Notebook won't boot, charge, or recognize charger

Q: Notebook won't boot, charge, or recognize charger

Hi, Recently the main fan on my notebook failed. Thus, I found a new cooling assembly part on ebay, ordered it, and installed it. The installation process required the complete disassembly of the notebook. I followed a video guide for this. I am well aware that disassembly voids any kind of warranty, this machine was already well out of warranty. After re-assembling the notebook, it doesn't boot or show any signs of life. I have tried all combinations of powering on with and without battery, with and without AC adapter, and with and without the hard drive. The computer's charging light doesn't light up when the adapter is plugged in, but right after I insert the plug to the computer, I hear a very faint clicking once or twice where it plugs in. I am curious if possibly during the disassembly/reassembly process I broke a power component to the computer or possibly shorted out something on the motherboard. I didn't use an antistatic wristband during the process however in hindsight I definitely should have. I'm curious as to which part could possibly need replacing according to the symptoms described above. I double checked that all plugs were properly inserted as well. Hopefully someone can point me towards whether the problem is with the DC-in power component within the computer or perhaps the entire motherboard. If it's just the little DC component, could that be easily replaced? Thanks,Matt

My notebook is not charging. I don't know if it's the charger that's not working or could it be the charging port on the notebook itself. I have been charging it for the past few days and it's doing pretty well until I plugged it on a socket and didn't charge anymore. Tried checking the charger, it smelled a little burnt on the blue end with the pin and also on the charging port. When I plugged it, there was no popping sound whatsoever that could lead to me assuming it had a short circuit. Checked the socket, it was compatible with the charger. What am I to do?

Hi All My Elitebook 850 battery recently stopped holding charge.  I took the battery out, and the AC Charger still provided power so was able to use without battery.  I then purchased a new battery.  Now, the AC charger won't show charging on the new battery, but when I take the battery out, I can use the laptop without the battery. When the new battery is installed, it doesn't say anything like "plugged in, not charging," it just says nothing at all.  But obviously the charger works as it powers without the battery in. Have tried uninstalling the drivers in Windows through Device Manager > Batteries > Uninstall Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Battery Method + Uninstall AC Adaptor, with no result.  Turned the computer off, took the battery out, then powered up without battery, uninstalled the drivers, powered back off, reinstalled the battery, powered back up off residual charge in the new battery, with drivers reinstalled, still no luck. Anyone have any thoughts?  Please and thank you. Mike

The other day when I went to use my laptop there was a pop that came from the charge socket, then the laptop would shutdown if the charger was plugged in. Then the next day the laptop said it was charging when plugged in but the battery continued to drain until it won't turn on anymore. I checked that the fuse hadn't blown in the charger and also opened up the laptop and couldn't see any burns near the charge socket.

Well, my HP laptop charger is not working so I tried to charge with a Dell charger I had and it worked.

Now reading in the internet, I read that it might be dangerous especially since I am using less amps than specified. The specs of the 2 chargers are as follows:

HP Charger: 19 V, 4.74 A
Dell Charger: 19.5 V, 4.62 A

I read that the voltage difference should not cause a problem but using a lower Amp capacity charger than the original might. Will this small difference matter or can I still use the charger?

Thanks

A:Can I use my Dell Charger to charge my HP Laptop?

In a word... Yes. As long as the Dell chargers connector fits snugly and it doesn't get too hot, it should be fine

I'm trying to find a portable charger that has enough juice to power up my Surface Book. I've noticed all portable chargers that are branded for surface book usually don't have enough, and only have enough for the Surface Pro series. Price isn't an issue, but the size/weight I would like to be on the lower side. Thank you!

Hi. I have a Toshiba Satellite L40. It's kinda old, but I've always been able to get it to work. It's battery is shot, so I've been using it plugged in all the time (which is okay, since I don't move it around that much). It's originally charger went bad a while ago, so I bought a new one from Toshiba (it's a better one, in my opinion since it has an LED indicator).

It's been fine for roughly a year, but suddenly went crazy an hour ago. It stopped providing power (the power supply light on the laptop is off), and the LED on the charger is blinking rapidly. When it's plugged in to the outlet, but not to the laptop, the LED on the charger is a steady, bright green.

But the moment I plug the tip in to the back of the laptop, it starts blinking. Since the battery is shot, I quickly lost power and now my laptop is completely drained and inoperable. I've tried removing the battery and plugging it in, but the same thing happens. Also, when I unplug it from the socket, the charger retains enough power to stay on for a maybe 20 seconds (and it's the same thing: steady if it's unplugged on both ends, blinking if it's still plugged into the laptop, even if it's unplugged from the socket).

Has my charger or laptop gone bad? Or is there just something to fix? I've tried unplugging everything for 45 minutes to let it discharge and cooldown, but no luck. Should I wait some more? Thanks.

This started almost a week ago. I would plug in my charger and it would blink orange but if I took out the charger and re-plugged it in it would charge normally. Currently my PC completely died and every time I try to plug in the charger the light simply blinks a few times and nothing happens. HELP!'

A:Charger blinking orange but computer won't charge

Blink orange is an indication of : The battery has reached a low battery level, a critical battery level , or there is a battery error. Try the following steps Shut down the system and disconnect all the external devices connected to the PC.Disconnect the AC power from the wall outlet. Remove the battery from its compartment.Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds continuously. Now put back the battery & reconnect it to the AC power wall outlet. If the notebook it coming on try performing battery test using F2 diagnosis?s. Turn off you unit ? restart ? keep tapping esc at startup Press F2 from the status up list and perform a battery test. Depending on the results we may suggest you. Please click on the below link to view the steps. http://h20628.www2.hp.com/km-ext/content-webapp/document?docId=emr_na-c01443317

Asus u45jc-a1 laptop. My laptop charger cable is in pretty bad shape. You see the wiring broken in the wires on the top part, thus you see the grey wiring inside.

When i charge my laptop recently, the charger would go on and off. Such as charging then not charging. I then took a look and the green light on the laptop charger is green then dims then green again over and over again. So the only way i can fix this issue is unplug the other part of the 2 charger, theres 2 parts then put it back together over and over again then connect it to my laptop. Many times it has same issue. However, few times i would get it to work and thus it would be charging.

However few times it would have same issue where problem arises again. But few times however if i make sure i dont move any part of the laptop charger cable... then it would always be charging which is good and thus working. So i figure it has to be my laptop charger as you see its broken the wiring part and its mainly at the top of the wiring near the place where you plug it into laptop.

Well i then read online that it might be the battery. So I then took out the battery and just connected my charger to my laptop without the battery. Obviously it shows no battery detected... however, the laptop doesn't have an issue with the power going out. Thus it shows green light all the time on the charger.

Does this mean i have to get a new battery as oppose to a charger? First thought was charger is bad since the broke... Read more

A:Laptop Doesn't Charge, Charger or Battery Problem?

The charger also provides AC power so doubtful that's the problem. It could be the battery or the charging circuit on the motherboard. Former is usually less than $100 to replace but the latter is much more.

Recently, I disconnected the AC power supply to be able to work elsewhere in the house.  When I reconnected the AC power supply and left the computer on the computer had gone into a hybernate mode.  It did awaken and I could continue until the task was finished.  Again I left the computer on.  When I returned the screen was dark and I assumed that it had reverted to the hybernate mode.  However it would not resume.  I checked the socket on the computer for the light which would indicate that power is being fed to the computer.  It was DARK.  Since the power supply is plugged into a power strip, I checked to make sure the strip was on.  The indicator light remained DARK.  I plugged to power supply into a known live outlet.  The indicator light remained DARK.  Using a volt meter, I found that the AC outlet was good and the output at the DC end of the power supply showed 19.88 volts DC.  At this point I assumed that the Power Jack Cable Harness had broken somehow. Searching the internet, HP support, and HP forum pages revealed no clear solution.  I left a message on "HP Support Forum Home>Notebooks>Hardware>Re: Charging Pin and Power Connector Broken"on 6-20-16 but have had no reply at this time except to offer a phone conversation. Since then, I needed to have access to the information on the hard drive.  Removing the hard drive meant that the top of the computer had to be removed. &nb... A:Sudden computer failure - won't charge but AC Charger output...

Well, assuming the AC adapter is good (which appears to be the case) then it is either the power jack harness or the motherboard itself. I am a bit confused how the light on the AC adapter brick stays dark when the output is testing OK. I assume you have removed the battery and tried to hold down the "on" button 30 seconds. There are lots of power-related daughterboards like the power button board and it is so hard to test them. Do you have the Manual: Service Manual

I recently bought a wireless 3G USB modem / hot spot. Although i use it primarily by plugging in my PC USB port, It just occurred to me that my smartphone charger also has a USB port. So i was wondering if i can use the modem by using the charger USB port or not. That way i will not have to keep my PC powered on all the time. My charger has a output rating of 5V and 830mA. I reckon there shouldn't be a problem but want to be sure lest i damage the modem.

So one day I reset my phone due to my phone slowing down, and it would not turn on.
For info purposes I have a Lumia 640 updated to win 10 (originally 8.1)
After this I put it on the charger, it would load the Microsoft logo. then go to the charging screen with plug icon.
This is odd due to being at 80℅ of battery before I rebooted. Often it'll sit there with no result, sometimes it'll reboot multiple times.
If I remove the charger the phone instantly turns off. This has been going on for 5 days. Yesterday when I plugged the phone in it went back to tiles, but when I removed the battery to put my sim back in the issue came back. It also showed 72℅ charged so can't be the battery, and I don't know how that happened.
Windows recovery tool can't see the device and when I choose the find option the fix won't get to the phone. When I plug my Lumia via USB it reboots over and over and disconnects over and over as my computer keeps making the USB sound. The only time this doesn't happen is if i hold volume up or down when I plug it, sometimes, and that just freezes it on the ms logo. When I continue from there the phone will reboot as the installation is loading.
The issue is clearly not the battery. As it's 70℅ or so, yet Iget the 0 charge icon and the phone won't turn on outside the charger.
I have no clue what the solution to this problem is.

My laptop all of a sudden today (after about half year of use) refuses to recognize my charger while my battery is plugged in. Here are the exact symptoms:
1. While battery is plugged in and charger connected, the battery will not charge. If I remove the power cable and plug it back in, it will charge for about 10 seconds before this reoccurs. The battery icon on the lower right of the screen shows as if the power cable is not plugged in. HOWEVER, the hardware cable icon light on the lower right side of my laptop is lit, indicating a connected cable
2. While battery is plugged in and charger connected, if I remove the battery, the computer will shut down(as if the charger is not connected)

I am certain that the charger works perfectly fine, I can run the computer without a battery just fine. I'm not entirely sure if this is a hardware or software issue.

I did not make any system change today or yesterday, nor allow any change that was popped up(the only pop up in the last two day was a jucheck.exe which I clicked no to). This just started happening a hour or so ago for no reason at all for as far as I know, I only noticed because the battery was looking low, thought the cable was insecure but checked it and it was fine. Then I messed around a bit with the cable and battery and found the above

My computer is a Toshiba satellite P755 S5320
My operating system is Windows 7 home premium version 6.1 build 7601 service pack 1

My laptop (Dell Inspiron 3520, Windows 8) is about a year and a half old now. Lately it has been having issues recognizing the charger when I plug it in. Sometimes it will show it's charging for a few seconds and then it stops. Often, when I restart or shut down and turn it back on, it will be fine and charge like normal. Other times, nothing is wrong and it charges exactly like it's supposed to. Right now, I've turned it off and on several times and it still won't charge. I don't know if it's the battery, the charger, or something wrong with my laptop.

edit: I left it on with the charger plugged in just in case, and now it seems to be charging intermittently; the light indicating it's charging will stay steady before it blinks and bit and goes back to being steady.

I've had this issue for some time it fixed itself long enough for the warranty to expire. The light on the adapter went out so I purchased a new one that kept it charging for several more months. Now it will not charge. It works without the battery in. I also recently replaced the DC power Jack thinking that could be the issue. However I still have the same problem so it must be something else. I am hoping you can help!

A:USB 3.0 ports do not recognize 2.0 stuff like pendrives, iphone charger

This is what I do when I suffer these types of problem, which is often by the way, and I have not found a correct way of fixing so it is temporarily at best.

I go to Device Manager, then to Universal Serial Bus Controllers and I start uninstalling the Generic USB Hubs and then the other hubs, hoping not to nuke my mouse, if I don't then I go to the Action Tab and click on Scan for Hardware changes and it will rearrange the usb drivers and IRQs in hopes that they do not clash with each other. If it does nuke the mouse then I manually restart the PC and hope that it will solve the issue once I am back at the desktop.

There is no damage done to the PC, at least I have not seen any real damage but until I find a better way, this is what I have to deal with.

My Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't recognize charger any more. And unfortunately my warranty expired 2 month ago.It was plugged in and working in the morning, but then in the afternoon I noticed that it was running on the battery only. It wont start without battery (just charger plugged in).
1. So here what I have done to debug. Me and my brother, we have purchased the same Dell laptops at the same time a year and a bit ago. This is why for a debugging purposes it was good.I took my charger and plugged in to his computer. And it works. Definitely not the charger issue I guess. And when I plug charger in to my computer, green light is still on the charger. And I have the original charger that came with the laptop.

3. Next thing I did was unplugged charger and removed the battery from the laptop. Then I pushed and hold "Power" button for 45 seconds to discharge a flea charge. Plugged charger back in but laptop wont start.
4. Next I started laptop on the battery, went to BIOS and checked if the charger is recognized in the BIOS. No, it doesn't recognize charger. So, if it is not a charger then what else can it be?

A:Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't work with charger. Charger is not recognized. Not charger problem.

Hi CJ777,
Thanks for reaching out with your query. You pretty much figured out all points of failure. Good job.
If the adapter is not detected in BIOS, it most likely is an issue with the mother board. In the BIOS set up, AC adapter should show up as 65w or 90w. If the adapter status is 'None' or 'Unknown Device Installed', it indicates that the mother board is not detecting the adapter for which the battery is not getting charged. Once the battery charge drains, I'm sure the adapter will not charge it again. Replacing the system board should resolve this issue.

Do you think I should open up the laptop and check the board for burnt components, or what?
Also, External battery chargers for laptops go for big $$$. So would it be possible to remove the cells and hook them to a external charger. (I have a slow charger made for RC Li-Ion batteries that I think would be perfect).

Thanks,

I attempted to contact HP is regard to the issue that I am experiencing, but cannot as my warranty expired on 6/22/16.  I'm hoping someone e here can provide insight.  When I turned my Stream on this afternoon, it wouldn't boot.  Odd, since it was fully charged last night, so I went ahead and plugged it in.  Upon doing so, I encountered a black screen stating my internal battery was nearly at capacity.  What precisely does that mean?  I am able to use the notebook as long as I keep it plugged in.  Also, while plugged in I receive a message stating that it's connected to a power source and the battery is not charging.  The moment I unplug it, it shuts down. I'm more than upset in regard to this new and unwanted development.  The notebook is only 15 months old.  Is there any way to salvage it or am I looking at buying a new one?  I've always used HP desktops, laptops, and notebooks; now I will never purchase one again. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I got this Toshiba Satellite 32PFL3312/10 - But now there is some problems

The battery indicator says that the the charger is plugged in, and IS charging. but it doesnt charge the battery.. no charge is taking place :-/ Its says there is "0" battery left. I have triede everything.. i toke the battery out, made sure there wasnt any dust etc.. i have tried holdning the power key down in 30 sec and a lot more. everytime i unplug the charger the system instantly swiched off.. I have tried to change the power plan from balanced to saver.

Then i tried to delete the Microsoft ACPI Compliant control method battery from the decive manager, and made it search for it again. This step made the battery start to charge for about 10-15 sec, and then it stopped again.

Now im kind of frustrated... So i thought that maybe it was an windows update problem, so i tried to update - but i got several updates "hanging" but now it wont update.. ! Comes with update errors. tried microsoft fix it, it didnt help.

Then i thought, okay... then i will try to restore to the factory condition, But nothing happens, i have tried all the guides from the Toshiba forums, pressing "0" - I did nothing... Then i tried pressing "F8" it didnt nothing... Then i tried the "F12" still nothing.

Im going nuts now... Hope someone in here can help me....

Hi Everyone, I'm sorry if a similar question has already been posted here, but I couldn't find it myself. I'm having really weird problems with my brand new Y580. It doesn't detect the charger, and because of this - won't charge. I managed to figure out how to temporarily fix the problem, but it keeps on happening. Long story short: What's wrong: (after applying a temporary fix and the laptop IS charging) when I unplug the charger and plug it back in again, the laptop doesn't detect it (it keeps on draining the battery and does't prompt that a charger is connected). The same happens when I close the lid and open it again - the charger magically disconnects itself. My temporary fix: I somehow managed to get the laptop working when connected to the charger after applying these steps: OS shut downbattery removedcharger unpluggedpressed power button once (just for a second)charger plugged to a different wall socketcharger plugged to the laptoppower button pressed once (laptop boots up)when the OS loads up, battery inserted again As I mentioned, this fixes my problem only temporarily as I can't close the lid or unplug the charger without repeating the same procedure. I'm pretty sure the same thing happens when I simply switch the laptop off from the OS level. I'm using Windows 8 now but the same thing happended when I was on Windows 7. Has anybody had a similar experience? I appreciate your help and advice. Piotr

A:Y580 doesn't charge and doesn't detect the charger

Hi again, I checked the charger again and it seems that it's not working when I unplug it a plug it back in. If I get the charger working and close/open the lid or restart the machine, it is still working fine. Any ideas why unplugging and re-plugging the charger makes it unavailable for the laptop? Piotr

Hi EightForum,

I really hope you can answer this simply request.

Nowadays is pretty common to have a new Ultrabook, laptop or notebook for general purposes. A very important feature is to have a healthy battery. We all know that Lithium-batts do a terrific job and are more resistant than never, but after many years of experience, I've learnt that having a software like "Eco charge, Battery care, Smart charge...etc " is a clever and vital feature already present in major brands BUT HP, believe or not. I've just received a new Ultrabook Spectra x360 with windows 8.1, and so far I cannot find any special battery function for this request, even worst nobody can answer in their forum either; I really can't understand this flaw in HP. So, I'd like to know is there any reliable battery software that can allow me to keep the battery charge to 80% and no more, even connected to AC power.

I've seen several that keep info about battery and how to optimize but none with the simple function that I need.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

A:How can I set maximum level of battery charge for notebook

I honestly don't think it is possible to change what is built into the hardware and ACPI that ships with the computer. Would take a program that can access and change the settings in ACPI and this most likely would have to come from the manufacturer.

Hello to all, I'm new to this forum.
Start of with a topic what was published many times before, only not the same as in my situation. The crazy thing is, at every startup from Windows the battery icon runs the charge bar 5 times, and than it stops. At pointer it says: 0% available ( on main supply, battery is being charged) However, this does never change. Nomatter how long it charges.
BatteryBar does the same thing:
Procent 0,0 %
Capacity 0mWh of 43.568 mWh
Battery unknown (charging)
Charge 0 mW
Full time 1:17
Main supply connected
battery waist 18,2% of 53.280 mWh

Does anybody have the patience to shine a light on this drained topic. I feel, mines is different.
Would be highly apreciated.
Thanks in advance

My company bought these notebooks for some of our products and we install Ubuntu 12.04LTS on them.  When we shut them down and try to charge them it doesn't work.   The light beside charging port is on (like it is charging), but cannot turn on computer after hours of "charging" because the batteries are drained.  It looks like it charges fine when the computers are turned on and charging, but not when we try to charge them without turning them on. We are wondering if this is some known issue and what would be correct procedure for charging these netbooks?

A:HP 210 G1 notebook with UBUNTU doesn't charge battery

Hey, Bit of a late answer, but I'll submit it in case anyone else has a similar issue. There is an issue with one of the BIOS version on the 210 G1, BIOS version F.03. If this is not updated to the most current version you'll find your batteries will drain quite quickly and will not charge properly. Also as your running Ubuntu, you may need to use the UEFI tool from HP to update the BIOS, here it's called the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics 3 in 1 USB Key: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/pc-diags.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/pps/pl_... Best of luck.

Notebook: HP Pavilion zv5434rs PC series, refurbished
Operating software: XP, ? pro or home
Problem: Can't connect to Internet via broadband
RJ45 Adapter: Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC #2

I have always gotten the message "Network cable not connected" when I've tried to connect this notebook to my existing DSL connection, even when using the network cable that is now connecting my PC to the net to post this message (so, the cable works). I contacted HP's online chat service yesterday about it and received some good help. Unfortunately, it didn't work. One of the things they gave me was an updated driver for the Realtek adapter (above). If that didn't work I was to reset the TCP/IP settings by typing "etsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" in the open field. Before getting offline to try these things, I confirmed with the tech that I was connecting the notebook correctly by inserting the RJ45 plug in the above adapter and the RJ11adapter into the phone jack. He said yes, and I should also check the cable and adapter, too. Well, neither the driver nor the reset worked; I knew the cable was okay but I got new RJ45 and RJ11 plugs. Those did not work, either. While poking around, though, I've noticed in Device Manager that the adapter properties are not picking up the new driver. I installed it correctly last night, and this morning went in and redid it all manually; it all went well, and I rebooted, and the device propert... Read more

A:Getting notebook RJ45 adapter to recognize driver/cable

Just a follow-up, in case anyone else has the problem. Finally did get through to HP, and they had me download an updated BIOS and then reinstall the drivers with the Application Recovery Disk. It did not help. HP kind of ran out of ideas, and I decided to use the OS disk to repair the Windows XP that came on the system. Unfortunately, this is a refurbished notebook, and I assumed the seller (Radio Shack) had cleaned it up first. Apparently not; it asked for the administrative password before it would repair the OS. Of course, I didn't have it. The folks at Radio Shack couldn't help me, either.

So I bought a new Dell notebook. :-(

But I suspect, if the problem was the BIOS, that the OS probably got corrupted and likely repairing it, or at worst, reinstalling it would have solved the problem. If that didn't work, I was going to upgrade to XP Professional.

My HP dv5000 Pavilion Notebook is failing to recognize the internal CD-ROM drive. This is a recent problem, the drive was working properly less than a week ago. The device manager shows no option for the drive as well as the system information in the HP help center has the drive listed as not being installed. I have go so far as checking the BIOS (Phoenix edition) for the drive but am unable to locate the option to check if the drive is enabled. I fully understand the risk and danger in entering the BIOS, hence why I am seeking advice from those who are more knowledgeable. I have tried calling the HP support center for assistance; needless to say they were of no help. The individual I spoke to had even less knowledge of computers than I do and even less of how to help solve my problem.

If there is anyone able to help I would greatly appreciate it, thank you.

A:My HP dv5000 Pavilion Notebook is failing to recognize the internal CD-ROM drive.

If Device Manager doesn't even show the drive there is a good chance that it has died. You can look in BIOS. In a Phoenix BIOS where you usually want to look is under Main. You should see your HD and maybe the CD drive. Settings should be on auto. If the CD drive isn't there it probably needs replacing. With a laptop you could take the drive out and put it back in to make sure you have a good connection.

Recently I bought a charger for my HP G61-110SA which was just a replacement adapter. Now yesterday it did something weird. Basically, there are two pictures of the two indicators there are to show whether it is charging, one is on the front and one is next to the port on the side. Basicaally the charger wasnt changing the indicator on the side or the one on screen but the one on the front was working when I turned it on. By default the laptop chages brightness when plgged in but now it sort of brightens a bit (not to the full level as should do) and then goes back to normal. Today the laptop is still doing the same but the front light now only turns on for a few seconds before turning off! I dont know whether it is charging. Is this the laptop or the charger. Any help would be useful, I have attatached the side indicator and the front one

UPDATE: I found a website which said you could turn it off and start without battery but with charger and then turn off and use both. However, I turned it off and removed the battery and it wouldnt charge. Then I put the battery in and it started charging-weird. Also the light on the front doesnt last very long so I am stuck. ANY HELP?

Hi,

I have a Equium A200-1V0 with what I can see is a common problem on many forums I find through google, but I cannot find any solutions for it.

1. The laptop will not boot (no bios screen) when the charger is plugged in.
2. It will boot up normally with out the charger connected. However, the battery, even if left to charge, will deplete once vista has fully started. When I then plug in the charger it freezes.

I am using a genuine charger. Any ideas? Do you think it is just the battery? Or is there something on the board causing this issue?

My 7537 is 20 months old and out of warranty.  I use it just a few times a year.  I recently pulled it out, charged it to 100% and started using it.  After a few minutes connected to WiFi, a Dell update notice popped up and I accepted the update and continued working.  I left it on overnight, and the next morning, the screen was black with a notice that the battery was low and would shut down, which it did.  I attempted to charge the battery, and it would not charge and the battery light would not illuminate. The battery charged a day earlier...but not today for some reason.
I tried every troubleshooting item I could google: different outlets, blew canned air into the charger port, removed the battery, held down the power button for 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 3 minutes.  I removed the memory, removed the Hard Drive, removed the CMOS battery (and drained residual power), and attempted to restart with various items removed, and then also re-seated.  Nothing.
If I try to start with the battery connected, the keyboard lights up and the fans run for about 3 seconds...then they just stop. The screen stay black.  If I try to start without the battery but with power supply connected, absolutely nothing happens.  Nothing runs, nothing beeps...nothing.
I purchased another power supply thinking that was the obvious problem... but that did not help.  At this point, I believe the issue is either with the Motherboard or the charger port,... Read more

hi there. I have the same problem! My laptop (model 13-4007na Spectre x360 i7 with 512 ssd ) was 1 month out of warrantee (it's now 2 months but I'm struggling to get hold of HP on the phone!) and one day when I plugged in the power cord to charge it, it would not charge. It had been running hot since I bought it and I had intermittently got an error message about a fan not operating properly, but when I closed the laptop down and restarted, the fan error disappeared. So, in August this year (warrantee ran out in July), I plugged in my laptop to charge it and the charging light did not come on. The battery went flat and I could not charge with the powercord. No lights on the charging outlet either.  Just a few weeks prior to this, the screen had been going black on me if I moved it slightly. My husband opened the laptop and disconnected the batteries and charged the batteries separately. He put the fully charged batteries back into the laptop and I was then able to turn the laptop on but only if the power cable was connected (despite it not appearing to do anything) and only if the laptop was in tablet mode. The laptop worked for all intents and purposes and I was able to make a backup of my data so that I could send it in for repair. My husband also noticed that there appears to be a burnt out component on the motherboard. I have since tried to turn on the laptop again (batteries are fully charged) but it will not even turn on. As an aside, my charging cable h... Read more

Last week my Spectre x360's battery was running low and it prompted me to plug it in to charge. I plugged in and the laptop was not charging. I tested the outlet and inspected the charger/port to see if there is damage.  Everything is in perfect condition, neither the laptop nor the charger have been dropped nor damaged. Called HP support and the laptop is one month out of warranty... Ordered another charger and the laptop still does not charge.  The LED next to the power button used to blink 3 times and the laptop would not boot up. Now the LED does not blink at all. Reading x360 support messages it looks like others have had the same issue and it has been a failed motherboard. Is this a known issue is there anything else I can do? Very dissapointed in this whole situation considering what I spent on the laptop and the timing of this issue.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop - the original Dell AC Power Adapter crapped out and was replaced with a universal Targus adapter. This powered the laptop well for approximately two weeks, however the laptop stopped working overnight and now refuses to boot.

When I plug in the adapter, no lights appear. The laptop does not respond in any way when I push the power button, it doesn't matter if it's plugged in, not plugged in, battery in, battery out. The charging port on the machine does not appear to be loose. The adapter comes with a handful of different tips, and was tested on my Acer Aspire and is in good working order.

I've read that this model laptop (or maybe just Dells in general) has issues with universal/aftermarket chargers, but in those cases the laptop will generally still run off AC power even if the batteries won't charge. I read somewhere else that these symptoms point to a fault with the internal power supply board, but I don't even know what that is or what it looks like.

If anyone has any information on this problem, or on troubleshooting and repairing a PSB fault (if that even matches my symptoms) it's very greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

A:Re: Spectre x360 won't charge or boot with cord

To All,If you are having this problem, chances are, the problem is the power connector broke inside the laptop. The power connector is poorly designed.  It's only being held by 1 screw on one side to hold it.  As such, when you insert the power plug in and out, the whole unit moves until it breaks the wires. Here's the part you'll need.  P/N: 801513-001You can get one from eBay.HP needs to fire the designer of this laptop.  It's so sad to see a $1,300 laptop inoperable because of poor design.  How much does it cost HP to fix these under warranty?  How much is the cost to the consumers if out of warranty?  Goodwill cost?  HP's reputation for having poor quality laptops?  A LOT!  It could have been designed much better without additional cost.

Here's a weird little quirk I've noticed, if the light doesn't come on when your first plug it directly into the wall, try flipping the charger over and plugging it back into the wall.... some of my house plugs work with it "upside down" and some of them work plugged in normally but it's an odd issue.I used to have no issues at all to just plug it in anyhow and anywhere, but now it's real finicky. Mines only 3 months old or so.

Hi,

My computer is a Dell inspiron 14R (2011). It crashed yesterday and now it refuses to boot up. Thinking it might be the battery problem, I tried charging it. I know my charger is working because of the charging light but when I plug it in, the light turns off so I'm assuming the computer doesn't want to charge. Does this mean my processor or something has shortcircuited?

A:Computer crashed refuses to boot or charge

Try:
- Unplug the charger and run on battery alone
- Then remove battery and run on charger alone

- Remove both charger and battery, press power button for 30 seconds, then plug them back in and try booting

I have a HP notebook(XP Home) that stop booting windows a while back after it crashed during an SP2 install. It does not boot from any mode in the advanced menu(safe, command, last known good config, etc.). I can't boot from my Knoppix disk because it says that there is a checksum error, even though I can boot from the same Knoppix disk on my desktop fine. Mind you this laptop has only a CDRW/DVDROM combo drive, no floppy or zip. I finally found my XP setup cd recently and tried to boot from it to perform a repair or access the recovery console, if it's possible. The problem is it won't even boot from that. It gives me the "NTLDR missing, press ctrl+alt+delete to restart" message when I boot from the Win Xp setup cd. I have read about some of the solutions involving a floppy boot disk, but I only have a cdrw/dvdrom combo drive to work with. Anybody have any ideas how to resolve this so I can boot the setup disk and run a repair?

A:HP Notebook/XP/Will not boot in any mode/tried to to boot from XP disk=NTLDR missing

Make sure your boot sequence in the BIOS is set to boot from the cdrw/dvdrom drive first. Place in your disc and reboot.
Normally tapping the Delete key at boot will take you into the BIOS

Hello fellow techies,
I have a situation with my Compaq Evo N600c battery or something in that directions, so I need possible solutions. My laptop needs to be plugged in at all times, which makes it frustrating because its a portable laptop. If it becomes unplugged the laptop will turn off within 10 seconds flat. I fear that this will, if it hasnt already done so, mess up my electric circuits among other components. Can any of you suggest or recommend options I can use to diagnose the situation. I would like to find out what the problem is, whether I should buy a new battery or some component or prong that I need to replace? Thanks for the feed back!

Linda

A:Battery will not charge or hold charge?!?!

Yup, sounds like a battery problem.

First, make sure the battery has a charge. Most laptop batteries have a button on them somewhere you can push that will give you the power level. Alternativly, there should be a utility in windows or the BIOS that will allow you to check the power level.

If the battery has no charge and isn't charging, then replace it with a known good one and see if it will charge up when the laptop is plugged in.

If the good battery won't charge up, then there is a problem with your motherboard.

If the battery has charge but won't power the system, then there is a problem with your motherboard too.

If this is the case, then the best you can do is contact the laptop manufacturer and get them to replace the motherboard.

Hello, I've got a hp probook 4530s. A few days ago my laptop didn't charge my battery anymore. So I tested the laptop without a battery and only with my AC adapter and it worked just fine. So I did order a new battery but still it won't charge at all. I'm sure my AC adapter works fine because without a battery it works. So my question does any one have an idea what to do next?

Hey guys, I was just browsing the internet last night, and the computer froze on me. I hard-killed it, and tried to turn it on normally. It didn't work, and once I rebooted again, it led me to "start windows normally" and "start up repair tool". It didn't recognize my OS, and I didn't know what devices to load, so I clicked next. It led me to the advanced system recovery options (startup repair, system restore, system image recovery, windows memory diagnostic, and command prompt). I've tried every single one of them, and none of them work except for command prompt.
I started looking up what to do when you're at the command prompt, but I have no partitions, and when I tried to create one, it said it couldn't because of an I/O device error.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you.

I purchased a new HD in March and after copying the files from my old HD, I have been using the new one as the primary and the old one as the secondary. No problems. THe other day, I was updating windows and the computer was turned off. THe next time I go to use the computer, it freezes at the startup logo. I restart it, it freezes at the desktop. Then, I restart it, and it says something along the lines of "OS can't load" or "Trouble loading OS." I've been tinkering with recovery disks, but its now only recognizing my secondary HD, and it has it listed as C: (it had previously been D. Did my HD fry? I have no idea what's wrong.

Thanks in advance,

Yesterday my PC turned off by itself and rebooted, it gets to the XP loading screen then goes black and reboots. It will load in Safe mode, but not safe mode with networking. It once went got to my regular desktop (not in safe-mode) for about a minute, it had a box with some mumbo-jumbo about a critical error being fixed, would I like to report it to microsoft. I pressed Yes and it went black again. I have also restored to a week ago via safe mode and that has not helped.

I also have a yellow ! in the hardware manager by my CD rom drive, I followed the instructions to uninstall and add again but it gave an error saying something (the driver?) was not right and it may not function correctly. Still has the ! and is not shown in the my computer screen.

I have booted directly from my XP cd, it runs for a few minutes loading things then goes to a blue screen "to protect my computer". I did not see any way to interact with it, stop it, or do any of the repair stuff (that help said I could do if I had my disk!)

I think my roommate might have an external or spare CD drive, but I've got a funny feeling that won't work either.

So I guess I've got a 2 part question...

What happened in the first place? (just one of those things? Virus? ???)

If I hook up another CD drive and it can't find good drivers, or won't work for whatever reason, what do I do then?

Thanks for any suggestions/help.

I'm trying to rebuild a windows XP machine for a neighbor. Something within the OS became corrupted and wouldn't boot, and wouldn't recognize the boot device. I get the message...

"Reboot and select proper boot device or put media in the boot device and press any key"

I thought I would try removing the HD and reformating it in another PC and now I'm trying to rebuild XP. I've tried booting from both the DVD and CD drives, tried every different boot BIOS priority setting I could, tried reading an XP pro CD, ubuntu and opensuse Linux CDs, and even a bootable Ultimate Boot CD that I just created. All of the above work fine (are recognized) in another machine.

When I try to boot from directly from the HD, I get "NTLDR is missing" - which may be normal since it is a newly formatted HD.

I'm at a complete loss and don't know what else to try. Could it still be the hard drive?

Any help or ideas is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Jerry

In the process of trying to create a dual booting system, all I have managed to do is create one big mess. I cannot boot up my machine. The only way I can boot up is by using Paragon Recovery Media. I put in the Paragon disk and it ask me what I want it do? I select find OS'es on my computer. In another window it shows Win 7. I click on that and my machine boots right up. This is the only way to boot my computer. I have tried re-installing the OS. I can't do a 'clean' install because my machine won't boot up. I have tried everything I know, I am totally stumped. I ran CHKDSK, no problems there. Can someone please help me?

Im running Windows 8.1 and yesterday my PC decided to stop initializing any USB devices I plug in after the system is booted. If the device is plugged in prior to the system booting it is recognized fine (unless i unplug it and plug it back in, then it wont initialize). My BIOS always shows my connected USB devices on all ports so I doubt its a mobo issue. Has anyone else had this issue, and if so is there a fix? Id rather not re-install my OS (again).

I am using a home built computer with dual boot Windows 98 and XP Pro. With 98 the computer recognizes the keyboard on boot.
With XP the keyboard is not recognized on boot up. I go to system then hardware and uninstall the keyboard then tell the computer to search for new hardware. It finds the keyboard and it works. Microsoft PS/2 Intellitype Pro keyboard, I have tried two others with XP with the same result.
I have manually installed the software, gone to Microsoft for keyboard updates and XP updates. No success. I also noted a couple of other people with similar keyboard problems with XP but nothing suggested helps. Any other ideas?

I need help to solve a big trouble. My "back-up" PC (P4 1.6, Asus P4SDX, 01 HD ATA-133 120 GB Maxtor & 01 HD ATA-100 40 GB Seagate) is having a boot problem since this morning... The message is "DISK BOOT FAILURE-INSERT DISK SYSTEM...".

So, I put my MoBo CD in my drive of DVD and I could access DOS (only drive "A" - the program "called" my drive of DVD - normally named D by Windows - as drive "A")), but I can not reach my 02 hard drives (as if they were "missing"...). Inside BIOS, within BOOT menu, I can not set Primary Master and Slave, because they "disappeared" (appears only NONE inside this option... - as if I do not had any HDD...) Very strange, as I didn't change any setting of my PC.

Well, I need a technical help to solve this odd problem; what can I do to make my PC to recognize my 02 HD's, please??

Thanks a lot in advance for any help!!!!

When trying to boot up using the CD-ROM, I get a gray screen saying that the device in the system modular bay cannot be identified, isn't plugged in, etc. When I get out of that screen, I get NTLDR is missing, press Ctrl Alt Del to restart. The same message comes up when trying to boot from the hard disk. Tried an XP boot disk, no dice. Any ideas are appreciated.

A:[SOLVED] Computer Won't Boot Up or Recognize CD ROM

Hi Brandon, Welcome to TSF!

Try this workaround....

Enter the BIOS (continually tap the Delete Key at start up), and change the Boot Sequence to ?

1: CD/DVD

2: HDD (or IDE0)

3: Floppy Disc or Other bootable device.

Insert the Windows? XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM Drive; Save and Exit the BIOS; restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive when prompted.

At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press R to start the Recovery Console.

(If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.)

When you are prompted, type the Administrator password...If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.

Enter in the following commands: (presuming that E: is the CD/DVD Drive.) Press Enter after each command.

COPY E:i386NTLDR C:

COPY E:i386NTDETECT.COM C:

(Please note the spaces in the command lines)

You now need to create a ?boot.ini? file, so type bootcfg /rebuild, and then press ENTER.

When the Windows installation is located, the following instructions are displayed:

Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All)
[Type Y in response to this message.]

Enter Load Identifier:
[This is the name of the operating system. Type Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition.]
Enter OS Load options:
[Leave this field blank, and then press ENTER].

Take out the CD ROM and type exit... Read more

Hi,

I setup my pc with 2 harddisk. I dual boot xp 32-bit and windows 7 64-bit on 1 harddisk and other harddisk is for my data storage for xp and 7. The problem is that windows 7 recognize the 2 harddisk and I can access the data but xp won't. Xp can see the harddisk on 'my computer' but it was listed RAW.

Anyone know how to fix it so that xp and 7 can access the 2nd harddisk?

Thanks!

A:Dual boot: xp won't recognize 2nd harddisk.

Look in XP Disk Managemnet to see if the missing partition is assigned a letter. If not, give it one.

Otherwise, please post back a screenshot of your full Disk management map.

Good day everyone! So a few days ago my desktop computer started restarting for no reason (no bsod or any other errors). Then I stopped the computer so it can "rest" over the night. At the morning, when I tried to start it, it wouldn't start. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7-vd73d2XQ&feature=youtu.be This is what was happening. Then, after cleaning up the whole computer case, every little fan and making sure that everything is in place (the cables in my computer case are really messed up though), the computer started. But the monitor didn't. It just didn't recognize the computer. So I left it like that for some time. Then I noticed that there is a second VGA slot in the back of the PC and plugged the monitor cable there. It worked, but I guess it was an onboard card or something. In Preferences it was recognized as "Default Monitor". So I couldn't play any game and the resolution was bad. [Could only watch movies and browsing.
