Hi! I recently bought a new laptop, i'm very happy with it and it works fine! Although, now i need to access the BIOS Password, something that the previously owner dont recall setting ( A School ) Does anyone know any way to reset/recover the BIOS password to this model, without buying a new motherboard/BIOS Chip or ''Contact HP Support, because they probably need a proof that it's not stolen?I didnt get any receipt from the School that they've bought it, Anyone got any ideas?
Hello @OskarB98? Welcome to the HP Support forum. I am afraid that there is no other options other than HP Support for business. Most business class notebooks (including yours Elitebook and Probook) have better security. You will have to contact HP Support for assistance on removing the password. Here is how >> http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-phone-assist.html>> http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/business-support.html HP Business support should be able to send you a customised SMC.bin file and instructions which you can use to reset the password. I am sure they do not need any kind of proof - just be somewhat pushy. In order to generate this BIN file they will need your serial number, product number, UUID, etc... found in the startup menu (F1) . Hope this helps. Let me know if you face any issues.5 more replies

I am looking for a device to be able to connect my Elitebook with two monitors 1) external HP monitor (ProDisplay P221) and 2) HP Compaq LA2405x. I notice the Elitebook does not have a port for connecting external ethernet cable as well. What would be my best option to 1) connect with two monitors 2) LAN and 3) keyboard, mouse, usb sticks etc?I found the HP dock connector suitable but appears very basic (connects only vga and ethernet). Docking stations such as this and this appear to do the job but I could not find Folio 1040 G3 in the list of compatiable products. Would you be able to point me to the correct product that is compatiable with Folio 1040 G3? Thanks in advance.More replies

Hello Everyone, We have a Folio 1040 G1 running Windows 7 (64-Bit) and the mouse pad has stopped working in windows. If I boot into the BIOS then the mouse pad works there. So I've uninstalled and re-installed the Synaptics software/drivers (sp75235.exe) and still no luck. Does the synaptics rely on other Windows 7 components that I may have to repair/reinstall? Thanks in advance.
Although if could be a h/w issue, you mention the touchpad works within the BIOS to point around the menus. I would encourage you to run HP SDM (www.hp.com/go/sdm) and update all hardware drivers and BIOS (BIOS needs to be done by itself). That should help with your issue. Do not install any other software suggested by SDM unless you know you use that particular tool1 more replies

We recently bought a couple new HP Folio 1040 G2's and we're having very random (multiple weeks can pass without one) BSOD's on all these computers. Memory was extensively tested, BIOS updated, graphics card and other drivers are also slowly being updated. The same Win 8.1 image is used on other machines and there are no issues there. These machines are malware free and have the same set of applications (AV included) as our other notebooks.
I even tried with http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows_other-system/driver-verifier-tracking-down-a-mis-behaving/f5cb4faf-556b-4b6d-95b3-c48669e4c983, for a day or two but I have yet to catch a BSOD when it's running.
Here's the error received (it's not always svchost.exe):

I see fltmgr.sys and ntfs.sys + "pfn" (Page Frame Number - page file) in the stack text, which may indicate some type of issue with the hard drive.
However, you are telling us that BSODs are occurring on multiple systems, so HDD problems seem unlikely since multiple systems are involved.

We have several older DLP projectors that will not work with the Elitebook Folio 1040 G3. The projector does not sense that it is connected to the Folio 1040 G3 and it continually searches for a connected PC. The 1040 G3 uses a dock connector with Ethernet and VGA adapters on it. The most current Intel grapics driver is loaded as well as all other drivers available through the HP Softpaq Download Manager. The DLP projectors support resoloutions of 1024x768 and 1280x1024. For no apparent reason, my new Folio 1040 G will not boot after I login to the WinMagic security screen. I can access the BIOS panels and have run the long diagnostics. No errors are reported. After I enter the password or finger scan, I get a black screen with only a blinking cursor in the upper left, then nothing happens. At that point. the machine does respond to cntrl-alt-del by restarting the boot cycle. I did not create a spare key and I not want to loose the data on this drive. HP support says the only thing they can do is tell me how to wipe the drive and re-install Windows. I'm guessing this SDD has a corrupted boot record but the data on the rest of the drive is okay. My questions are: 1) Is there any way to boot the system off the recovery partition and recover the data? 2) If I remove the drive and put it into a caddy, how could I use the password to access the data on it? 3) Is there any other work around to boot off of this SDD or make it readable by another computer? Thanks in advance ...

I am the owner of a used Elitebook Folio 9470m laptop that I procured from my friend. My Elitebook Folio 1040 G2 is failing to start up. Currently the AC adaptor is plugged in but the Power Button and Caps Lock leds are flashing white and the Battery LED is flashing orange. The battery is totally drained and the laptop will not start. Immediately prior to this problem I was running a scan on the laptop which was taking several hours and I noticed that the battery was not charging even though the AC adaptor was plugged in. The battery level was 4% for a couple of hours and then the laptop turned off (I assume because the battery was drained). Based upon previous instances of this problem reported on the forum I have tried the following removing the AC supply and holding the power button and mute button for> 30secs removing the AC supply and holding the power button and esc button for> 30secs removing the AC supply and holding the power button and wireless button for> 30secs removing the AC supply and disconnecting the internal battery and holding power button and mutebutton for> 3osecsremoving the two screws from the middle back of the computer base and then hard restarting In each case the flashing lights and failure to start remain. I am assuming the ac adaptor is alright as the flashing lights only occur when this is plugged into the laptop. Doesanybody have any ideas as to how this can be resolved? Regards Rap... can anyone help please????
You can clear the bios in two ways; remove the cmos battery or some mb have a jumper to clear cmos without having to remove the battery. If you can enter the bios write down any settings that you may need since your bios will load defaults [and no password].
After doing this you will need to go into the bios and setup time, date, and any other parameters that are necessary for your computer.

Try entering a wrong password 3 times & see if you get an error/halt code.If so use the error/halt code on link below to generate a master bios password that may allow entry to the BIOS & you can then change or turn off the password function as you wish.https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/26983620/Java_Bios/biosunlock.html7 more replies
My friend just bought a toshiba 490 XCDT laptop at a garage sale for $10.00. The original owner password protected the machine and forgot the password, so when you turn the laptop on it comes up with "password=" and won't allow any other action. I can't Boot from Floppy or CD and I can't enter the BIOS to change the password. I even removed the hard drive with no avail. The only thing I can do so far is update the BIOS by pressing F12 on startup. All other F keys are disabled, Esc and DEL are also disabled. I called toshiba and for $60.00 I can take the laptop to the closest authorized dealer (30 miles away) and they'll remove the password protection. The laptop is a Pentium 2, my friend doesn't mind paying the $60.00 but I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions before I make the trip across town.
See if you can clear the BIOS or remove the CMOS battery to clear the BIOS. That should clear the PW.

Can anyone let me know how I can enable the TPM 2.0 on the Elitebook?
Firmware TPM is version 2.0. Hardware TPM is v1.2, which is a subset of the TPM 2.0 specification version v0.89as implemented by Intel Platform Trust Technology (PTT).For more information on HP security solutions refer to: http://www.hp.com/go/clientsecurity.

Hi I have a brand new 1040 G3 EliteBook and I really would like to lock the Fn-Key so that I do not have to press two keys each time I want to adjust screen brightness or volume. In the BIOS there is no entry for "action keys" - only to switch "ctrl" and "FN" keyThe combo "FN+left alt + left shift + CAPS" does also not work So I did contact HP Support via the HP homepage and after some time I did get the answer that this option just is not available on my Elitebook. I am really, I mean really, suprised and astonishedby this. This is a common feature on every Notebook (I can't remember coming across one that did not support this in the last years) and the direct competitors to the Elitebook line (Lenovo Thinkpads, Dell Latitude and Toshiba businees line) all do have this feature. So I really wonder what has come upon HP engeneers to just ignore that feature for the Elitebook lineup !? - would be like BMW would say: "sorry automatic headlights just isn't available on the 7 series" - what !? So please HP think about this EDIT: What I also do not understand is the inconsistency within one company, some HP notebooks ahve that feature, others just don't !? So I would like to aks HP: Is it bug that its missing in the 1040 BIOS? thx for readingMore replies
I have just bought a HP Probook 430 G3 and I have the same problem. I usually need the number keyboard so I bought the notebook taking into account that just pressing the FN key and any the letter "j" for example, I would get the number "1".
I have looked in the BIOS and there is no option to FN key except "Swap between Fn an Ctrl". I think that something is going wrong. Why I say this? If I do not activate the Bloq Num (F12) this are the actions and there results:
Fn + "-" = "+".
Fn + "ñ" = "-".
Fn + "p" = "*"
Fn + "Zero" = "/"
Fn + "." = nothing
Fn + "m" = nothing
Fn + "j" = nothing
Fn + "k" = nothing
Fn + "o" = the cursor moves to the right.
I think that something in the configuration is working bad.
Hi Nacholo Yeah you are correct. With "num-lock" set to "on" all secondary functions of the num-keyboard work as printed on the keys, but i.e. if I just preess "FN + m" nothing happens but it should present me with a "0". So that seems to be a bug. However I would still like to get a "FN-Lock" functionality as all compertitors have that and I am just used to it - it saves so much time and effort espescially if you work one-handed quite often.I also cannot find a valid reason not to include such a common feature !?2 more replies

Hi, had to replace motherboard with one bought on ebay. Ebay seller said up front he didnt know the bios password. Anyway Everything works ok after finally getting it back together, except the fingerprint reader. I guess this is linked to the new motherboard, and I dont know if having the bios password will help me or not. There are a couple of places in the setup menus where I could enable or reset the fingerprint reader. But if anyone has any better idea as to how to get the fingerprint reader working I may be able to get by without the bios password at all. i still have the original Motherboard if that makes any difference to anything. Power jack mounting got broken on it. thanks in advance, sarge

Hi, I have set a BIOS password two months ago, and I am trying to remember now the password I used, but failing :-/. I am able to use laptop without problems, I just cant enter BIOS. I have like 3-4 passwords that I use frequently, but I have tried every possible combination and does not work. Can someone please tell me if there is a certain password policy that could have forced me to not use one of my passwords? Does it require some kind of special characters, what is the minimum number of letters, etc? This information could help me in remembering the password. I know for sure that caps lock is not the problem, since I have already entered this passwords once (when I needed to boot from USB), and it workder, but now I am lost... I have updated BIOS in the meantime, but I doubt that should be the issue. Regards,GoranMore replies

does it possible to remove bios password on HP elitebook 6930p, CMOS battarey removed but did not reset password, can you help?
You'll have to contact HP for that. You'll likely have to prove ownership before they help you bypass the password though. Removing the CMOS battery on a laptop won't reset the passwords. They are stored in an eeprom instead of an eprom like on a desktop PC. eeproms don't forget when you remove the power. Thats done on purpose to make it hard for a thief to gain access if your laptop is stolen or lost. Unfortunately for you Forum rules prevent me from saying anymore or helping you cheat it. Those type or discussions aren't allowed.1 more replies

Hi, We have the Elitebook 1040 G3 and UltraSlim Dock using Windows 7. I am using 2 HP Compaq LA2205wg monitors that one monitor is connected to VGA and the other Monitor is connected to DVI that is connected to a StarTech display port. Display Adapters: Intel(R) HD Graphics 520.The firmware of the Docking station: 2.30 which is most current firmware. After imaging the laptop and we dock the laptop on UltaSlim Docking station you only get the one monitor which is the monitor that is connected by VGA. The DVI/Display port acts like it is not connected to a monitor or anything. When you go to Control Panel > Display > Change Display setting > you see that the laptop is set to mirror what the 1st Monitor has, then on the second monitor if you look at "Multiple displays" you see that it says "Disconnect the display". When I change it to "Extend desktop to this display" Then hit Apply and yes, I get all 2 Monitors working which is good, I can restart/shutdown the laptop and I will get 2 monitors. This is not something we want to do every time I dock my laptop. The next problem that relates to the problem above is when we undock the laptop and it falls asleep for 20 minutes or more we come back to the first problem which is when we dock the laptop to turn it on the lid open or close it still only displays one monitor which is the VGA. We have tried numerous number of things and everything that we have tried doesnt seem to be working so i... Read moreMore replies
I just recently purchased a Samsung 500GB SSD and I want to add this drive to my existing storage on my HP EliteBook Folio 9470m. The laptop currently has 256GB of SSD stock on it and I'd like to add an additional 500GB. I see that there is a connection that I'm missing. Anyone have the exact part that would service this connection? Or try this link if pics don't show up Pictures of what I'm referring to on my notebook Thank you all!!More replies
I have a HP Dock Connector to Ethernet and VGA Adapter (http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=G7U78AA&opt=&sel=ACC) that I use to connect my laptop to an external monitor (HP ProDisply P221) and the wired network. I now want to connect a second monitor (another ProDisplay P221) to my laptop. What are my options? I don't want to buy a full docking station. I read somewhere that a VGA splitter cable would not be useful as it simply duplicates the same display as one sees on the first monitor. I have an HDMI port available on my laptop. Can I use this port with an HDMI to VGA cable and connect the HDMI-to-VGA output to the second monitor? Will this give me a continuous (and NOT a duplicate display)?Thank you for your help.More replies
How do you get WiDi working on this thing. I have 2 identical 9480m on my desk. One still has factory load (Windows 7 Pro x64) on it and the WiDi works flawlessley. One has my base Windows 7 Enterprise x64 image on it. Initially using the HP Driver Pack (v1.02A), I have upgrade both the Wireless to lateset Intel Wireless (v17.10) and and Video to the current HP Intel Driver for the model (10.18.10.3958 A) I run the WiDi installation software (184.108.40.206) and it continually tells me the hardware is not supported. WHAT ELSE DO I NEED????
1) Make sure that your wireless is turned on.2) Do a search on your system from Intel Widi.3) Open the software and search for Widi enabled devices.4) Connect..1 more replies

HiI have an Elitebook 8470p running Windows 7 Home Edition premium. I purchased the system used, but it was completely reconditioned to new status regarding the operating system. I tried to get into the administrator bios settings but I do not have the password or the sparekey answers for the administrator.I set up the protecttools and set up the user password and I can enter the bios as a user but can only make minimal changes because it is not an administrator. In Windows users and protecttools, however, that name is listed as an administrator. When I try to access the bios under the administrator, still not able to get in, as the administrator bios password still is unknown and is not the same password I set up in protecttools. Is there something that I am not setting up correctly in protecttools, or does it even give the ability to change the bios administrator password? I tried the preboot security option, but all that did was stop the computer from booting at the HP splashscreen as soon as the computer was turned on. I was able to boot by going to the user (not administrator) bios option and used the sparekey for the user booting.thanks

Dear Community, I have a HP Elitebook 8730w and I forgot the BIOS password. I tried all I could remember, I slept several days over it to remember, but I am lost. I contacted HP support but they told me they would not help with a file like smc.bin (which was mentioned in many forums). Any idea how to solve the problem ? I need to change the HDD but do not dare to do so as I cannot set up the new HDD or SSD in the BIOS. Help would very much be appraciated. I do not direclty post P/N and S/N due to privacy regulations in this forum. But if somebody can help me, please send message and I will post all the necessary details. I am student and have low budget so I was gladly using this older but fine Elitebook. But now i am real trouble.
