HP recommended BIOS update: Should I update?

Q: HP recommended BIOS update: Should I update?

Hey guys. I just bought a new PC for school and the HP Support Assistant program recommends an update to the BIOS. Now I know the update is available but I also know that you typically should only update if their is a problem as updating BIOS is risky if not done properly. Now since is a recommended update, I have already attempted the update and it has failed twice. I do not want to keep taking chances of messing up a brand new machine just for an update that may not even been necessary to begin with. What I would like to know, is what exactly does this update add/fix on this machine? I have already searched the Internet but have been unsuccessful in finding a description for this paticular update. If someone could please take a look at the attached screenshot and let me know what this update is for, I would be most appreciative. At least then I could make an informed decision on wether or not I'm going to attempt this update again. Thank you.

My Samsung series 3 laptop has been sending out popup messages telling me I need a bios update, I go to the Samsung software update site and this bios update has been failing, I have made several calls and chats to techs at Samsung who tell me to do what I have already done, they tell to ask for tier 2 tech, who can go in my computer and fix it , When I finally got a tier 2 tech, they told me the same thing, I told him what I had been told about him and what he could do, He said, is it working , I said yes, but settings on computer change on their own, like wifi turns itself on and that concerns me. Anyway, He said that it didn't need a bios update, even the Samsung website said this computer needed a bios update. I posted this on hardware, firmware concerns, and they told me to post here, I was going to go to a site ,that had a download that checked drivers, I was told to stay away from this.

Thanks,
Jim

Hello,

a friend gave me his HP DV6500 Notebook to fix it. He said it made an update and then for hours nothing happened. He shut it and started again.

I could see that it tried to recover 2 times. The second time it was successful but it somehow resetted or returned the Vista to a fresh install!!! His data was locked in a previous User account, I backed it up on a usb-stick with a linux live cd.

I can't make a reinstall because now a bluescreen always appears even when I boot from Vista DVD.

ntoskrnl.exe corrupt when try to boot vista in the normal way.
How can I fix that without being able to use the repair option of the DVD?
Sorry, the title of the thread is wrong. I figured out already that the BIOS version is for an Intel. So everything is ok with the BIOS actually.

Ok, I could fix it after following instructions from this page:

http://www.delmartian.com/nullpoint...0C1F5-0xC1F5-C1F5-BSOD-CLFS.SYS-KB946084.html

The Txf-log had to be removed and afterwards I was able to use the repair function of the Vista DVD again.

Hi Guys,

I have a REAL newbie question. I?ve tried reading a bunch of tutorials, but they?re a little over my head. I think my question is pretty basic, but after a couple hours research, hopefully someone here would be kind enough to help.

I have an M2A-VM motherboard and my system keeps freezing up, no input from keyboard or mouse, no ctl-alt-del, nothing. It freezes intermittently, but never goes more than 3 hours without freezing, sometimes freezes in a few seconds, with 5 ? 10 minutes being the average time it works before freezing. Seems to freeze more (often immediately) when I?m using the mouse than any other time, but it will freeze on it?s own, just idling, if you give it enough time.

I?ve read a few things including updating bios and downloading the latest motherboard drivers. My problem starts when I go to download the mobo drivers from this page:

ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

It lists 41 driver updates there for my motherboard:

41 files found

Qualified Vendor List (1)

BIOS (20) [BIOS History]

BIOS-Utilities (1)

Chipset (1)

AUDIO (1)

LAN (1)

Utilities (2)

Manual (14)

And apparently I?m ?missing? these Windows Updates:

Q934062 - Important
Q936960 - Important
Q950130 - Critical
Q951550 - Important
Q951944 - Important
Q973923 - Moderate

Question #1: Do I download all 41?? Surely my machine can?t need 41 updates? How do I know which ones to download and install?

Question #2: ... Read more

A:Windows Update INCLUDES Motherboard Drivers and BIOS Update on M2A-VM?

I have the same board on another pc.

You only need to download and install only that which would make your setup current.

You really only need to update the bios if you will be moving up to a newer processor that is not currently supported by the current bios or if the newer bios fixes a known problem.

You need the latest motherboard chipset driver. (I would install this first if you haven't already)

You need the latest LAN driver.

The audio driver you can either download from Asus or from RealTek.

Hello everyone,

I am sorry if I am doing this wrong, I am new to this forum.  I have two questions and would greatly appreciate any help.  My first question is; when I am done using my computer, I always click the sleep mode and put it to sleep. I have a hp computer and 8.1 that I recently "had" to update too.  Now every once in a while and it is not all the time, I will come into my room and hit the enter button or move the mouse and it will not wake up.  when my computer is in sleep mode the tower light is yellow as well as yellow light on my monitor and then when it is awake it is blue. Anyway when this happens I always have to hold in the power button for 10 seconds and restart it which has worked. I just wanted to know why this would be doing it and is there something I can try or do?

My second question is I have a recommended update from HP and it is an Alcor micro card reader Driver it is under recommended updates as well as under the printers and accessories category. Is this something that I absolutely need? should I just go ahead and download it since HP recommends it? I don't even know what it is or what it is for.

Thanks for any help, I am not a computer expert or anything so I learn along the way.  I appreciate any help from anyone and appreciate their time to help.

A:Windows 8.1 & A Hp Recommended Update

The card reasder driver is for those SD cards from our Digicams, and some tablets use them too.
Not updating it shouldn't be an issue.
As for your sleep issue, may I suggest not hitting the sleep button, but just closing the lid instead and report back with the results?

PS: There's no need for apologies.

When there is an important update, I get the notification in the lower right part of taskbar. When there is a recommended update, I get no notification even thoough I've checked the box to treat recommended updates as important ones. I'm running win 7 ultimate 64 bit. Any suggestions????

There is a new recommended update for my W8.1 today, Quote from KB2976978

This update will help Microsoft and its partners ensure compatibility for customers who are seeking to install the latest Windows operating system.

My windows 7 system also had a new update today, the many times released KB2952664

Neither W8.1, nor W7 will be updated to Windows 10. As such, the update joins the other W10 related update:

That did not stop MS to change how the "Windows Updates" panel looks, sneaked in the W10 coming soon message:

I'll disable Windows Update for couple of weeks, don't want W10 dropped on it by "accident"...

I have, or had a laptop purchased 9 months ago, therefore under warranty. Yesterday the ThinkVantage System Update recommended a BIOS update. After the traditional recommendations about what should not shut down the computer, the laptop is reset and started with the update.

During execution, displayed on a screen command, a message "ERROR XXXX. Press any key to continue." After press the key the laptop was freezedy was completely blocked. After an hour without seeing response and no sign of life, I decided to turn it off to confirm the disaster. The laptop was dead.

The laptop began to beep and would not start. Before the panic generated by the situation, I searched the forums where I found several cases that refer to the same problem and the insinuation that makes LENOVO about the customer's responsibility to avoid recognizing the warranty.

I was not looking for a BIOS update, it was recommended by ThinkVantage System Update, the software executed it and damage the equipment.

Besides being a damage caused by the ThinkVantage System Update, the situation gets worse when the answer given by support insinuates that the customer turn off the computer, so it is a CID (Customer Induced Damage) and therefore the guarantee does not cover it. I do not understand how LENOVO may imply that the responsibility of the customer. Really disastrous.

In conclusion, if you are not needing to make a BIOS update, it is preferable to omit the BIOS update messages given to ThinkVantage System... Read more

Microsoft initially released KB3121255 as "Optional" and has now upped it to "Recommended".

This update will replace NTFS.SYS with a newer version. This is perhaps the most important driver on any Windows 7 system.

As we have all learned from experience, newer doesn't necessarily mean better. But, of course, older doesn't necessarily mean better either.

Is there any consensus regarding installing KB3121255 or hiding it?

Any positive or negative experiences?

I'm just afraid that the updates such as WLAN driver or a high definition graphics driver (which actually failed before the Windows upgrade) will screw up something that is now working well.  Wouldn' t they have come with the Windows 10 Anniversary upgrade? What about the TFS Windows 10 RE Recovery Manager Installer?

A:Do I still need to install HP Sup. Asstnt recommended update...

Hi @RobertSK? HP Support Assistant (HPSA) is good and useful software but it is not mandatory to keep or use. Your computer can function well even without it.  If you do not want/need it you can just uninstall it. If your computer is functioning well not, I suggest you do not touch it and no, you do not necessary need to install new updates. You can update drivers manually [installer taken from HP website], by using HPSA or by using Windows Update/Device manager Let me know if this helps. Do not hesitate to post again if you face difficulties.

I bought this HP Probook 455 G3 and it has just run out of warranty which I intend to renew very soon. I don't like 8.1 or 10 so I spent more than I wanted to and I bought a new Windows 7 lappy that is a business laptop. I always do the recommended updates that I receive by E mail but one I never do which is the Bios update. The last time I did a Bios update on this lappy it wouldn't fire up afterwards. Rang tech help and after going through some troubleshooting it went back for repair. It came back working and luckliy i didn't have many pictures on it.Started from scratch and haven't had a problem since. I am now scared to do the Bios update. And.... Beofre I bought this laptop I bought a Windows 8.1 from HP direct . Hardly use it but update virus protection as necassary and last week there was a Bios update to perform. I also took out another 2 years warranty on it. Same think happened. Last week in fact. Wouldn't fire up afterwards. Again Tech help tried to help but in the end after frequent crashes it went in for repair on Friday. Good job I took out the extra warranty... I am now down to 1 laptop which I do not want to fail on me. I don't seem to have much luck with the Bios updates... Advice please? Is the Bios absolutely essential?

When I boot up my Windows 8.1 system, on the screen preceeding the login screen, I get a message that there is an update available and I need to go to the settings option. Going there, I find that the only update available is KB3035583, which is the option to upgrade to Windows 10.

As I have attempted this upgrade for several weeks which failed in each of the different methods I have discovered, I decided to remain with 8.1 and not spend more unproductive time trying this upgrade.

I have uninstalled this update (KB3035583), to remove the script icon from the taskbar, however I now keep getting the update message during bootup, where I now do not know if there are any new updates for 8.1, or if it is only the Windows 10 update that is giving this message.

I would like to know who to remove this update from the Recommended updates that I now get during the update check, in order to no longer receive the update message. Although I had this on the Windows 10 forum, I was told I needed to use this 8 forum for this problem. Thanks,

I have downloaded it and installed it all 13 times, yet for some reason it keeps showing up as a new update. The update I am talking about is, Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2656351).

Yesterday (11/02/12) Windows notified that there were a couple of critical updates available for installation. Always keen to keep my spec up-to-date I proceeded to install them. I'm afraid I don't know the details of the updates. As I did a System Restore (see below) they have been removed from the list of Installed Updates.

After automatic installing and re-starting the first thing I noticed was that the screen resolution had been changed. Fixed that through control panel. More importantly I discovered that the following had occurred:
I could not get any sound.
Could not get streaming video. Flash crashed every time
Certain links within Control Panel would not function
Investigating (1) above, Device Manager reported that the hardware was functioning correctly. In attempting to resolve this via Control Panel/Appearance & Personalization/Personalization I noticed that the Sounds link indicated No sounds and I could not click through from the link (see below) to change anything (this happens with a few other Control Panel options).

I can find no way of reaching the sound properties. All links are non-functioning.

For (2) I uninstalled Flash Player using the Flash uninstaller, cleared out the registry of any remaining entries for it (yes there were still a couple) and re-installed it (v11.1.102.55) and re-started PC. On first re-install I had no success but tried same process again and did get it to stream video (no sound). However when I started PC today we are back ... Read more

Hello to the BleepingComputer community,First of all I'm sorry I haven't finished some of the steps from the Preparation Guide. It's because these steps require a reboot (e.g. Step 6: Disable your CD Emulation Software - DeFogger will ask me to reboot the machine), and I have a bad feeling about the question if it is safe to reboot in my situation: I'm not sure if I have a type of malware which is ready to infect the BIOS - if it is so, then it could infect it much easier during the reboot process.- If there is a good way to find out what is the problem (and fix the BIOS threat part if it really is present) without rebooting / shutting down this PC, or at least without booting from this hard drive (which I feel is probably infected), then please tell me what should I do.- If you know a place / forum where I can get a specialized help for this (seemingly BIOS-malware related) situation, please tell me where I could go.- If there is no way to move forward, I'll go ahead and risk the reboot, and follow the other steps (steps 6 to 10) in the Preparation Guide, no problem.I kindly ask you to please read below the details of the problem as it occured to me, and the things I have tried so far.The PC is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core BE-2350 2.1GHz, Motherboard Biostar TA690G AM2 (with AWARD BIOS), 4GB RAM, 200GB SATA HDD, and an ASUS EAH4870 card added a few years ago. It's with WinXP SP3, AVG Free 2012, (standard) Windows Firewall, and it's behind a router.I ... CPU fan failed and PC would not boot except to "fan failure" message. Fan has been replaced, but now constantly getting blue screen error BSOD, which reads "WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR" and sometimes other errors. Windows tries to boot into recovery but BSODs again and again. What I've tried:  1) Reset BIOS to defaults. DONE - same behavior after reset to BIOS defaults.  2) Tried booting from USB drives (several) using Linux recovery tools (Kaspersky, Ubuntu Live, etc.). KERNEL PANIC, etc.  3) Downloaded BIOS update from HP and created BIOS update USB. Rebooted with USB key (I turned off secure boot, etc. to allow USB booting.) - NOTHING. I tried this both allowing BIOS to run untouched  and by going into BIOS options (pressing ESC @ boot up) - no options anywhere to read/update BIOS. According to an HP Support doc, I tried updating the BIOS from w/in "HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI". The version on this PC is version 5.2.2.0:  I see no option to update UEFI (Flash BIOS). Options read as follows: System Information, System Tests, Component Tests, Test Logs, Language, Exit.  What do I try next, please? BIOS: JA2 v80.35CPU: AMD A8-6500RAM: 8GB DDR3, single DIMM in slot 4.     NOTE: System came w/ RAM in slot 4. Hello, I have updated my HP Elite 8200 CMT from windows 7 to windows 10. In the HP driver download page, there is no BIOS update for windows 10. But I have noticed that there is BIOS update for Windows 7.  The question is, may I use it on Windows 10 ?  And in general, are BIOS updates OS dependant ?

A:Bios update after update to Windows 10

Hi: You can pull the DOS based flash file folder out of the BIOS package, copy just the contents of the DOS flash folder to a USB flash drive formatted with the FAT file system. Plug the flash drive in a usb port, restart the PC, tap the ESC key to get the menu of options. Select the F10 System setup option to gain access to the BIOS. Select the File menu>Flash system ROM command.  Select the USB flash drive. The PC will see the files on the flash drive.  Follow the on screen prompts to update the BIOS. That way it makes no difference what operating system you are running. One very important note...I have read the installing the latest BIOS 2.29 causes issues with W10. There is a forum post regarding that... http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/HP-Compaq-8200-Elit...I am running v2.28 on my HP 8200 Elite CMT, and have no issues at all on W10. I read that post and decided not to update the BIOS to v2.29.

I wondering what Crisis Recovery Disk do you have ?:|
In my experience the special disk is needed which is available only for ASP technician.
Therefore it?s necessary to contact the ASP in your country in order to reflash the BIOS.

In my opinion you shouldn?t not try any ?Crisis Recovery disks? which you fond in the net? this can lead to mobo damage?

Hello everyone! I ama new user and i am coming up with this post as I couldn`t find any kind of solution for my problem.Recently I decided to do a reinstallation of my operating system, which also previously was Windows 7 Ultimate (x64). The installation went as usual, and after finishing it I went on to install all the latest drivers from the Lenovo site, for my product. When getting close to installing almost all the drivers i`ve needed, i stumbled upon a new version of the BIOS amnd the drivers and sfotware recommended for my laptop, by the producer. So i proceeded to install the upgrade, restarted the computer when it prompted me to do so, but after the so-called restart the laptop did not boot up as usual. At first it was telling me to not do anything as the BIOS is being flashed and then it was telling me something about some sort of image processing, things that i did not understand at the time (i have never encountered anything like that). After that my screen turned black. I have not done anything for a few couple of minutes as i thought it was supposed to be like that, but then i just force shut it down and unplugged the AC adapter. When trying to boot it all up again, the only thing i got was a black screen and nothing else. After doing a little bit of research it appears that, somehowm i`ve managed to corrupt the bios on my laptop or something, and nothing else would work at this point. I tried to remove the BIOS battery and the ram and then put them all back, trye... Read more

Dear all, Since the beginning I got troubles with charging - ( 94 % plugged in, not charging). The easiest solution was just remove the battery, but not for HP Omen. I removed battery and destroyed the rubber on the bottom. I had to open the laptop, because one morning I got the massegae that my laptop is overheated and fan does not work properly. Both fans works only during the lounch, when windows works only one fan was in operations, second one never starts again. Looking for the solution in the internet I have found that this can be because of BIOS is not updated.  I pushed F2, checked the the system, everything is fine and then I installed only one version which I have found there. No massages regarding overheating any more, both Fans are working full power and very very loud. Temperature of processors is 30C. In my room 25C.  I followed all instructions, but got massege BIOS update is blocked.I downloaded the most previous version, again BIOS update is blocked.Current version of bios is BIOS version F00 04Sep14.  Can it be solved somehow?

Hello all, this is my first time posting here so please forgive any mistakes/oversights. I've just updated my Samsung laptop's system BIOS via their software update program, and my Nvidia GPU (GT 650m DDR3) no longer seems to work. The Nvidia control panel is still there, and it still gives me the option to select which programs use the GPU, but there is no GPU actitivity showing up. Also,I've tried playing Skyrim (which auto-detects the PC's graphics cards) , and the game no longer seems to detect the Nvidia GPU (just the Intel integrated graphics).

My laptop model is NP550PC7, with 6 gig of ram, and an i7 quad core CPU, and the OS is Window 7 Home Premium 64bit.

I've tried looking in the BIOS but I can't seem to find anything related to the GPU or display options. Any help or avice is much appreciated.

A:Problems with Nvidia gpu post BIOS system BIOS update.

Hi,

Have you updated your GPU with the latest drivers?

http://www.geforce.co.uk/drivers

Please navigate to:

Start> Control panel> Swith to icon view> device manager.
Look under "Display Adapters"

Is the Nvidia GPU listed there? If so are there any yellow symbols etc?

Cheers

Hi,

I have a old Tecra 9100 with years of good service, and this is my first problem, but is a great one, after a forced reboot the screen shows a BIOS block 1 damaged message. I have tried to repair the BIOS upgrading to the last version I have found, the 1.6 one, but its a Windows version (to upgrade from a running Toshiba computer I think) and when I try to run it in another computer to generate a FDD and upgrade BIOS, I cant, beacuse a Toshiba common modules message.

Its there any BIOS diskette image-archive I can dowload to perform the BIOS upgrade in the BIOS?

Thanks in advance.

A:Tecra 9100 - BIOS block 1 damaged and how to update BIOS?

Hello

All you can find is stuff on Toshiba support page. I don't know where you live but try to contact nearest Toshiba authorized service provider.
They have access to Toshiba database and they can obtain all this for you. Make a call and ask for help. I am pretty sure they will help you to solve this BIOS issue.

Made the huge mistake of updating BIOS. Had small MOBO usb prob, and for some reason thought a BIOS update would do something. Wasn't too worried because Gigabyte touts Dual BIOS pretty strong.

Anyway, tried updating BIOS, then system would not boot, so the Backup BIOS didn't kick in. btw, the MOBO is a Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro.

So I copied the backup bios to a floppy and used the floppy to fix the main bios. OK, now computer would boot, but would freeze up after the desktop icons appear. Actually would sometimes work for a few minutes, but always froze up.

Boots OK to safe mode, even to the point of getting online, so I downloaded the old bios from Gigabyte, put them on floppy and used that to update the main bios. Same result.

Also did a system restore from XP Pro Safe Mode (because XP wrongly states that this can be undone; didn't find out that System Restore done from safe mode cannot be undone until I tried to undo!).

My tech support (ABS Computer; they rule) thinks that the BIOS is now fine, that some windows files are corrupt and a re-install will fix problem and mobo is probably fine as well. I'll buy that.

anyone have any miracle suggestions before i re-install? Is a repair install worth a shot? Really not looking forward to re-installing all my software and putting all my data back where it belongs to get my email hist., bookmarks, etc. back.

thanks - I will now write the following 500 times: LEAVE THE BIOS ALONE! even with Dual BIOS

My motherboard is GA-X38-DS4 Bios F1 First Release.
I notice on the Gigabyte site that are some bios updates.

F1 First Release.
F2 ADD new version super I/O code,Improve CPU compatibility.
F3 Enhance memory performance.
F4e Beta bios.

So..now is it a good idea to flash/update bios or not and why?
--------------------------
I read this in gigabyte web site...
Warning:
Because BIOS flashing is potentially risky, if you do not encounter problems using the current version of BIOS, it is recommended that you not flash the BIOS. To flash the BIOS, do it with caution. Inadequate BIOS flashing may result in system malfunction.

What is a BETA?

Hello all.
Running windows 10 pro 64 bit.
I've updated from Version 1511 to the anniversary update, 1607.
Or at least, I thought I did.
The update went well, no hiccups, no errors. Used windows update, let it downloaded and install and rebooted. Alas, system still shows OS Version 1511.
Used update again, same thing, rebooted, 1511.
Went to the windows site, downloaded the windows10upgrade9252.exe, ran it, same exact issue, rebooted, still showing version 1511.
Error logs show no issues. Disabled all external drives, turned off anti-virus, etc, repeated, rinsed, rebooted, still version 1511.
Only think I've not done is burned an ISO to DVD and updated from that.
Any clues as to what's going on?
Thanks!
Nelson Davis

Hi, I saw the new BIOS version 1.25 dated ?14?.?09?.?2016 appearing on Lenovos support site. I did not check the version I was having on my system before downloading the "new BIOS", so I started the installer and the tool told me I already have this BIOS version. msinfo32.exe tells me I am having BIOS 1.25 dated 13.07.2016. So apparently the BIOS was released already some time ago and I already flashed it to 1.25. So whats the point of re-releasing the 1.25? If there are any changes of todays version compared to the 1.25 released some time ago, is it worth flashing? If yes, how can I do this if the tool tells me I am already having the latest version and it does not let me override my BIOS? Thanks and best regards,Martin

You have several problems but have provided no info.

please fill in your sysem specs.
1-cool-down? from heat? or something else?

2-If it is heat updating your BIOS (done differently on different computers) wont help

3-sound cut offs might be anything, a driver, a device, etc.

Hello, so my sister has Acer Aspire S3-391-6046 ultrabook and the bios has never been updated and the bios on there is from 2012 and suffice it to say there have been probably 5 or so bios updates since. What I am wondering is the computer came installed with Windows 8 and well has now been updated to Windows 10 and when I go to the Acer's website and type in my serial number to bring up the ultrabook and appropriate driver and or bios updates everything is for either Windows 7 or 8/8.1 and there are two options BIOS - UEFI for windows 8 (not for Upgrade) or just Bios. Either way there is nothing for windows 10 so I am wondering if I can flash one of the other Bios updates that are stated for Windows 8 or not as some of these bios updates actually fix some issue relating to heat and or fan speed issues. this Ultrabook was upgraded from Windows 8.1 to 10 using the integrated upgrade feature if that matters at all.

Thanks,

You would flash your bios to have the lastest update for your
system which will,in some cases, make it run faster.

http://www.ultimatepcrepair.com/news/22.html is where you
can go to read more about flashing, which is updating your BIOS

so what im trying to get at is do i click on bios and download and istall that.
or do i click on cpu support find amd fx 8350 download and install that. or both?

A:New cpu, do i update bios?

The latest BIOS version has all the fixes and support of all previous versions therefore you only need the latest version.

Check what BIOS version you have now, if you have version 1604 or higher/newer than you do not need to update the BIOS. You can see the BIOS version when you turn on the computer or when you enter the BIOS setup by pressing DEL on boot up.

If you do need to update your BIOS to version then download the latest version and extract the ZIP file to a USB stick. Then enter the BIOS setup by pressing DEL when you boot the computer and go to the Tools section and then select EZ Flash with the USB stick already plugged in before rebooting. Then select the USB stick and then the file to update the BIOS.

The manual covers the update in more detail and there is more than one way to do it too, but download the manual from the Asus support site if you don't have the paper copy and go to section 3.8.1: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A99X_EVO/#support

I'm getting an error from BIOS update file sp76205.exe, too: "hpqflash\ROM.CAB is missing or corrupt." It is indeed missing. (this was a reply to the post found here: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Operating-Systems-and-Recovery/bios-update/td-p/5659132 For some unknown reason a moderator moved my reply...)

A:Re: bios update

Hello @_Ari_? Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome ! I have moved your post and created a new dedicated thread for you so that it has better visibility. In order to be able to assist you with the BIOS update, you need to provide your computer model and details about it.   However, I'd like to ask you why  you want to update the BIOS ?   Personally, I do not recommend you do it unless you experience some issues with your existing BIOS and you are sure that the new BIOS will fix it. General recommendation I provide to users/customers is NOT to upgrade BIOS/UEFI unless they experience any kind of specific BIOS/UEFI issue. Updating just for updaing and just for using the latest verson is not solution. Any kind of update (no matter for what and who relesed it) can fix 2 issues but may introduce 10 more issues. Additionally, upgrading the BIOS (for any vendor) poses more risks because BIOS recovery is not that easy as compared to typical software updates IF something goes wrong. Same applies for Windows Updates, OS update, drivers updates, etc - upgrade/update IF you have issues which you know are fixed in the newer version or for some severe security issues. Otherwise, keep the existing version as long as possible.

A:BIOS update help!!!

The first question to be answered is "why do you need to update the BIOS"?

BIOS updating is not like installing newer drivers, you should only ever update a BIOS to fix a known hardware issue that you are actually experiencing, and for which the motherboard maker has released a fix for that is detailed in the release notes.

BIOS updating is not a recreational activity, it is actually a risky process as there is a reasonably significant chance that it can go wrong, effectively (economically) destroying the motherboard.

Hello, I've just recently bought a new hard drive to replace the one I got with the PC. Before the old hard drive failed I was forced updated into Windows 10 which I now run curently. I've had to manually reinstall all the HP drivers that were on the original hard drive (CoolSense etc.) but theres a problem. On the drivers and software page for the HP Pavilion g6-2260us, there's only options for this computer configured up to Windows 8.1 and none for Windows 10.  The drivers for 8.1 still work on 10 but I don't want to risk trying to update the BIOS with one that isn't right for this setup. I want to do this because the hardware is eating up 3GBs of my RAM and every online source points to an oudated BIOS misusing the RAM. The BIOS is in Legacy Mode and is version 2.7.The tl;dr1) Are there any new BIOS updates for this config? 2) If the BIOS isnt to blame for all that reserverd memory, What other factors might be at play?

Sorry, I'm usually quite good with computers, especially HP's. And as of the moment, i don't know weather or not i need a BIOS Update. A couple re-formats ago, i Don't know where, but i had gotten a message from somewhere that i need a BIOS Update... But when i updated my BIOS on my Vista x64, it...somehow... crashed/fried my motherboard, and i had to send in my faithful lappy into HP...

Now, any-one know if i need an Update for my HP? I have my specs all filled out and all, and is it possible that it can *destroy* my laptop?

Hi there,
Not sure if this is hardware or software issue for correct thread, could be both!
Have a sick Dell Laptop Studio 1555 that I need to get files off.
Battery wasn't charging up but laptop turned on when plugged into wall. Msg of "battery cannot be identified' came on. Had a small blue screen of death (not full screen) that said something about the driver loop - was too fast for me to read, and computer crashed.
For some reason (I did this a few weeks ago, but have since been away) I started to update BIOS. Partway through the flash (or whatever it's called) I freaked out thinking I was going to wipe all the files, so aborted.
So...computer no longer starts! Laptop/fan starts, keypad lights up but screen is black/no power.
Help!
Have a stuffed it completely, or can I recover the files.
I can't tell you what operating system it is, or much about its memory, sorry.
Please direct me elsewhere if necessary...very grateful for any help.
Cheers.

If not done properly you can end up with a motherboard that won't boot anymore and no way to fix it. I wouldn't do it unless there is a specific reason.

New laptop is currently running BIOS N81 V01.09  6/28/16.  Cannot find an option to downgrade USB3.0 ports to USB2.0. Cannot find settings to  change xHCI mode to allow using native Windows EHCI driver. Does BIOS update V01.11 Rev.A 9/12/16  enable these options? Is there another place to find these settings without a BIOS upgrade? Virtual PC Windows XP cannot connect to USB3.0 controller, need the use of the 2.0 ports for software dongle use.

Tim_St Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!Sorry, but if the ports are configured for USB 3.0 in hardware, there is no way to "downgrade" them to 2.0.

i need to update my bios to version 1012 to be able to use it.
i got the bios update folder but im confused on how to apply the update. can someone help me please.

A:BIOS update. how?

You need to download and unzip two files from the Asus website. One is the BIOS file, the other is the Award BIOS flash utility.

Within the flash utility zip folder is a readme.txt with step by step instructions. You can make the required boot floppy on another computer. If the PC with the a7a266 motherboard doesn't have a floppy drive you will need to make a bootable CD/DVD instead.

My friend called me today telling me that when he tried to install a new ati 256Mb video card, after installing the software and inserting the new card, the monitor wouldn't come on and when he put the old card back in everything worked fine. He then told me that when he called "tech support" they told him that he needs a new bios chip upgrade as well as a chipset upgrade. I thought that it sounded a little far fetched, because this computer is old but not ancient. It's a pentium 4 1500 MHz with 750Mb of ram. I was wondering if I really needed to update his bios and how to go about doing it because I know it's a tricky task, or if the problem lies somewhere else.

I was informed that my BIOS needs updated because I installed Windows XP SP2 and upgraded my processor. Something about an ACPI compliance issue with old BIOS. I don't want to spend another $40 on this PC if I don't have to. Is this worth the expense and will it correct issues with my Java Virtual Machine and Onboard Sound?

Any help would be great!

A:BIOS Update

Hi alterego71 !

Please post your system specs, see the link in my sig. We'll need the brand and model of your motherboard but having all the information right from the start will help.

A BIOS update usually corrects some very specific hardware compatibility issue. On the motherboard manufacturer's website you can read the release notes of the different versions of the BIOS. If nothing in the release notes seem to be related to your issues then chances are they're coming from somewhere else.

Have you tried uninstalling the java virtual machine and reinstalling it ?

Go to the device manager : start => run => devmgmt.msc. Expand sound video and game controller and tell us whether there's any warning sign next to your sound device. If so then double-click the device and give us the error message you'll see under device status. If there are other devices with some warning sign next to their name tell us about it. Have you reinstalled the motherboard drivers after you installed XP ? If not then this is likely to be your problem.
