centralized program updates center

Q: centralized program updates center

Hey guys,

I hope i m posting in the correct thread, so my problem is that i m looking for some enterprise level network management tool, to centralize program updates for end user . The basic idea to roll out updates from a controlled environment for programs like mozilla, java updates, everything what the end user should update periodically, but without the problem of restarting and pausing their work on their pc. This would be for windows pc s . I know windows server has WSUS, to rollout windows updates, but i want to manage all updates.
Any ideas, about a product existing which could do this , be it payed or a free one ? ( i m guessing there s a slight chance for existing for free something of this caliber)

Thanks alot,
Steve

I have 6 x Win7 PCs and a W2K3 server running on a network.
Is there a way to save bandwidth from my ISP by downloading MS updates to one location on the network and distributing to the other PCs?

Hi,

I'm contemplating configuring a Windows 7 system I have sitting here as a central virus scanner. I'm looking at two concurrent scenarios;

(1). Scan files downloaded by family members
(2). Run scans across my server from the central machine

For (1) I can easily set all download programs like Free Download Manager, DAP, Getright or whatever to always save to a drive on the virus testing machine. Infected files would be sent to a quarantine folder, and clean files would be sent to a "clean" folder.

Likewise for (2) a scan of the map drives each night is easy to set up, though I need a list of files to ignore to prevent false positives.

A couple of questions though;

1. How to make Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome always save to the testing machine, and not to the local machine

2. Any recomendations on what software might offer the best security and flexibility (and I know there are litterally dozens out there, but I'm hoping some one who has worked in corporate environments who use similar virus techniques might have some valuable insights and experiences to share)

3. I'd like to have alerts sent to my machine if anything undesirable is detected.

The network configuruation is 7 Windows 7 client systems, 1 windows XP client and 1 XP system running as a server with coldfusion and IP camera software. These are connected to a gigabit DLink switch and then a netgear WNR3500 router. All cabling and systems support Cat6. All of the Windows 7 clients ... Read more

A:Centralized virus protection for home network

Theoretically yeah, in a way it's nice.

But there are couple of problems I can spot in first look:You are running different versions of Windows (ok, not really bad problem, but may cause some uncomfortability while configuring.
If I understand you right you want AV on only one PC and no security programs on other ones..... (it's a bit problem. Maybe you will be able to protect yourself from downloads and stuff like that. But you will still be vaulnurable to attacks like browser hijack, valnurabalities on java, flash, pdf reader, Buffer overflow and so on..... ). If you manage to configure all your Internet traffic to go through the central PC, then in my opinion it will affect your Internet speed on the PC that wants to et that data. (as it will have to go through central PC first and be scanned by your AV)
But if you want to install AV (client program on all your PCs, and server program on one of them) and be able to control all of them from thr one PC. It's different situation. Then you can buy enterprise version of almost any AV and be able to do this. (I think some home user versions give this option aswell)

But, I am not really professional and I have never really managed enterprise enviroment, so I may be mistaked. those were just my first thoughts.
So let me read more about situations like this, maybe I will be able to come up with solution when I know more about it

Till then consider those points...

I am looking for a program that I can install on a centralized server and run scans from single client machines. I am not aware of anything that will let me do this. I have about 300 machines and need something besides installing on 300 machines. I would like to hear all suggestions on ways to handle this task.

We have an MSI all-in-one PC with touchscreen. I'm hoping to find a software package to centralize the happenings in our home. I've done some searching, but I don't really know where to start.

We're hoping to find a software package that...
- Checks multiple accounts for new mail
- Present a memo board so we can leave each other short messages
- Track a calendar so we can all add and update appointments
- Warn of upcoming birthdays, chores that are due, garbage day, etc...
- When idle, show photos, a clock, alerts, etc.
- Shopping list
- Works with the touch screen for most functions
- Eventually will control the X10 or ZWave power controllers for lights, etc.

...basically, replacing the whiteboard on our fridge, the calander on the wall, the constant nagging the kids to do their chores, and the lack of communication between us when we set up appointments, etc.

Does anyone know of software that does this? How about some Google search terms that might find some results?

Thanks!

A:Looking for centralized Home software; Memo's, chore lists, calendar..

I doubt you will find a single software package that can do everything you are asking for.

A few questions you should answer:
You have a single "Home PC", not a "Home Server" with multiple client PC's, correct?
Do more than one person need to use this single PC at the same time?
Does everybody log in and use the same Windows user account?
Are there any restrictions for some users such as children, or does everybody have Administrator authority?
Are you looking for a free solution, or are you willing to pay $$$?
Are you willing and capable to put in whatever time and effort is needed to accomplish all this.
MS Office Outlook email client can do a lot of what you want, but it is not free.
Windows Live Mail and Thunderbird are free, but have fewer features and capability.
Some of this might be done with Windows security and permissions, depending on how you are using User accounts and storing data.

You may be able to find a Business or Individual in your area that specializes in Home Automation that can help you, but it will not be free.

I hope I'm wrong and someone knows of a package like you want, but I believe if such a software package exists, it would be well known and used by a LOT of people, including me.

Hope this helps,
David

(I hope this post is in the right place. If not, I apologize.)

Hi everyone,

I'm having some problems with my Windows XP SP3 desktop computer after a crash a few weeks ago. I took the computer in and had it repaired (the people said they did a repair installation of windows, which I had tried myself and failed). After a little tweaking, it seems to be back to normal except for two things: my webcam and my scanner needed to be re-installed, only re-installing them gave me the message "There was a problem when installing your new hardware. Your new hardware might not work properly" and now my webcam program (bundled with the webcam) "amcap" and my scanner program "Scanwizard" both say that I don't have the respective hardware attached to my computer when I try and run them. I have tried uninstalling the hardware and restarting then re-installing them and have had no success. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, and I would greatly appreciate some advice and/or technical help.

Thanks in advance,

Jomon

The repair install might not have been the right thing to do. You may be dealing with partial drivers left-overs... You might try using a "driver cleaner" and see if to can remove these partial drivers

just updated my Lenovo X1 from work (win7pro) with the thinkvantage updates.

Before the updates I was able to select which network folder to keep available out-of-connection via the synchronisation center.

Now this feature is no more available after the updates.

Where can I set this up again?

Thank you in advance for your comments.

Yesterday I started getting pop-ups, many of them looking like they are real Microsoft Explorer messages talking about malware. And to go to a website to have the malware removed. I have since started getting different types of pop-ups. Also when I open Windows Security Center it shows Automatic Updates as OFF, I click on the "Turn on Automatic Updates" and I get a message after a couple of minutes saying that it is unable to, and to do it through Control Panel/System/Automatic Updates tab. When I go there it says that the Automatic Updates are turned on, but Security Center still shows them as being off.

Yesterday I ran a Symantec scan and it found no viruses, then I ran LavaSoft AdAware and it found a lot of items (mostly cookies) and removed them. And then today I ran SpyBot Search and Destroy and it found 16 items that were deleted and 1 that it could not delete. It said to restart the computer and then run SpyBot again. This time it did not find any problem.

Here is my Hijack This Log. I have a headache, so I am going to bed once I post this, and will check to see if anyone replied in the morning.

Had to do a successful repair install because of numerous system errors (current update KB2871997 keeps 'reinstalling')

Had a number of quirks but got everything going. Noticed today that there was no Media Center. To get media center back...I tried control panel add features but nothing happened...except my Windows Update history is all gone...shows no updates installed.

What now...do I again repair install ?

Also...I downloaded and burned the current iso file as recommended in this post (current update KB2871997 keeps 'reinstalling') and all seemed well - minus the few quirks - but now I have no Media Center" and all records of updates seem to be gone ?

Do I try another repair install...and if so...should I use my regular DVD licensed install disk...which must have Media Center on it...or is the some where else I can get an iso file from that has up to date updates...etc...and media Center included ?

Or..can I bring Media Center back to the original iso install dvd from my original installation dvd ?

Thanks....TiminAz

Windows Security Center says that Automatic Updates is turned off. When I click on the button to "Turn on Automatic Updates", a dialog box pops up that says it can't ("We're sorry. The Security Center could not change your Automatic Update settings..." It then instructs me to go to the control panel, System tab, and to turn them on myself. When I do that, that window says that Automatic Update ARE turned on (the Automatic (Recommended) radio button is selected).

I would assume that this is all happening as an after effect of having just been hit with the XP Total Security 2011 trojan. As far as I can tell, I have successfully gotten rid of that trojan, thanks to the fine help and instructions I found here at BP.

But whatever the cause, I now have this problem.

Ideas, anyone?

Windows security center says automatic updates is off, System Properties says it's on.

A red shield with a white x appears on the lower-right taskbar as Windows Security Alerts. In Windows Security Center, the Automatic Updates is set to off. Turning on Automatic Updates displays the message "We're sorry. The Security Center could not change your Automatic Updates settings. To try to change these settings yourself, go to System in in Control Panel. On the automatic updates tab, select Automatic (recommended), and then click ok." Following the above instructions only led me to find that the setting is already on Automatic (recommended).

I've run services.msc and Automatic Updates does not appear in the list of services.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi. I have just gotten rid of the XP Anti-Spyware 2011 rogue as indicated in here. However, there seems to be still one problem regarding the Automatic Updates for Windows Security Center. The red shield with a white x appears on the lower-right taskbar as Windows Security Alerts. In Windows Security Center, the Automatic Updates is set to off. Turning on Automatic Updates displays the message "We're sorry. The Security Center could not change your Automatic Updates settings. To try to change these settings yourself, go to System in in Control Panel. On the automatic updates tab, select Automatic (recommended), and then click ok." Following the above instructions only led me to find that the setting is already on Automatic (recommended).I've looked up the problem to see how to resolve the issue and found out I need to reconfigure the Automatic Updates and the Background Intelligent Transfer Service under Services. The Automatic Updates does not appear in the list of services. The Background Intelligent Transfer Service has its status started but the startup type is "manual", which should be "automatic." Changing it to "automatic" will only make it revert to "manual" after restarting.I'm thinking there's a registry key that hasn't been fixed and it's showing the alert icon and that the security center is reading "off" when I think it should be "on" as indicated in the automatic updates... Hello All:

I will be wiping my hard drive today for the first time thanks to some nasty viruses. I have Windows XP MCE (not really sure what edition 2002/2005?).

The people that were helping me in the virus forum said that I had to download Service Pack 3. I understand that, no problem. However, I went on the Microsoft Updates website for that particular OS and there are 129 of these things. Do I have to download and install all of them?

How exactly do the updates work? When they roll out a Service Pack 4, for example, do they roll all of the components from Service Packs 1 - 3 into that or do they assume that you already have those downloaded.

Thanks for all your help in advance!

Ania

A:Windows Xp Mce (media Center Edition) Updates

I suggest just starting with the one that offers SP3. That should severely reduce the number of other updates that you have do to do individually. There is much information about Windows Update, how it works, critical updates, etc...available by using Google. Before you attempt to install SP3, I suggest that you take a look at the items discussed at the topic, Windows XP SP3 Information...available at the 1st page of the XP Forum.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/146857/windows-xp-service-pack-3-sp3-information/FWIW: You do need SP1 installed in order to install SP3. You do not have to have SP2 installed, since it is included as part of SP3. http://www.winsupersite.com/faq/xp_sp3.asp See 1st sentence of answer to 2d question.Louis

A few weeks ago I did two updates - one was the Dell Support Center update and the other was an update entitled KB951978. Since then, I'm unable to shut down my computer - I get an error message asking me to end "sprtcmd.exe". I hit "end now", and usually it shuts down OK. In addition, it's taking much longer for web pages to load and applications to run.

I'm scared to uninstall the updates - is it safe to do that? Everything was perfectly fine until then. I saw the other thread with tips on how to do it.

My question is: do I uninstall the Dell Support Center UPDATE or the entire thing itself? I'm afraid to get rid of it altogether.

Also, should I try uninstalling the KB951978 update? I have no idea or comfort level with what that is.

Thanks!

Client machine came in infected with a Fake Alert and bundled with it was a TDSS Rootkit. The client was running AVG Free and the paid version of SuperAntiSpyware. SAS caught part of the infection and prompted the client to reboot their computer, upon the reboot they experienced a BSOD STOP: C21A
I used the saved copies of the registry from inside the system restore folder from a couple days earlier and was able to get the machine up and running.

Alright. So a couple weeks ago, I had the XP Anti Spyware 2012 virus on my computer. I used the removal guide at bleepingcomputer.com to remove it, and things were fine for a while. Now, my Automatic Updates on Windows Security Alerts will NOT turn on. The thing is, when I go to do it manually, it's checked as Automatic. I still get the alert that it's turned off though. I have run Malware Bytes and removed all of the problems, and nothing comes up anymore on the scans. Someone please help? I saw a similar thread to this, and I'm trying to figure out how that person fixed it. They seemed to have the EXACT same problem. Also, I keep getting the 'blue screen of death' every so often. More than I ever have. Does this have something to do with the virus playing around with the computer? THANKS!

A:Windows Security Center Automatic Updates Problem

You could have problems with the registry caused by:

1.) Entries from the virus still in the registry

or

2.)There could be remnants on your computer left over by the virus.
3.) Have you tried to perform a "Repair Install" using the XP disk?

Computer is a Windows 7 64 bit with SP1 computer that I've been working on for a cousin of mine. Cleaned out a quite a bit of junk and malware already via my the antivirus (Symantec Endpoint Protection), as well as with malwarebytes and did a registry clean up with CCleaner.  Initially the security center didn't even show up in the Services, now it does.  Only problem I still have is an inability to do any updates on this computer. I keep getting this popup.

I'm running out of solutions and fear I can do more harm than good if I keep stabbing in the dark. Any ideas guys?

A:Security Center shows it's started but I still can't turn on or get updates

I would try installing a free copy of malwarebytes and running a flash scan and a full scan, in that order. After all items are found and removed I would run unhide, found at http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

Please let us know the results.

So, I was thinking about installing Windows 10 Technical Preview on my computer. But, now I have backed out due to concerns of it not being finished. My problem is that the Windows Updates icon in the Notifications Center keeps saying Windows 10 Technical Preview is ready. I have already hidden the 10 Tech Preview Update. How do I get it to stop saying this?

A:Notification Center: Updates Icon Keeps Saying Windows 10 Tech Preview

You must have intended to try Win10 and record of that attempt has been saved somewhere on your computer.
Press Windows key plus R then type msconfig in the Run box, under the Startup tab Uncheck anything relating to Windows 10 TP. If you do Uncheck something you'll be prompted to reboot. In some cases a brute force procedure is needed and usually required editing the Registry, not a place for the inexperienced to play as one misstep will cause Windows to not work.

Microsoft has made available for download a number of updates targeting the Windows Media Center component of some editions of Windows 7, including Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate. The new refreshes offered to customers are designed to resolve reliability issues reported by them, such as Windows Media Center displaying Low Bit Rate overlay messages, but also problems related to TV tuner functionality. A total of four updates are currently up for grabs via the Microsoft Download Center, for both the 32-bit and 64-bit flavors of Windows 7.

Hi. Am new to this forum and hope someone can help. I imagine my problem has been seen by many before, but I searched this forum and didn't find it.

Every time I want to shut down my PC, the shutdown process gets stuck by Media Center not closing whatever process it must be running in the background at startup (I'm not manually opening Media Center). So the only way I can get the PC to shut down properly is by clicking on the button to end the process. Then the PC shuts down fine. Very annoying to have to do it EVERY time I want to shut down.

Hope someone knows how to fix this!?

I'm trying to help out my sister on her laptop (Compaq Vista 32bit). Here are the problems:

Can not access Windows Security Center.. It comes up on the tool bar red with the X. When you try to open it either off the tool bar or even through the Control Center you get: A "open with" window to select the program to open "rundll32.exe". I have tried the tutuorial on this site to change security center from disabled to automatic, this did not work, it defaults back to disabled. Will not start up the Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus program automatically on startup. You must manaul start and either run as adminstrator to start or go through the "open with window" process. All program starts require to go through the "open with window" approach and some that does not work and you need to right click on the program and "run as administrator" to start the program (i.e. intenet exployer).I have manually run Microsoft Security Essentials and removed numerous virus and trojans.

I am familar with XP and Windows 7, not Vista...

Any assistance will be appreciated

A:Security Center and Program Permissions

Hallo Brack, It sounds like you could have corrupted system files from malware & more than likely still have active malware.
First off try these and see if the make any difference with things such as the Security Center not starting;

Check Disk - chkdsk

After this run System files command this will check for and attempt to repair any corrupted System files, please note that this can only fix one problem at a time so you may have to run it several times;

System Files - SFC Command

Next a good place to start is to download Malwarebytes free standalone scanner, update it & run a Scan;

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: Malwarebytes

IF malwarebytes will not install, update or run then look at these other options see if your computer will allow you to run this free online scan;

Free ESET Online Antivirus Scanner

If not you may have to go to a friends computer Super anti spyware has a portable scanner you can run from a USB stick Caution:( any of your USB sticks may be infected so it would pay to borrow or purchase a new one, please do not infect your friends computer)
This portable scanner has a file name that malware is not supposed to recognize so it may give you enough leeway to get things running again;

SUPERAntiSpyware.com - SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner

The next option is a rescue disk which you can download and burn to a CD on another computer then insert the disk in your computer & Restart so the disk can scan before Windows loads... Read more

A:Every program opens with Media Center

Hi there

Try clicking on the start menu (Windows orb) and select the option 'Defaults Programs'. Once the panel open up select the option 'Set your default programs' From here you should be able to choose which program can open which type of files.

If the program you want to open the files with is not showing then go back to 'Default Programs' and select the option 'Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program'. From here you can select the file extension you wish to change programs with and select the option 'Change Program' From here you should be able to change, or browse to the program you wish to open that file type.

Hope this helps!

This may be a stupid question, with an easy answer (I hope), but it seems that no matter where I search, or how hard I look, I've not be able to find a way to have Windows Media Center let me add reminders to future programs.

Is there any way to WMC pop-up a little screen letting you know that a show is coming on? Like let's say that Weeds is coming on tomorrow at 8pm and I'd like my WMC to remind me at around 7:55pm tomorrow night, that it's coming on.

I can set it to record in advance, but not this.

Any ideas?

Hello Vista People:

I am not a regular here as I don't normally deal with Vista these days but I have a client that had an infection. Eset online scanner showed it as a SH292.vir worm. it was removed and subsequent scans with Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, AVG, Kasperski have all come up clean. Issue is now that Windows Firewall, Windows Update will not run. I was able to repair Security Center using a script I had from 3 years ago on a flash repair drive but I am unable to get the FW or Updates to go. Both say "windows security cannot start the requested service, File not found"

Please advise.

How do I get Security Essentials in Security Center's left pane as the default spyware protection program?

I am running Vista 32 bit. I downloaded from MS the Windows Mobile Device Center installation file. When I run the install, the progress bar gets down to the very end, says 0 secs left, then it sits there for about 15 seconds and then the progress bar goes backward and all the install dialogs go away with no message. And the program is not installed. When I rebooted the screen is blank, Vista does not boot fully.

I restored the computer from an image I had made previously with Norton Ghost. I downloaded a new copy of WMDC and ran the install, it did the same thing.

Any ideas?

Thanks

A:Cannot install program Windows Mobile Device Center

I was avoiding restarting the computer for fear it would give a blank screen again, but I did restart it and it seems ok, so it did not corrupt Vista like before.

But I do not see WMDC in the Start menu. Now I am wondering if it is not supposed to show up since WMDC is just a driver, (I think) not really an application. Maybe it will start automatically when I plug in the phone, which is not here right now, my wife returns with it later.

Several times tonight I've gotten the following message from Windows Security Center:
Virus Protectiion Out Of Date

Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security reports that it might be out of date. Click Recommendations for suggested actions you can take.

Yet when I click on my PC-cillin Internet Security icon I get a message informing me that my antivirus settings meet recommended levels, so I figure I should be protected. However, whenever I click on PC-cillin's Update Components, I get this message:

Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security

An error occurred while connecting to the Internet. Please make sure your Internet connection is properly functioning and try again.

It doesn't make sense to me that I should be getting these error messages. I have more than a year left on my PC-cillin subscription, so it definitely should not be out-of-date. Also, I am already online and able to check e-mail and surf when I get the message telling me that an error occurred while connecting to the Internet and that I should make sure my Internet connection is properly functioning.

I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who is able to tell my why I am suddenly getting these inappropriate error messages. Thank you very much.

My Windows 8.1 action center behavior of the anti-virus protection with message saying-"turned off", while the-
(task manager)-processes has the anti-virus program "seen". The (task manager)-startup has the anti-virus program "enabled" & (task manager)-details has the anti-virus program "running".
Question: Is it ("normal") for the Windows 8.1 action center to have the anti-virus currently not monitored and "turned off"?
I can't turn it on, while seeing a mini page to do so at action center.
Will the problem be a "prelude" to (refresh) or (reinstall) the operating system, because of "malfunction" of the action center-
and the anti-virus program together?, or is Windows Defender the choice for action center protection?
Note: Windows Defender did "turn on"as a (second choice protection), as  my anti-virus subscription
wouldn't turn "on". WebrootSecureAnywhere is the anti-virus subscription.

I get this window now when I sync my PDA with Windows Mobile Device Center in Win7 64bit:
There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program or, if one is already installed,
create an association in the Default Programs control panel.

When I first stared syncing, everything was fine... this is a very recent install. It synced fine before I installed Office 2007, including Outlook. After I installed Office it
synced fine too, but then I realized that I could sync with Google and decided that I didn't need Outlook at all on my system... I just used it for syncing and backing up my
Contacts anyway. After I uninstalled Outlook, I started getting this pop up whenever I put my PDA into its cradle... even though I have all email and contact syncing turned off locally...
Google is used as a fake Exchange server and it syncs fine that way... after reading some forums, I installed Live Mail onto my system, hoping that having an
email program installed would make it self default, but alas that is not the case. Everything in the Control Panel Default programs seems to be ok, and Live Mail is
my default email program... what else am I missing here? Thank you!

Anyone know of a program that will let you chose to stop all these programs running on my computer that are just there to notify you of when an update is out.

Programs like
Adobe reader
Quicktime
Flash
Java
Most Browsers
Virus programs
And almost anything you install for that matter
It would be nice to turn off all of these in some program then having to look all over the Internet on how to stop each one on startup.

I've used Computer Associates eZ antivirus for years. Six weeks ago it identified 2 new, I guess, files as viruses. It could not "clean" them.

Several on-line scanners confirmed their presence.

I'd been holding off on the latest version(update) because of the problems some reportred. After so many months, I assumed they had it cleaned up.

I installed it hoping it would find the problem. It worked terrible, when it worked.

I've un-installed that program and installed AVGfree. It immediately identified the troublemakers and deleted them. On-line scans confirm that they're gone.

Since then I've been unable to update AVG. It's a known issue.

Is there a sign here that these free programs are faulty, by design, in an effort to force you into a pay version?

I tried to update both Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware and both were blocked from doing so. My default browser is Firefox and it worked just fine, including Add On updates.

One of the two programs indicated my firewall might be blocking access, so I turned off the firewall with no joy. Began just looking at other stuff and stumbled across the fact IE7 was in "Working Off Line" mode. Refreshed it and got online, then closed IE. Tried updates again and both progs updated normally.

So, although I do not presently have a problem, I'm at a loss to understand why IE7 being in Off Line mode would prevent Malwarebytes and SAS from updating. Can anyone shed some light on this? Maybe even a guess?

I could be wrong about this - and probably am? But even if IE7 is not your default browser - it still controls your internet cache? It is part of a windows system file that is needed when downloading an update to any app. This would be my guess?

Hello ,

okay now , do you have the program called (sonic record now) on your system ?

if you do then it is part of a cd /dvd recording software that is made by Roxio

to solve this issue you will have to go to their website and get upgrades for the installer

here is the link

this is just a guess since i do not know if this program is on your system but it does have that type of updater for its software

The Windows Essential Security program stopped working on my computer. It stated that the virus definitions were out of date and that my computer may not be protected. At that time, I attempted to update the program several times but it continued to state that the last update was several days before. I checked for system updates on my computer and restarted but I still had the same problem.

I downloaded Avira and ran a full system scan and also a scan for rootkits. None were detected. Avira appeared to be working correctly--the status window indicated that real-time protection was on, and that internet protection was on, but it stated that my computer may still be at risk. Below this notice, it suggested that I update the virus definitions to correct the problem. I did this, but nothing changed. I uninstalled and reinstalled the program again, but it still states the same thing.

I am worried that there may be a virus which is preventing the anti-virus software from functioning properly, but I am not clear about how to get to the bottom of this problem.

I was sent here after posting on the Vista Forum. For the past several weeks I have not been able to update programs such as my virus scanner, my accounting program (Peachtree) and other programs that require frequent updating. The response I get is "unable to connect to the server" with the virus scanner and "No internet connection" with the accounting program.

Today, I attempted to download a game from RealArcade after signing up for their game pass. I was able to attempt the game download but was unable to succeed. Received a msg that "A network related error has occurred. Please ensure your computer is connected to the Internet and click Yes to retry now or No to exit" Multiple attempts have not succeeded.

I thought perhaps the problem downloading today may be related to the program update issue. Maybe not.

I am connected on the internet using Bellsouth DSL and usually have no problem downloading. In fact downloaded and deleted Vuze today. Nothing was downloaded using Vuze, after one attempt that failed, I uninstalled the program. However, I had no problem downloading the two programs used to create the attached file and the following text from one of the programs.

Attempts made to correct:

1. Restored my computer to a date prior to the issue begining.
2. From the command prompt ran sfc, which detected problems but was unable to repair all of them.

Anyway, I'm at a loss as to how to repair the problem. Any ass... Read more

Hello AU_Tygrz,

I would have preferred some other troubleshooting to have been done before referrring you here. I'm not seeing any malware in your logs. See if you can get this online scan done to search for any remnants. It can take some time, so please be patient and allow it to run it's full course:

**Vista users - right click on the IE icon and run as administrator

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/par...avwebscan.html

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:Close any open programs
Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

3. Click Run at the Security prompt. The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database. Please be patient as this can take several minutes.Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
Click View scan report at the bottom.

Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

Hello,

I originally received a message from avast telling me I had a trojan called wr-1-77[1].exe. The full title was \content.IE5\31Q3SELJ\wr-1-77[1].exe\[UPX]

I conducted several scans with avast, AVG, and ad-aware and removed all files they suggested. However, the problem did not go away. I consulted several threads related to wr-1-77.exe and ended up scanning my system with regrun. While frustrated and confused, I may have hit the button to remove file too many times. My computer had some problems after that, and I system restored to a time before I ran regrun, although some problems still persist (i.e., not linking Microsoft Office files to the program, and forcing me to manually choose what program I want to open Word, Excel, and PPT files).

Below is the log from Hijack This, and I have attached the extra.txt
Furthermore, Step 2 (Panda ActiveScan) could not be completed. I made sure my active virus scans were turned off and I allowed activex, but I could not make more than 50% progress on the scan. I hope I did everything correctly and am not wasting your time on this part.

Hi all,

I do a lot of consulting in my spare time to home users. I often end up getting their computers secure and ready for use. I was wondering if anyone knows of a program that is intelligent enough to scan the system and apply windows updates as needed performing reboots, and resuming installation.

Basically I am looking for a standalone utility that can perform these actions until windows is completely patched. I have seen proprietary solutions for this that companies like Geek Squad use and was wondering if there is a commercial solution that provides similar functionality.

I am not interested in a program that collects updates and downloads them for building into images or SXL, but a nice little app that connects to microsoft and downloads the needed updates and restarts as needed.

If anyone has heard of any such solution I would be most interested in hearing your feedback.

Thank you!

Hi guys,

Awesome site with very knowledgeable people. I hope you guys can help me. Thanks in advance.

Summary:

I bought a new custom build computer, built by NCIX. Installed Win 7 x64 ultimate SP1. Installed wireless manager and then tried to apply all the windows updates. There were 100+ updates. I installed them incrementally in batches of 10 or so. Sometimes I would run into an issues but then restore and try again with maybe 5 updates etc. Now I have run into a problem where I cannot install any more updates without breaking the system.

Problem:

Can't run any non-windows program. Ex. can't launch wireless manager, nvidia panel etc. Can run windows programs only, but not the IE browser or any browser.

Steps taken:

1. Ran SURT: It asked me to install hotfix KB947821. I did and it was successful. See LOG attached please.
2. Ran SFC scan and it was detected errors and fixed them. Ran again and all good -no errors. See CBS.zip.

Please see windows error codes attached. I get same error when running any non-windows program.

A:After windows 7 updates: No program will launch: error 0xc0000005

The c0000005 error is an Access Denied type error
CheckSUR found nothing amiss, and SFC managed to fix the only error it found - which appears to be unrelated to the problem you're experiencing.

I suspect that your problem is with the hard drive, or with permissions.

Have you installed any 'tweaking' programs of any kind?
Have you installed an AV (which one?)

What happens if you create a new User (with Admin privileges) and use that? does the problem persist?

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands..

ICACLS "C:\Program Files"
ICACLS "C:\Program Files (x86)"
ICACLS C:\ProgramData

post the results.

Here are some instructions to make life easier
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories ? then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight ? select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left ? select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

I hope I did everything correctly and am not wasting your time on this part.

Hello, sorry if this was posted already!

Is there any program that automatically looks for and updates for example your hard drive drivers, mouse drivers, chipset drivers etc to the latest version?

I know for sure that Windows Update doesn't do this, and manually checking through device manager always states that windows has the latest drivers available....from 2005.

Is it possible to reinstall W7 in order to get rid of Windows updates, without losing my installed Programs and their updates?

I have been building and servicing computers (at home for friends and family) since 1996. About 100 builds total. Taught data entry and maintained 20+ computers for a manufacturing plant for over ten years.
I am NOT a programmer, I am NOT an IT tech, but I do know my way around a computer.

I built my current computer about six years ago to, hopefully last 15+ years: Corsair 600T case. (I think it has a bathroom with a shower in there somewhere, it's huge),| PSU= PC Power&Cooling 760w Silencer (SLI/Crossfire ready), | ASUS MoBo= Sabertooth 990FX (1st version), | CPU= AMD 8320FX 8-core with Noctua air cooler, | 16Gigs HyperX Memory, | Video cards= 2 HIS IceQ-X HD6870 in Crossfire, | Hard Drives=Crucial M4 SSD 128 GiG with W7 Pro using a Seagate 320 Gig Barracuda for Page file and program specific files, | Seagate Constellation 1TB with W7 pro (my gaming drive), | Samsung 850 EVO 500Gig with W10 Home, | Internal Seagate Constellation 1TB for back up, | WD 500 Gig plugged into an external SATA drive dock for back up.

This system ran without issues of any kind until I installed Win 10 in July. Now my Win 7 drive won't boot.
Before conclusions are jumped on, I've tried it.
Been in forums; Windows 10 forum, ASUS forum, MS formu, Bleepingcomputers. I've had E-Mail discussions with four different ASUS techs, Phone calls for total of ove... Read more

A:Re-install Win7 saving Programs and program updates.

"I can access files and folders through File Explorer"
How are you doing that if it won't boot?

Did you attempt system restore from some kind of winpe boot media?
