Okay I live in the dorms in college.(well actually they are not the dorms but overflow apartments because the dorms were full, not sure if it matters but thought i should add) I brought my wireless netgear router with me to school to plug my Ps3 into and to download certain things the school blocks on the regular wireless internet.

So I plug my router into the jack in the room and then run wireless to my laptop and wired to my Ps3. I set up the router and it determined the internet connection is DHCP . I set the router to obtain I.P. and DNS addresses dynamically and it won't work. then i set it to use static addresses. ( the address that it picked up dynamically ) It then works for awhile, sometimes a few hours and sometimes less than an hour. To get it to work again all I have to do is set it back to dynamic wait a couple minutes and move it back to static. When I lose connection my playstation says its a DNS error.

my roommate plugs his laptop directly into the jack on the wall because he doesn't have a wireless card and he hasn't said anything about losing his connection. But once i plugged him into the router he loses his connection just like me.

I am sure i am forgetting something important if anymore info is needed I will add. Please help it is really getting annoying changing the setting on the router

Ok, I'm completely stumped here. I've got an older DSL modem (AT-RG634) that is connected to a windows XP box via ethernet. I'm trying to setup a wireless router (dlink wbr-1310) on the connection. The internet connection on the xp box works fine. However, if I plug the router into the modem directly, I am unable to get an internet connection. The router shows that a connection has been established to the modem, but it doesn't have any internet connectivity. I thought perhaps it was related to the MAC address, but I'm successfully able to connect 2 different mac laptops to the modem and have internet without issue. In summary:

Modem->XP via LAN = works
Modem->Macbook via LAN = works
Modem->iBook via LAN = works

Modem->Router->XP (all via LAN) = does not work
Modem->Router->Macbook (via wireless) = does not work
Modem->Router->iBook (via wireless) = does not work

On the wireless connections, I'm able to connect to the router via wireless without issue...I just can't access the internet. I've reset the router to factory conditions and messed with the config, but it strikes me as odd that both of the laptops were able to immediately connect without issue, yet the router is completely unable to connect to the internet. Is it possible that the router just doesn't work anymore? I haven't ever had any issues with it before now...

Please let me know if you have any ideas! Thanks!

Hi,
Since Thursday morninG (Feb 3, 2011) I have not been able to connect to the internet with my laptop wirelessly. I have tries to configure my IP address through the command prompt, and oher suggestions I have found on the internet. I have a computer that is wired to the router, two laptops with a wireless connection, and two playstation 3's with internet access. I have never encounted a failed connection liek this before. Right not I have decided to back up my system and dump my system and restart all over. When looking at networks I an connect to, it says that I am connected to my router. However, my computer internet management says that my WLAN is disconnected, but my wi-fi router us in range and connected. In my network and sharing option in the control panel, when I try to diagnose my failed connection between router and internet, it changes the reasons. Right now the reason is that "Primary DNS Server is currently online but is not repsonding to connection attempts at this time." Then it explains smething about a firewall blocking "domains."

I really need to get this issue fixed ASAP. I have been using this router for close to 3 years without a problem like this. I used it perfectly fine the night before I realized I had a problem.

Thank youuuuu,
Angela

A couple days ago i noticed that my wireless internet had been running slower than usual, so i thought i would try resetting the the router, which is a D-link DIR-655. After the reset, I am no longer able to connect to the internet through wireless. I have 1 desktop PC wired to the wireless router which can access the internet but my other desktop and two other laptops which rely on the router for internet can no longer connect to the internet. They can still detect and connect to the wireless network but they just cant get onto the internet.
Also, after the reset, the desktop pc that is wired to the router has a strange connection now, which is a PPPoE connection. When connecting with this connection, it brings me to a username/password screen which i had never seen before previous to the router reset. I have verizon DSL and usually it would connect automatically but now i have to connect manually through this new connection. I think the problem lies in the router but i cant figure out a way to solve this problem. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Did you power cycle the modem when switching from computer to router?

Brand and model of modem and router?

For one of the PCs connected first to the router and then to the modem ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I recently switched over to Comcast for internet and have an xfinity router. The wifi works perfectly on all computers and devices except one. It's not working on a large desktop that uses a TP-Link wireless card. When I try to connect to the internet from Firefox on this computer, it just says "Connecting..." on the top of the tab for a while and eventually goes to a "Server not found" page.

Every now and then, usually after I try something random to fix it (such as turning on "SoftAP mode" on the TP-Link card) the internet will work for a few seconds, but then it stops again.

(Sorry if I didn't put enough information in here; tell me if you need to know anything else.)

I was able to wirelessly connect 2 laptops and my PS3 momentarily yesterday by adding the password to the SSID ( first day of service) but have not been able to connect since. I added the network to my PS3 yesterday and was able to save, however, anytime i try and get online i get an error message: "The key information exchange timed out. The WPA key you entered may not be correct.

A wired Ethernet connection between the computer and the modem (CMX300v2) works and you can access the Internet.

A wired Ethernet connection between the computer and the Belkin Wireless G Router works and you can access the Internet.

The Belkin Wireless G Router broadcast and shows a good signal strength but when prompted for the password, the connection times out.

Could this be an IP issue? Setting each machine with its own IP address help? I can login to my router admin page http://192.168.2.1 to make adjustments. I am just not sure what the issue is here.

I have gone through may google setup suggestions and I can get my blackberry phone and my HP tower to see and connect to the wireless, but it will not go out to the internet. The HP tower says Local Only. The computer that I am using to setup the wireless with is hardwired and will stay that way.

ok so I have a Sony Vaio laptop that runs Vista and just recently got a linksys wireless router, model WRT54G. So I connected that router to my at&t modem (Motorola DSL Modem Model 2210). I've never had this happen before. This morning I opened Firefox (version 3.6.20), which I typically use to access the web, and got the "unable to connect" message. I checked my router settings and everything seems fine. I did notice in the router settings the IPv6 connectivity is listed as limited. I'm not sure if this has changed or has always been this way. I unplugged my router and cable modem, restarted both computers and tried to access the internet via Firefox again...without success. I opened IE (version 9) and am able to access the internet just fine. Anyone know why one browser works fine but another cannot access the web?

This computer is a Sony Vaio running Windows Vista home premium connected via a Belkin wireless router to a cable modem.

Lightening fried my Linksys, so I got an Ativa router because it was fairly cheap and had decent reviews where I bought it from.

Hooked it up to my cable modem, and the local network will show, but I can't get internet access on my desktop (wired) or my laptop (wired or wireless), When I hook the ethernet directly from my modem to my desktop or my laptop it works, but when I put the router on it, the internet will work for 1-2 minutes and then drops connection.

The desktop is running XP SP2, laptop is running Vista Home Premium.

This has probably been asked but I couldn't find anything directly relating to my problem. Last week, I lost my internet, called my ISP, and it was a problem with the modem. They replaced the modem and since then my wireless router has not worked. I assume I had a power surge that blew both the modem and the router. I "borrowed" my mother's router, same brand, but better model, which the laptop has been connected to before. I am still getting connected but it's saying that there is no internet access. The lights on the router are either a solid orange or blinking orange. I have already tried the resets, changed the IPv4, moved the router around, ect. I have full wired internet but I am running into and tripping over the cords running all over the house(running to laptop, PS3, iPhone and iPod). There is no support for the routers(both are Belkin), unless I pay $40 for a 15 min phone call. My aunt does IT and figures it's something in the house stopping the wireless signal from being picked up but she's not 100%. Like I said, both routers have been used for all my devices before. Is there any settings that I could look into? Factory reset did nothing either..
Any help or advice would be great!

A:Wireless router is connected, no internet access, power surge?

Don't expect a useful replly when you so seriously short your help of valuable facts. For example, the router has many lights. Exactly which one is orange. And then quote the router manual where it says what orange for that one router means.

You post is even vague about what connects to what. Does it work wired but not wireless? Do computers talk to each other but not connect to the internet? Do wired computers connect to the internet? You did not even list he model number so that others can discover needed facts that you withheld.

Every light even has a specific name, a specific function, and maybe various colors. Orange means different things for different electronics. What does the manual say a flashing orange light means? And what do the other colors for that light report?

Ever since i've gotten my lynksis wireless router, it had always worked, but the connection was never very stable. It would drop the connection every now and then, and then i'd have to reset the modem... which was no biggy. But a week ago my internet dropped, and ever since then it's given me the message "You are connected to the access point, but the internet could not be found" The other night, i actually got it to connect, i'm not sure how.. but i was connected for a good 45 mins, and then it dropped and went back to the same old message.. I bought a Cisco Valet M10 wireless router a few days ago and I have been having issues where my laptop says that it is connected to network and it shows maximum strength signal, but underneath the network name it says "No internet access". I have already contacted Cisco several times and also HP, as well as my ISP. I was told by someone from Cisco that Atheros (which is what my laptop has) has some problems with connections to wireless routers and I was told to manually update. I already tried and it says that my driver is already up to date. The internet connection on my desktop is fine so I don't think the issue is with my ISP. I have an ipod which is not having any connection issues, thus making me think the problem might be with my labtop and not the router. I connected the ethernet cable directly to my laptop and the internet works fine that way on my laptop.

I live in a 2 story house and my desktop is upstairs and I noticed that when I took my laptop downstairs, that it would loose internet access almost every time, but a while ago my laptop lost connection and I had it in my room which is right next to where the desktop is so now I don't think the problem has to do with the range. Sometimes it works when I am downstairs, but mostly it does not.

So how can i fix this problem? This is very frustrating and I feel like just returning the router.

P.s. the OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

A:Laptop losses internet access, but says "connected" to wireless router

Try your laptop with your friends router. This proves if the problem is related to your laptop.

When problems occur ("no internet access"), can you still access the router configuration?

Hi all,

Hoping someone can help me. I'm not the world's greatest computer girl but I know enough to be good at following directions

I have Comcast internet including a modem and router, both installed by the company around 6 months ago (details below). A few times recently, I will suddenly lose connectivity. My laptop wireless connection shows that I am connected but "No Internet Connection." Laptop browsers, as well as my consoles (so I know it's not just the PC) all show DNS errors.

RCA modem
Model DCM425
MAC 001E69165148

Netgear wireless router
MAC A021B796DCE0
Of course it seems to happen on Friday afternoons when I get home from work, requiring a service visit on Sunday at the earliest, and resulting in potential service charges and (WORST) a whole weekend with no internet.

I've spoken to multiple Comcast reps and all they do is push a new signal to the box. When that doesn't work, it seems they just want to get me off the phone asap, and schedule a service call. Last time, the guy came to my house, and ended up solving it by unplugging everything. He said to try this and "pray." Well I've tried to no avail. I'm piggybacking on someone else's connection now and hoping they don't kick me off before my conference calls (and gaming <_<) this weekend.

I'll be eternally grateful if someone can help me. Let me know any info I can provide.

Thanks!!

OK this is complicated so bear with me!

First time poster as well so please be gentle!

I have Telewest Cable Broadband working with a Linksys wireless G (wrt54g) router. It works a treat and i have the "improved" antennae from Linksys to boost the signal a bit as well.

I recently signed up with Vonage for a VoIP provider and the router they provide is wired (the Linksys rt41p2 router) and im trying to get this connected to my wireless network with a seperate Gateway or wireless hub. Im pretty sure this will work if i put the access point in infrasturcture mode (im thinking the linksys WAP54G access point) and conenct the VoIP router to the Access point (with DHCP disabled so its technically a switch) and then it can pick up the signal from the router over a wireless network.

The router seems to support this as it has a VoIP over wireless option in the setup of the latest BIOS flash.

What i need to know is if anyone here has a setup like this and any problems they have with this type of setup! Any help wopuld be much appreciated.

I have been having issues with my the Linksys Wireless card I installed in my Desktop computer for some time now. For some reason the connection just drops, but it still says I am connected. I leave a dos window open to watch as it happens by pinging the router. All of the sudden it will say "request timed out", but the icon shows that it's still connected to the wireless network.

I have tried just about everything to overcome this but nothing seems to work. Rebooting the router will allow it to work for a few minutes and then it times out again. Sometimes it will continue timing out, sometimes it will reconnect and sometimes it will says limited or no connection. Sometimes hitting repair will do the same thing...make it work for a few moments and they down again.

I have 4 other devices that connect to that router wirelessly and they have no issues at all, so I'm not prepared to blame the router. I noticed that my desktop's event view shows this entry frequently:

“The system detected that network adapter” Linksys...PCI Adapter – “Packet Scheduler Miniport was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter”.

Would seeing this event frequently not indicate that the card was dropping often and coming back up?

the Cable connected to the modem, modem conencts to the Wireless router, and that connects to my computer. Since i hardly ever use the wireless router, i decided i want to just connect to the modem. I switched all the ethernet cords and by looking at what i had done, everything should have been working fine.

But that is wrong... I couldnt connect to the internet. I while back i set up a static IP address, but i changed that. the settings look like this now:
(to post this i had to go back to the router and the modem)

when i was trying to use just the modem, windows window bubble came up and said i have little or no activity, and i tried repairing it. windows tried to renew my IP address but that failed so there was nothing else i could think of doing.

what can i do so i can just connect throught the modem?!

Hi,

I'm sure this question has been asked multiple times because I myself have read countless posts trying to figure out my problem and solve it, but nothing has seemed to work for me. I have an HP G60-230US laptop and a Linksys router. It says my laptop is connected to linksys but it has a limited connection. It will not connect to the Internet and I can't open the Internet at all. I got an error saying that it was unable to communicate with the Primary DNS Server but I'm pretty clueless as to how to go about fixing this.

Thanks in advance!

I have a D-Link Wireless Router in my basement office that's connected to my cable modem. I also have a D-Link 8-port gigabit switch connected to the wireless router. Over the last few years I have wired many rooms in my house that all connect into the gigaswitch. Everything works fine. I am also using WEP encryption on the wireless router.

I now have the need to extend the wireless capability to an upstairs room, but cannot seem to get a reliable signal that will stay connected. I decided to try and plug an older D-Link Wireless Access point device (DWL-1000AP) into the wired RJ-45 ethernet jack in the room. I went through the 'successful' install of the 1000AP and my wireless devices seem to recognizes it as an access point -along with the wireless router in my basement office. I used WEP encryption again on the 1000AP device - same key.

However, whenever I try to connect to that 1000AP I cannot get connected. It simply will not connect to the 1000AP device which is sitting just a few feet from my wireless device/computer.

Why won't it connect? One possible theory I've thought of is that I have one wireless point (the 1000AP) connected into another wireless point - both using the same WEP encryption and security key value. Is this the probable issue? Is what I'm trying to do, well doable? Or, am I way off base here? Is there another way to do this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
redjr....

BTW, I'm using WinXP Pro SP2.

A:Wireless Access Point Connected to Wireless Router??

You should be able to connect. If you configure the access point with no security, does it connect then? That's the way to narrow this down.

Remember, you need to use the hex keys for WEP, not the passcode, since that's not always 100% reliable.

Hi,

I am just getting the nerve to start my home network. I have a laptop and desktop both physically connected to a wireless router. I have 2 desktops downstairs that have wireless antennas/recievers. All computers are XP Home.

I want to network, and I have bought a "network for dummies" book. It does not tell me how to go about making sure I configure everything right.

Do I "add a network place," "set up a home or small office network," or "set up a wireless network" first?

Anyhelp to get started would be appreciated. Also, can I make it secure so no-one can just add themselves to my network?

Thank you so much.

You are better off forgetting all the wizards and following a home networking guide that does not use them.

You can find them from Google or these very forums.

Hi there:
I have a weird problem here.
I have two laptops. Laptop A is my personal one using at home. Laptop B is my company laptop...The problem is about my laptop B
When I use my laptop B at work, everything works perfectly... When I get
home, this laptop could connect to Skype but just can not browse website...
I used ping and found that it can only ping IP address instead of websites...
I first thought that maybe the DNS server was screwed . Then I used my
laptop A to test, Laptop A and Laptop B have the identical settings, both
use Automatic DHCP server, settings on the TCP/IP are identical...
Laptop A works fine, can ping website and browse websits with a chime....
I then followed the Instructions and posted the following info and hope someone
here could give me some hints...BTW, I have the genuine windows xp pro cd.

thanks

I thought i was reasonably PC savvy but after reading some of these posts I realise that I have no idea! - please be gentle...

I am living in a boarding hostel which has a wireless network (via Mac Airports) which I have connected to - it says that the signal strength is good (though it does appear to fluctuate)

This wireless connection uses a proxy server to connect to the internet (so that they have some control over what the students can see).

My problem is that I can connect to the network, but not always to the internet (using firefox). the internet seems to cut in and out, and if it is connected, it runs VERY slowly, and most often times out (even when opening something simple like google.com)

What I need to know is:
1. how can I tell if this is a PC issue or network issue?
2. I ran the intel PROset diagnostics tool and it says that the ping test failed (no response: default gateway, DHCP server)
Some things that I've tried:
1. other computers seem to work fine on the network
2. disabled windows firewall
3. talked to the techs but since they're mac users they weren't familiar with vista and therefire not too much help.

Ideas on what to do please??

A:Solved: Vista connected to wireless network but internet not connected

I have Linksys wireless router, and I've been using that for awhile, no problems with it.

I had a 50 foot CAT5 cable sitting around and as well, an old D-Link DI-604 wired router, so I decided to turn the router, into a switch so can I hardwire my Desktop and PS3.

I have the Port 2 Linksys router outputting the internet to the WAN D-Link wired router using the 50 foot cable, and then using Port 1 and 2 to my Desktop and PS3, respectively.

Everything on the Desktop and PS3 side seems to be great, i've noticed web pages loading times decrease.

Except that the computer which is hardwired to my Linksys wireless router, is awfully snail slow.

Is it because the D-Link router is a Router and not a switch, that this problem is happening?

Edit - I've been reading that this is more complicated then a simple plug and go. I have to disable the DHCP and everything, everytime I try to log into my D-Link router, it'll get into the routers main page, but nothing will load after I try to click 'LAN' or 'WAN' or 'DHCP'

Edit 2 - Alright, so I have changed my 2nd router to disable the DHCP and changed the IP to be different from my 1st router, and everything seems good except for one thing. When I plug in my PS3 to either Port 3 or Port 4, the whole network is crippled, and nothing connects. Very interesting. I'm going to replace the CAT6 cable from my PS3 to my router-switch with a crossover cable, i've got a feeling it's ... Read more

Hi All

I have a Netgear Router at home, and both my Laptop and Tablet connect to it via WiFi. Now on both the Laptop and Tablet, Internet has recently become VERY slow. I contacted my ISP and they said everything on their side is fine, so it has to be on my side...

What can cause this? I've checked for Malware but the fact that both the tablet and Laptop has slow internet points to the router. I also flushed my DNS on my laptop and booted into safemode with networking, internet still ridiculously slow...

Note, both the laptop and tablet travel with me and did connect to other networks sometimes

Any Suggestions?

Thank You

On the laptop what download reading do you get with Speedtest.net with an ethernet connection and with a wireless connection?

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

We can all connect to the internet, but none of us can stay connected. We all get "bumped off" at the same time. I connected 1 of the laptops to the router with an ethernet cable, and that one keeps the connection when the others lose it, so I've solved the problem for one, but this is not a feasible solution for the others. I've tried moving the modem and router around, but that hasn't helped either.

A:USB LAN Card is not Connected with Wireless Router

Hi:You have not told us anything about your network environment,so a little difficult to give you answers. But,here are some very broad ground rules for basic network building.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
• COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
• Computer Browser
• DHCP Client
• DNS Client
• Network Connections
• Network Location Awareness
• Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
• Server
• TCP/IP Netbios helper
• Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations)
• WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations)
• Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.

You say you see your network. Can you browse to other computers on the network when connected wirelessly?

With the wireless connection, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Hey all

So I am having this weird problem. I have Time Warner as my ISP, and previously had a Belkin router for wireless. All was well until Time Warner had a snafu in the system, and was down for about 12 hours. Ever since then, I cannot connect to the internet through the router. I have to unhook the router completely and plug directly into the cable modem or no internet for me.

I took back the Belkin and bought a Dynex, and get the same problem. It looks like it might be made by the same company as well, due to the same design in the serup options.

I called tech support, and the guy had me do all these tests, such as power cycling, manually assigning an IP address, reseting the router, using a different ethernet cable, erc.

None worked, so he finally said I cannot help you, your router is bad. Why did it work before? How can two different routers be bad?

When the router is plugged in, all the lights are on except the internet light is blinking. This is the same thing that happened with the previous router as well.

Any help would be appreciated before I take this back and try a Netgear or Linksys model.

A:Can get connected via cable modem but not wireless router

First off, let's see this when you're plugged directly into the modem.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

Next, try this procedure for getting a wired connection to the router, we'll work on wireless after this works.

Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, you should have Internet access. If not, I want to see this again.

Ok, here is an event that happened today. Unfortunately I did not thuroughly test everything after this occured but I plan to look into it further.

Here is a little background: I currently have 3 PCs all running win7. I have my main PC that is wired to the network running x86 7057. I have a laptop that was running 7000 and obviously connected wirelessly. I also have an HTPC running x64 7068 that connects wirelessly as well. All of them are part of the same homegroup.

Now, today I was watching a movie with the htpc that was being shared from the laptop. It was only maybe a third of the way through when I had to disconnect my router because I was installing a new one. After I powered off the router and disconneted everything I fully expected the buffer on the movie to run out shortly and it to cut out. However, it did not. In fact it kept playing for well over an hour until the movie was finished. Once the movie stopped, MCE did come back up saying it could not find any shared libraries.

So, my question is, did the HTPC really buffer the whole movie in the short amount of time that I had watched the first part of the movie? Otherwise it would seem that the HTPC and laptop had connected to each other wirelessly to continue playback once the router was removed.

I tried to find more information about this but it was kind of a vague search topic. Maybe I missed this in an article about win7 or homegroups.

Anyway, I just thought it was an odd event and figu... Read more

A:Wireless PCs can stay connected when router is removed?

It buffered the entire movie. You don't mention what file type or quality, but a typical .avi is only a cd size (~700 MB+), or two. A whole DVD is anywhere from 4 to 9 GB. I am guessing you don't mean BluRay.

Any typical home network could send any of that within watching a 1/3 of a movie, which is approximately a half hour.

This is my guess.

And no, one wireless connected pc will not connect to another wireless connected pc when the router they are connected to is removed, on their own.

Hi I recently purchased the Wireless N D-Link Router DIR-615. After a few hiccups the router works with all of our computers, blackberry's, wireless printer and Ipod touch's however my Apple TV 1G will not connect to the network.

The Apple TV will just give the error code -6 after the password for the network has been entered.

I double checked that the password for the router is only WEP 10 hex digits and that it is correct
Unplugged the Apple TV and replugged it in.

I have tried reseting the Apple TV to the factory settings and using the DHCP Reservation in the network settings of the router and manually configuring the TC/IP settings on the Apple TV (Not quite sure what I am doing with this though so put everything back). I have also tried switching the 802.11 settings on the router to all of the available options and nothing is working.

The Apple TV worked just fine on our old router which was a Linksys compact wireless-g broadband router WRT54GC

I would really appreciate any help on this, Thanks

When the PC is connected, the speed of the wireless connection drops significantly.
From my phone speedtest shows ping 13ms, 27.75 down and 24.18 up when the PC is not connected. When the PC is connected, speedtest shows ping 20ms, 0.2 down, and 0.1 up (if the connection doesn't time out.)

It seems the ethernet connection is taking nearly all the bandwidth and the wireless devices just won't work. How can I give equal bandwidth to the wired and wireless connections?

I know this may sound basic to some but I'm a bit perplexed. I've connected my computer to a wireless router. Everything works fine and I can log on to the Internet, no prob. But now, I'd like to connect my girlfriend's computer to the wireless router so she can log on to the internet. Her computer is not set up for true "wireless" so I connected her computer with a phone line into the wireless router. Her computer does have an ethernet card, I believe. But why is it she can't log on?? Why won't the phone line which is inserted into the wireless router allow her to log on to the Internet?

Appreciate what I'm sure is a simple explanation to this problem.

Thank you all!!

A:Router works when connected via wire but not wireless?

bgs-arch,

Go to the following Linksys site and run their NetSet Assistant, it will check the system and set up the router. Run NETSET program hard wired and do not insert PCMCIA card until it tells you to. After setup is done run the NETCHECK on the same page to check out the wireless operation (initially you cannot run this one until after NetSet Assit. is complete). Can't remember which, but one of them will also set up WEP for your wireless security. I just used these a few days ago setting up a new BEFW11S4 ver. 4 to replace a failed ver. 2 and it was so quick and easy, it scared me! It also updated the firmware on my older Linksys PCMCIA wireless card. Your model router is supported by these programs and only XP OS. Good luck and hope it works as good for you as it did for me.

Installing all Windows UpgradesDisabling Windows FirewallDisabling Avast FirewallsDisabling User Access ControlSetting static IP (above .100)Disabling IPv6 communicationChanging WPA security settingsClearing the ARP/DNS tables

So... I've run out of ideas. Full system virus scann is going on right now. Have anyone had similiar problem? Can you tell me what else can I try?
Unfortunatelly I have no physical access to the router and it's settings, so I can't change anything on this side.

Any help or idea will be appriciated

A:Vista connected to the wireless network, can't even ping router

Can you follow this tutorial so that I can see your IP configuration which may help me in determining the cause of your problem - Network Posting Tips

Also, when you complete a ping request do you ping the IP address or the hostname? If the hostname then please try to ping the IP address as this may be an issue with your DNS servers.

Lastly, what is your router make/model as some routers disable ICMP echoes (ping) therefore it may be a setting on the router that needs changing.

Many thanks,
Josh!

I have a new N600 Netgear DSL modem/router. I was able to install the internet connection but no the Wireless. It keeps asking me for a PIN number . They say it is on the device itself.

A:Solved: Cannot get new Netgear DSL Modem/Router connected to Wireless

yes, the pin number should be written on the label on the router

otherwise connect to the router by a cable and then you would need to loginto the router configuration pages and goto the wireless section where you can read the pin code

do you have the exact model N600 is generic for a few netgear models- again it will be written on the label on the router itself

Hi,
I have two routers, the first one is not wireless and the second is wireless (Model No. TL-WR740N).
To the first one is connected the TV and the second router. To the the second router (the wireless one) is connected a PC (windows xp) through a UTP cable and 2 laptops (windows 7) via wi-fi. Internet works for all the computers and all of them are pingable. The problem is in file sharing. The first laptop can't access files from PC but it can access files from the second laptop. The second laptop can access files from PC but it can't from the first laptop (the icon of the first laptop is shown in "Network" but it gives an error when trying to access it). The first laptop can access the files from PC only if it's connected to the wireless router through UTP cable, otherwise it won't work.

Please help. I know that the problem is in the first laptop but i don't know where exactly. (i need to access wirelessly the PC files using the first laptop)

Thank you

Hi all...............

I used to think I was good with PCs.......but I'm struggling with this one!!

My ISP is NTL (Virgin). I was connected via the USB and all was well. I recently purchased the router above. This router uses the ethernet cables, which I believe I've put in correctly, but if I leave in the USB it uses that route & if I remove it.........I get nothing!! I'm having no joy. I want to keep a wired connection for the PC and have the wireless for the games machines etc.

Can anyone help??

Sorry..a little more information. when I tried to re-install the modem using the ethernet cable option, an error came up saying..'put the USB cable in and try again!'

I just got FiOS last weekend (TV, internet and phone), and ever since then I have had problems staying connected using my wireless laptop. It will connect for 10 mins or so, then would drop off. My laptop would take a few minutes before it could re-acquire a signal again. I used to have Verizon broadband DSL before and had no problems. This is very frustrating. Is this a known problem with Verizon? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Problems staying connected to FiOS wireless router

Do you live in an area where there are a few wireless routers in the area? Access the routers admin setup and change the channel to 9 or 10. Could be interference with other routers, cordless phones, microwaves. Also, is the wireless router in the same spot as the old one? The wireless router could be too far from the computer. Also make sure the laptop is actually using YOUR signal and not your neighbors.

ok so lets start this off i have a lenovo IdeaPad Z570...ive had it for 6 months now everything was good until a certain girl touched it and started using it and now its messed up...

anyway my router is a TRENDnet TEW-432BRP.

THE PROBLEM: ok when ever i try to connect to my wireless it will connect to the internet for about 5 minutes(if i dont do anything) then it will disconnect and when you look at the wireless list of possible connections it does not even show my wireless anymore. for me to make my wireless appear again i have to go into wireless profiles and delete the profile and it will show up again. If it is connected and i try to do anything, open a chrome, start wow, anything that requires internet will instantly disconnect.

i like to think i am pretty good with computers but this is one problem ive tried to fix for week and im tired and run out of ideas...

Hi all,

I'm trying to get a wireless router working for friends. I got it to work yesterday, but now it is no longer working.

My setup:
Fiber optic connection, HAG
Conitech wireless router access point (can find very little info on this)
PC XP pro sp3

If I connect my computer to the HAG, it, of course, works fine.

Yesterday, I hit the reset button on the back of the conitech router (because they didn't have the password) and went through the setup wizard, connecting my HAG to the WAN port on the router and it worked fine, both connecting via wireless and with a cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

Today it is no longer working. Both wireless and LAN show it is connected but I can't access the internet.

Any ideas on this? I'm guessing you'll need me to post ipconfig /all but I'm not sure if I should do it with my computer connected to the HAG and working, or connected to the conitech router. Let me know and I will paste.

Thanks!

Router: Dlink WBR 2310

Setup -> internet --> modem --> router -->pc(wired to router)

connecting directly to the modem gives me speeds of 4200kbps d/l and 700kbps u/l. Page loading is instant

connecting to the router gives me 4200 kbps d/l and 95 kbps u/l. Page loads are slow (15 seconds)

Any ideas, i've tried searching for someone with the same problem(perhaps not putting in correct terms) and also looked for help on optimizing my routers configuration.

Where can I start to figure out whats the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

Hi,
I have the laptop and pc connected wirelessly to a gateway modem/router.
The laptop is fine but the pc isn't connecting to the internet despite the fact that the connection is strong. I paid an engineer to connect everything, and before he left he said it was working but he had to uninstall zone alarm on the pc. He didn't wait for the pc to reboot to check it and now the phone number I had for him isn't working. I don't know when I will be able to contact him again so I thought someone here might be ablt to help.
The pc has windows xp (without service pack 2 if that makes a difference.)

It has worked initiallywhen I first got the router but that was before the engineer secured it.

Everytime now when i open IE or FF I get a message saying 'do you want to go online or stay offline' and a drop down box but the new wireless connection doesn't show in the options.

I would be grateful for an y advice,

Cheers

A:Router connected but can't get onto the internet

Well, SP2 fixes a bunch of wireless issues on XP, so I think that should be a first step. You can simply plug in with a cable to download SP2 for that machine.

She's already done all the troubleshooting options (presumably including resetting IP address etc.)
She's also tried the whole

netsh winsock reset catalog

thing. None of this works. What can I do to fix this? Any ideas? I can ask her for extra information if necessary.

Thanks,

If you aren't using the msoft virtual wifi mini port then you should disable it because it can cause all sorts of connection problems including DNS problems when it's active and not being used. It might also help to disable the bluetooth adaptor if it's not in use.

I also noticed that your two DNS servers which do not appear to be coming from the router, maybe you typed them into your IPv4 properties window? In any event it sometimes works better to type the DNS server addresses into your routers settings rather than using IPv4.

First post - Hi

I have a problem that has been going on for a while now. My internet will be fine for hours but suddenly I will lose connection to the internet but I will still be connected to the router and can access the router page. When I diagnose the connection I get the message "DNS isn't responding".

When this happens it isn't only my computer that loses internet, every thing in the house does (laptop, iphone, xbox 360).

Usually after a few minutes it will fix itself but this is very annoying as I am into online gaming.

I am connected wirelessly to the router, as are the iphone and laptop. The 360 is connected to the router through a homeplug. My router is a D-Link.

Yesterday I updated the wireless adapter driver but didn't help.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks.

A:Connected to router but not internet

You already pointed to the problem...but then you were trying things elsewhere to solve it. If you can always access your router's page, that means the problem has to be occuring past your router. Most likely, it means you have a flaky cable modem or the line into your house isn't of the best quality. Either one should be directed to your ISP.

My laptop (Asus G73J) is connected to my router, however, has limited access. All other wireless devices in the house are able to connected to the router with internet, including another laptop. I have also already contacted my internet provider and my router provider to no avail. I looked at many other threads to see if anyone else has had my problem and as of now everyone who has, was able to fix it in ways that have not worked for me.

I have already put "ipconfig" in my command prompt and found out that I do not have a Default Gateway, in other words this shows up "Default Gatway .....:". Additionally it says that the Tunnel adapters have "Media Disconnected". I have been working on this for about 3 weeks, Please Help.

A:I am connected to the router with no internet

I've had similar intractable problems from time to time where even after reading up and posting for assistance you still remain stuck. Although I don't know the answer things that I'd try are checking to see if there is a firewall and turning it off briefly for purposes of elimination. I'd check to see if there is an updated driver for the wireless card. Have you been into Control Panel, Network and Sharing Centre and tried to set up a new network? Any problems flagged up in Computer, System Properties, Device Manager?

You haven't mentioned whether this is a problem that has arisen after a period of normal operation or whether it has been present from day one. If it worked OK previously as a last resort there's the return to factory condition option but it's a pain and you'd lose everything on the laptop so I'd hold fire on that. Can it connect to the router successfully with an ethernet cable?

Anyway that's a few things to think about if you've not tried them all already.

hello, i'm having a problem with my router, it's kind of tricky, here's the thing, i have a netgear mr814 v3 router, at first the router gave me a hard time, but i pulled it off after a while, i connect to the internet through a webstar modem (a big piece of crap, i know, but it's what i got though), i connected the modem to the router and this to the ethernet but i couldn't open any website, so i connected the usb port of the cablemodem to the computer too (it was connected to the router through ethernet and then the router to the computer through ethernet and also the modem connected to the computer through usb) i don't know what i had to do this, it's really strange, but it worked, so i left it that way, and, like a month later (today) the modem was offline, and i resetted it, and it came "online" but i wasn't getting a connection, so i did the same again and again, so i called tech support, they did a reset remotely or something like that, and it worked again, however, when i connected the router i wasn't getting any connection to my wireless equipped devices, and then I tried to open a website and my pc was also offline, it was connected in the same way as before, but know it didn't work, and i tried the conventional setup, i connected the modem to the router and the router to the pc, but everytime i do this i can't get a connection in my pc, don't know why though, so i was hoping some tech genius in t... When you change the connected device on a broadband modem, you need to cycle power on the broadband modem, or it won't connect.

Hello,

I've been having problems with my internet configuration. my laptop has been working well until one day it refused to connect to the internet. I tried a system restore and it put my internet back to normal but the problem would come back everytime I restarted my computer. I kept the computer on standby mode instead of shutting it off recently but a windows update shut my pc down while I wasn't looking at the computer. I cant get the internet connection back to how it was even with a system restore.

Here's what I've got so far:

My computer is running on a Korean version of Windows Vista

My router isn't the problem as other people in my house can connect to the internet.

Hi -

My gf's laptop, the one in question, is an Acer Aspire 5920, Model ZD1 using Windows Vista.

Two days ago the internet stopped working completely. Her laptop is connected to my network, no viruses (as far as Windows Defender detected none), and even when hardwire connected we couldn't get on the internet.

We've tried both IE and FireFox. My computer works fine, so it's not the network.

The IPConfig results gave me a "Media Disconnected" message under the Tunnel Adapter reports and no DNS Suffix (underneath the same).

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

A:Help - No internet, even when connected to router!

Please download the free, portable ClamWin antivirus and scan your gf's laptop with it.
It's available here: http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/clamwin_portable
Make sure that you update it before carrying it over to your gf's laptop.

Ok, the XP Wireless Configuration Utility displays that I am connected, although it's strange because once it does connect, the icon disappears from the taskbar. However, I cannot access the internet, or my router by http (but I can ping my router and other devices connected to it). The router also shows that I am connected to it. Also, at the moment I am obtaining the IP address and DNS server address automatically and not using any form of encryption.

Here are my specs:

I get a red X over the internet icon and my router will no longer recognize any networks. I called my ISP and the manufacture of my Belkin router. So I went out and bought a brand new Net Gear router. Still not working. I called Net Gear and they think it's my wireless card?

Is there a way to determine for sure if its a hardware problem?

Maybe I need to download a driver?

Is there a wireless switch on my laptop?

Do I need to configure my new router? I'm hoping to use my Belkin router if it's just a driver problem so I can take back the new router and get my money back.

What are some first steps to take? If you need more information, please let me know. Thank you!

yes

Check the wireless is switched ON
theres often a physical switch or a combination of the FN and one of the F keys to toggle the wireless on/off
often F2 is used - but note , not always - look for a symbol that looks a little like (( i ))

is the wireless on?

Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file to the faulty PC and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply

I have a desktop and a laptop that are connected to my router but can't connect to the internet. One of our other desktops is working great. Another had the same issue and I fixed it using the "netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt" command.

I've tried the following on the remaining computers:

netsh int ip reset c:/resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset catalog
ipconfig /flushdns > Iponfig /release > Ipconfig /renew

The command prompt fixes are new to me, so I'm not sure what they do exactly but it fixed one computer, I just cant get it to work on the others. I've also switched between static and dynamic ip's using network properties.

I'm getting pretty frustrated.

The Media disconnected on the ethernet probably means a defective NIC or cable.

Try a dynamic connection on the wireless.

To configure a dynamic IP address on your Windows Vista or 7 computer:

1. Click Start.
2. Select Network, then Network and Sharing Center, and click Manage network connections or Change adapter settings from the list of tasks.
3. Right click the connection of interest and click Properties.
4. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) from the list and click the Properties button.
5. Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
6. Select Obtain DNS Server address automatically.
7. Click OK.
8. Click Close.

My linksys adapter wont connect to the internet, but will connect to the router. I think that it is not getting an IP address. And yes, I have updated drivers and all that jazz.

Here are some screenshots.

DHCP Client Disabled? hmm..

Thanks for any help

A:Linksys: Connected to the router, but not the internet

you have an IP of all zeros

------------------------------------------------------------------------
From a Johnwill post

IP addresses of all zeros are normally caused by one of the following.

Diagnosis:
DHCP Service not running.
Duplicate IP address on the network.
Bad NIC card drivers.
Defective NIC hardware.

Resolution:
Check Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. The DHCP Client service should be Started and its Startup Type should be Automatic.

Turn off ALL of the computers and other network connected devices, restart (power cycle) the router, then restart all the computers and other network devices.

Check for upgraded drivers and/or reload the Network drivers.

Replace the Network Interface Card.

Hello everyone,
I have two computers at home - one connected to a router via wire, the other via wireless.
The first PC is used most of the day, the second mostly at evening.
I recently upgraded my internet subscription to 10Mbit.
The connections is fine as long as only PC #1 is working (~1000 kb/sec). As soon as PC #2 is turned on, the speed drops drastically (~100 kb/sec), even if it nothing major is done on it, such as casual web browsing (no dl, no youtube, no streaming etc).
What's going on here? What can I do?

Thanks!

If the method in the link below doesn't work than most likely the router needs a firmware update in order to work correctly with Windows 7.

It will connect to router but will not go to internet and keeps saying that the modem isn't connected or that its unidentifiable. I have turned off security and it worked but I can't leave security off because of the work I do online. Now that I have turned on the security it won't connect to internet. Please help I have been fighting with this for two days and it's really getting to me.

So, I restarted my linksys router (WRT54G model) yesterday because of some issues I was having. Right now, I have full bars for connectivity on all my devices (Acer Aspire laptop running Windows 7 starter) when the Ethernet cord is connected from the modem to the router, but I have no internet access. Only when my laptop is connected directly to the modem, I have access to the internet (but ofcourse no wireless). How can I fix this problem?

A:Router connected, but no internet access

A restart will not cause any problem like that. Maybe you were switching devices connected to the modem and forgetting to power cycle the modem when switching?

I have read most of the responses to the same type of problem but none of them have got my XP pc to connect to the internet. I am using Wireles and LAN.
My router was Netgear DG843N which was intermittently dropping the connection to the net. I tried corrective action but the problem continued.
On the advice from Netgear tyech support,I tried just using LAN - that didn't work. Then they suggested using another router,so I purchased a Netgear DGN1000 Router.
This did not resiolve the problem so I contacted Netgear who suggested several things to do.As the XP was connecting to the router both wireless and LAN we decided that it was not a router problem.
All of my devices attached o the router ( printer - Vista pc- Win 7 laptop)are working correctly, just the XP pc that is not.
Details of the pc are :- Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600

I have spent hours trying the suggestions from this site and wonder if anyone was willing to help me.
