I just bought and set up a new computer system, and am now trying to get my old one to boot, so that I can migrate the files needed for the new system. The monitor doesn't come on, and all I'm getting is a fast blinking green light on the tower. I've un/replugged all cables and power cords, and I know the monitor is OK because it belongs to my husband's matching computer, but my old one won't boot.

Help!!!

A:Compaq Presario won't boot!

I'm desperate, guys! Is there any other information I can give you to help resolve my problem? I have the Easy Transfer Cable for Vista all ready to go (and the software loaded in the old computer before I disconnected it and moved it to the card table), but I can't get my Compaq to boot.

If you can't help me, I guess I'll take it to Best Buy tomorrow and let the Geek Squad have at it...

Hi,
My Compaq Presario 2100 boot up to this:
PreBoot Execution Evnironment
PXE_E61 Media Test Failure. Check cable.
Then tries to reboot again.

Then I use the QuickRecover CDs that comes with my laptop. I get this:
Exception 0E ErrorCode=0004
CauseWay Error 09 Unrecoverable exception.
The CD eject.

Then I try to boot from the MS OS CD.
I managed to get into the recover mode and get a c:\
I tried chkdsk, fdsk, but got invalid drive.

Looks like my harddrive is gone.
Questions:
I want to get a bigger drive 40GB from the same manufacturer(Toshiba), will it be compatible with the BIOS, etc?
I tried to manually pull out the harddrive from under the front of the keyboard. But I don;t want to break anything in so doing. Any ideas?

Any suggestions is much appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario Boot problem

As I ahve been working with computers my whole life you must be one person that might not know a lot. I am not calling you a liar or anything but I do not believe that your hard drive is under the keyboard as HP owns compaq and I ahve not seen an HP note book that has a Hard Drive under the Key Board. I believe your hard drive is under tha lab top or at the front. Mind it being you will have to take some screws out and go hunting.

On anoter note if your Hard Drive was fried yur lap top would not even reconize it. There for Ibeleieve it is a windows installaion problem I think yiou said you are using Win XP. If you are do a full format of your Note Book and try to reload the boot disks. If the boot disks dont work the just load windws as your boot disks might have a problem or are corrupted with scratches mis use etc.

Need any more help IM me.

My boyfriends desktop which is a compaq presario that runs on windows xp crashed. It managed to start up in safe mode once and he backed up his files but now the computer will not boot at all.

You can turn it on, fans go and it lights up but the monitor only goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore in the upper left hand side. No F keys work and nothing happens when you press things. The only thing that responds is Ctrl+Alt+Delete, this restarts it but it does the same thing.

I have windows 7 and attempted to just boot that but even with the disk in the computer nothing happens. Still the black screen with blinking underscore. Nothing has happened recently to change hardware, wires or anything inside the computer and we have unplugged it and dusted the inside of the tower.

Any tips would be great.

I have a Compaq Presario 1215EA and last week it started giving a lot of problems. I was working as usual and the screen simply freezes with no apparent reason. I reboot and some minutes later the problem again. Sometimes it freezed after some minutes, others it would stay for over 2 hours with no problems.
Last friday it decided not to boot. I press the power button, I hear the fan running but nothing happens, no Compaq Logo, no beeps, nothing.
I think this might not be a power problem because the fan is working.
I already tried the CMOS clear by removing the CMOS battery with no luck
Anyone have any idea where might be the problem?
Do I have to send it to repair center ? I would prefer not to because the warranty has already expired and here they charge a lot, sometimes to do almost nothing.
Can I do something to try to pin point the problem?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Okay, sorry for the very little information, but someone that I know called me up and told me that "Their compaq Presario won't boot from a CD and they tinkered with the Boot up settings already, and it won't boot from the cd, because they had Vista Premium and they screwed it, and now they have Business, and it doesn't have any of their stuff on it. The CD is apparently a Backup cd, so if you have any suggestions on what to do, I only use dell computers so I am not totally familiar with the configurations of the boot menu right now.

ubuntuuser said:

What does that mean? Why did they go out and buy Business when they had Home Premium?

I bought a Compaq Presario about 6 weeks ago. No problem booting from a Restore DVD. Is his computer still under warranty? If so, I think he should call HP tech support. Also, did that computer come with a Restore CD/DVD or did it have a Recovery partition on the hard drive? It most likely had the latter; it would definitely had one or the other.

In what way did your friend "tinker with the Boot up settings"? Let's face it, your friend appears to be not very computer savvy. That's going to make this more difficult.

I have the above laptop and recently I had problem with it being the fact that it will not boot properly. Each time the power button is pressed, it will only try to boot for less than a second and it will shut off again. I have tested the ac adapter and it appears fine. A few of my friends said it could be a motherboard problem. Has anyone had this issue before? I was wondering if anyone knows exactly which part of the motherboard that is faulty so that I do not have to replace the whole motherboard.

Any suggestion or inputs in resolving this will be greatly appreciated.
By the way, everything is standard, has not been modified or changed.

Thanks!!

Hi. I have a problem with a Compaq Presario running XP Home. I took the CD player out and cleaned out broken pieces of a CD that was destroyed in it. I got it cleaned out, put back together and now the pc won't boot up. I don't know what went wrong. Cleaning the CD player was quite easy and went back together okay. I hooked all of the wires up the way they were.
On the front of this computer, there are two lights. One on the left which is green, and one on the right which is orange. Normally, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on first, then the orange light comes on during the loading process. You can see the boot process on the monitor.
Now, after hooking it back up today, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on, then the orange one comes on and goes back off after a moment. The green light stays on. Nothing at all shows up on the monitor, not even a blinking cursor -- it just stays blank. It stays that way indefinitely -- nothing.
The monitor light is on so it is apparently getting power, but shows nothing. I'm sure the monitor is hooked up correctly; it can only be plugged in one way.
While I had everything unhooked and was cleaning the CD player, I plugged the CD player back in for a moment and plugged in the power cord to the pc and pushed the power button. The power came on and allowed me to eject the empty tray. I did this to get the tray out of the way so I could clean beneath it. I tried to turn the power back off... Read more

Hello
Dinosaur Compaq Presario 4660 on windows 98.
Won't boot. The power is on, but there's no beep.
The hard drive doesn't seem to spin, but there is power to all the peripherals.

Thoughts on a solution? I took off the cover and couldn't find a bad connection.

Thanks
Shannon

A:Compaq Presario 4660 Won't Boot

Sounds like its not even reaching POST (Power On Self Test)

To start to boot, the power supply must reach the correct state and issue a Power_OK signal to the motherboard, within a preset time (about 0.7 seconds).

This is detected by the motherboard which resets the CPU and allows the boot process to start.

But, if there is a problem with the CPU or motherboard, the reset will not happen either.

So the problem could still be the PSU, or the CPU, or the motherboard, or 1500 other bits.

There is no easy way to find the problem apart from substitution by replacement at the end of the day. The HDD not spinning up does tend to point to Power Supply Unit first though.

My wife's PC is off duty due to something went wrong. Here's the story.
I can start the PC with the front button, the green light come on and the two "fans" run like ...too fast. That is as far as it goes. The monitor says. "no video signal." I have a green light on right next to the power cord plug-in. The fans seem to run much stronger than normal, and nothing else happens. NOTE: I "cannot" turn the PC off by the from start/off button, I have to unplug the cord to shut it down.

Any idea where to start checking here?

I have a Compaq Presario S3100NX that won't boot anymore. It started shutting off about every 15 minutes and got worse with time. Now it won't boot at all. The power will come on and the hard drive would show signs of life then quit. The drive is still spinning but with no power light.
Did the hard drive die or is the power supply not putting out enough power? All the fans are running.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario S3100NX now won't boot

Sounds as though it was trying to tell you that it was overheating (CPU) and then it died !

Your best option would be to remove all power and open the case and inspect.
Warning: Hardware experience required, and knowledge (manual) of your system

From there, I'd firstly say remove all dust, so as to view the capacitors on the M/board and heat marks.

At last you should begin to remove non-essential components.

Before attempting all this - I must stop and ask you is this what you are comfortable in doing ?
Otherwise a PC service technician may be required

Also given the age of the computer, is this worth it to you ?

my husbands laptop (compaq presario F700) was working just fine when suddenly the screen went black. The power was still on but nothing on screen. He turned it off, unpluged it for about an hour and tried to turn it on. It wouldn't boot, just did this weird thing on the screen that looked a lot like "snow" on a television and then lines of different colors and widths vertically for a few seconds. When he tried to press any of the "F" buttons (example F1, F2) it just beeped a weird beep. I don't have any idea what it could be. I've been around a lot of f**ked up computers and never saw anything like this. What could it possibly be? HELP!!

To pinpoint the problem you need to do some troubleshooting procedures.

Go here;

http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/580000-troubleshooting-guide-problem-builds.html

and follow the instructions under the section "You assembled the system, and it will not post"

Whether the machine is old or new the troubleshooting is the same. On an older machine the problem is likely the motherboard, however you need to prove the board defective before you replace it.

Okay, so this has been really frustrating me for a while. I mean, this laptop isn't one I paid a whole lot of money for or anything, but all the same I'd like to get it working.

I know for a fact that some aspect of the monitor, video card, or connections between them and the motherboard is shot. The backlighting on the LCD screen at the very least is broken. But thats okay, I want to use it with an external Monitor. Anyways, I'll try and be as specific as possible in describing my problem.

There's something wrong with the battery, because I can't even get a response from the power button without the powersupply attached.

Now, even when it's not turned on, the blue LED for the battery indicator is ALMOST always blinking. I've noticed that Scenario 1 only happens when it is blinking
Power LED- the one on the left
Battery LED- Middle one
CD LED?-one on the right

Okay, so the basic specs-

Compaq Presario F730US
RAM- 2x 512mb chips, 1Gb total
Now, what happens-

When I start it up, one of a few things happens

1)The left most LED turns on, then the right most, then the touchpad LED flashes, the powerbutton flashes, green light on the CD drive flashes, then everything shuts off

2)The left most LED turns on, then the right most, then the touchpad LED flashes, the powerbutton flashes, green light on the CD drive flashes, then everything shuts off, then starts all over again, without stopping

If the computer stopped responding , restarted unexpectidly or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders choose last known good config to revert to the most recent settings that worked.
If the previous start up was interupted due to a fpower failure or due to a power failure or because the power or re-set button was pressed or if you arnt sure what caused the problem, choose start windows normally.

Safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt

I've got a Compaq Presario SR2150NX. Today it wouldn't turn on. The light comes on when I hit the button but there is no noise like the machine is starting up just the light on the front of the PC. If I pull the power cord the light stays on for about 30 seconds and then shuts off. I've tried plugging the power cord back in and attempting to start it but I get the same results.

Anyone know how I can troubleshoot this?

try removing all power supplies, then holding the power for 30-90 seconds, then replace the power supplies and try booting again. if that doesn't work, there may be a problem with your RAM. try reseating the RAM next.

Ok, first of all i would like to say hello to all members of TSGF!!

Ok, to start, the system that im having problems with is a Compaq Presario V5000 (whichis stated in the title). I have done all that I can possibly do to help this thing. I have followed other solutions and im still having the same problem. Here is a list of what I have done:

Reseated the Ram
Reseated the processor
Replaced the CMOS battery
Bought new RAM and used all possible combinations in both RAM modules
Removed HDD
Replaced HDD
Formated HDD
Bought new battery and AC Adapter
Reapplied thermal paste to processor

I have done all of the above and the problem still continues to happen. What it does is, I will start the laptop. All the lights will come on, But nothing appears on the screen for about 15 minutes. When the COMPAQ logo finally appears, I go to setup. This is where I will start having problems. I cant really do to much of anything here. The laptop will freeze with a whole bunch of artifacts all over the screen. There is nothing wrong with the HDD, RAM, CPU, LCD, or DVD drive. I dont think its the motherboard. Sometimes it will boot my XP cd and it will begin the installation, then freeze . I really dont know what to do anymore. Please help me, any attempts will be greatly appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario V5000 Boot problems

I have worked on many V5000s. Good solid machines. Try this:

1. Unplug. Remove the main battery and CMOS battery. Wait 15 minutes. Reinstall the CMOS battery.

2. Remove HDD, DVD, one memory module. Unplug the touch pad (small ribbon conn under KB). Connect AC adapter. Boot to DOS with an external USB floppy. Twist the case gently. Press on the MB. Does the machine work normally? Keep it on for 30 minutes.

If YES, add back the touch pad, memory, DVD and HDD one at a time. Repeat the tests. If the machine dies, yiu have probably found the bad module.

If NO, you most likely have a bad MB. It is much cheaper to replace the MB with a good used one from Ebay than mess with the bad MB. There are several part numbers that will work. Just match your model category -Intel FF or DF and AMD FF or DF. ( FF = Full Featured and DF = Defeatured.)

Good luck.

Last night, I came home from work and picked up my laptop and set it up to download Sun Solaris 10 so I could burn it on a DVD at work today. This morning, when I woke up, I found my computer was off. I was surprised, but I just figured it was hibernating (I reinstall XP/Linux/Unix on my laptop all the time, and never know the settings). Anyways... I got to work and tried to boot it up. It makes noise when I hit the power button (fan or fans) but NOTHING HAPPENS. So far I've tried
Booting without the hard drive
Booting without the memory in slot 1 (under the keyboard)
Booting without the memory in slot 2 (accessible from the bottom of the laptop)
Booting with no memory at all
Booting with a VGA monitor attached
Booting from battery only (no AC)
Booting from AC only (no battery)

It should also be noted that the CD-ROM drive has power, will open up when I press the eject button, and I also see hard drive access lights flash a few times at the beginning of the boot process. I haven't been able to closely listen in to see if the hard drive is actually being accessed. The power button and all lights on the computer do not come on. But the fan runs. I'm guessing I have a dead motherboard? I leave this thing on alot, almost 24/7 and I've had it for over 2 years. The symptoms of this problem are so specific. I hope someone recognizes them.

My computer will not finish booting normally. The screen will either remain totally blank or else it will begin booting only to go blank or sometimes some small section of the screen will be repeated all over it. The boot up process always fails in one of four places:
1) The screen will remain totally blank on power up.
2) The COMPAQ logo will appear for 2 or so seconds then it will fail.
3) The COMPAQ logo will come and go, then the cursor blinks in the upper-left corner for a few seconds, and then it will fail.
4) Windows will start loading and "Microsoft Corporation" will appear on the screen for about 1/2 seconds, then it fails.

On all occasions, the fans and LEDs will turn on, and the HD and DVD make noises.

This is the part I hope will be a huge clue to some of you out there. If anything appears on the screen during two consecutive attempts to turn the computer on, then it will always successfully finish booting on the latter attempt. It will never finish booting unless this happens.

What is strange is that it seems to know whether something appeared on the screen during the previous attempt, because during the one immediately after that, the screen almost always remains totally blank. So at most something will show on the screen only every other time I turn the computer on.

It usually takes a large number of tries before something will appear on the screen during two consecutiv... Read more

This post belongs in "Mobile Computing" because the Compaq R3000z is a laptop computer...

regardless, it is probably the system board like you say. Heat has probably destroyed the motherboard. You could take it into a repair shop or take it apart yourself and see if you can clean the CPU cooling fan(s) and the cooling fins. It may be just a failed fan or motherboard

Download and write the latest Win7 official installer for your licensed version to flash stick from Steps 1 and 2 here which will also show you how to get a perfect install.

If you have files to rescue from Vista you can Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console.

Otherwise boot the flash stick, choose Custom install, delete all partitions and create new partition(s) as desired, format and install.

Hi folks.

Great forum, full of detailed info so I hope someone can help.

I have a Compaq Presario 5650LA (it's very old) and I am trying to install Western Digital 160 GB Caviar hard drive, model - WD1600AABB. The hard drive can be seen in the bios but no matter what jumper selection I use the machine just posts (You can see the Compaq softpaq bios screen and enter it if desired) then sits with a blinking cursor in the top left of the screen.

I have swapped jumpers, ide cables, tried both channels, disconnected the CD and floppy drive, removed all extraneous cards, swapped the mem modules about, removed and reseated the BIOS battery (it was OK) and updated the BIOS to the latest version but it won't boot. I have also used another (so that's two new drives used) identical drive but it did not help. I have tried seagate, WD, etc: hard drives with no difference and all the drives are fine on another machine.

Here's the crux: When I flashed the BIOS it would not boot from it's own floppy drive, so I swapped it out but had the same problem. But, when I tried an external USB drive it booted OK and I was able to flash the BIOS. So I have a machine that will not boot from floppy or HD but will boot from CD, Hirem's boot CD, etc. Even when I tried a HD on the CD ide channel I got nothing.

If you boot with an XP cd it will find the drive and begin to install until the first reboot when the HD fails to boot again. The hard drive can also be found and t... Read more

Hi,

I recently was given a Compaq Presario M2000. It's runs windows xp home edition and has a 80GB HDD. I was told it had some problems but didn't know what until I tried to boot it up. I get 2 error messages.

One is PXE-E61 Media Test Failure, Check Cable

Two is PXE-M0F Exiting PXE-ROM
Here's what I've done so far. I have detached the battery then pushed the power button for 30 to 60 seconds. I accessed where the RAM is and pulled each one out and resetted them. I also accessed the HDD, pulled it out and then put it back in making sure it is setted correctly too.

After doing all this I put the battery back in, attached the power cord and started the laptop up. She booted up and I was able to access the windows start up screen until I got to where I had to enter a password. At this time I chose to wipe the hard drive clean. Something happened when I tried to do this because I was getting random numbers and symbols scrolling down the screen really fast. Then all of a sudden it stopped and I had a black screen. I rebooted and received those 2 errors I listed above.

My guess would be a bad or failing hard drive. If the system is trying to do a PXE boot, the hard drive is not found or not bootable. Download the bootable diagnostic disc from whoever makes the drive and do a full scan and see if errors are returned.

COMPUTER: Compaq Presario 2100 Laptop running Win XP, Svc Pack 2.

For no apparent reason, the computer malfunctioned, and when booting, goes through the following sequence:

1. The COMPAQ screen?blank screen with COMPAQ in middle.

2. Error Msg: We are sorry for the inconvenience, but Windows didn?t start successfully. A recent Hardware or software change might have caused this?and goes on to advise that if I don?t know what might have caused it, to choose to boot normally. Or I could arrow up to select to boot in Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Command Line. No matter which one I choose, the following occurs:

3. I get the Win opening screen

4. A couple of clicks in the computer and it shuts down. As it shuts down, a blue screen with some message flashed monentarily, but I can?t catch what it says.

I tried to boot in Safe mode manually (f8) boot no matter which of the options I choose after the Safe screen choices come up, the above sequence takes place.

I hit ESC during boot (or was it f2?), anyway, I got to Setup screen and performed the Drive Test, and got a ?Fail 1 ? 7? message.

So I changed the boot sequence to the CD, hoping I could boot from the repair disk, but the above sequence again took place.

Is there anything else I should do or check before changing the hard drive? Can a repair shop re-write the boot area? And BTW, if I swap the hard drive, do all drives come with standard boot sequences? I mean, if I boot from the CD containing the replac... Read more

I have a Compaq Presario R4000 notebook computer. I have had it for about two years and so far have not had any problems with it. Last night I was using Adobe Encore when the program froze, I shut off my computer manually (by holding down the power button) and whenever I try to turn it on now I am unable to.

I am greeted with the error message "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this."

I am given the options of starting in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, or Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent setting that worked).

None of these options yield any success, so I turned to the Operations Recovery disc.

When I attempt to run the Microsoft Windows XP Recover Console it does not seem to work, and I am greeted by a black screen with "Microsoft Windows XP Recover Console. The Recovery COnsole Provides system repair and recover functionality. Type EXIT to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer." There is a line with the prompt "C:\>", when I type "exit", it quits the console and I return to the blue screen, typing exit seems to be my only option at this screen as nothing else happens.

If I take the route through which I would reinstall Windows XP, it tells me that I have a partition (Partition1) with 95700 MB free (roughly the size of my harddrive). However, to go this route... Read more

I finally got a reaction from this machine it will still not power down without unplugging and battery out. at first just black screen with options at bottom, once it allowed me to changed boot order but when I put cd in it won't boot either. No safe mode nothing. I did finally after months get this just now...
As follows: PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.1

CPU Stepping = B1 2000 Mhz
MemClk = 333Mhz Tcl = 5.0 Tcrd = 5 Tras = 12 Trp=5

601K System RAM Passed
1918M Extended RAM passed
1024K Cache SRAM Passed

P.S. I pulled the hard drive and hooked it to my desktop with a USB powered or unpowred tri hdd diagnostic device and it read the drive but wont let me explore it but it does start to run through files almost like it was trying to install itself on my machine so I cancelled it.
So I think the hard drive "might" be good still or slightly damaged.
Also F2 (start up check) will give me a please wait message...foerever.

Can anyone help with that little bit of info?
Thanks,

As the title states, I have a cq56-219wm. The LED code leads me to believe that the cpu has died. However, I have already replaced it with a new one and still am getting the same code with no boot up. I have tried the power reset by holding the power button for one minute and still nothing. The fans are functional as well. My question is, what would the next step be for this laptop repair and will it be worth it on a 2 year old machine? Thanks in advance.

A:Compaq Presario CQ56-219WM No Boot

Unless you can find something not connected back correctly (few will repair a laptop's hardware due to fragility) then I'd RMA the CPU to try another one. If the LED blinking code is consistent they should take it as proof it is not working and replace it.

Most new hardware has a year's tech support so you might even get them to help you go over it in advance of an RMA, which is the best way to set one up anyway.

There is no POST, the monitors LED cycyles (indicating it is connected to the tower and in power save mode), and no beep codes. The LED's on the front of the tower are lit (both power and HD) and the power supply fan runs but that is it. The HD does not spin nor does the CD drives eject buttion fuction (indicating no power). The whole unit acts as though it is in sleep mode.

I am gussing the power supply failed, anyone else have any experence to the contrary or have other ideas?

Oh I also tried wiping the CMOS but to no avail. Any help with this is appreaced.

Hi,

Whenever I boot up my Presario it does things in this order:

Starts making the fan noise

Displays the red Compaq logo

The Compaq logo gets weirdly distorted

It reboots and does it all over again!
I can't get into the BIOS or any other preferences, and I can't get to the Control Panel either. When I try to put in a recovery cd, it spits it back out and goes nuts again. Sometimes, if I leave it alone for a while (about 45 minutes- 3 hours) it lasts longer when booting and can actually get to Windows XP. Then, after about 10 minutes it reboots and goes nuts all over again. Here are my system specs:

AMD Athlon XP Processor 2000+ operating at 1.67GHz
2x 60GB Ultra DMA Hard Drive
256MB DDR SDRAM Memory
Integrated ProSavageDDR KM266 graphics with 32MB shared video memory

I know that the CMOS battery, the RAM stick, and the hard drive are OK.

What is going on with my Presario???

A:Compaq Presario 6320US Boot Problems

Well even with a dead battery and without a hard drive installed you should be able to POST and go into the BIOS. How do you know that the RAM is good though?

Sounds like it could be an overheating problem. The computer detects a high temperature and shuts down to prevent damage. In a perfect world it should shut off and stay off, but I've seen computers do an endless on/off cycle. In fact, I had a Dell that would endlessly go on and off until I yanked the power plug. You said if you leave the computer off for 1-3 hours then it'll stay on for longer. Well, the longer it's off the cooler it'll get which means the longer it can stay on before overheating.

Have you opened the case and looked inside yet? If it's dusty inside, the first thing you'd wanna do is dust it out good. Make sure all the heatsinks, fans, power supply, and all case air vents are completely clear of dust. The second thing I would check is the CPU heatsink. I'm pretty sure that CPU's heatsink has a metal retaining clip that latches onto (usually) a plastic bracket. The plastic bracket could have snapped, which would mean the heatsink isn't properly mounted anymore. That would cause the CPU to heat up to dangerous levels, which would cause the computer to shut down.

Those are the first two things I would look for and try to rule out. After that, it could be a dying power supply. Or the thermal grease could have dried out, which would mean you'd have to re... Read more

PC was working just fine a few days ago, then this happened.First, I couldn't get it to turn on so I unplugged the power cord compressed the start button counted 50 times reattached the power cord and it started.I was attempting to repair it once I figured out something was terribly wrong.  Then five or so minutes into repairs the system shut down.  I've tried this method six times and the same thing keep happening. The power supply is showing green on the back on the PC.Now I'm wondering if I need a new motherboard.  The PC is and HP/Compaq SR5123WM and it's nine years old.  And there is no support from HP for this unit.  But it works fine when it's working. Please don't tell me I need to trash this PC.  Every picture of my grandchildren and movies are stored in the pc.  At this point I cannot retrieve them. Please tell me this can be fixed for a moderate repair cost.  It's been the best pc I've ever had. Thanks in advance for replies.  Help.

Based on the details you have given, the most common  problems are:A. Failing power supplyB. Failing RAM stickC. Failing hard drive. The fact that the PSU has a green light has little value. There are a number of things the PSU has to do. The green light only means that part of it is on.This PC is rather old. Have you ever cleaned out the dust? All of the dust?

Hi,

One of my Compaq Presarios is doing strange things. When I plug it in, it automatically turns on. When it reaches the Compaq logo, it just stays there and nothing happens. One thing I notice is that the CPU light doesn't blink at all.

Does anybody have an idea of what is going on?

EDIT: The most recent time I plugged it in the fan started making this horrible noise (sort of like a high-pitched motor running at top speed combined with screaming).

Hello everyone!

I have been having this issue recently that I need help with. I am fairly clued up when it comes to computers, but this one has me stumped.

I have a COMPAQ Presario F500AU
1.8GHz AMD Turion x64 X2 Duel Core processor
Nvidia GeForce 6100
Broadcom Wireless
15.4" WXGA Widescreen LCD display
Windows 7 Ultimate beta Ver. 1000 (Windows Vista Home Basic was standard with it)

I recently had to take my DVD drive out and re-insert it due to dusty contacts. I put my laptop back together and inserted the DVD drive back in.

Please note, when I did all this, I was wearing a static strap connected to the computer while working on it on an anti-static mat with the mains and battery disconnected from it.

When I insert my DVD drive into the laptop, my laptop lights up, but I get no video signal. After about 30 seconds my computer turns off and on again. If I take my DVD drive out of my laptop, it boots as per normal.

Has anyone got any ideas as to how I could solve this issue?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
David

I have a Compaq Presario 6300us that fails to boot. It goes into the POST and gives me one long beep, then after a few seconds repeats. I have looked around for Compaq POST codes but have not found any for the newer MB's. Anyone know of a site with newer POST codes for Compaq's? I tried the Compaq/HP site but it is only the basic information (installing, drivers etc) and not what I am looking for. Any help is apprecated.

Hello,
I have a Compaq Presario Computer with windows XP on it. recently i started getting an error message which says lsass.exe and the computer doesnt go any further after I click on ok which is the only option there. It just goes to a blank black screen. someone mentioned to me that i should try to do a system restore on it through the safe mode, but that doesnt work either becasue same error comes even in safe mode. i have tons of data on this computer and i cannot afford to lose it. i need a way to recover my data. it seems to me that the only option i may have is ot do a system recovery through the cds that i got when i purchased the computer, is that true? someone also mentioned to me that if i have the Operating System CD then i might not have to do anything but just repair. How does this work? I cannot seem to find the O.S cd, where can i get it from? Is it the same as the Windows XP cd? also, this problem has been occuring since a few days now and of course i havent been turning on the computer since there isnt much i can do, so by this problem just being there is it making it worse or not? i just dont have the time right now but does that mean that the problem just sitting there is harming it further? Some people have also told me of how to recover data using Ubuntu or something, how good is that? please help me in this asap. thank you so much

A:Compaq Presario wont boot up even in safe mode

You can use a number of Linux distros to tunnel through the back door of a Windows system for the purpose of rescuing your files but if you have to burn a CD, it may as well be Hirens BootCD which includes MiniXP and once in there, you'll be in familiar territory to find and copy out your data on to memory sticks or an external hard drive.

When you've got it all, then go for the computer manufacturer's recovery disk and it won't matter too mucj if it restores the machine to the day it left the factory. You'll lose any programmes you've installed since then but hopefully, you'll still have the installation disks for those.

Well, my problem is a strange but persistent one. It appears my PC WILL boot and start but right after the microsoft loading bar, the monitor goes pitch black and stays off and I'm not sure if the PC is on but it lights up as if it were but won't do a thing.

Now, I've tried everything Vista has to cure this (Startup Repair could not diagnose ANY problems). What is the deal here?

Any help, especially quick and urgent would be appreciated as I NEED this laptop for work,

A:Compaq Presario F700 w/ Vista boot errors?

Hi

your monitor isnt supporting the refresh rate or screen size selected, you will need to start in safe mode and set it to 640X480 and then reboot back into normal mode.

If this doesnt cure it start it safe mode and use device manager to remove the video card, reboot and let Vista refind it, you may need to update the driver.

Ok. Trying to fix a friend's computer, and seem to have run into a rather strange snag.  Problem:  The computer will not boot past the bios screen. Details:  When you power on the computer, the compaq logo with intel inside shows up and has the <F1 Setup> and <F10 System Recovery> options listed as well.  And this is about as far as the computer gets.  After this the whole computer is just locked up, no buttons work on the keyboard no lights come on the keyboard ect ect.  I've tried mashing on the F1 key as soon as I power on the computer and I can manage to get it to say *entering setup* but it still freezes after this point.  I've already tried eliminating possible sources of problem, all expansion cards removed, HDD and Dvd Rom disconnected, single memory module (256mb ddr 2700), only power, vga, and keyboard connected.  Ive also used the jumper on the motherboard to clear the cmos hoping that would solve the problem, to no avail.  I've tried using a different stick of memory and different memory slot as well...  Tried using both a ps2 and a usb keyboard... Ive even tried pulling out the jumper for the bios password protection (even though it didn't have a password on it, just trying anything I can think of).  The installed bios version is 3.1, and that is about all I know about the computer at this point, other than what the website tells me of it.   http://h10025.www1.hp.com/... Got the infamous "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" on my mom's compaq presario desktop sr1900nx. It appears on a black screen after the red/white compaq screen. It takes about 30 seconds for the error to appear. There is a blinking underscore the line below it. I have done several hours of searching and have tried several things to get to at least to the system recovery area, but I can not even do that. When I cut power to it and try at least starting the boot process, I do get the COMPAQ red/white screen with 3 options on it. ESC to enter boot menu, F1 for setup, F10 for system recovery. The ESC & F1 work, but that's about it. I can not access the system recovery. It does NOT have a floppy drive, nor did the PC come with any recovery disks and of course I do not have any. I am just looking at this point to recover some pictures/documents from it...then as far as I am concerned it is trash. It was running windows XP. Is this even possible without spending a ton of cash on recovery cd's or for file recovery? I have also tried F8, Pause/Break and have hunted the setup/boot menu for anything that could help - and found nothing.

Thank you.

A:Compaq Presario Disk Boot Failure F10 system recovery not working

Hi Luchipboo, and welcome to BleepingComputer.

That Compaq has a recovery partition, this is why it didn't come with the discs. If you have the user's manual it should explain how to use it.

If you wish to backup the files that are on there first, you can alway install that hdd in another desktop as a slave drive. This will required setting the jumper on the rear of the drive in the slave position, and connect to the IDE data connector in the middle location. You should be able to access your files from there.

I was working on a customer's laptop, a Compaq CQ60, that refused to boot into windows and System Recovery disabled all recovery options except for Command Prompt.

On a hunch, after pressing Escape during BIOS boot, I selected HDD Test. The test ran and failed with "Replace Hard Drive." OK.. the laptop sat there for a few minutes and never did anything else, so I tried to get out of that screen. Nothing responded, so I just held the Power button to turn the computer off.

When I pressed Power again to turn the computer back on, the Power and Wireless LEDs comes on, the CD drive is accessed and then the HDD LED lights up for a second and goes out. The screen never comes up nor do the backlights.

I have tried hooking up an external monitor, but that never shows anything either.

I have tried taking the memory out, cleaning the contacts, putting them back in, swapping the modules around, booting with one or the other.... No effect.

I pulled the battery and the CMOS battery, unplugged AC and let it sit for a good half hour. I held the Power button for thirty seconds. Plugged the CMOS battery back in then the AC. Turned it on and still no go.

I cannot figure out WHAT could have happened!? Any other ideas? Thanks...

NOTE: THIS IS A COPY OF MY POST ON THE COMPAQ FORUM...getting desperate.

Hi, i bought a 6150b from a company auction. Everything worked perfect for the longest time. Then last week i went to go turn it on, and all it does is run the CPU fan for a couple seconds, flash the AC LED about 7 - 8 times, and while thats flashing the power and hard drive LEDs stay solidly lit. Then it completely turns off. This all lasts about 3 seconds at the most. Thats what happens when on battery power.

When on AC power, the same thing happens, except it continues doing the cycle over and over again until I unplug it.

I think it might have something to do with the LCD monitor, since it does not even show a slight flicker at all. No color change like it would from when turned off to a black back lit screen when turning on.simply nothing.

I opened her up (no warranty anyways) and checked all the connections for the keyboard, monitor, DVD drive etc....also reseated them as well, with no luck.

Pulled the both RAM modules and reseated them as well, nothing.

Pulled the battery as well, no change. Still cycles the same over and over again while on AC

There are no audible errors codes (real nice HP...), and im lost at this point.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario 6150b wont boot - no BIOS screen - powers on and off repeatedly

I think instead of just pulling and replacing the CMOS battery you might purchase a new one and install it. Proceed from there. If you get a screen and it's still has a problem try a new PSU. Jazz

Well, Last night, my laptop totally froze. No mouse movement. Screen froze. Everything. The only way to get round this was to disconnect any power to the laptop and remove the battery. That solved my 1st Problem. However, once i tried to reboot the system, All i got was a black screen with flashing Caps lock light OR in some cases it begins to start up however, at the ''Starting Windows screen'' It goes black and stays black.

Erm, i really love my laptop so if anyone has any suggestions to fix this.. or if i've posted it in the wrong section i apologize i just need a fix :(

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

I've a friend's laptop here that is in dire straights.

It is a Compaq Presario V3000 running Windows XP Home edition. Beyond that I don't really have any information to post because I can't even get the thing to boot in Safe Mode.

A regular boot will anchor this thing in a Windows start up loop. It loads Windows then the blue sceen flashes with an error message and is too quick for me to read what it says .. then it starts back to loading Windows .. insert vicious circle here.

A safe mode boot will get me to the "Windows is starting up" screen, but no further. It sticks there.

Anyone have a suggestion?

A:Compaq Presario V3000 - Win XP Home - can't even boot up in "Safe Mode"

I went in and disabled the "auto restart" function and have nailed down the BSOD error message.

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

Maybe this will help pinpoint the problem?

How do you access the Bios on a Compac Presario 4110. I keep getting the message 162 Sytems Options not set. 163 Time and Date not set. Having visited Compac they were not a lot of help. Downloading the software recommeded by them was a waste of time, still got the above message. Tried all the usual keystrokes etc no good. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

ok I hace a compaq that is all messed up. lets see one day the monitor would not work after a storm. Bought another, For a while the screen would be blue but change back to normal. The pc also would have a hard time starting up after it was in idle. We would do a hard start and for a while that worked. Now when I try to start it it turns on but the monitor says no vga/dvi input. There is also none of the preverable beeps that are supposed to be there so in short (well long)the motherboard is fried? So do I use it as a planter in the yard or is there a way to get it up and running. It runs on XP media center it has a micro ATX form factor motherboard it is also an AMD 64 Anthlon. ram is 256 mb 1Rx16 pc 4200 ddr2 533 mhz. With all that said can I just replace the motherboard and reinstall the reinstallation disks and be up and running? ( if it could only be so easy) What about the cpu. i know many questions here thanks for patients. Please help me. Tina

does your system have agp or pciex (or even pci) slot free? Is the graphics on board? It sounds like a graphics card problem, even if it is onboard. I'd try a replacement card (even if it's just a pci card) and see what happens...

I friend of mine purchased this Presario in 2004. She hasn't had internet since about 2006, so she hasn't had any of the updates since then. I brought her tower home with me since I have internet to load her updates. We're trying to get it internet ready. When I brought it home last week nothing would open. So yesterday she gave me the system recovery disc. I started with the Standard Recovery, but there were too many files that it couldn't recover. So I then decided to do a full recovery. After the full recovery it was rebooting and it told me that not all the system could reload and I couldn't hit okaybecause it wouldn't read / acknowledge my mouse. So, I unhooked her computer and rehooked mine to see what her alternatives were. I found a website, they wanted to know all the things it wouldn't oload. All I can remember is that it was things that could me downloaded later like: Norton, AOL, Adobe, MSN, and QuickTime.

So, I unhoked mine and rehooked her's up (and booted up my laptop). When her's came back up it's saying: NTLDR is missing Pres Control + Alt +Delete to Restart

My question for you is there anyway I can save her conputer? She doesn't have a lot of funds, being a singe mother of a 7 yr old and I'm just a good friend trying to help her out.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide

A:Compaq Presario

I decided to see what happened when I ctrl alt delete and then decided to do another recovery. Here's some more info (could not recover errors):

2. C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntdll.dll
3. C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntkrnlpa.exe

5. C:\Windows\systme32\dllcache\licdll.dll
6. C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\locator.exe

9. (Black screen instead of error message)
9. C:\WINDOWS\Installe152ec/msi
10. C:\WINDOWS\Installer\1b2cc.msi

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. IF this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced startup... Read more

I have purchased a Compaq Presario 600 with an Athlon XP 2200+ processor. I do not have a copy of Windows XP to wipe it with. Is there any way with the installed XP that I can refresh this system and remove data frome previous owners? Or Can I load Win 98?

A:Compaq Presario 600 ??

Compaqs usually have a hidden partition with all the factory loaded software on it in an image format. As long as it does and you can figure out how to access it you could probable do that - but you almost likely need the XP Product key and may need to reactivate XP after the recovery. XP can only be install on one machine at a time - so if they are still using it you are out of luck.

Watch the boot up for any recovery messages or take a trip to www.Compaq.com and look up the info for your make/model.

Just throwing this out in case someone can help

I have a Compaq Presario 5461 and when the hard drive crashed I got a new hard drive off ebay (same model the pc came with). When I try to use the compaq restore disk, i get an error that pretty much says restore can't be run on that machine. I realize that these restore disks are somehow keyed to the machine so you can't use them on another machine, but all the hardware is the same except for a little more memory. Only thing I can think of is a bios update that I applied. Did that alter the "signature" of the PC. If so, would it work if I backed of the bios update?

At this point the pc is just a toy, i'm using it to learn more about hardware, etc. I was able to install windows and just used my license key that came with the computer, so thats not an issue. But it bugs me that I can't get this restore to work. I did also notice that PC does not have an asset tag - wondering if the bios update zapped that.

Other notes - there was no extra partition that I know of on the orig hard drive, and there is only one restore CD (no diskette). I was able to do a restore of the pc several years ago
so I am pretty sure the disk is not defective.

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated

A:Compaq presario restore

a different hard drive than the one the pc came with shouldn't alter the restore process.
What error is it giving you?

Hi, i'm having a problem turning on my laptop. I'm using a Compaq Presario C502US. I've been using the AC adapter that came with the laptop but eventually the AC adapter became loose and broke. The charging icon (lightning symbol) wouldn't turn on anymore and I think the laptop has now run out of power. I've finally received a new adapter and when i plug it in the charging icon lights up. However the laptop still won't turn on. I've waited for about 2 hours but it still won't turn on. When i click the power button, the Power turns on and then it blinks. The Fan turns on for about 3 seconds but then it goes off and the power light blinks and the monitor won't turn on. Can anyone help me with this problem?

A:Compaq Presario won't turn on

Remove battery and power adaptor (ie all power out)

Hold down the ON button (to disperse all internal power)
Plug the power adaptor back in only (and to wall socket!)
Turn on!

If it works, turn back off, and re-install battery, turn On

I have this old Compaq and I used to be able to burn CD's until the day I stuck in my little portable device one would use to store pictures and things..I forget what its called, but you can insert it into a USB port then add or remove pics or anything and remove it and put it back around your neck and go. Anyway after doing this one day I go to burn a Cd and my computer is telling me I have these new drives called E,F,G, & H, which it has now bundled into something called a USB mass storage device. it no longer recognizes that i have a working burner.. it does not even recognize that I have a drive D. All it is reading is those removable device drives that came along with my junk drive. The 'Safely Remove Hardware" option has been coming up and ive used it to disable these other drives..but its still not working..How can I fix this?

A:compaq presario SR1103WM

Right-Click on My Computer, select Manage. In the left pane there should be a listing for Disk Management - click that.

Now, in the right pane, scroll down and see if your CD is listed, but has no drive letter. If so, right click on the grey part and choose "assign letter". I would use Z: (no chance of a USB device trying to grab that letter).

I was trying to upgrade my brother's Compaq 5340 from Windows 98 to XP. I kept giving me errors on the C: drive but would continue to work in Win98. I moved the valuable files onto another drive and formated C:

Now I cannot install anything on drive C: . None of my Windows installationd discs with work with it.

It keeps saying that there is a compressed file or directory on the drive or that it is write protected.

I booted of A: drive with a Win98 startup disc but cannot access C: drive.

What Is going on? Did I screw something up?

A:Compaq Presario 5340

Boot off a floppy disk and FDISK the drive - remove all the partitions and then create a new Active/Primary partition. Also make sure that Antivirus/Bootector protection is off in the BIOS. Then boot off the XP cd and format the drive and do the install. To boot off the CD you need to set thej boot order to CD-ROM, A, HDD in the bios. You can also delete the partition from the XP cd if you boot off it.

Related to the problem that I posted about here: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic141683.html, this is a little more urgent. The Compaq will frequently, sometimes regularly lock up: screen freezes, neither mousepad nor keyboard respond, and the harddisk parks the heads. Lately, it locks up when it's on the charger, and then is fine (at least, so it seems) when on battery-power. It's also sensitive to being touched--not bumped, it's that unpredictable. Sometimes, I can move it around without problem, other times, if I even touch it, it freezes.

The fans still run like normal, so I don't think that it's overheating. I'm afraid it's a motherboard issue, which I wouldn't be surprised at, considering that it's about 6 years old.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I am not near this machine, it's 60 miles away, so I can't look myself, but can anyone tell me if this is one of those pieces of junk that has the BIOS on the Hard Drive, or is it on the Mobo (like normal) ?

The person wants me to rebuild it, and I have never rebuilt a PC that has the BIOS on the HD.

What do I need to watch out for ?

What I usually do is FDISK the HD and then Format it, and go from there.........

Compaq Presario 7470

A:Compaq Presario 7470

I believe its a normal setup. However, even if its not the compaq partition is hidden. It is either completely invisible to FDISK or its listed under Non-DOS partitions in FDISK. As long as you don't touch that you'll be just fine.

You need to get the BIOS from Compaq. While the board maybe MADE by another company, who knows what slight changes to the specs were made.

When you do your next upgrade, build your own and get a real BIOS.

A:(COMPAQ PRESARIO SRI617CL)

If this computer has a Recovery Partition, when you boot the computer on the logo screen you should see a message Press F2 for setup and Press X for Recovery (X being F11 or whatever key it says) If you don't get that message, then this computer does not have a Recovery Partition (if you can still boot the computer you can look in Disk Management to see if there is a drive called Recovery)
Other then that you will need the recovery discs you made when you got the computer. How to Run Compaq Recovery Disk | eHow.com
