Hi all,

I'm looking to build a PC for a friend of mine. He will use it primarily for gaming, but he is on a budget.. would like to play all modern games, but want to keep it under $1000. Last time I built a computer was about five years ago, so I'm definitely out of the loop when it comes to latest hardware... would such thing even be possible?

Any suggestions on configuration? Many thanks!!!

I own a PC with the following specs presently:
Motherboard - Intel D945GCR, Processors - Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.00GHz, 3000 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s),Graphics Card - Nvidia Geforce GT430, RAM - 2GB DDR2, SMPS - Intex 400W
I am planning to upgrade my PC after six long years to be able to play games like Max Payne3, Far Cry3, Crysis3 etc. in high graphics settings without any hitch.I am not looking to upgrade again after this for another 3-4 years. What will be the best configuration for me within a budget of around Rs.30000?

A:Best PC configuration for gaming within Rs.30000/-

You will probably have to start from scratch for the most part. You can probably reuse things like: keyboard, mouse,HDD ,monitor and your optical drive. However, to get to the performance you want. You will need a new MOBO,CPU,GPU and PSU. If you could tell me where you would possibly be buying these parts. I could try and help configure the build for you. Since, I am not familiar with your currency. I have no idea where to look for parts for you.

Where will you be purchasing the parts from? Flipkart? Also, it my be hard to build a PC in that price range when you are buying in Rupees. The costs will be inflated due to imports and such.

This computer is more than four years old now. It's obviously not the best desktop, but can somebody tell me where this computer stacks up? And a few really important for me questions: Does buying a new computer in parts cost me less? What is more vital - the CPU or the Graphics card (for gaming and video editing).
Here we go:
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+
RAM: 4GB DDR2 at 400Mhz
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
Gaming graphics: 2303 MB Total available graphics memory
Anything else you guys wanna see?

A:Is this configuration still good enough?

It is pretty dated to be honest. Your CPU upgrade options are limited due to the socket type and you'd really benefit from a quad core CPU. Upgrading the graphics would cause a bottleneck from the CPU. Ideally you'd want DDR3 RAM too. My advice would be to save for a new full system if you're considering heavy gaming and video editing.

Hi Everyone, I have a Pentium 3 866, 384 MB RAM, Windows 2000 system here, and this morning I turned it on as ususal, it booted normally, as I went to start the internet, my computer rebooted on its own, and lost some ram.. dropped to 256. I shut down the computer, restarted the ram came back, this has happened before. I then proceeded to load windows and accidently skipped the scan disk, and it went all freaky on me, wouldnt load windows, and sounded almost like a static surge went through my computer, so I rebooted again, let the scan disk run, and it booted up, only to find that I have lost my regular desk top, all my quick launch items are gone, my desktop looks like it did when I had Windows 98 running on here. I would like to go and boot back up to it being normal.. except when i go to last known good configuration, it only gives me one option.. and I cant get my computer back to the way it was. ANYONE that can help me would greatly be appreciated! I am sooo freaked out! I do not want to fdisk/format this computer.. as I have my work files on here too. Is there a way to somehow go and boot back to another day?
Thanks in advance,
Necole...(lost and scared! ( )

All that is visible is a list of boot devices that can be selected, anyone know how to load up the last know good config??

Hi, hopefully someone can answer this - it's a bit complex.

At the moment, my XP machine will only start using the "Last known good configuration". If I reboot the machine, during XP startup I get a BSOD. Here is a pic of it (taken using my phone!):

Anyway, once the BSOD appears, I power cycle and on the next boot am presented with the opportunity to use "Last known good configuration". I boot using this and the PC boots up fine. The only issues are that:

- The mouse doesn't work on boot, but once you unplug and replug it into the USB port it works again.
- The display settings are a bit wrong, so I have to reset them.
- The printer I installed recently obviously is no longer installed, so I have to install the drivers again each time I boot in this mode.

Now I assume the normal course of things would be that Windows would save the new configuration and use it on the next boot, but that doesn't seem to be happening here. So every time I reboot I have to go through this procedure of getting the BSOD and then using the "Last known good configuration" option.

Interestingly, when booting up from scratch, if I press F8 and use "Last known good configuration" immediately, I still get the BSOD. It only seems to work if you let the BSOD occur first "naturally" and then reboot again and wait to be presented with the prompt.

There is a chance this could be related to some malware. I've been getting redirects ... Read more

I have keyboards and mouse and a 16inch LCD monitor so i wont be buying those things and i will be playing Crysis,COD 6,Metro 2033 etc games.
(Also I want to have DDR3 RAM in my rig)
Please suggest accordingly.

A:System configuration for mid-budget gaming pc

Hi Indrashis95. Welcome to Techspot.

With a budget of around 30K INR you'll have to make do with an AMD dual or triple core system.

Look into the Phenom II X2 555 BE or if you can find the Phenom II X3 720. Any board with an AMD 770 / 870 chipset should do fine. You might be able to squeeze in the Phenom II X4 925 if you find a cheap enough motherboard.

As you'll be gaming on a 16" monitor I assume that your resolution will not exceed 1280x1024. A Radeon HD 5770 will be more than enough. In fact you could even consider the cheaper HD 4770 / 4850 for your system.

A 2x2GB DDR3 kit will do good. A good quality 450W PSU (with sufficient amps on the 12V rails) should run the system.

Just hunt around for the best possible prices. The vendors here are usually out to fleece you.

Incidentally, I'm also from Kolkata.

Well as stupid as i was, I boot up "last known good configuration" which makes my graphics absoultly crap (ie 4 bits) and I can't seem to change it, then when I reboot and run normally, it's still the same. 640 x 800 4-bit.

Although in safe mode the settings is the same as I was running before. 1280 x1024 32-bit.

If there is any help to recover my working settings to overwrite the crappy "Last known good configuration" on my normal boot, I would appreciate it.

A:Recover From "last Known Good Configuration"

A quick, down and dirty way would be to remove your existing graphics .drivers, then install the latest updated version from the manufacturer's website.

OK, I'll give a brief overview of what I'm working with and then describe my problem. I have a relatively new notebook (bought it about 2 months ago, I wouldn't think the exact specs are necessary but if they are let me know), a DSL connection and I have a Linksys Wireless-G router.

I've attempted to play two games online with a friend (Age of Empires 3 and Diablo 2), both of which resulted in nothing by headaches. In both games we attempted to directly connect to each other via IP. He also has a notebook and is using a wireless router. We've tried it both ways; me trying to connect to him and vice versa, same problem both times.

Now, I don't know a whole lot of anything about networking and routers and the such, but I'll put in what I do know. When I try hosting a Direct IP game, both games listed an IP at the top of the screen, but it wasn't my IP, it was what I think is called the local IP? It's 192.168.1.1; now I know that's the address to the router and if I type that in my browser address bar I can access the router's configuration and all that good stuff. I also noticed that if i go to that address one of the options under the router configuration is "Applications and Gaming". When I go there it lists a bunch of stuff about opening ports and triggering ports and some other stuff that I've never heard of.

I've talked to a few people and they tell me that I would need to open certain ports and... Read more

I installed the patch, restarted, and my computer would not boot. Random services / processes would crash followed by WerFault crashing... I went into safe mode and system a system restore, and I thought all was good.

But now, I have to continually choose to use last known good configuration from the boot options to get into windows. If I don't, it'll proceed to crash. Is there any way to make windows use the LKGC as my current config??

Hey everybody,
Many people are experiencing Blue Screen crashes and one way of possibly fixing them is setting the BIOS to it's 'Last Known Good Configuration'. In this thread, I will tell you how to do this and hopefully stop your BSOD.

Instructions:
1.) Start your Computer
2.) Press F8 before it starts to load Windows
3.) If you have done this correctly, a screen should appear with the title 'Windows Advanced Options'. Once you have reached this screen, Use the arrow keys to select 'Last Known Good Configuration' and press Enter.

That's all there is to it! But please note, THIS IS NOT A DEFINITE FIX! THIS MAY STOP YOUR BLUE SCREEN OR IT MAY NOT!

Hope this helps,

I recently moved, and when I hooked my computer back up and started it up, it hung at the "Microsoft Corporation" screen with the green progress bar. I let it sit for an hour, and it didn't progress, so I hit the reset button.

On resetting, I can hit F8 and choose to use the last known good configuration, and it boots OK. Safe mode also seems to work. When I reset the computer from the start menu, however, it hangs again at the "Microsoft Corporation" screen. The only way I can get it to boot is to keep using the "Use last known good config" option in the boot menu.

I do remember seeing a warning about a trojan in my antivirus software (AVG) shortly before I packed up the computer, but AVG removed it. I just ran a Windows Defender and AVG scan, and nothing came up in either.

How can I fix Vista so that it boots normally? Using Vista Ultimate on an AMD64 X2 5400+, 2GB RAM, nVidia 8600 GTS...

Hi mamessner

Try:
1) Boot your computer as you have been, using the Last Known Good otion, and run another round of full-system malware scans - using the most thorough settings as possible (we want to make sure your system restore points are clean)
2) If all is OK, reboot into Safe Mode.
3) From Safe Mode, use the System Restore utility, choosing a restore point from after you removed the malware with AVG, yet before the current startup problem. [System Restore can be found in Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore].

Best of luck

And I have read that this option Starts Windows with the last registry and driver configuration that worked successfully. And since it was after I had installed a registry clean program, and used it to do a registry clean, that I started having this problem so I am assuming it would work ?
Also when I start my Laptop I first log into the account I originally did those 'changes' on and then the message appears and my desktop does not load. I then switch user's to my other account and windows vista starts up normally on that one, finally I switch back to my original account from this one and everything is back to normal, but it will only start-up normally if I do it exactly like that! AS you can see its a very long and tedious process to go through every time I turn my laptop on.

Any solutions appreciated!

I recently had to replace my hard drive. Prior to that I had been having an issue with sometimes when starting up windows, I would get that screen informing me about some issue that caused windows from starting and then prompting me to either start normally or from the last known good configuration. Choosing either option would always result in windows starting up fine. But about a month or so ago, it finally happened and windows wouldn't start up, it just kept returning to the same screen. After calling HP, they said I needed a new hard drive and sent it to me.

Now just over a month later, I just restarted my computer and I got that black screen again with the prompt. I hadn't payed it much attention with the first hard drive since windows would always start up fine. But now I don't want to keep doing this and end up having to replace the hard drive AGAIN when I've only had it for a short period. After installing the new HD, I pretty much reinstalled all the previous programs that I had on the old one.

So my question is, is there anything I can do to figure out what is causing this screen to appear each time I try to start windows and how can I make it stop? Could it be a certain program I have installed?

A:Start Windows normally or last known good configuration

I have been having a problem on my computer. First it crashes at a random time. Usually right in the middle of a program. At first when I tried to turn it on it wouldn't go on at all. (no beep then load start screen, just a really strange noise coming from the speakers, and the monitor going into sleep mode) I took it apart, the whole computer, and put it back together again. I tried to isolate the problem by booting it in parts. But this didn't help me figure out anything at all.(connected the ram and video card and booted. Then the disc drives. Then the hard drives).
Now, when I restart it. The asus loading screen comes on, then, it starts and gives me an option of two different versions of xp.
(I am guessing because of the two different hard drives). If I don't choose within 1-2 seconds it automatically tries to boot. I assume it chooses one for me.
After this screen it gives me options for how to load windows (the kind of normal post freeze screen), I have tried all of the options it gives with the same result, I usually choose last good configuration.
This causes it to blue screen (too fast to read, assuming blue screen of death) and crash and reboot. Starting the cycle over again.

The way I got past it was to press f8 before it automatically chose for me. Then it gave me a larger list of choices of how to boot. I chose to reboot from last good configuration. This caused it to go back to the original choice of hard drives but without the 1-2 second time limit. Al... Read more

Hi,

I am running Windows XP Home which dual-boots with Mandriva 2006.

I am having trouble booting into SafeMode when the system boots.

I use the F8 key usually but my USB keyboard stopped responding, so I bought a PS2 keyboard which solved the problem.

Now, some months later, the PS2 keyboard refuses to respond to the F8 during startup so I can't access the screen where I am offered the options to choose last known good config, etc.

The last time I recall the F8 key worked was when I installed Mandriva and had some basic installation problems which were resolved.

Since then I haven't needed to reboot into SafeMode.

I can reboot into SafeMode from msconfig>boot.ini tab>check the /SAFEBOOT box in the boot options section and restart.

Can someone pls point me in the direction of learning more about problem solving this as I've searched the forum and web but couldn't find anything related.

have a hp dv6000z with a new hard drive in it. decided to run the hard drive diagnostics through the bios. after doing so windows would hang at the loading the background screen.

did a restart and pressed F8 and selected last known good configuration. computer started up fine. restarted it and let it boot normally and hung at the same place it did before.

did this several times and will only start completely when selecting last known good configuration.

decided to go a system restore to two days ago when computer was starting up fine and it hung at the same screen. again did last known good configuration and it started up fine.

obviously dont want to have to press F8 and select last known good configuration every time I start machine.

any suggestions?

Why did you try "last known good configuration" anyway?

Any exclamation or question marks in "device manager"? And is your wireless adapter listed there under "network adapters"?

wifi icon is totally missing in taskbar?

Is there a "F" key to hold down or some other methodology when starting up windows that will bring me to the BIOS page that gives the options of Safe Start, Start with Last Good Configurtion, of "Normal" Start?

A:BIOS - how tofind page with START WITH LAST GOOD CONFIGURATION

F8 gives you safe mode option...Last known good configuration will pop up if windows isn't booting up, so if it is, its already a good configuration. Try the system restore utility instead (start->all programs->accessories->system tools->system restore), and for normal mode...you don't need to do anything :)

Unfortunately, I believe I'll need to do one of the above to get everything back to normal. A partial list of some of the recent changes made to my laptop include installing numerous MS updates, WMP11, all updated drivers...and uninstalling many unused applications. Some of these were later reinstalled and updated, too many to list. The main problem relates to no audio from the CD/DVD now, or from WMP 10 or 11, though SonicStage plays audio fine. I also get error msgs on boot up, related to Realtek HD Audio, that state:RTHDCPL.EXE ...Application failed to initialize (0xc00000033)ALCWZRD.EXE...Application failed to initialize (0xc00000033)ALCMTR.EXE...Application failed to initialize (0xc00000033)I've tried rolling back the driver, uninstalling the driver, etc. Device indicates "it's working properly," yet clearly something is amiss. I've never been alerted that I was missing key system drivers, or that some service needed to be enabled, etc., yet wonder if Registry Mechanic (which I've used a few times in many months) may've screwed something up. I've tried a long list of fixes over about a week, including contacting Sony Support, which was of little help: they simply said to use Last Known Good Config (LKGC) or pick a Restore Point. Swell.(1) As I understand it, LKGC doesn't fix missing or corrupted files, drivers, etc., and don't think one gets to choose that "LKGC" either. It's probably whatever the syste... Read more

(2) Viewing Restore Point choices, I find it doesn't go back beyond Oct. 10, 2007-- three days ago. Restoring to the 10th would NOT correct the problem, and why there are points further back in time is a mystery to me. I turned it off briefly last week, to permanently delete a file I didn't want showing up in a future restore, but it'd been on all the time before that. It won't even let me go back into September, let alone months ago. So, this option appears as useless as tits on a rooster. accompanies by a black screen. I have no USB attachments, disks in CD-Rom, or anything like this.

Any idea what is going on? I dont have a Windows Recovery or anything yet and I dont want to get ahead of myself. I would greatly appreciate it.

Historically a message in a bottle is a form of communication whereby a message is sealed in a container (archetypically a glass bottle, but could be any medium, so long as it floats and remains waterproof) and released into the sea or ocean. The phrase "message in a bottle" literally comes from the practice of placing an important but untargeted letter inside a (usually) glass bottle, sealing it, and allowing ocean currents to carry it away. There are indications that ancient Greek scientists used the message in a bottle to study the general flow of oceans and early militaries also used bottles to relay messages to distant troops, although this method did have a few tactical drawbacks. For more information please visit www.messagebybottle.com.
Thanks a lot.

I was wondering is 5ms response time good enough for FPS Gaming like COD: Black Ops, BFBC2 etc etc etc?I have been ordered this Asus monitor.
Or do you really need the 2ms version of Monitors? Is the performance worth the extra cost
Coz It costs a bomb here in my country to get a 2ms monitor compared to 5ms (both same screen size, Full HD resolution).
I wouldn't mind if the difference is too little to actually bothers me.

A:Is 5ms good enough for Gaming?

2ms is better, but 5ms is plenty fast enough.
That's the response rate on mine and I don't see any video problems.

A:Is this a good PC for gaming?

An idea

If you go to ebuyer/newegg/scan or any major hardware etailor.com you can price up all of the parts individually. Then you could see the total and you would know if you are getting a bargain or not.

From the spec I would think that you would have a great time with gaming on that rig.

Ciao!

A:Good enough for gaming?

LGA775 is dying but if you are strapped for cash, spending $160-200 (assuming your PSU is adequate) on a card would keep you going awhile. To give you a performance reference, the Core2 Quad performs on par with the current i3's. If current gaming benchmark's of the i3 is satisfactory, then you are good for awhile. If you think you need i5 or better performance, then a new system would be recommended.

Hello!

I want to buy a new gaming PC, and I was looking around for something good. Someone recommended me this build:

Motherboard: ASRock 990FX Extreme3
Fan: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003
Graphic card: Asus GTX760-DC2OC-2GD5
PSU: XFX TS Series 550W
HDD: Corsair Vengeance - DDR3
Processor: AMD Black Edition - AMD FX 6350

I'll have to pay around 873 euros for this PC. This includes Windows 7, 1 year warranty, anti virus (Bullguard Anti Virus), and a Sharkoon gaming set (keyboard and mouse).

Is this worth it? Can I play games like League of Legends with no lag? Is it a good pc for its price?? Any advice is much appreciated since I don't have that much knowledge on PCs. I thank you in advance for helping me!

A:Will this be a good gaming PC?

Well that price translates to about 1200 US dollars. IMO you can build a much better pc for that price. I would check out TS's PC buying guide. Their enthusiast level machine seems like a much better deal than the one you posted. Check it out here: http://www.techspot.com/guides/buying/page4.html

Minus the sound card and maybe a cheaper case it is about the same price as the one you posted.

Cheers

Also soes it seem like an ok PSU for price. Thanks for any help you can give.

A:Is This PSU good enough for a gaming rig?

The PSU needs to be mounted so that the fan is underneath and not on top. That way, it pulls the warm air from within the case and vents it away from your system through the PSU, with the air exiting your system through the grid of holes on its rear panel.

Hello, hi i just bought this laptop about 2 days or so ago, and i was wondering would these components in it be good for a game called Dragonica Online? because i play and it seems to lagg and i dont know what the problem is so here is what my info says:

Model: HP G61 Notebook PC

Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) II Dual-Core M300 2.00 GHz

Installed memory (RAM): 3.00 GB (2.75 GB usable) (i already have the game installed)

System type: 64-bit Operating System

Now i installed it the first day and it ran so smoothly but here is what else i have well this is what Cpu-z tells me anyways.

Clocks (Core #0):

Core Speed: 798.0 MHz

Multiplier:x4

Bus Speed: 199.5 MHz

HT Link: 1595.9 MHz

Cache:

L1 Cache: 2 x 64 KBytes (2-Way)

L2 Cache: 2 x 512 KBytes (16-Way)

Now this is the type of Graphics Card i have.

AMD M889G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200

And underneath it it says Memory: Size 336 MBytes

Now i know completley nothing about computers and laptops exept for how to use them and stuff like that and i am also running Windows 7 which i heard is horrible for gaming and i always thought the operating system had nothing to do with how games will run but what do i know right? well can some1 please explain to me why this game is lagging? it only takes up about 400MB on my pc or so so idk why this is happening if some1 could please help me out and tell me what i am missing this would be great thank you for wasti... A:Would this be good for gaming?

Laptops in general are not designed for gaming, and your ATI Mobility Radeon 4200 is probably only designed for some HD video and very light gaming. I've never heard of Dragonica Online, but I assume it's just a MMORPG and doesn't sound like a very demanding game, so you may want to check your internet connection/wireless card to see if that's causing the lag.

Will a pc with the following specs be good for gaming:
CPU: AMD Athlon II x2 245 2.9ghz dualcore;
GPU: Nvidia Geforce 9500 GT 512mb ddr3;
RAM: 4gig ddr2 800mhz;
PSU: 400 watts

A:Pc good for gaming?

Decent, 9500 GT is a bit weak for modern gaming though. Also, the 400W power supply has to be of high quality to really be enough for that. Corsair, OCZ, Enermax, Seasonic, Silverstone, PC Power & cooling...

With regards to the graphics card, you may want to wait a few months for the Radeon 5xxx series, they should be cheaper per performance, more energy efficient, and will have DX 11 capability...

A:New gaming Rig is t a good one?

Good swap on those components - put the money where the gaming performance is.

Also consider the 10% OC option for only $19 unless you plan to OC yourself - a cheap upgrade, although it may affect other choices.

The CoolerMaster HAF 912CoolerMaster HAF 912 is reported to run hot. You might want to consider another case. Or at least go for the case fan upgrade for $9 if it has places for more fans.

Under Optical Drive you have not checked the free upgrade to the ASUS Blu-Ray reader DVDRW combo drive

No operating system checked. Are you going to install some software you already have?

Looks like you will have a nice gaming system.

If you look at my sig, is this PC good for gaming? Because I have been having a hard time with certain games. Doom 3 works well for the most part but will lag up during combat when there is a lot of shadowing and dynamic lighting going on. As well as post processing effects like bluring and such. Now Far Cry seems to be slow ALL the TIME. Half Life 2 on the other hand works like a charm with everything turned ALL the way up. I am thinking that it might be my Video Card causing me all this grief cause the rest of my specs always seem to fall well within the recomended specs for each game. Can anyone suggest any changes to my System to improve performance for games.

Depends on the games you want to play. 1k-1.5k should buy you everything you need to run 95% of games flawlessly.

I read someone say earlier that radeon is coming out with a cheaper version of the 8800 pretty soon, you sure you want to blow the cash on an 8800?

I recently bought Team Fortress 2, and have had some trouble playing it. It will usually just freeze and crash whenever I try to play. Since the rest of my computer meets it's requirements, I assume that it is my integrated graphics card which is causing problems. A few years ago, my brother tried to purchase a new graphics card for Oblivion. He apparently had done the research, but when the card came, it didn't fit in our PCI slot. I am just looking a for an up-to-date gaming graphics card that will fit my slot.

P.S.-I found i random phone-jack card that fits in one of my PCI slots. The part of the card which you plug in (don't know the term) looks very similar to the plug on this card - newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131082

Let me know whether that card will work in my computer or not.

A:Looking for a good PCI card for gaming

That Powercolor card is a PCI card and should fit any PCI slot whether yours or your brother's. I can't account for it not physically fitting into your brother's PCI slot unless you were mistakenly trying to fit it into an AGP or PCI-E slot instead.

Good for running most games on medium-high settings. Not suited to hardcore gaming IMO. You should get the E7200 instead of your current CPU and invest more money in a better GPU, like the HD 4850, since that will affect game performance far more than the CPU.

Can you post the links to the parts, if applicable?

2GB DDR2 667 RAM
250GB Hitachi SATA HDD
650W CiT PSU
Windows XP Pro SP3

A:ATI 5570 any good for gaming?

Hi

I've reviewed the Motherboard and VGA specs and i can tell you that the video card will work with that motherboard without a problem.

Regarding the gaming experience it provides i think you're a 100% set, I am running WoW on full graphics on my Latitude E6400 which has an nvida quadro nvs 160m which is only about as 70% strong as the video card you've selected.

You should have absolutely no problem running those game on that card and that card on that motherboard!
Good luck and see you in game!

Hey guys,

I was planning on building a new computer next month, the computer will be used primarily for gaming. My goal is to achieve running the latest games on 1920x1080 maximum settings (anti-aliasing not a necessity, I think). To achieve this, I would need some help from the experts of SevenForums, so here's my current custom build I setup:

Any improvements I can make? My budget will around €1400/$1700 - but the less the build will cost the better! Please no AMD/ATI cards, I don't like those due to personal reasons. Also, I would like to note that I'm from Holland so no things like special promotions from NewEgg or whatever. Thanks for your help!

EDIT: If an alternative motherboard would be picked, please one with an integrated Wi-Fi adapter or one that can carry a PCI Wi-Fi adapter. Thanks!

A:Building a Gaming PC, is this good?

Looks like a nice build to me.

The only suggestion I might make is to see what the new GTX 760ti is like. I know the 780 was released a week or so back and the 770 a few days ago and if the performance of these 2 is anything to go by then I expect the 760 to be a great card.
I am not exactly sure on the release date, but I don't think it will be too far away now.

Paul.

I'd recommend a better graphics card.

If you are on a budget, you probably wouldn't need 16GB memory for gaming just yet. A $60 savings on 2x4GB modules, would go along way in getting a better graphics card. I'd recommend at least Radeon HD 7790 or the newer release Radeon R7 260X.

Hey--I'm thinking of buying a new PC and my main goal is for it to be a gaming computer (the only other thing I'll use it for is surfing the net or using Word and stuff like that).

Here are the specs (along with my questions):

case:
Soyo midtower Aluminum case/w 300 watt PSU

motherboard:
MSI K7N2-L motherboard, powered by NForce 2 chipset

cpu:

Athlon XP-BARTON 3000 400 2500 w/HSF (I suppose I'm worried about this: should I go Athlon or Pentium?)

RAM:
1Gig 3200 DDR 2 stick

Video card:
Radeon 9800 Pro 128 meg

storage:
Seagate 40g 7200 HDD

optical drive:
48x/24/48 CD-R/RW/ROM

Monitor:
add 19in Monitor

This with keyboard and mice and floppy which I didn't include in the listing is about $1500. Firstly: is that a good deal (am I getting ripped off or what?), should I go AMD or Intel?, will this computer be able to play games for a decent amount of time (I"m looking for lifespan of about 4-5 years)?

Thanks for your help in advance!

I thought this forum would be best to ask if this computer i am going to build would be good enough to play all the newer games with graphics up and no lag...

Here is the motherboard and cpu i am getting:
http://www.tcwo.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/st_prod.html?p_prodid=2258&sid=44oBmP0lY5Sq0qD

Its a 1.7 ghz cpu but i think it can be overclocked to almost 3ghz.

I will be getting a 40 gb hard drive, dvd drive and 512mb of ddr ram...

The video card i get will most likely be:

VGA APOLLO GF4 MX440 SE 128mb DDR W/TV Retail
Specifications:
Chipset:Nvidia Geforce4 MX440SE
Memory:128MB DDR
Memory Bandwidth: 1.3 GB/sec
4.8 Billion AA samples per second fill rate
350 MHz internal RAMDAC
4 texels per clock cycle
32-bit color with 32-bit Z/Stencil buffer
Ports VGA + S-video Out

I will be getting it from www.newegg.com for $71.

Now will this be good enough to play battlefield 1942 with the graphics and textures all the way up and no lag?

Thanks for your help...

Hi, I'm looking to get a gaming headset since my Dad doesnt want a 5.1 surround sound system. I've looked at the Altec Lansing AHS602i which seemed pretty good to me from the reviews and price, but since it isnt actually true 3d sound, I looked at other, "True 5.1 surround sound" like Turtle Beach Ear Force AK-R8 which seem to sound superior based on reviews (cnet and such), but is twice the cost and need their own sound cards which slows down the computer (Crysis my main game now). My question is, anyone had experience with the simulated 3d sound like from the Altec or is the "True 5.1" headphones the only way to go if i want great sounding games despite the high cost and performance hit? Thanks.

A:Good gaming headset to buy?

Well I think all of those surround sound headsets would be really expensive...I personally just go for a good headset that has good sound and mic output....thats cheap
