-This is a repost, as last time i only had a single response, and no replies after that-

Hello once again Sevenforums.

For the last few days, i have had a rather frustrating problem with my system. It doesnt want to POST.
Let me explain this; Turning the computer on is a mystery. The initial startup seems pretty standard, except that there is no beep, Fans run at 100%speed for a few seconds, and nothing appears on the screen. If i then turn it off via the ON/OFF button, and start the system anew, it will first turn on for a second, then go off again. Waiting 4-5 seconds, the System "magically" starts itself up, with the same symptoms as mentined before.

This all has happened after a recent LAN party, where a power shortage apparently may have been the sinner. Just mentioning, i am writing this using that system, as it can still BOOT using a few primitive measures. Removing the source of power to the computer ( by first removing the power cable, and then turning off the outlet before re-inserting it ) and consecutively turning it on, it will 50% of the time POST and start up as usual.

One thing to note also, is that recently, every time i have / have been opted to save a file on my local hard drive, the system has made a loud BEEPing noise similar to the one coming at the strtup.

Your Regards: Tegewaldt

One of your ram sticks may be zapped/faulty.
Pull one stick - test, then the other/s.

If not > motherboard - try resetting Cmos with board pins first. (remove ALL leads from your pc first inc electric lead)

Cheaper to buy an anti-surge multi plug socket to take with you next time - eh?

Hello! I have a Dell laptop, running Windows 7. Yesterday my cat walked across the keyboard and literally that very moment, my internet lost connection.

It wasn't a case where she disabled the wireless capability by pressing the combination of fn and F2. The wireless is turned on, and is in face connected to the wireless network.

The troubleshooter said that the problem is that "default gateway is not available." Also, when I look at the network's properties, IPv4 Connectivity says "No internet connection."

I did a system restore to the night before and nothing changed.

I also tried resetting the IPv4 by entering "netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log" on the command prompt but this did not fix anything.

This afternoon I turned on the laptop again and for a split second, it said I had internet access but the yellow exclamation point came up quickly and I no longer had it.

I am on my old laptop right now and the connection is just fine, and it's also working for my roommate's computer.

Does anyone know how I might be able to fix this? Many thanks in advance.

A:Settings changed? No IPv4 internet access & "Default Gateway N/A"

Right after I posted this, I turned on the affected laptop. Because I had accidentally left it on earlier, the battery ran out so it ran startup repair. The internet worked for about 10 minutes or so. Now it's out again.

Hello, a few days ago my computer with XP Pro SP3 installed was infected with the malware "XP Home Security 2011" and every attempt I've tried to remove it from my computer has failed so far. I noticed it first when I turned my computer on a few days ago, a window for the fake antivirus program popped up upon start up and started "scanning," which told me had found numerous viruses. AVG failed to load, but Ad-Aware did and upon trying to open AVG the fake XP Home Security window pops up again instead of AVG, which I assume blocks AVG from even opening. The same problem happens with Malwarebytes. Upon trying to access the internet through Firefox leads me to a "security warning" page that the malware set up, hijacking my browser. It says that the browser could potentially give me viruses but allows me the option to continue "unprotected," but when I click the link to continue the security warning page reloads, and to keep clicking the continue link reloads the security page ad nauseam. Internet explorer is the only other browser on my computer and the same problem happens with that browser, as I'm on a different computer now. The program "awr.exe" is the name of the window that pops up when the fake antivirus program runs and ending that program in the task manager will close that window, but the internet and program blocking continues.

Now when I start my computer, programs that would normally load at startup will f... Read more

Hi!

When I turned off my laptop yesterday evening the only thing I changed that day was a new automatic update of Firefox.

This morning my computer settings are all gone and two new users were created.
Not really new users - just two new folders appeared in Windows Explorer - name of my user name ("pc") and then additional: pc.PC-WO0373K371MS.000 and .001.

Outlook Express and Firefox and also several other programs are behaving as if they were just new installed - all my settings are gone (email connection, bookmarks, Firefox remembered passwords, OE folders+emails...).

I seem to remember that I had the same problem after the last automatic Firefox update and that I at that time painstakingly did change everything from scratch (localizing my lost OE folders+emails and import them etc.etc.etc.) but now I am really annoyed and think there might be an easier way to get my settings back?

System Restore did not work since I had never heard of it before and so I discovered that it was disabled...

Can somebody help?

Thanks,
Maria

Every time I log on to my computer, I get a warning message from Symantec that, "Some Symantec product settings have been changed by an unauthorized program. This can indicate that an attacker or a virus is attempting to disable your protection. To avoid problems, settings will be reverted to the previous configuration and your system will be restarted. Click OK to continue."

Well, first, after clicking OK, the system is not (thankfully) restarted. Second, when I click on the "Symantec Technical Support Knowledge Base" link, it takes me to an explanation that is similar, but not exactly my problem. It suggests rerunning LiveUpdate. I have. I still get the stupid message.

I'm using Norton Systemworks 2003 on a Windows 2000 machine.

Any ideas how I can get this to go away?

Hello,
First let me tell you about my system.   This is an Inspiron
E1705/9400 laptop with the T7400 Core 2 Duo processor running at 2.16
GHZ.   It has 2 GB of RAM and a brand new 500GB Hitachi Travelstar hard
drive (7200 RPM).   It also has the GeForce Go 7900 GS video card.
It previously had Windows XP Professional (32 bit) and worked fine.
But, I have three computers in my home and home office and would like
them all to work better together on my wired home network, so I am
upgrading all three to Windows 7.   My two desktops (one is Dimension
XPS 420 and the other is Dimension XPS 430) seem like they will be no
problem to upgrade to Windows 7.   But, this laptop was not listed on
Dell's Windows 7 Compatibility List.   However, the Windows 7 Upgrade
Advisor that I downloaded and ran seemed to say that it was OK to do a
clean install of 32 bit Windows 7 and it only had a few minor concerns,
where it said to check for updated drivers from the manufacturer.   The
laptop originally came with a 100GB hard drive.   For my use, that is
getting very small, so I decided to get the same exact 7200 RPM drive
in the 500 GB size.   This will allow me to do a clean install of the
32 bit Windows 7 OS on the new hard drive and not have to wipe the old
drive to do it.   I can just hold onto the old HD and stick it back in
whenever I might ... Read more

A:disable "hardware, Advanced, System Protection, Remote" tabs in system

I'm inclined to say no, for a very simple reason.
Changing the computer name requires administrator access. Given that, the user already has full control over the entire computer, therefore he can change whatever he wants.
What's the purpose of such "limitation"?

We are getting the above error randomly on some of the laptops we have deployed. The error comes right after you boot or when the windows 7 is left running. There are no special software running. The error in details is below.
"The boot configuration Data (BCD) settings for the following boot application have changed since Bitlocker was enabled
boot appplication: \windows\system32\winload.exe
change settings: 0x26000090
You must supply a bitlocker recovery key to start this system.
Confirm that the changes to the BCD settings are trusted.

If the changes are trusted then suspend and resume bitlocker. This will reset bitlocker to use the new BCD settings.
Otherwise restore the original BCD settings"

Can anyone please explain on how to correct this error. As before this is happening on few of the machines and we are seeing more as we go. Any tips would be nice...Thanks

I apologize but having searched other threads on the same subject and having no luck I think I need to describe my problem specifically.

I had a hard drive failure so just fitted a new WD internal drive to my desktop and freshly installed Win 7 Pro, 64Bit. It can't connect to a network and states "Windows did not detect any Networking Hardware". I've looked in the system info and can seeWAN Miniport (SSTP) listed among other things under network adapter. Is one of them it? It seems to have an associated driver listed but it's obviously not working.

I've spent the last two hours at least searching for an answer to this but hope someone here can now help. I have access to the internet using my Win 8 laptop (using it now to write this).

If you need more information on the system please let me know and I'll supply what I can.

Thanks for any help.

Hello once again, certainly using these forums now!

Another small and stupid problem!

Basically, I was sure before that when you view properties on my hard drive it showed something like "Hitachi.... etc".

Now however, it shows something like TBHS83HD928DJ instead of its name. I found out it is the SKU of the hdd by doing a google search.

Is this right? I know it shouldn't affect anything but it's just, stupid! LOL

Any ideas welcome!

A:Hard drive "name" changed to it's SKU!

It seems that it has happened to a lot of us. My drive in my laptop did the same thing only it is identified in the drive detection by its part numbe instead of the name like it used to be. It happened it seems after a Windows update to me. Everything seems to be fine it is identified correctly as far as size and all, just the displayed name has changed. The funny thing is that it hasnt happened to my desktop as well. It is displayed the same as it was the day I installed it. By the manufacturer & Model Number.

Hi, I need to find a fix for this issue I have with a change in Windows 8. I am running Windows 8 Pro and normally (in windows 7 and older) when I Right click on a folder, the default option for properties is "r". Nice and quick and next to my
left hand which rests on the left side of the keyboard. Now it has changed to "o" and not only that, there are 2 options for "o". Open and Properties. Very frustrating and not very easy to get around. Any way of getting around this whether
it be alternative software or reg hack or something... anything. Itsvery annoying.
Cheers

A:Right Click on folder and select "R" for Properties has changed to "O"

Well it looks like the US version oif the upgrade iso/cd is the version that has the r has properties. UK version is O which really doesnt make sense as open is O aswell so you have to press it twice then enter. I like my keyboard shortcuts so US version
is. Problem solved. language to install must read US (English) on the install screen.

Hi,

I'm using Windows 10 th2-10511 x64 and when I install EMET 5.5 final the EMET system service is installed with the "delayed start" flag and the service and never starts after a reboot. The same thing happened with the beta version, I didn't notice

I switched the service back to the normal Automatic (not delayed) start, and everything seems to be working again. I was wondering if anyone else experienced this issue?

Also, can someone enlighten me about this warning message "DEP/ASLR Policy settings are ineffective by default; see user's guide on how to enable them". It appears when I enable the DEP/ASLR EMET GPO. I couldn't find any reference to this warning

Hi Guys,

This is Ramesh. I am having a problem with my battery icon. I am running Windows 8.1 on my ACER Aspire 5755 laptop. When I start the OS, I was unable to see the battery icon in the notification area. Because of that my laptop gets shutdown abruptly in middle of my work, without warning to plugin the battery charger.

I searched for the solution in several forums. I got a temporary solution for it.

I get the battery icon in the notification area by doing this every time I logon to Windows 8.1.

Right Clicking on My Computer icon, clicking on Manage, and clicking on Device Manager, and Clicking on Scan for hardware changes.

I am here to ask you guys, Is there any possibility to make an entry in the start-up items for "Scan for hardware changes" in windows 8.1 or not. If Yes, please give me the solution.

My Laptop configuration is
OS: Windows 8.1 (32-bit)
Processor: Intel I3
RAM: 4GB (2.46 Usable)

Thanking You.

I added a slave drive to my Windows XP Pro computer, and it appears to work properly.

However, when I open the "Documents and Settings" folder (on the slave drive E:\, which is Windows XP Home Edition -- not XP Pro), I do not see any of my documents, sub-folders, etc. There should be MANY sub-folders (inside the "My Documents" folder which isn't even visible), with hundreds of documents, jpgs, etc. within it.

When that drive is installed as the Primary drive in my other computer, the User "Larry" (which is me) has all Administrative privileges. On the computer that I'm running now (with the slave drive in it), I also have Administrator privileges. I own both computers.

My User Name "Larry" is password-protected when I login to Windows (when the drive is Primary and installed into my main computer (not this computer with XP Pro).

I've tried clicking on all the users; Administrator, Default User, Larry, Guest, etc. (Note: I get an "Access Denied" error when clicking on the Guest "Documents and Settings" folder).

So, the questions are:

1. Why can't I see any files or subdirectories in the "Documents and Settings" folder on the slave drive?

2. There's supposed to be a folder named "My Documents," but I can't find it. Normally, that path is "C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents".

I Just installed my system with Windows XP Pro SP3. But I have a very strange problem.

I have installed hundreds of computers before but have never come accross this, I have 3 SATA drives in RAID and another 1TB drive as a backup souce. Now when I installed I selected the RAID array as the installation destination, and all went fine. But now that I am in windows this is what I see:

As can be seen, my 1TB HD has been set as the C:\ root and the RAID array with windows on as D:\ When installing programs they are directed to D:\

I think this has something to do with the MBR but Ii do not want to go and remove/remake it without been sure first, does anybody know how to sort this mess out please without a reinstall?

I contacted Norton and (after several attempts to find someone at Norton who could understand what I just said above and getting "hung-up" on over Norton chat. Inexcusable!!!) I was able to get a hold of a technician who told me that Norton intentionally removed this option "for security reasons, because they didn't want people turning it off".

The problem is, people will then be forced to turn it off by turning off ALL scheduled tasks (under "Settings/Scheduling/Schedule:Manual Schedule") and that is an even worse security problem than the relatively small one that would be created by turning off idle-time full system scanning.

Once the system has completed a full system scan, all files are on-access scanned anyway, so running a full system scan every 3-4 days is rather silly and extremely annoying--especially, because it will continue to try to run every time the system is idle if you cancel it.

A warning urging the user to not turn off idle-time full system scans without fully understanding the risks, and after explaining the risks, would be VERY preferable. Or at least the option to run the full system scans when the system is idle on a certain day of the month/week! The schedule for idle-time full system scans really needs to be separate from other tasks. In fact, t... Read more

So I have this weird thing happening in my relatively fresh install of Windows 10.
Whenever I search for "Check for Updates" or "Windows Update settings" on the search box of the start menu, I get the results that I want but if I press enter or try to click on those results nothing happens.. As far as I know I can click all others search results but those, and maybe others related to windows update.

I can still get updates by going to Settings>Update & Security though.

In my other computers this works fine, and as far as I can tell all the updates are done.
From what I've searched around other people seemed to have a similar issue where they couldn't acess the settings at all which isn't my case. Still I tried the sfc/ scannow that a lot of users seemed to recommend but no results.

A:Can't click on "Check for Updates" "Windows Update settings" on Start

Spanker,
.............. Still I tried the sfc/ scannow that a lot of users seemed to recommend but no results. .....................

Please clarify what did you mean by "no results".

When sfc /scannow is completed, it will give you one of the following 3 reports....................(paraphrasing)

1. No integrity violation.
2. Found corrupted files and repair is successful.
3. Found corrupted files but unable to repair some of them.

Which one of the above is applicable to you ?

I'd like to back up (and be able to restore upon win7 reinstall) all my heavily-customised Indexing Options settings.

e.g. I have VERY customised list of file types that I have ticked in the Advanced Options, to the "Index Properties and File Contents" type instead of just "Properties" - which is kind of essential for *really* properly searching my computer and my documents. Like publisher files, have text in them that I really need to be able to find, and by default PUB is set to Properties only....so I have many file types like this ticked to actually be properly indexed.

And what a pain it would be to have to manually go through and tick every one upon system reinstall (not to mention, remember/note down what ones that i ticked, beforehand!).

Are the settings stored somewhere in the registry? In some system file inside windows/USER folder?

Let's hunt down for where it's stored. Nothing in windows can't be backed up.

Thanks.

A:How to back up the "Indexing Options" settings? [registry/system file?

Hello there. This should help you.

Quote:
1. Please click the Windows Pearl (Start button), type "Indexing options" without quotation marks, and press Enter.
2. Click "Modify" button to modify Indexed Locations, for default locations after a clean installation is followings:

Offline Files, Start Menu and Users.

And you could uncheck the selects.

3. Click Advanced button, in the "Index Settings tab", click "Rebuild" to rest the index.

You may also click "Troubleshoot search and indexing" for a troubleshooting wizard.

Hi,

I am new to this forum. I have searched for a thread will same or similar issue, but could not find anything relevant. I do apologize in advance if my noobness got the better of me.

The issue:

I started having this issue right after I had ran Malwarebytes to get rid of "Ads by sponsor" malware/virus. At first the update service, BITS services were not running and wouldn't run after trying to manually restart them. Then I read a thread somewhere where it said to reset the netsh stuff. I did that then restarted, the services are running, but now it is showing this message "Some settings are managed by your system administrator".

I have no idea how to fix this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

How can I overcome this matter?

Firstly you need to turn on system restore and allocate some space for it to use. Have a look here see if it helps you to get it enabled - System Restore - Enable or Disable

Thought I posted this on 7Forums already, I usually come here first...

I'm beginning to think that either my computer hates me or the System Restore Partition provided by Toshiba is corrupt. This will be the third or fourth time, I think, that I am reinstalling Windows. Each install has a different issue. It's been so long I don't even remember the first problem anymore.
The solutions posted by a user on MS Answers were sporadic in function. It took several reboots to get them to begin to work. They did not solve the problem, though. (If you're interested: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...=1341094846693)So, this particular problem is that something has modified some policy and locked me out of changing my Power Plan. The current plan is high performance, but it's been modified to be really hi-po and very inefficient. I can't change any options to make do with this plan, either.

Been to a bunch of Windows forums looking for answers, nobody can solve it.

Hello,
Im not sure if this is in the right topic, so sorry if it isnt.

I have a a machine that keeps rebooting itself when coming up to the log in screen.

The machine is a Dell Optiplex 990 with 12gb ram and 1tb HDD.

At first i thought it was a windows update reboot loop when "configuring windows updates" however i have now cleared the windows updates and it still reboots its self when it says "applying computer settings" or even when its just at "Ctrl Alt +Delete to sign in".

If im quick enough I can log in when it give me the option and the pc wont reboot at all,
So it looks like after a certain amount of time before login the computer reboots itself for some unknown reason, i have checked the event viewer and theres nothing significant in there.

Im hoping this is something in the registry i can tweak to stop it doing this.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Based on my research and found that your problem might be caused by following IE option was unchecked.
You can try to check the following option for test:

When this option was unchecked, the option "Go to an intranet

Can you pleas explain me what does Hardware Acceleration means and why is that when it is turned on, it causes a green screen on the video (with audio working).
It happened to me once in YouTube, where I had to go in to settings and unpick the "Enable Hardware Acceleration", then it worked!
And 2nd time similar thing happened in Cyberlink PowerDirector 10, when I imported .mp4 and flv video files and it showed me green screen with audio. After unpicking "Enable Hardware Decoding " it was fixed.
My Sony VAIO has:
CPU - Intel Core i5 M430 2.27GHz
RAM - 4GB
GPU - AMD Radeon HD 6500M/5600/5700
Does this mean that I have a problem with my hardware, or maybe I need to set up something??? to ba able to use Hardware Acceleration. As I understand I should be able to use it!!??

Thank you

I haven't played around with different screen resolutions to see if it has any effect.

I wonder if it needs some driver update or related to my screen resolution or whatever? Thanks.

I really don't know, but the Nvidia driver automatically makes some adjustments, depending on what it is installed on. I suspect that they feel no one would want the large text on a small display.

Hi all,

Issue: The sound on my internal laptop speakers does not work when I try to play audio.

Solution: However, if I go into "Device Manager" and click "Scan for Hardware Changes" on the "Sounds, video and game controllers" section, my sound returns instantly. The moment I click "Scan..." the sound appears straight away and plays back without issue.

The Problem: Problem is, while the sound plays back fine as long as I am playing sound, the problem of no sound returns once I stop audio payback. I've noticed I can stop playback and the sound will still play back for a minute or two, but if I don't play audio for longer than about 5 minutes the sound again disappears next time I try to play back and I have to do the "Scan..." thing again to get it working. It's as though my system keeps defaulting back to an incorrect setting or something after a few minutes.

External Speakers: There is no problem at all when I have my (bluetooth) external speakers selected. Sound plays through them fine.

What I've tried to fix:
- Troubleshoot both "Playback Audio" and "Hardware and Devices" through Control Panel, but neither fixes issue
- Update Driver Software for my "Conexant High Definition SmartAudio HD2", but it says I'm up to date
- Read the forums to find my specific problem, but couldn't...apologies if I've missed it.

Im getting a really annoying problem where my computer will get as far as "loading your personal settings" screen and basically hang up.

I had a virus infection just recently which i cleaned up. A few days later my computer started doing this. It boots up normally until it gets to the "loading your personal settings" screen then it will not go any further.

The mouse responds and there is hard disk activity but nothing happens. I also don't get the windows start-up sound. It will do this probably 9 times out of ten. When it does boot up all the way it works fine and runs perfectly. I had it running for 3 days without any problems.

Some more info:I have tried unplugging the computer from my router, this had no apparent effect.
The computer will boot up fine every time in safe mode & safe mode with networking
I have disabled everything in the start-up apart from AVG FREE edition. This has not had any apparent effect
I ran a check-disk last night and it found no errors.
when it hangs up, ctrl+alt+del does not work, alt+tab also does not do anything
I have downloaded the latest AVG setup file and ran a repair install, this had no apparent effect
I haven't ran system file checker since as the system works fine in safe mode i assume that the system files are probably fine.
i had avast on the system but it got really screwed up so in the end i used the avast uninstall tool to remove it.

I currently have left it sitting at "loading your persona... Read more

Yesterday I created two local users with admin rights, I changed their account pictures and changed the background color.
Everything worked fine.
Today when the other user should log in, she wasn't happy with her account picture. So I showed her how to change it. However, when she pressed her username and clicking on change account picture (this should open PC SETTINGS) nothing happend.
I logged in with my user, and noticed that I could not either press that button, but it worked perfectly yesterday.

I tried to walk around this issue by going to control panel and press user accounts. But from there nothing happends when you press "create a new user" for example. In short words: anything that should open the PC SETTINGS-program fails, and absolutely nothing happends.

Any clue why this is happening?

Thank you in advance.

A:Wierd problem with "PC Settings" Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Since noone answered I fixed this problem myself! This is what happends:

If you mark Remove Start menu shortcuts in CCLeaner (which i ran last night and had forghot) it deletes three crucial files in the start menu system that completely disables PC Settings... The file that gave me the error was the first of these.
They all reside in:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs (assuming you have Win8 on C. The filenames are:
PC Settings.lnk Remote Desktop Connection.lnk and Store.lnk
So, these looks like normal shortcuts, I don't know. Anyway, when I restored them (I have two computers running Windows 8 Consumer Preview) everything worked fine.

But when I try to disengage it by bringing up the "safely remove hardware" screen from the little icon in my sys tray about half the time I try and "stop" one of those devices I get the warning that it cannot be stopped now, and to try again later.
The drive is not in use or anything but I still get the warning... I've heard it's bad to unplug a thumb drive before "safely removing" it but sometimes I have no other option. Is there something about this that I'm missing? And how bad is it to just unplug the thing?

Thanks,
JTN

A:"safely remove hardware" problem

Sometimes there is no other choice other than to remove the drive. I occassionally run into the same problem. If you have anything important on the drive save it to a desktop folder and reformat the drive. I reformat mine every 3 or 4 months and it seems to help with that problem.

Hi,

I have Windows 8.1 on my new (april 2014) laptop.

After few weeks I noted some audio problems. When a video is on, the sound sometimes turns into a metallic "bzzz" sound (approx. half a second). It occurs whenever I open another tag in my browser, or when there is some Internet connection problem.

I am almost sure it is a software problem. Here's why.

I got rid of the "bzzzz" sound a first time after removing 3 trojans. After that, the sound was clean and perfect for a few weeks. Then it appeared again. I got rid of the problem a second time when I restored the previous Windows configuration (due to different problems). But after a couple of weeks the "bzzzz" appeared again. I got rid of it again when I reinstalled my antivirus software. But now it is here again. Not surprisingly, it got worse after the last periodical Windows update.

Any suggestions? I would prefer to avoid to restore the previous configuration again.

Thanks for any help.

A:Sound "bzzz" problem (not hardware)

Try turning off the AV. It's been known to interfere.

Ok, please bear with me for this. I find it very hard to explain and any help would be VERY appreciated.

I started up my PC 2 days ago, I found settings changed everywhere. My wallpaper and taskbar were default. Desktop icons had mostly disappeared, I was getting messages asking me whether I wanted to take the "Windows XP Tour"... Basically my entire system had changed to how it would be if I had just installed it.

All my programs were still there and at first it seemed that all of "My Documents" had been erased, leaving only empty My Pictures and My Music. The Files from my iTunes had gone missing as well. Later, on exploring I found a new folder called TEMP in Documents and Settings, which had no real files in it. My original folder Nisha where all my stuff actually was, was there too with all my files safe, in Documents and Settings as well. Anything saved to TEMP is erased on the next start up, any changes made in settings of programs are also reverted.

Fearing a virus or something else on those lines I ran Malwarebytes, QuickHeal and found nothing. I tried deleting the folder but I got a message saying it is a Windows Systems folder and is required for Windows to run properly.

I managed to delete it once in Safe Mode but it came back named "Nisha.HOME-MAHIM." And System Restore doesn't work, if I try to use it.

I don't know how to remove this problem, it is driving me nuts! Please help before I lose my hair and sanity. TIA!

A:Strange Problem- "C:\Documents and Settings\TEMP"

Your User Profile became corrupted and Windows logged you in with a Default Temp Profile. Go to Start/Run and type control userpasswords and press enter. Create a New User account with admin rights. Log out of the Temp profile you are in and log in as the new user. Go to C:\Documents and Settings and open up your old user profile Nisha folder. Copy the Desktop, Favorites, My Documents, and Start Menu folders and Paste them into your new user profile name overwriting the empty folders.

Hello,

I recently reinstalled Windows XP (home). It eventually came up with two users: Owner and Guest. I picked "owner" and changed its name to my sister's name (her computer); let's call her "Sara." I then added a user account for myself. But later she began to have problems finding her "favorites" and her desktop didn't always come up the same. Looking into this I found under "Documents and Settings" her user name and "owner". However, at the startup page where you pick which user account to open there is no "Owner" account listed.

Before reinstalling Windows I'm quite certain (99%) that there wasn't a listing for "Owner", I assume because it had been renamed.

I am tempted to delete Sara's account just to see if the owner account would show up, but worried about unforseen results. I had tried to delete the owner directory from the Documents and Settings folder but Windows would not let me as it had "System files" in it that windows needed to work.

What I want is for the Owner account to be in her name and to delete her account that's in her name but not the owner account. Or a way to force the owner account to show on the startup screen.

Also, while trying to find a way to fix this, one of the things I did was to try and create a user account called "Owner." Instead it created an acct. called "Owner_2" which I deleted but later I found... Read more

A:Solved: Problem with "owner" in Documents and Settings

Hi, and welcome to TSG

Its never a good idea to rename accounts because a lot of the time there will usually be conflicting between the two user names. Try deleting the account than putting it back and see what happens.

I was having problems with RDPing to my Win7 clients so I checked that remote desktop was enabled.  When doing so I saw that it informed me that I had to allow rdp access in the firewall which I know had been done before.  After looking around I realized that my network profile had been changed to "Public".  I also noticed that my active network shows as "unauthenticated".  What does this mean and how can I fix this?  How did this happen?  Thanks.

I was copying (cut and paste) data from one external hard drive (a 250 GB IDE Maxtor in a Adaptec USB enclosure) to another external (a 400 GB IDE Samsung in a Roswill USB enclosure). During the move. During this move, my Thinkpad T43p encountered a NMI Parity error, to which I'm still unsure what caused it, though I think it may have been my Dock II screwing stuff up. I did memtest 10 times over and my memory passed, so I am assuming its my Dock II. ANYWAYS...

So the NMI Parity error was a blue screen, and I restarted the computer. After the restart I noticed the Maxtor external hard drive was missing from my drive list, and in disk management it show as an uninitialized disk.

Okay, no biggie, I've dealt with this before. I tried using GetDataBack for NTFS, that failed to recover. Also failed were Active Partition recovery, Data Doctor Recovery, File Recovery, Restorer 2000, TestDisk, and ZAR.

I'm guessing my Master File Table is trashed and I can't recover it.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm trying to wipe/secure erase my computer hard drive and put it back to factory settings--the computer is getting sold. From reading the forums, I realize I can use clean all or other programs to write over the "deleted" data with ones or zeros.

However, my plan of action was to:
1. Use system recovery to put the computer back to factory settings
2. Create a system image
3. Use clean all from the command prompt to wipe the drive
4. Reinstall Windows 7 via installation CD
5. Restore via system image

The one problem is that I don't know if a system image saves absolutely everything, including data that had been "deleted" and is still present on the hard drive but is designated by the computer to be written over. I'm worried that if I do this, I'll just be undoing my attempt at securely erasing my hard drive and the "deleted" data will still be available for people to find if they tried.

Does anyone know? If this is true, I'll just do all of this and just reinstall the HP drivers and software that came with it manually and the hard drive won't have a recovery partition for the next person.

A:Does a system image save "deleted" data on the hard drive

I'm not sure I follow your steps. I'm missing why you'd install Windows 7, then restore. Do you have a Recovery Disk ?? If not can you still make one ?? If either is yes, then I'd wipe the drive and restore and be done with it.

On the other hand, if I was that concerned I'd probably just put another HDD in it and restore to it.

In answer to your question though, it depends on what you use to capture / apply the image. Imagex, by nature, simply gets the "meat" of the OS install and leaves behind anything else. Other stuff may well carry the "ones and zeros" of deleted data as well. I seem to recall once using a utility that grabbed the entire partition to apply elsewhere. I quit using it because it was more trouble than it was worth.

But by far the most secure method is to replace that hard drive and keep the drive that "might" have recoverable data and use it yourself as a spare or external drive.

I switched my Fujjitsu-Siemens Amilo li-1718 the other day and was met with the dreaded 'operating system not found' message.

I haven't changed anything big recently, and it's more or less been working fine for a long time now.

I had, however, just had it in a bag and moved it across town, so after reading up I thought maybe something might have come loose inside. But I also read that it could be a BIOS problem, and after going in there I noticed that under 'hard drive' in 'main' it said 'None.' Changing it to auto or user didn't seem to make much difference as it still wouldn't load and would always revert back to none.

However, I also read that if the computer keeps resetting itself to an arbitrary time and date that it can be symptomatic of a CMOS problem... my computer had been doing this occasionally for a month or two before this happened.

I also tried making a windows vista recovery CD, and tried to boot off that, but still got the same 'Operating System Not Found...' message.

Basically, I want to make sure i've tried everything before I open the case and go poking around inside, as I'd really have no idea what i'm doing, but i'm hoping it's just a loose wire that will be pretty self-evident when I open it up.

Any ideas?

You need to have a floppy with the proper driver then press F6 at the beginning of the Windows install process. With the proper drivers, Windows will find your hard drive (probabyl a SATA one) & will allow you to use it as a boot drive.

Let me recap, first of all, all of the occurances that may be relevant towards the current issue with my computer.

Actually, let me just start off by saying that I'm running a Gateway desktop that's at least 8 years old - probably more. There's a sticker on my computer which states, "designed for Windows 95." So, an old computer.

Anyway, a few weeks or months ago, my computer began making odd clicking noises. It only seemed to happen when I left my computer on for greater than 24 hours at a time (I live in a dorm.) I think maybe the first time I noticed these noises, a portion of the hard drive in question was damaged or erased. I recovered the files and began turning my computer off every night, and I haven't noticed the noises since.

Also, it should be noted that my computer has two hard drives, one which is about 20GB, that contains all my windows and program files, and another, which is about 40GB, that holds all my miscellaneous media files. The latter is the one which was damaged.

Getting to the point, I turned on my computer a few days ago to find a message indicating that "no operating system was found." I opened it up, just to make sure all the cables were connected, and they seemed to be. Now I'm noticing that Widnows XP only boots up when my media hd isn't connected. When it is connected, Bios does seem to recognize it, but only it, and no other drive. Such would probably be the reason why "no operating sys... Read more

I am using a 120GB portable hard drive for back ups and additional file storage. When defragging this drive, you are able to see how much space is actually "reserved for system files". Since this is not a bootable drive with no operating system on it, is there a way to recover this space that is reserved for system files? On this drive it amounts to about 10GB of space. If possible, how is this done?

Hi all,

Sorry to repeat a question I see a lot of instances of, but none of those seem to be addressing my problem correctly.

I have not done anything new to my computer in recent days, so this problem has caught me off guard (I see most instances of this problem come after upgrading to Windows 7, I have had Win 7 installed for a while now).

Here is a summary of my problem:
1) My computer recently got stuck on the "Starting Windows Screen." So I manually held the power button to reboot.
2) On reboot, it said there was a need to run a startup repair, which I did. Everything checked fine, except for the last one which said "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted," which it claimed to have successfully fixed.
3) After rebooting from repair, the system gets stuck on "Starting Windows Screen" for a good 10-15 minutes, after which it runs a registry check. After it completes that I get hopeful -- but the screen then gets stuck on an all black screen with just the mouse cursor and nothing more.
4) Additional note: Attempting to start the computer on "safe mode" leads safe mode startup to become stalled on "DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS"
5) The lastest attempt to repair yielded this message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

A:Stuck on "Starting Windows", Repair Shows "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted"

Hi Stan, Hopefully I can help you out....or at least lead you in the right direction. From my experience, the symptoms you are suggesting sound like perhaps a dying Hard drive.

1. Do you have the windows 7 boot disks that came with your computer or when you bought the Operating System? If so, you could try and insert one of those and boot from it, and attempt to repair the installation. (this won't affect your data, only the windows system files).

2. If that doesn't fix it, you could try a fresh reinstall of windows 7, and see if that works.

3. If neither of those work, its likely that because of the fact that when windows is repairing itself, it is generally putting copies of its system files in the same physical location on your disk. Because your disk is obviously not completely dead, ie....its still loading to the windows 7 startup screen, its just copying files to the bad sectors on your hard drive and gets stuck when loading. This is especially my guess because you said Safe mode is having same problems, even after attempting to repair. In the past, I've tried and salvage a disk by reformatting it and only leaving on partitions which do not contain the bad clusters. This takes some time, and some guess work.....and really this is only a "bandaid" fix because once the disk has bad clusters, its only a matter of time before these things give out. You wouldn't want to trust your important data on it anyways....

I hope this leads you in ... Read more

I have Drive D: system reserved 100MB. What is it used for and can I put in it a Macrium reflect restore file ( hard disk image)?

A:What is the "system reserved" partion of my hard disk used for ?

The System Reserved partition is used to hold the system boot manager, and is also used for:

1. Bitlocker Drive Encryption if you use Windows Professional or Ultimate
2. Accessed as part of some OEM recovery functionality

If you don't use the above, you can delete this partition, by carefully following these steps to easily move the boot manager to C:

Bootmgr - Move to C:\ with EasyBCD

The benfit to doing this is that you only need to specify a single partition -- e.g. C: -- for imaging using Macrium.

If you choose to keep the System Reserved partition, then you should include that in any Macrium image.

Hope that explains it.

Regards,
Golden

Hi guys. I'm new here. I've tried to read all the discussion about how to fix the unallocated hard drive but I just can't understand it as the cases were pretty much different than I'm facing of.

Here's my problem.
Yesterday my external hard drive seems normal, everything is fine, until there's a blackout and I have to put "sleep" to my laptop. After the power got back, the hard drive suddenly gone and when I check the list of drives under "Disk Management", it showed up as "Disk 1 - Unallocated".

(I've attached screenshots here for your viewing)

My external hard drive is WD My Passport 1TB. It contains a lot of valuable data I cannot afford to lose. I really hope there's a way to fix this, and once I get back all of those precious data I will buy another HD to transfer them ASAP because I cant let this happen to me again.

Your help is so, very much appreciated.
Any questions regarding my problem, let me know. I'll provide all of the details you guys need.

NOTE
1) I've tried TestDisk but on the "Analyse" process, it says "read error"
2) I've changed cable, but the situation remains the same.
3) I've tried Recuva, but it doesnt recognize my external drive.

A:WD EXTERNAL HARD DISK 1TB suddenly "unallocated" and "not initialized"

Hi!

First don't mess up with the WD drive settings.. download partition wizard 7 (its free)..then .. open it ..click wizard(menu) .. select partition recovery wizard.. and it will find the partitions on it i think.. that way you can recover your partition that has been lost.

I used a DriveWire - Universal Hard Drive Adapter (IDE / PATA / SATA to USB HDD Adapter) to hook up A 3.5" Hard Drive (Samsung model HD502HJ) to my desktop in an attempt to get my wife's files off her old desktop machine and merge them into mine. It all started off fine, the drive was recognized and I could see the files when I plugged in the USB cord. I started a NOD32 scan of the drive and a few minutes later a spark flew off my power strip and the fuse blew - looks like a letter opener shorted between two of the plugs. I think I killed the hard drive.

I replaced the power strip and started everything back up. The drive spins, but no longer is recognized by the computer when plugged in (no drive letter for it). Under Disk Management, I see the disk listed as "unknown" and "not initialized". Originally I had the option to right click and select "Initialize", and I was given option to use two partitiion styles (MBR or GPT).. I tried both to no avail, and get the "device is not ready" message.

I can right click select "Offline", and get the same message. right-click "Properties" say the device is working properly.

I plugged in another drive on the hard drive adapter and it works (so it's not the vault of the adapter). I try the same setup on my laptop and get the same results.

So I'm pretty sure I killed the drive. I just care about getting pictures and documents off it. Any advise? I know t... Read more

If you have killed the drive, there isn't very much you do about it. Even experts cannot sometimes recover anything, and it's just a wast of money.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

The tech guys on that forum were unable to find the source... Read more

I bought a new Memorex External DVD recorder. When I try to install it by plugging it in I get the following message: "Found New Hardware" followed by "A problem occurred during hardware installation. Your new hardware might not work properly." Note that there is no installation disk and the instructions just say to plug the recorder in and its supposed to be recognized and work. Do you think that there is something wrong with the recorder itself or is there something I'm doing wrong? Any advice would be apprecited.

Windows 7 Ultimate, Nvidia 730i board, 4 Gigs RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 @ 2.8GHz
Samsung Galaxy Note (Android) cell phone

I want to be clear that this is a USB port problem, NOT a phone problem.

There are twelve USB ports on this computer, eight of which are in use. The Samsung Galaxy Note works fine on ten of the twelve ports; but, there is a pair of ports on the front of the computer that give the following error when I connect the Note:
Hardware ID Missing. Windows cannot identify the device plugged into the Samsung Mobile Composite Device. For assistance, contact the hardware manufacturer.Click to expand...

The two front ports are connected by a wire directly to the main board and so are four of the rear ports. Other devices (USB flash drives, scanner, Palm Treo 680 cell phone) connected to the problem ports work fine. I think this could be a Windows Registry problem; but, that is just a guess and I have no idea how to fix this.

Any suggestions?

I am running XP. Everything was fine and then all of a sudden one day after starting up the computer...I get the pop up window [ image attached ]telling me there is "new hardware found. When I go to "cancel"...everything would "freeze".
I did not attempt to install any new hardware.
This happened like 4 times and then it just stopped happening.
Can someone tell me why that would happen? Is there a way to disable that pop up?
Thank you.

Which one should I do? I originally wanted to just do "Return computer to factory condition" but Theog just suggested "Use A System Image Created Earlier." I have no idea what to do. So confusing!

A:"Return computer to factory condition" or "Use A System Image Crea..."

Hello M4TE and welcome to Seven Forums. Sorry for the delay in responding but I just came across your question.

Most newer manufactured computers have a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive. The manufacturer provides specific instructions on how to access that partition in case you want to restore your machine to the exact condition it was in when it left the factory. That means you'd have to go through the time consuming process of cleaning out factory bloatware (like free trials of programs you'll never need), installing programs you do need, updating everything, creating your personal settings, etc. Here is a general idea of how to access the hidden recovery partition.

HP Recovery From Partition

Let's say it took you a day or two to set up your machine to your liking using the hidden recovery partition. A System Image is like a snapshot of your entire hard drive. It will include everything from the operating system to all your programs, files, photos, music, all updates ... everything. Most folks keep it on a separate external hard drive. Let's say a week later you get a virus or your machine crashes for some reason. You can use that System Image to return your machine to the exact condition it was in when you made the image. Usually takes about 30 minutes or so and you're back in business. It's a lot faster and more convenient to only worry about a week of updates compared to probably months with the hidden recovery partition. The newer a System Image is the... Read more

I have been getting these "Bad Pool Header" and "System Service Exception" BSODs for about a day now (the "Bad Pool Header" one tends to pop up more often then the other btw). I ran a registry cleaner which didn't work and ran memtest this morning and it showed that my memory was fine. The BSODs tend to occur more often when I am playing a game or running some program that uses a bit more memory but it also happens when I am just on the internet. On the other hand, last night I did nothing but surf YouTube for 3 hours and didn't get a BSOD at all. However, since then I haven't been able to do anything for more than 10 minutes (without being in safe mode) without it crashing, and this morning it completely froze until I turned it off. My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. It came preinstalled from the manufacturer and unfortunately I do not have the install disc. The entire laptop is less than 2 years old and there have been no major hardware changes and I have never reinstalled the OS.

A:Random "Bad Pool Header" and "System Service Exception" BSODs

UPDATE: Another BSOD just happened after I left the computer idle for a couple of hours except this one said something about Asdsm.sys.
