Capture Linux OS image using WDS (Windows Deployment Services)

Q: Capture Linux OS image using WDS (Windows Deployment Services)

Hello. I have an issue.

I want to capture an Linux OS custom image or a fresh one and want to use WDS to complete the job. Could it be done?

I know I can use WDS from server to deploy WIN 7 or anyother Win OS to other systems. But can I use the same service to deploy Linux OS to other new systems and how can I go around in capturing the Linux OS image.

I don't want to use any third party application to capture and deploy both WIN and Linux images. I can use SysPrep to capture Windows image, but how do I go about capturing Linux image?

Is there an in-built app for Linux to capture an image like SysPrep (for WIN)???

Please help.

I have configured a stand alone windows 2012 Std. OS with WDS, set up all the necessary items
loaded both the boot.wim and image.wim into wds server.
the system deploys the standatrd win7 Pro image without issue.
The problem comes when I try to use the image capture wizard.
The client laptop boots to pxe without issue I get the screen that  lets me choose  what I want to load
when I choose the capture image item it loads as normal,(as the deploy does except that all that happens is I get a black screen with a white arrow cursor. the screen never turns blue like you would expect and the image capture wizard never appears.
I have followed all of the steps on the WDS set up page for creating a image capture boot file however as I said it never appears.
Can someone assist?

I'm attempting to follow this guide to capture a Windows 7 image:

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles-tutorials/windows-7/Deploying-Windows-7-Part10.html

I have a test PC with Windows 7 installed on it waiting to be captured.

I've installed the MDT 2013 Update 2 and Windows ADK for Windows 10 to my technician PC.  Unlike this guide, however, I have no tree under 'Deployment Shares'.  So I have no option to import an OS.

This seems to be a stumbling block to actually capture an image.  Is there something I'm missing?  Is there something that needs to be configured that I don't know about?  I'm still learning this whole process so it's entirely possible there's
something glaringly obvious I don't see.

First, whats the difference between WDS and MDT?

Second, do I have to have a Windows 2003 Server or can I set this up on a network with nothing but XP PRO machines?

Finally, If we buy 30 dell computers with xp pro already installed is it neccesary to even use WDS?

Just some background, we are trying to set up a network where some users are restricted from doing certain tasks on their computers and over the network while others have admin rights. I'm not sure if I have to start from scratch or just network the computers and then implement AD for group polices, etc.

Has anyone played around with server 2008 and Vista? I'm asking because I work in an IT department and I've been playing with the deployment services to upgrade our workstations to vista as our xp licenses expire in the fall. The computers are fully capable of running vista (Index scores of 4.7 to 5.2).

I know some of you may think i'm crazy, but the UAC, at least from an administration standpoint is the best thing microsoft came up with. UAC and Deepfreeze should make sure some likely idiot won't screw up my workstations... "Protect users from themselves"

Any tips, hints would be appreciated.

A:Windows deployment services + Vista

Hi Pbb321,
From what I have heard Vista workstations need a Vista License server (something to that affect) and if a vista workstation cannot contact that license server in a certain period of time the workstation gets removed from the domain automatically. I heard that Vista and server2008 take full advantages of SMB. Much faster file transfers than Server 2003 and XP Pro. I think if you read up on the licensing schemes you should be ok.

I assume and hope this is the appropriate forum for this, even though it's for using WDS to deploy Windows XP SP2.  I installed WDS on one of our W2K3 R2 SP1 servers via the Windows Components window of Add / Remove Programs (I didn't use the downloaded Windows AIK package).  For the most part it seems I got everything setup and working fine.  I used the boot.wim image from the Windows Vista DVD to make my Capture boot image as well as Windows PE PXE boot environment image.  I successfully made my own custom install image and was even able to re-deploy it to the laptop which I made it from. Now enters my problem.  I have another laptop that's a similar model, but not the exact same.  When I go to image it I get this error after it gets into Windows PE:

WdsClient: An error occurred while communicating with the Windows Deployment Services server. Please check to ensure that the server is operational and that the necessary ports are open on the server's firewall.  Server name [wdsserver.domain.com], Server IP address [192.168.1.2].

I fired up the command prompt with shift+F10 and can ping the server just fine.  Also, ipconfig /all shows everything is functioning as it should, so http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923834/en-us doesn't seem relevant to my problem.  I couldn't find any other articles on this issue.  I also have the WDS server setup to accept any client... no client restrictions.I'm stumped as to what to do next.  I thought I had this thing all ironed o... I have a WDS server locally and it works just fine. However, we have several remote locations that are connected through an MPLS. I am able to perform a Network Boot and access the WDS Server. Unfortunately, when I attempt to deploy the image across the MPLS, the installation takes way too long.

I would like to set up a share at each of my remote (MPLS) locations that the images can be pulled from. I want to avoid setting up a WDS Server at each location as it would be a mismanagement of resources for the number of people/PC's at the locations.

Is it possible to set up local shares at the remote locations and configure the WDS Server pull the images from those local shares?

I have a licensing question regarding the deployement of Windows 7.

We are currently purchasing notebooks that have an OEM key for Windows 7 Pro and have been configuring each by hand which can get really annoying. I want to create an image of Windows 7 and use it for deployement however I'm not too sure about the licensing involved.

First off, you cannot image an OEM version and you need an open license version, correct?

Do I need to purchase a VLK license for each notebook that I want to image to? Or can I just purchase 1 open license and image that to multiple computers since the OEM key is in fact for Windows 7 Professional?

A:Image Deployment of Windows 7

I believe you're going to need to look into VLK if you're intending on using the same key & installation across multiple machines. You "may" be able to get away with buying one 7Pro and then inserting the individual OEM key that is on the individual laptop stickers, however I'm not sure on that one so don't quote me there. I'm sure someone else here does know this answer though so sit tight, some one else will surely be able to answer this.

Aside from the licensing issues, once you get the version of Windows that you'll be installing legally with a licensed key, you should look into windows sysprep. It will cut your distribution time down incredibly using this method rather than setting up each machine individually from scratch.

Hi There,

I found this forum thru KariTheFinn's YouTube Videos which are superb! My first post is a problem that hunts me since quite some time now. I startet too more or less ignore it since it was only a problem with one program. But since I switch mail clients it's now also a problem there. But first things first.

I have a Hyper-V Service running on my Windows 10 Machine for toying around. In there I was trying to create my personal perfect Windows 10 Installation with all the Apps, Tools, Settings, etc. I like and want. I did all of this in my created user account Yves. So all the settings from many apps (for example Chrome) are in this user profile. After I was done. I shutdown the Hyper-V Machine Boot up the WindowsPE.iso. And dism the complete machine to a mapped network drive. Than I created a new Hyper-V Machine booted directly into WindowsPE.iso. Diskpartet the complete system like I like. 100MB EFI. 1GB Rescue. 50GB System Partition. Dism the image back to the System Partition and bcdbooted the System Partition. Bootet up and tada System is "almost" like I left it before on the other VM. Only thing missing are for example Chrome extensions and settings. Which I can not figure out why this happens? Newly since I moved from em Client to Outlook 2016. Also Outlook 2016 does not like the dism'ing around. It says .ost file has to be deleted.

Anyone an idea why this is happening and how I can prevent it?

Thanks for your help guys.

Cheers,
Yves

I'm looking for some kind of "official" Microsoft documentation or TechNet article explaining the proper process for injecting Windows Updates / Hotfixes into a Windows WIM image to allow me to deploy a version of windows that already has all (or at least
most) of the current windows updates.
Does anyone know if such a document exists? Or perhaps someone from Microsoft can respond to this post with some well documented steps on how I would accomplish this?
Thanks!

A:Windows Update / Hotfix Injection into Windows 7 WIM image for Deployment

Process
WSUS Offline Tool

Download the WSUS Offline Tool and extract to another working directory, e.g. "C:\wsusoffline"
Run the "UpdateGenerator.exe" tool.
Select the version of Windows you wish to update, e.g. "x64 Global" under the Windows 7 category.
Optionally select to use a WSUS server on your local network with the "WSUS..." button.

Press the "Start" button. A command window will appear displaying the progress of the utility. The updates are downloaded to the "./client/w61-x64/glb" directory within the "wsusoffline"
folder.
The Windows 7 Media

Download the Windows Automated Installation Kit for Windows 7 and
install. This will allow you to obtain the "DISM.exe" command line utility that is needed.
Extract all files from the Windows 7 media. Store these files in a working directory, e.g. "C:\Win7_x64_Ent_Source"
Create a temp directory that will be used to mount the WIM image to in order to manipulate the files, e.g. "C:\Win7_x64_Ent_WIM"
Open an elevated command prompt.
Run the follow command to mount the WIM file:

dism /mount-wim /wimfile:C:\Win7_x64_Ent_Source\sources\install.wim /mountdir:C:\Win7_x64_Ent_WIM /index:1

You can determine the index number of the image you need to mount by running the "dism /get-wiminfo" command.

Hi,
I am having all sorts of trouble imaging a new Dell 5570 laptop with custom Windows 7 SP1 Ent. through SCCM.I have tried Dell support and their assistance so far hasn't been satisfactory unfortunately.

First: I had issues booting the laptop with my boot image, SSD was not recognized. I had to import Samsung NVMe drivers into boot image for the SSD to be recognized and to kick start task sequence.
Now: The task sequence doesn't go through. Immediately after 'Set up Windows and ConfigMgr', the laptop reboots and crashes with the error '0x0000007B'.

I have already tried below with not much success.

Dell Diagnosis says no faults detectedSATA Operation set to AHCI, RAID on in BIOSBoot sequence set to Legacy, UEFIWith and Without 5570 drivers after applying O.SWith and Without KMDF, UMDFDifferent WIM files-one recently updated with most hotfixes, one updated last year, one close to vanilla Windows 7 SP1 Ent.
Any help here is much appreciated please as I have around 20 laptops already procured from Dell and waiting to be imaged before deploying.

Thanks,
Madhusudan

Hi All, new to the forum,

Has anyone had any joy using the DISM image deployment tool,

below is the message i get trying to capture an image

DISM doesn't recognise the command-line option "d:\thinimage.wim"

I've tried the below.

dism /capture-image /capturedir:f:\ /imagefile "d:\thinimage.wim" /name:"MyCompany"

I've checked this over and over and i'm defiantly following the line they require.... any ideas? Thanks.

A:Win 8 Image Deployment

I know nothing about DISM, so please check what I say first...

...but looking at the format of the command line, I wonder if there should be a colon after /imagefile?

so replace
dism /capture-image /capturedir:f:\ /imagefile "d:\thinimage.wim" /name:"MyCompany"

with
dism /capture-image /capturedir:f:\ /imagefile:"d:\thinimage.wim" /name:"MyCompany"

Hi have a query

i want to dpely windows 7 across around 10 PC's but minimise user downtime, as such i intend to install manually using retail versions of the software then update to the specifications i need. all the final workstations will need to be the same.

i have 3 pc's to roll out, then i will drag 3 in, upgrade, redeploy and so on, thus meaning that noone will loose much productivity to downtime.

whats killing me is that after install, which takes around 30 mins including office and other bits of software, the patching and updating of windows on each machine to latest KB updates is taking forever!! so with say 10-15 new pcs all trying to install updates within few hours its going to slow the network to a stop.

is there anyway i can take one of the pc's i have finished, image the updates and software installs then patch them all onto a new clean install of retail windows 7????

i have looked at all sorts of networkable options such as microsoft system essentials or symantec ghost, but none will allow a stand alone image creation off network that i can tell

help!!

thanks in advance for any advice

I work for a large bookstore with a relatively small IT department, and we are looking for a way to image and restore a small number of PCs. Basically, I want to set up a master template PC, build an image of it, then be able to deploy that image over a Microsoft network from a server computer and/or from a bootable CD (pretty standard, I guess).

However, I want to be able to do this without having to install an imaging program on the master PC (preferrably to run the imaging software from a shared drive, because installing the imaging software on the client machines would violate the license agreement) and without booting to DOS from a floppy disk (the server machine doesn't have a floppy drive).

We're considering a few solutions for this: Acronis TrueImage 7, Imagecast 4.6.1, Altiris RapiDeploy, or Norton Ghost 2003. Will any of these solutions perform what we're looking for (I've been through the manuals for each and it seems like they can't add a client agent without booting the client machine into DOS or running the software from the client machine)? Does anyone have any suggestions from personal experience to use these or other products to accomplish this task?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I am having a VERY odd issue with Windows XP Pro and Tablet PC Edition.

I have been following Microsoft's Single-Image Deployment Supplemental Guide which discusses single-image deployment and how to use this process to deploy Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 in your organization while using your existing Windows XP Professional image.

I followed the article to a T and imported all the Tablet PC components in the Sysprep directory and then re-syspreped the box. At first once mini-setup finished the system would lock up on the Windows XP splash screen about the 3rd time the progress bar cycled through. So I went to Safe Mode and everything worked like a charm. So just as a troubleshooting step I tried to use Safe Mode with Networking. That locked up at the splash screen in the same spot which lead me to believe it was a networking issue. So I disabled all listed networking adapters and tried to boot into normal mode.

Once I saw "Applying Computer Settings" I thought all was good. So I waited until I saw the standard "Press Cntrl-Alt + Delete to Login" screen. So I hit cntrl alt delete and nothing happend. So I tried moving the mouse, and to my amazment, the entire computer is hard locked. This is happening everytime I reboot the computer into Normal mode and the login screen appears. So I tried to go back into Safe Mode with Networking to test that theory again. Although I am able to get logged into the system the system actually hard lo... Read more

Nope. Windows sees the hard disk "environment" as not being 100% on par with what it used to be. Plus it doesn't hurt to run it after an image deployment like that anyways

Hello,

I am working on setting up an image deployement solution. The current problem I am having with Acronis Snap Deploy 3.0 is that when I try to deploy an image it deploys normally and Snap Deploy does the extra setup before Windows loads to a logon screen. The problem I am having is after I log in, windows is missing the "Vista" theme and whenever I try to click on anyting (Computer, Documents) It gives me a popup messege that has a title of "Explorer.exe" and in the messege it says "class not registed." I cannot figure out why the image is not working. I am deploying it onto the exact same computer I made the image from. It was a clean install of windows Vista Business.

To make the image I loaded the master computer into the Acronis software using the Acronis PXE server. I then imaged the computer and the image was put directly on the imaging server.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank You

Connected a windows share to a NAS Linux v5 Based Thecus N4100, N5500, N7700, and N8800.

Google Drive reported the directory was not writeable. A quick look and all folders had a black square in read only. Took a look at the security tab and the only full control was for the NAS accounts. All windows account permissions that Google drive relies on were blank and unchangeable. This is by design for Linux NAS permission in Windows. No I cant change everyone to full control..

As google drive has no explicit NAS Linux account the only option was to have the NAS run in public permission mode. Yes google drive now installs.

But it's not a good fix. Acronis True Image Home backup can not log into the NAS. It wants a Linux account to browse despite it being public. But the public NAS has no account! No I can not make a Linux user and get google drive to work.

Someone suggested "this sounds like the old "aligning the Windows and Linux account" problem. As it sounds like a 2 decade old issue I'll keep it short. Why not try the logins aligned. That is if I login on my Windows as Sally, why don't I have a matching Sally account on Linux?"

I can't align the logon as I use an email address for windows account sync. What a shame.

I am trying to set up a MDT Deployment that will install Win 7 and MS Office 2010. With the Win 7 install I am able to have the system ask for the Windows Key after the install has completed. I would like to do the same for MS Office. I am going to be using this deployment tool for every new computer we get going forward and don't want to have to update my deployment every time I run one. I simply would like to deploy the image and then enter the Product key and activate it. Is this possible?

Hi there
If you have access to a Linux system anywhere (including bootable USB live distros) and you want to image your Windows disks / partitions you can use a very simple Linux built in command

assume the Windows disk is mounted as /DEV/SDA and the device you want to copy it to is mounted as /DEV/SDB

Then open a terminal as root / super user / sudo

simply type in DD IF=/DEV/SDA OF=/DEV/SDB

It will do a byte to byte copy of the entire partition. Might take a little while but it's totally Free - and you can let this run while say you are watching TV. A Huge disk copy might take a couple of hours.

Doesn't care whether Disk is GPT / UEFI or what -- any type of partition is handled too = Linux just sees the disk as a collection of BYTES.

IF = Input file, OF = Output file --- don't get them the wrong way round or you'll kill your data !!

There's loads more operands but that's the basic and easiest command. The output device must be at least as large as the input one. - If it is a lot bigger then after you've done your backup you can re-size the partition with GPARTED or whatever to free up disk space.

To restore simply reverse the operands.

(I'd really go for a decent Windows backup solution - but ANY backup is better than none and this one while REALLY BASIC always give an exact copy byte for byte).

As I said -- ANY BACKUP is better than none so if you don't have any decent Windows Backup software this is as good as it gets -- Free macrium needs you to BOOT f... Read more

Please update hijackthis as your using an old version!!

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run ad-aware SE with VX2 add-on cleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy (with updated database) and CWShredder as these programs will clean a lot of the crap out first. All links to programs are in my signature. Ok..on to the log?..

If you have a highspeed connection please Run an online virus scan from TrendMicro Please select the ?autoclean? option when prompted to do so. I think you have a virus dealing with these two files...internat.exe/vcsystem.exe. I will address the removal on one in the fix below.

Open My Computer-->Tools-->Folder Options-->View-->Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files and click YES and then OK..

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Check and fix the following in HijackThis if they still exist (make sure you do not miss an entry)

Hello,
If I have a reference image that I capture through a regular sysprep & capture task sequence, how do I update my deployment task sequence to reflect this updated reference image once it has been captured? I would prefer not to have to recreate the deployment
task sequence as the current one has several customizations that I would have to redo. When I try to change the OS in the "Install Operating System" step in the sequence to point to the updated image, the deployment will fail with a message such
as: Windows could not parse or process the unattend answer file for pass [specialize]
I don't know how to tell if this is a problem with the unattend file itself or having something to do with changing the deploying operating system in the task sequence.

Hi,

Not too sure if I have posted this in the right section, but,

I want to capture still DV images from my camera (not movies) but software that came with the camera no longer works (for some reason). I have a firewire connection with the camcorder.

Can anyone point me in the right direction regards any free software which would allow mw to capture still images from my camcorders memory. I have had a quick search around the interweb but all these DV capture programs only save movies.

What would be my best option.

Thanks,

PS/ Apologies if this is in the wrong section.

Do you mean stills from tape? or stills from a memory card?

BTW, if you go to the manufacturers site you should be able to download any software that came with the cam.

Okay, I am sure that what I wish to do is possible. I just don't have the faintest clue as to how to go about it. I watch DVD's on my PC. (a Dell, with window XP home edition and the Inter-Actual Dvd player). What I would love to be able to do is to pause the DVD playback and capture the screen image as a graphic file. So I can make them my background or things like that.

A friend who knows PCs told me that it is just NOT possible on my machine because Microsoft has designed the operating system not to allow this. However, I found a company that offers a program that is supposed to be able to do what I want. (Herculesoft, the DVDgo Pro). But before I drop $50 on this...

Can I do what I want on my PC? and what do I need to do to be able to do so?

thanks for any advise. I'm about ready to pull my hair out over this.

Hello Melisenda,The following are about Windows Media Player, but they might help. They offer several possible solutions:http://www.quickonlinetips.com/archives/20...s-media-player/http://labnol.blogspot.com/2005/11/capture...om-windows.htmlI'm not sure if the InterActual DVD Player has similar controls. Can you play the DVD using Windows Media Player? The thread in the first link above also mentions VLC Player (from http://www.videolan.org/) as a possible solution for capturing images from DVDs.EDIT: I just noticed after posting this that the VLC Player is also mentioned in "Freeware Replacements For Common Commercial Apps" here at Bleeping Computer.

Hi Folks,

I am looking for a software that will produce automatic image captures from DVD footage, something like a chapter thumbnail...

I do VHS to DVD transfers in house and I want to make DVD covers from my transfered footage's still images, I have already programmed the template I wanted to use using this program called "fotofusion" and now I need to be able to capture some still images from the DVD footage automaticlly. It would also be nice if I can set the intervals of the caption.

Its an on going job and I need to extract about 50 images per DVD, currently I do it manually but it is very time consuming.

Any thoughts ?

Many Thanks

Alright, I have some sort of conflict, that is not listed in device manager, between a HP-PSC500 parallel port printer and a Kodak USB digital Camera. The printer and scanner works fine useing the HP software. The camera won't transfer pictures at all. No errors in device manager, but under the "scanners and cameras" applet, the properties of both the scanner and the camera shows as unavailable or disconnected. It's not a USB problem as all other USB stuff works fine, it's not a IRQ problem, It's not a twain problem, It's some kinda image capture problem.

Anyway, I'd like to delete and reinstall all files and registry settings related to video capture. Also, I'd like to try to find any unused capture drivers installed on the machine and delete them. Is there any way to do this without reinstalling? This machine is used for audio production and has 200+gigs of critical stuff on it. Fixing all the midi apps and sound stuff is a pain on installation.

Thank god this isn't my machine.

I took a job where the previous person is suspected of A LOT of things.

I was able to put aside her computer after copying what files I might need to do the job, and use a different computer. Her computer sits virtually unchanged from the day she was escorted out.

Now I am being pressed to put it back into commission. I don't know if anything on it will be useful for evidence at some date as we investigate what she was doing. Maybe, maybe not.

What's the best way to capture the image, store it and be able to access it again?

I may end up just pulling the drive and stashing it, but I'm wondering what software is best for it.

Hi- Single Site, single domain. I have WDS running on Windows Server 2012 Standard. Have been using WDS for quite a while now without issue. Created a new image from scratch, applied all updates, installed apps.
Ran sysprep (successful) and rebooted to initiate an image capture. Selected the volume, selected the WDS server, and storage group. Ran Net Use to map a network drive to copy the image file to. Capture started and gets to 28% and then stalls. Left it overnight
and still at 28%. Tried it twice with the same results.

What's going on here? Where should I look to find info on what the cause might be?

Hi everyone,

I don't know if I'm in the right section but I been trying to deploy an image to a new model pc which I captured the image from an older model pc used Windows AIK added the chipset drivers offline and did a commit and now I'm trying to deploy this updated image to this new model pc and it doesn't boot into Windows Vista but it will work on the same model pc, althought if I sysprep the image again it will work on the new model, why is that, it's almost seems like the chipset drivers did get installed but then if I sysprep it works. The reason why I'm doing this is because a client has alot of applications and configurations which I want to avoid building her pc from scratch and just capture the image and the chipset drivers offline commit it and then being able to deploy it to this new model pc. It's odd because I'm sure I have done this in the past and for a reason or another it doesn't work.

Thank you for your help.

Mark

A:capture image to re-deploy to a new model pc.

The most common reason for an image to fail after Sysprep has been run is the installation of security software. Many security and anti-malware applications will protect the system files which Sysprep interacts with and the resulting image will fail, you may wish to disable or remove the anti-virus software before running Sysprep.

However, where your image will boot properly on the reference system, I would look first at other drivers beyond the chipset driver which are necessary for boot. Most specifically, I would look at the storage driver, especially if you are receiving a 0x0000007B error on boot. There are instructions available for preparing an existing image for migration to a new storage mode included in this Microsoft Support article.

I think it's 4.3 under Create WinPE Boot Image in the lab where you have to boot the image you created. I can't burn the image to a CD - I think I may have done an error before I did the sysprep where it shuts down your machine. In the middle of the process of the uploading the image captured it tells me "There is not enough space on the disk".
I canceled the process and I can see the xyz.wim file created in the local machine, but no in the WDS server (E:\RemoteInstall).
Obviously I have sufficient space on both, local machine where I am capturing the image and on the WDS server.
Also, both disk drives are NTFS without quota allocation.
Anyone has an idea of how to solve it¿?
I have read some information in Internet, but with no succesful.

You have to create an small (10GB) partition in the client machine, and then in the wizard you need to specify that you want to create the .wim there.
It works like a charm.

Since the most recent update of the Sprout Workspace I have been unable to capture any images or use the document capture. I was able to roll back the updates two days ago and the system worked fine. When I started the computer the next day the update went in again automatically and now rolling back to the old Workspace is no longer an option when I look at the recovery points.  When I try to capture an image I get the following error message: "Request to capture Moment failed with new HPPC_RESULT value as [1.0.d.a0088888] (HPPC_ERROR_EMPTY) If I hit OK and close Sprout and then wait a little the light above flashes the way it should to take an image about 30 seconds to a minute after I tried to actually get an image leading me to believe there is some kind of excessive delay in image capture which is the reason there is no moment captured when the system is looking for it. I believe you have a big problem with your most recent update that is causing. I use this Sprout computer with my students and I need the capability to scan with this ASAP. Right not it is just another computer rather than the all in one device it was bought to be, and that is disappointing.

Many years ago I had a webcam and bought software that allowed me to automatically capture an image every so often and upload it to a website. Now I have Microsoft Studio webcam and it does not come with any software that I can set up to automatically capture images and upload them to the website.

I know there is software out there that can do this and I have been searching the Internet to find it. So far I have had to restore my system three times. It seems that the software I find comes with a bunch of crap software that even if you tell it NOT to install, the crap software gets installed too. I figure that any software that comes with crap is crap by association; I don't even bother looking at the webcam software, I go straight to restore and get rid of everything.

I am hoping that someone here can provide me with a link to good webcam software. I might even consider buying another webcam if it came with the software.

A:Need webcam software to capture image and post to website

You can use reputable software like virtualdub (Welcome to virtualdub.org! - virtualdub.org), vlc (https://www.videolan.org/vlc/) or even ffmpeg (FFmpeg) to capture snapshots from your webcam. This can be done via command line.

For VLC, the command line should look like :

Code:
vlc --dshow-vdev="Monitor Webcam" --dshow-size=640x480 -V dummy --intf=dummy --dummy-quiet --video-filter=scene --no-audio --scene-path=D:\temp --scene-format=jpeg --scene-prefix=snap --scene-replace --run-time=1 --scene-ratio=24 "dshow://" vlc://quit

This captures 1 second and saves it as jpg images on D:\temp
More help on command line options : http://wiki.videolan.org/VLC_command-line_help

For Virtualdub (much easier) :

Code:
vdub /capture /capdevice Monitor Webcam /capfile D:\temp\video.avi /capstart 2s /x

Same as above but saves it as an avi video file.

For ffpmeg :

Code:
ffmpeg -f dshow -i video="Monitor Webcam" -c copy raw.avi \-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -t 1 -crf 25 D:\temp\video.mp4

This saves as a mp4 video file (h264 format)

Code:
ffmpeg -f dshow -i video="Monitor Webcam" -t 1 ?r 25 D:\temp\image%d.jpg

This saves as jpeg images.
More info here : http://sonnati.wordpress.com/2011/08...ing-?-part-ii/

Replace Monitor Webcam with the correct name for your webcam as seen by direct show. This can be done via ffmpeg too :

Code:
ffmpeg -list_devices true -f dshow -i dummy

Doubtlessly you will be familiar with tools such as ISO Buster for Windows which allow you to open an ISO file without having to burn it to CD to have a little lookie at its contents....

However, in Linux we have this tech built in. And ISO image can be mounted just like any device or file system, and here is how...

Create a mount point for the ISO:

BASH# mkdir /mnt/iso

Now mount the ISO in the mount point with the following command:

BASH# mount myiso.iso /mnt/iso/ -t iso9660 -o ro,loop=/dev/loop0

Where myiso.iso is your ISO file.

What I haven't tried yet is omitting the ro (read only) option, so that it might be possible to make changes to the ISO before finally burning, not sure if this works (will check) but the command would probably look like this:

BASH# mount myiso.iso /mnt/iso/ -t iso9660 -o loop=/dev/loop0

Have fun!

A:How to mount an ISO image in Linux

If one wants to avoid writing, -t iso9660 can be skipped since it's the default. -o ro is quite useful, it's not always wise writing to images. Keep those tips coming!

Goal: Dual boot Windows 7 and Linux and have an NTFS partition for both OS.

Problem: When creating Logical Partitions with any Linux partition tool(Gparted, cfdisk) the Linux swap and ext 4 partitions shows up on Windows 7 as primary partitions outside of the Extended partition while the NTFS partition shows up inside the Extended partition as logical drive. Disk management shows 5 primary partitions and 1 logical drive inside an extended partition.(As seen in Disk1.jpg attachment) I'm using MBR.(not UEFI)

I can create the partitions in Windows 7 disk management and choose not to format the two logical partitions used for Linux. I can then use the mkswap and mkfs.ext4 command to format the partitions.(See Disk2.jpg attachment)

Questions:
Why is Windows 7 disk management not showing my partitions correctly when I use a Linux tool to partition the disk? Will this cause any problems with Windows 7? I'm afraid of making Windows 7 unbootable.(although it booted just fine I do plan on using EasyBCD to add an entry to load the grub bootloader for Linux)

If I partition my disk with Windows 7 disk management(as seen in Disk2.jpg) will that cause any problems for Linux?

What is the recommended way to handle this? What are the downsides to each way?

Note: I'm a bit of a linux noob.

I have enabled legacy boot and disabled secure boot in BIOS then saved and rebooted, and also upgraded to latest BIOS version F.29, then hit ESC -> F9 on boot to select CD-ROM, where I get "selected image did not authenticate. Hit <Enter> to continue". This is a known-good Debian Jessie production x64 install DVD used on lots of boxes successfully. I have also tried an external USB CD-ROM, with the same result. My original and fully patched and updated Windows 10 OS still boots, but I need Linux on this box. I want to use EasyBCD to manage the boot process, but I still need to get the CD to boot to install on a new partition I've created after resizing my primary Windows NTFS partition.

Hi there

I usually run a LINUX HOST for testing Windows VM's - but I need to test some new releases of various Linux distros so I've created some VM's --easy enough and running them on a Windows Host.

However I can't attach a USB drive with a Linux file system (XFS) to the VM as the Windows HOST rejects the HDD wanting me to format it !!. There's 2.7 TB of media files on it - I want to test running media server in a VM.

Anybody know how to bypass the Windows nag prompt about the HDD and be able to attach it direct to the VM.

(The other way round is no problem -- never a problem loading NTFS HDD's on to Linux machines -- however the NTFS file system is SLOW compared with XFS -- on USB3 device on Native windows transfer rate of 1 TB of files from fast NTFS HDD to NTFS USB3 device is max 82 Mib/s - average for whole transfer. On same machine with Native Linux and XFS to XFS (using same HDD's and USB 3 port avg speed is 350 mib/s !! -- HUGE difference !!!).

Note I have to have a Windows Host for this --I know I could run Linux VM's from a Linux Host but in this case I do have to use a Windows Host as that will be the destination system at the end of testing.

BTW I'm running VMWARE workstation 12.1 on W10 Pro Host.

So if now I will install linux i will delete all files from SSD.
Maybe in futture i would like to use windows again, can I revert back to original state using this USB stick ?

If I would install this linux, what happens with toshiba tools accessed from BIOS/UEFI ?

From where I can get windows CDkey ?

Thanks for help !

BTW: great laptop !

Yes, recovery would set the notebook back to factory settings.

If I would install this Linux, what happens with Toshiba tools accessed from BIOS/UEFI?

I’m afraid I’m not quite sure what you mean exactly with Toshiba tools accessed from BIOS…

Toshiba tools don’t support Linux… you can install Linux but Toshiba software would not run. But you can still access the BIOS press F2 button while powering On the unit

I started up my XP system yesterday am and when windows tried to start up the screen asking if I want to go to safe mode appeared. I clicked 'start normally' and a box appeared with the following:

"services.exe bad image application or dll c:\windows\system32\msvcp60.dll is not valid
windows image"

I then pressed OK and the screen went black with the exception of the cursor. I moved it around clicking to see if start or anything were 'hidden' under the black screen, but to no avail. I turned off the computer, clicked on safe mode and the same thing happened.

I am not very savvy with these things, so I don't know how to get the windows system to startup.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Welcome to TSG...Please post some system specs in your next reply.

You'll need your Windows XP cd to boot to the recovery console.
Boot the machine, and at the first sign of life, follow the prompt to enter Setup or BIOS. If might be the del key, the F1 key, or some other depending on the make and model.
Change the First Boot Device to CD-ROM.
Save changes and exit the BIOS-often the F10 key will do that-read the key on the screen.
Insert the Windows CD, and press any key to boot from CD. I like the space bar.
At the first prompt after examining hardware, press R to enter the recovery console.
Choose the Windows installation to log onto from the list-usually 1.
Enter the Administrator Password if you've set one-otherwise, just press enter.
At the c:\Windows> prompt, type chkdksk /r and press the enter key. The scan and fix may take awhile-be patient and let it finish.
When the scan is finished, type exit and press enter. Remove the CD, and don't press a key if prompted.

Tell us how that goes...

Hello!
This is my first post here so I'm hoping I'll include all the relevant information. Thanks in advance for your help.

Today I started my computer and a series of error messages started popping up, one after another once I got to the desktop. Each one was titled "programname".exe - Bad Image. My only option was to click OK, so I clicked it until they no longer popped up (about 15 times). Each error message had a different name of a program that usually starts on startup. I went ahead and ran AVG 8.0 and there was no problems so I decided to restart my computer at this point.

After the restart, I was brought to a black screen with white text:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully.

It then asks me to chose to start it in safe mode, last known good configuration, and a few other options. Unfortunately for me, I cannot use my mouse or keyboard so I cannot chose any of the other options. There is a countdown and windows supposedly starts. I get the initial Windows logo screen with the loading bar, but before I get to the desktop another error message pops up:

services.exe - Bad Image
The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\lejivaya.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

There is a button labeled OK to click but, as I said earlier, I cannot use my mouse or keyboard (both wireless). I went and found my old wired mouse and keyboard, plugged them in, restarted... Read more

Please check this against your installation diskette.' I clicked on OK and it then took approx 45 minutes to get to my desktop and I then had no access to the Internet. no printer etc. I could access Word and Excel etc but it took approx 4 minutes to open a file.
I tried opening in Safe Mode and exactly the same thing happened.

I had no Internet access so could not download DDS or GMER.

I was advised to save them from another computer but ..........3 days ago I booted up and I just got a black screen, no BIOS details, no beeps - just a black screen

I was not given an XP disk when I bought the PC.

I have SUSE 9.3 Installed on a 19GB partition of a 40GB hard drive. I heard that it is possible to dual boot with Windows with Linux being the first installed OS, but it's complicated. Can anyone tell me if I can pull this off without having to make Windows the first installed OS? Here is how I have my partitions:
hda1=1GB [swap]
hda2=17.8 / [root]

A:Linux/Windows dualboot machine with Linux first?

The easiest way: Make hda1 bigger and install Windows there.

You will have to restore GRUB later using the SuSE CD and also create the GRUB menu entry for WIndows..

Hello Mika,

Sorry, but the backup image that Vista creates is only of the Vista partition or drive. Ubuntu will not be backed up by Vista.

You should be able to use the free program Macrium Reflect to create a back up image of both partitions though.

If you need to read an NTFS mounted drive in that machine then you'll need to add kernel support for NTFS. Try looking http://www.linux-ntfs.org/ for that info. If you just want to hit shares then just mount them via smb.

Hi,
I consider this issue can be caused if the driver you added into boot image fail to install.

Please try the suggestions in this article:

i know the internet is full of guides and tutorials but i haven't got what i'm looking for.
My situation is as follows:
Our corporation buys oem licensed windows 7 computers from our suppliers.
we would like to create an image with icd , without overwriting the product keys (since we don't buy volume keys, paying 2 times seems a little stupid aswell). We would like the icd image to join the domain under a variable name (something like desktop01
- desktop02 etc ...).Also it should be able to enable the built in local administrator and disable any other local user besides domain users.

within this icd image i would like to add other applications aswell (symantec antivirus, citrix, adobe reader, office365, etc...).
Is this possible ? if so could anyone guide me to a fairly easy guide where i can do all this stuff?

I have staged a Windows 7 pro with  SP1 computer as a reference machine. Run sysprep with OOBE and Generalize. Captured the image and imported it to MDT as a custom image file. It work almost the time. But I have randomly two problems.
1. After the completion of the OS deployment with 0 errors. The computer restart, but it hangs at a black screen with the mouse cursor.
2. Some computers have the same problem as in 1 but after sveral days of use. (3 to 4)
Please note that we have in the out of the box drivers several models of DEll laptops.
Is someone out there that knows what could be the cause of these issues?
Thank you in advance.
