Q: Problem with Lenovo Y510p - Reboot Loop with black...

Hello, I have been using a Lenovo Y510p since the beginning of 2014. It worked perfecly fine till a couple of weeks ago when it suddently turned-off while I was watching a video. From then onwards, it wouldn't start. Novo button or power cycling wouldn't help either. Since it is out of warranty, I took it to Geeksquad to see if they can diagonize the issue quickly but I was said the problem could be deep rooted and it needed thorough trouble shooting. I came home and started disassembling the unit part by part (Take out Hard Disk, Optical Drive, RAM, Wifi Card etc) to see if I could isolate the problem but the laptop simply wouldn't turn on. Suspecting that the mother board could be the problem, I purchased an used motherboard on ebay and swapped the existing one with this and assembled all the components back to their place. This time, when I power on, the keyboard would glow and I can see the heat dissipating fan spinning but it would spin for like 3-4 seconds and then it would stop and the laptop would power off. Then the laptop would start again, the fan starts spinning and stops after 4 seconds and this enters into a loop. All this while, the screen is totally black and doesn't display a thing. F9 or any other buttons are of no use. Novo button is of no use either. The laptop enters into the same loop with Novo button too. Would this mean that my CPU has given up on me? I request your kind help! Thanks,Shyam

Hello everyone,  I bought a y510p about two years ago and for the first year it worked flawlessly then one day it wouldnt start up. What would happen is it would try and boot up and show the Lenovo message then go into the novo boot menu and after 1-2 in that menu it would crash no matter what option was chosen and would keep doing it over and over. It also would only do it if the A/C cord was NOT plugged in. If A/C power was plugged in it wouldnt start at all. I gave up on it for about 9 month and it sat in my closet About 3 days ago i tried it again and it booted up fine no problem, did windows updates, restarted multiple times and no problems until today where it shut down and reverted back to what it did before. Any ideas? I am stumped and believe there might still be life in it.  Thanks!

Hi everyone - I have 2 issues with my y510p (it's a little less than a year old, so with the warranty coming up I figured I may want to get some second opinions). The first is that recently, say within the last month or so, it has developed the habit of rebooting for no discernible reason and with no warning.  It will just snap to a black screen instantly.I've done a full refrresh of my Windows 8. I've run all the validation tools I could think of (hard drive/mem/OS files/etc.) There's nothing particular evident in my event viewer except for this in my system errors:'The description for Event ID 0 from source GeneStor cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event:GeneStor driver startedGeneStor driver started (2)'I believe they are connected because before the crashes started to occur the Onekey Recovery application would start randomly opening multiple instances of itself.' As an addendum, it also appear that I am getting kernal-power event 41The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. So as a heads up for anyone else that might be encountering either of these issues - I called support just now and I'm sending it off for repair.  Bit of a bummer since this is my work machine (thankfully I have my t500 from college still kicking around to use in the meantime). Tech support was really nice and quick. Didn't make me walk through the diagnostics/troubleshooting I'd already done which is refreshing. Hopefully this is just a fluke because apart from these issues I really like this machine (and as I said, my thinkpad is rock solid.)

Hi, I've been having troubles with my laptop screen. Upon reopening my laptop from sleep mode, the screen remains black instead of loading up the login screen. I've plugged in an HDMI external monitor and it displays fine so I know it is the laptop screen. Also if I restart the laptop, the laptop screen works fine. I've tried updating graphics drivers and adjusting external monitor options (Win+P) but with no success. Any suggestions on what I should do? I've had this laptop for a while now and there is no valid warranty.Thank you

I just want to comment on this - because I'm having the same issue.  I've used the laptop for a number of months without crashing issues, and it seems to have cropped up pretty recently.
I think it might have something to do with the driver version?  It also only seems to happen with certain games.  In particular, War Thunder and GTA4.  I play Dota 2 quite a bit and don't seem to have any problems at all.

Hi,I have a problem when playing any games with SLI enabled. Games crashes at random times, sometimes even after ~5mins. So at that specific time the screen goes black and the game minimizes (or I try to minimize it by myself). After that the message pops out saying "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered". I have latest Nvidia drivers (v344.11). I'm running Windows 8.1 x64. The problem occured with any version of display drivers I've installed so far.

I had a missing or corrupted dll file and could not bootup my system. I thought that maybe it was an MBR issue. I did a clean install since I had no rescue disk. The install was fine, except that at start-up it boots through to the WindowsXP splash screen and then my monitor shows a black screen and says "No Video Input, D-sub no signal". A few minutes later, the computer will restart itself and do the same thing all over again. Sometimes, it'll restart and at other times, not.
I examined my video card and there may be three blown capacitors (I'm not sure). I have 'Spotmau Powersuite 2012' and have gotten into the system but cannot find any errors. Since I am able to use my monitor with the 'Spotmau' disc, is my video card really bad?

Chipset South Bridge: VIA KM266 VT8235

I recently changed the battery, and loaded/reset to default in BIOs.
I saw that there is a BIOs update available but I am unable to get it because of a BIOs error: #0x80040707

If your boot disc boots the computer and you have video, then there probably isn't anything wrong with the video card.
Press F8 at bootup and get to the Advanced Boot menu and Last Known Good Configuration. If available, try VGA mode. Or Safe Mode with Networking and Update your Video Driver from the nVidia site.

Edit: My PSU died, so I assume that was the cause of the issue this whole time, a half functioning power supply.

This issue occurs whether I am gaming or not, but gaming causes it to occur more often. In fact, my pc crashed typing this post so I'm currently rewriting it all.

When I go to reboot the computer, I notice CPU fans 1 and 2 (top/back) are off. I'm not sure if that means anything, but yesterday I had to reseat my GPU/ram etc. to get my computer bootable due to this issue. I'm not really sure what to do, I've tried many things. I've had this black screen issue for months now..

RAM is fine, memtest doesn't detect any issues. I have tried using only one of the ram sticks at a time as well. I have tried reseating the GPU, putting it into a different slot. Newest GPU drivers. Temps are good, all under 40 idle. Tried Windows 7, Windows 8. HDD and SSD. Making sure all the PSU cables are fully in their place, along with every other cable in the PC. Have taken out all of the PC parts out and rebuilt my PC. Booted PC without CMOS battery. Installed a mobo speaker, and all is normal there. I've tried using the other GPU video headers.

Furmark gets my GPU to 82c under maximum load. My cpu I believe gets to 64c. I can't find any memory dumps, since it's not a BSOD. But I could potentially be looking in the wrong places, Event Viewer only tells me that the PC turned off unexpectedly.

I'm thinking of sending the GPU to MSI, it's still good for warranty and all but I don't even... Read more

Hi, all! I've had a strange, recurring issue for the past few months. It only has happened three times, and I can't reproduce it. Nothing appears in the event log after this occurs, other than the usual kernel power error from the computer turning off.
This doesn't happen during intensive activities, just regular browsing. What happens is I lose display, and the (empty) disc tray begins to open and close while the computer attempts to reboot repeatedly. I then turn off the power supply, and my motherboard produces code 55-- memory not installed. I bring the computer into the kitchen to work on it, and the moment I plug it in and try turning it on in there, it's fine. I bring it back into my room and use it as normal, until this happens again like a month later.
I've run an overnight memtest and it comes up clean. Same for chkdsk. I'm not getting any regular bluescreens-- while I know that they've occurred in my 3-year-old machine's lifespan, they were unreemarkable one-offs. Things (connectors, mem sticks, graphics card) are re-seated occasionally while dusting, but nothing seems to be connected improperly, especially since the computer functions as intended 99% of the time.
I really have no idea what is happening. I don't have any spare equipment available to swap in and out. Is there any way I can figure out what's going on here?

First of all I'd like to apologize for every grammar mistake I will make as english is not my native language.
Secondly, I want to assure you that I have read multiple similar topics, which none of helped me or I am just not as technically advanced to handle the vast sea of actions and information provided, but I have done more than a few things.

But lets start with the problem:

I was playing a game while listening to music and surfing through youtube meaningless videos when the screen froze. I tried to CTRL+ALT+DELETE to end any of the processes so maybe it would relief laptop of any extra graphical burden, anyway it failed, computer didnt respond to any type of commands, nor the previously mentioned CTRL+ALT+DELETE nor ALT+F4 or ALT-Tabbing into desktop screen.
One thing led to another I pressed once the power button, screen gone black but the music kept playing for some reason. Usually it hibernates and after pressing it again goes to login screen, which did not happen this time. With little choice to make I have pressed the power button for longer period of time so it would shut the system down, and then the nightmare began.

System boots then shows me two options: start normally or start Windows Repair, first results in loading up the a quick flash of blue screen (I cannot see whats written in it) the second one results in Windows loading files then just going into black screen with a cursor on it. In addition keyboard commands are not responding, I ca... Read more

Topic pretty much sums it up.
I cannot boot this laptop in normal/safemode/last known good config etc etc.
Startup repair cannot fix it.  Chkdsk originally found some errors but did not fix the problem, ran multiple times.
Original problem was a BSOD, so I usb'd the hard drive to another pc, and checked for virus's, startup programs etc and found nothing peculiar.  Only problem I noticed is there was no SOFTWARE file in the system32/config folder at all, just the .log etc for them but no actual hive.  So I moved all the hives to a old folder and copied over the ones from the backup folder(april dates), also loaded them up to inspect for malicious issues with none found.  Now the BSOD does not occur anymore, but I get the starting windows screen, then it goes black, then a white cursor appears that is moveable, then it instantly dims and about 10 seconds later the cursor freezes and it auto restarts.  Happens with safe mode, last known good configuration, disable automatic restart etc...
explorer.exe to is listed as the shell within the registry and it is located in the filesystem.
I cannot do an inplace upgrade since windows is unbootable and I would like to not format and do a clean install, thus looking for assistance if anyone has seen this before.
This is Win7 Home Prem x64.

Hey, I bought Lenovo y510p laptop like 2 weeks ago. It is the SLI version of the y510p. The laptop worked just fine when I was playing with it, ran CSGO and Skyrim on Ultra settings over 60 fps. Couple days ago, my friend broke my charger, and I went to Walmart to buy a new one. I bought the Duracell charger which is 90 watts and it was compatible with my laptop. Then I plugged it in, and tried to play csgo but the fps was like from 5 to 15. I have no idea how this happened. I also took off my battery and just tried to play it without it and just charging the laptop, and when I opened csgo the laptop shut down. I already made virus tests and there was nothing in the viruses. Please help me if you can, I really wouldn't want to send this to the warranty since it's brand new and propably gonna take atleast a month. Thank you already!

My guess is that the Charger may not be compatible with that laptop....90watts yes but has it got the correct DC output.

Also you didn't say how your original charger got broken. like was it attached to the laptop at the time?

What could be happening is..when you plug the new power supply in it is not the correct power your PC expects so it disregards it and runs off the battery at lower everything. As when you take the battery out it will not run at all. Easy place for damage is where the power plug goes into the laptop.

I bought one of the first Lenovo IdeaPad y510p. Having a dual gpu made for a lot of gaming fun. Yesterday, the room filled up with the smell of an electrical burn. I checked the underside the Lenovo. It had been hotter. I heard workers outside my window and figured that the smell may come from them. A few minutes later very thick smoke came out of the left air vent and made a column in the air. I quickly pulled out the power cord and battery. Luckily, the house is still standing. I understand that electronics eventually fail. Yet, this seems unsafe and dangerous. What if I weren't in the room to act quickly? There should be some way to report this. The support page to send a message has been down with an under maintenance message for days.

My computer is stuck in a reboot loop. I have tried the different options in the BIOS menu but none work. It's a desktop with XP but i'm not sure which version or which service pack it's running. I don't have an XP disk to boot from. I read a thread on here which seemed to deal with a similar problem but it was for a laptop. I downloaded Ubuntu but I haven't tried running it yet as I would like to know if I can fix things before I re-connect the troubled pc (I only have one monitor and will therefore have to juggle between my working pc). I gather that Ubuntu can help me to recover files on it but is there also a way to get it to work again?

For some reason my Sony Vaio Pc won't reboot completely. The reboot takes me to a black screen with the safe mode options on it. It also counts down 30 seconds to reboot. All the safe mode options do not work.

The only different thing done today was that I downloaded this application: AMI Gif Construction Set Pro from Installed fine on my laptop. Installed it onto my Vaio.

Worked fine, closed the gif program and left for a while. Pc-cillin did an automatic virus scan which turned up nothing. Came back and tried to open up a saved web page. Then the pc stopped functioning properly and I decided to reboot which started the loop over again.

Help anyone?

Usually when it gives you safe mode options it means the computer was shut down incorrectly (correct method is start menu > shutdown). Can you boot normally into windows or does it go straight to the reboot loop?

Hi sifuraga ,
You can initially power drain the system , turning it off removing the ac adapter and battery then pressing down the power button for 12 seconds . Start the machine using the Novo button (page 82) to launch the Novo menu for BIOS set up and set BIOS defaults f9 save and exit F10. Check the BIOS version.
Check how it goes else proceed with uninstalling and fresh installing the Lenovo power mangement tool . Restart and recheck .

Hello 8-forums.

I'm posting on behalf of my little brother since he isn't the sharpest when it comes to computers. Today his computer started freezing and crashing out of nowhere at completely random times. I couldn't pinpoint an activity he was doing which might have caused it.

On top of that a pop-up kept coming up on his screen about his screen driver having crashed and has been restored. I happen to have the same laptop and I've had this problem for a week or 2 too, but nothing happens when it shows up on my screen (unlike his, where it crashes the computer). His screen now also has blue matrix-like lines all over his screen as a result of todays crashes.

I asked him to send the Zip-file from the DM log collector tool. He only had a BSoD once and he didn't notice the error code. The rest were freezes (forced to restart) and crashes (no BSoD screen).

Hope you can help find a solution to my brothers problem.
Regards Jens and Walther

Hi Snejxjens,

Welcome to the 8forums.

Please remove some files to increase the free space to at least 10-15%.
Every partition needs at least 10-15% free space so Windows can do its thing in the background.
Less free space could cause BSOD's

Please remove / disable items from the startup in taskmanager
These programs could interfere with the boot process giving you trouble and increase the boot time.

Please uninstall everything of Nvidia using Display Driver Uninstaller and install new drivers from the manufacturer.

Have you updated your video card drivers with the latest drivers from the Nvidia website?  Have you monitored your GPU temperatures to see if either of your GPUs are overheating?  You can try using GPU-Z to monitor your GPUs while gaming.

Hi Guys, I have Lenovo Y510P with Windows 10 and i recently installed a new MyDigitalSSD 256GB in the M.2 slot (instead of the 24GB cache ssd) and i'm using the ssd as my main drive for OS and programs. I'm getting reandom freezes during regular operation, I can still move my mouse duriing those freezes but that's it, it won't unfreeze unless I do an hard reset.. Those freezes happen only when the OS is running from the SSD, when I'm I run a copy of that OS from the HDD, it doesn' happen ad everything works. Before installing the ssd, every cache software was uninstalled and i even tried a fresh new clean win10 install on the ssd but the freezes still happens. I read and tried LOTS of solutions (checking for errors in the ssd, disabling SLI, disabling LPM, etc.) but nothing helps. I'm really desperate for a solution, Doesn any one has an idea on what is the problem?

what i understood is that slot you got there isnt meant for a big SSD :/ so thats probably why os freezes some times it's a cache slot meant for small sized ssd cache drives if understood it right.

I have the lenovo y510p (59370015). It has a disk drive in the Ultrabay. Does this mean that there is no Nvidia graphics card in the laptop? If this is the case, then why are there a bunch of Nvidia files on it? If this is not the case then how do I get the card working, I see it with a Error Code 43 in device manager.

I purchased my Y510P back in Q2 2014, it was already on Win 8 when I purchased it. Everything was working fine even after the  SLI issue with  Win 8.1 which was fixed through a BIOS update that was available here in their product support page. During that time I worked more on other things and didnt really notice anything about the GPU and its update. I was able to update my laptop to Win 10 (back in Q4 2015) and I'm currently unsure if it already installed the anniversary update. Recently, I tried some few games and noticed that the second GPU seems not be working during any games I've launched. I ran Unigine Heaven Benchmark and seems that the SLI is detected, checked the device manager both hardwares are detected, and updated to the latest GPU driver. But still seems to be not working. Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Dear Lenovo family! I have bought this laptop (Y510P) around the end of December 2013. I have just decided to write these after long time of having issues with gaming. Also tooday I have just changed my Hard drive to SSD with booting windows 10 64bit from scrach hoping that it would all come to an end however it did not. -I have updated all the software, drivers etc. I have uploaded a RAR folder including my Nvidea system information, speccy system screen shot and all the logs from event viewer.  Now here is the problem I am having. When I start playin a game (For instance CS:GO) at first it is all good:-As soon as I run the game SLI gets activated.-Fans starts getting faster and both graphic cards getting warmer.-After 10-15 minues of gameplay, game freezes, screen gets minimized for 3-4 seconds and eveything freezess then games screen comes back and another 1-2 seconds game freezes then starts back on.- Problem repeates after another 10-15 minutes of game play. What  could be the problem?Could it be CPU speed is not properly working?Could it be because of the Graphic cards? I will be waiting for your help! Thank you all!

I've suddenly been afflicted with BSOD's on my Lenovo Y510P running Win 8.1. Everything was fine until about 2 weeks ago and then I started experiencing multiple BSOD's to the point that I had to boot in SafeMode. After doing some research, it looked like the issues were related to video (NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M) and wireless/bluetooth drivers. I upgraded all of those and everything was fine for a week until this morning when I got another BSOD. After looking for the bug check that it reported, I stumbled on this forum and saw some excellent responses so I thought I'd give it a whirl. I downloaded BlueScreenView and ran that and I've attached the output. I have also attached output from the MiniToolBox tool. I also tried to upload the mini-dump files but I get a message saying I'm "not permitted to upload this kind of file" but I'm happy to do so if I'm allowed to.  Here is a link the output from the Speecy tool as well - Would someone be so kind as to give it a look and let me know your thoughts? Thanks!

Hi folks I'm new to the forums to please excuse me. I'm currently posting from my phone so when my laptop comes on I'll attach the debug file.

Basically I set my laptop to sleep instead of shutting it down and when I went back to resume my work (about 20 hours later) it was running very slow.

I was searching for my 'Calculator' but made a typo so I tried backspacing the letter but nothing happened. Chrome (which I had opened at the time) was unresponsive and so was my taskbar.

I waited a while to see if anything would happen but nothing did so I forced shut down.

I left it off for almost a half hour and when I put it on I got that error 'Unmountable_Boot_Volume' and it needed to restart and so it did but then the error came up again this time it did an automatic repair which lasted a few seconds then it was diagnosing which lasted a few seconds and then I got the following message:

Automatic Repair
Your PC did not start correctly.
Press restart to restart your PC which might sometimes fix the problem. You can also press Advance options to try other options to repair your PC.

I clicked restart and it did.. I got a black screen for a minute or two but I got to log in. But once again everything was moving slow so as the start menu seemed to be working I shut down the laptop. (It's currently off)

Can anyone assist me with this problem?
It would be really good if I can actually find out what's really wrong with my laptop.

P.S. See attachment

Hi there. I'm just hoping that I can find the solution as soon as possible. So I tried playing some casual games yesterday and all of a sudden the game froze and the image started tearing apart. Next thing you know it, the screen went blank. So I force shut down it and reboot, but after the Lenovo logo, the screen goes blank. There's a faint glow, but there's no image or cursor. Could it possibly be that the GPU crashed and there's no graphic to power the display? Or should I try entering Recovery Mode or Safe Mode to switch the display graphic to Intel HD? Besides, how do I enter Safe/Recovery Mode since I'm on Windows 10. Any help would be much appreciated.

Good evening, I will keep this short, I have a Lenovo ideapad y510p with Windows 8.1 (I got it with 8.1, did not upgrade from 8) . I noticed a problem yesterday, where I cannot adjust the screen brightness. If I use the keyboard commands (Fn + Up and Fn + Down) The slider appears on the top left of the screen, as always, but does not ?slide? It stays static.  If I move the slider on the Setting menu, I can slide the value but the brightness does not change and the value is not reflected on the slider on the top left of the screen. I am not sure when this happened for the first time.

Hi Guys, This is something that has been bugging me for almost a year now and I've just been really lazy to solve the issue. The problem is because for some reason, unknown to all except Lenovo, they decided NOT to support Windows 10 for a couple of the laptop models that they had in their product line when W10 was launched. Hey everyone,
I bought a Lenovo Y510P laptop yesterday and it is extremely slow. It takes quite long to start up, simple tasks such as opening the control panel will freeze it for a about 30seconds. I haven't dared putting any demanding software on it (apart from Chrome and McAfee (paid subscription)).  My 6-year old Toshiba P300-17R is faster, which is completely ridiculous. I have no idea why it is this slow. Could anyone point me in the right direction for fixing this annoying problem?

A:Lenovo Ideapad y510p - memory upgrade

They're RAM sticks, not cards, and they're fairly easy to change out. I would suggest looking for something in the 1866mhz speed, though I think you need lower voltage memory. So I'd get something 1.35v or lower.

Hi all. I just bought my Y510P from a guy on craiglsist who had barely used the laptop. (Like turned it on once and then put it in the corner for a year and a half)  When I got it, the guy had restored everything to the factory settings which was just Windows 8.1. My first problem is that the computer keeps defaulting to use the HD 4600 instead of the 755M that I have set as the default graphics card in NVIDIA Control Panel. I disabled the 4600, but then the computer was super slow. Any idea why this is happening? My second problem is that I can't find anything to speed up the fans so that the computer will automatically overclock the i7. I'm tempted to slowly force it to overclock and have the fan speed increase with the temperature, but I'm afraid that I'm going to break something that way.  If anyone knows of a way to control the fan speed then that would be great. Thanks. Computer specs: Lenovo Y510Pi7-4700MQ8GB RAM1TB HDD24GB SSD (PCIe)Intel HD 4600 Graphics and GT 755M

If you mean the factory recovery files try Lenovo for a recovery disc set if available. If you mean for the OS alone just download the MEDIA CREATION TOOL from microsoft which you will use to download the OS installer. As to drivers go to the download site for your unit to download them.

I never had this problem before until recently I noticed that my fan was making this loud buzzing noise. It was bearable at first. I thought that the fan might be dusty inside because I haven't cleaned it ever since I bought it. Last week, I tried to open the laptop so I can check why it is making that loud noise. I saw that the fan was dirty. I tried cleaning it. When I turned on my laptop, it was still making that loud buzzing noise. So I just ignored it. After a week, It suddenly got louder. It didn't sound normal anymore. I tried restarting the laptop but it still makes that noise. Its annoying. I took a video so you can hear what my fan is making.  It just keeps doing like this even if my laptop is just on stanby, like I'm not doing anything with it. This is what it sounds like when I did the Dust Removal tool on Energy Management.   Since I kept using the Dust Removal tool.. Now its making this weird noise, like the fan is getting stuck on something. I don't know what to do anymore. Its been 2 years since I bought this laptop so I don't have anymore warranty and I never had problems with my laptop except for today. I have never dropped it so I don't know why this is happening to my laptop. Please help me.

A:Lenovo Y510P fan making really loud noise.

Hi there, Xbelleh -
Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.
This video would leave me to believe that a piece of paper or other debris shifted inside and is now coming in contact with the fan blades.
When you use the dedusting cycle the debris is temporarily being blown out of the way of the blades.  What I would do is use a can of compressed air and blow out the fan assembly from both directions and see what is blown out.  Compress air is available at any office supply store, electronics store or big box discount store.  When using the compressed air use short bursts as an extended burst may damage the fan's bearings from over revving.
Also, when using the laptop take note of its position.  If the fan is quiet on a flat surface, but is noisy when sitting at an angle like on your lap.  That might be a good indication that the fan bearings are failing.
Worst case scenario is you need a fan replacement.  The fan is something that the owner can replace if you are comfortable working inside it.
As a do-it-yourself project it can be fixed in an afternoon. At this point I would try the compress air and we'll go from there.

So this morning I woke up like usual and start my laptop up. It took a while like usual to boot up then it went straight to the your computer needs restarting blue screen and I thought hmmm this happened a few times and usually gets fixed. This time it went not to the home lock screen but the trouble shooting blue screen after picking my language and type of keyboard. Then it goes to two options "advance options" or "shutdown" I go to advance settings then there were 3 more options. Refresh settings, reset settings or advance options so I chose refresh cause I didn't want my files to get erased since I haven't backed them up yet. I click refresh and a message says that my drive where Windows is installed is locked. And it told me to unlock it and try again. So how do I access this? I forced shutdown but the same thing happens for a few times. Now I'm worried about this problem. Can anyone help me before I actually have to reset my laptop?

Hi all. I recently obtained a used lenovo y510p from a friend with the following configurations. Windows 8.1 ProSLI capable with 2 geforce 750M cards6gb RAMItb Hard disk2gb dedicated video memory. It plays games at decent speeds with medium settings but I get different errors from each of the 3 games I've tried. For dragon's dogma dark arisen, the game suddenly slows down for a few minutes and picks up speed again after a few (maybe 5) minutes. With mass effect 2 the game screen hangs, while sounds and music continue as normal. ctrl alt deleting and pressing esc will make the game proceed as if nothing ever happened. Finally, for the witcher 3: wild hunt, I get the windows display driver has stopped responding error. The games are properly purchased and as far as i know, so is the OS. I've tried all nvidia display drivers between and including 347.09 to 364.72. I've tried closing all other apps, and ending all nv processes in the task manager. I've also tried different power plans and different nvidia power management modes. I've been monitoring the temp with HWmonitor and it usually tops out at around 81c which I understand is fine for this particular laptop. I even have a targus chill mat to help regulate the temp. Lastly, I've spoken to my friend and he doesn't remember having those issues at all, but he never managed to game with the laptop very often. Any help would be appreciated, this is my first lenovo product. I pereviously owned a dell xps.

I have a Lenovo Y510p with 2x GT 755m cards in SLI. When playing games like WoW the MAX GPU temps on Card 1 reach 90°C. On Card 2 85°C.At this point the game starts to stop responding. I hope you people on this forum can help - I love my Windows 2000 computer, but I did a really dumb thing.Computer was giving me no problems, still I did an antivirus scan using Avast, as I have done over the years with no problem before. However this time the results showed no viruses, but a long list of "medium threats" which the program then isolated into it's chest. Looking through the list of threats- it seemed they were not threats at all but some .exe files of programs I had for years on the computer with no problem, and many Microsoft files that had been on the computer for years and seemed important for the OS to run. Before the antivirus completed it's scan, I was warned by a "Windows File Protection" pop-up message that moving these files could make the OS unstable, and I very stupidly clicked yes - blindly believing the antivirus program would do the right thing (I had never seen that Windows File Protection" message before- should have Googled it). When I realized my mistake and tried to move all the files out of the chest and restore them back in place, the antivirus program was unresponsive and so I closed it and turned off the computer for the night. Now starting the computer results in a reboot cycle/loop. Tried F8 to restore to last known good configuration, also safe mode - still get the reboot cycle. Tried putting in the Win 2k OEM CD (to repair?) but the computer doesn't boot from CD (probably from floppy drive), so no success there.Any suggestions or h... Read more

A:Help please! Reboot cycle/loop problem- all my fault

Change the boot order in the BIOS. The CD/DVD drive must be listed before the HDD. If you have a floppy drive too, the order should be - floppy, CD/DVD, HDD.Are you sure your Win2K CD is bootable? If it's not, you'll have to create the floppy disk set & boot from them. you're able to boot to the command prompt, you can try running SFC (system file checker). If that doesn't fix the problem, you'll probably have to do a "repair installation". Be aware that if you do a repair, you'll lose all updates so you'll have to reinstall SP4, Rollup 1, IE6, etc. I'm not sure if these are readily available from Windows Update or if you'll have to hunt them down. version of AVAST are you using? I'm guessing it's an old version because most AV software has dropped support for Win2K.

I am working on a clients computer but need some help. They have an XPS 8100 Dell that was running Windows 7. The user upgraded the machine to 10, but without updating any drivers or the like. From what the client tells me, it caused the (seemingly) common Windows 10 Flashing screen problem, but then further devolved into a boot loop. The machine POSTs, then tries to boot 10, but then automatically enters a self diagnostic and brings you to the diag screen.

None of the options work - There don't seem to be any system restore points, it fails at restoring windows, and safe mode also cannot boot it goes into the diagnostic mode. I went into the CMD which labels the main drive as the "X" drive - I ran the boot manager and tried to fix the MBR and scan for windows installs. It found one OS - Windows 7, not Windows 10. Upon going back to the diagnostic screen, a new option appeared - Boot to which OS. I tried to boot to Windows 7, and it does, but gives an error and never seems to boot any desktop only the login screen and task manager. I even tried to force windows 7 into safe mode, but it also fails.

At this point I'm not sure what to do. Maybe insert the windows 7 disks to restore it?

Please let me know I need some help!

This has been an exhausting day! I've been trying to figure this out for quite awhile.

To start, I'll post some information.

My webcam was working fine yesterday! I tried doing a system reboot to the the week before that and alas the issue prevailed. My internal webcam is not being registered by my laptop!

So the solution that seemed obvious enough was to check my drivers, update them if necessary. Which I ended up doing. Alas, the issue prevailed.

Checking the device status, I received the error "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)

To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer." The device is currently registered as 'Unknown device' as I uninstalled the driver. I was receiving the same error when I did have the original drivers though.
Looking up what the error means, it meant that the device was disconnected. I'm not entirely sure how this could happen though with an internal laptop. I also need to get a new copy of the drivers (Which don't seem to be registering the device upon installation).

Anyway any help would be appreciated as this has become a huge headache for me, and i just want to skype with my friend!

A:Need help with internal webcam drivers for Lenovo Ideapad y510p.

It might be that the webcam has failed if everything else has been can take it somewhere and have it looked at but im not even sure they can be fixed when they go. it might be cheaper just to get an external webcam such as a logitech.

From about 3 weeks ago, my Lenovo Y510p (GT 750M Sli, purchased in 2013) started to make this weird grinding/buzzing sound at random times on the CPU side of the fan. It was barely noticeable if I had headphones on at first, but starting from the second week the noise and vibration of it grew louder. After doing some research for possible fixes, I have tried the method openining Energy Management and running the Dust Removal feature to temporary solve the problem. However, that method only worked for about a week, and starting from the third week the buzzing remains very consistent even after I run Dust Removal several times. Does anyone here know what is the problem exactly? I know for other models, people have been able to solve the problem by updating their BIO driver provided by the website. But all Y510p users seen to have that problem early enough to just get a refund or send it back for exchange/repairment using their then still active warranty. I would like to know if there's any way that I can fix this without having to spend money for the fix when it is proven it is the company side issue since even fresh new purchases of the same model ran into the same exact problem within days.

Hi Guys,

This is something that has been bugging me for almost a year now and I've just been really lazy to solve the issue.

The problem is because for some reason, unknown to all except Lenovo, they decided NOT to support Windows 10 for a couple of the laptop models that they had in their product line when W10 was launched. Just my luck, my Lenovo Y510 (Model No - 20217) is among those unsupported PCs and hence there are certain features that no longer work.
(Laptops-and-netbooks :: IdeaPad-Y-Series-laptops :: IdeaPad-Y510p-Notebook :: 20217 - Lenovo Support (US) As you can see, nothing for W10)

PC Specs:
- Lenovo Y510P (Model No - 20217)
- NVIDIA GeForce GT755M
- Windows 10 Home, Version - 1511
- Intel Core i7-4700MQ CPU @2.4GHz

The issue that I'm facing is that my Webcam just wont work. Issue that I can see:
- The light adjacent to the webcam on the laptop keeps coming on and going off and then finally just stay off (each time I try to use the camera)
- Skype and other applications that need my camera can no longer detect it. Initially, my video keeps on appearing and disappearing until it finally just goes and stay disconnected, as though I don't even have a camera.
- Error message on my Camera app when I try to open it: "We can't find your camera. Error code - 0xA00F4244(0xC00D36d5)
- When I go to my Device Manager, there is no list called "Imaging Devices" as a whole.

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p and it has erratic BSOD behavior, usually after sleep mode, but not always. Would love to get to the bottom of it and appreciate any help you can provide!

I've attached the necessary file as per the BSOD posting instructions.

A:BSOD on Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p, after sleep mode usually

Only 48 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 60 to 80 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Don't worry about the specific number, it's just important that you have checked and installed any updates that were available.

The memory dumps blame usbccgp.sys, but MSINFO32 lists ks.sys (kernel streaming of video driver)
And this seems to happen during a power down event (such as power off/hibernate/sleep/etc)

Finally, what applications do you delay using Startup Delayer?
What USB devices do you have connected?

I'm concerned about your version of Diskkeeper as it dates from Jan 2013 - well before Win8.1 was released.
Can you update it? If not, please uninstall it while we're troubleshooting.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

I have a Lenovo 510p running windows 8.1. It did an automatic update after restarting it showed a BSOD for less than a second then went into startup repair. It said "Startup repair couldn't repair your PC" it had a spot to display a log file location but it was blank. When I tried to refresh it said "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again". Reset said "Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing". System restore said "To use system restore you must specify which Windows installation to restore." I only have one Windows installation. When I ran chkdsk it said ( when I did chkdsk /f it said ( I ran the Lenovo system restore and it restored back to factory settings, but still won't boot. If I connect the drive to another computer I'm able to see all the files but it won't boot on the other computer either.
Thanks in advance,

Hi everyone, I've had a Lenovo Y510P with SLI 750m's for about 1 year and 3 months now. 2 weeks ago (around the time I upgraded to Windows 10). My laptop suddenly is unable to boot for the most part. When I press power, it hangs on the initial blank screen, with no logo pop-up. I have managed to get it to boot before, just simply by restarting over and over, but it's been 3 days and no luck now. It simply stays on a blank screen (no backlight), though the keyboard and power button light up. Here are the steps I've taken to troubleshoot:-> Removed battery, unplugged AC, performed "fleeting power removal" by holding the power button for 60 secs (have done this multiple times)-> Removed RAM, changed slots etc. When there is no RAM, the machine will continuously reboot-> Removed HDD, reseated-> Removed 2nd GPU. When the 2nd GPU is plugged in, the fan will try and spin every so often-> Unplugged connectors to wi-fi module-> Restarted many times-> Pressed the NOVO button, it simply brings it to the blank screen Any advice would be much appreciated. The laptop itself is in good condition, and has little physical ware. Unfortunately it's no longer under warranty, and I'm sure the cost of sending it in is quite high.

I have a lenovo ideapad y510p and everything was fine until for I thought I'd do the battery reset in the lenovo energy management,at first the battery was dead and laptop wouldnt turn on,,I found one way around this which is that first I take the battery out and then insert the ac adapter, the laptop turns on then I put it in hibernate while I insert battery after which it seems to charge but only after I do these steps, but if I take the adapter out and insert it back in,it would stop charging.this is all because of the lenovo energy management software battery reset.I've uninstalled it but it doesnt work.any suggestions?I'm guessing one of the steps after full charge during the battery reset the battery gets drained where it says "plugged in and not charging" until it reaches zero is the problem.

As I explained in another thread. When I attempt to boot into Safe Mode, only a black screen appears and rarely the safe mode background flashes for a second. I'm able to move my cursor around, but that's it. I do not understand why this is happening and what I can do to remedy this situation. I would appreciate any type of help. Thank you.

A:Lenovo y510p Windows 8.1 Safe mode won't boot.

I'm wondering if the graphics adapter used on the computer is not compatible with the generic VGA drive Windows 8.1 uses for safe mode. Has the driver for the graphics adapter ever been updated? I noticed this on the specs. If you have the model with the two adapters, it's possible they conflict with the safe mode video driver. I saw a post where the computer had both an Intel and Nvidia adapter.

Hello, I only found out after purchasing the Y510P laptop that it for some strange reason does not support 5Ghz networks, only 2.4Ghz. This results in me having insanely slow connection every single night around peak hours (7-11pm), and I'm unable to do anything like watching movies, playing games or download stuff. Does anyone know exactly how to upgrade the wireless card on this laptop so it supports 5Ghz networks? Do I have to go out and buy another wireless card, or is it software upgrades like drivers only? I'm not a computer major so a walkthrough would be appreciated. Thanks.

It sometimes makes a small vibrating sound which goes away when i give a gentle tap on the computer.  However today i wanted to move my user from my ssd to my seagate after that everything went south. I needed to start fresh again so i started recovery which worked until a while later when it said the recovery didnt work. After that i clicked to proceed to windows. You will loose all created data encrypted by these keys.Press F12 to clear the TPMPress ESC to reject this change request and continue" I pressed F12 because i wanted to recover my computer or it wont recover(in my knowledge). After i pressed F12 my computer went into a boot loop. Any fixes?

Hi All,

New here & 1st post.

My laptop crashed on shut down. When I turned it on again, it took me to system recovery and started reinstalling everthing. I left it to run overnight. In the morning, I was presented with a logon screen to select the users. There are two, one is administrator, the 2nd is "other user" (for new user I am guessing), if I click administrator, there is a problem that says "You have been locked out, contact your administrator" and if i click other user, it will make me type in username and password, but i have not created such thing. I then restart the system, it says "Preparing windows for first use" and brings me back to the logon screen again with the option of choosing the same users.

In between all that, I remember coming across an error saying "please logon as administrator to complete installation". I can't logon as adminstrator as its been locked/disabled.

Anyone came across the samething or have a solution to this?

I'm trying to reformat my brothers laptop, but it not working.
I prepared the recovery discs. There are 4 in total, and 1 other disc with drivers and applications.
I started the recovery, inserted 3 discs, after that it said it was complete, and i clicked finish.

It will go into Windows 7's desktop, and this Toshiba configuration thing will appear that installs stuff. After it completes, the computer will reboot to complete the installation, but it will restart, and do it all over again. and the loop continues. after a while it will present the screen that selects the users. there are 2, one is administrator, the other is new user (i think), if i click administrator, there is a problem that says "You have been locked out, contact your administrator" and if i click new user, it will make me type in username and password, but i have not created such thing.....

I have done the system restore again, but did the same thing. Every time windows starts it says preparing windows for first use....
Now i have shut the computer down, and leaving it for tomorrow.

Dear Bleeping Computer

New user here - and you might be my only hope...

Had a feeling encountered malware today. Quickly closed down IE and ran MalwarebytesAM with its Chameleon which picked up a couple of threats and seemed to remove them. Then ran TDSSKIller as well just to be on safe side. I'm running Win7 64.

However then Windows Firewall turned itself off for some reason. Tried uninstalling then reinstalling Microsoft Security Essentials only for it to get locked in an infinite restart loop with the error "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart in one minute" This happens in both normal and safe modes.

Found my way here where others seem to be having similar issues and d/l and used FRST tool to produce a log below. However despite going into advanced boot options, couldn't find the 'Repair My Computer' option, and putting Windows 7 disk in again - there was no repair/upgrade option to get me into System Recovery and give me the Command Prompt. Log file then just taken by clicking on the FTST64.exe in the flash drive.

Hello, Last week i received my Y510P from a reseller here in Lithuania, and ran into a *slight* problem. When playing more demanding games (though i wouldnt call borderlands 2 a very demanding game), the screen freezes and the sound hangs. Occasionally the display would turn pitch black (sometimes the drivers just reset with screen backlight still on). I checked memory, sshd, cpus and main gpus for errors, but none were found. I have no idea how to test the ultrabay though... Temps are pretty high, but definetly not critical. CPU runs below 85c under load, main gpu runs at around 75c, only ultrabay runs hotter, but i've seen people saying that theirs run above 95c and it still works fine. Mine usually crashes when it reaches 91-93c. It reaches those temps in about 30-60 minutes, steadily heating up.  I tried removing and re inserting, but it didnt have any effect. Im stumped. Sorry for rambling on so long. I hope somebody can help me pinpoint the problem, and maybe help fix it. Hey guys, I am having a weird problem with my Lenovo Y510P, there's a LVDS cable which connects the motherboard to the lcd. When I disconnect this cable, the system boots perfectly and I can see the desktop when connected over hdmi to TV. However when I connect it back, the laptop doesnt even POST, no lights, no fans, nothing. I am unable to find the source of this problem, is it the LCD that's dead or some component on the motherboard? A short somewhere?

I am currently running the 358.50 version of GeForce drivers, however there are newer ones available (361.43). For some reason when I tried updating, my system got really unstable and eventually blue screened with KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE. When I rebooted it was fine, until I tried to use a graphics intensive application (Photoshop) that caused my laptop to switch from Intel HD to NVidia. My computer locked up and crashed again. I booted into safe mode and rolled back the driver, but I need to install that driver eventually as I use this laptop for gaming and Photoshop.

Maybe another driver needs to be updated? Maybe it's my Intel driver? I couldn't find any issues comparable to mine so I'm assuming there is a conflict I can't find. Thanks for any help you can give me, I don't know much about how drivers work.

A:NVIDIA Driver causes system instability and BSOD in Lenovo Y510P

Exact same thing has happened to me with a Lenovo Y410p. I did a Windows 10 update yesterday and updated my drivers including my Nvidia driver and since then I have gotten three KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE BSOD when running graphic intensive applications like Photoshop or Illustrator. Today I did a fresh install of Windows to see if it fixed the problem and as soon as I tried launching a game I got the elusive orange screen of death with the same error.

Hi,  My ~3 year old ideapad purchased from Newegg seems to have gone south. I have Windows 8.1 installed. Last night I shut it off to bring it to class and when I got to class and tried to boot up, it wouldn't finish starting up, would sit at the logo screen for about 30 seconds before shutting down and starting over. The fans power up like it is going to start. It repeats this loop indefinitely. I tried holding the reset button next to the charger port and still nothing.  Suggestions?  Thanks

Seems like ever since the latest NVIDIA graphics drivers update (I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think it's the case), my screen stays black upon being woken up from sleep or hibernation. I know it's on, and it's not a matter of the computer being slow, because it's not, and even if it were, leaving it on for many minutes and it remains blank, and the power button and keyboard and everything light up and it starts heating up, so I know it's doing something. Hitting FN-F2 for the backlight does nothing, so I don't think that's the issue. The only way to resolve it is to hold down the power button and reboot, which **bleep**ing pisses me off because sometimes I have important work up and am forced to lose it. Anyone else seeing this issue? Could it be related to the new graphics drivers, or is this something worse and hardware related? My screen seems A-OK when it comes to everything else. Thank you!

So, a friend of mine asked me to take a look at her computer, but I am at a loss. It persistently and consistently takes between 10 and 20 minutes of blank screen after hitting the Novo button or the power button before anything appears on the screen. The Novo button reaches the bios with no problems and after booting to the OS, the system performs decently. Any ideas? Edit: Keyboard is backlit instantly after hitting either button.

I see where people do a normal shut down or they left their computer in sleep and it died and when they try to reboot they get a black screen. It seems like the first thing they want to do is an Emergency bios flash.
I can't see how the bios could get corrupted from shutdowns or dead batteries. Every instance of thid I have run into has been bad M/B, voltage regulator IC, video card, etc. Has anyone seen where this has happened and it was definitely a corrupted bios?

A:Black screen on reboot problem

While it is possible that a corrupted BIOS could cause this, the absolute LAST thing I would try is a BIOS flash.

Most likely these folks are confusing a BIOS reset (restoring the optimized default settings) with a BIOS flash (changing the BIOS current version to another version). There is very little possibility that the current version of a BIOS, previously working, would need to be replaced. It would just need to be reset.

And true BIOS corruption (unreadable data) is extremely rare. Once again I believe most folks are talking about bad or incorrect BIOS settings. People who overclock their PCs deal with this regularly and think little of it. They just reset and try again.

GC: MSI Geforce 7900gs (fanless)
Ram : 2*1 Go Corsair
Pro: Intel Core2Duo 6600

My problem:

I've just format my computer and re install windows xp. All is ok but when i try to install the graphic drivers from the nvidia site (ver 195.62), my graphic card is seen as Geforce 7900 GTX :-(
I also try with the old cd drivers from MSI and same problem...
I also try to take off the card from the computer and replace it... no change

So I think that is not so bad and that i m able to work with this config... but the other problem is:

When i reboot my computer (windows -> restart), my screen still black when the pc reboot. I can hear the windows startup sound.... I think that my computer boot normally but without the graphic card :-(
When i trun off the PC and turn it on, screen came back and windows appear...

My question is :

Problem with drivers ?
Problem with graphics card ?
Problem with motherboard ?
Problem with alim?

Thank you to have read me and maybe answer...

The computer was in sleep mode for about a week, when I brought it out of sleep mode, I got messages saying that I needed to run a scan for virus threats that could slow down or make my computer freeze up. I immediately started the scan with webroot. In the middle of the scan, the computer froze up and nothing would unfreeze it. I unplugged it, took the battery out, put it back in, and turned the computer back on. It goes as far as the Microsoft xp screen, then before it gets to the user screen, it goes black, turns itself off, turns back on, i get the gateway screen, xp screen and it just keeps looping.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD drive if you are prompted. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.Type: chkdsk /rIt's important to have a space before the "/".To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

Not computer savy enough to know how to get to regedit to repair. Also running regcure and regbooster --- don't know if one of these somehow turned these keys off in registry. Please help.

My friends computer (which I have been tasked with fixing) is stuck in a reboot loop. Right after the Windows splash screen it just starts all over again. Safe mode get stuck on the agp440 driver. I have tried every option under F8 with no success. I have went into the recovery console and rebuilt the boot sector/MBR and about every other option it allows. I have even tried Microsofts answer (875350), although i now know this pc is not on sp2. I am getting ready to do a repair install and as a last ditch effort i thought i would check here for any ideas. As far as what started the issue, I have no clue, my friend says she thinks she caught a virus. Don't even know what leads her to that suspicion.

I'm running an IBM with XP Pro and an intel p4 processor. My system had locked up during the day and on reboot it goes into a page about experiencing a problem and would I like to
start in safe mode
safe mode with network
safe with command

Last known good
Start normal

Any one just sets it back into a loop to this same page. I've pressed F8 during this session and when I 'disable auto restart' a message stating
"un mountable boot volume"
message comes up on the blue screen

Any help is obviously appreiciated

I was trying to get my sister's computer running. It is the worst case I have ever seen. It was giving me pop-ups trying to open control panel. It will not let me run Spybot, Malwarbytes anti malware. Folder options are gone from control panel, among other things. I tried a to run these programs. Went into safe mode.....would not let me run them there. I downloaded CCleaner in safe mode and ran the cleaner.(not registry cleaner) Now it's stuck in a reboot loop. What can I do to get it back to at least booting? Any help would be great. Never seen this before.

This is XP media center edition

When I first got there it was popping up "my documents" from a user who didn't even use the computer about every 5 minutes.

That sound pretty bad. I don't know exactly what you have but I often use HiJackthis to solve odd virus/security breaches on pcs.

And if your not able to boot at LEAST into safe mode:

1-looks like you'll have to scan it with another computer.

2-backup the important information and re-install

i just installed win 98 and win xp dual boot on my pc.
win 98 starts just fine but when i try win xp it either keeps on rebooting my pc without any error screen or it goes to win xp startup screen and does not go any further. if i try safe mode or other options my pc restarts.
please help.

A:win xp reboot loop

I know windows has a feature where the PC will auto restart if there is a flaw in the system. R-Click my computer and choose properties --->then select advanced---->choose settings where it says startup and recovery---->and then de-select automatic restart and apply the changes.
If this is the issue you should recieve an error message instead of having your PC restart.

Hopefully I am "wrong" so this doesn't turn into a major problem.

Good luck.

Hey all, having an issue with my comp. First I ran into the nice Windows/System32/Config/System file missing or corrupt error. No clue what caused it and got tired of trying to fix it as it was the second time it has happened in the last few months. So I reloaded Windows XP on the comp.

It came up fine, found the folder after it came up with my important docs in it. Downloaded AVG and SuperAntiSpyware which I normally run. It ran fine last night, today I restarted the comp, and now it is caught into a reboot loop. It doesn't matter if I do it in Normal, last good config, or safe mode, the results are the same. Windows splash screen comes up, then it reboots.

Would love to drop Vista on it since my new laptop came with it (least I could try a whole new set of problems), but apparently it has this "Restore your system without discs" thing on the laptop. Cause I guess they assume I trust Microsoft so much that I don't need a physical disk. So no clue how to get the software off there and on to my desktop. Last I knew you could use the same windows software on one laptop and one desktop.

Anyway any help to get this machine up and running again would be grateful.

A:Reboot Loop

You can run one copy of Windows if you have one license for it. I don't know of any provision that has ever said you can run it on one desktop and one laptop.

Since you must have an XP install disc try booting with that CD and doing a Repair installation. Reboot loops are generally due to corrupt system files, but malware can cause it in some cases.

I can't post the required info about my machine because it is in a state where i can't repoduce anything, all i have is a description:

My machine reboots after POST and right before loading Windows. I have exhausted all known methods (that i know) so i decided to do a clean install of XP. After the machine loads up past the post and gives me the message of booting from the CD..... Literally after that 5th "." the machine will just reboot itself and this would go on infinately. BEFORE i attempted to do the clean install, it would give me the option of safe mode....last good configuration etc etc....but each of them would immediately lead to the machine rebooting itself. I have tried to replace the RAM with new one, same result.. new hard drive, same result, took out video card and use onboard vga, same result. Everything inside the system looks fine and all the fans are running, so if anyone has any suggestion before i take a hammer to this machine, please chime in :)
what upsets me is that the machine will let me run from the installation cd, and reformat my drive, then load the files, it gives me the sense that everything is in order (from a hardware perspective) and then windows installation would need to do a reboot to continue the installation and i would find myself in this infinate loop. :(

the machine was built by me about a year and half ago. Its a Pentium D with 2g memory in a coolmaster case, 500g HD and nVidia card.

A:PC reboot loop

Have you tried with only one stick of ram? If not, then try that and see if that helps. If not, swap another single stick in there and try it. Report back with results. Can you get in to the bios and check temperatures and voltages? If so, do that and report back here with those results.
