Netflix Windows 10 application does not support Microsoft Media Center Remote

Q: Netflix Windows 10 application does not support Microsoft Media Center Remote

I have 2 questions:
1. Why Microsoft's Netflix App for Windows 10, DOES NOT accept basic commands from their own Microsoft Media Center Remote Control like for example PLAY, PAUSE, FF, etc..?
2. Why Microsoft's Netflix App for Windows 10, DOES NOT support 4K streaming.
I have a super fast computer with a 4K monitor and an Nvidia GTX 1080 GPU.
I could watch Netflix 4K content on my 30" 4K PC Monitor....
Could someone tell Microsoft that they are super outdated....? What the heck are these guys doing. I regret I did not buy an iMac.

In fact, during this year's Build Developer Conference in San Francisco, Microsoft confirmed to ZDNET in a private meeting that there will no Media Center functionality altogether. Microsoft's Gabriel Aul took to Twitter to formally confirm its exclusion from Windows 10 "We can confirm that due to decreased usage, Windows Media Center will not be part of Windows 10."

With me, usually use this software to watch movies and listen music, it's sad news.

A:Microsoft has no plans to support Media Center with Windows 10

It doesn't really affect me since I never used Windows Media Center. If I ever needed a Media Center, I would just take one of my old computer and transform it in a Media Server. However, they are apparently working on something for people that still wants to read DVDs on Windows, so they'll probably propose an alternate program.

Hello,I have been trying to access my Netflix account from Windows Media Center and I know that the Netflix tile is supposed to appear to the left of the "Recorded Video" tile, however it does not show up, and I have been unsuccessful in all of my attempts(See below). (Note that all other features of Windows Media Center work fine) Before I begin, let me tell you all about my system:- Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate x32 Service Pack 2 (Completely up to date with Windows Update-3/16/2011).- Intel Celeron processor 2.66Ghz w/ 2Gb RAM.- Mainboard: Asus P5S800-VM- Graphics: ATI Radeon 9200 SeriesWhat I have tried so far...The Netflix tile not appearing in Windows Media Center is actually a common problem, according to this Microsoft Support page (In which I tried all of the possible options it listed to fix, all unsuccessful)I have also attempted everything listed here in a Microsoft Support forum.Note: This is only for Netflix in Windows Media Center, I am able to watch Netflix using a web browser just fine, so I know Silverlight is working right.......After waiting a few days, numerous reboots, and attempts at the above I am at wits end with this... Does anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance!--Chris

@ hamluis:

I considered placing this topic in the Audio Video forum, however according to Microsoft(the first link in my post) this is a known problem with Windows Vista ONLY. So I found it necessary to add the topic to the Windows Vista forum.
Anyway, thanks for the correction.

Having a problem with netflix. This is happening with 2 computers running windows 7 different specs 1 with fresh install.

I go to netflix on regular computer through media center and it lets me in no problem I select my movie and when I try to play the movie it goes to a screen that says "this program could not display the webpage" and it looks like an explorer window.

When I try it on the second computer i log in and it lets me select the movie but when I hit play it tells me that I need to log in and I enter my user name and password then it goes all black like if its about to stream but then I get the same error message.

I have included a screen shot of what it looks like.

I talked to netflix customer support and they pointed the finger at microsoft. They were no help at all.

If anyone has any insight on this , please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Microsoft does not host the required plugin installer for Netflix; I had to go offsite for it. SUPPOSEDLY, installing the plugin magically makes the Netflix tile appear in some unspecified visible portion of WMC. I could find no Netflix tile ANYWHERE either
before or after installing the plugin.
I posted this question before, but for some unexplained reason, my content was virtually instantly deleted. My ISP is experiencing broadband service interference (age-related equipment failures have been plaguing the service area for the last two months)
that prevents streaming Netflix in a browser, but allows it in other applications. My "real" computer is in the shop for warranty service, and Windows Media Center does not appear to be able to do what experts SAY it can do. Frankly, I've found the
application totally useless. This is the only thing I've been interested in utilizing WMC for, having been singularly unimpressed with it since it was first rolled out years ago (the earliest version froze the operating system every time it was launched).

Thanks. Novice with computers.

A:Is the Microsoft Media Center remote still good for Win7x64?

ok if i understand you correctly ,you are saying you have installed the driver for the remote that you had for vista and the remote works for you in windows seven ( thats exactly what i did) if so it will work fine when you install your tv tuner card.

I have windows media center running as my HTPC and have installed the WMC netflix app. However the app runs with limited functionality. It only loads a small number of my instant queue, wont give me options to add movies to my queue when I select a movie, it doesn't display episodes in a series, plus a few other things.

I have two other windows 8 machines with WMC+netflix installed and they both work just fine with all the normal abilities. I have uninstalled the wmc netflix app and re-installed but it didn't help. This is especially annoying as the bug is occurring on my main HTPC.

Any help is appreciated!

A:windows media center 8 netflix app function limited

did you try reinstalling WMC and reconfiguring its settings? are your security settings and software different between the machines?

also, did you try out the Modern Netflix app? it has a lot of functionality that the WMC version or the web browser version don't have.

AnandTech | Getting the Best out of an Ivy Bridge HTPC: Windows 8, madVR and More..

However, the aspect which stands out immediately is the fact that the video playback bitrate can go as high as 3.85 Mbps. Audio still remains at a lowly 64 kbps. Hopefully, a future update to the Netflix app can provide us with the soundtracks available on specialized media streamers.

The graph presents some very interesting results. With Windows 8, the system consumes much less power and the stream is also of higher quality. GPU acceleration in the app makes the streaming more than 30% efficient when compared to the Silverlight version. Compared to Windows 7 Silverlight, the Netflix app is efficient by approximately 35%. Windows 8, by itself, seems to consume less power too. Considering these results, if Netflix forms any part of your HTPC usage scenario, it is a no-brainer to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8.

with the Modern app, you get subtitles and alternate audio on select titles or 5.1 Surround Sound if the title has it as well as up to 1080P video. Also, the Modern version supports the highest bitrates that Netflix offers and offers the new Super HD streaming (in a limited number of markets though).

I have the released version of Windows 7 I received for attending a Windows 7 developer conference this week. I installed it on my laptop and like what I see so far. The one exception is that the Netflix plugin does not show up in media center as it does with Vista. I have read all the posts in this forum having to do with Netflix and what I gather is that it is coming soon. Any idea of when it will be available? Also, like others, I would love to see a Hulu plugin integrated into Windows 7 media center. Thanks, bweiler

A:Windows 7 Media Center Netflix and Hulu plugins

I don't think the Netflix plugging is going to be available till around the offical release date for Win7 which is October 22nd.  As for Hulu you might want to try Hulu desktop and using Media Center Studio http://www.adventmediacenter.com/ to intergrate it into you MC's start page.  It's not a perfect solution as it minimize's MC and puts Hulu desktop to full screen, but its better then nothing.Von Roch

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad Y510P and I use Microsoft Windows 8.1 Professional with Media Center Update 1 64 bit. Recently, I've been having problems with the Netflix, Hulu, and Next Issue modern UI apps that I downloaded from the Windows Store. I can launch the apps, but it won't allow me to log into my accounts so that I can view my content. I pay for these subscriptions along with others. Windows Media Center won't allow me to install the Netflix app and it crashes every time I try to install it. I am very computer savvy, but I have to admit that I need help on these issues. When I launch the Netflix app, it keeps spinning the circle and I never get to view my content. When I launch the Hulu app, it exits with a DJ1 error code. When I try to log into my Next Issue app, it says invalid login credentials. I have contacted Netflix and Next Issue for technical support, but they can't help me. Official technical support seems worthless right now. I've synchronized my licenses, uninstalled and re-installed the apps, and I've used the official Microsoft App troubleshooter. If you need more information from me, then tell me what you need and I'll be able to furnish the technical information. Also, the nVidia Geforce Experience software application keeps crashing on me. Several days ago, everything was working just fine. The most recent system change I did was to try to install the 720+ MB optional Microsoft update KB3000850 which failed. I'm not sure if this caused my problems, but it... Read more

I've done a SFC /scannow and DISM check, scan, and restore health and it made some repairs and I restarted my PC. It did not solve my problems. I also ran the Microsoft app checker and it said that my Windows Store is corrupted and my graphics driver needs to be updated, but I need more technical support in order to figure out how to fix these issues.

I'm at a loss right now in terms of available options. Please help if you can. I don't want to have to perform a full system recovery back to the factory default configuration if it can be avoided. However, I will consider doing so as a last ditch option.

Netflix logo appeared in Windows Media Center probably after Vista Ultimate SP2 update a while ago. Was able to watch films from Netflix via WMC and remote contol on computer. Then it just stopped playing via WMC. Netflix is still there, my login, film queue, etc. When I choose a film to stream to WMC (click PLAY), Media Center crashes and sometimes restarts or I get a solution from Microsoft that is not relevant. Microsoft attempted a fix remotely for 3 days but made things worse which I had to remedy with little experience. Experts?

No problem playing via Silverlight online. I know this may be an issue between Netflix and Microsoft, or an Autoupdate. Also, heard about a registry string having too many characters relating to WMC. Not proficient to go into registry and have a look even if I back up first. Don't really know what to look for in registry. If anyone here can help, would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance. We have the same version of the software and I had the tab even before the ultimate upgrade. I dont see anything on hers for updates to install that would cover this. Any ideas?

I am very disappointed to know that Windows 8 Media Center would not support Blu-ray. We would need third party software for this. So officially Microsoft is not supporting the Blu-ray format. This is really a disappointment as this shows that Microsoft is somehow moving away from the PCs (desktops/laptops) and going forward with the mobile devices. And the future of desktops and laptops are doomed. As a user of desktop, a few years ago I was looking forward to the Blu-ray era after the DVD era and was hoping that Games, software etc. would would soon be available in the Blu-ray format but it seems that Microsoft has decided to abandon desktops and laptops. Now I wish if there is some alternative OS to Windows!

Windows 8 Media Center does not support Blu-Ray

A:Windows 8 Media Center does not support Blu-Ray! :(

Fees to include blu-ray support in their native player would have been expensive for microsoft, that is why it is not included.

One can download the free media center pack to get native dvd in windows 8.

One can also download free third party player VLC and the associated blu-ray libraries and get support for blu-ray in windows 8.

Backstory...

I have been having issues with my PC since the middle of December ('12). My computer (built by iBuypower) is under warranty, so I sent it back to them for diagnosis/repair (I had to pay $80 to ship it to them, just for your future reference). Before I shipped it back, their tech support had me run memory diagnostics (all 4 sticks, 1 at a time, 15 passes each) and they passed. I then shipped it. They had it about a week, I never heard anything, so I called them. Finally someone said "they're running tests but they THINK it is my graphics card (which at the time was a PowerColor Radeon HD 7970 3GB) causing the crashes". However, I was pretty sure it wasn't because I removed the card and its software and installed an EVGA GTX570HD I had from another PC in my house. The crashes were still happening.

Another week passes... I call again. This time they are "kinda" sure (by the sounds of it) that it was my graphics card. Being that I use Autodesk and Adobe design programs heavily, I assumed the "gaming" card couldn't handle the constant strain. So, I suggested that I upgrade to a Firepro v5900 workstation card more suited to my needs. They obliged, with a fee.

Task at hand...
Their repair department had my machine from 12/24/12 and I received it back 01/17/13. I turned it on the following day (18th), and by that night it crashed again. It seems to be crashing when I watch Netflix via browser and/or Media Center. I haven't streamed using... Read more

Hello,
About six months ago I started having problems with Netflix operating within Windows Media Center. I could launch Netflix with no problems, movie titles are displayed as expected at the main screen. Now here are the problems.
Problem #1 (the search function): Started about six months ago. If I try to do a search, the following error would pop up,
?NO INTERNET CONNECTION, The Internet connection has been lost. Make sure your PC is connected to the Internet, then try again.? Everything else within the application seems to work ok. I can run Netflix in a browser (IE, Firefox or Chrome) with no problems.
Problem #2 (movie title selection): This is a new problem which started about two days ago. With any title selected at the main screen, a Script Error is generated with the following information;
?An error has occurred in the script on this page?
Line: 0
Char: 0
Error: Script error
Code: 0
URL: Netflix.....
Do you want to run this scrip anyway ?yes/no?
Also behind this error is a message ?Adjusting for better playback for slower connections...? Once again I can play Netflix through my browser(s) with no problems. Any ideas as to how to fix the problems ???

I have a eHome IR Transceiver/Receiver and a Media Center Remote ,from a previous PC.

This receiver connects to a USB port and it is recognized in the Device Manager with the drivers, it says the device is working correctly there.

It's listed under Human Interface Devices as Microsoft eHome infrared transceiver, also in System Devices - as Consumer IR Devices.

I have a Hauppauge WinTV Tuner card.

Remote is not being detected by Windows Media Center or in WinTV app.
WinTv has an app IR Remote which is being started, also a config tool which does detect the remote.

I have Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit with Media Center.

If anyone has any ideas how to make this possibly work for Media Center, since nothing shows in settings of Media Center or WinTV.

Could be possible it is an older model transceiver, may not work, but it is being detected by Windows.

A:Windows Media Center Remote

After many days of research, i talked with Hauppauge about my issue. The transceiver i had most likely will not work with my system now. Since i bought this tuner card used i did not receive any accessories.

So i needed to purchase a IR Receiver for my tuner card from Hauppauge that plugs into back of the card, which was cheap.
It now works with the older Media Center remote i had for operating Windows Media Center and WinTV also.

I can purchase a Media Center kit from Hauppauge that has a USB Receiver and a remote for operating Media Center alone, but this plug in receiver works just fine for both. Thanks for looking at this post, it's solved.

On a few remotes, you need to hold down the unit botton that you want to use, hence setting the botton for that device.

I have recently begun to use the tv tuner on my media center for the first time in several years. Both the remote and the IR receiver are registering that I am pressing buttons on the remote (red lights on both devices light up), I am getting no response. Not a single button is responding when I press them. I have uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it. Checked device manager, it says device is working properly. Updating the driver and I get the message the it is running the latest driver. It worked just fine the last time it was plugged in, I stored both devices in their own box without batteries, so I am now at a loss as to what to do next. If anyone can help, that would be most appreciated. Thank you.

A:Windows Media Center display driver error the video playback device does not support

"display driver error the video playback device does not support playback of protected content"

Infers the content/media that you are playing is protected and/or the HDCP handshake is not taking place. This is likely a hardware issue. The video chipset (ie: HDMI port) or the TV does not support HDCP.

Try viewing a different channel or content.

Hi there. Happy summer everyone!

I am planning on turing one of my pcs into a media center with PVR features. I am shopping around for a remote for the computer but I'm not sure what to look for. I am planning on running Freevo, a program for Linux that can play DVDs, MP3s, and do PVR. The computer will be running Red Hat Linux 9. Does anyone have any advice on a remote? Thanks.

Folks, I've just upgraded from XP Media Center to Vista. My old XP system came with a remote control, picked up by plug-in dongle, but it no longer has any effect. Can't stop tv with it etc., have to use on-screen controls. Is there any way of getting the remote to work? As always, not very computer literate so keep it simple! Many thanks, Nick.

Just an update, this is an RF remote control. I've reinstalled the driver to the XF-10 usb rf dongle receiver and the handset was working just a few days ago on XP. I've found an old thread, gone into 'Administrator', 'services' and then enabled HID but still nothing. Media is working find, just no remote. Your thoughts etc. please, thanks...Nick.

I want to preface this with the fact that this post was originally on the Intel support forums for the NUC and was suggested that the issue is likely OS related and not hardware, so i am posting here.

i have a Intel NUC D34010WYKH that ive been using since it was released, love the hardware, have Kodi 15.1 installed over Windows 8.1 as it also manages me media organization.

I came into possession of an Xbox One Media remote that has the best feel and build quality of all the remotes ive owned, including many off-brand Chinese keyboard air-remotes and lower end Harmony ones. but for the life of me, i can't get the built in IR on the NUC to recognize commands sent by the remote.

i have tried EventGhost and WinLIRC and Intelliremote and any combination of the above but nothing ever clicks. i have seen posts related to this issue with sometimes no follow-up (like this) and other times success (on a different OS, OpenElec for instance here, here and here). But even after messaging some of these users directly, i have gotten no further to getting this to work. For reference, the Intel NUC has a Nuvotron CIR that has drivers installed and up to date, and shows no errors in device manager and the bios is up to date with three options for the remote (generic remote, rc6, or xbox remote), all of which make no difference.

does anyone have experience with this device under Windows 8.1 and how to get them to work better together?

I have a gateway media center with the factory supplied ehome remote control. It has worked well for three years and all of a sudden it is not working properly. The reciever's red light, which should only light up when it is recieving s ir signal, is lit constantly and the remote has no effect on the tv. I tried uninstalling the drivers and restarting the computer, but to no avail. I don't know if it was an MS automatic update that has caused a problem, but I can't find any resolution.

A:Media Center Remote Problems

It sounds more like a hardware fault, but eliminate the easy things first.

Is there another remote anywhere in the room with a button stuck down (has happened here, another device remore was under a book, which kept a button pressed and deactivated all remote use as a continuous signal was seen).

Some CFL (Compact Florescent Light) bulbs can emit high levels of infra-red in certain cases and block out all remote use. Turning off the light should fix it.

Start the PC in safe mode, see if that fixes the light - that would then point to drivers.

Hi,

I use XP Media Center with the Microsoft remote.

I want to boot my machine using the remote - can this be done?

If so, my machine will boot up fine - but then need to get past my password? I guess this is just not possible - but i guess i could setup a 'media center' account with no password and use the directional buttons to select that account.

So - any ideas?

Thanks

Jamie

A:XP Media Center - bootup via remote? Possible?

I'm sorry but it just isn't possible to boot the computer with the media center remote control. Media Center uses a USB Infrared device to enable the usage of a remote control. USB devices cannot work properly unless there is power running to them, hence windows XP has to be booted in order to use it.
Sorry for the bad news.

I couldn't figure out where else to put this question so forgive me if it should be in a different forum...
I am wondering where the remote for the Media Center O.S. comes from. The Media Center O.S. is available by itself for purchase OEM even though its supposed to only be available with a PC. Is it the remote that would come with the capture card such as the "All In Wonder"? Or does the O.S. itself come with a remote and a device to process the remote commands like a USB thing?
-Thanks

A:How does Media Center Remote Work?

Well I found out that it's the capture card that comes with the remote and the software that comes with the capture card-TV tuner etc, that makes the remote function. ATI's TV Wonder Elite for example, will work with XP Home or Media Center...

Hello everyone. So I just got the Xbox 360 COD special edition. I'm checking out all my features on the Xbox. There's an option to somehow connect your computer to your Xbox. The requirement is to go through the Media Center. Well, first time starting up the Media Center on my computer, and I'm not able to get the Media Center to open. I receive an error right on startup of the program. It ends up generating a crash report, and closes. I've take 2 screenshots of the error. The first screenshot is of the first error that comes up upon opening the Media Center. The second screenshot is of another error I get when I choose to cancel instead of clicking ok on the first error. I thought getting the most information to you guys would be the best.

I run Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2005 Service Pack 3.

Looking forward to your suggestions. Thanks a lot

Hello all. Didn't really know where to look for an answer to this, so I thought I would pick the brains of those still running the same operating system as myself.

I have a logitech webcam (can't remeber the exact model, will post later) which is hooked up to my homes desktop pc. The pc is located in my family room, and when turned on I am able to see pretty much the whole room. I set it up this way thinking I could more easily capture moments of my 2 year old son acting like a 2 year old. Hilarious. I don't have a camcorder, but have found it cumbersome to activate the camera at times, especially if I am in the adjoining room.

Is there a periperal type remote control that I could use to turn the webcam on? Or, could I safely let the camera run all day without risk of spying, and also of using up massive amounts of hdd space?

Any insights would be sincerely appreciated.

Hi,

I have XP Media Center on my pc and am using the Micorosft remote to control it.

When I want to come out of media center, back to winodws, I press the red button on the remote - however, this shuts the machine down - its does the same operation as if i press the power button on my case. I proved this theory by altering the behaviour of this from settings - and altered it to 'standby'. When i press the red button now, windows standsby.

Has anyone else had this issue? How do i resolve so i just exit media center?

thanks

Jamie

A:XP Media Center - switch off by remote issue

The red power button on the Media Center Remote acts exactly like the power button on your computer. In the control panel under "Power Options" and then under the "Advanced Tab" you will find something that says "When I press the power button on my computer: Shut down". So when you press the power button on the computer, the computer shuts down. That is the same for the media center controller, when you press the power button on the controller it shuts down the computer. To close out of the media center application, press the green media center button and then arrow over to the right to the X. This will close just the media center app and will not shut down the computer.

I have a Vista Ultimate x64 HTPC that is connected to a projector and stereo. I would like to use a laptop or a Nokia N800 webpad as the ultimate remote controller for Media Center running on the HTPC, using Remote Desktop connection. For music this works perfectly fine, it plays on the HTPC via the stereo. However, if I try to play video, I just get a message saying that playing video over a Remote Desktop connection is not supported. However, I don't even want to play the video over the network! I would just like to start the playback using the Remote Desktop connection, and have the HTPC video going to the projector that is connected to it locally.

Is there any way to accomplish this? It's so easy for audio - why should it be any different for video?

A:Remote Desktop connection to Media Center

Try this, it's pretty slick and should do what you want.

However, I could not get it to work on x64, only on x86. It sets up a Tomcat (Apache) web server on your VMC machine so that any browser can control VMC, including an iPhone or other Network/WiFi attached device. Nothing to install on the client.

Hi
Long story as short as possible.
Just upgraded to full version Windows 10. In the previous 2 tech builds IE stopped working. Error
“ This page cannot be displayed “
Microsoft x 3 Techs 5 hours of remote assistance could not resolve the issue. I had no terminate the connection as was taking too long. Their final suggestion was that they feel there must be some (add-ons) preventing IE from starting.

I cannot cover all they did here over 5 hours
However, here are some key areas of trouble shooting done

Remediation
Reset Winsock and Network Settings
Reset Proxy Settings
Created another admin account (IE did not run with different user)
Removed Kaspersky Security
Internet options > advanced > restore default > Reset IE settings
All IE add-ons have been disabled within IE settings
Msconfig > turned off all services

Has anyone else had an issue like this? I’ve just created and attached a diagnostics scan as this is beyond me level.
Thanks all

A:The Microsoft Virtual Machine does not support this application

Assuming it works fine on any other PC I can only assume they have an older version of VM. Assuming they at least have InternetExplorer 4.01 or better, have them go here and download the most recent version of VM. Then run it to install it. <a href=http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm40.htm> MS VM</a>

BTW, before they download it, have them check their current version number of VM, Start>Programs>MSDos prompt, type in Jview and press enter. The version number is in the upper right hand corner of the DOS dialog box. If it's less than 5.00.3802 then they should update to the version I mention above.

See this to be sure they do have IE 4.01 or better. <a href=http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q164/5/39.asp> What version of IE do I have?</a>

My Microsoft brand Media Center remote/receiver stopped working, probably from power outage (and Belkin surge was apparently ineffective).

So I think the remote receiver is dead. Is there any *possible* way to still use the remote with some other IR device? I'd hate to have to spend another $30
just for the receiver.

I use my Logictech Harmony 670 universal remote to control everything, including Media Center, but obviously the receiver is gone so I'm asking if anyone
knows of a trick or workaround to get this going again.

It plays analog TV fine, plays DVD (video) just great, but when I put a DVD in the drive, and the DVD menu loads up, moving from one choice to another is increadibly slow. On the order of 20-30 seconds from the time i press down to the time that the selection changes.

The mouse seems normal speed when making menu selections though.

I'm using a standard microsoft remote and microsoft IR receiver.

Hi, I know I may be a little behind in the software updates, so please forgive me if this inquiry comes 2-3 years after the original problem has been solved. But my problem is this, when I keep trying to install the Microsoft XP Media Center 2005 Rollup 2 package it fails fairly quickly after start up when it tries to install "Microsoft XP hotfix (KB801593)" after this it shuts down my computer and reboots it to the restore point it makes right before installation.

I have been looking around and have determined that it has to do with incompatability with one or more other Microsoft updates ranging from Security updates to .NET updates. However, the answers I have found pertain to none of the updates on my specific machine. Any ideas or suggestions?

Hiya

Help and Support Center provides a centralized facility through which
users can obtain assistance on a variety of topics. For instance, it
provides product documentation, assistance in determining hardware
compatibility, access to Windows Update, online help from Microsoft,
and other assistance.

A security vulnerability is present in the Windows XP version of Help
and Support Center, and results because a file intended only for use
by the system is instead available for use by any web page. The
purpose of the file is to enable anonymous upload of hardware
information, with the user's permission, so that Microsoft can
evaluate which devices users are not currently finding device drivers
for. This information is then used to work with hardware vendors and
device teams to improve the quality and quantity of drivers available
in Windows. By design, after attempting to upload an XML file
containing the hardware information, the system deletes it.

An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a web
page that, when opened, would call the errant function and supply the
name of an existing file or folder as the argument. The attempt to
upload the file or folder would fail, but the file nevertheless would
be deleted. The page could be hosted on a web site in order to attack
users visiting the site, or could be sent as an HTML mail in order to
attack the recipient when it was opened.

Can you please be a little more specific about the applications that you are having trouble with.

Are these applications from pre-Vista production?

Are these applications of the same 32-bit or 64-bit as your computer?

Have you tried running the applications in compatibility mode?

Hi
Don't know where to put this so i just dropped it here, anyway the problem is whenever i open anything the window appears in the left upper corner,so is this normal or is it a problem...shouldn't all windows be in the center when opened ?
thanks.

A:Application windows not opening in the center ?

Many will remember size and position when closed. They will open there next time. Some just allow Windows to open them however Windows wants. There's a free program WinSize2 that gives you more control.

Okay, this is just weird....
.... phone rings, call display shows up as UNKNOWN, I was expecting another phone survey or something but before I hang up I figure I'd at least see wgo it is. He asks for me by name then says he's from the "Windows Support Center" or something like that. I can tell he's at a call center in India or something, poor phone connection, I can hear other people in the back ground.

He says our computer is sending out error messages every time we're on the web or something like that, might be from a virus or some kinda windows errors. We have 5 computers, I think I'm clever by asking him which one he's talking about and he replies "the one running Windows 7".

Okay, so I'm skeptical, but figure I'll see where this foes.

So he asks me to run EVENTVWR on that computer which brings up a "even viewer: window, he asks me to look under WINDOWS LOGS - APPLICATIONS and read to him what the sources are, he asks me how many there is etc. I tell them there are hundreds, he asks for the sources and gives me some kinda techno talk as to what's causing that error.
Then he asks what the sources are for the ones marked in yellow as a warning, get more techno talk.

Next he asks me to run WWW.SUPPORT.ME which brings up a "support connection" window "powered byLogMeIn ". It asks for a 6 digit code which he gives me. Now I don't know what to expect, for all I know this will ope... Read more

The title says it all! Basically I have a comp running XP pro and I want to be able to work locally on one user account, with some kind of remote access server running on another XP user account so that the remote account and the local account can be used simultaniously. I know that this cannot be done with XP Pro remote desktop and could be by Windows Server 2003 remote desktop, but i need an alternate solution to make this happen.

Thanks!

I'm running windows 7 home premium and on mobile, windows 8.1

I find that ultra vnc does a rather poor job for remote control of a win 8.1 pc.
and the other way round too: win 8.1 >>> win7 home premium.

Seems slow at best and nasty things happen to the background on the 8.1 pc. Seemingly disabled or something when connect win >>> win 8.1.

I do not remember all the particulars now, and don't really want to fiddle around with it.

I can say with certainty that connecting win 7 (home prem) >>> win 7 (starter) worked quite well in both directions... although there were problems with background being disabled or such then too.
But the connection was stable and fairly fast.

So, cutting to the chase. Is the "remote desktop" application available on higher versions than mine in
both cases.... worth upgrading for? Is the remote access really well done, and works really well?

Is there some other technique for remote access (gui) that is better, (read faster) than vnc or, as good or better than the windows "Remote desktop"?

Hiya

Help and Support Center provides a centralized facility through
which users can obtain assistance on a variety of topics. For
instance, it provides product documentation, assistance in
determining hardware compatibility, access to Windows Update,
online help from Microsoft, and other assistance. Users and
programs can execute URL links to Help and Support Center by
using the "hcp://" prefix in a URL link instead of "http://".

A security vulnerability is present in the Windows Me version of
Help and Support Center, and results because the URL Handler for
the "hcp://" prefix contains an unchecked buffer.

An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a URL
that, when clicked on by the user, would execute code of the
attacker's choice in the Local Computer security context. The URL
could be hosted on a web page, or sent directly to the user in
email. In the web based scenario, where a user then clicked on
the URL hosted on a website, an attacker could have the ability
to read or launch files already present on the local machine. In
the case of an e-mail borne attack, if the user was using Outlook
Express 6.0 or Outlook 2002 in their default configurations, or
Outlook 98 or 2000 in conjunction with the Outlook Email Security
Update, then an attack could not be automated and the user would
still need to click on a URL sent in e-mail. However if the user
was not using Outlook Express 6.0 or Outlook 2002 in t... Read more

Hello,
I have discovered, that Windows 7 Pro doesn't support multiple monitor for remote desktop service, as it is featured only for Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise editions. See this article http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Remote-Desktop-Connection-frequently-asked-questions
I wonder, if this feature is now supported in Windows 8 Pro or does Remote Desktop work the same way as in Windows 7 Pro ?
I need to connect to my computer using Remote Desktop Client and use extended desktop on multiple monitors.  However current Windows 7 Pro support only desktop spanning ( /span), which is not that useful.
Thanks for your reply.

I have been having problems with Media Center, not downloading the guide.  I have been trying to follow all of Microsoft's recommendations for a fix.
I am running Windows 7 Home Premium.  The advice told me to go into Services and find two files on the list and make sure they were both started:

Windows Media Center Receiver Service (was started), and
Windows Media Center Scheduler Service (wasn't started, I started it).
Then it told be to go to Show Processes from all Users.  And find six files on the list.  The instructions assumed the files would be there.  Only one of the files is.
How do I get the missing five files on the list?:
ehmsas.exe (missing)
ehrecvr.exe (on the list)
ehsched.exe (missing)
ehschell.exe (missing)
ehtray.exe (missing)
mcGlidHost.exe (missing)

Microsoft's directions d that these files would all be there.  It did not say what to do if any were missing.

I have a lot of users now using apps such as LogMeIn and TeamViewer. I would so love to be able to manage the application settings for these programs since they do allow entry way straight into our network. Be even better if I could just lock them down or hide them like I can hide the control panel and stuff with standard group policy. I am very nervous that these users are going to configure something in a non secure way. Any ideas?

Hi ShawnDavis,

Welcome to Seven forums.

It seems to be that you are in a enterprise environment controlling host clients. There are many ways that you can control hosts using group policy.

However, a simple way would be to not provide admin accounts to the users. These software primarily require admin access to be installed on the system. And, if you provide them with the standard users the might not be able to install them or use it if already installed.

Kindly update your system specs here by following this.

Compared with some I've read, my issue may seem trivial, but, whenever I use Windows Media Center to play music, and click to activate the Visualizations, a gray box attaches itself to the bottom of the screen, with the album title inside.

There is no visualization playing. I can see the albums when looking at the library, and everything else seems to work ok, but this is annoying.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Still nothing. When I run itunes, it comes up, says run, then vanishes and never actually installs. SInce many videos seem to run only on quicktime, I am at a loss as to how to proceed. Does anyone have any experience using the HP Mediasmart software to access Netflix? I recently acquired a new HP laptop (Pavilion DM4-1160), and while I am happy with the system, it came preloaded with software from HP called 'MediaSmart'. I normally remove most of the bloatware when I purchase a new system, but I thought I'd look at MediaSmart before uninstalling. One of the features I liked was a '1-click' access to streaming Netflix. So, I tried it. It asked for my Netflix Email, and password. After entering it, the software responded with "invalid userid or password". I tried again thinking I might have a typo, but got the same response. So, I closed MediaSmart and navigated to Netflix in Firefox. I entered my Email and password and got in. So, back to MediaSmart one more time and again, got the "Invalid userid..." message.

I posted on the HP forums, and got no response, so thought I'd try here. If you have used MediaSmart for watching streaming Netflix please respond. Otherwise, guess I'll just remove it and use my browser.

For those who refuse to upgrade to Windows XP SP2, this was posted on another website:

It has been well-known that Microsoft has ended extended support for Windows 98, 98 SE, and Windows ME. This support ended on July 11 of this year. However, something that hasn't been as widely reported is that Microsoft is also preparing to end said support for Windows XP SP1 on October 10.

This isn't really a big deal, as SP2 has been out for a while now and is a free download for anyone who owns Windows XP. The security features of SP2 certainly make it worth anyone's while to download, but there may be a few applications still out in the wild that still have problems running on SP2. This probably explains Microsoft's addendum that they will make "Custom Support Agreements (CSA)" available to eligible enterprise customers.

In any case, if you haven't done so already (and why wouldn't you?) make sure you've upgraded your Windows XP to SP2, and download any critical updates.
