Y510P Possible harddrive failure

Q: Y510P Possible harddrive failure

I have been getting a lot of "pauses" of late. Not hard on "freezes" but more of super long delays, causing me to force shutdown when I get desperate. I'm thinking that the hard drive might be failing, and so looking at getting a new hard drive, and finding someone to replace it. Ether having what can be kept copied onto the new hard drive, or perhaps put onto an external hard drive. I was hoping someone could give me insight/suggestion for this. I purchased the laptop around 3 years ago, and all warranties expired last year. ~~~~~ Lately, I will notice programs will stop responding. When I look at the Task Manager, it will show "Firefox (Not Responding)" for example, I can try and end task, but that has no immediate effect. If I try to open up anything else, it too "pauses" and may take a LONG time to open up. Messing with the task manager too much will cause it too, to stop responding for a long time. Eventually, Firefox will close, and things start behaving as normal. Though this can take 5+ minutes to never to solve its issue. I decided to check the event viewer and I'm seeing a lot of: Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued. The device, \Device\Harddisk1\DR1, has a bad block. - This "pausing" has happened to me the last two times I've tried writing this post. During this last time I got a few different errors. "wuaueng.dll (1152) SUS20ClientDataStore: A request to write to the file "C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\DataStore.edb" at offset 216465408 (0x000000000ce70000) for 32768 (0x00008000) bytes has not completed for 36 second(s). This problem is likely due to faulty hardware. Please contact your hardware vendor for further assistance diagnosing the problem." "wuaueng.dll (1152) SUS20ClientDataStore: A request to write to the file "C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\DataStore.edb" at offset 216465408 (0x000000000ce70000) for 32768 (0x00008000) bytes succeeded, but took an abnormally long time (36 seconds) to be serviced by the OS. This problem is likely due to faulty hardware. Please contact your hardware vendor for further assistance diagnosing the problem." I tried to do a check disk over night; however, it never makes it past 9% to 14%. This is leaving it to run for 10 plus hours while I was at work. When performing the check in windows recovery command prompt, it was returning a lot of "unable to access" type messages, and estimating 48 hours for the check to finish. It seemed to have restarted the computer several times (I don't actually know, but it was at 9 % when I left, and came back to it being stuck at 2%) (Took me a while to get the computer to STOP checking whenever the computer booted, as it would never finish). This scan check, and the problems I had with it, and leaving it running for so long; I feel damaged the drive further. Causing this "pausing" to occur more frequently and severely. - A semi-separate problem, but possibly related; for a long time, since before this year started, I've had issues starting the computer. From a cold boot, Lenovo "thinks" for several minutes before reaching a blue screen of death, stating that there is no hardware. Then the laptop restarts, and then boots up normally. (As of late, it has been taking longer and longer to start up. Upwards to around 10-20 minutes) But this has been occurring long before any of the pausing issues.

I just want more info/clarification.1. What OS are you using?2. Are your drives in RAID configuration?3. Is your unit 501P or 510P?

Recently came home to my pc today (which I never shut down) and I have a blue screen on my computer. It says something to the liking of if I have recently installed new hardware, to make sure it was installed right. If it is installed, then to remove it. Then restart. Well, no new hardware.
I restart my comp, and at the first BIOS screen, I get the message:
"Pri Master Hard Disk: S.M.A.R.T. Status BAD, Backup and Replace
Press F1 To Continue"

I only have one hd on it at the moment (I believe it to be a 160gb western digital 7200rpm drive).

When I run Aida32, it tells me this about the drive:

My laptop does not boot up.
When I go into set-up it does not show the harddrive.
When I try to boot up it gives a message that there is no bootable device.
Is the harddrive defective?
How can I check this.

A:Harddrive failure?

Well it could be loose. If you can access the hard drive I'd pull it out and then put it back in; the drive should be accessed easily in most laptops by a panel on the bottom or side.

I'd also check to see if you can feel the drive spinning.

Sorrybut I have a terrible problem with my PC and need immediate help. Last night my pc was on as usual, and suddenly it turned off and i smelt a weird burning smell. I left it off for the rest of the night....next morning I turned on my PC and it said "Boot Systen failure, insert system cd or reboot". This happens right after the bios menu and I cant even enter safe mode. In bios it says Primary drive=AUTO,Slave=AUTO,Primary CD= AUTO, SLAVE CD=AUTO. When i hit the auto on the SLAVE CD and escape it will automatically update to the Disk drive name i have which is correct but this only happens for my SLAVE. MY bios cant seem to detect my harddrive anymore in bios so i figured my harddrive is cooked but IDK . I switched the cord that connects to the harddrive and rebooted and tried to switch the auto back on for Primary harddrive and it detected ny harddrive once...so i rebooted but it didnt work...next time I rebooted it didnt work detect my harddrive ever again. I don't know if its a BIOS/Motherboard problem or if my harddrive is destroyed. How can i figure this out please help. btw i tried other old HArddrives and couldnt get the bios to detect then,,,but one time for 1 of the old harddrives it did the same thing of detecting it once and not booting the OS.

I bought a Seagate Barracuda 7200 1.5 TB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s 32MB Cache 3.5 Inch Internal Hard Drive ST31500341AS-Bare Drive off Amazon this past January. I use it for data storage.

2 or 3 months ago, I noticed some skipping when listening to .flac music files off of the drive, and sometimes videos wouldn't buffer. This happened just over a handful of times over the period of about a month and a half, but the problem stopped occurring. Within the last 2 weeks, Winamp told me there was an error with a music file, then the drive was no longer accessible. I restarted the computer, and that's when the real problems started.

When booting, my computer told me to insert a boot-able disk or something. I simply did not have my 3 harddrives in the correct master/slave SATA ports. I rearranged the cables to have my boot-able harddrive as the third Master, my (other) data drive as the fourth master, and this problematic Seagate as the fourth slave. The rearranging fixed this issue.

Afterwards, a few things would now occur upon boot:
-On 2 occasions, my computer jumped to CHKDSK. The first time, it got to a certain sector then it hung for a while. Eventually, it scrolled through all the remaining sectors and said they were unreadable. The second time (which did not occur upon the next start-up of the computer), it went through the whole process and found an error and supposedly fixed it.
-On 1 occasion (sometime after the first incidence of CHKDSK), Windows started and the dri... Read more

Recently, when I boot up and the BIOS screen is there, the message appears something like "Primary Master Slave S.M.A.R.T. Harddrive status bad. Immediately back up data and replace hard drive disk. Press F1 to continue" . This message appeared two weeks ago after I moved my computer around a lot. When I turned it on after moving, the message appeared for the first time, I hit F1, and then I looked and saw all my documents in My Documents were gone. Week or 2 later, I installed Half-Life 2 and now all the files became corrupted, so I reinstalled HL2. Those files didnt work and within a day, when trying to boot up, it does not even get to Windows, it just restarts and has me hit F1 to continue. It won't even boot into safe mode. I thought the IDE cable or something else could be loose so I re-secured all those and the message still comes up.

So any suggestions and things to try? Could it be that the cable went bad? What about the motherboard itself? What would make a piece of hardware fail like this? How to fix?

Here are my specs:
Western Digital 80 GB HD
Intel 2.4 ghz pentium 4
512 mb pc2700 ddr-333 ram
Aopen AX45-8XN Mother board
Thanks very much for any help

Well I I"m getting this error as soon as I sign in on my account, I get the error sound even before you hear the sound effect of signing into Windows 7. But when I sign in in safemode, I don't det the error, so I was wondering was this fake or not. I uploaded the image to imageshack so you guys with more experience could judge for me, thanks let me know if there is another way I can check. also I did a checkdisk, didn't see the full result, it finished when I was away, I did see that there was an memory cluster that it had to fix, but the rest I didn't see, when I came back it was at the login screen.http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/4605/realornot.jpg

If it has a rw drive then back up your stuff on to cd, forget about the operating system side of things, or do the same utilising a usb pen drive.
Do it asap before the drive dies altogether

Hey guys,

Today I was greeted at work with my own computer displaying "Disk Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and Press Enter". At boot up it does not detect a primary master or slave. For secondary it detects a master (cd-rom) but not a slave, which is fine. It was a design computer originally, dual processor P3's, and a large case with many fans, sounds like a aircraft when I start it up. In the BIOS, I have all the IDE settings set to Auto. Has the harddrive totally died? If the BIOS startup sequence does not detect it, is there hope, or not?

Please advice, thanks,

Jay

Model: ST380020A

I've had this harddrive for about 3 years. A few days ago I was using my computer and suddenly I hear beeping from the mobo, the screen freezes, and I get the BSOD. I decide to restart. I can see and feel the harddrive begin to spin but stops shortly after(thankfully there were no clicking noises or anything to indicate that it was getting scratched),and the motherboard makes a long beep noise afterwards. It repeats this process about 3-5 times before the harddrive stops trying to spin and the mobo stops beeping. This happens every time I restart the computer. The harddrive is not detected in the bios, and I've tried connecting the harddrive to 2 different computers with different cables. Anyone know what's going on? I really hope I can recover the files.

A:Harddrive Failure

If the hard drive won't spin up you've got a problem with either the PCB on the drive, or the drive motor. You could see if you can find a dead drive of the exact same model (ebay) and replace it, since there is reason to believe that the drive platters/read heads aren't messed up.

Well then, back again...

I have a Seagate Barracuda 500 gig as a second harddrive in my computer (XP) which is partitioned into two parts. Accessing the first partition is no sweat, but accessing the second partition with explorer, windows commander or whatever you can think of only results in the whole computer freezing up, pretty much forcing me to reboot.

I tried to run a scandisk as well and it runs fine until it reaches Phase 4 where it just refuses to read/go on further. Should perhaps add that it doesn't freeze in the very beginning of phase 4 but a bit in it.

Would this be a sign of a mechanical failure by any chance? And if so I can safely assume that the disk is bust, right?

I was installing a second SATA harddrive into my working computer becasue i wanted to transfer lots of data fast. when i turned the computer back on only that new harddrive poped up in the bios menu. Then i booted into the windows on the second harddrive. I checked for the other harddrive in my computer anyways but there was nothing else there. So now i have tried my old hard drive alone in that computer and in 2 other computers and none of them have detected it. This Drive has never had any problems till now. The Harddrives model is Maxtor 6L250S0
What steps can i take too make sure it is really broken and i cant get my data off it any more, or what can i do to fix it ?

HP DV9700 laptop's default harddrive just died and has all the recovery partitions on it. I do have the windows restore cds that I created from it (the ones that you can only create once), however I have never used them before and always formatted using f11. I get the boot.cde error that I googled and it was due to a failed harddrove so now I cannot format the computer.

So the question would be, if I get a new harddrive how would I put windows on it. Even if I just install windows on the new harddrive I would be missing device drivers than come from factory settings. What I want to do is refrain from purchasing a windows copy since I believe the windows restore cds that I created have them. So I guess the best solution would be to purchase a new harddrive, and I assume the restore cds would work if I place in the first dvd and it would boot.
EDIT:Windows Vista Home

A:Harddrive Failure, need decisions

If you created restore cds and replace your hard drive, you should be able to put in disc 1 (or a disc that you were told to label as a Boot Disc), and boot to the cd to start the restore process. The version of Windows, any device drivers, files, etc., will be restored back to the way they were on the day you made the CDs.

I don't recall exactly how the HP process creates their images, but most utilities image everything on your hard drive, including the hidden restore partitions. You might even try booting to your 1st cd before you replace your drive to see what the steps are.

After a power failure my pc did not start. All it does is restart after beginning to load windows. I checked the harddrive in another pc and it does not want to open but it does see the drive. That made me think that maybe there is something wrong with the file structure. I ran a test with the seagate harddrive software and indeed it said that there is problems with the file structure.
I tried to run Parttiton magic . It found a lot of errors which it fixed but still I am unable to access the drive.
The one error it gets and cannot fix is that there is too few clusters.
Can anyone suggest some advice please , because as the same old story goes , there is stuff on the drive that has not been backed up yet !!

Hi Ive actually been experiencing this issue for quite a while, where the computer displays a bootup message indicating a smart failure predicted on harddrive...press F1 to continue. I have a gateway nv59 laptop and since replacing a laptop with similar specs is quite expensive Ive considered to just replace the harddrive but I would like to make sure that it is the harddrive's problem thats affecting my laptop. (I've talked about this issue in a thread about a year ago)

Here are the issues prior to the display of this message:

Since about a year ago, the computer has been experiencing with frequent "lags", where opening a folder or maybe startup can freeze for a bit with that loading icon. As time passes, the loading becomes more frequent and the loading times seem to be longer too, ranging from 5-20 seconds sometimes. This doesn't occur for games or for HD movies so I can only assume my graphics card (Ati radoen HD 5650) is working fine.

About half a year ago, my computer started having issues with startup. Usually if I shutdown after doing many things such as using word, downloading, watching tv etc., the computer would have a hard time starting up, sometimes it takes forever to start up (like 20mins?) or sometimes it displays blue screen of death and that indicates me to just restore PC through gateway backup or whatever to either restore it to an earlier time which never works, or reinstall a fresh copy of Win7. This didn't bother me at f... Read more

I by mistake bumped into my ext. harddrive while I was watching something on it, which caused it to freeze. I therefor unplugged it and plugged it in again. I now can't see my harddrive when I have it plugged in. It isn't in the drivemanager either, but it show up as a USB storage device, and says it runs perfectly. So I tried removing the driver and letting Vista install it again after rebooting. And everything seems to be going good, Vista has recognized that I've plugged something in, it's recognized that its a Maxtor 3200 storage device and is "looking in preconfigurated driverfolders" (I have my Vista in danish). So I think everything is going fine, but after a while it says that it has failed to install the driver. It THINK thats why I can't see my harddrive.

Can anybody help?!?!

Apologies, I'm not very good with tech speak.

I had a single OEM Seagate Barracuda SATA harddrive that failed while playing Skyrim. I ran checkdisk and it reported 5 bad clusters. It said it couldn't repair an active partition unless I rebooted, which I did. The damage apparently kept the drive from booting.

Next I tried some things with Startup Repair, none of which were succesful as it reported that repair wasn't possible and system restore bluescreened after circumventing the American Megatrends BIOS screen(no idea what the error message said).

Then I purchased a new Western Digital drive and installed Windows on it. I then used the application GetDataBack to extract all my old files to my new drive...then I formatted the damaged drive, elliminating the Dell recovery partition but leaving the OEM system partition, and ran checkdisk in full repair mode on the large main partition(it excluded 260 bad clusters from Windows).

Then I used Diskpart.exe in DOS to remove the OEM partition as I was prohibited from doing it in Administrative tools>Disk Management(after all this is Dell's computer, not mine, I guess). This seemed to remove a repetitious popup in Windows that kept warning me to backup this disk because it had errors.

Now the only problem I have left is that every time I boot I get the Dell BIOS American Megatrends nag screen. The only workaround I've found is to F2 into BIOS setup and exit...then it boots into windows. Although everything works properly if I ... Read more

A:Dell BIOS nag screens after harddrive failure

Bad clusters, bad sectors can sometimes be fixed by a paid for program called Hard Drive Regenerator as long as the damage is fixable by software means. The removable of the hidden recovery partition from the first drive wasn't a good idea however.

The first best thing once you knew the drive was failing would be trying to snap an image of the entire drive to restore onto the replacement. Seagate offers their form of free version of the Acronis True Image Disk Director suite free of charge for customers. WD does the same.

As far as keeping the old drive plugged in if that is in the exact same sata port on the board it will continue to be seen as the Disk 0 in the DM as well as any other partitioning program. It will be seen as Disk 0 in the DiskPart tool as well. The Dell nag screen is likely due to something Dell placed in the recovery partition on the Seagate you didn't preserve for the new WD drive. Dell has their gimics as far as any hardware changes to contend with.

My Western Digital 100GB harddrive failed today. It was really a drag since I am building a new machine and have a 120 GB that I was going to transfer important files into. I had held off since I haven't gotten the new machine working perfectly yet. But the 100GB drive won't even show up in the BIOS detection. On the old machine or the new one.

I am wondering if there is anything I might be able to do with this HD. I tried some software for Data recovery, but most of them say they can't be used on a disk that can't be seen by the BIOS. I could take it to a shop. But, I don't want to waste my time taking it to someone who will charge me $50 to tell me "It's hopeless." I can't remember when I bought it, so I doubt I can send it to Western Digital. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Well...I'd say that it could mean one of the following:

a. Someone doesn't know the difference between "eminent" and "imminent" and probably developed a malware program which is currently on your system.

b. If the spelling were correct, it's possible that it could be a legit message.

Ok, so I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this as it involves both hardware and software, but the issue began because of hardware. Here is my question.

My laptop harddrive (a Western Digital Scorpio Blue, 320GB HDD) is in the middle of failure. The problem is bad sectors and it seems that WD's own utility can't fix the problem and their support stated I need a new drive. They are out of stock of all mobile drives at the moment, but I just so happen to have 640GB Toshiba HDD from a completely different laptop. My question is, is it possible to use the System Image disc I made when I first got my laptop to install my windows and apps and drivers on a completely new, and different, harddrive? Does the harddrive have to have windows already installed on it for it to work?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

@sassygolfnut44?, welcome to the forum. The error message is telling you that your hard drive has failed or is failing.  Your only option is to replace it.  You should buy a drive that is the same size of larger than the one being replaced to assure that the Recovery media works. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Hello all looking for a little help,

Started experiencing playback lag on most movies that were stored on my E Drive which is a 500gb western digital, taking a movie off that harddrive and placing it on my C drive(150gb WDraptorx) sometimes would hang during the file transfer for 10 minutes then start up again. playback would be smooth if played from my external or main c drive , so i thought this could be my E drive was failing, so i tried a disk check over night but was only 10% when i got up and didn't seem to be moving at all.

1week later i get a BSOD and freezes for 15 minutes so i did a hard reset, freezes on loading screen for windows and BSOD once again, once is started up in bios got windows is missing a certain file and prompted me to system restore and was freezing every couple of minutes but completed successfully. 2 hours later i get BSOD and BIOS reports the C drive as BAD. did a check disk for it and had a ton of unreadable sections but it completed, haven't been able to get back to windows since. ATM am trying start up repair but its already on 2 hours +.

This computer and its hard drives are 6 years+ everything is hooked up via SATA connections.

Should i take the main drive out and install windows on to my secondary or is it possible that they are both failing and should just purchase a new hard drive.

A:Playback issuse - file transfers freezing - harddrive failure

Rectify a Damaged Hard Drive

Sometimes the cause of BSoD is a faulty hard disk. Most Windows operating systems have a diagnostic scan for the hard drive, and you need to run this to figure out the problem. Sometimes the operating system will encounter a problem where it is unable to read from the hard disk, and in such cases apart from the hard disk, you also need to check out the SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) terminator.

Return hardware settings to default in Device Manager.
Return BIOS settings to their default levels.
Scan your computer for viruses.

See what results you get when running the disk tests available in the machine's BIOS.

Might want to try downloading diagnostic utilities from the manufacturers of the drives to test them.

SeaTools from Seagate can also test many disks, regardless of brand.

Hello im unsure where to place this thread. " Disc boot failure, insert system disc and press enter " Is the error i get after i took out an IDE 80GB HDD. The primary boot drive is a OCZ vertex 2 120GB. Somehow my pc will not boot unless the 80GB HDD is in. Im unsure how they are related so could anyone help me out so that i dont need the 80GB HDD to boot up anymore.

A:Taking out IDE harddrive error "Disc boot failure, insert system..."

When you installed the OCZ drive, it sound like you had the 80gb HD connected. So the boot up files got written to the 80 gb HD. Do you have a Win7 install DVD ? If so run startup repair 3 times in a row with the 80gb disconnected.

My Dell Vostro 1400 Laptop recently quit working. Its only 4 months old.
I turned it on and it came to a screen saying,

"Windows dould not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
"\windows\system32\config\system"
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

I inserted the setup disc and booted from it, when I got the the Repair option it says,"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue."

So I took the computer down to the local computer store and they put in a new 130 GB harddrive, ran the setup disk again and it displayed the same missing HDD message.

Anyone have any Ideas of what could be wrong???
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, and welcome to TSF. If it's still under warranty I would take it back to the suppliers.

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

A:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

Hi,

I recently had a very strong magnet. The magnet was then stuck (By a child) to my laptop. I then had errors on boot. I tried reinstalling Vista with the restore disk, but I recieved "Error - Cannot set temp path".

I today purchased a 250gb harddrive (a upgrade from my 120gb), and then Vista installed fine.

Now it runs fine, but I get bluescreens after random amounts of time, with errors involving a windows file. Unfortunately, I don't have the bluescreen error details at the moment. I have however uploaded the 3 minidumps from the 3 occasions.

Is it possible that another part of the computer was damaged by the magnet? Ram?

Thank's,

Tom

I have pretty old secondary hard drive (11 years) and currently in power settings there is an option to put hard drive in sleep mode if it's been idle for X minutes. Is it a good idea to disable this setting and let the harddrive spin all the time, since as I know, frequently enabling/disabling hard drives makes more damage than never putting harddrive to sleep.

A:Harddrive health with harddrive auto-stop in idle

Is the drive going to sleep now ?

You should consider buying a new drive to replace that one, then copy your data over before it dies

I am currently backing up weekly to a small external drive.. it is a small 20gigger. It has taken about 1 year or so to fill up. Now i am thinking long term.. i am considering purchasing a "network harddrive", one that is between 500gigz to 1tb. There is a smaller/more affordable Seagate external drive.. but it is not a "network harddrive".. it has 1.5tb.. versus a network drive that is about 2tb but it cost about 314.

My question is, thinking long term.. and considering the setup i have.. which is a regular PC acting as a server.. what should i get?

Your suggestions are appreciated

Thank you

I installed Windows 10 last year and had to uninstall it due to wi-fi connectivity dropping.   Searching the internet, this seemed to be a frequent problem and Lenova did not support Windows 10 for the Y510P and did not provide drivers. I really liked windows 10 and would love to go back to it.    Is anyone running it, and how did you resolve the wi-fi connectivity issue?    I see on the Lenova Website they still don't list Windows 10 for this model.    Too bad.  Makes me really dislike Lenova products when they don't support OS upgrades.

Then i got my computer back, NOTHING CHANGED, same problems and all, what should i do?!  I have already soft-reseted, reseted bios and reseted whole system, nothing works!  Could you please be in touch with the store i bought it from, because I want my money back for not-working laptop worth 1200e in my country. They said that i need to send my computer back to warranty, for another 1.5 month journey (what is over what they promised, they said 10-15 workdays)  PLEASE HELP ME! anything but not another warranty trip! I also have very good video of the problem if you want me to send it to you.  My model is the one with 750M and 24gb ssd cache.

A:Overclocking GPU and CPU in y510p

If you use the Intel Xtreme Tuning utility you can adjust the multipliers but that is all. The CPU already runs way to hot (and throttles as a result) so overclocking it will only make it worse. I did the opposite and undervolted mine so not only does it run cooler but it doesn't throttle anymore so it actually runs faster then a stock one.

Power cycling is the best way I can describe it. Approximately once a day, my y510p will power cycle all of its USB ports simultaneously, this is the two USB 3.0 ports as well as the USB 2.0 port (which makes things even stranger considering they are on separate controllers). I will lose connection to all devices (for me an external hard drive, USB 3.0 dock, and USB 2.0 mouse) and they will all come up again a moment later as just being plugged in. It is not the same time of day each day. My drivers are up to date. This occurred under Windows 8.1 64-bit and Windows 10 64-bit. There is also no correlation to whether there is a lot of data moving through the ports or if they are just idle.

I've been to the BIOs screen and looked around. I've searched through forms and everything. I'm about to just buy a new battery for it and see if that fixes it. But I'd like to know what happened so I can prevent it from happening again. Did the battery just get too old and decide to die on me? It's been very frustrating.

My guess is that the hard drive is dying.  If it will start, try getting a copy of CrystalDiskInfo (free),  Otherwise, see if you can hook up the drive to another machine to test it and to get as much as you can off of it.

So I have a Lenovo Y510P IdeaPad, I upgraded it to Windows 10 last December and wanted to downgrade it back to Windows 8/8.1 due to some issues that many said are due to the fact that the model doesn't really support Windows 10 thus I experience the problems. However, since it has been more than a month from the upgrade, I can't just roll it back to previous OS and am wondering if there is any way I can find out what my original product key for the pre-activated Windows 8 so I can perform a clean reinstall with it.

If windows came pre-installed on your laptop, the key might be on its certificate of authenticity. Alternatively, you can obtain the key using third party softwares like ProduKey. It'll display the currently activated key on your system.

Found a possible fix (workaraound) of the famous screen flicker problem. I've tried all of the proposed fixes found anywhere on the web and nothing worked for more than 5 minutes. I also sent it to be serviced, came back even worse. The screen would go crazy when showing high contrast images with a lot of black. The flicker was most prominent when testing the pixel-walk(inversion) on this website:http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/inversion.phpIf you have the same problem, try applying pressure on the LCD frame in one of the corners. In my case the flicker went away. I put a piece of fabric between the plastic and the metal LCD frame and after some fiddling I managed to find a sweet spot with no flicker. My laptop is y510p with 755M SLI and FullHD screen.Try at your own risk!Cheers

A:y510p screen flicker FIX!

Ok, I have an update. The flickering can be fixed with a bit of DIY. There's a band cable attaching the display circuit to the metal frame holding the LCD. This band is glued with some sort of conductive glue that goes bad over time, messing up the electronics somehow, I guess preventing the capacitors from discharging properly, dunno.Try and make your own conductive band, I made mine using aluminum tape, it works very well. No flicker noticeable for over a week.Once again, try at your own risk.

Hi all,

Last night, my keyboard suddenly decided it didn't want to work. The following keys rarely work (occasionally after hitting them a gazillion times): 0 (wow it worked just now), p (using on screen keyboard, now 0 is not working so I need onscreen to close these parentheses), colon/semicolon key, and slash/question mark key.

I really hoe this is not a hardware issue as this comuter isnt even 2 years old yet, and having a functioning keyboard is kind of essential. Esecially when some of the affected keys are in your assword... Not sure if the 4 affected keys are connected hysically and thats why theyre acting u together, or if this could have something to do with the fact that the issues arose immediately after some Windows udates.

I would immensely areciate any hel ! Thank you!

A:y510p - keyboard problem

Hi Imjustaguy ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Better to isolate hardware issue from software is to make the computer boot on a rescue media and try typing from it . Using an external USB keyboard and onscreen keyboard further isolate probability of a bad keyboard specially if same thing fails in BIOS (like test typing the affected letter in security password  but NOT to save it , for testing only) .

My battery keeps jumping from 40% to 7% within a matter of minutes. I tried resetting my battery but the battery won't go to 100% charged to be able to reset it (it only charges to 99%). How do I fix my batter if I cannot fully charge the battery and then fully discharge the battery?

Hey, I bought Lenovo y510p laptop like 2 weeks ago. It is the SLI version of the y510p. The laptop worked just fine when I was playing with it, ran CSGO and Skyrim on Ultra settings over 60 fps. Couple days ago, my friend broke my charger, and I went to Walmart to buy a new one. I bought the Duracell charger which is 90 watts and it was compatible with my laptop. Then I plugged it in, and tried to play csgo but the fps was like from 5 to 15. I have no idea how this happened. I also took off my battery and just tried to play it without it and just charging the laptop, and when I opened csgo the laptop shut down. I already made virus tests and there was nothing in the viruses. Please help me if you can, I really wouldn't want to send this to the warranty since it's brand new and propably gonna take atleast a month. Thank you already!

My guess is that the Charger may not be compatible with that laptop....90watts yes but has it got the correct DC output.

Also you didn't say how your original charger got broken. like was it attached to the laptop at the time?

What could be happening is..when you plug the new power supply in it is not the correct power your PC expects so it disregards it and runs off the battery at lower everything. As when you take the battery out it will not run at all. Easy place for damage is where the power plug goes into the laptop.

I bought one of the first Lenovo IdeaPad y510p. Having a dual gpu made for a lot of gaming fun. Yesterday, the room filled up with the smell of an electrical burn. I checked the underside the Lenovo. It had been hotter. I heard workers outside my window and figured that the smell may come from them. A few minutes later very thick smoke came out of the left air vent and made a column in the air. I quickly pulled out the power cord and battery. Luckily, the house is still standing. I understand that electronics eventually fail. Yet, this seems unsafe and dangerous. What if I weren't in the room to act quickly? There should be some way to report this. The support page to send a message has been down with an under maintenance message for days.

Hello, for professional purposes I plan to upgrade the existing 8gbof available RAM on my laptop to 12gb or 16gb, depending on price range. I know next to zero about RAM consideration for optimal compability/performance. I uploaded two images of the currently installed RAM cards. There are still 2 slots available, could someone point me to recommended/compatible RAM cards? (If I can order it from amazon, the better). Thank you for the support.?

Hey, I know there are already a few topics with the same subject, however none have the exact same situation as mine as most are US based. I too have a powerful Lenovo Y510P SLI with a Intel Centrino N2230 wifi card. I am buying a new router for my student room and since I want to buy things that can last for a few years, opted for a wifi AC router (probably an Asus one). But, this laptop won't support it... I looked in the technical maintaince manual to find which wifi cards are supported for the Y510P, there is one Wifi AC card for the Y410P, but according to various posts will also work in the Y510P as they share the same BIOS whitelist. I don't want to flash the BIOS with a custom modded one which removes the whitelist. (I flashed a desktop Asus motherboard to run OSX, went great, runs well, but I can't experiment with this laptop, need it for university.). So I Googled and Ebayed the partnumer and this one came up: Ebay Link, which says "Only for Lenovo/IBM laptops such as Y510P" should be fine right? Only thing is it is 40 USD, Dutch customs will charge 21% on top of it so that makes 48 USD, and the Dutch postal office will charge anywhere between 15-20 USD for paperwork for importing goods. So that makes an total of 68 USD... so that almost doubles the cost of the upgrade...  I used the FRU number for this card: WLAN, WiFi AC+BT4.0, Ltn BCM4352+20702 2x2AC+BT4.0 HMC which is 20200381, and put in the search engine in the "part number" ... I just recently bought a used computer to replace the one I had which died on me. For some reason, my old harddrive isn't being recognized as the main hard drive when I remove the new one and plug my old one in. Both harddrives are recognized when I have my old one plugged up with the extra power and IDE cable, so I was wondering if it is possible to copy the contents of my old drive to the new one and have it where it transfers all of my installed software over without having to reinstall everything?

A:Harddrive to harddrive data transfer?

So what you tried to do is get WinXP to boot after it was installed on a different computer. This usually does not work well unless the Motherboard onthe new computer is almost identical to the old one. At the very least you would want to uninstall all drivers that were istalled as part of the old motherboard then do a repair installation of Windows XP. Then again if your installation of Windows is an OEM version of Windows it is not legal to use it on a second computer even if the second computer is a replacement for the first. If this is a retail copy of Windows then you can do it. You would need also the drivers for the new system.. As far as transfering installed programs from one hard drive to another and have them work properly if at all, it is not likely that you will succeed in doing so as installed programs make changes to the registry so that windows will know where to go look for the files to operate these programs. Just transferring the programs will not make the changes needed to your registry that an installation would make.

Hi,

This morning a fan in my case was making strange noises (either CPU or GPU fan I think) and so I turned my computer off. I turned it on a little later and the computer was making a really odd clicking noise, so I unplugged each harddrive in turn to see which was causing it. I removed the problem drive (not the one with my XP installation on) and then turned the computer on again. This time it just said could not detect boot disk. I've tried installing XP again, but it gets as far as loading all the setup files and then my PC reboots. The bios still detects the harddrive still in.

The harddrives are just normal IDE 120gb drives (the removed one is a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 and the one still in is a Barracuda Seagate). I don't understand why the first stopped working (it is at most 6 months old) and why the 2nd one's installation is not detected (it is only a month or 2 old). Up til today, my computer was working perfectly. At the moment my whole computer is useless and the fan is still making the same weird noise occasionally.

Thanks.

A:One harddrive died, other harddrive's XP not detected

Welcome to Techspot

It sounds like the Drive you removed was the Primary, so the system can't find an MBR.
Also if that is right did you change the Jumper on the Slave left in your box?
Buy a new Fan, why take a chance ?

Hello,

My desktop computer's motherboard was fried in a tragic lightning accident, but the hard drive is intact. I would like to purchase an enclosure for the hard drive and use it as an external hard drive. I'm posting here because I'm worried about compatibility.

Here are the hard drive details:
Seagate, S/N 90Z7588X
ST 380215A
P/N 9CY011-305
Firmware 3.AAD
Date code 08257
Barracude 7200.10
80 Gbytes

Will that work with any of these enclosures:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822153012

and the problem is that the coolmax enclosure wont read the harddrive. I installed it correctly (this is not my first 2.5 external hdd), and the computer detects the harddrive. It says that it is installed and ready to use, but now drive is popping up in "my computer". I dont think that the harddrive is to big for the enclosure, its only 40gb and most enclosures maxes out at 40gb. I could not find out what this enclosure's max compatibility is, so i hope that this is not the problem.

It is not the enclosure that is broken, because i put a different harddrive in the coolmax enclosure and it works. And i tried the Fujitsu hdd in another enclosure and it does not work. So it is definitly the hdd

The harddrive is a ATA-6 and the coolmax enclosure is a IDE ATA 100. I dont know what the 100 stands for, but i dont think that is the problem.

any help would be greatly appreciated. This is a gift for my girlfriend and i really want this to work.

hey everyone, my mom's computer isnt working correctly. it turns on but it doesnt boot up. nothing shows up on the monitor. she has very important files and links that are saved to her computer that she needs asap.

my first thought was maybe i could access her computer through the router that we share but other websites told me its impossible without remote connection. and we cannot setup connects or access her computer at the moment.

i would like to know if it would be a good idea to take her harddrive out and put it into another computer. id rather not put it into my computer (just in case something goes wrong) but my brother has a laptop and could we put her harddrive in his? just temporarily so we can get to those files.

is that the best idea? to transfer her harddrive? if so is it okay that its going into a laptop and not a desktop computer....

A:transfering harddrive (harddrive problem)

You're best bet it to get a 2.5 Adapter for laptop HDDs then you would take that adapter and connect it to a desktop CD-ROM IDE 2 channel 3.5 Ribbon cable goes into the adapter. There you could transfer files off that drive. That's how it's done in IT repair shop. Below cost $6.99.

can get it off here or try newegg or wherever you want go to a local store to get..

It also looks like this various version of the adapter

Just realized my dvd drive does not play DVDs since I upgraded to win 10. It doesn't even recognize dvds, showing me only a desktop.ini file instead. It plays CDs just fine and it burns DVDs as storage device, though it **may** only be burning them as a CD, haven't really tested it. I would like to get an updated driver from lenovo, but I can't get past the Q&A session, it either doesn't know my laptop or thinks I'm running win 8.1 or 7. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Mike

Hi folks I'm new to the forums to please excuse me. I'm currently posting from my phone so when my laptop comes on I'll attach the debug file.

Basically I set my laptop to sleep instead of shutting it down and when I went back to resume my work (about 20 hours later) it was running very slow.

I was searching for my 'Calculator' but made a typo so I tried backspacing the letter but nothing happened. Chrome (which I had opened at the time) was unresponsive and so was my taskbar.

I waited a while to see if anything would happen but nothing did so I forced shut down.

I left it off for almost a half hour and when I put it on I got that error 'Unmountable_Boot_Volume' and it needed to restart and so it did but then the error came up again this time it did an automatic repair which lasted a few seconds then it was diagnosing which lasted a few seconds and then I got the following message:

Automatic Repair
Your PC did not start correctly.
Press restart to restart your PC which might sometimes fix the problem. You can also press Advance options to try other options to repair your PC.

I clicked restart and it did.. I got a black screen for a minute or two but I got to log in. But once again everything was moving slow so as the start menu seemed to be working I shut down the laptop. (It's currently off)

Can anyone assist me with this problem?
It would be really good if I can actually find out what's really wrong with my laptop.
Thanks.

Hello, I bought a Y510P (SLI version) 2,5 years ago (yes, warranty is now expired) and my keyboard stopped working. Two rows of the keyboard didn't respond and after resetting and updating my laptop, contacting lenovo and I had to reset and update another time the problem was still there. Lenovo recommended a repair for my laptop. I declined it because I wanted to see if there were faster/cheaper/better options near my location. Next I searched for a local fast and cheap repair center to repair my laptop because my warranty was over so I had to pay anyway. I found one, send my laptop and a while later they told me it was the keyboard controller chip on the motherboard that was faulty. To repair that they had to replace the whole motherboard. Cost? Around 60% of my original purchase price. Way to much for a student. Went to Lenovo again with this information but of course they couldn't tell me more without a diagnose from their own but I don't want to spend another ?50 on a diagnose. This joke costs me a lot for just the diagnose, let alone the repair.  So my question, does anyone know something about these laptops and do you know if it could be this chip and can it be repaired/replaced instead of a whole motherboard? And, does anybody has experience with the cost of replacing a motherboard with Lenovo? Price in the Lenovo shop for a laptop is just over ?300,- and I don't want to get another offer to repair my laptop voor ?700.  It's sad... Read more

Hello 8-forums.

I'm posting on behalf of my little brother since he isn't the sharpest when it comes to computers. Today his computer started freezing and crashing out of nowhere at completely random times. I couldn't pinpoint an activity he was doing which might have caused it.

On top of that a pop-up kept coming up on his screen about his screen driver having crashed and has been restored. I happen to have the same laptop and I've had this problem for a week or 2 too, but nothing happens when it shows up on my screen (unlike his, where it crashes the computer). His screen now also has blue matrix-like lines all over his screen as a result of todays crashes.

I asked him to send the Zip-file from the DM log collector tool. He only had a BSoD once and he didn't notice the error code. The rest were freezes (forced to restart) and crashes (no BSoD screen).

Hope you can help find a solution to my brothers problem.
Regards Jens and Walther

BSOD-xperts:
I've suddenly been afflicted with BSOD's on my Lenovo Y510P running Win 8.1. Everything was fine until about 2 weeks ago and then I started experiencing multiple BSOD's to the point that I had to boot in SafeMode. After doing some research, it looked like the issues were related to video (NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M) and wireless/bluetooth drivers. I upgraded all of those and everything was fine for a week until this morning when I got another BSOD. After looking for the bug check that it reported, I stumbled on this forum and saw some excellent responses so I thought I'd give it a whirl. I downloaded BlueScreenView and ran that and I've attached the output. I have also attached output from the MiniToolBox tool. I also tried to upload the mini-dump files but I get a message saying I'm "not permitted to upload this kind of file" but I'm happy to do so if I'm allowed to.  Here is a link the output from the Speecy tool as well - http://speccy.piriform.com/results/j7BzfFXyiX3xHgrhWQqHjXV. Would someone be so kind as to give it a look and let me know your thoughts? Thanks!

Hello, bear with me because it is quite a long confusing story. I have recently send the y510p away to get the screen repaired. Because I needed something to work with meanwhile I took the SSD from y510p and put this in an older laptop with a clean install of windows10. In the y510p I put an old HDD with Elementary OS installed on it. Today I received the y510p and turned it on, the screen worked perfectly and I could use the Elementary OS installed on the HDD. I then took the HDD out again and put the SSD in, I was planning to do a clean install on it again but it still had windows 10 installed from the older laptop.I put everything back together and powerd it on, the screen lights up but remains black.I hooked up an external monitor through vga and saw that the windows 10 had booted from the older laptop. When I try to get in the bios (I think it's F2) both monitors remain black. I have the feeling it goes to the bios, but cant display it on the monitor? (I cant find a way to display the bios on the external monitor.)Could it be that the motherboard doesnt recognize the new screen? At the moment the only way to get any visual on the main monitor is to boot Elementary OS from the old HDD. Please help for I have no other ideas. JTADDED: I can currently use the SSD with w10 on the y510p through the external monitor. Hopefully this'll help some people thinking of upgrading . NOTE: Some people are having issues with wireless cards after upgrading. I'm not sure of solution yet, but I would recommend predownloading the Windows 10 drivers from Intel's website before the upgrade. - So far drivers have not solved issue. Not sure of solution yet. Everything went smoothly for me. All fiels, programs, drivers, and settings transferred from my Windows 7 install to Windows 10 (and also from 8.1 to 10 on my Dell, so I assum it'll work on a Lenovo too). Upgrade process was painless and took about 20 minutes. Only temporary issue was video drivers, but that got solved later. Make sure you check for updates in Windows Update right after you upgrade; there's a day one patch they put out and it fixes quite alot of bugs (1GB of them actually). This fixed any driver issues I had and made my screen resolution normal, as it was previously running 800x600 or something, so don't freak out if your screen look weird at first. It automatically changes your default programs though, so if you use Chrome or Firefox you'll need to change it back to that from the new Edge browser. Otherwise, most settings were imported. So far I have found nothing that is incompatible with Windows 10 on my computer; however, beware that you will need to reinstall your anti-virus when Windows prompts you, as it is uninstalled prior to the upgrade. Doesn't cause any issues though and your computer is not at risk ... Read more
