A: Y510p - problem starting laptop

Hi dudescuman ,

Greetings.

Take the opportunity to back up anything that you would need from the machine.
Running lenovo diagnostics with temperature checker would help isolate points of failure.

BIOS and Lenovo logo should still appear even without a harddrive .
How is the power LED and Battery LED status (page29) ?
Would pressing the caps and num lock on / off show any response from the leds?

Update us how it goes.

Regards

So, I just noticed this and it has been going on for quite a while I think, the fan on the right side of my laptop is not working. My laptop is an ideapad y510p. The fan not working causes my gpu to go upwards of 75c and I have no clue how to cool it down or make the fan even work in the first place. Any help would be appreciated

Hello, bear with me because it is quite a long confusing story. I have recently send the y510p away to get the screen repaired. Because I needed something to work with meanwhile I took the SSD from y510p and put this in an older laptop with a clean install of windows10. In the y510p I put an old HDD with Elementary OS installed on it. Today I received the y510p and turned it on, the screen worked perfectly and I could use the Elementary OS installed on the HDD. I then took the HDD out again and put the SSD in, I was planning to do a clean install on it again but it still had windows 10 installed from the older laptop.I put everything back together and powerd it on, the screen lights up but remains black.I hooked up an external monitor through vga and saw that the windows 10 had booted from the older laptop. When I try to get in the bios (I think it's F2) both monitors remain black. I have the feeling it goes to the bios, but cant display it on the monitor? (I cant find a way to display the bios on the external monitor.)Could it be that the motherboard doesnt recognize the new screen? At the moment the only way to get any visual on the main monitor is to boot Elementary OS from the old HDD. Please help for I have no other ideas. JTADDED: I can currently use the SSD with w10 on the y510p through the external monitor. But I would like to do a clean install and ofcourse use the main monitor aswell(The main monitor does not appear i... Read more

Hi Adil,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

Kindly perform Power Drain and set BIOS default:
Try turning off and removing the battery first. With adapter charger unplug, press Power button for 15seconds to drain power inside.  Plug in adapter charger and press Novo button instead of the power key to turn it on for the Novo Menu  Choose BIOS setting  On Exit tab , load optimal default then Y then place battery back before save changes and exit.

Let us know how you get on.

So this morning I woke up like usual and start my laptop up. It took a while like usual to boot up then it went straight to the your computer needs restarting blue screen and I thought hmmm this happened a few times and usually gets fixed. This time it went not to the home lock screen but the trouble shooting blue screen after picking my language and type of keyboard. Then it goes to two options "advance options" or "shutdown" I go to advance settings then there were 3 more options. Refresh settings, reset settings or advance options so I chose refresh cause I didn't want my files to get erased since I haven't backed them up yet. I click refresh and a message says that my drive where Windows is installed is locked. And it told me to unlock it and try again. So how do I access this? I forced shutdown but the same thing happens for a few times. Now I'm worried about this problem. Can anyone help me before I actually have to reset my laptop?

If your laptop doesn't start in any respect.1st of all check the AC adapter. If there is no video on the screen.during this situation check the laptop with an external monitor. If the external screen works fine but there's no video on the laptop LCD, most likely there is a problem within the laptop display assembly.

not good news - sorry.
These symptoms usually mean that the power controller unit has or is failing. The unit should run without the battery installed - if not I would take it to a tecchy shop. If you are in the UK I can point you in the right direction!

My Lenovo IdeaPad y510p displays nothing but a blank black screen when the power button is pressed, the keyboard lights up and the fan spins but no part of the computer seems to boot at all. I have tried removing all power supplies/cables and flushing the battery by holding the power button for 15 seconds, as well as using the NOVO button on the side. The NOVO button does exactly the same thing as the power button. Interestingly the laptop's screen doesn't even appear to turn on, let alone display anything. I'm at a loss for what to do with this as I'm not confident the warranty is still active (the laptop is at least three years old).  Thanks for any help

Hello, I have a Y510P notebook and I am having some problems with it. Once I was playing on this laptop and it suddenly it turned off. The power cord would make a weird noise and it wouldn't turn on. After a while it started to work normally. It was probably a high voltage spike in my house, since we already lost a cellphone. After that I notice that the laptop would turn off, as soon as I plugged the power cord. I ordered a new power cord and battery, but this issue is still happening. Anyone has an idea? Thank you!

A:Plugging power cord turns laptop off (Y510P)

Hi Tiagoramosleite,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You can initially start isolating the issue using the power checkout guideline (page 21).
Try to notice anything on the DC port like bent pin , unusual appearance / marks or smell of burnt .

Would any led status light (page30) still be lit when plugged in.

It would be best to have it further checked for further isolation for dc in port issue against failure on the systemboard itself with nearest service center or call in technical support for further recommendation.

Update us how it works best for you.

Problem(s):
· Laptop hangs and does NOT boot-up on startup:

I get to the ….. Starting Windows, and then the laptop just freezes without proceeding further.
I have waited for almost 20 minutes to see if the boot up progresses beyond this stage but have never been successful.
· I then power down the machine and then attempt to reboot by manually turning on the laptop. Typically laptop does not respond; it just shuts down again.
It normally takes me about 10 attempts before I can progress beyond this point.
· Once it gets beyond this point, it does a “Start-up” repair and offers to “Restore” to a previous state. I am then able to successfully get to the login window (and user accounts) after this restore stage is completed. Clicking on the “details link” during the restore stage yields the following message at the end of the file:
“ Unspecified change in system configuration port may have cause the problem”
Steps that I have undertaken to fix this:,
(1) Working with Dell Technical Support but have been unsuccessful to date. Things that they have tried:
-- replaced memory
-- replaced motherboard twice
-- replaced HD
-- reinstalled OS
(2) I have tried the following:
-- Uploaded BIOS from A01 to A05
-- Run all diagnostic tests available to me (F12 on start-up)
-- Checked Dell User Forums for hints
-- Checked Windows 7 forums
I am at a loss and would appreciate any guidance that you can provide.
Thanks in advance.

I am under the impression your Laptop is still under warranty, I would just tell Dell that you want a complete replacement, back up whatever files you can first and then ship them your faulty laptop.

This morning I turned off my laptop. It started to run slow and I could only turn it off manually.

Big mistake.

When I turn it on the Dell boot screen loads, but when it should be loading Windows there's just a blank black screen. I can still access the setup and boot menus. I was wondering if i could use these to start it in safe mode or to instruct a system restore.

Any info or help is extremely appreciated. I really need my laptop to work.

Laptop Lenovo G585 2181
OS Windows 8 Upgraded to 8.1
Symptoms;
When the machine is powered on all that appears on the screen is the Levono splash screen and a dotted circle going round and round for about an hour. Eventually a blue screen with an error message appears “Could not access a component …” or words to that effect. Insert USB or Media. Which I do not have and consequently cannot start in Safe Mode as I cannot get to msconfig!
It gives a choice to
Press Enter to try again which just repeats the same splash screen all over again.
Press F8 which just repeats the same splash screen all over again.
Press ESC to enter Setup Utility
The only thing I have been able to do is enter InsydeH20 Setup Utility where the boot sequence is BOOT Mode [UEF I]
USB Boot [Enabled]
Any help with this would be most welcome!

A:Serious problem with starting Levono G585 Win 8.1 laptop!

When Windows 8 shuts down it does not really shut down like Windows 7. It a hybrid shutdown in order to create a faster boot. See if the following works for you.

Hold the Power Button for 5 seconds or until the computer completely shuts off.
Press the Power Button to turn the computer on.
As soon as you see the rotating loading circle, press and hold the Power Button until the computer shuts off.
Repeat this process 2 or 3 times until you see the Preparing Automatic Repair screen.
By powering on and off you might be able to get to the Automatic Repair screen.

Hey folks I have an old laptop, it is 4.5 years old and has basically never let me down, we had a power outage about two weeks ago and I had some trouble restarting it up, I tried all kinds of F key combinations and such, but to no avail.
What happens is when I push the power button on the unit I can hear the fan come on for about 5 seconds and then it shuts off, but I can see the power light is on and I can hear noises coming from the HD, so I know its doing something, plust the screen stays blank. I messed with it for about half a day and finally just gave up on it and just figured to let it do its own thing and so I just pushed the power button and and set it aside. about an hour and a half later I open the laptop up and Voila! its working and booted up, works beautifully as well.
So I decide to see if the issues has been resolved and shut it down using Windows, I go to push the button again, and same thing....takes another hour and a half to start up.
The nest thing I try is to do a restart using windows, and it restarts beautifully, it just wont restart from a complete shutdown......
So, I figure Heck its working fine once the hour and a half is over, I have been using it for two weeks now without any issues whatsoever, just that I havent completely shut it down during that time.
Now that I have a little time on my hands I decided to see if I can trouble shoot it, does anyone here have any ideas?

Everything that can be done is here for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start .

Use the Win7 disk provided to run a few Startup Repairs to see if it finds anything. If not then you can continue with the steps to try to repair it, or rescue any files needed to run HP System Recovery or do the vastly superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 since you need to make the disk for repairs anyway.

Hi all,

Last night, my keyboard suddenly decided it didn't want to work. The following keys rarely work (occasionally after hitting them a gazillion times): 0 (wow it worked just now), p (using on screen keyboard, now 0 is not working so I need onscreen to close these parentheses), colon/semicolon key, and slash/question mark key.

I really hoe this is not a hardware issue as this comuter isnt even 2 years old yet, and having a functioning keyboard is kind of essential. Esecially when some of the affected keys are in your assword... Not sure if the 4 affected keys are connected hysically and thats why theyre acting u together, or if this could have something to do with the fact that the issues arose immediately after some Windows udates.

I would immensely areciate any hel ! Thank you!

A:y510p - keyboard problem

Hi Imjustaguy ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Better to isolate hardware issue from software is to make the computer boot on a rescue media and try typing from it . Using an external USB keyboard and onscreen keyboard further isolate probability of a bad keyboard specially if same thing fails in BIOS (like test typing the affected letter in security password  but NOT to save it , for testing only) .

Update us how it goes.

Hi all, I have some problems with my Y510P, hope you guys can help me and pointing me in the right direction. A while back in February I decided to do a clean install of Windows 10 on my laptop. This was due to too much stuff on my PC and sometimes I would get random crashes (freezing at login-in screen from sleep, was the most common). Totally clean (no factory image reset (although I still have to partition) from USB disk created with Microsoft software). After that I installed the drivers, everything was working fine. When I put in the ultrabay GT755M, nVidia Geforce Centre could see two cards. Although I had actually no idea if the ultrabay card actually worked, in some games the air from that vent did get hottor.  Now the problems start:Yesterday I booted up my laptop, took some more time than usual. At login-screen I immediately noticed that the resolution had changed. I thought that was quite strange, it became even more strange when I got to the desktop. Strange artifacts would appear. So I opened Device Management in the configuration panel and it showed the 2 GT755M cards, one had a exclemation mark. It says: "this device has been stopped, problems have been reported, code 43". The Nvidia control panel didn't open and gave the message: "no display connected" which was quite strange, as my screen is still functioning. Also the sleep option disappeared from the start menu, I tried rebooting, didn't work.  After that I pulled out the ultrabay c... Read more

A:Y510P - video card problem

The main problem I would like to find out: is it software or hardware related? In the first case I can of course go back to the clean install of Windows 10 from 2 months ago or go back to Windows 8 (or 8.1) using the recovery partition. But if it is hardware related, that's useless. Anyway to find out?

I just want to comment on this - because I'm having the same issue.  I've used the laptop for a number of months without crashing issues, and it seems to have cropped up pretty recently.

I think it might have something to do with the driver version?  It also only seems to happen with certain games.  In particular, War Thunder and GTA4.  I play Dota 2 quite a bit and don't seem to have any problems at all.

Hi,I have a problem when playing any games with SLI enabled. Games crashes at random times, sometimes even after ~5mins. So at that specific time the screen goes black and the game minimizes (or I try to minimize it by myself). After that the message pops out saying "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered". I have latest Nvidia drivers (v344.11). I'm running Windows 8.1 x64. The problem occured with any version of display drivers I've installed so far.

Hello, I have been using a Lenovo Y510p since the beginning of 2014. It worked perfecly fine till a couple of weeks ago when it suddently turned-off while I was watching a video. From then onwards, it wouldn't start. Novo button or power cycling wouldn't help either. Since it is out of warranty, I took it to Geeksquad to see if they can diagonize the issue quickly but I was said the problem could be deep rooted and it needed thorough trouble shooting. I came home and started disassembling the unit part by part (Take out Hard Disk, Optical Drive, RAM, Wifi Card etc) to see if I could isolate the problem but the laptop simply wouldn't turn on. Suspecting that the mother board could be the problem, I purchased an used motherboard on ebay and swapped the existing one with this and assembled all the components back to their place. This time, when I power on, the keyboard would glow and I can see the heat dissipating fan spinning but it would spin for like 3-4 seconds and then it would stop and the laptop would power off. Then the laptop would start again, the fan starts spinning and stops after 4 seconds and this enters into a loop. All this while, the screen is totally black and doesn't display a thing. F9 or any other buttons are of no use. Novo button is of no use either. The laptop enters into the same loop with Novo button too. Would this mean that my CPU has given up on me? I request your kind help! Thanks,Shyam

Hello there everyone,I am experiencing a strange problem with my y510p. I can properly connect to the internet via wifi, I have sorted out a few config problems which prevented me from connecting, but recently I am getting worried by the network card's behavior. I have recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 (I don't think that's the cause of my issue, but just in case). I noticed that my throughput was, according to Intel's PROSet Wireless WiFi Connection Utility, of about 130 mbps on wireless-n, at about 1 meter away (seriously) from the modem, which is clearly able to do high-speed 802.11n, because the model is kind of new. This modem came from the ISP with two different SSID-s active, and it's able to do 4, so I thought that I could merge the two active networks (set the same SSID and settings on both). Then I set 3 SSID-s active (all identical), then 4, then just 1, and I kept testing this way to see if I could get 270mbps. Not a chance, it stayed at 130. Eventually I found the solution. The system upgrade had set the network adapter settings back to 20mhz only, so I set it back to auto and I started to get 270mbps (intermittent speed) again. But... that didn't sort everything out. I was running an Ookla Speed Test and getting normal speeds when I noticed a slight clicking noise coming from the laptop. And it was absolutely NOT the hard disk. I could hear the hard disk making its usual sounds, and the other noise came from another side of the computer. The noise stopped wh... Read more

hi M B.,

Welcome to the Forums.

That's indeed odd if the clicking noise is comming from the wireless card. One thing that you can try is to re-seat the wireless antenna cables (see page 42 of the hardware maintenance manual).

As for the hard drive, to ensure that it's not the one that's making the clicking noise, try to disable the wireless connection run a diagnostic on the drive (i.e. via HD Tune) or put a load on it (i.e. via CrystalDiskmark) and observe.

This laptop has been owned for a few years, I'm not quite sure how many since it isn't mine. My phone was propped next to the laptop and fell on it, and the screen when dark. Tried restarting it but the screen still didn't work, this went on for around a day. Eventually when I tried to restart it, the laptop would begin to boot but shut down two or three seconds into a power up. Tried a hard reset, but it did nothing. After the hard reset the computer started, but froze on the Windows start up screen. Afterwards it still quit booting after two or three seconds. Stayed away from it for a week or so trying to figure out what was wrong with it/where I could get help. Came back to it today to try and it turned on again, but this time it stopped on the initial dark screen and now it is a black screen with green lines all around it and some blue lines. Do I need to take this laptop to a nearby technician or is all hope lost for it?

Each time I start my laptop, its loaded programs appear in the systray. If I start the computer later on, it starts with a different list of startup programs. It seems that there is an "A"-list of programs it starts with, and then a "B"-list of programs. I'm not aware of a "C"-list! It seems to alternate between these two configurations. Hi all,

During reassembling my Inspiron 9300 (to upgrade the cpu) I did something wrong and now the laptop refuses to turn on. Instead of normal booting when I get the "power on" pressed the power led starts blinking frequently (2.5 blinks a second). Nothing more happens (fans, hard dirive, etc. don't start).

try putting in the old cpu see if it works then

1- while the system is starting tap the F8 key and check if can boot the system is "Safe mode with networking"
2- Check if there are any pending updates on the system
3- Check in advanced boot options to repair the system
4- Factory reset ( data back up )
5- Clean installation
Kindly let us know if this help ,also provide us with the service tag and email address via private message .

I was on my computer this morning and bumped into it causing it to go into hybernation. Upon waking it up, I logged back in and contuined to look around online. That is untill it shut down out of the blue. I pushed the button and restarted it, logging back in. The wallpaper came up as well as the icons, but then the laptop shut down again out of the blue. I went to turn it on a third time and it didn't even start. The battery was indicated as being charged to about 67%. Is it dead? Well, I know it's dead, but do you think it's perminatly dead?

I have a Compaq Presario f500 which when I press the start button the lights come on for about a second but nothing happens. No fans.. nothing.. The power seems fine with the battery apparently fully charged. Tried removing memory, hard drive but still nothing. anyone any ideas. I'm presuming it may be the motherboard unless someone thinks of something else.???

A:Laptop not starting..

Try to remove the battery and use only the AC adapter to turn on your laptop, if it still does not turn on it is possible that you need to send it for repair and have the motherboard checked.

See if you can boot into Safe Mode. Windows Explorer will tell you if HDD is recognized. Try a System Restore prior to problem date.

hey guys! I tried to start my laptop yesterday and i got a couple messeges that i have not gotten before. the first one says:

We applogize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

If you computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders choose last known good configuration to revert to the most recent setting that worked.

if a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or rest button was pressed, or if you're not sure what caused the problem, choose start windows normally.

Safe Mode
Safe mode with networking
Safe mode with command prompt
Last known good configuration
start windows normally

I have choosen each of the follwing choices and each one result with the following messege:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Unmountable_Boot_Volume

If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properally installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacture for any windows updates you may need.

I was trying to fix one of my co-workers laptop that will not start. It says "Windows did not successfully start" and gives me to run in: safe mode, normal, or last working settings. Safe mode blue screens the computer and restarts it. The other two just bring it to the loading windows XP screen and stay loading with no progress. I tried to reinstall windows and repair it, but on both of the choices it just freezes setup. I could really use some help.

A:Laptop not starting

Write down the blue screen error code and reply back with it. BSOD is usually a hardware error, like memory. I would try to reseat your memory modules or try booting up with only one at a time. you can download memtester86 to check for memory errors.

My laptop has become infected! Either from a website or from a torrent I downloaded.Initially a ballon popped up saying the CPU memory was being overused, suggesting I scan for malware. I tried to run SUPERAntiSpyware but after detecting some Trojans and malware when it tried to delete/fix the threats it would freeze.I then re-started the laptop and immediately the internet stopped working, I couldn't access any webpages. I then re-started it again and a message box titled "Error" came up saying the "File is incomplete or corrupt". I pressed on ok and then the screen went blue with a load of txt and before I could read it automatically the laptop re-started itself.I've tried pressing F8 during the start process, I can't get it to start in safe mode, it takes ages to load and then the laptop re-starts. I selected the option that states not to re-start if there is a system failure. After loading up, the same error message came up, and then the blue screen - this time I was able to read it:It states that the system needs to re-start because:"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer"DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUALIt then states to re-start in Safe mode totry and uninstall the cause of the problem, but I can't do that. It also states some code that someone maybe able to decipher:*** STOP: 0x000000D1 (0xE1C08000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000. 0xAAF5ACC6)Beginning dump of physical memoryPhy... Read more

I am no expert, but I have an HP laptop, Envy 15, and I've had plenty of experience of it not booting up. Curiously I came to this forum to look for an answer to a similar question. However, when it won't boot I do a 'hard reset', and it usually boots up next time. Have you tried a hard reset? If not, or if you don't know how: remove the battery, disconnect the power, and everything else, USB drives, etc. Then hold the power button down for 20 - 30 seconds. Install the battery, reconnect the power lead and try to boot. For me this works, or has done so far, but why it should be necessary I do not know, haven't seen it on any other brand of laptop. And they call it an "Envy"? Yeah...right! Hope it works for you, David

Hi, my laptop displays vertical lines after startup then shuts down & repeats the cycle. I think it is related to my Nividia graphics driver, but not sure. What I have tried is;
1. A full system restore to factory condition, recovered from the backup partition - this worked until I downloaded updates from HP, Windows & a Java update, then it went back to above problem.
2. Then tried system restore several times & each time this works again until updates are installed.
3. Went to Nividia website to download latest driver - this did not work. Rolled back the driver but this did not work either.
Only way I could start the pc was by pressing F8 on startup & going into safe mode with networking. When I did this the resolution was much larger than normal.
Latest problem however is, now it will not start at all, screen stays blank. I do not have recovery discs.
System is: HP Pavillion DV9500 notebook, on Windows Vista Home Premium.
Any help much appreciated, Trevor.

A:Laptop not starting

The much larger than normal appearance of Windows in Safe Mode is quite normal -- it's not a problem.
It does that because in Safe Mode (or Safe Mode with Networking) Windows doesn't load any third party drivers (including the graphics driver).
It loads the default Windows graphic driver instead, which has a fixed low resolution and low colour-depth. It just lets you get Windows started so you can remove a corrupted, buggy, or conflicting third-party driver on those occasions when normal Windows won't start because of a driver problem.

I would restore using the HP factory recovery partition again but do not update the graphics driver from HP or from anywhere else.

Hi, I'm new here and hoping for some help. Hopefully this is the correct place.

I think I may have accidently downloaded a virus which in turn gave my computer the blue screen of death and then completly shut off.

I turned my computer back on and the bios came up as usual but the screen then went blank with only the flashing line on the top left corner and no buttons worked except the power button which had immediate reaction.

I turned it back on again and tried F2, F8 and F12 to try and put in into safe mode but only F2 worked for the system set-up.

The only information I can give is that the error on the BSoD was an Internal Kernal error (wasn't able to see the code in time) and that I'm using a mid-range laptop with Windows XP.

I'm seriously stumped, I've tried safe-mode but my F8 key isn't responding, A boot-able virus checker but all the ones I have tried don't seem to come up and I really don't want to consider formatting.

Thanks in advance,
Gaz.

Hi all,

Today, I completely ruined my day by opening a virus from a download. At least that's what I think. The download came from usenet, and was posted by Yenc-pp-a&a, in case someone might be familiar with him/her.

At first I tried installing the programme yesterday, whilst I did not have an internet connection. This did not work. This morning I tried to again, whilst being online. About a minute after, my computer shut down and rebooted. Unfortunately, the reboot couldn't start windows. I can access a command prompt from the recovery on my x drive, but that's about it. Recovery itself is not available either.

Subsequently, I brought my computer to a support shop. They tried to access the hard disk, first of all to try to save my data. When that did not work, they tried to format the disk and reinstall windows. They were unsuccessful, as there is no way for them to access the disk. The disk itself is running, and when plugging it in to another computer, windows plays a sounds indicating something has just been connected.

Is there anyone that knows what to do?

I can't access my pc, so the specs I can't give you. It's an HP Pavilion DV6-3137ED XD492EA, with windows 7 home premium

Try booting into safe mode. When you turn the power on, immediately start gently tapping the F8 key. This should open the safe mode (black screen with white lettering). Use the arrow keys to move up to "last known good configuration" option, click enter. Let the computer do it's thing..

Hello, My HP dv6700 laptop is not starting after I replaced thermal paste and put in new fan. I removed old thermal paste by using nail polish remover. Unusual, how/why did you get into its heatsink and cpu, the nail polisher remover is unlikely to have done any damage,t oo much thermal paste can cause overheating issues but this shudnt stop it booting straight away as laptops.seem to tolerate heat well, what was the purpose of changing the heatsink?

This issue has only started recently, it's never happened before, but has been doing so for the past few days. I would take it in to get checked over but I'm currently at exam time and I require my laptop for some of those assessments. I just want to know if it's safe to use my laptop, or if I need to take it in to get fixed urgently.

Sometimes when I turn my laptop on, all I hear is the strong whirring of the fan, it's a little louder than if my laptop turns on successfully. Nothing displays on the screen (normally the samsung logo appears), instead it's just the fan whirring away. I can leave it for a few minutes and this still won't turn it on properly. Sometimes I have to try turning my laptop on two or three times before it turns itself on successfully, other times it starts up right away.

As far as I'm aware I've not changed anything on my laptop, I've deleted a few files (i.e old documents I no longer need), and photos that I didn't need, but nothing important. When my laptop is on successfully the fan is quiet like it was before this started occurring.

Is there anything I can do to fix it? Is it something that requires urgent attention? Sorry I'm not very good with laptops!
Thanks.

A:Laptop having issues starting up?

Check to see if a BIOS update was released.  You should be able to see what is included in the BIOS update, look for fan issues.  I work on HP machines and they had a fan issue that was resolved with a BIOS update.

We apologize for the inconvenience but windows didn't start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
Then it gives you the options to start in safe mode or last known good configuration etc.
I click on safe mode, last known good configuration, and start windows normally and by clicking any one of them it just comes back around to this screen and then gives the option to press F11 to emergency recovery but by pressing this will it lose all data on the computer? TIA

My HP Laptop is having some issues, everytime I open it, it runs for roughly about 1-3 minutes then it either freezes then shuts down or just shuts down. Even in Safe Mode, it crashes sometimes even when it's just starting up. And Yes, I have cleaned out the Fan so I don't think overheating is the problem.I have a Pavilion dv6-1334us Entertaiment Notebook with a 16:9 HP LED BrightView and Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD that is running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 BIT.No, I don't have a disc for recovering, and I don't think this laptop has a HP Recovery Manager.I'm also willing to reset everything. Can anyone help?

A:HP Laptop shuts down after starting up...

Hi I am not too familiar with this model, and to avoid lengthy research, does it have a removeable battery? Does it function the same on solely battery, solely mains? 1 - 3 minutes and mine aint even booted.  So I would boot another OS from USB or DVD and not use the HDD at all, even physically remove it for the purposes of investigation. The reasoning is software corruption killing off the processes, malware etc etc, or there may be a problem with the HDD. Another OS that wont touch the HDD, Knoppix or Slitaz. If in doubt please ask.

Hello, any help is appreciated

I have a Samsung laptop that is running windows 7 that worked one day but then the next morning it didn't. With a multimeter I have tested the AC charger and power was running through that at around 19volts. I then tested how much power was getting through to where the battery was and it was only 2 volts. If anyone has any ideas on how I could cheaply and easily fix this it would be appreciated.

Other information:
Laptop overheated often previous to this and the fans were loud

Laptop crashed and shutdown randomly

Sometimes laptop would sort of start and fans would blow but nothing would happen, normally restarting fixed this but this happened once before it never started again.

Battery hadn't been working prior to this.

Thanks.

So basically a today I was playing a videogame on my pc (tf2) and it started to freeze, I did alt+tab to close it trough task manager and the entire computer freezed after I tried to open task manager. I waiter for about 30 minutes to see if the thing would unfreeze, after that I got mad and just turned it off by pressing the power button.
When I tried to turn it on again it loaded windows and everything but when i opened my desktop widget it freezed, I turned it off by pushing the button again and when I turned it on again it did the same thing.
After that i turned on again and when it freezed I closed the laptop, left it for about 20 minutes and then opened it again.
After I opened it the "we are starting windows" message appeared, as if I reseted the whole damn thing, after it loaded it took me to the widget start and there were no widgets, I managed to open the desktop and nothing seemed to work.
After a little time passed by, the "your computer ran into a problem" message appeared and the problem seemed to be: Kernel data inpage error.
I really dont know what to do now, so should i do a total reboot to see if it fixes it, or should I just get a new pc?
I really think it was my fault for turning the thing off by pressing the power button.
I have windows 8 and my laptop is an Inspiron 3520.

Question: Is there any possibililty to circumvent using the Recovery Disk, keeping my files on the C-drive and get the system started up

I have a Toshiba Satellite A-45-S150 laptop that came with WINDOWS XP preinstalled and worked fine for 2 years until today.

For protection I use a Bios password. When I power up and enter the Bios-Password, a message says: "Valid password entered, Windows is starting up", but nothing happens.
After hitting CTRL/ALT & DEL the systems searches around and after some time says " Please enter system desk" and hit any key.

The trouble is, I dont' have any system disk, just the Recovery Disk that came with the computer.
And when I enter it, the text "WIN-95" is shown on the black screen and a message says, that the hard disk will be erased after the default system has been re-installed.
I can enter MS-DOS, but I can't enter the Directory of C and thus cannot backup my files using DOS.

Can anyone help me?

Regards,
Meusowitsch

A:Toshiba Laptop no more starting up

It sounds like your boot sector or MFT has been corrupted.

ince Toshiba saw fit to use a recovery CD rather than an actual XP cd, you'll need to get your hands on an OEM XP cd (unbranded ... that is no Dell or other company label) of the same type you have (Home or Pro).

Boot to it, and choose the Recovery Console option. Then run FIXMBR and FIXBOOT.

Let us know if this solves your issue.

Good day everyone,

To start with,I had a problems with my laptop(MSI GX-70 3BE) before. Performance going down, freezes, etc.
I scanned my laptop for everything i possibly could. However, i dint find anything that might help me..probably because I don't really know a lot about technical side of computers. So one day ago i changed my power plan on "balanced" and went sleep. When i woke up i got a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_Failure BS. And it repeated every 15 min until i changed my power plan back to "high performance".
However, my CPU is still really overload..its going up to 99% every few min. Also, my fan laptop's fan working hard, but it started long time ago.

Ill appreciate any help from you, because i have no idea whats going on. Thank you!

Hi All,

I have a big problem on my pc "Windows XP Home SP2" boots very slow like it would take you 10-15min in windows logo and after you sign in it's also very slow..i then checked my services running and i cannot find any suspecting viruses but by CPU % is going up to 100% and yet Im not doing anything. Here's the long story of what had happened.

When I shudtdown my pc an error message appears "ccApp not responding" and I chose end now to shut down my pc. When I open again my pc it starts up very slow. I then tried to do a system restore and afterwards it errors out as well "system restore incomplete" I used a lot of system restore checkpoints "manual & automatic checkpoints" still ended up incomplete. I then found a thread saying that i should stop the ccApp and that causes the problem. I unchecked it on my msconfig and still it my pc starts very slow and my CPU% is going up even though i didnt open any programs. I then unistalled my NIS 2006 hoping that it will get back to normal and still it hasnt. I then tried doing a restore again then another error occurs "system restore cannot protect your computer". I then restarted my computer and tried accessing system restore, a message appears telling me that my system restore is off, when i turned it on "monitoring" all my restore points are gone

I have tried to do a manual reset , and bios reset and it still does the same thing. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem myself as I can't afford to take it in but need it for school.thanks

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

Please provide this information so we can provide a complete analysis: Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions

I've gotta wonder if this is hardware issue; please run these free diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
If you can't run the bootable hard drive test, please at least run a hard drive test inside of Windows (I suspect a hard drive problem).

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Hello. I have this laptop for 9 months.About a month ago when I tried to start the laptop, it failed to start. Interesting thing is that the power button has a blue light that informs when the boot is in progress. And so when I press the button light turns on, but after a few seconds goes off as it should do if the boot fails. But if there are several attempts and I hit a little the laptop underneath, blue light will stay on but the starting process fails. If I disconnect the main battery and redo the hole process the computer finally starts. Beside that in the process of starting after I press the power button the cooler starts to work too. But just like the blue light, it stops when start up process fail. But when the light remains lit the cooler continue to work at a lower level. I know it's bad and that i need to pay a visit to repair shop. But i'm asking here because maybe someone has some ideas on what it could be. So i could make some ideas on how much would it cost.

A:Starting my laptop fails

Sounds like something is loose inside. If you knock it from below or if you take the battery out (where you turn it upside down), the loose piece seems to fall into place.

I think you are right. A technician has to open it and see what the story is.

What you could try yourself is to reseat the Dimms and the HDD. But it may be another component.

laptop cuts off after a few seconds starting. I tried changing out the memory to see if it was bad, but it still cut off. I think there may be been the wrong memory put in it. Could this cause it to do that? if so is it damaging to where i could not get new memory if what is in it is dead? In the past the laptop used to get real hot while it was running. Could this mean it is a overheating problem? I can not get into the safe mode either it omits continuous beeping when I press F8, but the screen stays black. I changed the hard drive I don't think that is it. I also cleaned the heat sink and applied thermal paste to the CPU. Still she cuts off. Any help or ideas would be great! This is my son's laptop and he really needs it for school I need to get this fixed.

A:laptop cuts off after starting

I don't think safe mode would help even if you could get to it, as the shutdown occurs long before Windows has begun to load, indicating that it's likely to be an issue with some vital hardware component. Safe Mode allows you to alter settings or remove software or drivers which prevent normal startup, but it's of no use when faulty hardware is the problem.

With bad or incompatible RAM you would hear a series of error beeps at boot time (assuming the motherboard itself was healthy). A single beep means all vital hardware is okay. If no beeps at all, that indicates motherboard damage.

Finally, you didn't say whether you've tried using it from the mains. If you've only tried running it from battery power, the battery may be almost flat or it's reached the end of it's serviceable life.
