Logethica's (Free) Security Configuration

Q: Logethica's (Free) Security Configuration

Additional Security/Privacy Software:
-Glasswire (Used as Standalone H.I.D.S)
-O & O Shutup 10

I perform NO system/image backups as all files are kept on USB, and I regularly enjoy doing a system reset and starting from zero (roughly every couple of months)
I Initially block Automatic OS updates/Patches (with O&O Shutup 10 & Firewall Rules) so that I can check forums for potential issues before reactivating the service(s) approx 48-72 hrs after their release.
All Microsoft Bloatware uninstalled or deactivated (Including Cortana)

Hi, I downloaded AVG Free, it said to check for updates.
When i do, It says it can't connect to server. I went to the
settings for updates, and i've done everything it says. I still can't get it to update. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Maybe try uninstalling it and reinstalling it?

But first, make sure your firewall is not blocking AVG from updating!

Securalive free vs 360 Total Security vs Panda Free

A:Securalive free vs 360 Total Security vs Panda Free

360 Total Security Essentials is all that is needed. With Avira and Bitdefender engines enabled, RAM usage is high... but only when interface is open or scanning. It will only be a real problem if user always has interface open.

Protection far outweighs the RAM usage. Plus, 360 Essentials is very user friendly.

I had previously installed NORTON SECURITY and accidentally uninstalled it. It would not open after re-installation. Now AVG free and AVAST free will not open from download. Win 7pro

A:AVG free AVAST free NORTON SECURITY will not open

first off you should only have one anti virus program installed on your computer. did you use norton's uninstall tool ? run the tool , restart , run the tool the second time.

Hand down CIS. Best free prevention and lock down security software ever, but this software is for advanced users only that knows what they are doing because by tweaking you can make CIS outperform other antiviruses easily.

WARNING

As I've test the incompatibilities, patches, and scripts on my virtual machine, I have made tweaks to this configuration both concerning system and settings. The tweaks I've made to this system are critical and will cause system instability if not configure automatically. In addition to that, I've made custom scripts made with AutoHotkey to optimize the compatibility of some of my security software. These scripts are unique to each software and are converted to an executable. If you wish to copy my configuration, PM me or do extensive research as the scripts and settings that I made for my configuration are critical to compatibility and optimization.

=> An exemple : severals days ago, I received a mail with a zip file.
Then,
- I 've turned on Try&Decide (From Acronis True Image 2016),

I opened it with a text editor => js downloader very very obfuscated (not recognized by Kaspersky few days ago)

I downloaded the exe file from the url seen

This is my first more than one real time configuration. I know how Advanced System Care has been with reputations in the past and the extra junk it installs with it. I only use the realtime part of the program from DNS and Webpage protection only as an extra with performance monitor. Avira and Zemana are the ones I depend on. ASC did save me from an issue about 2 years ago that ccleaner and others couldn't resolve. Can't remember the basics but System Care fixed what the others couldn't. 3 weeks ago a keylogger was discovered and I had paypal/twitter hacked. The only damage was the twitter account luckily. So now I'm worried about security of my PC

I will be needing some replacement options in a month as everything I'm using is freeware currently. Let me know if there is anything I should add or change. I have been running this setup for about a week with no conflicts.

After running various programs the last week. Nothing is showing up on my PC as a threat in any way. However something doesn't quite seem right. Everything is top notch, downloads are 100Mb's and ping is 1ms. I can't quite put a nail on whats wrong but the best way to explain it is maybe a "joke" The cursor/pointer has the loading image come up a split second every 2-3 seconds and I'm not sure why. I'm wanting to run some type of registry repair/disk check type tool 3rd party or OS that will find and fix possible issues. I just don't want to los... Read more

Simple and smooth config

I can only suggest you add a backup solution like windows default backup or third party backup solutions - AOMEI backupper, Acronis or Paragon Backup and Recovery. A clean system image backup can help you restore the operating system and files if disaster strikes.I think Super Antispyware is obsolete in that config you could consider Zemana Free or Emsisoft Emergency kit.Rest is well-covered.

I found myself reading and checking this site a lot when in fact I have loads of studying to do for my medicine exams (just like now) , so I consider Malwaretips as my 'happy place' ^_^

oh, just a word about Bitdefender , I hear that loads of you have problems with it, However at my specific system it runs smoothly and really "photonic " .. so in such a case, would you recommend for me sticking with it or to switch to and buy Kaspersky (given that it also runs smooth at my system) ??

I selected yes (in the last 3 months) because I deliberately ran some malware so I could see how my security setup would react. My last true malware attack was around 2011.

Also, do you guys think I should install a third party firewall and a program like Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit? Or is what I'm using now enough protection?

My poor old PC is maximized in my opinion. 4 Gb RAM and 2.0 Ghz speed. The fan has had some issues and I wish I could get an average new PC or laptop soon.
I'd like someone to recommend me a good firewall that is easy to configure and customize. Windows Firewall is becoming a headache to maintain.
I used to have Comodo Internet Security and Qihoo 360 Total Security but I heard they're very privacy intrusive and so I removed them. Any comments or recommendations on that?

A:OfficerFrankTenpenny's Security Configuration

@OfficerFrankTenpenny Don't worry I have 4GB RAM and only 1.66GHz, as for a firewall, for a light system just stay basic, for backup use AOMEI Windows Backup, Cloning, and Recovery Software it's free I highly reccomend that you remove Advanced System Care (or any IObit product) as they are adware and do more harm than good, stick with CCleaner. Furthermore you should change User Account Control to Always Notify and add SpywareBlaster, it blocks annoying scripts and tracking cookies in the browser blacklist, meaning it's NEVER running unless you run it SpywareBlaster One more thing @OfficerFrankTenpenny why haven't you upgraded to Windows 10

oh, just a word about Bitdefender , I hear that loads of you have problems with it, However at my specific system it runs smoothly and really "photonic " .. so in such a case, would you recommend for me sticking with it or to switch to and buy Kaspersky (given that it also runs smooth at my system) ??
you know I mean protection-wise.

This is my new security configuration.

A:epaaeiz Security Configuration

That is about as light of a config you can get.
I might consider a couple on demand scanners and personally I prefer Zemana Antimalware to MBAM Premium for real time protection.
Windows 10 Security has much improved. +1 for being infection free!
I would consider some type of Data & System back up plans.
Thanks for sharing your config

Hello and Thanks for sharing your config with us I do have a few remarks : add emsisoft emergency kit as an on demand scanner. Add kb ssl enforcer as Chrome extension. Remove system mechanic because it can seriously damage your system / operating system especially its registry cleaner! Use ccleaner , wisecare 365 and privazer and auslogics defrag free instead because they are safe to use!

I am running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate on my desktop (home) and Windows 7 x64 Pro on my laptops. I bring my personal laptop to work which I use for emails and browsing. There is sensitive information that I would not like to share for obvious reasons. I am running into a problem making sure the information is not in "shared" mode while at work. Work has their own network, which I am unable to connect to because the Sys Admin is lazy and will won't provide me a VPN connection directly to the system. So what I have done is use the public WiFi that we make available to our customers and connect through my own VPN off the public WiFi system. I want to make sure that I am not inadvertently sharing documents or other information doing so. When I connect to the network at work I use the "Public" setting. What settings do you recommend?

What makes it more difficult is I have a similar situation at home, in which we have one internet connection through a router coming in and several people use the system. The location of the router is actually upstairs where I do not have access to, I use a Netgear WNR2000 v2 (I rent out rooms in my house), so I am forced to connect to the router wireless. I personally am not a gamer, but one of the tenants is. I almost always use my VPN service at home to connect, but I am unsure if this is the correct set-up. I don't want to share my printers, video, etc. with everyone in the house. I am using Norton 360 for protection with Firewal... Read more

That's my current security configuration.
I excluded every program on other.
I don't encounter any conflict or slowdown.
I continue using MBAM premiume because sometimes it detects Outbound sites not detected by other AV. I don't know if they are really dangerous but I prefear continuing to use MBAM.

Notes:
All the Premium softwares installed are from giveaways.

Update 1: Added Sandboxie and SpywareBlaster
Update 2: Removed Sandboxie. Installed Qihoo 360 Total Security, Zemana AntiLogger Free, and Windows Firewall Control
Update 3: Added Shadow Defender

A:MortenSimpleman's Security Configuration

Real-Time Protection

BitDefender Internet Security 2016
I use mostly default settings, but I disable BitDefender Wallet and BitDefender Security Widget.
On-Demand Scanners

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free and HitmanPro - I perform scans with both at least weekly.
Privacy and Optimisation

CCleaner - I probably run the file cleaner about 5 times a day
I never use the registry cleaner unless I'm sure that there is an issue in the registry, and even then I'm selective about which 'issues' I let it fix and I back up the registry before proceeding.
Backup and Recovery

OS - I always perform a clean install, I don't like restoring from an image.
Documents - Bvckup 2, on a weekly schedule, to my BitLocker encrypted external hard drive.
Browser

Google Chrome, stable release channel.
I do not use the bookmark/setting syncing features.
All settings are default, except for the fact that I've enabled do not track.
I always browse in incognito mode.
The only extension I use is uBlock Origin (yes, it is enabled in incognito).
Password Manager

KeePass, used to generate all my passwords.
Database is stored on my BitLocker encrypted memory stick.
Virtualization

I have a VirtualBox VM in which I test unfamiliar software or software which could negatively affect the configuration of my host OS.

A:ItsWill's Security Configuration

Looks very good to me! Everything is covered, but yet simple and effective. Maybe a bit too overpowered to run ccleaner 5 times a day + using incognito mode, but if you feel fine with it or you think it's needed on your machine, please keep doing it that way. Wish you a malware-free future!

A:DardiM's security configuration

Solid config. However, I'm not so sure that Zemana AntiMalware AND MalwareBytes premium are necessary. If they're compatible, good, especially considering you paid for them. It may make more sense though to pick one, and just use the other as an on-demand.

I run an Untangle universal threat management device as my router, and I have the following "apps" enabled:

Virus Blocker Lite
Spam Blocker Lite
Phish Blocker
Ad Blocker
Intrusion Prevention
Firewall
Reports
OpenVPN
The firewall is stateless, blocking all incoming AND outgoing connections except for ports: 80, 443, 53, 123, 20, 21, 25, and 82. (None of my web/mail/ftp servers are running on this PC!)

The details of all the Untangle apps can be found here: User Guide - UntangleWiki

I do whole disk image backups on a nightly basis, and the backups are encrypted and are stored on my NAS (running a RAID-Z configuration via NAS4Free).

I also do Full Scans with my security software clean my PC with CCleaner weekly. I crave information involving computer software, but more specifically antivirus/security software. I'm always looking to see how certain programs work, what others opinions are, which software vendors to avoid, and getting advice from the professionals.
