Black Screen - BIOS update - UEFI Update

Q: Black Screen - BIOS update - UEFI Update

I have a HP 2000 Notebook PC that goes in a continue loop with a black screen. The operating system does not load. The fan works and the led power light is operational. A current system check reveals the last bios update being F.20 and UEFI update being 4.3.3.3. I downloaded the most current BIOS on an USB drive and attempted the BIOS update. The BIOS upgrade did not recognize the usb drive and I was unable to load the update. I downloaded the most current UEFI firmware and want to know how to upload it. Can anyone provide some assistance? Thank you and have a great day.

Sounds like a bad flash.

Unfortunately 'laptop' doesn't really give us anything really to work with.

Brand, model and flash method may help.

Well i've gone and done it. I attempted to update my BIOS and in the middle of it, the screen went black and the computer refuses to boot up.

HP Pavilion dv9628nr.

I've been trying to research this for over a week now and i've tried everything i've come across. I haven't been able to use a CRISIS RECOVERY DISK to bring the BIOS back to life and i've tried it sever different ways now. Nothing seems to work. Could i be doing it wrong? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I have a Inspiron 15 7547,  its fairly new i got it for christmas.
I went to my dell or whatever it's called i saw that by bios needed an update. I thought it was necessery so clicked update. My Inspiron started updating, the fan was on max rpm working loudly. I waited about 10min, the progress bar/window did not change so i decided to take a nap. Ooo was I surprised when i woke up, the computer was on but then screen was black. I restarted the pc holding down on the on-off button. Now all I get after turing on the laptop is a balck screen.
Please help, my computer is still on warranty according to dell.com
I'm on a job in Europe, i need my dell for work. I'm forced to work with a  borrowed laptop. Is there anything i can do to fix this issue? Please help...

A:Problem after bios update - black screen

As you know now, updating the bios is not something to do casually and especially while out of the country or anywhere with unreliable power sources since the slightest interruption or fluctuation of power can fry your motherboard. Sorry. I guess you'll have to wait to return to US to fix this under warranty or maybe someone else has a better idea.

I'm afraid I did something stupid. Accidentally, I updated a one-version-older bios from HP website over the already-installed newest one, since that caused problem after the first reboot. Then it worked fine, but I thought it's better to start everything over...bad idea!
Now after reboot, I have a black screen the system seems (?!) to boot, disk is spinning, but after a few sec I don't get ahead. Not even to the bios menu !!! Scary...I hope I did not screw my motherboard!!!
So far I tried only one thing: unplug the powercord, take out the battery, and after a few minutes I put everything back, boot, but the same: no screen!
What sould I do now?

Morning all, Long time reader, first time poster. I have an HP ENVY Touchsmart 15-j004sa (Windows 8) which won't boot following the most recent BIOS update.  The laptop will power up, but the screen remains black.  The power light remains on, but the screen, CAPS LOCK and WIFI buttons remains unresponsive and don't seem to flash an eroor code.  The sound of the HDD can be heard on boot up, as can the fans. I have attempted a  BIOS recovery using WIndows+B on turning on using a straight copy of the previous BIOS and a full recovery image, as well as all steps contained in this article.  In every instance the screen remains black and there seems to be no progressing from this point. I'm at a bit of a loss where to go from here, but I'm not quite ready to surrender.  I can see a few people have had similar problems with other models, but none so far with this one. If anyone has any suggestions or guidance I'd be extremely grateful. Chalky

I've been experiencing a completely black screen after my BIOS loads. A Windows update hit my computer last night and since then, the OS completely fails to boot.

Both hard drives (system volume and storage) are present and accounted for in the BIOS.

I tried Startup Repair by booting with my Windows disc, but it detected no problems and told me that my OS boots perfectly. Also tried some method I found on a forum saying Startup Repair must be run three times, but I got the same result each time.

Next step was System Restore. I have tried restoring from several different restore points, but I get an error message each time. Something vague, along the lines of "System Restore has failed." This is pretty worrying.

I tried to "upgrade" my Windows installation from the disc, but the next screen said to restart, then boot into the OS, then "restart the upgrade." No use to me since I can't boot my OS at all.

Anything to do with Safe Mode isn't an option either, since there is absolutely nothing happening after my BIOS loads up. Just a completely black screen. No Windows logo. No blinking cursor. Nothing.

All I can think of now is backing up my personal files and reformatting/reinstalling Windows from scratch, but I really, really do not want to do that. Any help would be much appreciated!

EDIT: Forgot to mention, my computer has always had a habit of crashing/BSODing at the most inopportune times due to some crappy music hardware I own. Not reall... Read more

Hi, about a month ago I formatted my pc, a toshiba satellite a350-12i. I installed all the drivers and it worked perfectly. Among the updates downloaded from the official website of Toshiba there is also the BIOS. Unfortunately I did and now I find myself with the PC died. It turns on but black screen because probably the BIOS file is corrupted or damaged. I tried resetting the Phoenix BIOS with a bootable flash drive but failed. You have other solutions? Thanks a lot

Hello, I recently bought a Lenovo z50-75. A few hours ago I wanted to update my bios. It was updating and suddenly the laptop restarted and there was just a black screen. I could hear the fans running, but the keyboard doesnt work because if I press Caps Lock the light won't turn on. I searched on google and there I found some solutions (with pressing keys, removing battery, etc.), but none seemed to work.I also found something about the CMOS battery. I opened my laptop but I couldn't seem to find it. What can I do now?  Best regards, Max

A:Lenovo Z50-75 bios update failed > black screen

Welcome to the Lenovo Community Max !

From viewing your model's Hardware Maintenance Manual there is a motherboard CMOS battery.  Unfortunately from the illustrations in the manual it would appear that the CMOS battery on the Z50-70 is soldered directly to the motherboard and can not be easily removed.  In that case try removing the main battery pack again and then press the power button for 60 seconds or longer.  Hopefully the CMOS battery will not be able to keep up with the power drain and will clear the CMOS.  Then reinstall the main battery pack and try powering it up.

For your reference, here is a link to the Hardware Maintenance Manual......

If that doesn't resolve the problem then I recommend you contact Lenovo Support for additional warranty service.

When updating my BIOS today I encountered problem of my laptop EliteBook 2570p not booting after update of the BIOS. It has a black screen with no signs of working hard disk or screen and the only things that working are the led light of "power on" and blinking "AC power" light. I read some information on the hp support but BIOS restore with key combination does not work for me as I cannot turn laptop off. Hard reset also did not work. Whenever I will plug battery or AC adaptor back two LED lights mentioned above will start to work indicating that computer is actually working. Can somebody help with this issue or suggest what to do best? Thanks!

A friend of mine was have a problem with an HP 2000 laptop and against my advice he went in and did a manual BIOS update. Took it from F37 to F10. Dont know much about BIOS itself but that is his claim.
Upon completion of the update the computer reset and left us setting at a black screen with the CAPS locks led blinking. After a bit of research I discovered the blinking indicated did the bios was corrupted and so I went through the recommended steps such as removing the battery and holding the power button, jiggling the RAM among other hopefully quick fixes to no avail. I have since removed the HDD and connected it the my desktop. My thinking is I can restore the original BIOS setting and get the laptop back to a functional state. I however have no idea how to do that as I cannot even find HDD in my computer. I love learning and am a bit of a "do-it-yourself"er so id rather fix the problem myself then send it to "the professionals" so please no replies saying take it to the computer doctor or send it to HP support.

A:HP 2000 black screen after (ill advised) manual BIOS update

If there is a problem with the BIOS (corrupted) you need to (re)install the firmware. If you can't access the BIOS I have no idea how you can do that unless you happen to have the special equipment for "flashing" that motherboard.

Hi everyone. Please help out here. I have an HP Pavilion G6-1d40ca. It crashed the other day while I was using it, and when I restarted it, it went to BIOS update. It froze while updating, and died in itself (I think the battery died, it wasn't plugged in. I never knew about BIOS update, so I wasn't expecting for the battery to die during the update, so I didn't plug it in.) Second time, booted it up (it was plugged in this time), and went into BIOS update once again. All's good, was able to use the laptop for about five minutes, then it crashed once again. Now, when I boot it up, nothing comes up on the screen. No nothing. The power button is on, the wi-fi is on, the LED light is blinking non-stop, more than 6 times than what is referred to the HP website.

I tried doing the remove battery and adapter, press power button for 30 seconds, plug it in without the battery, but to no avail. I also did the whole win+B, but doesn't work either. I tried pressing f11, but nothing comes up on the screen. I don't remember where I put the recovery discs that came with the laptop. I thought I put it on the box together with recovery discs for our other computers at home, but I guess I didn't. The thing is, I don't know where to begin, since I don't have anything on the screen itself. Not even a start-up logo or something.

I only had this laptop for about 3 months, and looking at the other threads, it might be a hard drive failure problem. I could return it to HP, but was just wonderi... Read more

A:Failed BIOS update,HP pavilionG6 won't boot up and only black screen

Did you run a BIOS update, because it wouldn't restart into one. What exactly did the screen say that made you think it was a BIOS update being done without running it yourself (unheard of).

What LED light is blinking nonstop?

Can you boot into HP Factory Recovery: HP Recover Windows 7 Operating System Using HP Recovery - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

You can try these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot which will tell you if you can boot a disk to do repairs. If so besides links to the Win7 installer to use for repairs, there are also links to HD and RAM bootable CD tests to check your hardware.

But if this cannot get traction quickly what I would do with such a new rig is call HP Tech Support and have them walk you through steps to determine if it should be returned or if there is a known issue.

Hello everyone! I have a clients Compaq CQ57-229WM laptop here that I put a new SSHD + OS / WIN 7 Home Premium, upgraded the ram. Well after installing almost everything I decided for some stupid reason to let HP Support run it's thing. I did this to mainly get all the programs that come with the laptop when purchased new.

Well it chose to update the BIOS and started before I could stop it. Halfway through the BIOS update ( which should have went perfect, everything else installed perfect and I had it with 0 fragments after installing the OS and a bunch of programs ) the laptop just froze. I left it on like that for hours and hours hoping it would just finish the BIOS update. If I didn't have bad luck I'd have no luck because the next day I had to pull the battery to shut it off. When I powered it on of course there was no BIOS post and I got the classic "it's on and running, fans spinning keeping it cool, caps lock light blinks BLACK screen of death.

So of course I tried to re-install the BIOS with a flash drive formatted with an HP TOOLS but that didn't work. I renamed the BIOS files 60 different ways just to get the laptop to accept and install them and not one of them worked. I kept reading the way to find out what to rename the BIOS files that are important is in the platform but I couldn't find it I guess because none of the tons of different names I gave the files worked.

Now I am here wondering / begging for any ones help that will tell me the exact method ... Read more

A:Black screen of DEATH / laptop froze during BIOS update

From my experience with retail PC's and laptops, using the brands support update utility...I've never heard of any of those updating the BIOS by itself or automatically.

I'm afraid since the BIOS update was botched is some fashion that the damage is done. You may have to contact HP/Compaq directly and see if there is some thing that can be done through them. This may involve sending it off for repair....that is if they can fix it and if they can it would be costly.

Hi, What is the complete product name or product number for your notebook PC?Is this your notebook? Updating the UEFI will not resolve your problem. Plug in the power adapter. Do not shutdown or unplug external power during the following process!! Failure to pay attention to the previous statement will be the cause of your notebook becoming non operational. Press the power button and then tap the Esc key to enter the UEFI environment. In the UEFI environment you can roll back the BIOS to a previous version if you have updated your BIOS at least once before. Select the F2 key to enter the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.  Select the Firmware Management button. The BIOS Management window will be invoked. This is where you can select BIOS Rollback to a previously installed version. Select it and folow the prompts. Happy Holidays, erico

Last thing it did was writing boot block or something and then it rebooted and i was prompted with: Boot Device Not FoundPlease Install an operating system on your hard diskHard Disk (3F0)F2 System Diagnostics For more information please visit: hp.com/go/techcenter/startup Did the Diagnostic Tests - Everything passed (memory, hdd) Restored Factory Default from Bios. Put windows 8 installer onto USB drive. Rebooted and then pushed f9 to get into Boot Options Menu. There was nothing. The boot options menu was clear. Thought I could simply do startup repair from the installer but no, can't boot off the usb stick (Sandisk Cruzer Blade 16GB). Also, I changed the boot order from  the BIOS, it still failed to boot. Then I switched legacy mode to enabled. Now I could boot off the USB stick, then I tried to fix the bootloader from command prompt to switch back to uefi mode. Rebooted and it still doesn't boot from UEFI mode.  UEFI Boot Order from bios looks like this:Internal CD/DVD ROM DriveUSB Diskette on Key/USB Hard DiskUSB CD/DVD ROM DriveOS boot Manager! I have an existing Windows 10 Pro installation. My partitions are:
system reserved: 500 mb
C: boot, page file, primary partition
E: logical drive
F: logical drive
I would like to do a clean install with WIN 10 Anniversary Update (1607), and convert my disk from BIOS to UEFI.
What modifications would i need to do to GPTgen while upgrading and maintaining my programs and data?

Thanks

A:clean install with anniversary update & disk conversion BIOS to UEFI

Modifications....none.

Windows 10 already utilizes GPT partitioning....on a clean install. The only thing you would need to do is change your BIOS firmware from Legacy BIOS to UEFI BIOS. You will need to confirm that in your BIOS. Or to check with in windows.....in the search bar of cortana, type system information and when the window pops up, scroll down to BIOS mode......here's mine.

Hello,
I am having problems with direct booting into Windows 8 installed into a VHDX file.
This is a four-partition UEFI boot on a GPT drive. EFI files are residing on a second partition of disk 0 (the ESP partition) in the EFI folder. The boot virtual disk is residing on the fourth partition of that disk 0.
When I turn on the PC, it shows black screen after the BIOS POST screen. No Windows 8 boot menu, no other information is displayed. However, if I press Shift+F12 (or F12) to start Dell BIOS Boot Menu and choose Windows Boot Manager from the UEFI part of
the boot menu, Windows 8 starts to boot without difficulties.
How do I make Windows to boot automatically without having to select Windows Boot Manager in DELL BIOS boot menu?
I believe I messed up with boot sector somehow... What needs to be fixed provided that Windows 8 will boot into VHDX file?
Thank you.

Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...

Hi everyone,

I am having an issue with my Toshiba notebook. My model is Satellite A210 - MS508C. I am out of warranty.

Originally, I was having problems turning on my computer. I would push the power button to turn on the computer. Usually, there is a Toshiba loading screen with a bar at the bottom showing the loading process. Right after, there is a Windows loading screen with another bar at the bottom showing the loading process. I was having problems at the Toshiba loading screen. It would load about 75% and then freeze. My computer would not turn on and I would have to manually press the power button to turn the computer off. Then, press the power button again after waiting a few minutes to try to turn the computer on again.

After having this problem for a week, I figured it was maybe because my computer is not as updated as it should be. So I went to the official Toshiba website to their updates page. I started to download the BIOS update.

In the middle of the installation, my computer shut down (turned off) by itself. There was no indication that the installation was complete. I also remembered reading that the BIOS update should restart automatically. My computer turned off itself all of a sudden and did not turn back on. After waiting a couple of minutes, I tried turning it on manually by pushing the power button. There was sound and the blue power button light below the touchpad was on. However, the screen was black and blank.

I've read a co... Read more

Known issue, but Toshiba takes forever to make it right... Yes we have seen the problem... but don't expect Toshiba to get it back to you quickily... as they have to replace the system board, and they are usually out.
There is nothing you can do but send it in... because otherwise your system board is ruined.

Hello everyone! I ama new user and i am coming up with this post as I couldn`t find any kind of solution for my problem.Recently I decided to do a reinstallation of my operating system, which also previously was Windows 7 Ultimate (x64). The installation went as usual, and after finishing it I went on to install all the latest drivers from the Lenovo site, for my product. When getting close to installing almost all the drivers i`ve needed, i stumbled upon a new version of the BIOS amnd the drivers and sfotware recommended for my laptop, by the producer. So i proceeded to install the upgrade, restarted the computer when it prompted me to do so, but after the so-called restart the laptop did not boot up as usual. At first it was telling me to not do anything as the BIOS is being flashed and then it was telling me something about some sort of image processing, things that i did not understand at the time (i have never encountered anything like that). After that my screen turned black. I have not done anything for a few couple of minutes as i thought it was supposed to be like that, but then i just force shut it down and unplugged the AC adapter. When trying to boot it all up again, the only thing i got was a black screen and nothing else. After doing a little bit of research it appears that, somehowm i`ve managed to corrupt the bios on my laptop or something, and nothing else would work at this point. I tried to remove the BIOS battery and the ram and then put them all back, trye... Read more

Hello,

So on my computer, something strange happens when I uninstall UxStyle. It has broken my Windows install once and it has done it again. The first time, I kept on doing system restores to see what was the problem that made that black screen. After trial and error, I narrowed it down to UxStyle. So, I deleted Windows 8 and installed Windows 7, which is what I wanted in the first place. Now, I decided to triple-boot Windows 7 with Vista and 8.1, and it has succeeded. I reinstalled UxStyle thinking it was just a problem with my old Windows install, and then uninstalled it after a few days since I felt like the regular look was better. I rebooted Windows and the same effect happened.

So, I would like to know if I can get and replace those three patched DLLs with unpatched DLLs for Windows 8.1. Could I just change the broken ones to have .old next to them and then place the ones I get here there? Also, would sfc /scannow work?

A:UxStyle Black Flashing Post-Windows Update Black Screen

Hello lct01a, and welcome to Eight Forums.

A sfc /scannow will attempt to repair any modified or corrupted system files, so that would be a good first step.

Anyway, He said that it didn't need a bios update, even the Samsung website said this computer needed a bios update. I posted this on hardware, firmware concerns, and they told me to post here, I was going to go to a site ,that had a download that checked drivers, I was told to stay away from this.

I need help ASAP. My computer was having many issues today, so I did a system restore. When it was done, it downloaded updates, I only restored it back to yesterday. Now, when I log into my account, the screen stays black and all I see is the pointer. What can I do to solve this? The PC is shut down right now.

A:Solved: Screen is black after system restore and update. Set back one day, screen is

Usually, system restore is used to resolve problems like this. You might want to consider doing a clean install and see if that has any affect. Hopefully your data is saved on an external or flash drive. There's also additional options that you can find here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Resolving-stop-blue-screen-errors-in-Windows-7

Last month I received an update from Microsoft which blocked windows from booting and after a few attempts to resolve I reverted, disabled updates, and continued working as I had other things to do that day so I could keep my private research funding. BUT Today I decided to take initiative since I could not find any information about this anywhere else and Windows updated itself while I was not paying attention causing the problem all over again.

I cut down my boot logs into 2 files as I always keep boot logging and "No-GUI" enabled.

ntbtlog_BAD.txt is the log section where windows boots to a black screen with cursor, the log shows that windows is repeatedly ignoring the 3 main processor drivers for the CPU, GPU, and Power Management in the laptop, I can get into the security menu and restart or attempt to launch task manager but launching task manager loads for 20 Minutes and does nothing all I can do in this state is reboot into the F8 recovery and revert to a pre-update state

ntbtlog_GOOD.txt is the log where windows successfully boots without any issues and all drivers load perfectly fine post-revert.

I marked the last date Windows update says an update was successful without a revert in WindowsUpdate.log with:
"!!!!END OF LAST SUCCESSFULL UPDATE WITHOUT BLACK SCREEN OR REVERT!!!!"
Which you'll need to copy-find-paste-search because it is a LONG log over a megabyte in size.

I also included a System Info Dump incase it's necessary.

Do you still need help with this issue?
I must advise you that I've worked these issues for years - both online and at work (I'm a PC Tech).
The end result in most cases is inconclusive - and the only "fix" is either a System Restore or a "wipe and reinstall"
Those that we have solved have ended up being drivers for 3rd party (non-Windows) hardware (things like chipset drivers, storage controller drivers, video drivers, even networking drivers)

I'll gladly help to work on this, but don't want to foster hope that this will be an easy fix.
If you do still need help, please post this info (even though you haven't reported BSOD's):  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/576314/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-10-81-8-7-vista/

Hey there,

Heres a little back story just in case any of this matters... I recently purchased an Alienware m11x from a friend. It was in good condition and was running fine, another friend asked if he could install Ubuntu on it, he re-partitioned the drive one half windows 7 and the other half Ubuntu... no problems there was working fine. After about a week I decided I wanted get rid of Ubuntu, I attempted to un-partition the drive and get rid of Ubuntu... in the process I was left with a error.

Next I got a copy of Windows 8 which my college provides and put it on a USB and booted the computer from there and had windows 8 running.... Everything worked fine until I restarted the computer, after restart I would get stuck in a black screen where my mouse pointer was the only thing visible... I've attempted so many things and nothing has been working, I'm not the best with computers but I'm learning...

Does anyone know how I can start fresh with windows and avoid the black screen, and maybe eventually re-install the original Alienware software???

If you could respond soon that would be great, if I solved this problem I would be beyond happy!

Thanks

A customer asked me to upgrade three PCs from XP to win7. I purchased three windows 7 pro licenses.
The machines are Asus P4 3Ghz with 1 or 2 Gb RAM, 160Gb hard drives and PCI-E Radeon X550 SE DVI/VGA 256Mb graphics cards.
The first one has 2Gb RAM, installed without a problem and is running well.
I've installed win7 three times on the second one which has 1Gb RAM and each time hit the same black screen issue.
Win7 installs correctly. The first time, I installed Office 2007, printers and other applications, checked all was well and left it for the users. I did not apply any windows updates as I expected them to run automatically. (Same with the first machine which did not have a problem)
They rang the next day to say they had a black screen on the second PC.
When I looked at it I found it would switch on, but after the BIOS - nothing, no disk activity. The caps lock led would go on and off with the key, but Ctrl-Alt-Del immediately restarted the machine. F8 had no effect. BIOS access is fine.
I ran memtest and a disk test but found no problems.
I restarted with the win7 disk startup repair and tried going back to checkpoints. It was clear from the checkpoints that windows updates had happened overnight.
However, despite going back to each checkpoint up to the first one, prior to any updates, I was still unable to start windows. The restores gave me 0x8000fff failures and the message "a patch is preventing the system from starting - system restore error 0x490"
Next I replaced ... Read more

Being as you cannot access windows you will need to do a full format, you have damaged files or registry items.  This happens at times when upgrading from XP or lower to 7, not sure of the cause it could be the lack of ram on that machine.  I have had problems on a few with only 1 gig!

Hi!

Since I updated my Windows 7 64-bit PC, it only shows a Black Screen after the Splash Screen. I only got it away by uninstalling the driver of my AMD Radeon HD 7950 graphics card but when I install the most recent version, the black screen reappears. But I need a graphics driver! I already uninstalled all the Windows patches without any success. Unfortunately, the restore point function in the OS was somehow deactivated, so I can't restore it.
The only thing left of the update is the Microsoft Office SP1. But this is just an application. It surely can't effect the video output before login, can it?

I had the same problem with some computers at work. It sounds like it is a problem with windows update not being able to update some drivers. I unplugged all the hardware (Mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc) and booted the computer. After a minute or two, plug everything back in and see if it booted.

I also tried to run windows update in safe mode with networking but it will not run.

Hello!

Sorry for the delay! You can see how busy we are! lol.

That is absolutely normal. Any large update or service pack on Vista or 7 will cause this.

It is nothing to worry about, and it will take a fair about of extra time on the final entry.

It may look a little scary, but it is fine!

Not sure if this is the right section of the forum to post this because I'm new here.

I am using my school tablet to write this since my other (gaming) laptop is unusable as I will explain.

A few days ago I turned on my (gaming) laptop computer and, after briefly showing the "Starting Windows" screen, the screen simply went black no login screen. There is a mouse which is perfectly responsive and moveable. I held down the shutdown button so the laptop switched off, then restarted. A screen came up saying "Launch Startup Repair (recommended)". I then deduced how this problem came about.
Used my laptop the night before.
Closed the laptop lid, thus beginning sleep mode. Battery probably at 15%.
When the computer ran low on battery, it turned back on (which frequently happens) and, as the computer had updates to install, began shutting down and installing the updates, rather than the usual hibernation because 'Shut Down' is the default setting when there are updates.
Computer runs out of power halfway through installation. Bad install (which I now know isn't the case).
I turn on computer and - BINGO! The login problem occurs.

Now, I repaired my computer and restored it to an earlier session. I then noticed that League of Legends wouldn't open (probably unrelated and have contacted Riot support). So this morning I decided to shutdown and install all the updates (which the battery charging, to make sure that there was no failure), which I think included SP3.... Read more

A:Black Login Screen after SP3 Update

There is no SP3 for Windows 7, only SP1.

I would restore it again then apply the updates one at a time to find the one causing the problem. You may have to restore one more time after than only this time do not install the update that is causing the problem and mark it not to be offered again.

The alternative is to save your data then restore to factory new via the partition on the hard drive. Check the manual for how but usually you can find it via the Start button or by pressing a Fn key (F10 or F11 often) during boot.

Hey, all.  I'm an IT Technician for a repair store, and I have stumbled across something absolutely frustrating.  I'm sure that this has already been discussed, but I must know a few more things.  I had a customer come in and request that we upgrade his Dell laptop (I will give the specs below) to Windows 8.  That was all very well and good, and the install went off without a hitch.  But a day later, the customer came back and said "put 8.1 on it."  I, for one, and a H8tr.  I absolutely despise Windows 8, 8.1, etc.  But, being as the customer is always right, I obliged.  After all of the Win8 updates were finished, it finally asked "do you want to upgrade to 8.1 for FREE?"  I clicked yes, ok, continue, whatever, and installed 8.1.  But alas, it was all in vain.  Now, when I log the customer in, it only gives me this hateful black screen and cursor.   I have done everything the entire interwebs has recommended, and then some.  It hasn't changed a bit.  I updated drivers, (tried to) refresh the pc, rollbacked the drivers, uninstalled the video drivers altogether, everything short of a fresh install.  So please help me out here!  The customer is getting anxious.

Hello,
Just built a pc with an Intel 945 MB, 3.6 ghz sockett 775 CPU, 2 ghz RAM, Maxtor SATA Hard drive, and GeForce 7800 pci express video card.
I nstalled windows xp pro, everything was working fine so before I installed any other software I decided to update the MB's bios. While updating the machine was rebooting and that's when the pci.sys error came on and I can't get it to boot again. I did a bios recovery and I got a message that the recovery was done successfuly but when I tried to reboot the message came back again.
I have tried everything including reformating the HD and tried installing windows again but the blue screen won't let me get past the setup menu.

Any suggestions?
Thanks, Howard

welcome to Techspot

Did you read the bios update FAQ to see if the changes had any relation to your box?
You should first try reverting to the old bios and then investigate your installation before making system core changes.

I put in my new video card ( ATI Radeon x1650 AGP) and I tried to get windows to work. It worked but kept shutting down with the BSOD. I searched around the internet and found that I should update my BIOS. I used the ASUS program to download and fix the BIOS that I had and BIOS 1.14 for my Motherboard (ASUS A7V8X-X) after installation I rebooted and my monitor wouldn't show anything a feeling went through my stomach that I had just screwed up big. I tried placing my 2 older video cards (ATI All-In-Wonder 9600, and an Nvidia card from 2000) the Nvidia card showed the screen and it said something about my disk crashing. Is there any way to recover my computers motherboard, or am i in too deep? Please reply if you have any information. Please speak in detail as I am not very educated in this area.

I have an old IBM PC running Windows XP pro. The system has been "challenged" for months and I turned the thing off in January and gave up. I'm back at it now and trying to get it figured out.
First and foremost, when I boot up, the screen turns black before the windows log-in comes on. I have to force the machine to turn off and after several restarts, I can get on.

When I try to update windows, it goes to the internet and says the site isn't available....grrr. So I can't update windows. I have servicepack 3.

And lastly, at times the CPU starts "screaming" and when I go to task manager there's an SVGhost file that is using tons of memory.

Hi. We are having this issue on W7 x86 Ultimate with an Asus M2N-VM DH mobo, which has an NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE / nForce 430 GPU. If we leave the default driver that Windows installs, we can use Media Center full screen, BUT we can't run the native resolution of the monitor, which is an LG L245WP-BN. When we try to run the install disk supplied with the mobo, which supposedly contains Vista drivers, we get an error saying they "can't be installed on this operating system."
We've been able to install nVidia drivers from other sources, but with *all* the ones we've tried so far, including the 275.33 mentioned here, we get a black screen (with sound) when Media Center is in full-screen mode.
Previously we were running XP MCE and had no such problem.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Lestrad. This thread is old and I am now using the 295.73 driver from Feb 2012. did you try using Driver sweep I linked to in previous post, reboot and install a newer driver. Download the driver first, Run Sweeper, go to Device manager and click your display adapter.
In the driver tab, Update or install driver and choose browse my computer and point to the driver folder you downloaded. This will install the driver only and not the rest of nVIDIA bloat.

A:Black Screen of Death after windows update

Black screen issues are difficult to solve.  You can spend weeks trying to fix them, only to find that nothing works.
At work we finally gave up on trying to fix them.  Now we attempt a System Restore point - and if that doesn't work we'll wipe the hard drive and reinstall Windows.

You've got several choices here:
- try to work on it
- backup your data (either by running a bootable disk, or by slaving your hard drive to another computer).
- wiping the OS and starting over.

IMO, the easiest thing here would be to backup your data and then wipe and reinstall Windows
I'd suggest that you obtain recovery media from the PC Manufacturer.
Most manufacturer's will provide compatible USB media for systems that came without a DVD drive.

As per title - I decided to update my Win 7 ultimate to SP1 which installed ok but I ended up with a black screen with working mouse cursor and a message box showing something like - "configuring user settings".

This stayed like this for a long time and in the meantime I used CTRL_ALT_DEL to try to run Firefox to get on to the net. Firefox failed to open which appeared to indicate something network related.

I finally shutdown via the taskmanager and booted to Safe mode - with networking. Trying to open a browser resulted in a painful wait which I gave up on. It appeared that it couldn't download anything.

I then did a system restore and got back to full working system. My Windows 7 has been extremely stable and I've no problems. I did a virus check and loaded the update readiness tool but haven't tried SP1 again.

I decided to search around but really this kind of issue seems like it could be caused by a lot of things and I've no clear answer to what is my specific issue. Given the problems with networking issues (eg. some people had suggested they unplugged the LAN cable as their Qnap nas was the problem - beats me but I have a Qnap), maybe it is this.

I doubt it's graphics although originally I suspected it but I do have the latest drivers installed and now I'm back after system restore this is stable as ever.

I'm really searching for either:

1) the best (quickest) way to troubleshoot this problem
or
2) a way to update to SP1 bit by bit - if that's possibl... Read more

After an update to win 8.1 I got a black screen after login , the only thing I could do was to press zero during startup and make a recovery installation .

It took 40 houres , I do not know why it took so long , but when it was over, the HDD was completely empty , so I installed win 7 instead , since I had not made ??a recovery CD . The problem now is that I still get black screen in between , and thinking that it might be a heat problem , I still have warranty , but I do not know if it applies when I installed win 7 on the machine.

I still have a warranty on my toshiba Qosmio

A:Qosmio X870-149 - Black screen after Update to win 8.1

Hi

Well, the warranty covers the hardware related problems. It does not cover any issues related to the software.

Now the open question is: why the black screen appears?
Is it hardware or software issue?

What happens if you access the BIOS?
Can you see anything on the screen?

Is something visible on the external monitor?

Hey everyone. Today I installed a new update for Windows 10 and after that the screen just stayed black. I suppose the update finished because my fingerprint reader was working and I was also able to change the volume wirh the keyboard and I also heard the notification sound. So I probably was signed in. So I restarted my laptop but It got stuck in the black screen with the red Lenovo label. But I was able to sign in (I suppose).  I am not even able tonstart the safe mode.  Every help is appreciated. Thanks!

I finally received my lenovo x1 yoga w OLED screen after 2.5 months of continued shipping delays. After playing with it for a few hours, my computer downloaded and installed a windows update. I then closed my laptop overnight. Upon opening in the morning, the computer will not display anything on the OLED screen. The computer will turn on and boot normally. I can log in w my fingerprint, I can talk to Cortana, but no image appears. I plugged in an external monitor via HDMI and it had a picture. I then rolled back the windows update. After doing this, the OLED screen still does not display an image, nor will my computer detect an external monitor.Tech support is completely useless. Since this happened after an update and while the computer was in sleep mode, I am assuming this is a software issue and not a hardware issue. I cannot log into safe mode due to not having a functioning screen.Does anyone have any idea as to what is going on? I am completely fed up with Lenovo after this 3 month experience. And would strongly discourage anyone from buying a lenovo product, especially this X1 yoga.

Can you get to BIOS?  This sounds familiar, but the issue should have been resolved at the Microsoft end by now.  Have a look at this bulletin:

That was a very long time to wait for you X1Y   I ordered one a few days ago and it shipped in 7 days - but it wasn't the OLED model.  I understand the OLED screen is stunning.  (IMHO I wouldn't blame Lenovo for problems caused by Microsoft's forced updates...)

A:windows 8.1 black screen after installing an update

Hello shafi19,

Your issue sounded exactly like mine. Even to the point of me, also, using the same fixes. (save the VGA try)

Good news! I got my computer back up & running by finally getting the System Restore to work.

For reference let me explain my whole situation in 2 parts. 1) ISSUE & 2) RESOLUTION

ISSUE

Last night I saw I had two updates from Windows Update. A "Security Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2964757) without KB2919355)" AND "Windows 8.1 Update for x64-based Systems (KB2919355)"
(see pic)

*EDIT* Also I notice now one updates says without the other? Never seen something like this, so maybe this was my issue???
I downloaded the updates, started installing, & went to bed. This morning I started my laptop up and it finished installing the update. I was able to log in and it loaded (seemed slow). ONCE LOADED it only showed a black screen with a working pointer/cursor.

I was able to access Ctrl + Alt + Delete, the Task Manager, & eventually restarted my laptop. Hoping a restart would fix it & eventually hoping to access the advanced controls from the boot screen.

This being my 1st issue with Windows 8, it took me 30 minuets to just figure out to use F9 to access my Advanced Startup Options.

Tried to restart using safe mode with & without networking. But everytime it kept showing the black screen. Just like shafi19, mentioned.

Anyhoo, jumping ahead of all my errors I'll focus on my eventual solutio... Read more

Hi,

I just recently installed Windows 7 Professional 32bit onto my HP dv9700, and it's been working just fine. As is the case with shifting to a new OS, there were loads of updates to install. The last one was to do with the video/graphics card, however something interrupted the installation process and I had to shut down in the middle.

Starting up again gave me a black screen, no logo, no login, no nothing; though I could tell that the underlying system was all there because it could still scan my fingerprint and log me in (you can tell by the sounds).
I can't get into safe mode because I can't see anything, and there is no cursor either.

When I shut the lid, and reopen (after logging in) the screen would 'melt' into white, then it would show a brief outline of what looks to be my desktop back when it was running on vista (i.e. I can faintly see my sidebar and gadgets). Though now not even this is happening, it just stays black. Despite this, I'm pretty sure the problem has to do with the graphics drivers and not a hardware meltdown of the graphics card.

I don't have an external screen to hook it up to, so I've been trying to figure out a way to restore the system drivers back to the last workable stage while going in blindly. Any ideas??

THANKS!

A:Black Screen after interrupted update installation

You'll want to start it in Safe Mode by mashing the F8 key during startup and selecting "Safe Mode with Networking" from the existing menu. You should be able to see everything as Safe Mode utilizes software rendering and will not resort to using your video drivers. You can then use this as an opportunity to install the correct video drivers. If somehow you cannot install the drivers within Safe Mode, you can use Safe Mode to uninstall the existing drivers and then boot back into regular Windows and reinstall them.

Edit: urgh, I noticed you cannot even see the menu for Safe Mode. This has no relation to your video drivers at all, which means there is some corruption of Windows or you really do have a hardware problem. Given it's an HP, I would not doubt it in the least.

If you wish, you can go into the recovery environment by grabbing a Windows cd and performing the instructions present in the article here to do an SFC scan of all your Windows files. If worse comes to worse (as in your system did not come with a Windows cd and you did not manually create a recovery cd yourself) then you may have to backup your files using an environment like Parted Magic to another drive and then run the recovery partition on your system (which often comes with OEMs nowadays) to give it a clean slate. If that still does not remedy your video woes, you must've coincidentally ran into a video hardware error as you were installing your new OS.

I have an HP DV8T entertainment laptop with an Nvidia GeForce GT 230M. The current driver is version 267.67. The latest from Nvidia is 280.26.

When I install 280.26, everything appears to go great...until I re-boot. I get the boot screen with the windows logo and the swirly dots. After that, nothing. Just a black screen with the cooling fans screaming.

I tried to uninstall the current 267.67 driver and then install the 280.26 version but I get a pop-up that says "No compatible device found." I also tried to "Uninstall current driver" from the custom install menu on the Nvidia installer. Again, everything appeared to go well until re-boot. Logo, swirly dots...black screen.

Thank goodness for the ability to create system restore points or I could possibly be re-installing Windows.

Any insight as to why I am unable to successfully update this driver?

A:Black Screen After Nvidia Driver Update

Usually, you will want to do a clean installation. Sometimes going from one version of driver to another might cause some issues.

Who manufactured your card? In some cases, specific manufactures 'tweak' their cards and sometimes the reference drivers are not recommended, but to use the manufacturer's drivers. But one thing you might want to also consider is a driver cleaner after you uninstall the current driver you are running with.

Hello, please forgive me if this is in the wrong thread.

I have a Sony Vaio VPCEB23FM and my issue is that my computer loads to a black screen with just the cursor. This first happened when I left my laptop on over night and I believe Windows did an automatic update and rebooted to the black screen. I have tried restoring to a point before the Windows update but I got an error:

System Restore failed to extract the file
(D:\Windows\assembly\GAC\Microsoft.DirectX.AudioVideoPlayback\1.0.2902.0__31b from the restore point.
An unspecified error occurred during system Restore. (0x80070003)

Clicking on the black screen with the mouse and pressing of any buttons does absolutely nothing so I can't open the task manager. Last Known Good Configuration brings me to the same screen. I have tried booting in to safe mode and reach the same black screen with the cursor. I have also tried enabling low resolution video which also brought me to the same screen.

I have tried to provide any useful information that I can think of. If I have left anything out that might help find a solution please let me know. Thank you for reading over this issue, any help will mean a lot to me.

I'm very much a novice when it comes for tech stuff, so if I posted this in the wrong place/irritate people with my cluelessness, sorry.

This issue started when I was restarting my Lenovo Y50-70 laptop after a Windows 8.1 update about 2 weeks ago. I'm only getting a black screen after the Lenovo logo. Initially, there's no cursor, but it shows up after 5-6 hours. Otherwise, it's still a black screen. Ctrl-Alt-Del (or any other key combos) doesn't work. The only response I get at this stage is Sticky Keys.

I could get into Advanced Recovery Options using Shift-F8 once, and I tried to restore to an earlier point (I installed two new programs before the update). But the restore failed; I don't remember the exact error message, but it mentioned something about something being corrupt, and running chkdsk. That was the last time I was able to access the menu, and since then F5/F8 combos don't work. I tried Safe Mode before the restore, but it didn't do anything different either. The only thing I can do now is access the BIOS.

Again, I'm a novice when it comes to this stuff, so I'm not sure if there's anything from the BIOS I can try, or whether this is a hardware issue (because of the corrupt/chkdsk thing) or a software one. I don't have any installation media/recovery drives at hand, and I won't really have access to a computer where I can make one until August (I'm not at home). Any help is much appreciated though.

Hello Everyone!,
I'm Coal143 and a friend of mine has suggested i post my problem on this website after we both came up with nothing despite working on it half a day.

Two days ago, i updated my NVIDIA Drivers to the latest (http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-301.42-whql-driver.html) Half way through the installation process, the computer screen turned black. Now i didn't think much of it at first and i had to go on my afternoon exercise so i left it there. A few hours later when i came back my screen was still black so i shut my computer down with the power button and restarted it. Everything was working fine the rest of the day. I shut down the computer when i was about to go to sleep, i did see the computer installing a windows update on shutdown, but again thought nothing of it and went to sleep. The next day, after i entered my password and logged on, the computer showed my desktop at a very low resolution for about half a second and then the screen went black. Several restarts later and nothing had changed. I tried a few suggested options i got from searching around on my old laptop but none of them worked. So i booted into safemode and did a system restore. Everything worked fine from then on, like nothing had changed. I noticed that the restore point was set before a "Critical Update" and thought it was mentioned the windows update, So i set windows update to not update unless i told it to. Today, however, The same thing ha... Read more

Hello. I'm sure this has been asked many times but I'm new here and I really have to ask. I have windows 8 but lately it keeps asking me to upgrade to 8.1. This happens both on the desktop computer and the laptop. I refuse but the notice keeps coming over and over in a day. I tried the following:

1. I can't get to where I can remove the video driver.
2. Only option it lets me do is a clean install using my windows 8 CD
3. The last thing I tried today was to uninstall the two updates (one a pre-requisite for 8.1 and the other for an automatic 8.1 update)

After having done No. 3, the computer rebooted and proceeded to install windows 8.1 without my knowledge. I thought it was just updating the changes from uninstalling the two files but when it was all done, I was on 8.1 again and asked to put my password and brought me to that darn black screen. This has happened on the laptop last week and I did a recovery to windows 8 but today on the laptop, that 8.1 notification keeps coming up and on the desktop computer, I just gave up and turned it off for the night.

I must note that I did see on the net somewhere that I could add an entry to the registry to stop the windows 8.1 notifications and then stop the automatic updates and choose which ones I wanted to update but as soon as I uninstalled the two KB files as per my search, it proceeded to install windows 8.1.

Please someone, does anyone at all have a permanent solution to this mess? I know there are many out the... Read more
