Q: Desktop Properties Background page

Desktop on my Win 2000 machine has background page in Properties menu; since I reformatted I have lost the window with Tile, Center, Stretch selections and page has reverted to radio buttons for Tile and Center choice. How can I get box with choices back? 5 of 6 other machines in office have window; one other is configured with radio buttons. Without stretch Co logo is skewed pretty badly...

I have a problem I have recently set another up another computer from one of my users and they had a certain jpeg image in their display properties+desktop+background+jpeg image. They would like to have the same image on their current machine and I do not know how to get configure the new settings on their new pc. The user does not have a copy of the image anywhere in the reistry, c: drive, or Personal drive. I tried copying the image but know success. I tried saving the picture from the themes tab but no luck.
If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again!

You don't mention what OS, but if XP, look in this directory:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\

It may be there in some form. If there is a Desktop.htt file, open it in Internet Explorer and right-click the image to save it as a jpg.

This is probably a simple solution, but I canít seem to figure it out. I use XP and was in Control Panel-appearance and themes-change desktop background-browse and selected a photo from a file folder I had on another drive. It imported the photo and it automatically included all the other photos from that folder. I donít want to have all of the photos residing (referenced) in the Display Properties-background selection box. How do I delete them from this area so they are not given as a background choice?

The default place for saving new themes is the My Documents folder. Have a browse in there. You can delete anything you don't want to keep.

Hi,
I am using Windows XP. I had a virus/trojan and I have used McAfee to get rid of it. My task manager was disabled. I finally figured out how to fix it and it appears that the virus/trojan is gone. However, I still cannot change my background. When I open the "Display Properties" box and click on the "Desktop" tab, it appears that the "Background" section has been disabled. The only background that I can get is a solid color. Can you please help me with this?

Thanks

On the desktop tab in Display properties, my background menu is diabled. You cannot click on anything on the list. The computer I am working on was given to me by someone at my job and they have apparantly locked it. I do have administrative previlage on my machine. I cannot figure out how they locked it down. They are not running any sort of control software on my computer. My only guess is they did it when they imaged the machine or through a registry edit.

Does anyone know how to unlock that menu?

Any help would be great.

Thanks

A few days ago my background was hijacked and since I have had issues with getting the background to restore.

The main problem I am trying to fix is that when I right-click on the desktop and select properties I am not able to get to the background options. Even going through the Control Panel does not produce the background display options.

I have run Spy Sweeper and AdAware and while it finds things removal of these hasn't solved the problems.

A:Background Option missing on Display Properties Menu

First check one thing, try to sign in as another user, if you are able to access the background features then the following will work...

After hours of analysis I determined that the problem was not in the system registry.

If you don't already have another account with admin rights, create one. Then log into it in safe mode just in case. Then go to where your user folders are kept usually in C:\Documents and Settings\"user with no background". Here create a new folder, we'll call it "new". Then move everything from your user folder to the new folder and delete the "user with no background" folder (this will not delete the user). Then reboot and login as your normal user. Windows will take a min or two to recreate the user files for your profile. When it loads go to C:\Documents and Settings again and move everything you can from the "new" folder back into your user folder with the exception of the NTUSER files, there should be two (in them lies the problem). This should restore your ability to access the background and everything else. You will need to reset some of your windows settings but all of your files and favorites should still be there. I still haven't had time to analyze the NTUSER files to determine exactly what the problem was but this method saved me countless hours of reloading.

Good luck!!

I ran Malwarebytes to try to remove a virus, (I think it was Windows Restore but it was two weeks ago). Now my desktop background has been changed to solid black and some folders are hidden. Google and Yahoo! take a long time to find search results and then they redirect if I click directly on a link. Audio advertisements play in the background and I also get pretty regular IE script errors even if nothing seems to be running. Every now and then IE will open on it's own and go to a pop-up advertisement. My computer acts like it is running IE on its own and it is constantly cycling through pop-up adds in the background, but I can't find anything on taskmanager which looks suspicious. If I run rkill.exe the audio advertisements stop but they start up again pretty soon afterward. I've been updating Malwarebytes daily and running both full and quick scans, in regular and in safe mode, but nothing shows up. I really appreciate any help I receive, as I have been trying on my own to get rid of this whit no luck.

Hi all,
I'm new to this site, and not too knowledgable, but I'm sure some one out there can help.
I run windows XP, and currently my desktop is showing an image that has come from a website I set up hosted by Webs.com. This is over riding my preferred background, which I can still see the edges of behind my Internet Explorer home page.

I must say that the website has been trouble free and extremely easy to operate since I started it over two years ago, but recently I found that I couldn't upload images properly. The images would upload but were far too large for the page, and I could not resize them as I had in the past. I intend to go through the Webs support to sort this out, but my concern now is that the images I had on my pages have disappeared, and been replaced with the message" Oops, Image not found. Webs provides your image hosting  www.webs.com. This is what shows on my screen when I close all tabs

Somehow, in my attempts to upload and resize my images I have caused this.

Everyone I have asked about this is baffled. Help please!

i don't know...but I suggest contacting your current web host for assistance.

A:desktop background return to previous background after changed it.

Hello Nirzan and welcome to Seven Forums.

Make sure you're following the steps in Option Two of this article, particularly Step 7, "save changes".

Desktop Background - Change

If the problem still isn't fixed, your computer may have damaged or corrupt system files. Sometimes files get damaged because of malware so run a full scan using your preferred anti-virus suite. Since no anti-virus is 100% effective 100% of the time, it's always a good idea to run some additional on-demand scans. These are free and recommended. The more scans you run (one at a time!) the greater the probability your computer is not infected.

Malwarebytes

ESET Online Scanner

SuperAntispyware

HitmanPro

If your computer comes back clean I'd next run a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and reboot your computer after each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Please post back if anything helped or not.

Hi, any help will be appreciated..
When I open my C:\WINDOWS window on My Computer, I get this weird picture of a manga-ish samurai (which I'm positive I've never intentionally downloaded) as the window background. Other folders window background are unaffected. I've tried changing Window schemes, etc but no change. My PC still works fine, everything functions (except for iTunes & quicktime, but I think its unrelated) so it's merely annoyance really, but I'm worried if it is a virus, it might spread. I've tried scanning with Ad-Aware and Avast but no virus were found. Wanted to try the online Panda scanner but took too long (I'm connecting from Indonesia)

Hello

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It's IMPORTANT to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.

***************************************************

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop. Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive% -(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Combofix and save it to your desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Close any open browsers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
I'll need the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

That's what this option is currently intended to do: when OFF, it shows solid color on login screen, when ON it shows the standard blue windows logo background on login screen. It is probably customizable, but only through a "hack" of some sort.

The ability to keep the lock screen background on login screen is coming up in the next major update. But it is not in the current official build.

There's no option to show your wallpaper on login screen and none is planned. You can, of course, use the same picture as your wallpaper as login screen background and wait till the release.

(I mention CCleaner because I just installed it for the first time yesterday so,
I believe my question relates to the after affect of running the program and
what it has removed or changed.)

My question is about the page format I see when I view

Examples (of CNN main page):

As viewed in Firefox

The view (the one I prefer) as seen in IE6 was the same in Firefox until I
noticed the difference this morning.

We used FrontPage 2000 to create our intranet. In the intranet we have some links to Word 97 documents. The one's that we notice we're having a problem with are the performance review documents. If I go into one of them through the links on the intranet everything works fine. The problem occurs when I want to save a soft copy to my hard drive. It runs through the save options fine but when I go to open it from the page that it creates on my hard drive the document doesn't come up. I get an error that the page could not be displayed. If I go into the folder that was created when I saved it I can open the Word 97 document but it ends up blank. This document is password protected so maybe that's the problem, but I was hoping that a Save As would save the information for offline storage. Does this make sense? I tried saving it in every possible way (that IE5.5 would allow me to save it in) and every one of them gives me a blank copy of the form. All of the information typed into it while on the intranet is gone. Some help, ideas, etc. would be great. As I said, I'm thinking that if the documents weren't read only we wouldn't be having this problem. Let me know if that's accurate. Thanks.

A:Word 97 & Front Page 2000 Save Properties

Just maybe this is what's happening:

Word forms, when copy and pasted, lose their protection. Once you lose protection, data is usually lost as well. Have you tried right-clicking on the hyperlink and hit "save target as" instead of opening the document/page?

If that doesn't help, you'll need to let me know what format you're getting out of it the other ways--I assume html.

I have been having CPU issues at 100%. I contacted HP.com support and the last suggestion they suggested was to update the video card driver. I have a Nividia GSForce2 MX200 (Compaq Computer) They sent me to a link to their ftp site and I followed the instructions to download, install, and do a restart. When I restarted there were no desktop icons. It probably means that whatever files are damaged are preventing the startup from finishing. The normal internet programs that launch upon starting up the computer are not launched and I have to manually launch them by finding them. I tried doing a last known good configuiration, and when that failed in safe mode I couldn't access the Start Menu to do a system restore. I tried rolling back the driver to the previous one to no avail. I called HP and of course they wanted to charge me since it is out of warranty. I said it was their file and I asked for a supervisor who told the tech to tell me the same thing. So I was stuck with chat support. We were able to try the system restore which didn't work. I went to Control Panel and tried cliking on Taskbar or Start Menu but nothing happens. HP sent me 2 links for some patches:
HP said in an email "Based on the information that I gathered from the chat session,

After running Ad-aware, a trojan file was detected that couldn't be quarantined, cleaned or deleted. Husband found a way to get it deleted, but there was a warning saying that it was associated with another file. Deleted anyway.

Ran McAfee VirusScan and deleted unwanted programs it detected. After that, the mouse wouldn't work, so shut computer down by holding button in until shutdown (only way it could be shut down).

Start up went normal until the desktop background came up. Message stating "C: couldn't be found, check address again(???)" popped up. I clicked OK then it just sat there. I shut it off again.

Start up went normal again up through desktop background. No message this time. Mouse seems to work, but no icons or start up blue bar.

The only thing we can think of is the deleted file was associated with our desktop icons.

On your desktop, right click and select 'Properties', then select the 'Desktop' Tab from the window that appears. You will be given a choice of the desktops (backgrounds) available;select the one you want and click 'Apply' then 'OK'.

Should you want to have a picture (Desktop background) that you have saved in your 'My Pictures' folder, then Right click on your desktop, select 'Properties' and then select 'Desktop' tab. You will see a button that reads 'Browse', click this and it should come up with your 'My Pictures' folder, if not locate the folder that has the background that you want, select your image and click 'Open', then 'Apply and OK'

Is this what you mean?

In Windows XP, is there any way to remove the list of "My Pictures" from the wallpaper (background) list in Display Properties? Every picture I've saved from the Internet and every picture I've saved from my digital camera appears in the list of background pictures that can be chosen from the "Desktop" tab in Display Properties. MOST of these pictures would be inappropriate as desktop wallpaper so I'd rather not have them as choices in the list (menu). In addition, there are hundreds of them! I don't want to delete them from "My Pictures" however. Thanks.

Is anything greyed-out in the Background area of Display Properties? Is the position set to stretch, center or tiled?
Do you have Anti-virus/Anti-spyware applications installed? I would scan with these, but before scanning make sure you have updated them. BTW, please give us your computer specifications (e.g. make/model of mobo, cpu, ram, etc.) be as precise as possible. DO NOT try fixing anything in the Registry unless you have experience in this area, you could wind up with greater problems than you're experiencing now.

I share my computer with two other people in my family. Yesterday I noticed that if I put a desktop background on my computer from the internet, it changes my sister's to the same thing, and vice versa. Saved pictures and the backgrounds the computer comes with don't do this, however. Also, the third user on our computer doesn't have this problem, and her settings are all ok.

The other thing that I see on my my account and my sister's is that under properties, under desktop, under background, in addition to a list of all the backgrounds the computer comes with, evey one of my pictures saved under "My Pictures" appears as an option as well. On my account it's all of my saved pictures, and on my sister's it's all of hers.

Besides the background changing between the two accounts, and a now extremly long list of every possible file that can be used as a background, i haven't seen any other problems yet. Just for the heck of it, i ran Spysweeper and Norton AntiVirus, and nothing came up.

It's really annoying, however, to have my settings change. Thank you if you can help.

A:Desktop properties blocked

Hi Neverender,

Welcome to TSG!

Try downloading http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/properties.reg
to your desktop.

To look at the file before you install it in your registry, you can open up a Notepad window, and then select the properties.reg file you downloaded to your Desktop to open it in the Notepad window to look at its contents.

You will see the registry key value that will change.

To look at the current value of that registry key before you install the change, you can run Start>Run>type in: regedit.exe>Ok
Then visit the registry key to determine its value - i.e. before you install the downloaded file.

If the valule is 1, then that is blocking the Properties from your Desktop, if it is 0, then this will not fix your problem.

Let us know if it fixes the problem or not.

To install the downloaded file to your registry: double-click on it.

I have a weird problem. I have several users on my machine. A couple of weeks ago as a user I was formatting my second HDD while in Windows (Windows XP SP3). One of the IDE cables died causing the machine to restart and not recognize the HDD?S. I replaced the cable and everything appeared normal. Recently I discovered that when using that user Windows will not accept changes for properties (other than desktop background) such as screen saver settings, power settings (turn of monitor after a period of time). I can make the changes but as soon as I exit and go back to look at them they are still at default. It is just this user. All other users are OK
Any suggestions?

This is driving me crazyNormally ALL my pictures in the My Pictures folder are in there, at the moment now I have to do the following....right click-slect propertiesselect DESKTOP tabclick BROWSE buttonSelect picture as requiredWhat I used to do before five minutes ago, was to just right click and go to desktop properties, and then just click on the tab for desktop and pick the picture, now I have to brose for it.Why is this ? I'd like to be able to change the location of the Desktop folder quickly. I like to set the Desktop to the folder of the project I'm currently working on.

How can I make a shortcut to the Desktop folder's Properties (Specifically the Location tab)?

THANKS!

A:shortcut to Desktop folder properties?

Do you mean folder options in control panel? If so, right click on it. There should be an option to create a shortcut. Doing so will create a shortcut on the desktop.

If I'm not understanding you, could you please clarify what you mean?

I run Windows XP; downloaded and installed Webshots today (I should be shot for THAT! lol) Then I decided I didn't want it, so uninstalled. When I did that, my desktop went blank and screen saver was disabled. I went to Control Panel, Display and clicked on Screen Savers...no problem. I re-enabled that. When I clicked on Desktop, the system froze. At first I thought it was a rundll32.exe problem, but now I don't think so. I finally waited for about 10 minutes and the Desktop tab opened. Problem is that it is now looking in My Pictures instead of Windows and I have thousands of graphics & photos on my hard drive. So...I tried to do a System Restore. No go. I went back to July 1 and it won't restore. Any ideas? I've spent most of the day trying to figure this out and I'm very frustrated. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

i did find another forum where somebody fixed this problem by deleting all the files in windows\web\wallpaper, but this didn't work for me. :-/

Is there any way in the Opera browser to get the page background to dim a bit - maybe by adding some .js file to the userjs directory in the profile? Something that works like the extension Kill Bright Backgrounds for Firefox is what I would like.

I'm trying to access the remote system properties by using the path Start>Right click-Computer> Properties> Remote Settings. But when I do it gives me the error of "Windows cannot find 'C:\Windows\system32\systempropertiesremote.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

I've gone into that folder and can't find it next to the other property ones, it's just vanished. I've tried to find a good place to download it but I just can't. Is there a way I can restore just this one file? Or anything at all? What are my options?

First time on these forums so I hope I get good support. Thanks for your time guys.

Hi,

I was hoping that someone could help me out with this as it's slowly but surely driving me ever closer to insanity.

Basically I until recently had this nasty spyware that amongst other things locked me out of my task manager as well as the desktop tab in the display properties menu.

I removed the spyware and managed to get into the task manager by disabling the disabling function in the group policy menu (by running gpedit.msc).

However am still not able to get into the Desktop tab.
The options in the tab are simply greyed out (as was previously the same with the taskmanager button). When I tried the same trick in the group policy menu by going into User Configuration/Administrative templates/Control Panel/Display option - It made no difference. What I have tried is to simply disable all the possible settings there were (in the User Configuration/Administrative templates/Control Panel/Display option).

Is there a different section in the group policy menu which I have to alter or is there some other solution?

I would be very grateful for any help or possible ideas any of you guys might have as i'm completely stumped on this one

Ta,

Paddy

Two nights ago I visited the web site Flash Fun Pages to find a joke to send to a friend who is sick with cancer. I did not end up sending anything and logged out. Yesterday, the background on my desktop was hijacked by this site. I ran Ad Aware SE and AVG both regularly and in safe mode, but did not find any viruses or malware. I also ran Trend Micro House Call but that did not find any problems either.

The problem was that the backgrounds were frozen at the end of the list, on "desktop", and could not be changed. I went on line to Downloads.com and looked under desktop display hijacked and found some freeware named Desktop Hijack Fix. This got rid of the Flash Fun Pages joke links and ads, but now my desktop display backgrounds are still frozen, although they are now frozen at the top of the list--'none'. I can choose a color, but I cannot access any of the background options, including the photo of my dog, which is my background of choice.

Interestingly, there are two users of my computer, and the other user does not have this problem. I can change the display properties backgrounds on the second user (my wife) with no problems.

How do I regain control of my desktop display properties. I will very much appreciate any help I can get.

I startup the computer. I click on a desktop item, and it will show me properties menu for that item instead of opening the program. I cannot hit on START, it flashes and disappears. Found if I hit CTRL and Start, it opens. Tried to do a System Restore, but I could not click on the Next button. I could not do a SAFE BOOT...could not get to that screen...followed instructions, but it did not run like the computer's instructions (so believe this must be affected also?). I do not know how to fix.

This computer does not have internet access. This happened once before over 6 months ago) after running a DVD. Some how I fixed it (also removed the DVD). Do not remember what I did. And it is doing the same now. They have not run that DVD again.

Any ideas of how to fix. I am assuming it is a Windows XP setting problem. But am not sure what or where or how to correct.

No sign of "fake virus".  Could this be an OS glitch?  Besides not being able to access programs through shortcuts, start menu is not accessible.  The only way to get to programs is through Task Manager using file, new task, and browse for the program. Will not let me type in address bar.  I am running Malwarebytes as I type this inquiry on another computer.  Thanks for your help

Do you have an anti virus app installed? If so, you should also run a full scan with that.

Sounds like you are still infected.

DL ccleaner and malwarebytes. Boot into Safe Mode, run ccleaner to remove all temp files and clean the registry. Then run malwarebytes and remove all of the infected files.

This is a strange one. When at the PC I can go in and look at the display settings and go everywhere I should be able to.

When I remote desktop in I get into the Display settings and I go to the settings tab but the Advanced button is greyed out so I can't look at the different software options within there (like the periphrial support properties of which components are enabled or not enabled.

I have tried this on 3 different ATI machines all with the same problem ONLY when remote desktoping to the PC.

It makes it hard to support the user when I can't see what the menu options are when connected remotely!

Oh and don't say go to the persons desk because some are over 2 hours drive away.

Anyone know how to make this work with these ATI cards?

I believe that's normal RDC behaviour as I've also seen it, with both ATI and NVIDIA cards IIRC. I believe those settings will be accessible if you use VNC, but I haven't used it in awhile, so I'm not 100% sure on that.

Just reinstalled my computer after having some trouble with my soundcard.

Everything was working fine until yesterday where all of a sudden the Windows Update window, my Desktop Properties window and my Computer Properties won't open up. They'll open up briefly for about 1/3rd of a second then close down again. I've tried searching for it but it seems I can't find any answer to my problem.

I thought it might be a problem with Dreamscene but couldn't find any proper information on how to uninstall it so haven't been able to give it a try.

Really getting annoyed since this is basically stopping me from getting my computer up to date and doing small things like changing my wallpaper.
Annoying to say the least.

For Win XP Pro, you need to run GPEdit.MSC, and blah blah...but there's no Group Policy editor for home edition.

So basically, I'm stuck. Could somebody please help me?

Oh, and also, when I right click on my desktop, I don't have that "Hide Desktop Icons" option. Help please, thanks..

I have been able to get rid of the spyware message background but I no longer have access to change the desktop apperance to anything but a flat colour. It will not let me access any of the preselected options in the left pulldown menu, it will not let me access the browse... button and I can not adjust the center, tile or stretch option either.

Any Ideas?

Hello computer is Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002
I have been having trouble with my desktop, i try to click on my shortcuts and folders but they just open up the properties menu like if you were to right click and click on properties. If this has already been asked please post a link to that thread.
Some important things you should know is that I have two games and one of them i have to go right click on desktop properties, settings, advanced, then trouble shoot and change the hardware acceleration to the third one from the start ( disable all DirectDraw and Direct3D accelerations as well as ... use this setting to correct severe problems with directX accelerated applications) and then for they other game i switch it to the 6h one further-est right on Full. I switch to each one to play the different game, but then the shortcut to open anything or folder opens their properties menu. thanks

Repeat the process with this:

regsvr32 desk.cpl

Hiya

Multi-page Background, a 3rd party add-in for FrontPage, allows you to easily add a background image to one or more pages in one easy step.

System Requirements
Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT

The Windows Installer 1.2 is required to install these add-ins. If this is not already installed, you can download it from http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/default.asp.

A:Getting background images to fit correctly on a web page

The only way I know to have it show just once is to set it as a background image within a table and have the table the exact same size as the image. if the image is 450x125 pixels, then the table should be the same size.

Hi! I have a problem that I've never seen before. When trying to access properties via right click from a specific desktop icon, the shortcut goes straight to the taskbar, but will not open the properties window. I am trying to access the target box. This only occurs on 2 desktop icons. With all other icons on my desktop I am able to access properties. The 2 icons are Phoenix Viewer and Hippo OpenSim viewer. I have recently done a reformat of my computer and this problem has only surfaced from that time. I have ensured that show all hidden files is checked, so am not sure where to go from here to solve this problem. Can you help?

A:[SOLVED] Unable to view Properties in desktop Icon

Try deleting the icons you're having trouble with and then open your START menu, go to ALL PROGRAMS, mouse over the program you're having issues with and right-click it and select SEND TO and then DESKTOP (create shortcut). All we're basically doing is creating a new shortcut to see if your previous shortcut got jacked up somehow.

Good day!

Mike
