Has the start menu changed in a recent update?

Q: Has the start menu changed in a recent update?

Hiya guys,
I've just done a fresh install of Windows 10 on a new build.
I noticed there are a couple of bits I can't seem to get back to how they were before, last time it was the free upgrade from win7, this time it was a clean install via windows 10 media creation tool.

I've attached a screenshot of how my start menu looks now, before reinstalling I had the power, settings and file explorer at the bottom of the start menu as a list, along with 'all apps', which would open the A-Z list of apps.
As you can see now, the power etc are now icons on the left, with all the apps as a permanent presence next to them.

It's not a huge issue, but something that's frustrating me that I can't figure out how to change it back, I don't launch apps from the A-Z so i'd rather not have it there.

Has this changed in a recent update or something? My PC was without internet for a few months until today so maybe I missed a change.

I have checked and I have the latest build of windows.

Thanks, Mark.

Today I updated my Nvidia driver and rebooted my machine. Everything seemed to go well. I did not receive any errors.

When I opened my start menu I noticed that some programs that I almost never use anymore were my only recent programs. I then opened a program that use often that was not listed. I then opened a file and then closed the program. Even though there was room on the recent programs area the application was not showing up.

After some searching around I saw people talk about their two check boxes on the privacy section of the start menu options being grayed out. I checked mine and they we checked and were enabled. Other forum posts said to uncheck them restart and the re-check them. I did this but to no avail. I was deciding to just live with it as pinning to the start menu still works.

I started pinning my most important apps and opening a file to make sure that the recent files jump menu was showing up. It works for all applications except Microsoft applications. I added MS Excel to my pinned list and opened a recent file (that shows up in the apps recent files section) then saved it and closed Excel. When I opened my start menu again Excel still lacks a jump menu for recent apps.

Any help on this will be appreciated.

After a recent compulsory update (13th Dec) to Windows 10, my start menu won't open by clicking on the icon or by the windows key. The search button also doesn't respond. All programs previously pinned to the taskbar no longer appear, even when open (making alt-tabbing the only way to switch windows). The clock/date and volume controls normally in the bottom right corner also don't appear. I've tried the powershell fix found on a couple of posts:
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

but after initializing it doesn't seem to do much more.

Any help greatly appreciated!!

Hi Friends ! I am back with a new query.
All the video clips I play with VLC or Media Center, all the archives I extract with Winrar, all the web-pages I open with firefox are listed in start menu. whenever I click on start menu and place the pointer on those applications, the fool start menu expands and shows the previously used files as "Recent". I dont want them to be there. It is boring to remove them one by one. I know that a little trick in the privacy tab it the WMP keeps the Windows Media Player link in start menu free from "recent"s. Is there any trick to do the same for the applications viz.
1. Firefox
2. VLC Media player
3. Windows Media Center?
Thanks in advance. Archan.

I noticed this a few days after having to restore my drive from a True Image backup. Maybe related, or maybe coincidence:

Running Win 7 Professional. I currently have 5 "recent" programs listed in my Start Menu (not pinned). I have Properties set to show 15 recent programs. When I run a program from the Start Menu (not the "recent programs," but the full list) or from Explorer (navigate to program and double-click the exe file), the program does not get added to the list. The only recently run programs being added are ones I run from Desktop shortcuts. I know this is not normal behavior; my laptop, also running Win 7 Professional, adds recent programs regardless of how they're launched.

This is going to nag me until I get it fixed. Anyone know the solution?

Hmmm... not only that, but if I delete the Desktop shortcut, the item disappears from the Recent Programs list.

In Windows XP when you click on start you should be able to see the most active opened files show up on a list.

For some reason mine isn't working. Nothing shows up except for the pinned items like Internet Explorer and Outlook.

I checked the settings and it should show 6 of the most used programs. I also checked to make sure the prefetch directory was functioning and it is and I also made sure the dcom and support services were running which they were.

How cn I fix this because I find it handy having links of my most used files that I use. I would rather not pin them to the start menu if possible.

Any help would be greatful

When you say '..mine isn't working.', do you mean that 'My Recent Documents' doesn't show up on the Start Menu? Or that 'My Recent Documents' is displayed but doesn't show you anything.

In any case, I only can guide you to where the control for it is.

Right click on Start -> Properties -> Start Menu tab -> Customize -> Advanced tab -> check the Check Box under the Recent Documents section.

Hope that helps.

Hi all!

About a year ago, my pinned IrfanView icon in the start menu stopped showing recent documents. The "arrow button" was still there, indicating that there should be some documents to display, but none showed up. Even the pinned documents were gone. When I opened new documents with the program, the list failed to repopulate.

I made a thread here. There were no solutions. In time, I learned to accept that images couldn't be accessed via Start Menu.

Now, yesterday the same problem occurred with Adobe Reader. I had an occurrence of the Adobe Reader crashing around the time this issue became evident.

In summary, this seems more like a Windows issue, not a bug of an individual program.

I have not cleared or turned recent items off and on. Clear recent items on exit is turned off. I don't log off often. Other recent documents work as they should.

How can I fix this?

Thanks!

Hello Higgins,

It sounds like some sort of issue with your jump lists. You could use the tutorial below to reset and clear jump lists to see if that may help. If you like, create a restore point before doing this. This way you could do a system restore back if it doesn't help, or you do not like the results.

Does the Recent Items in Windows' Star Menu give preference to Microsoft software?

Let me rephrase that, does it avoid populating the list with Apple software?

I uninstalled Internet Explorer as soon as Windows finished installing and made Safari my only browser, since I'm still downloading stuff to install I barely close the browser and it still doesn't appear in the list. I cleared completely the list the kept using Safari and iTunes, nope, nothing, there were nowhere to be seen.

I opened Notepad and Paint and they were instantly on the list, I installed Google Chrome, removed it from the list and reopened the program and there it was.

I know it's not a bug in Apple software 'cause my other computers have these programs on the list, Safari, iTunes, AirPort Utility, you name it. Yes, I know I can just pin them to the top, but that's not the point... I just wished I wouldn't have to use for a month Windows before the make it to the list, this kind of popularity contest sucks. LOL.

Barely closing the browser means you're barely opening it, too. I always thought that list goes by the number of times you open a program, and maybe even where from (shortcut, Explorer, etc.). Could be that?

First of all I'd like to say a big Hello to everyone as this is my first post here. I've had a quick look around and this looks like a great forum... can't believe I've not come accross this until now. :)

So, my problem is with the start menu in Windows 7 x64. There are no recently used programs displayed on the far left column it's just a blank white space.

I've done some searching and most solutions advise me to right click the start menu and look in the Properties--> Customise menu and check the 'Number of recent programs to display' has a number in the box to the right and then I should see the list populate in the start menu.

This however is not the case, the number is the default (10) but nothing shows up in the start menu. I've also attempted to 'Use Default Settings' but to no avail...

If some bright spark knows what I'm doing wrong I'd love to hear from you.

Many thanks,

Mike

I right clicked on one of the items and said 'remove from this list'. I was under the impression that each program has a score that starts at zero and increases the more you use a program - and that when you 'remove from this list' it just sets the counter back to zero.

I removed this item a long time ago and I use it very frequently but it hasnt showed up on the list again. How can I get it back?

I'm guessing it's a permissions issue but I can't seem to figure it out. Can someone help me out? Thanks!

When I left click on the start ball I see displayed "recent items". When I left click on that it shows a list of my documents in alphabetical order.

I would like this list to show in date order. At somepoint it use to show in date order, but some how it got changed.

I can use explorer and see my recent documents folder and order it in date order.

The "recent items" make for a quick way to recall a document I was working on. The alphabetical list is worthless as it only shows about 15 items.

Another thing that seem to have disappeared is when I right click on "recent items" there is NO option to clear the list.

I suspect that some update from windows has caused things to quit working as before. But unable to determine which one it was.

Any help out there?

A:Windows 7 recent items start menu odd problem

Personally I'd be annoyed if task-bar-pinned applications appeared in the Start Menu Recent list. If I wanted one of them I'd just select it from the Task Bar. Sorry, but I don't know how to get one to appear in both places.

That list, in my observation, is not simply the most recently used applications. What appears there is based also on amount of usage. If you frequently go to Windows Update it should stay there, and even move towards the top with enough usage.

As you can see in the attachment, whenever I hover over any recent program in the Start Menu that doesn't have an arrow, the background image appears with 2 different colors. I was tinkering with aero.msstyles, but I don't know how to fix this, and I'd really prefer not to start customizing over again. I believe the image #s (w/ ResHack) dealing with recent programs in the Start Menu are 795-802, but I think there may be another image that is causing the weird background image.

I've uploaded the aero.msstyles file here: http://www.**************/?oj645dh4n0oiqpo (mediafire)

The #s are the same as the default unchanged aero.msstyles
I'd greatly appreciate any help with this theme.

Soryy if this has been discussed before.

I'm running Win 7 ultimate 64 bit version.

Under Vista in the start menu list of recently opened items, those items were sort by their open/access frequncy, top to bottom.

For instance, if you opened Word 10 times a day on average, and firefox 5 times etc. eventually Word would advance towards the top of the list, above firefox which had been opened less times.

It seems this doesnt take place in windows 7 FOR CERTAIN ITEMS ONLY: let's say i play solitaire 15 times a day, well, it gets into the list, but stays at the bottom of the list no matter how many times i close and open it again, it's sitll at the bottom of the list, instead if i click just twice on, say, excell, it immediately gets above solitaire - isnt that strange behaviour?

I have both "store and display..." boxes checked in start menu properties.

I tried changing StartMenuInit key (from the vista tutorial) from 4 to 3, but after restart it reverts back to 4.

Has Microsoft chosen to exclude games from the recent items list ?

Thank you for your patience

Hi guys. I've had this program for a couple of months, but i've been wanting to turn it back on and i can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong. I use ccleaner, tweak UI, aulosgic bootspeed before to mess with settings to make my computer faster. I'm running xp with only 2gb of ram, and i need all the memory i can get for when i mess with audio production programs.
Now, since doing searches on google, i've turned off and on the recent document list after clicking on properties on top of start menu > properties > start menu > customize > advance. That didn't work. I went into the registry to see if StartMenuInit and it's set to 2. NoStartMenuMFUprogramslist is set to 1 i heard to make sure NoInstrumentation is also set to 1.
I've cleared the list in both places in the customize menu properties sections ( general+advanced)
I went in TweakUI, CCleaner and Auslogic to make sure all the options for that kind of thing would be on or off. And it's all looking like it should've been displaying but it's not. I don't know what else to do. Does anyone have any idea? I did a search on this site, and it didn't really go anywhere.
Thanks a lot if you can help me.

I'm not an expert, don't know the language, sorry. I am a long-time user, though. I'd upgraded to Win-10 back in summer, hated it, and restored back to Win-7. But I lost my recent items list. Or rather, the pinned applications' recent items list, for example, for Excel, or Word, or any of them. I waited to see if they would repopulate as I used the programs, but they haven't done so. It would be nice to have that back, if possible.
Thank you for any advice -
Rita C

A:Start menu lost applications' recent items, after Win-7 restore

More -- I just tried the solutions offered in the similar threads, setting the recent items number to 0, and then back to 10. Some of them are now working, but still not Excel or Word. Weird. But I can live with that! Thanks, all, I'm marking this resolved.
Happy Monday, Rita C

4) i disabled the context menu and rebooted.

Hello,

I recently installed some windows updates on July 9th/10th (KB890830 Malacious Software Removal Tool & KB955020 update) and also installed a new game (GRID), and have since had a funny issue...

When I right click on any of my "Recent Items" in my start menu (to say clear them from the list) Vista loads for a few seconds, then i get the message: "Windows Explorer has stopped working...looking for a solution" and then it says: "Windows Explorer is restarting". From there everything loads back up as if my comp just booted up. Nothing else in my start menu causes this if I right click or otherwise do anything else.

I have two hard drives, and my game i installed is on my second HD which is dedicated to just house games. My primary C drive is just for core files and things like that, so I really don't know if the game caused it, though I mentioned it because in reading many other problems similar it is what you recently install that can cause this error.

Is there any fix for this that someone might know? If you need my DirectXDiag, let me know, but I don't think it is necessary at this time...

Thanks for any help in advance,

Andrew

A:[SOLVED] Right Click on Recent Items (Start Menu) Crashes Win. Explorer

It seems the "Right-Click" error also occurs when I right click on files in my hard drives...usually applications it seems. Texts/Docs don't cause the Explorer crash. It seems to be a shell extension crash, but I'm not sure what is causing this.

I have ESET NOD32 antivirus installed, but again, this never happened before last night prior to the two windows updates and the new game install.

Hey all, after using AlienwareGUI for a while to swap to a theme I uninstalled it after a while. The result made the IE icon on the start menu the IE6 icon. I've gone to the quick launch IE icon and changing that icon back to IE7 but it still didn't fix the start menu one. Anyone know how to get it back?

And yeah, doesn't look like much of a problem but I go nuts about it. Probably because im a perfectionist and every other IE icon has the IE7 one. <_<

Currently my setup (corporate network) uses the setting:
User Configuration\AdministrativeTemplates\Start Menu & Taskbar\Remove common program groups from Start Menu
As its a multiple user environment we don't want all users seeing all available applications on the server their accessing (Citrix XenApp environment). We use AppSense to manage shortcuts.
As a result of using this GPO setting, users Recent Programs on the Start Menu no longer show. That's the ability for the user click on Notepad, it appears on the Start Menu and retains on logoff.
Is it possible to enable recent programs only, or a manual tweak or setting a registry key for recent programs only, without disabling "Remove common program groups from Start Menu"

This is pretty self-explanatory.Run in Admin does not kick in when launching a file via a Taskbar's pinned app icon, even when the pinned app has been set to 'Run in Admin' mode (under Properties -> Advanced). The same thing happens in the Start Menu -- the app can be set (Properties -> Advanced) to Run in Admin mode, and the file does not launch this way.Why is this a problem?  Because if one is supposed to use accounts like MS asks, then running as a standard user after having a file created in an admin account, that user cannot alter the doc in any way -- no saves work.  At least this is true for files not on the C partition.  The only way W7 permits saves is to run an app in Admin mode.(I've run into this countless times in the span of a few days with Notepad & PSPad.)If the W7 team wants to insist that docs won't automatically run in Admin mode under these conditions (which they should!!!!!!), then at least give users a right-click context menu option to Run as Admin from the recent/pinned items list.  Currently there is no such context menu option.Thereby, all recent items / pinned items are rendered a useless feature.....Still loving this OS.a.k.a.

A:Taskbar & Start Menu Bug: App Shortcuts set to Run as Admin don't open pinned/recent files in RaA

You want a non-admin user to run a restricted operation. You can easily set the CMD icon to it's Properties to always 'run as administrator'. You can open any app 'as admin' with it. The non-admin user, however could not approve the dialog to open CMD and run an app.Rating posts helps other users

I ran CCleaner and I checked the box that said "Menu Order Cache." Before I did it, it warned me that my start menu would be reset and that custom ordering would be lost.

Now that I've done that, it doesn't show the recent programs at all in the list. I thought by 'reset' it meant that it would just clear the cache, and as I go along it would create a new one. I didn't know that it would permanently erase everything and that it would just be blank.

Is there a way to make this work like it did before (show the recent programs that I've opened)? Do I have to go to a backup, and will that even work?

Thank you,
Brad

A:Blank list in my recent items area in the start menu, how do I make it work?

Hi Psychotron!!!

Actually, what you did is just a simple thing, its nothing to worry about. As you go on using your computer once again, all the files that you accessed will be listed again in the Recent Items. You don't have to do anything now, you can continue using your computer like usual now, and try to see the recent item list after a while. You can see the list grown once again

Hope the description helps

Previously when I would click on the start button, the menu that appeared would reach about half way up the screen. Today, however, it goes all the way to the top of the screen. I checked the buttons properties and all there is as it has always been plus the menu has the same amount of icons on it as usual. Also, the "Most Used Programs" part of the menu is blank after every reboot.

Can anyone shed some light as to what is going on?

Cheers.

Hello everyone.
Today I tried Windows 10... it's not bad at all but for the moment I prefer to stick with Windows 7.
So I downgraded and everything is fine a part from a small detail in the start menu...

As you can see my Windows 7 is in Italian but there are three entries that are in English.
Documents-Pictures-Music instead of Documenti-Immagini-Musica.
All the settings in control panel are on "Italian" so I don't know why this happened.

Any way to fix it?

Thanks.

Now I have lost all programs and internet connection from the laptop and can't do anything with it.
Questions: Do I need to do something easy to bring it back (I tried system restore ) It doesn't have anything I can find to restore it to.
Question: Would I need to reload windows 7? or can I do it an easier way.

Hi folks,

I recently ran into frustration trying to save or make new any files in the root C:\ directory, with Windows7 Home Premium being set by default, of course, to not allow this. I did a cursory skim of some information online about changing these settings, and made some changes a bit hastily. Specifically, for the C:\ drive I took ownership of every subdirectory and gave my account full permissions under security. Annoyingly, this didn't fix the original issue of saving to that drive (which I no longer care about anyway), and it caused (at least) two new problems. Now my start menu has far fewer listings than it used to have; I imagine some programs were listed in it based on the previous permissions. I tried to do a system recovery, both through the OS and with a recovery disc, and that does not work either. It lists restore points, but after restarting it says that the restore was unable to complete.

So, my questions are thus:

Can I fix the permissions and ownership of just the restore directory and program components, enough to run one, and revert?

Or, failing that, is there a way to undo recent ownership changes made? I poked around in the Event Viewer, but it's not laid out very clearly.

It's ok if it's not possible or easy to do it this way; I can grab just my vital files and completely reinstall Windows if it's absolutely necessary, but it seems excessive. I doubt the system restore files are corrupted. More, let's say, confuse... Read more

Hello,

When my pc restarted after a windows update (Windows 7 64 bit), Windows 7 would not restart. The auto repair utility was unable to make repairs although I am able to use it to get to DOS and see my drives, folders, files etc.

It seems like the C: drive (solid state 58gb) is now named the D: drive and the former D: drive (500gb internal) is now named C:

The problem signature states:
Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline
Problem Signature 01 and 02: 6.1.7600.16385

I have been able to put in a bootable AVG disk and scan the drive for viruses (none found), but when I put in a Bart disk, I get the BSOD.

I also found a link showing how to set the disk partition to active for the 58gb solid state boot drive, but still could not auto repair.

Any suggestions are welcome. The repair factility can't find recover points (probably because it can't find the operating system).

A:Start menu with All Programs first and Recent programs second

Not that I know of, but I know that there are ways to make it easier to start the program. My favorite way is by pinning it to the Taskbar or even to the Start Menu. The first 10 items on the Taskbar starting from the left are accessible by pressing Windows Key + 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. all the way up to 0. Pressing Windows Key + 0 accesses the 10th item. The rest can be given Shortcut Keys.

Another is by simply opening the Start Menu, typing the name of the program (or even just the first few letters), and then pressing Enter - or using the arrow keys to select it first if necessary.

Another way is to make it so that as soon as your mouse cursor touches All Programs, it's the same as clicking it. I'm talking about a 0ms menu delay for the mouse which is done in the Registry.

A:What is this Bontio start menu update

Zigzag,
I did check the terms, that`s where I got the name Bontio. Upon further investigation, I found that it is part of the program developed by "Pokki". On my computer it`s got a few entries, host app service, Lenovo web start, & start menu.
reference website to what this is for>
http://www.pokki.com/windows-8-start-menu
From this I believe it modifies the start menu to show apps, and was put on here by Lenovo. Only have had this computer a month. Thought I`d check sense this is all new to us using 8.1.
Some websites say you can uninstall it with out any problems.
Any help along with keeping it or uninstalling it would be appreciated. But right now I`m I know what it is now, and will click ok, but with out the browser modification it suggest.
Thanks to all

The list now is full of application shortcuts.
When I open a new application that is not on the list, the shortcut of the app may or may not appear on the list, does anyone know why?

Go to the Start and see if you have Microsoft Update. If so it should take you to the same web site. Please get back with results.

Did a fresh install of Windows 8.1 Update 1 from a TechNet ISO. Trying to figure out how to activate the new Start menu. I click on Start and get the the Start screen, click on the Start button and get the same. Gone through a few settings when I right click the task bar, properties and I don't see anything obvious in there.

I know I'm on Update 1 since I can minimize Metro apps.

If you're thinking of the proposed 'new' Start Menu, it may be coming later this year.

Hi there. I'm running Windows 8 Pro with Start8 and wanted to pin Windows update to the start menu so I wouldn't have to open the control panel and scroll down to open the update window. I was able to right click on the link in the control panel to pin it to the start menu but for some reason it doesn't stay pinned and for the life of me I can't find the actual exe file to pin. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get this feature returned or is this just one more of Microsofts "We know better than you" features they removed from Windows 8?

A:Problem pinning Update to start menu

Hello Woody,

If you like, you can use the Windows Update shortcut in the tutorial below in Windows 8, and be able to "Pin to Start" or use where you like.

Okay, first off let me say that this post has two separate issues but I post them together because I'm not sure if they're related or not.

Problem 1
Let me start off with a description of what's happened. I purchased a new Dell laptop over the summer (running Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1) and everything was fine. But as I started to download some programs, I realized that not all of them were listed in the Start Menu's "All Programs" folder (for this example, I chose to demonstrate it with CCleaner).

I have yet to pick up a pattern as to what programs make it into "All Programs" and what programs do not. What's even weirder is what happens when I type into the Start Menu's Search Bar. When I partially type up the name of a program that is not in "All Programs", there are no results.

But when I type the name in its entirety (as in the full "CCleaner"), the program is found. However, when I try to open CCleaner from there, I get an error saying it cannot find the program's exe.

And as you can see in the window 'C', the program is definitely installed and works just fine when trying to open it.

Problem 2
"Recent" jump lists aren't working either for some programs (Microsoft Word for example). I can right-click my pinned Windows Explorer and up will come a list of "Recent" folders I've viewed. With Word, all I see listed is "Microsoft ... Read more

A:"All Programs" Start Menu Issue and Recent Items Issue

I also just realized that none of the programs I open "recently" appear in the Start Menu (and yes I have the "Privacy" options set to store and show recent files and programs).

Hi everyone.
I have been pulling my hair out in frustration trying to resolve what may be a lingering problem due to the bleeping Pokki Start Menu Update pop-up that I naively didn't realise was an attack when I switched my Lenovo PC on on Saturday and then when opening Firefox straight after found that it, along with IE and Chrome, had been hijacked with the homepage-web.com redirect.
I followed all the instructions I found here for resolving the homepage-web.com hijack and here for the Start Menu Update and removal of Pokki and getting my browsers back to an unhijacked state and Pokki off my system (still furious that such a potentially malicious piece of software came preloaded on what has otherwise been a beautiful Lenovo PC purchased late December!).

Everything appeared fine and working correctly, but Saturday was also the day I needed to renegotiate my TV/broadband/phone package with my provider and basically have had my cable broadband upgraded to 50 MB there and then (they upped the speed on the line while I was on the phone with them), but was also sent out a new router as my older setup from them was not guaranteed to support the new speeds.

All appeared fine - happy computer was back again. Yay.

But a day or so later when I next went on any of the tumblr blogs I follow I would receive a connection was reset message in random image frames and they would load fine if I hit try again (this was in Firefox), I tried the same pages in IE and Chrome a... Read more

Hi there!

I'm fairly sure that I'm dealing with some sort of infection here...

Not only are download speeds inordinately slow (slower than the other computers here in this small office), but I'm unable to update any of my potential defenses (Malwarebytes, Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, etc) or download anything and install it. When I attempt to do so, I always get the "Extraction Failed: File is corrupt" error message.

Also, my start menu is largely empty, though this seems to be the result of actions taken after a Spybot Rootkit Scan. I have run just about every sort of scan I can think of, but I have not found anything.

I just updated maybe half an hour ago and now I can't use the start as its frozen as a white window icon. IS this a known issue, and is there a fix? Doing a system restore solves it - but then I'm rolled back and continually prompted that it'll update on my
next restart.

Moving the menu to the left, right AND top of the screen makes it work, but the bottom default is frozen.

A:Latest Windows 8.1 update freezing start menu?

A stuck or running process will do it. Finding it is a little hard if you are unable to pull up something like Process Explorer. You can use the Events log in Administrator Tools to see if anything is happening.

Personally I would use MSConfig, to try and debug the problem. Can you download Speccy from Majorgeeks.com and post the web URL that it gives from the output? Try rebuilding the Master Boot Record also. See Restore, Fix, Repair Master Boot Record in Windows 8 | 7 for how to access.

The biggest culprit that I have found in this case, was Windows Search Indexer. Along with Windows 8 not being able to update File History with a network drive. Then there is always the good old Anti-Virus that takes over while scanning your system, causing total complete halting of being able to do anything.

After automatically installing Windows Update KB898461 on 6/29/05 and restarting XP I got a message like "The Registry was corrupted during install process...Restoring previous successful registry....process successful. (Not in those exact words)
Then I opened the Start Menu. It looks the same, but when I hover over or click All Programs or any other submenu they don't appear. I had Control Panel set up as a submenu but when I clicked it it appeared in category view. I also can't view all my Quick Launch folders as submenus...they appear in Explorer mode as well.
I right-clicked Start/Explore All Users and the subfolders and shortcuts I had before are all still on the hard drive, they just don't show up.
I went to Windows Update site and viewed my update history, then clicked on this update and it said I could uninstall it through Add/Remove Programs, but it's not listed there. How can I get my Startmenu back?

A:Windows Update KB898461 trashed my Start Menu

You could try "system file checker"........it checks for missing or corrupted system files. Here's how to do it: Start>run>type in "cmd" (without the quotes)>type in "sfc /scannow" (with space after sfc)>click "enter".........let sfc run.

In a non-lucid senior moment and in yet another state of inattentiveness, I have unintentionally managed to move or copythe Windows Update from the Start Menu < All Programs List, over to sit under the Favourites Folder.

The bright yellow highlighter in the All Programs list indicates where the Windows Update program icon was previously, before my act of silliness...here:

And this is where it has ended up, ...here:

Now I'd like to restore the full link program icon back to it's proper place - amongst all of it's other friends....

Just as a matter of interest, is there a Folder that contains all of the programs etc. that are listed at Start Menu < Programs List?

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone else has experienced an icon display issue on their start menu with the 1607 update?

I have just clean installed (and fully updated) the 1607 Anniversary Update on 2 PC's and both are experiencing an identical issue with their start menu. The problem whilst seemingly minor is especially annoying given that I have performed the updates for some friends and it is a matter of pride to me that I hand over any such systems in a perfect state.

The Start Menu program list (A - Z list) as well as the "most used" and "recently added" lists contain icon tiles for the installed programs. On both systems around 25% of these tiles display a generic "blank page" image rather than the icon image associated with that program. That said the tile in question opens it's associated program and it's text label also displays correctly.......as I said earlier an annoying niggle!

By now you are all thinking ah its a icon cache failure just rebuild the icon cache!! I have of course rebuilt the icon cache following the instructions contained in option 2 of the tutorial here www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5645-icon-cache-rebuild-windows-10-a.html as well as deleting the C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\IconCache.db file neither of which corrects the issue.

Additionally, I have manually, refreshed several of the icons (right click button tile > more > open file location) by changing and then reverting the .ico file through propert... Read more
