Why are there multiple Desktop folder paths in Windows 8.1?

Q: Why are there multiple Desktop folder paths in Windows 8.1?

I often "misplace" files that turn up later in different places. When I enter data into a file, I never know where it will show up... or not! E.g., there are at least 4 Desktops in File explorer and they don't always have the same information buried in them. Some files seem lost and suddenly they turn up in a place with the the same sub-adress.1) Desktop2) Desktop/my name/Desktop3) Desktop/This PC/Desktop4) Desktop/This PC/LOCAL DISK (C:)/Users/my name/DesktopHow can I simplify this so that when I put something in I can count on it being in just ONE place, and there are no folders with similar addresses where it may or may not be located? Something about the way FE is set up seems redundant but really isn't!

A: Why are there multiple Desktop folder paths in Windows 8.1?

You should be using the default Documents, Pictures, Music, and Downloads folders under your user (C:..../Users/<your name>/Documents) with shortcuts on your desktop to make them easier to open directly. Just simply look at the location it is saving things to before you click OK.You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Windows 7 auto update in the middle of the night messed everything up. My desktop is empty, my documents and other folders are also empty.

However, if I navigate through MyComputer, I can still see the files where they should be. Windows is presenting me with a new and empty directory instead.

REAL DIRECTORY (where my files exist): Computer/C:/Users/PC/Downloads

START MENU DIRECTORY (empty when you click downloads): Computer/C:/Windows/System32/config/systemprofile/Downloads.
So, the start menu navigation used to take me to the correct folder and is now taking me to some Sys32/config nonsense folder.

How do I get the desktop and start menu to access the correct folders like it used to before the update. My data and files are not just seems that way because they aren't showing the right folders.

A:Windows 7 using "wrong" desktop and folder paths after update.

Sounds like your user profile has lost it's connection with where it's data is stored.

Enable the hidden Administrator account from WinRE/Win 7 install DVD/flash drive.

User Account Password - Change from WinRE

Follow through part of Step 9. Logon on to the "Administrator" account

The key is a registry hack that redirects Windows back to the ProfileImagePath of the original profile.

Click on Start then Run. type regedit and press Enter or click OK.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
Once there, you will see the SID's listed for all of the profiles on the machine. Within the Key for each SID there is an entry called "ProfileImagePath" that will look like
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\UserName...
Scroll through the SID's until you find the one with the screwy name, like
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\youruserid.2
This is just an example, could be something else weird.
Just edit the Key to remove the ".2", and it will point the user back to their old profile...
Got this from but it's no longer there.

Undo the magnify.exe change made earlier and disable the hidden Administrator account if you want. I leave mine available in case I ever need it.

I did not know which forum to post in for my problem. Sorry if this is the wrong one.

I recently tried to relocate my data folders and something went wrong. When I was done I had dble folders. This is a picture of the results.
Attachment 171583

I moved them back to it's original place. I want to be able to move them a separate partician. I know that the problem has something to do with paths being incorrect.

When I click on the start menu and on my username icon it opens up my real user folders and not Libraries. I wonder if this is a clue. I have returned the start menu customizations to default and it still opens my user folders. Can someone help me figure this out?

Hi ariel5345

Have a look at this - Start Menu User Folder Buttons - Open to Users Instead of Libraries The second set of .reg files will reset your start menu open locations.

This should help put your user folders back to their default location - User Folders - Restore Default Location

Hey All,

I'm hoping someone here can help me - I'll try and be specific as I can, however though I generally know my way around a computer I'm by no means an expert.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium, 32-bit SP1

Okay. Onto the problem. Somehow I've managed to create two (or more?) desktops (not just shortcut icons or copies). I don't know How, or When, so experimenting with "restore" times is kind of a moot point.

One I assume is at the regular path, accessible through "my computer" on the left hand side under "folders". I can't get it's exact path because if I right-click on it and go to "properties" it opens up "Control Panel>Personalization". Opening the "desktop" via that path shows the icons/shortcuts I currently have on my "visual desktop". ("Visual Desktop = the desktop I see on my screen). If I add a new folder to my "Visual Desktop", this is where it shows up, not in any of the following locations.

Another one is accessible through my user account name after I open up "computer" under desktop (path: C:\Users\*username). The files shown here are various shortcuts, none of which are actually on my "visual desktop".

Yet another one - the one that brought this entire problem to my attention - is accessible under my videos folder. Anyway, if I open the "Desktop" via this path, it shows one shortcut as well as one folder, both of which are ... Read more

A:Please Help! Multiple Desktops, Separate Paths, Same Account

Hello Lara,

First off, I had to report the post for personal info, as well as the movie listing. If you don't remove it, a mod will.

Second, you mentioned a second desktop. I am a little confused. Do you mean that you literally have a second desktop location? I know that the desktop is located under your user name, for example C:\Users\Lordbob75\Desktop.

There might also be another location, but it is under system files I believe. Can you describe your problem a little better perhaps?

We appreciate the amount of info given in this post though.

As for a solution, try putting in your Vista disk and clicking "Repair"" This is NOT a reinstall, it merely fixes registry errors. This might clear some of that up.

On my desktop-computer i have shared some folders with my home network. Then i changed their paths, as i reorganized myself. Now it seems, when I acces the network, those folders paths dont seem to be updated, as i cant access them.

I can now of course "unshare", rename and share them again, which makes them again accessible through the network, but the old "folder names" still remain. why is that, how can i correct it?

Same problem with some old "synched folders".

A:shared folder and changing their paths

Curious, where do the old 'folder names' remain? Just in the drop down menu under 'Map network drive ...'?

If so those paths are saved in your registry.

I guess this may be a tiny bit off the subject here, but I am attempting this in windows 7.

I have a program file manager tool called 'Directory Opus' that is capable of calling windows external programs and passing them the current directory the file manager is sitting on.

So far so good.

Now I want to call a cygwin (linux/unix emulator for windows) terminal with that file manager.

Checking properties on the cygwin Icon I got the path: C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico -

So it is a path to a command and an argument to that command.

Actually I guess it is 2 arguments to a command since I think '-' in that position means to feed anything on STDIN to the command. At least that would be true in unix shell programming.

So using the Directory opus setup I pass this call:
'@async:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - <and here add {s}>'

So the call ends up:
'@async:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - {s}'

That call does just what it is supposed to. It passed the current file absolute address however cygwin terminal does not understand the windows path notation. If I were passing it: C:\subdir\blah\ It would just say 'No such file' Cygwin terminal wants to see /cygdrive/c/subdir/blah Or at least I think that is what is happing.

So to cut to the chase.... I'd like to put a little wrapper to Cygwin terminal in there with the code necessary to convert 'C:\subdir\blah\' to '/cygdrive/c/subdir/blah/'

But, I do not know how ... Read more

How can I merge many photo files in many folders into one folder using Windows 7? I'm looking for a free program which will let me pick about 80 folders with photos with similar names in them and with some sub-folders with photos with similar names in them and then copy all the photo files from the 80 photo folders and sub-folders into one folder.

It would be so helpful to avoid having to manually copy and paste photos from every folder into one folder.

I have several sets of folder trees, each with multiple sub-folders, each sub-folder containing multiple files. I would like to merge all of this into a single folder tree, retaining the same sub-folder structure and each sub-folder containing a single set of files, eliminating all of the inevitable duplicates that will arise from the merging.

Doing this manually with Windows Explorer is both tedious and time consuming. I have to select all of the files in one of the sub-folders, then drag the selection to the corresponding sub-folder in the main folder tree, choose 'move and replace' and tick 'do the same for the next x conflicts' and repeat this process for each of the many sub-folders.

Although I did an online search before posting this plea for help, I have only seen utilities that will merge all files in multiple folders into a single folder, I have not seen a utility that will do what I need.

I'm hoping that someone will know of a utility that will save me doing this manually for the next many years!

Thank you in anticipation.

I have several folder trees each containing many sub-folders, say A, B, C, D and so on. The names of the sub-folders are mostly the same between the various folder trees, although there could be an X, Y, Z in one folder tree and not in others, or only 20 sub-folders in one folder tree and 40 in another.

Each sub-folder contains many files, most of which are the same as those in other sub-folders of the same name. For example, folder A in one tree may have 50 files, 40 of which are the same as sub-folder A located in another folder tree.

What I am trying to achieve is a single 'master' folder tree containing all of the sub-folders in each of the existing folder trees, each sub-folder containing all of the files in all of the sub-folders of that name, without any sub-folders or files in each sub-folder duplicated.

I can achieve exactly this by manually moving files to the corresponding sub-folder in the 'master' folder tree, clicking 'move and replace' and ticking 'do this for the next x conflicts', but it is tedious and very time consuming.

Thank you in anticipation that someone will know how to automate this otherwise laborious process.

I had a large music library in a folder called music.

I installed itunes, and it decided to re-organize all of my files... So now i have 1,111 (that's right one-thousand one-hundred and eleven) sub-folders in the music folder, each containing a number of sub folders, and each sub folder has only one of two music files in it....

I would be laughing hysterically if there was simply an undo button, but there isn't.

It could literally take six months to manually go to the bottom of each folder tree, pull the one song, past it in the root folder, and then delete the folder it came from, over 8,000 for each of the files in my library.

So the question is: is there some utility i can use to pull all of the files at once, and then delete all of the folders left behind?

Thanks in advance.

A:Restore Users folder from Windows.old after multiple system recoveries

Hello Nigel,

Double check in each of the four Windows.old folders to see if one of them may contain the files. In addition, check to see if you have either C:\$INPLACE.~TR or C:\WINDOWS.~Q folders, and check to see if the files are in them.

Once you have what you wanted to recover, you could use the tutorial below to delete the four Windows.old folders to regain the HDD space they are taking up.

I can´t find a solution to this problem anywhere in the Net, so maybe you guys can help me. I just did a reinstall of windows 8.1 on my desktop using the option to keep all data AND program files. The process went on very well....BUT when I restarted some programs' exe files are not found by Windows when I try to open them (Ccleaner and Office 2010 are examples) Ccleaner I uninstalled and reinstalled but the message is the same " Windows cannot find [path], make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again...." Office 2010 I ran the repair option but the message came on again, so I reinstalled it and couldn´t open it because the message came on again. I think paths got messed up somehow because those files are certainly in my hard drive. Please can you help me out?

There are still doubts about what the possible and legal upgrade paths are for Windows 7.

Below I tried to compile some information in a way which I hope will be helpful.

Thanks to my friend Kari for his valuable contribution
Any other additions or comments are much welcome

1) Upgrade: to move from Windows XP or Windows Vista to Windows 7
2) Custom or Clean Install: wipes the previous installation and install Windows 7 anew. Does not preserve user files
3) In-Place Upgrade: upgrades from specific versions of Vista to specific versions of Windows 7, preserving user files and programs.
4) Upgrade version: Windows 7 license for those who own a valid license of XP or Vista
5) Full retail version: Windows 7 license to install on any PC, independent of previous installations or ownership. Can be reinstalled on other computers (when activated the previous installation is no longer valid)
6) Full OEM version :Windows 7 license to install on one PC, independent of previous installations. Can only be re-installed on same computer and hardware setup

Upgrade paths
The chart below shows in what situations one can perform an in-place upgrade (e.g. from Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional) without the need to migrate files or programs, and the situations when one needs to do a Custom (Clean) Install and replace the data in the target disc. This is the case for all Windows XP owners or Windows Vista Starter. In this case you will need to migrate your personal files ... Read more

Last week Microsoft announced the Windows 10 editions that will power personal computing and Enterprise systems across the growing wide range of devices available. With this announcement Microsoft also reconfirmed they will offer free upgrades to Windows 10 for qualifying Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices for the first year after the launch of Windows 10.

This week, a blog post on Microsoft's Australia Partner Network offered more detailed information about the specific paths for upgrading to Windows 10. As previously mentioned, but now further spelled out, devices that take advantage of the free upgrade will receive ongoing Windows 10 updates for the life of that device and the free upgrade to Windows 10 will be delivered through Windows Update.

I've had this annoying issue since I got this pc, but then I saw an old Intel Atom + Windows XP PC that does not have this issue (maybe it's because of the Windows version ?)

The issue is that when I highlight alot of desktop icons with the mouse alltogether, the PC slows down.
It feels like it struggles to highlight multiple desktop icons.

I know it's not really a big problem, but after I saw a much weaker PC that does not have this one, I had to check if I can fix it here

I just joined this forum today, so I am brand new.

Both my desktop and laptop were Windows 7 systems that I successfully updated over a year ago to Windows 10.

The desktop never changed the version showing when I use the winver command - still Windows 10 Build 10240. The system was an upgraded desktop purchased on ebay from a company that refurbs and upgrades the computer.

I tried to upgrade both of them to the new Anniversary version of Windows 10. The laptop updated perfectly the first time. It is also a HP system. The laptop version shows 1607 OS Build 14393.82

I have not had any errors.

I am not a hardware person, so I spent a long time researching how to run reports to answer the questions for the System Specs. I am attaching the reports from SiSoftware Sandra and CPU-z in case I did not correctly report some of the details.

I hope that someone can help me.

If not, can you tell me if I explained this well enough to ask Microsoft for help? I am a bit intimidated by that.

Thank you so much in advance,

I've upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1 (64 bit). Everything seems to work fine except for the desktop.
If I save a file to desktop it doesn't appear on the screen when it's supposed to show 'desktop', it does though in the appropriate folder in my user profile. If I paste a file onto the screen, supposedly to desktop, and look up its properties, the location shows the document folder. Indeed, if I look at the document folder in my user profile, it is there. That is, the screen is connected to the document folder instead of the desktop folder. How to turn it to normal?

Thanks a lot & Happy New Year,

I have a mysterious folder on the desktop in the two non-adminstrators that can log in on my computer. The folder has no name. When I right-click on it, the only choices are "Cut", "Create Shortcut", "Delete". If I choose "Delete", it says that the Palm Quick Install icons will be removed from my desktop. (Evidently this mystery folder was created by the that program, but it's not accessible by those other sign-ins, only my own.) Even if I say "Delete", the folder does not go away. What is it and how do I get rid of it?

I have a netbook book with windows 8 single language, when I updated the os in the third time, I noticed that all the files I move in the desktop are directly save in the contacts folder. All Icons are also move over there after the update. I tried to perform dos command to check if I can access the desktop in this path C:\User\cyberdent\. I typed cd dekstop and it says the system cannot find the path specified. but when I tried to type cd contacts and followed by cd desktop, I got this path C:\User\cyberdent\contacts\desktop>, so it means my desktop is inside the contacts folder. How can I bring back my desktop into the right place? TIA.

I have discovered, that Windows 7 Pro doesn't support multiple monitor for remote desktop service, as it is featured only for Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise editions. See this article
I wonder, if this feature is now supported in Windows 8 Pro or does Remote Desktop work the same way as in Windows 7 Pro ?
I need to connect to my computer using Remote Desktop Client and use extended desktop on multiple monitors.  However current Windows 7 Pro support only desktop spanning ( /span), which is not that useful.
Thanks for your reply.

I accidently deleted the desktop folder that holds most things like documents, downloads, google drive, dropbox, etc. I checked the recycle bin but it's now there. I searched on C drive and, of course, it's not there. I found it or something similar in File Explorer (but with a new name I believe). I copied the entire folder to the desktop. Now, when I add something to dropbox (one of the folders in the folder I deleted) the document is in dropbox on their website, but not in dropbox in the folder on the desktop that I just copied to. So....
QUESTION: How do I locate the folder I accidently deleted that originally contained many important files (e.g., AppData, contacts, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Dropbox, favorites.... music, pictures) etc.?

I was in the process of "sending to" the information from the original desktop folder to Dropbox as a backup - when the computer hiccupped or whatever and instead of clicking send to, clicked delete. The folder disappeared and is NOT in the Recycle Bin. Except for the one I found in the File Folder with a different name, I can't find what I deleted. Help.

I have tried this Right Click> Properties>Customize>Change Icon>Browse. Then I find the icon I want to use and then click ok then apply then pk again. Then the box disappears and then it shows the same yellow folder.

Here's the problem I am having. There was a iconset I downloaded from iconarchives and in the set there was 2 different kind of folders 1 was open but looked empty and one was open and had a image in it. Is there any possible way to use both for folders.

For example here's a link to the plain open folder Folder Icon | Yoritsuki Iconset | Hybridworks its called Folder Icon I would like to be able to use them for every folder icon even the main folders. But things I have for videos and music and specific things I would like to use the Folder 2 Icon | Yoritsuki Iconset | Hybridworks folder 2 icon.

I would like to be able to use both folder. Because this way I don't need the previews I would still be able to know what is in where just by there being the plain image.

I know this is a weird question. But just so you get the basic point. What I am trying to do is use the first folder as the folder for everything. And use the second folder for my things like that have my pics and videos and music.
I had found out what I needed to do to change the folder icons. As well as a few other icons. Like file type icons for .mp3 and so on.

I have a Desktop Hijacker malware infection. Prior to running HiJackThis and finding this forum, I have run SUPER AntiSpyware, SpyBot Search & Destroy and Lavasoft's Adaware 6.0 scans. I have Avast Anti-Virus Protection. All of these programs are detecting Malware, isolating it and removing it. However, in approximately 2-minutes it's back.
This malware continuously installs a folder in WINDOWS labeled "Privacy_Danger" which contains the Images and HTML for the advertisement/desktop that replaces my chosen desktop. It also continuously installs ac8zt2\msmdev.dll in the Temp folder of my Local Settings file in WINDOWS that seems to be the landing place for a TROJAN
labeled Win32:Agent-LTS [Trj]. Every couple of minutes Avast pop ups its detection of this infection.

I've followed steps 1-5 in posting, and have downloaded AVG and Deckard. However, I have not been able to run the Panda scan, as Avast keeps detecting a Trojan in the course of the scan and interrupting the connection. What else do I need to show or do other than the Deckard scan shown below...

Need assistance with this problem. When booting system sometimes I hit F9 to select boot device, when I want to boot from dvd or usb. Before you say I can list boot devices in bios I know this, the problem Is UEFI and Legacy my UEFI system is not secure boot and for whatever reason I have to F9 and manually select usb or dvd legacy, some versions of linux will not boot otherwise.

Anyway my problem is when booting system I hit F9 and this is what it looks like:

Please select boot device:

UEFI boot sources:

Windows boot manager
Linux Mint
Linux mint
Linux Mint
Linux Mint

Legacy boot sources:
Hard Drive
Network controller
Atapi cd/dvd drive

Over the course of the last year I have dual booted several version of linux, but it seems that linux mint and ubuntu add entries to my UEFI boot sources do I remove them, the list is getting to long, and currently only windows 7 is installed.

Hp Pavillion Slimline s5-1114
Bios version 7.16

Ps other than this annoying list the system boots fine right into windows.

Hello again BC Community:
I researched this problem last summer and can’t remember how I resolved it, or which tool I downloaded on recommendation that did fix it (either from the BC site a/o elsewhere). But, once again, whenever I turn on my pc using Windows XP Pro/32 edition, that ridiculous window folder pops up on my desktop for the C:\Windows\Sytstem32 folder. I always close it and go on about my business but it is really getting annoying again.
I know it has to do with my registry, I've heard about the quick fix, xp_system32opens.vbs, which is suppose to tell me if the script can fix my issue, or not. Plus other suggestions from geeks in Google, etc. But, I don’t like going into my registry at all. Especially to determine values. Even with Regedit backing me up in case I screw up, I prefer to stay out of there on my own!
Is there any easier way to resolve this? I’m sure this issue has already been addressed in the BC Forums before. If a thread solution already exists, could someone please send me that link?
I remain open to all other suggestions as well!
Thanks again. You guys are great!

Please help me to solve this issue.

Our computers louse desktop icon layout after returning from sleep.

Important facts about our setup:
Windows 7 professional SP1 64 bit
Redirected folders
We louse desktop icon layout every time after computer louses it's connection to server where our desktop folder is redirected.

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Configure folder redirection (Desktop) to some server.
2. Move user icons (icons that are not form local computer installation) somewhere on desktop.
3. Put computer to sleep.
4. Leave computer in sleep for 10 minutes (so that he louses connection to server where folder is redirected).
5. Wake up computer.

Every time we do this icons are moved to the left.

It doesn't help if we turn of auto arrange icons and align icons to grid.

Thank you in advance on your reply.

Best regards.

A:Windows 7 desktop (redirected folder) icons layout

I made a test, no matter whether the PC has connection to the server or not, the layout of the desktop icons should remains as it should be. it will not automatically arrange the icons. Sounds weird in your situation. According to your description, if this
issue only happens when the computer loses connection during sleep, then to avoid this, as a workaround, we can check the power management option of the network adapter, untick "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
If the network connection remains during sleep, and the issue remains after PC wakes up, then we can eliminate the server connection issue, in that case, please post back, and we can take a further analysis of the issue.

So, I wanted to look into getting the 'special' My Documents (now just called Documents) on my desktop in Windows 7, just as it was in Windows XP. I want to have BOTH the Users folder and the Documents folder on my desktop, not just one or the other. I did some searching through the registry to see if I could accomplish this, and finally came across HKCR\CLSID\{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}\, which still has the original My Documents Desktop registry data. I tried to add it to the desktop by going to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\ and I added the key {450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103} as a sub key in NameSpace.

I also went to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ and set the DWORD value for {450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103} to 0. However that didn't seem to work, so I repeated the process, only this time, I used the key value {450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1104}, which I had created (This new key was not a clone of {450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}, but rater a key containing only Context Menu values). And, surprisingly, it worked.

I was thrilled, until I started getting the error 'explorer.exe - unspecified error' whenever I tried clicking on it. This didn't happen before; it used to open to the Documents folder normally, and this was seemingly happening all of a sudden and out of nowhere. I tried re-tweaking the registry, but that did nothing. I even tried changing t... Read more

Every time i try to open a folder ( Mycomputer , MyDocuments , etc. ) explorer.exe freezes for about 5 min and then the folder opens. Sometimes it doesn't open at all and i have to restart it using Task Manager.
I had this problem before but somehow i fixed it. The folders won't open but after 1 folder has been opened the problem stops ( until i close all folders , then i have to wait 5min again ).

I tried using Desktop Maestro , MalwareBytes , AVG scan and defragmenting the disks... nothing seems to work.

The first time i had this problem i did scans and then i deleted some files to make some space , restarted my PC , restarted explorer.exe , deactivated some programs on startup and then the problem was fixed but i don't know which of these did it.
Also i rarely Shut Down my PC , mostly put it on Sleep, could that cause problems?

Hey guys, I been trying an looking everywhere for a way to fix this issue without wiping my Virtual Machine and reinstalling. I was able to determine that the issue was caused by IE8 when first opening upon a fresh install and selecting the settings for IE8.

Somehow during this process, IE8 assigns a security risk to my User Files folder on my Desktop. I'm not sure how this even happened as I've done many many installs and have never had this issue.

OS: Windows 7 Pro machines that connect to a 2008 server
At a business we help, they gave us a call yesterday morning saying that only specific desktop icons had disappeared. Looking at their machines they were missing shortcuts to a program that runs from the server as well as short cuts to folders on the server. However, nothing in the server seemed to have changed, the folder is still there, the modification time was when they last used it the day before. They are in a domain if that would help. We were able to simply go and place the icons back on their desktops yesterday and said they haven't had any issues this morning.
Their shortcuts were not from a single folder on the server
So, the main question, what would cause only very specific desktop icons to disappear from their desktop?

A:Desktop Icons Disappearing On Multiple Desktop Workstations

We just started testing the folder redirection group policy on windows 10 computers currently joined to windows domain. At first, everything was nice and happy valley.

But, just a day after, we started to receive complaints from the users using the testing computers that their wallpapers were disappearing, and the desktop icons were moving from their prefer location to another location on the desktop.
Nothing on the network has changed, and the windows 10 have not received any new updates of any kind, drivers or security updates, etc.
Can anyone share if there is a fix or is this something that Microsoft has not fixed? Looking at older forums, it seems folder redirection and user loosing personalize settings has been an issue for a very long time.
Any help or suggestion is always gladly appreciated.

I use the new Windows Live Mail client to access two IMAP accounts, Gmail and one provided by my University. Gmail works such that whenever you send an email through it, it automatically puts a copy in the Sent Mail folder. So if the WLM client tries to put a copy there as well, you end up with two copies of the email in the Sent Mail folder. The University IMAP account doesn't work like this. A copy will only appear in the Sent Mail folder for that account if the client program puts a copy there.

So the problem is the way WLM handles this. Most IMAP settings are specific to the account. You right click on an account, go to settings, and then go to the IMAP section and specify the folders and stuff like that. However, the option of whether or not WLM puts a copy of an email you send in the Sent Mail folder can only be set for the entire client.

In Tools->Options->Send is the checkbox for this option. If it's checked, I get a single copy of sent mail in the University account and two copies in Gmail. If it is unchecked I get no copies for the University account and just one for Gmail.

Does anyone know a way to fix this?

edit: Oh, and a side question, is it possible to make WLM stop showing the number of unread emails in the trash or spam? They're in there because I have no intention of reading them. I don't care how many are unread.

I am having very strange problem.

I am using Windows 7 - Home Premium 64bit. There is only one user on this machine which is Administrator and this computer is not connected with any networks.

I am trying to move all of User's folders to D: drive. I have successfully moved, My Pictures, My Documents, My Videos, Contacts and other folders but when I try to move "Desktop" folder, it gives me an error message at the end of the operation (after coping all the data to the new location) that "Folder Redirection Failed", "Operation was cancelled by the user". I have tried to change the location several times for this Desktop folder but every time I do it, I get this error message.

Now situation is... Data from my Desktop is present in its default location but also copied to D:\Users\MyName\Desktop folder. Means, exactly the same data is placed on two different locations but default Desktop location is still at C: drive.

Can anyone help that why I am unable to change my Desktop location?

P.S I am trying to change the location by right clicking on Desktop folder in User's folder, then Properties and then Location tab. It's exactly the same way by which I moved all of my other User's folders successfully.
Look forward to any quick help.

I recently had to deal with a pretty nasty Malware/Virus. i dont know which one, I didn't bother to read the logs of the virus detectors as I was removing it, I just kept working on getting it gone.I think it's gone now, but i'm left with one annoying side effect. I'm including a screenshot of my desktop. It's a folder. It's actually on TOP of my desktop, and it's a real folder. I can click on the 2 icons there, and they will open. If i try to move any icons around my desktop, it thinks i'm trying to put them INTO that folder. Now, if i go into hijack this, i find this line, I assume the issues are related.024 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection (no file)I cannot remove this with hijackthis. I select it, click Fix, then click scan.... and it's still there. I've got Adaware, Hijackthis (latest), Malwarebites, and none of them seem to care about the issue, or my lack of a desktop.EDIT: add spybot s&d to the list of programs i've tried. It found a couple registry entries for smitfraud, but it didnt' get me my desktop back.

A:Folder IS Desktop, and 024 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection

OMG i got it on my own. You have no idea how happy i am. I'm going to post this solution for search and archival purposes.

One of the above programs, not sure which one, finally unlocked the window. Scrolling my mouse to the top of the screen allowed me to pull down the window, and close the little bugger.

But i still have the 024 thing in my hijackthis, and it still wont remove. I'd appreciate help on this one just for peace of mind.

Hi! I'll describe my problem with an example. Let's say I'm moving a file to the desktop (the folder in Windows Explorer). When I then check the desktop, the file isn't there. My problem is that changes that are either made to the desktop or the desktop folder doesn't apply to the other one, so the desktop folder and the desktop itself looks different. How can I fix this?

Sorry for the confusing explanation :/

A:Changes made in the desktop folder doesn't change on the desktop.

I encountered this last night, something had changed HCKU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders key "Desktop" value to \Users\USERNAME\Cookies\Desktop from \Users\USERNAME\Cookies\Desktop.

The end result is that the desktop was moved to said folder, I had to change it back and restart explorer.exe to restore it.
It didn't change for the other user on the machine. HijackThis, superantispyware, avg, and malwarebytes came up clean. I tried a sfc /scannow and it found no issues.

This is a Windows 7 x64 install, with UAC enabled. Am I infected? I don't browse the web much on this machine, only used for gaming and occasionally PuTTY, EmacsW32 if I don't want to reboot into OSX. If it's not an infection, I'm not sure what exactly is going on. I really don't even use windows explorer much, save perhaps windows key -> type what I want to open -> enter, so I don't think I dragged anything and 'mv' in cygwin wouldn't mess with the registry, just move the directory, if I had a typo somewhere... Thanks!

I did something which caused the All Users Desktop folder to appear on my desktop. It's not a shortcut so I can't delete it since it is a system folder.

Is there anything I can to do remove it from my desktop?

Also, I wanted to have all my desktop icons in alphabetical order (except those that are permanently first). So I moved the Owner desktop folder into the All Users desktop folder; it shows up as a subfolder. Since I moved its contents into the main All Users desktop folder, there is nothing in it. But since I can't delete it I am assuming that all of Desktop Folders for each user is a system folder and can't be removed even though it is empty. I just wonder if my assumption is right?

Thanks, grandpaw

A:Solved: Remove Desktop folder from desktop

Try running System Restore to a point in time before you made these changes. You just had your system reinstalled. You need to leave system folders alone. Every user account has a Desktop folder. You can't delete them, and you shouldn't mess with them.

Hi there,
Thanks for letting me join.
I have a new issue on my laptop running Windows 7 that I seem to have a new folder called Desktop in my Downloads folder; not sure how that happened.
when I double click on the new Desktop folder, it opens to show all the files and programs I have on my actual desktop.

Can I delete this folder?
I'm a bit scared to do that without hearing from the experts first.
I really don't want to mess up my computer.

Can anyone help with that?
Thanks very much,

Yes, you can delete the folder. You may have (without realizing it) moved the Desktop folder from it position at the top of the Explorer Tree (file manager) into the Download folder.

I don't know why I bother you all again and again when you don't bother to reply . But on the off chance that someone might this time , here goes ...!

I am using ASP.NET in Visual Studio 2005 and coding in VB.

I have a small prob . No surprises there ! I want to add a new web form to an already existing project folder such that all the properties of the controls I add to this new form can be set and remain set .

I went to 'WebSite' menu ,in that I selected 'Add New Item' option then I selected 'Web Form' with a new name Default2 . I added a few controls . But when I try to set their properties ,especially the ID property, it changes when the focus is shifted from it .

For ex:
If I have a ctrl 'Label1' and if I set the ID property to 'lblTITLE' , as soon as I click on Text property the ID property changes back to Label1 .

If anybody has any solution ,please let me know immediately !!!

Any help is very much appreciated !!!
Thanks in advance !

I need to print about 10-20 pdf files in a specific folder as needed. I'm running WinXP Pro and thought I could drag the files onto a printer icon on the desktop, but this doesn't work. I'd prefer to have a simple program or batch file which would print all the pdf files in the folder. I found a Closed Link with a solution from 'Rollin_Again', but when I ran the vbx file, it printed only the 2 sample 'vbx' files in the folder, not the pdf's. Because this is my first post, I am not allowed to send a message to Rollin_Again until I've made multiple posts. I don't understand that part, but I'm told those are the rules.

Any help out there, or could someone contact Rollin_Again and ask him to respond to me here?

I tried selecting all the document, right click>print.
Selected all the document, then dragged them onto the printer icon.
Copied the printer icon into the "send to" option, then selected all the document and selected send to> printer_name.

I have been searching for a smart way of dealing with movies on several HDD, but yet to find something that fits me. I have a big archive, and want it to be visible in 1 directory.

Sofar I have been ok with running 2x 750gb in raid0, for a big nice movie directory.
Now is that I am totally out of space on the raid, and installed a 1tb drive for 2.5tb storage.

I store all the HD material on one machine (general use, gaming, etc) connected to my living room tv, and share it to a Dvico Tvix media extender for the bedroom tv, another desktop pc and to a laptop. (might seem overkill, but it is what it is)

Problem now is that i share the movies across the house on a few diff setups, and players like xbmc doesnt really help me, since for ex the Tvix uses something called "Netshare", and shares the folders i want, but i have to know where they are, and swap from hdd to hdd in the menu to access them, since they are handled separately.

Is there any way for me to use some kind of virtual folder/directory that i can share across the network, and will be seen as just 1 big folder of movies?
I tried using the "library" folder of videos in Windows 7, but does not work well for sharing over the network, netshare wont let me select it.
Only other thought I had is using "extended volume", to extend the current 1.5gb raid. But having a raid0 combined with a "virtual raid" in windows sounds like problems in itself..

windows xp has annoyed me thusfar only because i constantly set 'my documents' folder to icon view but any time i enter it it's back on tile view, this isn't a massive problem but any help is appreciated.

the big annoyance i have is that i'm an avid Half-Life 2 and Counter Strike source map developer and this means i regularly spend time trawling through folders for texture files, routines ad configs and each time i access a folder it is in icon view whereas i can only fully browse the media i'm interested in if it is in list or deatiled view.

thus can anyone give me tips on either how to set multiple folders within a mother folder to the same view setting or how to stop folders reverting back to 'tile' view after i have set it to another view.

basiacally any time i change a read/write issue etc i am given the option to apply this setting to all subfolders, but i wonder if there is a way to apply <folder view> settings to all sub folders.

A:setting multiple folder views

I don't know if there is a way to do what you want (maybe a utility on the web somewhere?), but these two things may help, especially the second one.

In any folder window, Tools - Folder options... - View tab.

At the top is the ability to apply view settings to ALL folders (not just sub folders).

About 6 lines from the bottom is an option to Remember each folder's view settings.

For reasons I won't explain, I want to have one large folder on a large external hard drive that will contain all of my pictures. The problem is that my pictures have been downloaded (by various cameras and software) in multiple folders and places on my C drive. I know that normally an easy way to do that would be to search in windows for all pictures and then copy them to the new drive and single folder. The probem is that several of the pictures are named the same but are actually different pictures. Additionally, the pictures have been downloaded from the camera multiple times in the small folders, each containing many duplicates.
What program (or windows application) can I use to copy them into the one folder so that I don't have duplicates and I don't have one picture (named the same as another) copy itself over the other.

Hello all ... does anyone know of an easy way of changing the name of a number of different files or folders at the same time? For example, I have a CD Rip (legally obtained of course!!) and the MP3 file names all are in this format: (band_name)_(album_Title)_(TrackNumber)_(Name_of_the_Track).mp3. Can I change the MP3 File names to this format: (TrackNumber) - (Name of The Track).mp3 without going in to change each file name individually? I.E., I would like to eliminate the Band & Album name from the file names, and change the underlines (_) to spaces ( ). I'd like to do the same to a number fo folder titles at once.

Is that kind of "batch" utility available?

As always, Thanks!!

In the left hand column there is "Quick View" at the top. Click on the wrench and set the folders to view.

"Unread Mail" will be checked by default, and that will be all the unread mail in each account's inbox.

Gmail can be configured to download messages from other mail servers. Or if you are using Outlook, you can create a rule that will copy messages into a particular folder.

Hello, I've been battling with multiple problems recently and I need some fixes guys.

I've attached a few images named "Problem1-3" with the 3 problems I've been experiencing and will let you exactly what's happening and what I want fixed down below.

Problem 1: The left side bar in my explorer folder has been changed. I don't know when or how this could've happened but I've given you an example of what it should look like and what MINE looks like. I need it to look like the example I've given you. Keep in mind I am aware that there is no "Homegroup" or "Libraries" folder as I have had those removed, and NO that's not the reason why it's like that because I removed those AFTER the problem occurred, and double checked. The desktop folder will not be moved to the "Favorites folder" but I'll give you more information about that in my other problem.

Problem 2: My Desktop Folder (why is it a folder in the first place) will NOT leave my User Account folder. If I DO try to move it to, say, the Local Disk for example, it simply recreates itself and is now in BOTH locations, and when I try to delete one it deletes both, forcing me to go to the recycle bin to recover it.

Problem 3: When I click my Windows Explorer File that's pinned to the bottom of my desktop, it directly opens all of the Windows folders and redirects to System32. I am aware that it usually opens to the "Libraries" folder but isn't there a way to change where it fir... Read more

hi guys,

i'm working on a winxp machine that has 2 users that need access to all the same information. i'd like to keep things as transparent as possible so windows doesn't really appear to function differently than normal. i've also read up on changing the target folder for the "My Documents" folder. my idea is to create a new folder and point both accounts MyDocs folder towards that new folder. i understand there may be the occasion where one user will want to use a file that the other user has open but that is a minimal concern. i'd also like to make is easier to back up the files from both users with a single operation instead of digging through things.

so the big question is: is there any reason that its a bad idea for 2 users on the same machine to use the same logical folder as their my documents folder?

A:Sharing the MyDocs folder with multiple users

Your working too hard at the objective. There's a Shared Documents fold that is intended to be shared by everyone.

Under the All Users, there's the \Shared Documents; everyone has read/write/delete
permissions and can copy or create files therein.

Hi there

Is there any way to link directories on several DIFFERENT HDD's to the SAME top directory / library.

Trying a Multi-media server with video files on HDD1, HDD2, HDD3.

What I want is to say create a top level directory videos, then under that directories video1, video2 and video3,so my application which says Multi-media folder -- I could point to directory videos -- then I'd get the 3 folders as part of the top level directory.

(Using Spanned disks can work but I'd rather not go down that route these days as the 3 disks I want to use are EXTERNAL HDD's and spanned disks need ALL the drives to be available and if there's any error you lose THE LOT. !!! )

With Linux it's easy -- just create 4 directories in your /home folder say /mnt/videos as top level, then in this directory create 3 sub directories /mnt/videos1, /mnt/videos2, mnt/videos 3

then mount the devices /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdb2, /devsdb3 in /mnt/videos1, mnt/videos2, mnt/videos3

then browsing your home directory with mnt/videos you'll see all the data files in the 3 directories from all 3 HDD's -- no matter what their size, -- you only need a FEW BYTES too in your home directory !!. You don't actually copy or move any data from the HDD's to these directories. Things like search are great too since you point the search at the top level directory and the system will scan all the sub directories (so all 3 disks) too.

A lot of multi-media type programs seem only to handle ONE top level folder so when th... Read more

However, when it copies more than one file, even if they are in the same source folder, XP recreates the folder structure in the dest folder.

Tried searching Microsoft web site and Web also but no luck.

Is there some XP setting I can change or do I need to find a freeware app to do this?
