Best Update Configuration Advice

Q: Best Update Configuration Advice

Hey guys, I had an Updating issue recently and am still not clear on the best settings for the Update Settings?

I just installed a bunch of Optional and Recommended Updates, but was sure to exclude the Bad Guys for the W10 Upgrade stuff: KB3035583 and KB2952664

So I still don't know if this is the best or not. I was not accepting Optional and Recommended before, but since having this Update issue though I would change my actions.

This is my current setting:
1. ?Check for Updates but let me choose whether to download and install them? Is this good, or should I got with checking for them Manually.

Now wondering what this setting should be:
2. ?Give me Recommended Updates the same way I receive Important Updates?

Can someone shed some light on this for me? Thanks, Nasty7

A: Best Update Configuration Advice

Hi,
KB3035583 and KB2952664 has been reissued quite a few times
If you only passed on the current versions ?

These are the settings I've always used
The only issue with the update system is these are needed KB3020369 & KB3172605

Hi, this is my first post from the UK on this forum, Ive recently configured my system with everythin i have learnt, I am happy with the preformance but want to know if this is the best possible config?
The thing that most concerns me is the RAM i have 6GB and as you can see ive managed 1.1 ratio by underclocking ram to 701mhz. is the 1.1 ratio worth the underclock? Are the timings the best they can be? win 7 index rated my ram at 6.8 that ent good i dont think.

Even thou i got 6GB ram it still running in dual channel mode, symmetric which alot of people telling me it cant be done!

could some1 look over the info i have given and tell if what i have done is best or can be improved.

I am planning to overclock further once i replace my PSU, and run my e5200 at 4025mhz with fsb 350x11.5, what should i put my ram too then?

Have NT 4.0

Recently downloaded upgrade to IomegaWare.

After upgrade and reboot, received message that modem was not properly configured for WinFax. Went to Setup, but could not get modem recognition nor add modem... even thought port search recognized modem on Com 2. Went to Control panel, but when I selected Modem, it would not respond. Checked event log and found following message:

Event ID 7028
The Control Registry key denied access to SYSTEM account programs so the Service Control Manager took ownership of the Registry key.

Anything I can do short of reloading WINNT?

Hello

I just set up a vpn server (the one built into xp pro) to accept incoming connections via PPTP (default) and opened up required router ports, tested it and it works.

Im trying to figure out how to set it up with the L2TP option instead...

As far as i know i just need a certificate on my laptop, so i can vpn into the house vpn server (xp box) / (w' L2TP) from wherever (coffee shop, etc...).

I checked google but the only tut's i can find are for xp vpn pptp default option. thanks. no luck elsewhere.

anyways...what an $affordable solution, if i can figure this out.

thanks.

Just after advice on dual configuration RAM:

I'm running an AMD AM2 3800+ on an ASUS-M2MPV-VM board with an ASUS EN7300GS video card, it came with one stick of 1GB DDR2 PC4200 533MHz RAM, I've just bought another stick of generic 1GB DDR2 PC4200 533MHz RAM and was wondering which slot would be best to plug it into. I realise for dual configuration RAM you should use the same make of RAM but I don't have two the same so would I be best to run it as single or dual??
Also, if I should run it as dual does that mean plugging one stick into slot A1 and one into B1? I have four slots A1 and A2 together, and B1 and B2 together.

Thanks for any advice.

A:Dual configuration RAM advice needed.

You're talking about dual channel RAM right?

Then you'll be able to run the RAM in single channel mode only. For dual channel operation the two sticks need to IDENTICAL.

I would put them in the A1 & A2 slots.

BTW, Welcome to TS!!

I'm just rebuilding a Vista PC and have the opportunity of Getting It Right This Time, with regard to Internet security. (Not that I had suffered any problems, but prior to the hard disk failing, I was paying for the McAfee Security Suite supplied 'free' with the machine...). So, I am trying to determine the best configuration of tools to use. Starting with the Firewall...I have read the useful B.C. Tutorial about Firewalls (which, incidentally, appears to have been written in 2004 and not updated since). I have also found this useful recent post from quietman7, explaining the limitations of the built-in Windows Firewall supplied with Vista. So, my first question ("Is Windows Firewall adequate?") has been answered ("No.")!Question 2:The PC is connected (by cable) to a D-Link DIR-615 wireless router. Do I need to configure anything in the router for the hardware firewall to work (or work better)? Or is it OK in its default configuration? I have looked at the configuration and there's nothing obvious to turn on or off, although there is the facility to set up filtering of specific ports and addresses. I have always found the array of available router settings somewhat bewildering!Question 3:Regarding software firewalls: a friend (who has configured my parents laptops) recommended using ZoneAlarm, while MoneySavingExpert recommends using Outpost. I used to use Outpost on a Win98 machine (no longer networked!). Is there anything particular to choose between these firewall packag... Read more

A:Firewall Choice and Configuration, advice please

Outpost seems to be working fine.

I'd still like to know about the Router configuration.
Do I need to do anything to use it as a hardware firewall, or does that work by default?

hello,
I just bought a tecra A6 from ebay and it runs pretty slow so i want to upgrade it a bit. Firstly it has windows 7 installed, so I'm thinking of re-installing it back to windows xp professional. Does anyone know if I will find all the drivers support, or will this be a nightmare for me?

Also I want to upgrade to a solid state harddrive but I am a little confused with the 4 pin business poking out. For instance will this HD (see link below) work?

http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/ssd/ct120m500ssd1

someone said you don't need the 4 pins??..what type of hardrive do i look for? what series..

any help most welcome...just want a reasonably fast lappy that gives me internet, wordprocessing and small graphics...its got 1 gig ram which I shall upgrade..maybe once i upgrade the ram i won't need a new HD??

any advice much appreciated

A:Need advice about upgrade and OS configuration on Tecra A6

Tecra A6 is fully supported for WXP so there is no problem to find all drivers, tools and utilities.
On Toshiba download page - http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp
Tecra A6 is listed in Archive.
In my opinion there is no sense to install old WXP. It is not supported anymore and Win7 runs perfectly on this old Tecra model.

HDD in this old Tecra has SATA connector and, according specification it supported HDDs up to 120GB so I think this SSD can be used in your machine.

Reuel,

Do you have any idea on setting up the Linkys Router with 4 port switch (besfr41)? I have followed the directions in the manual but I get nothing, no connection to the internet. The modem is connected to the router and the router is connected to the pc. Although I am using a straight cad 5 cable between modem & router. Use a crossover cable instead between the DSL modem and router? Any comments would be great.

Hi, this is my first entry to this site so bare with me if i mess it up

a few months ago i let my sister borrow my laptop. when i got it back the next day i turned it on and it started up as usual but before it went to the desk-top it came up with-

configuring updates: stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete
please do not turn off your computer

this is nothing new but it stays on 0% for 1/2 minutes then restarts, goes back to this page and does the same again, round and round in a loop.

i left it running like this for a couple of days to see if anything happened but still the same

does anyone know how to fix this?

A:update configuration HELP

Possibly, your sister powered down the laptop during updates. Try system restore from recovery console:If you have Windows XP CD... (if you don't have Windows CD, scroll down)1. Boot from the CD.2. When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts. Select the repair or recover option by pressing R:3. You'll find yourself at this screen:4. Once you are at the Recovery Console you will be given at least one choice of Windows installations. Normally the choice you want is the number 1 choice. Click the number 1 key at the "top" of the keyboard and click enter.NOTE: at this point your numbers to the right of your keyboard are turned off. If you insist on using these keys for your numbers remember to hit the Numbers Lock key before clicking a number over there or your computer will automatically reboot and you will have to wait through the previous steps to get back to the console. 5. You will be given a message asking for the administrator password. Unless someone or something has messed with your computer there is no password so you just click the Enter key. 6. This will bring you to a prompt that says: C:\WINDOWS>7. Type: cd \ Press EnterNote: between "cd" and "\" there should be a "blank space" otherwise the command won't work8. The prompt should now say:C:\>9. Type: cd system~1\_resto~1Press Enter.===============================================================================Note: If it gives... Read more

I first had a dial up modem. I got frustrated with that, so I got DSL. I got a virus, so I purchased Norton Internet Security package with firewall, etc. via download. When I attempted to use the Live Update feature, I got this message:

your dial-up information is correct.
LiveUpdate session is complete.

I then deleted the dial-up configuration thinking that it would then recognize the DSL connection. Not so! I'm getting the same message. Any suggestions as to how I can get the Live Update feature to work for me? (Windows XP)

Hi PJ Staley,

Please do this. Click here to download Hijack This. Run Hijack this.
Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

*Note: When you download Hijack This Do Not download it to a temp folder or to the desktop. Create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This and put it in that folder.

Hi all,

Need some extra help here. I attempted to get the debugging tools to read the minidump files post-mortem, but can only get into safe mode, which doesn't help me. I've attached the zip of the output from the jcgriff2 app.

I'm not positive, but it may be related to an attempt to install Spanish & Japanese optional language packs to Windows 7 Ultimate installation alongside a recommended update.

Initially, it crashed during start up at the 'configuring windows' screen at 15% into it. Two system restores later to take me back two updates, and now it returns to the 'configuring windows' screen on startup and crashes at 0%. Not sure if additional system restores will do much good.

Thanks,

- Matt

Hi,

I have an Acer netbook running windows 7 starter...for several days each time I close the laptop there are updates that attempt to install but fails to do so for some reason...there are also issues of configuration, seemingly every time I start the laptop.

I have read the uploader tool page but before going through this process would like to ask why the laptop fails to update ? ...I recently got rid of any microsoft office programs...does this have anything to do with the failure to update ?

below are the updates that have failed several times ... sorry but the image is very small !

A:Windows 7 update failures and configuration issues.

It`s a couple of days since I posted the above but the updating failure continues...I`ve no idea if the failure is caused by this laptop not in fact having the required internal programs to ensure the updates are accepted...something is obviously not right.

edit ti add...maybe the laptop just doesn`t need these updates...?

Help!
Had an incomplete install of a program...computer otherwise working fine...did a system restore to try to go back to preinstall...in the system restore shutdown and restart, now hung up in a update configuation loop that is in third step up to 99% that shuts down only to do the same thing over and over again. So my system never gets to the mainscreen acknowledging system was restored.
I tried F8 going to safe mode, but configuation step 3 takes over again, goes to 99% and shuts down to restart.
I tried the vista 64 sp1 disc...cannot acccess another restore point since it says the system is already in restore mode....just never gets there with the endless 3rd step update configuration loop.
The disc also does not offer the repair/update mode as an option...only full install.
I do have norton ghost 14 on the system...so there is a complete backup file on another internal drive...but no way to get to it to initiate a recovery.
VERY FRUSTRATING!!!
Could time remedy the situation...letting the computer lay idle for a few days...then try to boot up??? I've heard that this on occaision could work with Vista.
Any other thoughts???
Thanks!

BTW, computer is a hp desktop with Vista Ultimate 64 sp1, 4 gb ram, and intel dual core processor, with a bunch of bells and whistles.

Had this problem on 2 machines; I read and tried all the fixes suggested on the internet; about a dozen of them over and over again.
Problem is the HARDDRIVE!
I had a fresh install and had the problem with existing harddrive.
Also had problem on an up and running computer about 4 months old; just never got around to fixing it.
I tried all the fixes on the new one to no luck. I know some windows setup settings look for certain hardware for some setup processes so I tried an old drive I have kicking around. I Cloned the new drive onto it and ran the computer and then SP1 and all worked. I cloned back to the new drive and about 187 updates have now installed. It's working perfectly.
I had the same problem on the second computer and cloned it onto a different drive and then to an SSD also; it worked on both drives; also had 187 updates install.
Even after reinstalling the OS twice and immediately trying the SP1 it still didn't work until I cloned to the older harddrives.
Finally!!

Hi every bodyI downloaded Windows 7 32bit (no key yet), I've tried upgrading Windows Vista SP1 but when step 2 (expandeing files) reaches 21% the installation stops with following error "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed."I tried to install Windows 7 in a new partition but the process reaches 27% this time and stops with same error.I've reformatted my hard disks completely and installation process reaches 99% then stops with same error.I checked BIOS settings and found only DVD and HDD listed (no third option).the Microsoft suggestion about the registry tweaking did not apply for me (and I tried to install a fresh copy from scratch).I'm using 2 HDD in RAID0 configuration and works OK with Windows Vista, I did load the drivers to Windows 7 during installation but still getting same problem, any suggestion???

Simple solution found for Dual Boot errors!

Here is an update. Since no one else has seemed to find a solution I actually managed to find my own. Just to recap you on what had happened to me, I was trying to dual boot Windows 7 x64 with Windows Vista Ultimate x64. Somewhere in my use with Vista my BCD was corrupt/deleted and caused this error to appear. (Windows could not update your computer's boot configuration.) After searching my computer I found the registry settings were correct, and file access to the folder that contained the BCD was correct, However my BCD was corrupt/missing and so I was unable to finish the installation and get my computer to dual boot. I found this out by typing bcdedit.exe in command with admin access and it gave me the warning "BCDedit.exe could not be run. BCD is either corrupt or missing".

In order to fix this it was quite simple. I had to use the original installation disc for vista to repair my computer's boot files. Unfortunately I didnt have an install disc that would work with vista since I purchased mine before SP1 came out, so in order to repair it I had to create a slipstream disc with the SP1 updates added to it. after repairing I instantly was able to see both Windows 7 and Windows Vista in my boot manager when I restarted my computer. I easily fixed and finished installation with out a hitch, and I'm now staring at internet explorer inside of Windows 7 typing this message. I hope this will help anyone else ou... Read more

I've been trying to upgrade from Win XP to Vista Ultimate. I have tried installing several times. The first time, the computer got hung up on expanding files at 21% and I rebooted. After that I have been getting the msg "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed. I've check on a few forums and someone always says to restore the default value for the UpperFilters registry entry and then restart computer. In the steps that follow, it says to modify UpperFilters and to type PartMgr and click ok. This seems to work for some people, I however already had the PartMgr value on there. Can someone tell me what I can do, besides doing a fresh install?

Thanks

So yesterday automatic Windows update installed IE10, today I noticed that links in certain applications open in IE10 instead of my configured default browser, which every link from this or any other application used to open in before that update and the reboot that followed the update.
I checked the Default Programs section in the system control panel, expecting maybe Microsoft wanted to get themselves in any more trouble with the EU and changing the default to IE. This was not the case however, all the associations were still pointing to the configured default browser, I noticed however I could not uncheck the defaults already set.
So despite the obvious configuration being correct, links would still open in IE10 even after yet another reboot.
I went ahead and checked the registry associations, and found that http(s) protocol as well as htm(l) filetypes were associated with Internet Explorer with various EditFlags set (presumably to prevent changing them through the user interface, or to ignore the user interface settings).

Seriously Microsoft? Don't you have enough trouble yet?

Hey,
I am running a 4 year old home built PC. I'm a complete newbie at working on my PC. If I run into issues I generally just google search or accept it. However I thought I might give it my best effort to make my computer run at it's best. (I have other issues other than this but whatever)
I just did a clean install of Windows 8.1 on my SSD and I was wondering if I could get advice on important drivers and such, I have already been to AMD and updated those drivers.

I used TweakBit Driver updater to check for which drivers were out of date but not to update them (I don't trust third party driver installers) I guess I'm wondering if all of these are important or if I can rely on the information that this program gave me, or if I should even bother updating these drivers at all seeings as everything seems to be working 'fine'.

My Motherboard is: ASRock H61M/U3S3

A:I'm looking for advice on if I need to update drivers

Why not go straight to the main man, the ASRock support site and download your drivers from there.

After doing that you can go to the various hardware component manufactuerers and possibly update the drivers for those components, but if things are working correctly it is not really necessary.

Driver updating applications, including MS updates sometimes gets your hardware wrong, sometimes older drivers are better than the latest ones. This has applied to every PC/Laptop I have had.

Hello Yvesj,

Since it's a Microsoft program, they will of course have it be able to be updated through Windows Update as well as manually through the program. It doesn't really matter which option you use to update the program since it will only update from either or and not both for that specific update.

You could also set Windows Updates to not show updates for "other Microsoft programs" by unchecking that option under "Microsoft Update to not have them there.

Windows Update - Windows Automatic Updating

If you have MSE set to run on a schedule, then you may also have it set to check and install updates then as well.

Hope this helps,

We just purchased a Dell Optiplex GX280 with Windows XP Pro for the family. After getting it connected to our wireless network and the internet I figured the next logical step would be to download MS updates for it. WRONG.

I've had to resort to the Restore Wizard twice now to take the system back to before the two times I've tried updating. Both times I updated and got Internet Explorer 7, IE began to misbehave and shut down everytime I tried another website besides the homepage (even going to Microsoft.com!). I got that lovely error message about "sorry but this program has to shut down, etc., etc."

After the little I've gleened from the Internet (on my Vista laptop) these updates are causing many problems with IE. Should I even bother? Do I let them update everything but IE?

Please advise!

Many thanks,

I have 2 computers that I need advice for... my daughters computer I upgraded to Win 7 a few years ago. My old laptop was upgraded to Win 8 on a new SSD a few years ago also. The laptop died (i guess... no post or anything). Now I have an SSD with the Win 8 upgrade, and my daughters computer with Win 7.
I'm thinking I cannot just use the SSD in my daughters machine since it's a different mobo and the Win license won't transfer??? What can I do with the SSD and Win 8 upgrade license? I also want to get my daughters machine upgraded to Win 10. Am I best just to upgrade the Win 7 machine to 10 and bite the bullet on the Win 8 SSD? What a waste of my upgrade license.

A:Update advice on 2 computers.

The Win8 license is only good if it is a retail license. An OEM license died with the system - unless you can talk Microsoft into activating it for another PC. You have a good story with a dead PC.

The SSD you can use as any disk. And if I were you I would stay away from Windows 10.

Hello

My system is a Compaq w/Win 98, 600 Athlon CPU, 192 MB pc100 sdram and a Diamond Stealth III (S540) 16MB AGP video card. I can get the same card now w/32MB memory for $30.00. For reference sake, at the time this card was on the market (circa 1999) the somewhat better competitive card had Nvidia's TNT2 chip. I'm investigating upgrading the video card, looking to spend about $50.00, but I'm flexible.

At this price, it seems to be GeForce2 territory. My question has to do with which is more important: getting the lower end video processor (i.e. GF2 MX) with 64MB memory, or an upper end processor (i.e. GF2 GTS, Visiontek model) with 32MB.

My Mobo is 2.0 AGP compliant but only supports 2x transfer rate, so I'm trying to get the most out of an upgrade that my system can fully take advantage of.

Also, most deals on cards are OEM, which i take to mean a bare card only. What do I do for drivers? Download for manufactures' web site?

Thanks for any advice!

Try opening Command Promt (Run as Admin) and type:

Code:
sfc /scannow
That will find and fix any registry errors that might cause this. If that does not work, then shut down your computer, and boot into the Installation Disk. Select Repair your Computer, and do a repair install.

If none of this works, then let us know.

Hello,

I badly need advice from you techguys. It appears that the graphics driver on my computer needs to be updated, or maybe even completely renewed. My screen wipes out unexpectedly and I recieve a flash of a blue screen. The information I get is that I need to update the seriously malfunctioning driver. It is as follows: NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go (Microsoft Corporation).

After going through the Microsoft steps and also visiting the NVIDIA website a matching driver cannot be found.

Do I finally need to buy a new computer?

A:Graphics Driver Update Advice

If you're looking for an excuse to buy a new computer I don't wanna spoil your party.

But going from a driver problem to a new computer is a big jump. Maybe the driver got updated when it should not have. Or is corrupted. See if you can Roll back the driver (Device Manager - right click on the display adapter - Properties - Driver tab). Any difference?

Try Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking. If you get the same problem I would suspect the card itself rather than the driver.

2x Linksys WRT54GL with Wireless bridge using DD-WRT (1x in back bedroom, 1x in lounge)
2x laptops (wireless), 3x mobiles connected.

But i have recently upgraded to a 100mbps connection and the good old Linksys are just not cutting it anymore, So i am after a replacement system. I am currently looking at ASUS RT-N66U N900 but as this is a fairly pricey router i am trying to work out if this will cut it on its own or if i need to bridge again.

ASUS RT-N66U N900 decent enough on its own?
Different or better router for similar price?
If im bridging can any one suggest a cheaper option?

Cheers in advance for any advice.

Hello all,

Sorry to duplicate my post, but I wasn't sure where to list this.

I had issues last November with what I suspected was a problem with updates for Office 2007 from Microsoft Update.
After a Factory Image reinstall and reloading all my software, everything was humming along nicely.
Then I discovered that my Office wasn't up to date and went over to MS update to pick up the security updates.
I got 20 updates including SP1 for Office.

I have been installing them a few at a time and the last batch included a security update for OneNote 2007 KB950130 and tw security updates for Office KB951944 and KB954326.
When I went to restart, the SAME THING HAPPENED AS IN NOVEMBER. Exactly.

The computer rebooted fine till it got to the point where I sign in and then somewhere in between the welcome screen and the desktop loading, it froze solid.
The little tone that sounds when the desktop loads went into a stutter and then slowly faded.

There was nothing I could do with it so I hard booted into safe mode, where I thought I could system restore (not available in safe mode?) or uninstall the updates (also not available)
On a whim, I tried to restart normally and fortunately it did work, but then my RAID had to repair itself and realign the system information on both drives. This usually takes about 4 hours so I walked away and came back when it was done.

When I came back, I found that when I tried to do anything that involved opening windows, my screen would go blank ... Read more

Hey Peppurr,

It sounds like you are not using Auto update. I say this, because, and I have sometimes wondered about this myself, when Office installs the updates (After a fresh install) on Auto, it downloads as usual, installs as usual and then comes with a message that 2 updates were not necessary and have not been installed. This has happened to me every time I have new installed, and believe me I do it often

I am wondering............ If you check manually, download and install are you installing these two updates, and if you are are they maybe causing your problems??

Hello All,

Several days ago I installed several updates that were identified by the MSI Live update for my machine. One of these updates for the BIOS which I stupidly included (yes I understand now that was a dumb mistake).

After rebooting, I was presented to "please insert boot disk and press any key" so I figured some settings were set incorrectly in the BIOS. After playing around there for awhile and checking the boot order and SATA settings among other things, everything looked fine but I still could not boot to my SSD with Win7. The drive is listed in BIOS but I cannot boot to it. I also manually reset the BIOS configuration by jumping CMOS battery and that did not help either.

After giving up on the BIOS I put in a Ubuntu disk and ran Disk/Memory diagnostics both which returned no issues. At this point I began to suspect an issue with the MBR on the disk so I followed these directions on Tom's Hardware:

How to Fix Windows 7 When It Fails to Boot

Somehow between then and now I think I have managed to put myself in a worse state. The instructions work up to bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd. At this step I see that 1 Windows installation is detected on Drive D, however when prompted to add to the boot list, I enter Y and then get "the requested system device cannot be found". I deleted the bcd file but now I cant get Windows to generate a new one because of this issue.

A:Cant boot/install Win7 to SSD after BIOS update - Need Advice!

The update likely changed the BIOS setting for SATA controller. Preferred is AHCI but it might have been different before BIOS update reset to defaults.

Check also that the HD is set to boot first and that it is detected in BIOS setup and from your boot disk.

If these fail, browse into the HD with your Linux disk to copy out any data externally, then I could set to AHCI to Clean Install Windows 7 .

Here's the problem,
I recently updated the bios for my motherboard. When I rebooted the computer windows said it found new hardware in my computer. It was the sound card. I thought this might be normal, but when I restarted the computer after that it would redetect the hardware (like it keeps forgetting it's there) So I reinstalled win2k, that fixed the sound card problem, but now everytime it reboots it "forgets" about my modem and tv tuner card and I have to reinstall them each time. Also, even though I set the video card to 600x800 res. it resets to 640x480 every time.

By the way, I also have win98 installed and it still runs perfectly. And one more thing: It won't let me reinstall the original bios.

Pleeeeaaaase help me,
I really have to get this working ... fast.

Thanks

A:{Advice Offered} - bios update screwed up win200

Greetings

Ok, you can try this:

Open up your registry, and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet

And delete the entire ENUM key. Then reboot. This will force Win2K to redetect ALL your hardware and install the drivers for each component.

Make sure you have the drivers for all your components before you try this (those components that were autodetected by Win2K when it was installed will be autodetected again, so if any components have an updated driver installed, it will need to be re-installed when you get back into your system).

Good Luck

Hey, guys. I'm new here and I could really use some advice or basically whatever you can tell me. If this question has already been asked, then I apologize. I did a search for it and couldn't find anything, though.

Okay, basically, at around 5 a.m. this morning my Windows (I have a Compaq running Windows XP Media Edition) decides to run the typical automatic Windows updates, were it eventually comes to the Windows blue loading screen (like when you first log-in) and previously, these automatic updates have finished with no problems at all, with relatively fast loading time. But this time around, it seems to be stuck or atleast loading very slowly...it's been at "Updates are being installed (3 of 3)..." for 7 hours now. I'm not sure what to do about this...if I should just wait it out, or turn off my computer. Because it's also telling me "Do not turn off your computer; it will turn off automatically." so I don't want to end up killing my entire system or something, since I didn't get a chance to back up all my files this morning before it tried to update.

I've heard some horror stories from friends saying they waited up to 12 hours for it to finish, and other's saying they just shut it off and it ended up ruining their system.

Given those two options, obviously, I would wait...But, I could really use some advice on what I should do here. Do I have any other options?

I have a Samsung laptop a few years old - Core i7, 2TB HDD, 8gb Memory. It was supplied with Windows 7 and I have the W7 installation dvd that came with it.

Over the years I have booted from this DVD and re-installed a fresh copy of W7 several times with no problems whatsoever.

A few months ago I succumbed and upgraded to Windows 10 - no problems - it all ran fine.

I wanted to go back to W7 so I deleted all partitions on the HDD, booted from the W7 DVD as usual. Selected country:UK and created a new partition on the HDD (whole of the HDD). Files were copied to the HDD in the usual manner, Windows 7 installed up to 100%, then onto features etc. The installation went with no problems up to the fourth step - installing updates. I though it was a few seconds away from completion and re-boot. However, I then got the message 'Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration'.

Repeated several times, deleting and re-creating partition on the disk but the same happened.

In the end, I installed Windows 10 on the HDD by booting from a USB stick with W10 on and it installed no problems.

Anyone got any idea what it going on? It looks like my install of W10 has changed the disk somehow so W7 cannot ever be installed again on the disk.

I have an old P3 system that I let my son use for internet browsing, email, etc. It has been rock solid for 6+ years until lately and I think the issue of not booting properly is that the master CD-ROM gave up the ghost. And so I took that out hoping that is all it will take.

Here is my question (and I feel so much like a noob; I did try to google but I got nothing): Where do I place the tab to take it from slave to single configuration? As slave the tab was placed on the far left in the verticle position. Am I correct in that to make it singular I need to place it horizontally on the bottom two prongs center-right?

I hope I am making myself clear. This is an old system and it has been years since setting it up and I don't have my manuals anywhere. I couldn't even access Buslink's website.

Thanks for your help.

A:CD-RW Configuration - from slave to single configuration?

The jumper will fit on the pins, based on what is imprinted or embossed on the drive. It is usually very difficult to see... but if you use a flashlight or other device you can place at different angles, you can see how the jumper choices are stamped into the metal. Most often the center two are Slave, the right is Master, and the left is Cable Select.
I suggest you jumper it as master.
If it is a known brand, you can find a drawing on the website of the optical drive manufacturer.

Hello my friends
I am sick of Windows Update and want to remove it from my machine. I do not care about receiving updates and see it as a sort of malware - I don't trust it.
But when I try to delete wuauclt in System32 it won't let me - and yes, I am logging in as Admin and yes the process has been ended. So basically, I cannot remove it from my machine.

If you have a solution I would be delighted to hear it.

Many thanks.

Hi all,

I have a MSI k7 pro via kt 266a mobo with an athlon xp1600, served me well, however time has moved on.
1/ MSIs website states the max cpu my mobo can take is xp2100 (upgradeing cpu would be cheapest option). Does anyone know any different?

2/ There are some good "bargains" in mobos, as low as 80 bucks Australian, able to take an AMD 64 3200 , based on SIs chipsets. Of the chipsets available, eg, Sis , Via , nforce, are folk noticing any "real world" difference between them.

I occasionally edit and render video-rendering times not a key consideration and occasionally play Lomac and Il2 flight sims. Thats it. Apart from surf the net.

Your input appreciated. Thanks

A:Advice required for mobo update or mobo replacement

i just bought an ecs N2U400-A MB, i already had a couple xtra processors so i didnt need to get the combo, but if I had got the combo, i beleive it came with an athlon xp 2400+ for around $100 american. so far i am very happy with the quality and performance of this new board. BTW, it is an nFORCE2 board

I haven't changed any settings since I got my laptop in Nov. However, for the last two weeks, everytime I boot it up, I get an "instant update" which seems to be for WinXP. There is a small, four-part-color shield which goes along with the update. Before I can get any work done, the computer asks me if I would like to re-start my computer.

Question: Is this some kind of bug? Of course, I don't want to re-start my computer every time after I have just booted it up.

A:{Advice offered} - Advice needed

Greetings

My advice: Go in on a weekend and re-install everything

Ok, now onto more practical advice:

Firstly, get a picture of the network. This means getting a floorplan of the buildings, walking around going from room to room, and writing down the number of PCs, the software OS (and service pack level, if applicable) installed, current hardware installed and the router they connect to.

Do the same for your servers. It is vitally important to know what hardware is in each PC, and what the specs of the PC are.

Next, you need to get a Logical map of your network. This is a picture of the IP addresses of the Routers, printers and servers (and workstations, if you are not using DHCP), and where the different subnet's are situated. You need to see what services are installed on your Servers (WINS, DNS, DHCP, IIS, Proxy etc). At this time, it is also a good idea to get a list of the accounts on the Server. You need to see which accounts are being used to run certain services, and make sure that only Service accounts are running those services. Next, you need to take away any user accounts that no longer correspond to people using the system (ie. if Mr Bradshaw last worked at the school 5 years ago, it is time to delete his user account). Ditto with any user home drives assigned to defunct users.

Lastly, you need to compile a list of discepancies. Look at your list created in the forst step, and get an idea of what a standard PC is (ie: Standard PC = at least Pent 200,... Read more

I need to theoretically network 4 PC computers for a class. The computers are currently running Win95. The specs of the computers are:

486/25 MHz processor, 80 MB hard drive, 8 MB RAM

486/66 MHz processor, 120 MB hard drive, 16 MB RAM

Pentium 75 MHz Processor, 120 MB hard drive, 16 MB RAM

Pentium 133 MHz processor, 1 GB hard drive, 32 MB RAM

Security is not important. Trying to find an inexpensive solution. The users will not be technical wizards.

Questions - What type of network would you recommend and why? What role would you assign to each of the four workstations and any other equipment you recommend? What type of upgrades might the workstations require to make your solution work?

please help me, thank you

A:{Advice Offered} - need advice for network

Well, I would put in one NIC per computer, use standard Windows 95 peer to peer networking. I would try to upgrade all machines to at least 32 meg RAM, but 16 would do if I couldn't manage 32.

Hell, I guess 8 would work, but it sure would be slow.

I would go with CAT5 patch cables and a small, inexpensive hub, to physically connect the machines. You could use BNC (coax type) cable and skip the hub, but hubs are so cheap now that I don't think that is a good idea.

As for roles - put all the shared files on the P133 since it has the most space and is the fastest.

Hello all.
Running windows 10 pro 64 bit.
I've updated from Version 1511 to the anniversary update, 1607.
Or at least, I thought I did.
The update went well, no hiccups, no errors. Used windows update, let it downloaded and install and rebooted. Alas, system still shows OS Version 1511.
Used update again, same thing, rebooted, 1511.
Went to the windows site, downloaded the windows10upgrade9252.exe, ran it, same exact issue, rebooted, still showing version 1511.
Error logs show no issues. Disabled all external drives, turned off anti-virus, etc, repeated, rinsed, rebooted, still version 1511.
Only think I've not done is burned an ISO to DVD and updated from that.
Any clues as to what's going on?
Thanks!

Our office is currently running a NT4 peer-to-peer network. It includes four worksations and an FTP server. I am wondering about the pros/cons of migrating to a server based network.

I am proficient with TCP/IP and WNT4 Workstation. Would NT Server be a tremendous difference?

A:{Advice Offered} - Need advice on migrating from peer-to-peer

Greetings

If the server is a Domain Controller, then it wioll be different. If you run it as a member ser, then you will still be in a workgroup mode.

Ok, if it is a domain controller then the difference is that you will have centralised accounts. You only need to create an account on the server, and then it can be used on any of the workstations. All the sercurity is centralised, to the accounts created on the server.

As far as a 4 workstation network goes, this is the main difference.

Cheers

I am trying to update from Windows 10 OS Build 10586.589 to the Anniversary Update but my computer freezes at 1% progress. I have tried everything I can think of including: Unplugging all extra SATA drives except my main SSD, unplugging my wireless network adapter, unplugging all USB devices (even mouse and keyboard), removing old drivers and updating outdated ones, and installing the update through a USB flash drive. It always gets to the same part and freezes until I shutdown my computer and lose no data.

You can see pictures of the frozen screen here: http://imgur.com/a/PseoH.

nowadays, neither norton nor malwarebytes are considered top protection.

Hello!

Let's jump right into it.
I am unable to connect to the internet, and I can't figure out why.
In Google Chrome, it says "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET". My network icon has a yellow triangle.
I connect through LAN with an ethernet cable. I don't have admin access to my router. It is a LinkSys and I can successfully view the login page through 192.168.1.1 . I am using Windows 7.
My friend's computer, when plugged into the same ethernet port, has zero problems. I tried different ethernet cables and the problem persisted.
This happens with both my PC and laptop. I use an ethernet switch to connect both of them to one wall port. Of course I have tried plugging each of them in directly. The problem persists.

When I reboot my computer, new networks appear randomly and seem to stop when it hits "Network 4". Seems like it fails to remember the old network that it was on.. (see pic in next post)

Automatic troubleshooting is unable to identify any problem.

I have since tried merging the network locations and, using an elevated command prompt, running:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /all
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew
netsh int ip set dns
netsh winsock reset

and then restarting my computer. This worked for one day until I restarted again. The same fix no longer works.

I have also tried disabling my antivirus and Windows Firewall to no avail.

I booted in Safe Mode with Networking and the same connectivity problems persisted. This sho... Read more

A:XPS 15 configuration

Hello!  You won't be able to see the SSD because its a cache drive.  The computer uses Intel's Rapid Response or Rapid Storage system to cache frequently used files and programs onto the 32GB Cache drive for faster access.  In terms of upgrading it to a bigger drive, I've heard people doing it on the desktops that use it but i'm not entirely sure at the moment what type of drive it is (m.2, pcie, etc. ).

For whatever reason, I have to reset the video configuration each time I open the player for a movie, because it will not retain those settings once the player is closed.

This caused me to look for a means of setting these value permanently. I found two files that are involved to an extent....vlcrc and the vlc-qt-interface.ini. The former appears to be a fairly large file with a lot of options, but almost every line is preceded with a #, with I assume means that it is commented out. Scrolling through the "options", I didn't find anything so as I could set contrast, brightness, hue, saturation or gamma.

The latter file appears to be a more active file, but is much, much more brief, and I don't see anything that I need there either.

Does anyone really understand how these could be used to accomplish what I want?

A:VLC Configuration

It happens with me as well. Everytime I reopen VLC to play any media, it will never retain any settings. I guess that's how its designed to work.

I have an assignment to design and build a network. There is one router with ethernet interfaces only. One interface services the LAN. An external user (PC) is directly connected to the other ethernet interface. The external user will have an IP address different to the LAN. The task is to implement a NAT to allow the external user to access the LAN and LAN users to access the external user. I will be learning about NAT in several weeks but my need is right now. I have researched NAT and cannot find anything helpful. Does anyone have a solution to my problem.

I know the security configuration i present is not satisfactory at all. But as the Windows is genuine and Automatic Update is ON, should I be panicked?

Please feel free to suggest.

A:New Configuration

In my Opinion, you need not panic...Many people use Windows Defender and manage to avoid danger.
If it was me I would like to add software like ..Sandboxie,VoodooShield,and a light AV/AM like Crystal Security.

TP-LINK 54M Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router (4mbs)

I have only one internet connection and 4 computers using the same connection (2 wireless and 2 wired).
I have a problem when I play Counter-Strike 1.6 and someone else is using the internet. My ping jumps over 200, and sometimes over 500, but when I'm the only one using the net my ping is under 20 and on some servers under 10.

Is there a way to configure the QoS so I can play CS without disturbance and not to mess the internet for others.
I was thinking if there is a way to configure it so I always have at least 1.5 mbs at my disposal.

I'm not very good at these kind of stuff, but could someone tell me the painless and best solution for this , I would be very grateful. Thanks

And, btw, sorry for my bad English, it isn't my native language

I'm considering to buy the new Abit KX7-333 mobo soon which has 4 DIMM slots and i wanted to know, would there be a difference if i bought 4 x 128mb PC2100 DDR DIMMS compared to 2 x 256mb in performance in relation to "memory interleaving options"?

The 128mb is slightly cheaper the 256mb version by about £5 each and PC2700 is too expensive and not worth it atm.

A:DDR RAM Configuration

The only difference I've seen is that when you decide you want to double the memory again, you'll have to replace all the modules rather than just adding two more. Otherwise I haven't ever seen or read of any performance gain or loss from either option. I haven't seen any test results of any comparisons either. Then again I never really thought about it as I've always tried and recommended going for the two stick option rather than four so it is easier and cheaper to upgrade the RAM later.

Is this a good configuration?
Celeron 2.66GHz possibly overclocked to 3GHz
2.5GB RAM
Leadtek 9600GT 512MB
37.3GB HDD
Windows 7 64-BIT Ultimate

If the graphics is a problem, it would be best to use an 8500gt instead.

Or I could get:
core 2 duo 1.86GHz E6300
3GB RAM DDR2
Leadtek 9600 GT 512MB
37.3GB HDD
Windows 7 64-bit ultimate

A:PC Configuration

In my opinion, nothing with a Celeron processor could be a good configuration.
