I turned off my notebook using the mouse and the screen menu. The computer apparently closed down as it should, the screen went black, but the light on the power switch continues to glow. When I try to turn on the computer again, the power switch has become unresponsive. Now I can't turn my computer on. (I don't actually know whether the computer is turned on or off because the screen is black). The notebook has a fixed battery, so I can't do a hard reset by removing it. What should I do?More replies
My HP Stream Notebook PC 11 11-d010na won't power up, AC led is white and pulses brighter white three times and this repeats. Power switch lights up but nothing else happens. Battery was about 75% when shut down last evening. Purchased March 2015.

Purchased the HP STREAM notebook at Walmart, charged the battery and turned it on and everything was fine. Then I go to turn it on today and it won't power on. Nothing lights up or makes sound. The charger port lights up showing fully charged and that's it, no screen or key lights. Tried holding the power button down, tried pushing escape, tried plugging and unplugging. The charger is the one that came with it and charges fine the laptop itself just wont power on. Anything I can do at home so I don't have to take it to get it fixed? Low on money.More replies
I'm experiencing same problem only that the network light keeps blinking
Hey @Ikupeleye1, I seen that you had posted on a previous thread and thought I would move your post to your own thread for more exposure. I wanted to make sure that I replied to you and offered my help! I understand that your Notebook is not coming on but you see that the Network light keeps blinking. Could you please provide me with your Model Number (How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?) and Which Windows Operating Systems you are running. When we have come to a resolution, please share what worked for you with others by marking that post as an Accepted Solution. Note: please make sure that the AC adapter cable is not plugged into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source. It should be directly into a wall outlet. Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues. Here is a document I found called Computer Does Not Start (Windows 10). Please follow each and every troubleshooting step in this document to help narrow down where the issue may be coming from. Have you tried performing a hard reset? Can you boot into Safe Mode? Do you hear the fan running when you turn on the Notebook? If so, please take a look at the Computer Starts but Screen Remains Blank document. Hi @suggs66,Thank you for visiting the HP Forums!I have looked into your issue about your HP Stream Notebook and it having startup issues after an update was done. Try performing a hard reset. You could try a system restore. System restore will help if something automatically updated and did not go well on the Notebook. When performing a System restore please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices as they can cause issues. Please get back to me how this goes. My sister is running Windows XP Home. She likes to watch the eagles at Norfolk (www.wvec.com). She has a total of about 10 different nature streams that she watches and all of the others, including one from this same site, work fine. But this one (her favorite, of course), appears to be frozen at a frame from last Friday (3/30, date/time stamp at bottom of frame). I'm stumped on how this one can malfunction while all her others work. This one works for all her friends and for me, as well, so it's not the site. We've tried clearing temp internet files and cookies. Ideas?
Try a Scandisk and Defrag on her system AFTER deleting the temporary files as has been previously done. It seems likely there is a "corrupted" image file trapped within Internet Explorer or whatever program is used to view the streaming video.
Also, when she goes to the website she can try the <Shift> key + <Reload> button in the browser to "force" the reloading of page content regardless of previously cached site / page data.
Let us know if this resolves the issue.

I bought a HP Stream Notebook PC13 with Windows 10 already installed. I only use this computer to surf the web, but it does have an active trial version of Microsoft Office. There are no additional programs, photos, videos, etc. downloaded to the computer beyond the original bundle. The notebook has a 28GB hard drive and 3.58 GB are free. I cannot run the Windows 10 update with so little free space on the hard drive. I have a number of files that I think I can delete (Evernote and McAfee), but still not enough to download the Windows 10 update. What's the easiest way of identifying trash to delete? Finally, any idea why HP built this notebook in a manner that updates are cumbersome/problematic?More replies

I want to know what kind of micro sd card is better to use for an HP Stream 13 4G? And what kind of stuff can I put on the micro sd card? My memory is almost all full because of the updates, could I put some of the stuff in the sd card?
Hi Lori, I use SanDisc Memory card for both my Laptop and Camera.. Its really good.. Compact And excellent performance.. I would suggest u to by a 64GB or 128GB Memory card for storage.. But 128gb sd cards are more than 2 or 3 times expensive than the 64gb memory cards.. 64gb would cost u around $30 but 128gb would be costing around $70 or more.. So, wat i would suggest is to buy an 1TB External Hard drive which would cost u around $50... Western Digital and Seagate are good.. I prefer WD and i own one..So u can do like this - keep a budget of $80 and purchase a 1TB WD Ext HDD and a 64 GB micro SD card.. (Product pricing may vary).. But remember this - Internal Hard disc or the External HDD, both a very delicate.. Should be handled with atmost care.. You Drop down your HDD once, thats it, its gone.. Dead.. But Memory cards are strong, can handle Drops, bumps and pressures.. And yes, i both HDD and mmc, u can store Media files (Pics, Movies and Songs), Software files (exe files only), games and other documents.. But u can not "install" Softwares or games into mmc ot ext HDD, there r chances that it wont work.. Also mmc are Compact but Ext HDD are not.. So upto u to decide.. I attempted to contact HP is regard to the issue that I am experiencing, but cannot as my warranty expired on 6/22/16. I'm hoping someone e here can provide insight. When I turned my Stream on this afternoon, it wouldn't boot. Odd, since it was fully charged last night, so I went ahead and plugged it in. Upon doing so, I encountered a black screen stating my internal battery was nearly at capacity. What precisely does that mean? I am able to use the notebook as long as I keep it plugged in. Also, while plugged in I receive a message stating that it's connected to a power source and the battery is not charging. The moment I unplug it, it shuts down. I'm more than upset in regard to this new and unwanted development. The notebook is only 15 months old. Is there any way to salvage it or am I looking at buying a new one? I've always used HP desktops, laptops, and notebooks; now I will never purchase one again. Has anyone else experienced this issue?
When you hover the mouse cursor to the battery icon? What does it say? Plug in not charging? If yes then follow the steps herehttp://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/windows-10-update-prevents-batt... Cheers!

My laptop turns on and shows the logo for a few seconds then the screen goes blank. Ive carried out system fast tests with both extensive test and quick test and all categories passed. Please help. Thanks.
Do any lights stay on when the screen goes blank or does everything go dark? It sounds like the screen stays on when you are in the BIOS since you were able to run the diagnostics. You might try restoring Windows back if that is what is not working using the F11 system recovery option.2 more replies

If holding the power button down for 10 seconds does not power it off, leave the power supply disconnected until the battery fully discharges. Reconnect it and attempt to boot it, this has worked for some posters here for the Stream notebooks.2 more replies
I was trying to fix an HP Stream Notebook 13's (HP Stream Notebook - 13-c002tu) small HD size problem. The HD was showing a total size of 29 GB. I don't know if it was originally sold with this size of an HD - I find it highly unlikely. I tried to reset it using the HP reset via UEFI. I saw HP partitioning the drive so I assumed it would be fixed. After resetting, windows showed HD size was still the same. I took a look at the disk with Windows Disk Management, and there wasn't really any unpartitioned space. What should I do?
Hi, HP Stream is made specifically for browsing purposes only. The agent that sold you the laptop should have educated you about HP Stream Notebooks properly. As the name itself. It was made for surfing purposes only. So theres no need to FIX the computer. What you need is an upgrade. If you want to store more files or docs then get an sd card. It is listed in the overview of the computer specification Store it in the cloudGet 1 TB or 100 GB of OneDrive storage for 1 year, included with Office 365, to easily store, share and enjoy your photos, videos, and documents.2 http://www8.hp.com/ca/en/products/laptops/product-detail.html?oid=8929217#!tab=featuresCheers!4 more replies

On the left side is a card slot. You put one of these in the card slot. An SD card you can buy at any office or camera store. To insert a card: Hold the card label-side up, with connectors facing the slot, insert the card into the slot, and then push in on the card until it is firmly seated. To remove a card: Press in on the card it until it pops out Once the card is in the slot it will show up as a device and you need to give it a drive letter, generally D: After that, you can move all the files in your libraries (documents, pictures, etc) and your downloads folder to the SD card. This tells how generally: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-increase-storage-space-on-windows-8-1-devices-with-sd-cards/ This says Windows 8 but the process is similar in Windows 10. By default they want to install in C:\program files. Put a program files folder on the SD card and then you can direct program installs to the SD card where you are given the option. You might even uninstall some of the ones you already have and reinstall them on SD card. Post back if you need more help. If this is "th... Read more1 more replies

I serve on the board of a local non-profit, and our Deputy Director has been 'sans computer' for a while.
Turns out that she had a Win7 laptop that was riddled with viruses/spyware/adware/malware.
I used Adware Cleaner, Avast Free Antivirus, ccleaner, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and iobituninstaller, and was able to get a lot of the junk off of there, but the final verdict was:
Still can't check for Windows Updates
Still can't update Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE)
Most update installs are still failing
I was going to do a Windows upgrade, but she pre-empted me by buying an 11? HP Stream Notebook (11-r014wm) running Windows 10.
She then asked me to do 'preventive maintenance' on it, so I installed:
Avast Free Antivirus
That's been more or less the standard protocol for me since approx. Win2k or WinXP, but I guess I should have done my homework first...
When I went to Window > Settings > Update & Security, I noticed that my Windows Defender was turned off (everything grayscaled). When I scrolled all the way to the bottom of that section, I noticed there is a hyperlink to 'Open Windows Defender'. I clicked on that (intending to maybe turn it on manually), and then I got a pop-up that said:
This app has been turned off and isn't monitoring your computer.
If you're using another app to check for malicious or unwanted ... Read more
I had the same problem when I moved over to Win 10. I ended up installing AVG anti virus which is ok but I did prefer MSE.
Look forward to the real solution.
A few weeks ago I started to download DVDShrink from what looked like a perfectly legitimate company site. After I clicked to download the program it began to install itself. At the same time all kinds of alarms went off - Comodo, Malwarebytes, etc. - and I quickly shut down.
After booting up I ran a quick Mbam scan and it found 32 infected files which I deleted. I then ran a full Mbam scan and it found a bunch more. Later I also ran full Mbam and Avast scans but this time around neither came up with anything. I also used ERUNT to replace the Registry with a clean copy made earlier.
For a few days everything ran OK but then Firefox began to freeze up whenever I brought up a page with a Youtube video on it. Then other things started to freeze - Task Manager, etc. - and now it's reached the stage that the computer won't boot up properly at all. Almost everything is frozen. The computer won't even start in Safe Mode. At best it just brings up my mouse pointer (which is working) and my desktop wallpaper but nothing more.

I am not sure if accidentally deleted major files or what, but now my computer will not load past the HP logo screen! It did shut down during the middle of the update and I haven't been able to fix it since. This is one with a sealed battery so it will not allow me to take the battery out. I have tried a manual restart and that does not help .The computer turns on and off. It gets to the hp stays there for a minute then turns off and restarts to the logo screen. I have ran the diagonostic test and eveyrthing came back passed. I can also get to the blue screen by pressing f10 and have the advanced options. When I try to reset it to factory it goes to 37% and then says there was a problem with this reset. I have also tried to do the comand prompt and when i click on it i am prompted to selecet a user ( and it has my account) I click my account name and it brings me to a black box saying "Adminstration" when I hit enter it just then says another line of "adminstration". I have also tried running the self repair and it says this can not be repaired. Do I have any options?!?! I am not sure what to do I have only had this computer about 2 weeks.
Hi, You can still do a hard reset even with a sealed battey. Just unplug the AC adaptor then press and hold the power button for 15 secs then plug the charger back again. Cheers!

Hi, I have the above notebook which was brought for me back in January 2015, after having to do a factory reset my laptop turned off half way through and now all you can do is turn it on and it has a black streen with the HP symbol coming up every couple of seconds and thats as far as you can go. i have tried to update the BIOS which its says is already up to date and have done a system checked which all came back fine. have also down loaded the recovery program on to a USB stick but the laptop doesn't do anything and i was wondering if anyone could help as i am ready to bin this laptop even though its hardly been used. Many thanks in advance!
Some options: Press the F11 key when powering up to attempt running the recovery utility.Order the recovery media from HP and boot from that. I am not sure what recovery program you downloaded, I do not believe the recovery media from HP is available for download? You could also try a fresh install of Windows 10, instructions are here.2 more replies

My PC is slowing down. I noticed after trying to do video chats several times and the PC slows down and freezes after that. After running a diagnostics, I noticed one of the reasons is my RAM. I have 2 GB and only 1.89 is usable. I need to upgrade. I want to try something like 16 GB if it would let me. Would I be able to upgrade that high? I read on the specs from another site and it said the maximum RAM for windows 8.1 (64 bit) is 1 or 2 TB. If I could do it, how would I go about it?More replies

At the office I use an external mouse on my computer.
At the end of the day I (usually) unplug the mouse before going into standby mode.
When I forget to disconnect mouse before going into standby mode...when I get home and resume my touchpad ends up being frozen and won't work.(Note: Built-in notebook keyboard does work however).
When this happens the only way I know how to correct the problem is to restart the computer.
Is there some magic or alternative way to unfreeze my mouse without having to restart the computer?
Ctrl \ Alt \ Delete. Click Processes and see if the mouse app is still running. If it is, right click on it and end processes.

Hi, you might pressing the Esc key while powering up to enter the BIOS setup menu to see if the trackpad functions correctly in there. If not, it may be defective. There might be a component test in the BIOS F2 diagnostic menu also. If it works okay in the BIOS but not in Windows, you could try reinstalling both the Intel chipset driver pack and the touchpad driver. Just download the files from HP and run them instead of trying to update the current driver that is there.1 more replies
Extremely frustrated I've looked and tried to find a solution to no avail. When the notebook boots up, it gets to the login screen, I wouldn't be able to do anything at that point but I can log in because I have a fingerprint scanner, from there I'm 100% dead in the water. The only way to shut down is to hold down the power button. While the computer is in bootup, I have touchpad/keyboard function, I can escape to boot options, BIOS, repair, etc. and have normal functionality while there but not in safe mode. I have ran SFC with commands several times, chkdsk with commands several times, nothing changes. SFC says it found problems but was not able to fix all of them and the last chkdsk found nothing wrong.
Here are the events leading up to:
* had disk errors and bad sectors in old hard drive (could not repair)
* cloned old hard drive to new hard drive (there were errors but the new hard drive booted and worked for the most part correctly)
* in the process of trying to fix missing setup files for applications and other miscellaneous small issues, I ran troubleshooting, updates, chkdsk, sfc, etc. removed various applications, and added a few, nothing worked. I installed Revo uninstaller to remove Kaspersky Internet Security as it is THE MOST stubborn application to remove I've ever experienced. The reason I mention that is because I went through my computer trying to find the leftover files even after Revo because Kaspersky was still running after re-installing it and uninsta... Read more
If you have (and should have) a USB keyboard and mouse connect them and see if they will work.
Since your file system was already corrupted you cloned the bad files to the new drive.
If the USB devices work you should do a Repair Install.
If that doesn't work do this: Using System Recovery, Factory Reset and Minimized Image Recovery Options HP Pavilion dv6-3225dx Entertainment Notebook PC | HP? Support
From this tut:
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
On newer models HP Recovery may offer a Minimized OS Recovery option when booting from F11, which retains only the OS, Recovery Manager, HP Support Asst, and HP Wireless LAN. This is as close to a clean reinstall as you can get without doing one yourself.
● If you clean reinstall only to C and leave all other partitions intact, F11 Recovery key should still work later if you need it.
● You can also Extract HP 3rd Party Software from RecovCD.
● Problems with volume control lighting and HP Quick Launch buttons have been dealt with here where you can also get further support.
helllppppppp!!!! i pressed f8 tried debuggin and every other option debugging stays on blank screen how long should i wait
I'm not sure, but i imagine your Windows is corrupted.
You should format your drive and reinstall windows.
If you don't want to lose your data, download Ubuntu and boot your computer with it. You can then retrieve your important data before you format the drive.

Got a user who has a Acer 5100-3583 notebook, the keyboard and touchpad are unresponsive after multiple reboots and standard trouble shooting yield no results.? The unit is only 14 months old and out of warranty.
It will read from DVD-ROM drive as it reads a DVD movie when inserted.
No USB devices such as keyboard and mouse work either.
- in windows, press Fn+F7 (or the combination you have to activate/deactivate touchpad
- In the bios (press F2 when it appears the ACER screen when booting), be sure that the Tpad is enabled.
Purchase a usb mouse and keyboard and by pass the problem.
Restore to an earlier date to make sure the configuration wasn't dumped somewhere along the line.
Reformat the system.
Check with Acer Site under troubleshooting to see if there are any other solutions.
Last resort and if your capable open casing to check for loose connections. ( It does appear Acer has problems with touchpads frequently)
Luck to you and this is about all the thoughts I came up with right now. Let us know...Jazz
My wife has a two-year-old Samsung notebook. Recently when she unplugged it the machine cut off, even though the battery said 79% charged (it wouldn't charge any further). I figured that the battery was bad so I bought another one from Amazon.
This one charges to 100% percent and does exactly the same thing. I'm perplexed but think there's something going on with the motherboard that won't let it use battery juice, even if Windows 8.1 says it's 100% charged.
I've tried the hold the power button down for 1 min with the battery out trick to no avail.
Any ideas? I'm stumped and think I might need to get her another notebook.

Last night my computer blue screened about 3 times then it just stopped turning on altogether. Wheni plug the power supply into the motherboard the neon fan turns on for a milisecond but that seems to be the only way that i can tell that there's power going to the motherboard.
I've tried 4 different power supplies, different processor, different BIOS batteries, different RAM, etc, but no matter how many times i try to turn it on it just wont turn on.
I do recall doing something innthe BIOS last night which seemed to start this dilemer. I went into power management and did something to the power switch option, then set everything back to default settings.
This is when things started to happen then my pc just wouldn't turn on at all.
It's a socket939 MSI CoreCell.
Could something i did in the BIOS really be causing this problem and is there a way to fix it?
Like i said there does seem to be power going to the motherboard but it simply wont turn on (i even tried different power switches just in case..@
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just don't want to buy another 939 motherboard as most shops don't cell them any more and it means i'd have to buy a new processor too.
If it is a BIOS setting, removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes should clear it. Since you've already changed the battery more than once, it would seem that is not the problem. Considering what you already tried, it might be the motherboard itself or possibly the graphics card but my money is on the motherboard. Just to be sure do you have another graphics card to test with?
I have an emachines w3052 and i had to replace the motherboard in it and i didn't pay close enough enough attention to were i pulled the led and power switch wires from if anyone knows what i can do to fix please help. Also the motherboard is a fic-k7mnf-64 i looked at the manual no help i also looked beside the 10pin connector were they go and it doesnt give a description so if you know please tell me lol
Emachine with XP Home - was running fine, but in the middle of copying a file got an error "Windows has encountered an error and will shut down."
The machine then refused to boot.
When I plug in the power cable, the PS boots without use of the power switch. No POST, no display, no error beeps. Power seems to be getting to the mobo and hard drive (LED activity), but nothing more.
What on earth could cause this? Where should I start troubleshooting?
Any help would be handsomely rewarded! :giddy:
u unplugged the power and still nothing ? u could try clearing the cmos , if u cannot locate the jumper unplug the Power cord , open the side case up and then locate a watch battery remove it count to 30 and then replace the battery and then rehook power and see if it works that way .
I've got a computer that's turned off. I press the power switch, and nothing happens. Now, I unplug the network cable and the computer turns on.
Why does having a network cable connected prevent the computer's power switch from functioning? And why does unplugging the network cable cause it to power up?
The computer has worked fine for a year, but was recently moved to the other side of the room, and a new switch replaced the old network hub at the same time.
I swapped network cables and the problem still persists.
my acer powered down by itself like the power had run out but it hadnt....so i had to force shutdown...since then it wont switch back on the connection light just flashes twice slowly instead of several times like normal and the screen remains black... i have tried all the remove battery and ac tricks and nothing is working ,,,,any ideas ?????????
Have you wiped the RAM and the deep sleep settings by unplugging it from the AC adapter and also removing the battery, then waiting half an hour?

HP Stream 11; 2016 model. Installed a few updates, then tried to install the BIOS update (Intel Processor). Failed. Now the computer will not shut down, no matter what I try (holding down power button, etc). Nothing. Unit is plugged in, battery will not charge (50% left). Will not connect to any website except HP assistant. Should I just let the battery die and see what happens? Battery is sealed; I can't remove it either. Power button is useless. I need some help powering on my hp stream 11. It won't post at all. When I try powering it on it turns off and on then shutoff. I notice as it trys to power on the usb devices attached turn off and on too. I tried disconnecting everything, but still no post. I have some very important files on it. If there is any way to recover them that would be nice.
Some things to try:Hold the power button down for 10 seconds to make sure it is fully powered off.If you have another power adaptor, try that to make sure it is just not a matter of the battery being dead.Check that when you plug the adaptor in, the charge light comes on next to the power jack.Try holding down the Win key + b key when powering up to reset the BIOS.Try pressing Esc when powering up and then F2 to enter the BIOS diagnostic menu.If any lights remain lit when it powers off, leave it unplugged until the battery fully discharges.1 more replies
Last night I was confronted by a family member about an HP Stream 11 that I had purchased for them not powering on. They explain that they had opened the lid, and pushed the power button as normal. However, nothing showed on the screen, so they assumed the notebook was dead and went to charge it. The notebook still displayed nothing on the screen. This was the point where they came to me looking for a solution and I notice the light on the power button symbol is flashing. I press a few keys, waiting to see any sign of life, but there was none that came. I ended up holding down the power button to hard shutdown the machine and it turned off. I then proceed to click the button, to no avail. I told them to keep charging the device and I would mess with it today, as I assumed that it was a battery issue. Today the notebook still is not booting at all. I've noticed that when plugged in, the charging light - a dot right next to the cord input - is not even lit. This light will not light up no matter what outlet I plug the charging adapter in. Because of this, I suspect the issue may be worse and might be a motherboard problem, but I have no sure answer or way of finding an answer. I proceed to search Google to find solutions to my problem, only one forum post I've found and it was to hold the power button for 8 seconds and see if it would boot afterwards. That solution did not work. I am hoping that by posting here on the HP forums, I will get some swift advice on how I c... Read more

Please help. My on/off power button on the front of my tower is disconnected from my motherboard. Where exactley should I reconnect it too? So I can power up my computer. Thanks
Not all motherboards are the same. To find the correct header pins you have to refer to the motherboard manual although sometimes the motherboard labels the pins clearly enough so you can figure it out. However, with the motherboard installed in the case, it could be difficult.
If you can't find your manual, try going to the motherboard's manufacturer site to download a copy of the manual (usually a pdf format). If you have a major manufacturer made PC (Dell, HP, Gateway, Emachines, etc.), you might have to try their websites. Good info from those sites might be hit or miss.
I have my Windows 8.1 setup so the display turns off in 1 minute.
I have the power options setup so that the power switch shuts the system down.
But it doesn't. If the screen is off and I press the power switch on my PC the screen comes back on. I then need to press the power switch a second time for the computer to power down.
Is there anyway to configure Windows 8.1 so that the power switch does not turn the display back on, but just immediately shuts the system down?
You don't have to do that.
When the display is turned off and when you press any key on the laptop, it will bring the display back on.
Hello. I have an HP Stream Mini Desktop 200-010 that will not power on again after it turned itself off while it was idle. No power light, no fan movement, no beep codes. Things I already tried: 1. I replaced the original AC power adapter with a new one. It still does not power on so we can probably rule out a defective AC adapter brick and cable. 2. Held down the power button with the AC cable and other cables unplugged from the computer to discharge the power as stated on the HP support page. It did not fix it. 3. Opened the computer up and checked all the cables inside. This is not quite like a traditional desktop PC, so the only cables I saw in there were to connect the WLAN/Bluetooth card to the antenna on the top and a small cable for the speaker for beep codes. 4. Tried 3different power outlets around the house so a faulty power outlet shouldn't be the case. Is there any other troubleshooting I can try to fix this problem? It is already outside of the 1 year warranty. Normally I would know what to do to fix a problem if it could actually power on but I feel so helpless when it can't even power on to give me beep codes or anything to work with. Thank you in advance!More replies
