could it be that PSU isn't strong enough?

Any help would be greatly appreciated !!!

BTW: My entire system I built about 6 months ago.

Thank you all

Lian Li case, W7 64-bit, ASUS P7P55D-PRO, i5-750 OC 3.5 ghz, Noctura heatsink, Radeon 5870, Antec 750 PSU, DDR3 1600 mhz.

A:CPU idles high - fans not working right?

When you're overclocked, having a cool CPU is pretty hard to acheive.

About changing fan speeds, you can't exactly change it OVER the spec, so if the RPMs correspond with the fan's spec, thats as fast as you can go. Not sure what would happen if you overvoltage it via some other method though, not that I'd know how to wire your PSU to provide more than 12V.

Might want to re-seat your heatsink, that might help. Make sure to use thermalpaste.

Dear all,

Last week I did a clean install from Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 32 bit to Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit. During the process this forum helped me a lot, and most of my problems are solved now, but... Since I installed Windows 7 I noticed that my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1545, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6400 @ 2.00GHz, 4 Gb RAM, Intel Chipset) is getting very hot on the surface and I don't hear the fans running anymore. While using Ableton Live 8 the laptop shut of twice, I think of overheating.
I had contact with Dell Support today, who said they couldn't help me because I did my own install of Windows 7, but the tech guy told me to do a BIOS update, which I did, without any results so far. I downloaded SpeedFan which tells me my CPU temperature is at rest (only Firefox and Media Player opened) around 60 C. When I want to configure my fans through SpeedFan the program doesn't find any fans to control.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how can I fix it?

All help is greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome

There is a known issue between some laptops and win 7 64bit. Mine was one of them. Mine is also a dell. I found a neat app solely for dells that handles it. My lapbrick was running at least as hot as yours and now its about 125F. See pic for app and link

Hello everyone,  Today I realized my fans stopped working. It has been 4 or 5 months since I bought this laptop there were no problems with it until now. Also, I was playing games 4-5 days ago and nothing happened to the hardware at this time period. I tried to play the same game today and the fps was very low and then I realized there isn't any loud fan noise. I tried to use dustdefender to check whether my fan is working or not but it keep saying "This feature is disabled if the system load is heavy." . It says this even though there aren't anything working on the background. In this time period a windows update is done and also, I deleted some software which is about some sound stuff (not the drivers.) . I deleted and re-installed Quick Access and still nothing. What is the problem?

I recently got this new computer, an Asus Essentio cg5275-AR003(I think that's the number)

Two problems with it, one is it can't find drivers for the "PCI Simple Communications" hardware which is listed as being in "PCI port 0"

despite an update and internet access courtesy of my step-dad's office and a ethernet cable fixing other major issues it couldn't find a driver for that.

secondly, I heavily modified this PC...I added a Titan Fenrir CPU cooler as well as two Sharkoon Silent Eagle SE fans.

The trouble with the fans is they won't run. When I turn on the computer they run, but then suddenly stop altogether!

What could cause the fans to not run? Does it have to do with the PCI communications device somehow? Please, without those fans the computer's temperature hikes quickly and I need to get it fixed before I can enjoy my new system for what I intended(gaming).
Extra note: After doing some research I found that the "PCI communications controller" is supposed to be the modem...which makes no sense to me because I used that connection to update the computer. Downloading the LAN drivers from the ASUS website also does nothing to fix this.

The fans use 4-pin connectors but the motherboard plugs for the case fans only have 3 pins. I know that the 4th pin is for controlling/monitoring the speed...but why won't they run at all?

A:Two problems -Missing drivers and fans not working, help please?

PCI communications controller is usually a telephone modem
for dial up connections.
Either you have a PCI telephone modem card installed or
it is built into the motherboard.
If it's on the motherboard, you can disable it in the bios setup.
That is if you are using cable or DSL.
In that case you don't need it enabled.

It looks like those fans are designed as case fans and the
different cables are to run it at different speeds.
If you want to use them as cpu heatsink fans run at full
speed, you probably need to use the black molex cable
and connect the directly to the power supply.
You probably need to disable the fan warning in the bios
as they won't be connected to the motherboard header.
The smaller 4 pin is for fan speed sensing and control.
You need to have the correct header connector for it ot
wotk right.

Hello there I'm Mike.

Ive had my desktop pc for roughly 3 years.

It has 5 case fans and a PSU fan. The PSU fan is working fine, all the others worked one day then the next they didn't. I have checked the connections to see if they are still in place and everythings as it was. I haven't moved my pc for atleast 6 months or so. Im quite confused to what the problem might be.

I have had the problem before it came and went atleast 6-8months ago. Within a few days of using it with only the PSU fan working I switched it on and once again it was fine with all fans working.

I have a feeling if i continue to ignore this problem and just wait for it to right itself im going to end up with bigger problems.

Any help would be appreciated.

emachine t2862 video not working

MY grandmother has a emachine t2862 and the only thing that comes on is the fans in the pc. The monitor acts like it wants to but then a messege comes on the screen saying monitor is fine check your pc. I thought this might be the video card so I bought one to install. After putting it in and turning the pc back on nothing happened. I tried going in to BIOS by tapping delete but nothing happened. If I can't get into BIOS to disable onboard video whats next step. Help.

A:emachine t2862 fans only thing working

Hello! Welcome to TechSpot

I suggest checking everything inside, then do a bare bones setup.
Having only the cpu, ram and onboard video,(keyboard too) just to see
if you get to bios.
To install a new vid card ,w/o new vid card installed.
Go into bios and disable on board video, reboot and turn off the machine
right away. Install new card and boot normally.
post back to let us know

Hi all,

Computer Specs
Shuttle SK41G
Athlon 2100+
Windows XP
512- 1 gig ram
Old Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce2 (Chaintech MX400)
New Graphics card: Radeo 9700 pro 128mb
Western Digital 80gig harddrive
CDRW/DVDRom and floppy drive

You help is much appreciated with the following.

I have a shuttle SK41G. I recently decided to upgrade the graphics card to a radeon 2700 pro and upgrade to 1gig of ram. Installation went fine and and it worked ok, although graphics card crashed several times. So I decided to put the old features back in the shuttle and build an entirely new computer. Unfortunately my plan to sell my shuttle has hit a snag - or more precisely a blank screen.

This morning I took out the Radeon 2700 and the two sticks of 512 ram and replaced them with the old graphics card (geforce2) and two sticks of 256 ram. Turned on the computer, everything whirred away as normal, but there was no video output.

Then I realised I had put the ram in the wrong way (it was tough, but I managed to do it!) So I changed this around, but still nothing. I then hooked up the screen to the on board video output. Nothing. Then I reset CMOS. Nothing. Then I took out everything and put in one of the new sticks of ram. You guessed it: nothing. None of the combinations of reseting seemed to work.

So what have I done, and how do I fix it? Have I permanately damaged the ram sockets?

Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you!

jhm

I have a Gateway M675 that has an overheating problem. I know this because I took the back off and pointed a desktop fan at it. Before it would BSOD or just flat out shut off. Now w/ the fan it stays on for as long as the fans blowin on it. I noticed the fans (3) all shut down after windows starts up. I though I was going to have to replace all of them but noticed they work during boot up then quit. I didnt see anything in the BIOS for fan control. Any Ideas? I thought fans stay on as long as there is power unless something is stopping them. Could a bad battery be the culprit? This laptop does not run unless plugged in, I know that means I need to replace the battery but I wanted to make sure this laptop wasnt DOA and spent 100 bucks for a battery.

I've had this build for nearly a year now with no issues. However, as of late, my motherboard has been getting overly hot (using Piriform Speccy to measure). My computer case came with 4 fans but it effectively has 6; one in the rear of the case, two at the top of the case, and another in front of the hard drive mounts. It also has a plastic flap with 2 fans attached to it. When closed, it acts as extra cooling for the graphics card.

I need to stress that I've had no cooling issues until recently.

While playing any game my motherboard nearly peaks out at 70 degrees Celsius. From past experience, my fans USED to accelerate in rotations per minute during gameplay. I've observed that they no longer do this. In the mean time, I'm taking the side panel off my rig and blowing a fan into it . This brings temperatures down to 60 degrees Celsius. Other than the motherboard, everything else stays cool.

Is it a fan issue?
Are these bad temperatures to begin with?
How much space do you recommend for ventilation?
How would you recommend a fix in general?

Thanks!

A:Fans might not be working properly? Sudden motherboard cooling issues

What specifically is getting warm?

Is it the CPU? if so there are a couple of quick fixes you may want to look at, such as:
- reapply the thermal paste
- upgrade the stock cooler (this is an assumption on you having stock)
- ensure that in the UEFI, the fan speeds are set to automatic and not fixed speeds.

If it's the GPU generating the heat, make sure that the airflow in your case is push the hot air out the top and back panels, whilst drawing in through the front (and bottom if possible).

You may also want to check that your fan speeds are set to automaticly speed up when the temp gets higher, this can be done again in the UEFI.

You may be able to push the fan speed on the graphics card by using AMD Control center or by downloading and using MSI Afterburner (Be carefull using this, as you will only want to change the fan speeds).

If all else fails, make sure your cables are tidied!
This isn't just a case of making the inside look pretty, tieing up the cables and putting them in the back panel / out of the way will improve airflow in the case and mean less heat is contained within the tower unit.

Also, welcome to Seveforums!

So, to give some background, this is my first build, and it has been assembled and working for 4 months now with no problems. I was able to identify the original motherboard as defective the first time I was building it, and the new one has never given me any problems.

My parts are an i5 2500k, a Gigabyte 768 mobo, a Seasonic 750x PSU, a Gigabyte 6850, and 8GB of GSKILL RAM. And I have an aftermarket heatsink as well. CPU is not overclocked.

Essentially, I was running it overnight to patch a game, and this morning when I came to wake it up the monitor wasn't showing anything. Turned it on and off again, "no signal", etc. I tried turning on my sound and restarting the computer, and I didn't get the bootup sound, so I'm guessing my CPU is not booting at all.

I have run it overnight before with no problems, and as stated, I have an aftermarket heatsink and it's not overclocked. I would be very surprised if it overheated.

Also, normally when I boot up, the motherboard LEDs start up for a second and then turn off. Now they're just staying on- not blinking, just staying on. I don't think it's the PSU either, as it has more than enough wattage, but a failure is always possible I suppose.

I have not taken it apart yet- I'd like to avoid that if possible- but if you have any advice I'm willing to take it. Hopefully, if I can't resolve it, I can at least find out which part is the issue.

Thank you very much for your help... Read more

Yes, as the title suggest, I have a question about fans. Right now I have a computer that can actually heat my small room. First off, I have four sticks of RD RAM that have the heat spreaders on both sides. You can fry and egg on these things. Then I have an Asus fanless 7600GS, the heatsink on this gets fairly hot.

I have two rear 80mm exhaust fans, one spins at about 4300RPM and the other is about 2400RPM (I think its on its way out, going to replace both). When I put my hand back there, its pretty hot, almost like a blow dryer. I want to add an extra fan or two but I can't decide what would be best, I would like to ask your opinions on this.

First I thought of adding a front intake fan, but my case only has that small front vent that almost underneath. I have a spot to mount a front fan, but it wouldn't actually be taking in air, theres no vents in the case there. I was also thinking about adding one of those 5.25" drive bay fans for intake. I found a nice one on NewEgg that has two fans, I thought this could help take in some air. Not sure how well they work, I also want to keep the db level down.

My second thought, and the one I think I'm going to go with, is adding a top fan. First I thought to make it an exhaust fan. I see these a lot but I don't know how good they are, do they interfere with the rear exhaust fans?

Then I thought to make a top intake fan. I wouldn't want to pull more in then is being exhausted though, that doesn't... Read more

A:Overclocking GPU and CPU in y510p

If you use the Intel Xtreme Tuning utility you can adjust the multipliers but that is all. The CPU already runs way to hot (and throttles as a result) so overclocking it will only make it worse. I did the opposite and undervolted mine so not only does it run cooler but it doesn't throttle anymore so it actually runs faster then a stock one.

Hey, I know there are already a few topics with the same subject, however none have the exact same situation as mine as most are US based. I too have a powerful Lenovo Y510P SLI with a Intel Centrino N2230 wifi card. I am buying a new router for my student room and since I want to buy things that can last for a few years, opted for a wifi AC router (probably an Asus one). But, this laptop won't support it... I looked in the technical maintaince manual to find which wifi cards are supported for the Y510P, there is one Wifi AC card for the Y410P, but according to various posts will also work in the Y510P as they share the same BIOS whitelist. I don't want to flash the BIOS with a custom modded one which removes the whitelist. (I flashed a desktop Asus motherboard to run OSX, went great, runs well, but I can't experiment with this laptop, need it for university.). So I Googled and Ebayed the partnumer and this one came up: Ebay Link, which says "Only for Lenovo/IBM laptops such as Y510P" should be fine right? Only thing is it is 40 USD, Dutch customs will charge 21% on top of it so that makes 48 USD, and the Dutch postal office will charge anywhere between 15-20 USD for paperwork for importing goods. So that makes an total of 68 USD... so that almost doubles the cost of the upgrade...  I used the FRU number for this card: WLAN, WiFi AC+BT4.0, Ltn BCM4352+20702 2x2AC+BT4.0 HMC which is 20200381, and put in the search engine in the "part number" ... Hi all,

Last night, my keyboard suddenly decided it didn't want to work. The following keys rarely work (occasionally after hitting them a gazillion times): 0 (wow it worked just now), p (using on screen keyboard, now 0 is not working so I need onscreen to close these parentheses), colon/semicolon key, and slash/question mark key.

I really hoe this is not a hardware issue as this comuter isnt even 2 years old yet, and having a functioning keyboard is kind of essential. Esecially when some of the affected keys are in your assword... Not sure if the 4 affected keys are connected hysically and thats why theyre acting u together, or if this could have something to do with the fact that the issues arose immediately after some Windows udates.

I would immensely areciate any hel ! Thank you!

A:y510p - keyboard problem

Hi Imjustaguy ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Better to isolate hardware issue from software is to make the computer boot on a rescue media and try typing from it . Using an external USB keyboard and onscreen keyboard further isolate probability of a bad keyboard specially if same thing fails in BIOS (like test typing the affected letter in security password  but NOT to save it , for testing only) .

Update us how it goes.

Regards

I bought one of the first Lenovo IdeaPad y510p. Having a dual gpu made for a lot of gaming fun. Yesterday, the room filled up with the smell of an electrical burn. I checked the underside the Lenovo. It had been hotter. I heard workers outside my window and figured that the smell may come from them. A few minutes later very thick smoke came out of the left air vent and made a column in the air. I quickly pulled out the power cord and battery. Luckily, the house is still standing. I understand that electronics eventually fail. Yet, this seems unsafe and dangerous. What if I weren't in the room to act quickly? There should be some way to report this. The support page to send a message has been down with an under maintenance message for days.

Hi,I may be repeating the topic, but recently i had to revert back to Win 8.1, as the Track pad and later on keyboard also stopped working. Further I started to get random BSOD's always  giving new driver errors. So finally switched back to Win 8.1.Does anyone has a workaround for this so that I can upgrade to Win 10, as I think 31 July is the last date  for upgrading to Win 10 from Win 8.1, or stick with Win 8..1.Appreciate any help regarding this.

I have been getting a lot of "pauses" of late. Not hard on "freezes" but more of super long delays, causing me to force shutdown when I get desperate. I'm thinking that the hard drive might be failing, and so looking at getting a new hard drive, and finding someone to replace it. Ether having what can be kept copied onto the new hard drive, or perhaps put onto an external hard drive. I was hoping someone could give me insight/suggestion for this. When I look at the Task Manager, it will show "Firefox (Not Responding)" for example, I can try and end task, but that has no immediate effect. If I try to open up anything else, it too "pauses" and may take a LONG time to open up. Messing with the task manager too much will cause it too, to stop responding for a long time. Eventually, Firefox will close, and things start behaving as normal. So I have a Lenovo Y510P IdeaPad, I upgraded it to Windows 10 last December and wanted to downgrade it back to Windows 8/8.1 due to some issues that many said are due to the fact that the model doesn't really support Windows 10 thus I experience the problems. However, since it has been more than a month from the upgrade, I can't just roll it back to previous OS and am wondering if there is any way I can find out what my original product key for the pre-activated Windows 8 so I can perform a clean reinstall with it.

If windows came pre-installed on your laptop, the key might be on its certificate of authenticity. Alternatively, you can obtain the key using third party softwares like ProduKey. It'll display the currently activated key on your system.

Okay here are the details:Windows 10 HomeIdeapad Y510P, only a few years oldworks perfectly finebattery at 0%, plugged-in not chargingoriginal battery and power cordsI can't remember how to get this message to pop up again, but I remember it saying something along the lines of 'Lenovo does not support batteries they didn't make so we are going to pretend you don't have one in'. I have the same battery and charger that came with the computer. I've tried messing with the settings and taking the battery out and putting it back in. I've been to the BIOs screen and looked around. I've searched through forms and everything. I'm about to just buy a new battery for it and see if that fixes it. But I'd like to know what happened so I can prevent it from happening again. Did the battery just get too old and decide to die on me? It's been very frustrating.

Hey Guys,  I am lost. I got my new GT750m5, removed the DVD, added the new card and nothing. I tried reinstalling the Nvidia drivers and nothing. IT doesn't even show up in the device manager. I even have the new 170w power adapter plugged in and the power management set to performance. Any ideas?  I also tried uninstalling the Intel display driver, then the Nvidia display driver and then I tried just installing the Nvidia driver (both the provided lenovo Nvidia driver and the newest 331.65). I keep getting errors about needing an intel driver installed first. Suggestions?

My battery keeps jumping from 40% to 7% within a matter of minutes. I tried resetting my battery but the battery won't go to 100% charged to be able to reset it (it only charges to 99%). How do I fix my batter if I cannot fully charge the battery and then fully discharge the battery?

Power cycling is the best way I can describe it. Approximately once a day, my y510p will power cycle all of its USB ports simultaneously, this is the two USB 3.0 ports as well as the USB 2.0 port (which makes things even stranger considering they are on separate controllers). I will lose connection to all devices (for me an external hard drive, USB 3.0 dock, and USB 2.0 mouse) and they will all come up again a moment later as just being plugged in. It is not the same time of day each day. My drivers are up to date. This occurred under Windows 8.1 64-bit and Windows 10 64-bit. There is also no correlation to whether there is a lot of data moving through the ports or if they are just idle.

I have a Lenovo Y510p. My warranty expired over a year ago, but my screen recently broke. I've tried to repair it myself, but it still won't display properly. Every time I call Lenovo I get a message to "schedule a callback," and every time I go to schedule a callback the web site tells me I'm out of warranty and won't allow me to schedule a callback. Is there a way I can schedule a repair through Lenovo?

Found a possible fix (workaraound) of the famous screen flicker problem. I've tried all of the proposed fixes found anywhere on the web and nothing worked for more than 5 minutes. I also sent it to be serviced, came back even worse. The screen would go crazy when showing high contrast images with a lot of black. The flicker was most prominent when testing the pixel-walk(inversion) on this website:http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/inversion.phpIf you have the same problem, try applying pressure on the LCD frame in one of the corners. In my case the flicker went away. I put a piece of fabric between the plastic and the metal LCD frame and after some fiddling I managed to find a sweet spot with no flicker. My laptop is y510p with 755M SLI and FullHD screen.Try at your own risk!Cheers

A:y510p screen flicker FIX!

Ok, I have an update. The flickering can be fixed with a bit of DIY. There's a band cable attaching the display circuit to the metal frame holding the LCD. This band is glued with some sort of conductive glue that goes bad over time, messing up the electronics somehow, I guess preventing the capacitors from discharging properly, dunno.Try and make your own conductive band, I made mine using aluminum tape, it works very well. No flicker noticeable for over a week.Once again, try at your own risk.

Hey, I bought Lenovo y510p laptop like 2 weeks ago. It is the SLI version of the y510p. The laptop worked just fine when I was playing with it, ran CSGO and Skyrim on Ultra settings over 60 fps. Couple days ago, my friend broke my charger, and I went to Walmart to buy a new one. I bought the Duracell charger which is 90 watts and it was compatible with my laptop. Then I plugged it in, and tried to play csgo but the fps was like from 5 to 15. I have no idea how this happened. I also took off my battery and just tried to play it without it and just charging the laptop, and when I opened csgo the laptop shut down. I already made virus tests and there was nothing in the viruses. Please help me if you can, I really wouldn't want to send this to the warranty since it's brand new and propably gonna take atleast a month. Thank you already!

My guess is that the Charger may not be compatible with that laptop....90watts yes but has it got the correct DC output.

Also you didn't say how your original charger got broken. like was it attached to the laptop at the time?

What could be happening is..when you plug the new power supply in it is not the correct power your PC expects so it disregards it and runs off the battery at lower everything. As when you take the battery out it will not run at all. Easy place for damage is where the power plug goes into the laptop.

Hello there, I have had my IdeaPad Y510p Laptop - 59369999 for 2 years without any problems, until today.  I started watching a video & everything froze for a good 5 minutes.  I held the power button until my laptop shut down, when I turned it on it said "scanning and repairing drive c". It started up normally, I gave it time, moved the mouse once everything had loaded & it froze again. Then the screen went blank with the cursor working, then the cursor dissappeared. Does anyone know of this is a simple fix? Thank you!

A:Y510P Freezing After Start Up

My guess is that the hard drive is dying.  If it will start, try getting a copy of CrystalDiskInfo (free),  Otherwise, see if you can hook up the drive to another machine to test it and to get as much as you can off of it.

Hi Adil,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

Kindly perform Power Drain and set BIOS default:
Try turning off and removing the battery first. With adapter charger unplug, press Power button for 15seconds to drain power inside.  Plug in adapter charger and press Novo button instead of the power key to turn it on for the Novo Menu  Choose BIOS setting  On Exit tab , load optimal default then Y then place battery back before save changes and exit.

Let us know how you get on.

Hello 8-forums.

I'm posting on behalf of my little brother since he isn't the sharpest when it comes to computers. Today his computer started freezing and crashing out of nowhere at completely random times. I couldn't pinpoint an activity he was doing which might have caused it.

On top of that a pop-up kept coming up on his screen about his screen driver having crashed and has been restored. I happen to have the same laptop and I've had this problem for a week or 2 too, but nothing happens when it shows up on my screen (unlike his, where it crashes the computer). His screen now also has blue matrix-like lines all over his screen as a result of todays crashes.

I asked him to send the Zip-file from the DM log collector tool. He only had a BSoD once and he didn't notice the error code. The rest were freezes (forced to restart) and crashes (no BSoD screen).

Hope you can help find a solution to my brothers problem.
Regards Jens and Walther

Hi folks I'm new to the forums to please excuse me. I'm currently posting from my phone so when my laptop comes on I'll attach the debug file.

Basically I set my laptop to sleep instead of shutting it down and when I went back to resume my work (about 20 hours later) it was running very slow.

I was searching for my 'Calculator' but made a typo so I tried backspacing the letter but nothing happened. Chrome (which I had opened at the time) was unresponsive and so was my taskbar.

I waited a while to see if anything would happen but nothing did so I forced shut down.

I left it off for almost a half hour and when I put it on I got that error 'Unmountable_Boot_Volume' and it needed to restart and so it did but then the error came up again this time it did an automatic repair which lasted a few seconds then it was diagnosing which lasted a few seconds and then I got the following message:

Automatic Repair
Your PC did not start correctly.
Press restart to restart your PC which might sometimes fix the problem. You can also press Advance options to try other options to repair your PC.

I clicked restart and it did.. I got a black screen for a minute or two but I got to log in. But once again everything was moving slow so as the start menu seemed to be working I shut down the laptop. (It's currently off)

Can anyone assist me with this problem?
It would be really good if I can actually find out what's really wrong with my laptop.
Thanks.

Hello everyone,  I bought a y510p about two years ago and for the first year it worked flawlessly then one day it wouldnt start up. What would happen is it would try and boot up and show the Lenovo message then go into the novo boot menu and after 1-2 in that menu it would crash no matter what option was chosen and would keep doing it over and over. It also would only do it if the A/C cord was NOT plugged in. If A/C power was plugged in it wouldnt start at all. I gave up on it for about 9 month and it sat in my closet About 3 days ago i tried it again and it booted up fine no problem, did windows updates, restarted multiple times and no problems until today where it shut down and reverted back to what it did before. Any ideas? I am stumped and believe there might still be life in it.  Thanks!
