hp 9470m external monitor distortion

Q: hp 9470m external monitor distortion

Hello,In my company we have Hp 9470m Laptops. We have noticed some problems regarding the external screen showing some light distortion in a verity of screen types. If I use the DP port it will be O.K but via VGA the problem remains.Using different laptop on the same screen will show a clean picture with no distortion, so the problem is from the HP 9470m. What can I do?Is this issue is something familiar?Thank you.

I am experiencing what I understand to be barrel distortion--the computer screen bows out at the top and sides. I have replaced every component of the system (monitor, CPU, keyboards, cables, mouse) yet the problem persists, though it was not present during the first several months the system opeated at this location. Any suggestions on how to solve the problem?

A:monitor distortion

Did you try to "force" it back to normal using the monitor menu keys on the front? It could be a failing video card/onbaord video or PSU. Are the symptoms reduced if you reduce the resolution? If yes, then it could be the video card straining from an internal fault of itself or a failing PSU.

Not sure if this the right section to ask this so redirect me if its not. I've noticed recently that I have some slight distortion in my monitor. It looks like electrical distortion or signal interference but I can't determine the cause. I mean its REALLY subtle and I only notice it if I'm on a very light colored page like this site or google or anything else that displays a white or light colored background. The distortion looks like ripples in the screen or a slight flickering. My speakers are far enough away from my monitor so I don't think its that. I'd just like some tips on reducing the distortion. Or is my monitor just in need of a replacement? Its a 17" CRT Monitor if that helps.

Try hooking it up to a different pc and see if it still acts like that.. doesn't seem like a graphic card issue to me though (with which I do not mean you cannot post it here, this is probably the most relevant place..)

Hi guys,Hopefully I'm posting this in the right place. This is my first time to Bleeping Computer, but I'll try to be clear and to the point with my issue. My OS is Windows XP ProThis is the problem I'm having:I downloaded and installed a screensaver about 3 weeks ago. Everything seemed fine at first, but then a few days after that I started getting these distorted bars of color flickering on my screen. I removed and deleted the screensaver program, but the bars have since remained. The severity of the distortion on my screen varies from barely noticeable artifacts, to the bars like seen above, to a thick pixelated haze that distorts the entire screen. Sometimes it gets so bad I have to restart the computer because I just can't see what I'm doing anymore. Here's what I've tried so far to fix the problem:1. Checked the monitor connection to ensure it wasn't loose2. Checked the pins on end of monitor cable for any damage3. Replaced monitor with the working monitor of another computer (distortion remained even on new monitor)4. Plugged in a second monitor into second monitor port (distortion then showed on BOTH screens)5. Re-installed display driver6. Ran a registry repair tool that fixed about 463 things within the registry7. Changed the Hz for monitor in display settings (this at first actually cleared it up, but the problem returned later - and now doing it tends to just make it worse)None of these things worked, unfortunately. I honestly don'... Read more

I just purchased a Samsung 920NW monitor for my Dell Dimension 4500 computer (Windows XP Home 2002 Edition). I think I have installed the correct driver, having followed the directions on the installation disk.

Everything on the monitor looks stretched. I have tried to adjust the settings in the display menu, but nothing works. Under the display menu, settings tab, I only have 3 options for screen resolution (800x600; 1024x768; and 1152x864). None of these looks very good. For what its worth under the display menu, setting tab it says Display: Sync Master 920NW on 32 MB ATI Range 120 Ultra.

Any help that anyone could provide to help me get rid of the stretch/picture distortion would be much appreciated.

Greetings tech guys. I come to you with a problem pertaining to my monitor. As of yesterday, April 25th, my monitor began to show a slight hint of distortion. I thought nothing of it at first till the distortion expanded into one even column on the display. I ignored it at first, being immersed in a game. The column expanded into two. Both columns of distrortion were clear cut and even. Not spreading out of the bounds that that plagued my desktop with.

I quickly checked for any questionable processes running, but could not find anything out of the norm. This lead me to fool around with the video settings. Sometimes the distortion would clear completely out for a moment, but return seconds later or in an hour when I altered resolution and such.

The one remedy to get of the distortion I have found to work so far is to unplug the video cable for a seconds and then replug it back in.

My question is, what is going on? Is my monitor, video card, or cables connecting the two starting to break down?

My monitor is a HP w2408 wide LCD. My video card is a GeForce 9300 GE. They video card has the most up to date driver at the moment. My OS is windows vista 64 bit. I currently use the HDMI cable to connect the monitor to my computer. It offers the best picture quality over VGA. I did test the VGA connection out to see if it was solely the HDMI connection. What I got from the VGA was a third column of distortion. I am also placing a link here for you to use and see an actual picture ... Read more

I have a Dell Laptop with Vista. It was working well until my cat walked across the keyboard. Now I have a lot of distortion on the screen. I have reinstalled the drivers for the display and the graphics card, no help. I have also attached an external monitor and it looks fine. Is there any key strokes that would cause this (that the cat randomly hit) and that I can undo, or is the monitor just going bad and the cat not really responsible?

XP Home, Sony PC, MAG Innovision 986FS.

Monitor all of a sudden started showing wavy lines and major distortion (shaking, shadows, etc as well) that certainly LOOKS like interference while in XP. It is there most but not all of the time. However:

a) 2 other monitors connected to PC do not show any problems when connected to computer.

b) The MAG monitor only shows this problem while in XP. There is no distortion, etc. whatsoever on the monitor's pop-up on-screen menu, on the screens during the boot process, or when using an old DOS disk to boot to DOS.

Any idea what this could be?

A:Monitor distortion, not video card, in XP only

Try going to the MFG's website and downloading the latest monitor driver for your model for Windows XP. It sounds to me like it is a driver issue.

After installing a new "True Flat Screen", CRT Monitor. I cannot adjust to get straight horizontal lines. The best I can get is a horizontal "Hour Glass", screen. The monitor has been checked by the manufactuer and is working properly. Could ther be a confiquration or conflict with the video card.
I have removed all speakers and adjusted monitor geometry buttons. Anyone experienced this problem.

This is probably gonna incite a riot of laughter, but I bought an eMachine PC system from Wal-Mart that came complete with flat screen LCD Monitor. It has been working fine for the last almost 2 yrs now, but today, while my wife was using the computer, she noticed some color distortions on the desktop picture. Now, to be more specific, the effect of putting a magnet near a TV will make the colors change. That's what I'm experiencing here. Purple colors are showing in things that were once white and the the usually black letters of the words in my start menu are now surrounded with a purpleish hue. Also, on all of my windows, where the top title bar would normally be blue, there's also a purpleish tint to them now. Any ideas what's wrong???

I searched the forums, but I didn't see anything that seemed to match the problem I'm having. For the last maybe six weeks, I have been having visual distortion problems on my computer whenever I do the following:
Use 3DS Max
Use Google Sketchup
Watch any video file from the hard drive
View slideshows on my computer
Here are some examples of what I am seeing:

My computer otherwise works normally, but while watching a video or trying to use a 3D program, this happens. It happens on both my CRT and LCD monitors. I have checked and double-checked the cords and I've had this video card for years, yet this problem just started happening.

The only thing I can say might be the cause is the installation of 3DS Max, which I did in early June, yet uninstalling the software did not eliminate the problem.

If you've seen anything like this and can offer any information or advice, I'd be very open to it. Thanks in advance.

Hello All,

I'v had a problem with this monitor since last winter. A year would be a good guesstimate.

The monitor in question is a 21" Sun Microsystem GDM-5410 Sony Trinitron Flat CRT Monitor

It started to have those distortions around the edges. They grew bigger and bigger every month. But I'v learned to ignore that, beeing poor and not having any money to spend on a new monitor.

Here are some pictures:
This is my desk, as you can see, no major electronic devices nearby to cause interference
Beside my desk. Computer, fax and subwoofer.
This is my curent desktop. You can see some tiny distortion on the taskbar in the corners. I use black as my background as I cannot use any other color.
Moving on, I changed the background to light blue. You can clearly see the distorion arond the vertical edges of the monitor. Like 4 waves something sticking inside the display.
On this picture, I changed the background to Yellow. Yes, the yellow is barelly visible is it.
Dark blue is the WORST of them all. As you can see...

I'v also made a little movie In this movie I'm switching between my black desktop and some IE window. Notice that each time its on the IE window (or anything else other then the black background) the distortion increases. Notice also how my quicklauch icons become distorted when not on the black background.
I found a little magnet laying around the house and tried hovering it above the affected regions. It had a little effect on... Read more

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

A:Monitor Issues - Laptop Reading Built In Monitor as if it were my external monitor.

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?

This happens in Borderlands 2 and I am Alive. It has happened in some other games as well although I can't recall them. Most other games, it's fine, and this issue never occurs outside of select pc games. It only happens when my character "moves."

For example, in both Borderlands 2 and I am Alive," everything looks great until I look around. It's like a horizontal "bar" or "line" of distortion across my screen. I've tried reconnecting my monitor, and I reinstalled the newest drivers to my graphics card.

I have a GeForce GTX 560ti and my monitor is a Samsung S23A300B 23-Inch Class LED Monitor - Black running on a Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I have a dell laptop that has 1920x1080 resolution. However, i connect it to an external monitor that has 1920x1200 resolution. Basically almost everything i do is on my external monitor which acts as my main primary screen. Thus i do sometimes open some windows or drag a window or so to the other screen like youtube etc to the laptop screen which is the secondary monitor.

My issue at the moment is everything is way too big on the laptop screen. I want to have 1920x1080 resolution but its way too big. I googled what is my resolution on it and it shows 1536 x 864. Can someone tell me how to change this to 1920x1080? I googled what is my resolution on the external monitor and it does show 1920x1200 which is correct.

My external monitor which is my main monitor is fine at the moment with the 1920x1200. Its windows 10 but im assuming this should be very similar to windows 7 to fix this issue?

My desktop icons are always on my external monitor desktop. I had moved the hdmi cable connected to my laptop i believe which caused all my icons from my external monitor to go on the laptop monitor. Also there is even spacing on all of the icons. Has anyone had this happened? I then clicked sort and then it rearranged so there is no spacing etc. However, i then noticed hey why are my icons on my laptop monitor and not my external monitor.

Does anyone know why this happened? When i open chrome and other programs, it does open up on my external monitor though which is my primary monitor. I believe i can just drag each of the icons on my desktop on my laptop screen to my external monitor. So just do this and that fixes the issue right? Or is there a way to have all the icons just move to the external monitor. The reason i ask this is in case the icons just suddenly move to the laptop screen again.

I'm not sure if I should have put this in "Hardware" or not so...
I am, by far, a professional at this so hang in there with me if I confuse you. A few months ago my children broke the screen on my laptop and for a few weeks I was trying to use the External Monitor so it would show up on a monitor my sister gave me. Well I finally got that up and working however, now when I connect my external hard drive to the laptop, it will not show up on the desktop monitor. (The external hard drive is Western Digital).

This external monitor is a new thing for me, actually I knew you could do it but didn't try it as an option until my nephew - who is much younger than me - thought of it lol. Anyway, I have pictures and such on my external hard drive that were put onto the external by the very laptop I am using. I'm not totally sure of the montior I am using, all I can tell you at the moment is it's a Dell. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A135 S266; the laptop has Vista Home Basic (32 bit) and I believe the desktop monitor is running with Vista too but I'm not sure if that's important since it is only serving as a "view." Anyway, I would love some help with why the drive may not be working with this set up.

Thanks,
Kerri

Hi All,
I have an external Envision flatscreen monitor that I have been using attached to my laptop for around a year. I have the monitor displaying on both laptop and the external Monitor. Just recently I had a pc issue which I have rectified and my external monitor since rectifying that issue now displays fuzzy. What can I troubleshoot to find out my issue. I've reviewed the Graphics and Display Properties. It is currently sitting at 1024 by 768, Color: True Color and Refresh 60HZ. The odd thing is that when I am in Display Properties, Settings tab, the left monitor in top is black (this should be my laptop) and the right monitor in the pic, which should be my external monitor is gr3y. When I have pressed on the black monitor, and press Identify it indicates 1. When I press on the grey monitor and press identify, it says it is not active, although I do have an image on my external monitor (fuzzy image). When I click the arrow on 'Extend my Windows Desktop this monitor' the right monitor then is black and when I press on it and press 'Identify' it says it is 1 as well. Is this correct. I know this has nothing to do with the fuzziness but still thought I might see if this is an issue or not.
When I right click on my desktop and go into Graphics Properties - I just get confused as to what this is all about. When I go into Display Tab the Monitor is checked, I can check on any of the others i.e. Notebook, Intel Dual display clone or Extended Desktop. Re... Read more

The model is an old Toshiba 1100.
Thanks
Ned

Hi Guys.

I have a fresh image of Windows 7 on my laptop but it will crash frequently when connect to a VPN.

I have only tested this over WIFI and have yet to test over a wired connection.

I have attached the correct file but I think some files may be missing as I can't seem to get the Diagnostics Tool to do a full run through.

Any help would be appreciated

A:BSOD When Using VPN on HP Folio 9470M

Hi BinaryStar0647.

Your BSODs are caused by Sunbelt Personal Firewall driver, a regular BSOD causer which is disconnected from the market from December 2011.

Seeing your files I realized that the drivers are used by some other thing, GFI Software Firewall.

And it is the driver that is failing here.

Code:

And not alone, but with other components too.

HiNot sure if my post was noticed as posted over weekend and got no reply so I'm trying again.Trouble started with random system restarts anywhere from 2 to 60min after powering on. That lasted a few days. Than it got worse, it was stopping before system boot with error message: motherboard product information missing. After a soft or hard reset (can't remember now) it stopped displaying anything, only LEDs came on and fan run, all lasting about 5s. I tested RAM in other machine, OK. Pulled HD out, no difference. Put a different HD in, no difference. With DC disconnected and battery out I left CMOS battery disconnected overnight. Now it cycles: LEDs and fan come on for about 5s, all off for 1s and tries again. Any help will be appreciated... Best regards

Hi there, I have an issue with non-responsive Brightness Adjustment on my laptop.  Symptom is that brightness does not increase or decrease when adjusting the setting using the FN Key + F9/F10 which are the designated buttons to adjust. There is also no change when I unplug from power outlett (which in theory should make the screen brightness come down). I have installed the latest bio, and have tried looking for new software/drivers, but to no avail... I simply can't reduce the brightness (and it's quite bright - to the point it is uncomfortable to use at night). Suggestions how to handle?

A:Hp folio 9470m Bios Pass

Hi @ARtan-Krasniqi? Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting ! Folio is a lovely business class notebook. Most business class notebooks (including yours, Elitebook and Probook, etc...) have better security than consumer class computers. You will have to contact HP Support for business for assistance on removing the password. Here is how >> http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-phone-assist.html>> http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/business-support.html  HP Business support should be able to send you a customised SMC.bin file and instructions which you can use  to reset the password.  Hope this helps. Let me know if you face any issues.

We have 2 x Folio 9470m notebook. 1st has 8GB of memory with the upgraded ram using https://www.skhynix.com/eolproducts.view.do?pronm=DDR3+SDRAM&srnm=HMT451S6AFR8A&rk=20&rc=module  The 2nd only has 4Gb of memory and want to upgrade - I found this other memory cheaper - https://www.skhynix.com/eolproducts.view.do?pronm=DDR3+SDRAM&srnm=HMT351S6CFR8C&rk=20&rc=module  My understanding is the main difference is the what I already have is the Low Power (1.35V vs 1.5V). Does anyone know if Folio 9470m will work with this 1.5V version of the memory? Thanks for your help.

A:PC3 vs PC3L memory for Folio 9470m

From the Service Manual: Two customer-accessible/upgradable memory module slots DDR3 PC3-1600-MHz dual channel support Supports 16384-MB of system RAM in the following configurations: ? 16384-MB (8192-MB×2) ? 8192-MB (8192-MB×1 or 4096×2) The specified memory is 1.5 volt. DDR3L will run at either 1.35 or 1.5 volt but I generally avoid mixing voltages. That is why the DDR3L is working for you and I assume you have 2 of the same in the laptop with 8 gigs.  Can you figure out what is in the 4 gig machine now? I would not mix voltages or density...i.e would not have one module with 8 black blocks and one with 4. Try to match the existing 4 gig module is what I am saying...not the exact brand of memory but the characteristics of it.

HI, I have an EliteBook Folio 9470m running WIN 8.1 Ent 64-bit. I have an issue with the Touchpad not working. I have installed the latest driver (sp66111) from HP Support and as a result only the PointStick and associated buttons work and not the Touchpad. Has anyone experienced this and if so what is the fix please? Incidentally, the Touchpad was working at one stage on this OS and ceased to work afterwards. I have re-stalled the OS from scratch withpout success either. Thanks in advance, Vik

I have an HP 9470m Elitebook that will not start up on a docking station. When starting up, it freezes on the "Please Wait" screen before login. I have tried it on 3 different docking stations with the same results. The BIOS are up to date. There is a driver update for the dock available, but it requires it to be plugged into to the dock, and when I dock the computer after start-up and try to install, I get the error message: ?Please connect at least one monitor to the dock and then continue.?  Unfortunately, this computer is also now just about 2 weeks out of warranty.

Hi, I work in tech support for a company and one of our enterprise laptops mysteriously has lost its "tattooed" information.  The user who had this laptop left the company and when we went to wipe it we discovered this issue.  Upon starting the machine the HP splash screen has in red text on the top left of the screen "Manufactoring Program Mode set 1 of 10" after the splash screen a "Product Information not Valid" screen appears.  It reads: Product Information not validThe following product information programmed into the system board is missing or invalidSYSTEM BOARD (00A)Product Name Product Serial NumberProduct SKUProduct FamilySystem Board CT NumberENTER - Continue Startup For more information, please visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup I know that there is an HP utility tool to "tattoo" this information back onto the machine.  As an enterprise that uses 95% HP equipment (our monitors, mouse, keyboards are the only non-HP equipment) I think that the tech support deserves these types of tools to troubleshoot issues.  Sure the machine boots normally if you hit enter, but it's alarming/scandalous to be presented with that product information not valid screen when powering on a machine.  Bonus points to whoever can provide some reasoning as to how this occurred.

I am experiencing the following issue and hope that someone in the forum as an idea / suggestion. When I have the screen connected via via display port cable with the docking station and I have my laptop docked, I dont get any signal and the screen keeps black. This is independent of the Operating System - I used Windows 7, Windows 8. When my laptop is docked but I attach the display port cable directly to the laptop it works without any problem. I have also realized that with other displays 23'' or 24'' the setup with the docking station works without a problem. So it has to be a cominbination between UltraSlim Docking Station and ZR2740w screen. Any advise what else should be tried?

Update:  After calling HP technical support I and being bounced among various clueless offshore tech support reps, I finally landed on the US-based workstation support department.  Justin looked up the problem and identified it as a known issue and is replacing my monitor cable with one that HP says will work.   Also, in the meantime there is a workaround that I had figured out.  If you don't use the displayport port on the ultraslim docking station but pug the cable directly into the computer it works fine.  There is some inconvienence associated with this as you have to plug it in every time you dock and unplug it every time you undock (and of course the cable always falls behind the desk while you are doing this), but it is okay as a solution while I am waiting for the new cable to arrive.  Will update this post after it arrives and report whether it works.

Hello, After upgrading from Win7 to Win10, my system got stuck when uninstalling MS Office, and nothing worked anymore (File Explorer etc.). I tried to make a factory reset, which got stuck, too, and no OS would be detected anymore. Then I tried to reinstall Win10 64 bit, which brought be a bit of trouble. I have an HP Folio 9470 with a 320 HDD and a 32 GB (I believe) mSATA. During my Win10 reinstall, I ran into trouble and then deleted all partitions on both drives and reformatted everything because I thought that was the method for a clean reinstall. First, I installed Win10 on the 320 HDD, but my BIOS did not appear to allow this (although harddisk was in the legacy boot options), which the Win10 installer had already warned me about, so I could not boot from my HDD and thus could not start Win10. Next, I reformatted everything and installed Win10 on my mSATA. However, the Win10 installer and later Windows 10 only showed a size of 11GB for the mSATA. The installation itself already took up 11GB and there was no space left for necessary drivers and updates, and Windows 10 malfunctioned. My feeling is that the mSATA was larger than just 11GB, but that a part of it is not shown any more after deleting partitions and reformatting. After multiple reinstalls, I do not know what to do any more. Any idea what how I might get a functioning version of Windows 10 on my HP Folio 9470m? Best regardsFrank

So i'm using a Folio 9470m at work on a 2013 Ultraslim Docking station with 2 Display Port connectors, but if i attach two screens to those it only displays them as one device and mirrors the image on both screens. Furthermore if i go into the screen and resolution settings, both identify as screen 1, but i can set 3840x1080 instead of 1920x1080 and at that moment the picture will span over both screens as one. The downside to this is that the login screen, windows i open for the first time, they're all gonne appear in the middle where the bezels are, it handles them as one bigger screen and not as 2 screens that extend each other. I need them to be detected as 2 seperate screens, and so far i have had no success. Has anyone experienced this or knows a solution? I really don't want to connect the second screen via VGA. Can the folio handle 2 display port connections on a dock? Is this maybe the cause?

When my laptop is plugged into an external monitor, the laptop screen is the "primary" display, where programs automatically open, etc. Is there a way to make the primary display not the laptop screen but the external monitor screen? Here's the catch--is there a way to do it *without looking at the primary monitor*?

I have this strange request because my laptop's screen recently died. I have connected an external monitor, and so can still use the computer--more or less. The problem is that I can't see my start menu, etc--they are all on the laptop screen, ie, the dead one.

I know, normally, how to switch the display: I would right click on the desktop and select "personalize," then "display" But when I do this, it opens the display in the primary monitor (the broken laptop monitor) and I can't see it to change the settings. It's a sad catch 22.

If anyone could help me with this is would REALLY appreciate it. Thank you.

I have a Dell Latitude D610 laptop running XP Pro SP3.

In the past, I could plug an LCD monitor into the laptop's video port and either replicate or extend the desktop using the blue Fn and CRT/LCD keys.

Now I can't get an external monitor to work. I've tried two LCD monitors that work on other PC's, so I think the problem is in the D610.

The external monitor function stopped working when I was attempting to get an LCD monitor to work that had a different native resolution that the laptop was set to. I don't know if that was coincidence or I messed up some software settings or there was a hardware failure in the laptop . . . or something else.

Any advice or thoughts as to what I might do to get the external monitor going again? Or verify a hardware failure?

Thanks.

Have no trouble attaching old computer to new monitor as the Hitachi has an external VGA port, but both monitors are then on.

The Bios has only two display choices:
1. Auto - This makes both monitors work
2. Inboard - This makes only the small monitor work even though external is attached.

I want to turn off small monitor permanently and use only the large one. Is there any way to do this without opening the case and detaching the monitor (if this is even possible)?

Thanks

I am having issues with my laptop after installing window 8.1 pro my external monitor refuse to display can some one assist me on this pls

A:external monitor

Check device manager under display adapters. What is showing? The issue you describe is often caused by having a generic video driver instead of the correct video driver.

I hooked up my laptop with s-video to my HDTV but the screen is choppy and gray, I know it works because I have done this on my old tv. Also when I wiggle the S-video wire the screen flickers and shows full color then goes back to grey. I know it's not the wire because I have hooked other components with it. what is the problem?

A:external monitor

If you've tried another cable, it's obviously one of the connections, since it appears to be a physical connection issue.

So, I have a laptop and a Lenovo Ideacentre, which is a standalone desktop.

The laptop screen is very small. However, the laptop's specs are waaay better than the Ideacentre.

How can I use the Ideacentre's monitor as a display for my laptop?

Should I buy a HDMI-to-HDMI cable?

A:Using a second PC as an external monitor?

If the monitor on the ideacentre has an input then you should be able to do that. You could use a VGA, DVI, or HDMI connector depending on what is available. If it does not have additional ports for input then you won't be able to do this.

The HDMI receptacle on the PC portion is for output.

I have 2 PCs connected to one monitor here. I can switch between them with an input button on the monitor. That would also be very important to have. Standard PC monitors have these. I'm not sure about All-In-Ones.

I have added an external monitor to my H?P laptop (Pavillion zd8000). When I play a DVD the laptop monitor shows information on the right side of the screen and my mouse pointer is also visible. The external monitor's screen is entirely taken up by the picture (lovely but) my mouse pointer is not visible and neither are the DVD controls on the right side of the monitors screen.

I have a desktop hooked up with my 32inch lcd hdtv and it works fine. But just recently I bought a notebook and I want to use it as my everyday computer and get rid of my desktop. I hooked up my notebook to the tv and the screen is flickering like something to do with the refresh rate. I looked through some of the settings and tried different things within them and nothing helped. Does anybody know how I can fix this? My computer info for both are in my sig.

My external monitor works but it just recently started doing something weird. It might be the VGA Cable but I'm not sure. It's visible enough that if you compared my laptop screen towards my external screen you would see this like tiny tiny tiny tiny (emphasizing tiny) like white flickers. Some what moving up and down the screen. It's like almost if your VGA cable was just slightly not all the way in. I've wiggled the cabled replugged both ends. Turned my laptop off, the screen off. Reset the screen settings. Everything and I still see it. Is my VGA Cable going bad or my monitor?

A:External monitor maybe going bad?

If you really want to be sure either take the monitor to a repair shop and try with a cable there or get another cable, I would try the former though.

I am capable of connecting an external monitor to my notebook via VGA, however, the output is only the same as my notebook screen. The question I have is if I am able to have, for instance, 2 explorer windows open, one one my notebook monitor and another on the external, both having different information displayed. In other words, i want to be able to, for instance, surf the net with having one site on one monitor and another site on the other. I know i would have to have a video car capable of doing this and since my video car enables me to mirror the viewing on my notebook on the external would i need some type of software or would i just configure my computer differently.

I hope this makes sense and someone understands what i am asking. All input is appreciated. Thank you.

Your looking to have a dual screen capable setup, generally this is reserved for desktop computers. You would have to have either a laptop with a laptop pci/agp graphics port that also had the capability of dual screens OR you would need to find a pcmcia vga card that is specifically for dual screen output. I don't believe any such thing exists for a laptop but there is this

thing

and also if you can find the place that makes

that they might have something capable of dual screen

Good Luck

So basically i've been pulling my hair out over the past few days over a problem. My main monitor is broke (black running down 1/3 of the screen) but still useable. Anyway i have another monitor that i can use however it only has one slot for input. We'll call it input A.

The screen that is broke has input A and input B but the COMPUTER that i'm using only has output B.

I have no wires that are A to be, only B to B (what i'm using with my current monitor) and A to A so this is what i've tried:

Connecting one monitor literally to another but to no avail. It does say "in power save mode, please press any button on the keyboard" etc on the secondary monitor which is promising because at least it's connected however not recognized when i go to desktop: properties etc.

I know it's probably a lost cause but any help would be appreciated. Sorry if i made my post confusing, its hard to explain.

My computer will not switch to my external (DELL) monitor when I turn on my laptop. The screen comes on briefly and then switches to the laptop screen.
I cannot switch with Fn-F5.

I have an Acer Aspire 3620 Laptop.Do I need to reinstall the display driver?

It stays on when I run diagnostics. (Test screens)

First off.
I'm not a expert/moderator/tech!

Have you tried opposite clicking in a open area of your desktop, clicking the properties button, then clicking the settings tab and tried changing your monitor configuration.

Also if this is not the fix (highly likely), try using your internet's search engine to search for how to connecting a external monitor to a laptop.
Hope to have helped

Hello,

I'm trying to get my external monitor set as my primary from my laptop. I have gone into the 'Display' and tried different settings. I've tried the FN F4 button... a message will say "Switching to external monitor" but nothing happens.

This monitor has worked before. It is an ACER. Please Help.

* Also, in the 'Display/Settings' when I click #2 as my primary and then click 'Apply' or 'OK' it always disables the #2 monitor.

Trying to use my laptop with an external HP monitor; I have them connected; using FN & F4 keys I can toggle between displays (monitors) or both.  However, when only external monitor is on (which I want), & I close the laptop lid (as the HP monitor is designed to slide the laptop under it), the laptop shuts off & the external monitor goes dark. How do I keep the laptop on when the lid/screen is closed?  (HP Tech Support wants $49 to tell me.) Thanks.

A:External Monitor with laptop

Hi, Right click the Battery icon in the Taskbar and select Power Options. In the following window, select 'Choose what closing the lid does' in the left hand pane. In the subsequent window, next to the heading 'When I close the lid' set this to 'Do nothing' in the dropdown menu for both 'On battery' and 'Plugged in'. Click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the window to apply this change. Regards, DP-K

Hello,

I have an hp ze4315us notebook. I wanted to play a movie but use my new lcd 19" widescreen monitor. I plugged it into the notebook video outlet but all I get on the monitor is the win xp background with no icons or anything. I have tried playing around with the video properties but have been unsuccessful. I see there is an option were I can make the second monitor as the primary but that opion is faded and will not let me check the box. I am running win xp pro. Any suggestions??? Thanks Philip
Also how can I have my laptop in the closed postion and still have the movie play. I have tried going into the power options but I didn't find anything that helped.

A:Unable To Use External Monitor

Hi Again,

I am half way to a solution thanks to my 10 yr old son. The additional monitor is the "right half" of the laptop monitor. i.e. if you move the cursor to the right enough it will dissappear from the laptop and appear on the lcd monitor. I can even drag the movie from the laptop were it is playing fine but when it appears on the lcd monitor the frame of the player is there but there is no movie image. Anyone out there know what settings I should play with to get the image on the lcd monitor?
