Hp envy 360 wont charge, wont use battery power, battery lev...

Q: Hp envy 360 wont charge, wont use battery power, battery lev...

I bought the laptop used. it appeared the battery wsdead. I bought a new battery. The battery would stay at 53 percent and when i would unplug the charger it would immediatly shut off. i troubleshooted in the device manager and reset the laptop. Nothing happened. I reset a second time and the battery was charging and the laptop would run off battery power. this soon stopped working. I continued to troubleshoot. i got it to charge again and run off battery power but now it will again not run off battery power. the battery is now at 74 percent so i know at some piont charging was happening. this is very frustrating. Iv built a gaming pc jst recently and i feel like i should be able to figure this out. Any help would be much appreciated.

So, my issue that ive looked everywhere for a solution to is this.  I was about to give this laptop to someone and I reformatted the hard drive to clean it up before doing so.  After this I went to dells site and loaded up the drivers for this machine.  All is fine up till this point.  Then I updated the bios to the newest version a12, and all went fine.

Well, later that day I needed to unplug the laptop and go to a different room and It just turned off after I unplugged it.  It wouldnt turn on with battery power either.  Plugged it back in and it loads fine but the battery is stuck on 36 percent charge and says not charging.  Now im getting a message saying the battery needs to be replaced as well, which is *** because I know that the battery was working just fine before this day.  Not only that why wont a battery with 36 percent charge turn on the laptop?  Its got the flashing red battery symbol when powered on with the ac adapter but without the computer on, but still plugged in, the battery doesnt charge or have any lights.

I have already tried the uninstalling of the acpi trick, as well as the taking the battery out while its running, or taking it out purging the power and reseating.  Ive tried all the common tricks to no avail.  Not sure whats going on but I know this battery was good, and it still says 36 percent but wont charge and wont power the laptop on.  Hope someone can help.

Thanks Gary

A:DELL VOSTRO 3500 BATTERY ISSUE (not charging and wont power on computer with charge) HELP!

First check:  make sure the BIOS (F2 at powerup) recognizes the AC adapter.  If it does not, the battery will not charge.
If the AC adapter is not recognized, try another Dell OEM adapter.  If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the DC jack:
http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=9935
And if that doesn't solve the problem, replace the mainboard.
If the AC adapter IS recognized, but the battery will not charge, unplug the system, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Try again -- if the battery still won't charge, odds are the battery itself is bad.
If the battery is original to the system, it's about four years old - well past its expected lifespan.

After my friend's laptop wouldn't run on battery power OR charge the battery I tried many "fixes."

Shockingly none worked that I found.

Only one thing worked for me to my surprise.

A last ditch effort was to open up the laptop (sony pcg-81114L) and disconnect the cmos battery for a few minutes to reset the CMOS.

To my surprise, when powered on, the battery instantly showed it was charging AND when removing the power plug the battery POWERS the laptop now! (and I'd thought I was wasting my time.)

Worked with an off brand battery also.

Many times this has saved many computers that have odd "unsolvable" things wrong with them.

Surely someone else has done this also but I haven't seen it posted anywhere to my knowledge.

Thank GOD for bringing the idea to remembrance!

i have a dell inspiron 1525 when i got it a year ago the battery didnt work... about 2 weeks ago the hdd died so i replace it with a wd blue 1tb the next day the power wire crapped out (the wire wore at the plug) but i was able to take it apart and fix it... yesterday i noticed the battery had some charge (63%) but still if i put my cursor over the icon it says connected but not charging... what would cause the battery to catch a charge after a year+ of not working to it charging then not again?????

A:battery wont charge

Actually, this happens to me on occasion with a similar laptop. Try unplugging the power cord from the outlet and from your computer for about thirty seconds and then plug it back it back in. If it doesn't start working after doing that three times, restart your computer. That usually fixes it for me.

Run the HP Battery health test in the HP Support Assistant. It will read the data in the battery like the number of cycles...like odometer on a car and also the health of each cell. The most likely thing is that the battery needs replacement. They do not last forever.

Hi,
I am using a HP Laptop, 6314tx. It has been 1 year and 9 months since I am using it. In the past couple of months, I have experienced a battery problem. My laptop battery doesn't charge more than 33%. It was 67% first, then came down to 43% and now 32%. Sometimes, it shows '100% available (plugged in, charging).' But, when I click on the battery icon, it again shows as '32% available (plugged in, charging).'

Is there any solution to this?

You might use this HP battery test to see what the health of your battery is. It may be time to get a new battery or charger. You can read more about this test here.

Hi guys,  My battery is no longer going above three percent when plugged in. I have a lenovo y40, the warranty just expired last month, and lenovo is not really helping. I'm very frustrated. Everything was fine, until I turned my computer on this morning and realized it wasn't storing power. After reading around on the internet I determined a few things. A) The battery itself is fine, I ran a battery report... and it shows a sudden drop from 97% to 0% to 2%, and then back to 100% in a matter of minutes. Battery Log   < Click to see my log B) I think the issue is primarily a software one, becuase when I disable microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery in device manager my computer still runs for hours at 0% without being plugged in. Anyone else have this issue or know a solution? I'm a college student and I need this laptop to work on the fly for me. It's barely been over a year, and im already having issues.... someone help I can't afford a new lp!!!!

A:Lenovo Y40 Battery wont charge.

In response to customer reports of unexpected battery gauge behavior on Y40-70 and Y40-80 laptops, Lenovo determined the battery gauge software is performing as expected. The unusual gauge results being reported are a reflection of the battery reaching end of life.

Lenovo has released a Service TIP to assist customers with obtaining battery replacements under warranty, or if out of warranty, to find a replacement battery from Lenovo-approved vendors. The Service TIP can be found here: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/sf16-I0023

The part numbers for Y40-70/80 batteries are:
Y40 SP/A L13M4P01 7.4V48Wh 4cell bty (Y40-70/Y40-80) 121500248
Y40 LG L13L4P01 7.4V48Wh 4cell bty (Y40-70/Y40-80) 121500249 substitute part 121500251
Y40 CP/C L13C4P01 7.4V48Wh 4cell bty (Y40-70/Y40-80) 121500259 substitute part 121500251

To determine which battery came with your Y40 notebook, instructions for removing the bottom cover can be found in the Hardware Maintenance Manual pdf here. An alternate to opening your system (which does not void warranty) is to search for batteries using the model/product number located on the bottom cover.

Hi JOVVVVV,
Are you using the original Dell OEM adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point. Check the battery health in BIOS (if applicable).
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.

Hello all,

I hope someone here can help since i have searched the web far and wide for a solution but nothing seems to work.

Okay so i will tell you what led up to this problem:

I had a friend with an Sony Vaio SVF15A1C5E who from when he bought it had windows 8.1 installed. So he came to me with windows 7 and asked if i could make a clean install with. So i did without any big problems, he had it for like 2 months and everything worked. Then he installed some shitty programs on and it went slow on him. So we had to reinstall windows just to make sure everything was gone.
So i reinstalled Windows 7 without any problems every driver seemed to work but suddenly i noticed that the battery would not charge which i found odd, so i fumbled around with the AC but nothing seemed to work. Then i tried to reinstall the driver for the AC management that was on it. Still nothing seemed to change it. Then i thought okay, i will just reinstall windows 7 once again and it should work. But sure enough it did not work. So i am stuck now and i do not know what to do.

Notice this is a laptop only 1 year old and the battery cannot be taken out so i can try those options people have come up with on other threads. Also i tried to update bios but it says that bios is fully updated. SP1 is also installed.

I really hope someone can help here. Thanks.

Okay so now i have installed windows 8.1 on it and it does charge with it. So it is without a doubt a software problem. im still not having windows 8 on this laptop. since my friend wants windows 7 on it.

I have started having problems with the secondary battery on my HP Envy x2. I've had it for a couple of months now and to begin with everything was fine. A couple of weeks ago I began to have intermittent warnings when I turned on the Envy. It said that there was a problem with the calibration of the secondary battery and it needed callibrated or possibly replaced. The problem is that even though it says this it sometimes shows that the battery has successfully fully charged and sometimes it doesn't. It doesn't always appear to use the charge sitting in the secondary battery, this is intermittent too. I have been through the battery callibration procedures and although the battery again shows as 100% charge it still says the battery needs callibrated.

Hi all, I recently purchased a 2nd hand Elitebook (Win 7 pro) and it worked fine for a few days until I ran Windows Update... the progress bar just hung and eventually I gave up and shut it down.  The next day the ongoing problem began where it does not power up at all - the power button led glows white continuosly and the battery (lightning bolt) led glows white with amber light blinking continuously. This happens as soon as battery is inserted and/or as soon as ac adaptor is plugged in, whether battery is in or not. The previous owner hasn't been all that helpful, saying it worked fine for months before (of course!) I've searched through all the HP support/forums and done the usual hard reset procedures/bios update/reseating ram/installed HP Support Assistant software/run off different ac adaptor/ and even ran the boot screen system tester which turned up clean - nothing has fixed this. To add to the confusion, leaving the machine rest for a day or two unpowered, enabled windows to boot up normally at times. It has booted up successfully only a few times though and another problem has since developed where the built-in keyboard no longer works - most keys are dead, a few activate 3 letters at once (yet plugging in a usb keyboard works ok!) For most recent attempts at startup (the few times it does get past the static/blinking leds) ... Hello.
I've been using a Dell inspiron 1545 from about 3 years now and exactly after 2 years of my buy, the battery failed and it started showing me to replace the battery and always notified me about contacting dell for a new battery.
I didn't take this of much concern so i just ignored the message and kept on using my battery with my adapter plugged in. After 4-5 months of such usage, My battery completely failed and doesn't even offer me even a minute of backup, when i remove the power socket. Then i realized the importance of a new battery and then bought a new battery from Dell.
Its the same battery with the same specs and also the same family type. After i removed my defected battery, I replaced my new bought Dell battery and realized that my battery is working fine. its charging well but at some time, it says "Plugged in, But not charging" Which is rare for any new battery, which is bought brand new.

This is how it looks now after i remove the AC adapter plug and when i depend on the battery backup. it is providing me a backup, but I see a yellow exclamatory mark beside it. Which I think should not be present. it also says "Low battery" when there's already 99% of battery left!
I've also followed some online steps
1) updated by BIOS to the latest  2) Followed some other steps like uninstalling the battery ACI in the device manager and etc...
i would love to get this problem solved. I'm using a PA-12 family adapt... Read more

A:Bought a new dell battery and still my laptop battery doesn't charge!

Hi Utkarsh. I Actually FIXED this problem months back. and I exactly want to help you on this so that you can fix it yourself too..
the problem which is creating your battery to show an exclamatory mark is your power settings.
so follow these steps to get rid of that sign and a perfectly working battery.
1) Click on your battery icon (left click) you should see an option called " More power options" at the bottom of the popup.
click "More power options"
2) Now you will be taken to your control panel where you can see all of your power plans and under each plan, you will see an option called "Change plan settings"
3) Click on "Change plan settings" for your active power plan. Now you will get redirected to another control panel window, where you can see two kind of power options to get adjusted. that is, when you battery is plugged and when your battery is unplugged.
4) Don't touch those options, just click on "Change advanced power settings" at the bottom left of that window. THIS IS THE AREA WHERE WE NEED TO FIX!
5)After you click on "Change advanced power setttings", you will see a POWER options popup, go to the bottom and then you can see something called "Battery" with a plus sign on the left. click it.
6) Now you just have to change the levels for the following values
--> Critical battery level ( you can change it to 10%)

Ok this might be easy..it might not (COMPAQ M2105)

I ended up replacing my motherboard for a model with more features (SD readers blah blah).

I took it all apart and put it all back with the new board in...now when i go into windows (and even before while booting)...the orange lights would come on for a second...then beging to flicker

while in windows...it just will either not charge the battery..or flicker from AC to battery

i CAN power the unit on with the battery alone, and i CAN power the unit with the cord alone...

lastly, my old motherboard (which had a HD connector problem)...still WILL charge the battery...so i'm sure its not the battery...i don't think...

i also dont' think its the AC adapter since it is the same piece I used on both motherboards.....

what to do................

A:compaq M2105 laptop - battery will not charge, flickers from AC/battery

Hopefully you are experienced in working on and repairing laptops/notebooks... and you carefully handeled the replacement motherboard and didn't damage it. Repairing laptops takes considerable skill and caution.

It does sound like the "new" motherboard is bad unfortunately. How did you handle the "old" operating system restore to the "new" motherboard?

Hi everyone, just to report I am facing exactly the same issue with the Envy X2 13-inch 2-in-1 (model 13-j020ca) I gave to my wife.It started happening a couple of weeks ago, without apparent root cause, but it seems related with the magnetic connector between tablet and keyboard.  After trying everything posted on this thread I finally gave up and I am considering to buy a cheaper Keyboard/Mouse combo (whatever option is better and reliable than paying an original keyboard replacement that probably will be failing like the many others around the world). What really grinds my gears (sorry BTW for the expression) is using my hard earned bucks, choosing and trusting a global and recognized brand like HP and not getting any official response about this issue. I live in Chile and when I contact local HP support they don't have any idea about this issue (perhaps they don't read their own HP Support forum). At the end of the day I have a half 2-in-1 Notebook which I can only use as a tablet. It's really annoying. I hope HP can give us an official explanation of this issue, in the meantime you guys keep up the good work and thanks for the advices given.

I've the latest updates from Lenovo for Power Manager.  What happened to control over the battery charging levels?  I can't find settings for it anywhere.  It isn't apparent in the Lenovo settings power page nor in Control Panel power settings.  Anyone know?

So I'm fixing (or trying to fix) a friends laptop. It's a HP Pavilion zv5120us. The problem is that when powered on, the laptop will not accept power from the AC adapter (which should be low voltage DC power when it get's to it right?). It will however charge the battery when the computer is shut off. So it will run till the battery is dead, then charge itself and then you can turn it on again.

Apparently the zv5000s have similar problems like, no battery charge, no power whatsoever and most of these problems originate from the AC jack. I HAVE ALREADY BOUGHT AND INSTALLED A NEW JACK. My soldering was top notch. The problem persists in exactly the same manner. I have also tested the AC adapter. It has a green LED that comes on and with a multimeter it registered something like 40.9 on the 200 setting for AC volts. All these things make me think it's some software problem. Maybe there's some stupid setting that got switched so it won't run off wall power.

If anything triggers a thought for anyone please reply, I want to get rid of this thing.

HP g6-1b60us Notebook PCHere is the situation and symptoms. Battery not charging. Battery icon indicates battery being charged, but it sits at 5%. Have bought a replacement HP battery and that battery will not charge also (it sits at 50%, which I assume is the initial charge it came with). Run the HP Support Assistant and both batteries fail the test saying that cell 4 is bad (cells 1 to 3 have charge, but cell 4 has a 0 reading, even in the new battery). (Is there a problem accessing/charging cell 4?)When the battery is installed and the AC adaptor is unplugged, and the laptop is turned off, the battery charge LED shows a white LED (red/amber indicates that it is charging the battery); now the only time the LED goes out is when the battery is physically removed. Before the problem began, the battery charge LED would be off when the battery was installed and the charger was not being used. Now the battery charge LED goes off only when the battery is physically removed. What I have tried:Cleaned the contacts.Bought a new HP battery.Tried the complete discharge method of turning the laptop off, removing the power cord and battery and holding the power on key for over 30 seconds.Have done safe restarts.Reset to HP recommended settings.Suggestions/recommendations?

Hi,
When I switch on my laptop today, I got the warning "Warning battery cannot be identified. System cannot charge the battery." If I plugin my adapter, laptop is running on AC power, if I remove the plugin, laptop is turned off. I have downloaded latest BIOS update but still the problem persists.
Details: Dell Inspiron 3521, Windows 10, latest BIOS V14.
Please help!

Thanks,
C.S Harsha

A:Warning battery cannot be identified. System cannot charge the battery.

Is the battery OEM or an aftermarket battery?  How old is the battery? I know of Windows 7 OS having issues with recognizing some batteries and were relatively easy to fix.  I do not know if it carried over to Windows 10.  I will have to look up the article to find any relevance.

Hi Guys,

I have replaced the battery of my laptop after using it on AC supply for about year after my old battery died.

I get this error message.
"The AC power adapter type cannot be determined
Battery may not charge.
This problem might be solved by:
Connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher."

But I am using a 65W Dell Adapter that I got with my laptop.
BTW, I tried the steps for disc AC >> Start>>Uninstall MS ACPI >> Insert battery>> Restart. This process did not yield any favorable results.

Please help!!!
Thanks,

I'm having an issue where custom battery charge thresholds aren't being respected on my E5550 when I plug my laptop into AC power.
Steps to replicate:
Using Dell Command | Power Manager, set custom battery settings such that the battery will start charging at 80% and stop charging at 90%.
Unplug from AC power.
Discharge the battery to anywhere below 90% but not below 80%.
Plug-in to AC power.
Result:
The battery will charge when the laptop is connected to AC power despite the battery charge state being above the custom 'start charge' point of 80%.
Desired outcome:
The battery should not charge unless it is is below the custom 'start charge' point.

Using V 2.1.1 of Power Manager and the A13 (latest) BIOS.
This looks like a bug in the battery charger firmware to me. Anyone else?

I have a strange issue. I have a Lenovo T60 laptop and I am experiencing problems with the power management/power guage.

It will often show the battery not installed (power gauge is a greyish-white color with dashed lines) or it shows a red X. It does not matter if I am on AC power or on Battery power, it will show the full range of power, battery level, not installed, or an error.

I have searched Lenovo's site and I seem to remember seeing an FAQ about this, but now that I need it, I cannot find it.

What can I check or do to stop this? While it is annoying, I am not sure if I am having a battery problem or not. I did check my battery on Lenovo's site to see if it was recalled and it is not.

I do appreciate any help that any one can give me.

Thanks!

i don't exactly know where the best place to put this tread is, or if this is even the right forum. But i'll make a post here anyways.

So two days ago my laptop was not able to turn on at all and so i checked the ac adapter and it was beeping so i got brought a replacement from Canada Computers.

So everything after here is with my new ac adapter:

Now it powers on but if the power is connected after the computer starts up then the ac adapter is beeping and the computer no longer receives power but after a random interval of time the beeping stops and computer is charging again.

However if i put in the power line before the computer starts the power line is beeping at first but once i boot the computer the beeping stops and windows shows the power as connected.

Also when i change the Battery Mode in the Lenovo energy management panel the power disconnects and the ac adapter starts beeping again and after another interval of time the power is recognized by windows again and the beeping stops.

As well if i plug out the power supply from the laptop and plug it back in it takes a random interval of time for the power to come and there is also beeping.
So is there anything that i can do to fix this problem.

Thanks,
Harry

I have a Toshiba A75 since 2 years. The original battery had become weak and running only 30-40 minutes. One day it just died. Charge showed 100% but as soon as power went off the computer immediately turned off. So I got a 3rd party battery (I have got battery for another laptop from them before).
But the problem was same. Battery charged to 100% but as soon as power cord removed, the computer just turns off immediately. Interestingly, if the power cord is left in and the power is switched off from mains, then the computer runs for 3-4 seconds and then turns off.
Sometimes while working, for no apparent reason, the ac power light turns off and the computer goes on battery. Then it works on battery and the battery discharges. To get it back on ac power, I have to remove and replug the power cord (of course as soon as I do that the computer is off )
I dismantled the laptop to check the DC jack connection but these seem ok. I resoldered them just in case there was a problem, but there is no chenge. PLEASE HELP ON THIS. Do I have a problem in battery or laptop??????

I have not received any replies so I am posting a followup. I have got a new battery but the result is the same. As soon as I switch off the power, the indicator in system tray changes to battery icon and after 3-4 seconds the machine is off. The battery was 0% when I put it and it charged to 87% and then I tried to switch off the power. The battery is charging ok. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM????

brand new battery, it shows as plugged in and charging but when you unplug it the power shuts off automatically... so the battery is fine and charging it just wont run on it!

What could this be?

also it runs with the battery out and just wall plugged just fine..

A:Laptop wont use battery?

It is of course possible that the battery is fried, and simply isn't holding charge for any length of time at all. However it is also possible that the charge sensors have set themselves incorrectly, such that it holds an hour or so of charge but registers (and reports to the computer) as flat. The computer then hurriedly shuts down to avoid losing power and damaging itself. You may have to recalibrate the battery by completely charging, discharging, and recharging it.

Hi guys, I have a Tecra A10 0n Win 7 x64 Pro and has been working perfect for ages, all of a sudden the laptop went into hibernation and will now only boot up with AC plugged in.

The battery is fine as I have tried it on a different laptop without issue.

When I try to boot laptop without AC connected it loads to the Toshiba splash screen for a couple of seconds then dies.

Has anyone else had this or have an idea what the issue could be. Latest BIOS has been on for a while and all correct drivers are installed.

Laptop runs perfect with AC connected but tries to hibernate as soon as AC disconnects.

Could it be that the laptop cannot take power from the battery for longer than a couple of seconds?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Tecra A10-14P Wont run on a working battery

> Laptop runs perfect with AC connected but tries to hibernate as soon as AC disconnects.
For me it sounds like the battery charge level is very low and that the power management of the Win OS set the notebook to hibernation mode due to charging level.

Possibly the notebook does not charge the battery properly.
If you said that the battery is OK (don?t know how you test this) then there must be a issue with the battery charging system. This means that the motherboard is not OK.

However, in your case I would test the notebook with a new battery to be 100% sure that this issue is not related to a faulty battery.

First off I have a IBUYPOWER 101 batalion turbo laptop or its also a uniwill 259en1 notebook as well. Just recently (past 3-4 months) whenever I restart my computer and it gets to the login screen it instantly shuts down and begins the startup again, and this process continues. However, when I remove the power cord (running on battery) it starts up fine. So basically i have to remove the power cord until it reaches the login screen and then i reconnect it. What would be causing this? Hardware? Software? Thanks for your input everyone.

A:Laptop wont boot with ac on, but only with battery.

Have you got a multimeter to check the voltage from the power supply?
The output voltage should be listed in your power supply.
If your power plugs directly in to the laptop (without a transformer then your on board power supply may be going bad.

Hi, my girlfriend in Beijing has an Acer Aspire S3 latop. She bought a new battery for it a while back and told me it was no good. I was in Beijing recently messing around with it and found that actually the battery is fine (lasts for >4 hours) but when unplugged and running on battery power, the laptop often just cuts out suddenly (loss of power). I took the battery out and had a look and cleaned all the connections but they seem fine.

The next part is the strange part and which I hope might give someone a clue as to what's going on...

When it cuts out, it will never restart again unless the mains power cable is plugged back into the laptop. As soon as that's done and the power button is pressed, it starts up again and the cable can be taken out immediately (I mean immediately - you can plug the cable in, push the "power on" button and pull the cable back out in less than a second) and it will start up and run fine on battery again... until the next time it suddenly cuts out without warning.

Because any unsaved data is lost and because the laptop cannot restart without the power adaptor, this very portable and light laptop is now reduced to having to be kept at home all the time and plugged in, which is exactly the opposite of what she bought it for.

Anybody have any idea what the problem could be or suggest some tests that could be done to find out? She took it to a local computer shop but the guys there had no idea.

Thanks in advance for any adv... Read more

A:Battery - Vista is not able the retrieve the power options for the battery

Hi

To be honest I have no idea what you are talking about.
The Vista power options are a part of the Vista OS and you don?t need to install anything.

But on Toshiba notebook the Vista power option would be extended by some Toshiba power options.
Are you speaking about this Power Saver options?
If yes, then I would recommend reinstalling the VAP (value added package) because these power options are a part of VAP.

This problem occurred with prior Win 7 Home O/S, so I upgraded to Windows 10. Heavens-to-Mergatroid!  This laptop runs just fine when only battery is powering it.  However, once I also plug in the power cord, the O/S does a hard crash within 1 to 3 minutes. How special! I can get about 2.5 to 3 hours when using the battery, but not if I also plug in the power cord.  That means that when the battery gets low I must perform a standard shutdown and then insert the power cord which recharges the battery if I don't turn  on computer.  If I then start the computer with both connected, it crashes.  I am not patient enough to live with a computer that has to be recharged every couple of hours.  HELP! I suspected a heating issue, so I took the back panels off and thoroghly cleaned the fan vents and other cracks and crevices using canned air, but this did not fix the problem.  Since in runs just fine on the battery, I deduce it is NOT a heating issue, neither dust or heat paste issues.  (I also used a cooling mat to no avail) Im 70 years old living in God's waiting room, but parts of my body are 18 to 30.  However, I do have "Essential Tremors" in both hands so I cannot do a full laptop disassembly even if I want to, which I don't.  I cannot afford to pay a computer repair shop $100 or more to try a fix this vexing power issue.  Other than hocking my car (it's too old also) to buy a new laptop, does an... Over the last few months I noticed that the battery meter on my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop was blinking red to green and back... so having had this laptop for several years, I assumed that I would need a new battery soon. The adapter power cord was also beginning to lose some of its covering near the plug in site so I ordered both a new battery and power cord. (That was about 2 weeks ago).

Upon receiving my order, I was very pleased to see that when I installed the new battery and new cord, the battery already had some charge (I didn't note how much). I felt relieved to have my mind at ease that all was now well with my computer. (little did I know that I'd be needing help less than two weeks later!).

Important note... I very rarely use my laptop without the power cord... (past experience proved to be frustrating because I always needed more time than the battery provided.)

I've probably only used the laptop "on battery"... a few dozen times over the last 3 years!

Now... I am in a dilemma!

Yesterday, I took the laptop with me out of town when my husband and I did some real estate hunting.
Instead of using the laptop on battery... we had it plugged into a special power converter for use in the car. I noticed that whenever we stopped and turned off the ignition... the laptop would lose it's power immediately, and as we resumed our travel... I'd have to restart the computer... and there would be the "black & white" warning... Read more

Sounds like a failed HardDrive (if it is you will need it replaced)

Just in case though:

Remove all power (battery and adaptor)
Hold down the power ON button for 30secs (dispersing all internal voltage)
Plug the power adaptor in only (for the moment)
Turn on

If it still doesn't work, I think the HardDrive has gone (ie clicking noise)

I'm trying to reinstall Vista onto a dell laptop, have completely formatted everything and removed all partitions. when it gets to the 'completing installation' segment it sits there for a couple of hours and then goes to a black screen. ive left it on this for a couple of hours before switching off, and on restarting it just sits at the windows logo without ever loading windows.

ive run a diagnostic program that i got on a disc with the computer, the only issues it comes up with are that the battery is too old and the charger is not supported. the battery is so old it wont work without being plugged in to a charger, and the charger, while i did buy specifically for this laptop, is not always recognised by the computer.

could this be the problem? since the computers fully formatted etc and is essentially a blank slate i guess its got to be a hardware issue, does it look like if i pick up a new charger and battery it will work?

thanks in advance for any help or advice.

A:vista wont reinstall- due to dodgy battery?

Welcome to Tech Support Guy
Sorry you have waited a couple of days for a reply.
Occasionally a post does get overlooked.

The relevant questions are
1. Was it working before the format and the presumed creation of the one partition.
2. It ends to suggest that either the installation media is faulty eg a fingermark or scratch or there is hardware error
3. Try it without the battery - just on mains power
4. What OS was on the laptop before
5. I do not doubt what you say but I have never known of any diagnostics that actually produce the message - "the battery is too old" stressing the words too old
6. What is the Vista installation by way of exact version and edition. Is it a Dell Vista reinstallation disc or a Microsoft disc
7. Is the original or a copied disc
8. If it did install how is the product key to be used - is it the product key from the laptop if it already had vista on OR is it the product key from the Microsoft disc. Is the product key available for use on this installation.
9. Will another O/S install - for instance if you do not have another Microsoft Windows to use - say XP - to try - will Ubuntu load

I don't know what you are using for clean up stuff but use CCleaner CCleaner - Delete Junk Files

As a matter of curiosity how old is the machine? Just wondering if you bought extra warranty with it.

As a by the by I do not think much of AVG but I suppose it is a personal choice but in any case in addition to the above you could run these too as no anti virus is foolproof.
If you do install these keep them as we all use these programs as a back u[ scan to out main AV - well most of us.

It wont boot up, what happens is it goes to Acer post (which is just acer logo with the sentence press F2 to go to setup) and then it just resets, it continuously does this. I thought it might be a battery problem but that does not seem to be the case as it does the same thing without the battery and just plugged into the power. I cant seem to get enough time to even get into the setup or try to get into safemode as it resets before it lets me do anything. When i took a look at the fan it doesnt seem to be moving or i cant make it out that it is so im thinking it could be overheating because the fan isnt moving at all but i dont think a laptop can overheat that fast.

Any suggestions?

A:Acer keeps rebooting after Post, wont stop until battery is taken out

Actually laptops overheat quicker......I would say the laptop is definitely shutting itself off to prevent heat damage. Can you troubleshoot the fan?

I have an HP dv6 for myself for work (for 3 years and I love it). My son is getting in to computers and coding, so for his birthday I found him a used HP dv6-1230us that appeared to be in perfect working ordder (just had some minor plastic cosmetic pieces chipped off).

The real issue started when I found out it wasn't properly wiped and there were personal.... ummm.... let's just say honeymoon videos and photos. Plus it came with Vista. I found a computer tech who completely wiped it and installed a legal Win 7 copy. To top it off, he wouldn't accept any money (I am a disabled Marine and he tried joining the Corps but washed out). So I would feel like I was taking advantage asking him for more help.

On to current issues: When I first got this in May this year it had an aftermarket batter and charger, and both worked GREAT. My dv6 gets maybe 1.5hrs on a charge. His got 3+. And of course it connected to our wifi no problem. BUT it only had 4GB RAM (not enough for Minecraft apparently), so he preferred mine with 8GB of self-upgraded RAM. I began working on his and it now has two major issues:

1. The batter will not hold a charge more than 2%. Even plugged in overnight, and I tried using both charging cables, taking out and superficially cleaning contacts with dry q-tips, still nothing.

2. The network adapter WILL connect to our home wifi, but not the internet. I've tried all kinds of trouble shooting, but this one it major league problem and I only play... Read more

Hi,
I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. You can follow the steps below:
Drain the residual power of your computer and recaliberate the battery by following the steps below:

Power off your computer.
Remove all the external peripherals  (printers, scanners or any other USB device) connected to your computer.
Please remove the AC adapter and battery of your computer.
Press and hold the power button of your computer for 10-15 seconds to drain the residual power.
Release the power button
Keep the battery out for atleast 2 - 3 hours.
Then insert the battery and charge it overnight with the system powered off.
Insert the battery in and connect the AC adaptor.
Then power on the computer and see if it works.

If the issue still persists, you can update the BIOS of the computer.
Note: Make sure the ac adapter is connected and the battery is charged 10% or above to update the BIOS. Also, disconnect all the external peripherals before updating the BIOS. All the programs should be closed and documents saved.

Click on the below link: http://dell.to/Th8z4k
Click on “Download File”.
Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
Click on “Download Now”.
Save the BIOS on your desktop.
Once the BIOS is downloaded on the desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
Follow the prompts on screen and restart your computer.

 Please reply with the findings.

First, my t400 would only boot with power cord unplugged. Then it stopped booting altogether. I read to press the power button 10 times and hold it on the tenth time and to unscrew the palm rest to unplug the little battery for 30 seconds. That is the only way I can get it to boot now. I picked up a new regular battery today thinking it might be related but that hasn't solved it. Any ideas?

A:thinkpad t400 wont boot w/o reseting little battery behind palm rest

I looked at it closer and to get it to start i don't press the power button at all. I unplug the power cord and after unplugging the CMOS battery for awhile i just plug the power cord back in and it starts up. The first thing i see as it starts up is an error message about a bad CMOS checksum and then i have to change the date/time in the BIOS or it yells at me to do it. After all that it boots into windows 7. Once it is in windows no matter what i do to change the settings of what the power button does it still doesn't do anything. I can restart it fine but once i shut it down it the CMOS battery needs to be reset to get it going again.

Its a packard bell laptop, and the system started to freeze for no reason. No viruses. Now, I can usually only move the mouse pointer-if it lets me start windows at all (xp). As of tonight, the system wouldnt let me even pass the startup screen, it kept asking for a non existent system password to continue! The system bios clock seems to reset itself too, so I believe the whole problem to be related to the cmos battery.

My main question is, how much should I roughly be expected to pay for a cmos battery and installation from a general pc repair store? The laptop is out of warranty, so I dont really want to be spending 30+ just for Packard to find and install one either. The reason I need someone else to do it is because this particular packard system has the most awkward setup, and therefore access to the battery is next to impossible..

as you can see from my (slightly blurry) photo-
http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/2219/cmoslocation.png

there are only 3 panels on the back of the machine that you can remove- 1 hard drive, 2 ram, and 3 wifi card (I think!).. the cmos battery (the circle!) is to the right of one of the panels, under the casing. I have tried removing the entire casing, all screws and connections, and even from the front, trying to get to it by removing the keyboard, but it proved impossible to me, so Id rather get someone else to do it. No doubt the difficulty is on purpose so that you would always send it to packard for repair, and for a high price, bu... Read more

A:wont boot, bios/clock errors-how much to replace a cmos battery to fix this problem?

If there's a dismantling guide for your laptop online you could try to fit a new battery yourself.
If you're ok with that post the exact model of your laptop and I/we will help you look.

Otherwise to get the best deal I would phone a few small local computer shops and compare their prices with big chains like PC World.

Hello fellow techies,
I have a situation with my Compaq Evo N600c battery or something in that directions, so I need possible solutions. My laptop needs to be plugged in at all times, which makes it frustrating because its a portable laptop. If it becomes unplugged the laptop will turn off within 10 seconds flat. I fear that this will, if it hasnt already done so, mess up my electric circuits among other components. Can any of you suggest or recommend options I can use to diagnose the situation. I would like to find out what the problem is, whether I should buy a new battery or some component or prong that I need to replace? Thanks for the feed back!

Linda

A:Battery will not charge or hold charge?!?!

Yup, sounds like a battery problem.

First, make sure the battery has a charge. Most laptop batteries have a button on them somewhere you can push that will give you the power level. Alternativly, there should be a utility in windows or the BIOS that will allow you to check the power level.

If the battery has no charge and isn't charging, then replace it with a known good one and see if it will charge up when the laptop is plugged in.

If the good battery won't charge up, then there is a problem with your motherboard.

If the battery has charge but won't power the system, then there is a problem with your motherboard too.

If this is the case, then the best you can do is contact the laptop manufacturer and get them to replace the motherboard.

My computer says to get a new battery. But it won't take a charge. The drivers are supposedly up to date. What do I need to do? The new battery only has 1% power. The old battery will still charge.

A:how do I get my new battery to charge?

Stella1,

It sounds like the new battery may be defective possibly. Which system do you have that is experiencing this issue?

I have an acer laptop and it has been working great for the past year but now my battery won't charge to 100%. This only happened recently and my laptop is plugged in for awhile but it'll only read to 80%, 2 weeks later; 53% and now its only 28%. The thing is.. my laptop IS charged. when i unplug it, I get my usually lifespan of the battery before i have to plug it in again to recharge and it only charges to x% again. I've tried "draining" my battery and letting it charge again but it won't charge to 100%. Is there anything I can do to make my laptop read my battery correctly again. Thanks so much!

*I should add its an Acer Aspire with a 6-cell Li-ion battery and this is the only problem I've had thus far with my laptop

See title. I tried unplugging and replugging the battery; no good. Currently I'm at 0% battery power, running only because I'm plugged in.

Why won't the darn thing charge?
