CD disc stuck in 8-year-old Compaq Presario desktop tray

Q: CD disc stuck in 8-year-old Compaq Presario desktop tray

i have a compact preserio pc, about 8 yrs old, I am unable to remove a disk. the tray opens, and disk stays inside. I have opened the front cover, can see the disk, can move it back a bit, but doesn't seem to be enough space to grab it with pliers. can you assist. is it a matter of removing the entire tray. thanks.

A: CD disc stuck in 8-year-old Compaq Presario desktop tray

hi. I fixed the problem. my fault. I didn't place the disk on the tray properly when loading. my pc told me that by not completely closing, but in a seniors moment, I automatically pushed the tray in. this cause the disk to slide over, and past the spindle. I could see the disk, but couldn't grasp it, till I had an eureka moment. I wrapped some sticky side out duct tape around the blade of a long knife, being careful to secure the end towards the handle with sticky side down duct tape. then I simply guided the knife under the disk, with sticky side up under the disk, and removed it. another use for duct tape. usually duct tape is placed on my mouth. thanks for all of your assistance, as I didn't see the same solution already posted. but I am happy anyway.message edited by bobmackie

ok my laptop was wiped and i cant find my recovery disc i try'd to go to the compaq website to order or download a new one but i've try'd 3 times over the last couple of weeks and when ever i get to the page to choose my model it says oops sorry page not aval at this time. Does anyone know where else i can get one its for an xp pro version i would preffer it if i could down load it

A:compaq presario v6000 recovery disc

You will not be able to download one, as it has Windows on it and will be by CD only.

Are you sure that yor PC does not have a hidden partition on the hard drive with the recovery files already on it?

Most recent models do, and there is usually a program or keystroke combination to invoke the restoration.

I am looking to reformat my Compaq Presario V5002EA laptop with windows XP home edition SP3. Having read various forums it seems there should be an option in my 'Start > All Programs' menu to begin a system recovery program. Within this program there should be an option to create a set of Recovery Discs from which I could do the reformat.

I can't find this option anywhere on the computer and would prefer not to fork out £31 to HP if I can create the discs myself! Can someone please tell me how to find the Recovery Disc Creator?

thanks in advance

The Compaq Presario v5000 series laptop has several models, so we don't know which one you have.

What's the part/product number(P/N) on it?

Start up the laptop, then load the BIOS screen.

Is the hard drive detected and shows as enabled?

I have this computer that i got from my stepson that he was trashing. I do not know much about it other than it was an 80 Gb memory, and 192 Mb of ram. I have had it for about 2 years, and i used it mostly for a trial for an operating system to see the different ones. I installed and uninstalled LinuxMint, PuppyLinux, and some xp operating systems from different downloads, that were created from other individuals. I am not computer eliterate, and that is why i use this computer to try out. I did not want to do all this on my good pc, because, a lot of it i do not know. I would like to be able to just wipe everything off, and start over again, but a lot of the things i hear, do not understand. I cannot make it read a disc, (windows), I do not know which way to go, but would just like to see if it can be done, before i trashed it.  I have solved my problem, so far. One of the os disc that i had been useing was windows 8 elite, and it also was not working. I tried it again, and withen there startup menue, there was a link for what was called a mini, and i never used it. The larger part of os would show on my on my older pc, but never would load. I clicked the mini this time, and a very small program came on. most of the links would not even work, but i could get to disc management, to see that there was a partition there that was not alocated, like the program that was there been deleted. I reformated this partition, and tried the larger os again, and it worked. the operating system went on my older pc. Do not know what happened, but what ever it was happened when i was putting another system there. I even divided that partition, formated, and put another there. I plan to get rid of the one that i put on first, extend the second one, and go from there. Now, i saw somewhere that you could increase ram and memory by somehow formating usb flash drive, and it adding to my old computer. Is that right? Thanks for all the help, i got a lot of replies.Jimmy

I've been using my desktop since 2005 w/ Xp OS (which no longer supports). Since last year OS won't boot up with first try.On first try PSU fan will keep running & running- faster but won't bootup until shutdown power & try 2-3 times, then OS will start & complete the booting process. Recently, noticed it's taking 10-15 times rebotting before you can see the windows coming up & alos noticed the date/time is several years back(probably the battery also dying).  Meantine, I tried with different PC Power cable but the same thing. Lately, the Power supply unit seems won't get any power, so, now even PSU fan also won't run & even the green light-not seeing. So, I opened the cover & took out the PSU -opened it & found lots of dust in it-cleaned it  & plug into power outlet (alone) & now I see the green light. Bought a new CR2032 battery to install. Do you think I need to change the CMOS postion? Do you think it's PSU problem or it's Mother board problem or  Hardrdrive problem? I've lots old data & my little child's sweet memories of pictures & videos. I do not want to loose anything. Your advice is highly appreciated. Thanks.

Dear Friends,

Good day to everybody. i'd like to ask for your advice or opinion re: my computer trouble.

I have a Compaq Presario Desktop (5000 series) who has been consistently having intermittent power on and off problems. I will be able to use it one day, and then the following day, it just wont turn on! I already had it checked by numerous technicians, but they can't seem to find anything wrong with the computer because when they turn it on, the computer powers on. I bring it home and then, a few days after, it just refuses to turn on again!

I had every aspect of the computer checked and observed. Power source is ok. The AVR is new and works when i use it with other devices. RAM is working fine. I dont know what to do anymore! I know something is wrong with it but the technicians can't put their finger on it. I had one technician who told me that the motherboard is short-circuiting with the casing so he put foam/insulator all around! *Sigh, I dont know if that is even possible, not to mention logical...

I hope any of you guys and girls out there could help me out.. I will be extremely grateful for any suggestions that you could give. THank you very much.
Sincerely yours,

Ok guys, im new here so i hope you can help me to figure this out.

I have been more than 3 days fighting with this an my options now are CERO. My problem:

Im formatting and reinstalling a fresh Windows XP on a Compaq Presario SR1923WM desktop, the first installation process that copies the files to the hard drive its fine, the problem starts when xp starts to install devices, it firstly was stopping at 35 minutes, i tried to find out the problem opening the setupapi.log, then i did erase the .inf causing the trouble and nothing. By the was i was using aXP version.

Then i tried with another disc, this time a Windows XP for HP machines, this times the minutes went down completely, the progress bar reached the 1% and then again showed me one gray screen and the system was hanging again.

Then, i figure out that the initial XP installed on the machine was the Windows XP Media Center Editio 2005, so i tried to install this with an OEM disc and then again it started to hang at 35 minutes.

I have tried other XP disc and nothing happens, i just can't get any OS installed on this PC.

Any help would be so much appreciated!

Sorry for my grammar im not native english speaker.

Last year, I did a clean install of Windows Vista Basic 32-bit in this computer and then donated it to a neighbor.

Its motherboard has SiS 760 graphics, but the heatsink on the chip was broken off and I was concerned about overheating, so I installed a NVIDIA GeForce 6200 AGP card.

The computer has been working fine since I set it up.

The neighbor contacted me today about the display alternating between normal size and too large, depending on when and how many times the computer is restarted.

I discovered the display adapter in the Device Manager to be on "Standard VGA Adapter" instead of on "NVIDIA GeForce 6200".

Thinking the neighbor had accidentally uninstalled the driver while uninstalling some other programs, I checked the Programs And Features list and saw it still listed there.

I decided to uninstall the driver and then install a more current version.

To my surprise, the current version and a few older versions refused to install because they detected the graphics device as incompatible.

I know the AGP card hasn't died because the monitor is connected to it and displaying.

I'm really stumped at this point, so I'm hoping someone has a solution.

I want to perform a Windows repair on a Compaq Presario desktop computer but the person doesn't have an OS CD. I think what Compaq does is put the setup files for windows on a seperate partition so you install it using their recovery console. However, if you do this then it reformats the hard drive no matter what. This is NOT what I want to do. So my question is, if I can get my hands on a Windows XP Home full install CD (The computer came with Home) and enter in the CD key that came on the side of the Compaq, will it work correctly? Thanks.

A friend brought me their Compaq Presario SR2173wm running Vista Home Premium 32 bit. (reason: It was too slow for them, I should clean it up / update anti virus and stuff)

I have a workstation set up with confirmed working peripherals and monitor. I plugged in VGA cord, PS2 keyboard, USB mouse and Power cable.

At first, it turned on and I was met with the log on screen. The odd thing is that since the mother board doesn't have a working speaker, it doesn't have beeps. (not even the 1 good beep)

I put the supplied password and it was running really slow. This was late at night, and I decided to work on it in the morning. I let it go to sleep and didn't worry about it. The power light was blinking amber. I went to bed.

Next day, it was completely off! (My other computer was on, and was woken up with a shake of the mouse) This Compaq did not.

I power cycled the computer, even removed the power cord for several minutes.

It turned on, the lights come on, the fans turn, the hard drive spins up, the keyboard's LEDs flashed, but no signal is reaching the monitor. I let it stay like this for over 5 minutes to see if it would finally come on. (since it's a slow PC) Nothing.

Things I have tried to no avail:
confirming VGA cable & montior still work on other systems - they do power cycle the machine re-plug in all the peripheral cords, then turn on opened the case to try other things: reseated the RAM replugged the PSU cables to the Mobo reseated the on... Read more

I have an old Compaq Presario MV540 that I use just for games. It's running on Windows XP.
I had two user accounts on the computer that were password protected. Somehow, my lovely brother figured out my password and got into my account. He then changed my password along with his password. Then he forgot both of them (what a genius). We tried unsuccessfully to figure out the passwords for sometime. When that didn't work, he kept pressing random buttons (he just keeps getting smarter) and somehow, he set a COMPUTER password. So when we turn on the computer, it won't even go to the account page now. It has a black screen and asks us to type in a "Computer password" which he doesn't know. I'd like to get this ordeal over with and just reset the whole computer (nothing on there is worth saving anyway). We don't have any recovery CDs or the Windows XP CDs anymore as we had thrown them out when we got a Mac for general usage.
How can we resolve this? Can I do anything without a recovery CD? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

A:Need to reset my old Compaq Presario Desktop MV540 to factory settings

It sounds as if it's the BIOS p/w that's been re-set in which case this may not work. But ... if you can boot from a CD why not try and install Ubuntu? A free & legal Linux operating system? It would make the machine usable.

How to install version has changed, but method the same.

Hope this is some help?

I acquired this desktop about 2 weeks ago. It's 3 - 4 years old and came with Windows 98SE originally installed, but the owner upgraded it to Windows XP SP1 several months ago. The file system was left in FAT32 format and was not converted to NTFS format.

The Western Digital Caviar WDC100AA hard drive is rated at 10 GB, but shows the following in My Computer:

HARD( C: ) - 7.35 GB

SYSTEM_SAV( D: ) - 1.94 GB

Other than the files in the Recycle Bin and in System Restore containing the same information in both partitions, everything else appears to be Compaq-related files that are years old.

What would be the best way to consolidate all 9.29 GB into the C: partition and do away with the D: partition, and what would be the best program to use?

Don't tell me to reformat the hard drive and start from scratch because that's not what I want to do.

A friend of mine brought me her Compaq Presario S5140WM Desktop PC for help installing a new graphics card. What I found was that her computer was soo infected with viruses and spyware that some of the files needed to install the new drivers was corrupted and the hardware driver install failed. I ran an online virus scan from Trend Micro (Housecalls) and used Spybot S&D and Ad-aware SE to clean up what I could. After all that, I ran another online scan using Panda Active Scan and the results of that scan showed that she still had spyware and a number of Trojans which Housecalls was not detecting. I recommend that she back up all critical files and run the HP recovery program which was located on it's own partition on her HDD. It seems that she must have encountered some sort of a problem with the recovery because Windows now reports that she has less than 100MB of HDD space available on an 80 gig HDD.

She really doesn't want to go through the process of running the recovery again. Is there a way of correcting this by other means? Before she ran the System Recovery, she had approximately 41 gigs free on the HDD. From what she is telling me, it sounds like Windows created a complete system backup that was not deleted once System Recovery was completed.

What do you think.

A:Low HDD space after running HP system recovery on Compaq Presario S5140WM Desktop PC

I would run the recovery again, and pay special attention for option to format the drive before installing windows.

HP (I believe) calls it a destructive install - as it wipes the partition removing all data from it.

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

Ah yes. Was in here a few months back going on and on about all the problems that I was having with my partner's seven year old Compaq Presaro.

I had no sound, crashes and viruses galore....amongst other things.

With some free help from local friendly mum and pop PC repair men I managed to get:

A free sound card
Free copy of Win XP w/2nd Service Pack
A free dust cleaning (which instantly stopped all the crashing)
A DVD Reader / Writer for $30
A AGP 128mb Video Card for $40
2 sticks of 512mb RAM for $40

After wiping the stupid partions on the hard drive, formatting and installing all the good stuff, I have a computer that not only works really awesome but serves as a pretty good gaming computer as well!

Previously this computer couldn't run any type of games and before this all started it took twelve minutes to boot up. Now it only takes a minute and a half to boot up and I have a lot more in startup!

My ONLY problem NOW is that I can't install the drivers for my HP printer/scanner. For some reason, during driver installation, Win XP is reporting back that it can't access a necessary file. I'm not sure if this is due to me trying to cut corners and install the printer through Plug & Pray first but have removed the drivers and the printer icon in the printer section in Control Panel.

Anyone have any clue as to what I might be doing wrong?

Our router network works perfectly on all our computers except for one Compaq Desktop PC. It shows that it has a connection, but Explorer or Netscape will not work. (The only two browsers he has on it.) We have updated all the software and drivers and they even charged us for it.

Would anyone know what the problem might be?

A:Router- Five year-old Compaq not browsing

OK; confirming that other systems attached to that router work just fine and only the Compaq Desktop PC is failing to access webpages - - -

Please report the system info: eg Win/XP/Pro, Vista, Win/7 ... ?

Get a command prompt ( start -> run -> cmd ) and then enter ipconfig /all >myTCP.txt
Copy the contents of myTCP.txt and paste that in your follow-up.

We are looking to see how that PC has the networked configured ...

Hi, I have an old (but working amazingly good!) 64bit processor HP Compaq 6730s, upgraded with a SSD drive and 8gb DDR2 ram memory. Currently it is dual-booting running windows 7 home premium, 64 bit edition, pretty smoothly -it has given no problems so far, and Ubuntu 14.04. I am pretty tempted to upgrade to windows 10, but given that it is a relatively old computer, I am not sure wether the hardware will be fully compatible with w10... and also I do not want to loose my partitions! So what do you recommend me... shall I go for it? Thank you very much for your help and for creating amazing computers like the 6730s! Gonzalo

Hi: I have the elitebook 6930p which has basically the same hardware as your model. W10 works just fine on mine, but I do not have a webcam, nor do I use the fingerprint reader or protect tools security software, so I cannot confirm that those work on W10. You should be able to recover to W7 very easily if you do not delete the windows.old folder. To revert, go to settings>update and secuity>

ok I hace a compaq that is all messed up. lets see one day the monitor would not work after a storm. Bought another, For a while the screen would be blue but change back to normal. The pc also would have a hard time starting up after it was in idle. We would do a hard start and for a while that worked. Now when I try to start it it turns on but the monitor says no vga/dvi input. There is also none of the preverable beeps that are supposed to be there so in short (well long)the motherboard is fried? So do I use it as a planter in the yard or is there a way to get it up and running. It runs on XP media center it has a micro ATX form factor motherboard it is also an AMD 64 Anthlon. ram is 256 mb 1Rx16 pc 4200 ddr2 533 mhz. With all that said can I just replace the motherboard and reinstall the reinstallation disks and be up and running? ( if it could only be so easy) What about the cpu. i know many questions here thanks for patients. Please help me. Tina

does your system have agp or pciex (or even pci) slot free? Is the graphics on board? It sounds like a graphics card problem, even if it is onboard. I'd try a replacement card (even if it's just a pci card) and see what happens...

I friend of mine purchased this Presario in 2004. She hasn't had internet since about 2006, so she hasn't had any of the updates since then. I brought her tower home with me since I have internet to load her updates. We're trying to get it internet ready. When I brought it home last week nothing would open. So yesterday she gave me the system recovery disc. I started with the Standard Recovery, but there were too many files that it couldn't recover. So I then decided to do a full recovery. After the full recovery it was rebooting and it told me that not all the system could reload and I couldn't hit okaybecause it wouldn't read / acknowledge my mouse. So, I unhooked her computer and rehooked mine to see what her alternatives were. I found a website, they wanted to know all the things it wouldn't oload. All I can remember is that it was things that could me downloaded later like: Norton, AOL, Adobe, MSN, and QuickTime.

So, I unhoked mine and rehooked her's up (and booted up my laptop). When her's came back up it's saying: NTLDR is missing Pres Control + Alt +Delete to Restart

My question for you is there anyway I can save her conputer? She doesn't have a lot of funds, being a singe mother of a 7 yr old and I'm just a good friend trying to help her out.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide

I have purchased a Compaq Presario 600 with an Athlon XP 2200+ processor. I do not have a copy of Windows XP to wipe it with. Is there any way with the installed XP that I can refresh this system and remove data frome previous owners? Or Can I load Win 98?

A:Compaq Presario 600 ??

Compaqs usually have a hidden partition with all the factory loaded software on it in an image format. As long as it does and you can figure out how to access it you could probable do that - but you almost likely need the XP Product key and may need to reactivate XP after the recovery. XP can only be install on one machine at a time - so if they are still using it you are out of luck.

Watch the boot up for any recovery messages or take a trip to and look up the info for your make/model.

Hoping I don't need a new hard drive.

Received Compaq computer CQ61, With Win 7, 64 bit. If I try to run the Hard Drive test, I get "Hard Drive Not exist". (The computer's words, not mine) Really don't want to buy new hard drive, of course. This drive is only 2, but original equipment and no longer under warranty.

I'm told to run certain programs to check the drive. However, they have to be downloaded to the computer in question, and I can't connect via that computer. I created a bootable Flash drive, but it doesn't let me get to the hard disk.

The Disk is a SATA (by Seagate) 320 GB, Momentus 7200.4.

I can't partition when it can't see the drive, I can't run programs when I need the Hard drive to store them. Looking for some way to save the drive for a while while I save enough for a new drive!

Anyone with suggestions?

A:2 year old compaq computer all original parts -- HD not found anymore

Hello ChuckB9. Welcome to the forum.

First up: have you opened the case and physically checked the connections to the hard drive?

Be sure to do this with the PC off and the power cord unplugged.

Second: If all connections are good the Start the PC and immediately go into the BIOS setiings. On the first tab navigate to see if the hard drive shows up in the drives listings. If not, do other drives (CD-DVD) show?

Third: When you start the PC, can you hear the drive "spin up". Can you hear it running?

My compaq was working fine until one day it just went off during a user session. Pushing the power button made it try to start but when it began to load windows 98 it quit again. After serveral retries it finally started up again. It ran OK for about one week , then just went off again. This was during a user session.(user session meaning it was in use at the time). I tried to restart it but it would not restart. Finally it tried to start, then said press F2, then the video went out. Nosthing shows up on the screen now. When powered on you can hear the hard drive start up but that's about it. The three year warantee lapsed about a year ago . I was wondering whether or not this has something to do with the cmos battery. Apparently several people I know who purchased a Compaq laptop have run into the same problem. I have a friend who owns an IBM thinkpad which has done precisely the same thing. Any suggestions.

A:Compaq presario 1200XL111

It is possible for the cmos battery to cause similiar problems, but from what you are saying it looks like a processor problem. For the system to just shut off in the middle of being used and unable to start up again, shows the possibility that the processor has overheated and the machine has powered off, however because the machine is still too hot it wouldnt fully start up again.
To say that your video has then gone, could mean the processor is completely knackered, signs of life can still be seen from the machine but nothing will appear on the screen, in most cases the monitor will stay on standby even when the machine is powered on.

I suggest a new processor, with new heatsinc and fan.

Its most likely that the backlight has failed. It can be fixes but it costs a upwards of $100 to do by a professional. You could try buying the parts online and doing it yourself though if you are technically inclined.

Hello! I am attempting to change a 80mm fan in my Compaq computer. The fan I want to change is, I believe, called the CPU fan. It has a lever next to it and 4 screws holding it down. My question is this: Do I have to move the lever on the side of the fan in order to pull the fan up and proceed to remove the screws or do I just remove the 4 screws?  Also, how do I remove the screws considering the awkward position they are in? (I've been working on trying to remove the screws; however, it is difficult to maneuver the screwdriver into the top of the screws to remove them. This is because part of the fan case is above the screws making it necessary to place the screwdriver sideways in order to remove the screws.) Thank you for your response.

What is the make and model # of your mouse?
In Device Manager, right click the Unknown Device and Uninstall it. Now remove the USB cable for the mouse from the computer end. And restart the computer. When the computer comes back up, plug in the mouse into the Back USB port of the computer and not the front or through a hub as these ports are weaker. It should install. if not, go to the mouse manufacturers support download drivers site and type in your model # and download the driver.

I have a PIII 733mhz Compaq Presario 5900T that I need some help with.

1st thing is that my harddrive is broken and I am looking into getting a replacement for that, but my question is:

What kind of disks does this computer support?
I tried a 160gb samsung disk, but it hangs at compaq logo screen so I guess it's too big. (hoping to be able to change this through a bios update later)

2nd part is that when I found a matching disk, how will I restore bios on it? I have no restore cds left...and I suppose this computer stores a part of its bios on a hidden partition like all other compaqs.

The 384mb ram limit is fine with me since I am gonna run Linspire linux on it.

Anyone that can help? I tried Compaq support and got no help whatsoever.

I want to see if it can be fixed, cheeply if possible, befor I do anything else. Thanks for the help.

A:compaq presario 1200

Sounds like your gonna have to get you hands dirty and take the cover off. Remove the cover and start pulling out parts. ;-)

The best way to troubleshoot a machine is to only boot with the bare requirements.

CPU, RAM, VIDEO CARD...over course power supply...

I'd take out all other parts and PCI card, remove all hard drive cables and floppy cables. Take note which way the RED LINE goes when you put it back together...

If you have MOVED the computer recently, IE transported the computer in the back of your car truck, you might want to try and RESEAT the video card, and RAM. Shipping a computer in the mail and it arriving DOA at the customer more than likely points to a video card that needs to be reseated. Lucky for us, most new motherboard come with AGP slot lock thank goodness...

You should have gotten a Restore CD with your laptop. That is the OS and all specific drivers, apps and Compaq features that were on the system. Anytime you install a "fresh" OS, you will lose all that stuff. With Compaq, I think this is not all bad. If you bought the laptop with something other that Win2K, then you are most likely SOL and on your own.

I was not sure just where this question should go so if this is not the right place please feel free to relocate it.

I have THIS desk-top:

Hewlett-Packard Compaq Presario CQ2723wPC
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
AMD EI-1200 Accelerated Processor
Memory = 4GB/G(something I can't make out) DDR
HardDrive = 500GB/
I am running a PPS PE9 photo effects program that is only working about 50%

I have found the minimum requirements for running this particular program:

Open GL 2.0 capable video card with 256MB dedicated RAM
Memory 8GB+

How do I find out what kind/size of video card, how much dedicated RAM, and available memory my unit has ?

If my unit is falling short in any of these requirements, is this something I can buy and is it within my abilities to make the necessary improvements ?

I am quite mechanically/electrically adept but I know little about the insides of a computer.

Thanks for reading.

A:Compaq Presario Particulars ???

The Compaq Presario CQ2723w Desktop PC(H2L89AA) comes with Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit and comes with this hardware:
Pegatron APXD1-DM(Redwood A) motherboard
AMD E1-1200 APU 1.40 GHz dual core processor which has an average benchmark score of 682
4 GB of DDR3-1333 RAM
Intel Radeon HD 7310 graphics which has an average benchmark score of 171
Realtek ALC662 high definition audio
Atheros AR8152 10/100 Mbps ethernet
500 GB SATA hard drive
Super-multi DVD burner disc drive
65 watt power supply

If you wanted a desktop that's speedy and has plenty of hardware upgrade options, you couldn't have picked one much worse than this one.
Its motherboard has no expansion slot for adding a graphics card, so you're stick with its wimpy integrated graphics which uses up to 1961 MB of shared memory.
Its slow wimpy processor is soldered to the motherboard and not upgradeable to a faster one.
It has only 4 GB of RAM, but it supports 8 GB, so you do have the option of adding more.

I have had a Compaq Presario 1500 laptop for about 2 years now, and I am quite un-satisfied when it comes to multi-tasking several applications at the same time. Sometimes it is so slow that I cannot minimize a full-screen application to read up on something on the net. The laptop has two ram slots, one of which has been empty since i got the computer. Could I get a gig of ram and still keep the 256y meg stick as an added boost? or is the 1 gig the maximum for both slots?

Well if your laptop supports a maximum of 1gb then that means 512mb per RAM slot.
Here are a few links on Newegg which is the Maximum Memory you could get for your Laptop. This is if you are in USA

I'm trying to reformat my mom's old Compaq Presario SR1303WM. I've set it to boot from the cd-rom and I almost had it. But after deleting the partitions and starting a clean install it would only load the programs to 20%. After that it locked up and wouldn't do anything. I had to shut down and restart.

Now, it won't load from anything. Of course the old OS is gone so it won't start up on the hard drive and it won't boot from the cd. It just keeps going to a black screen with "Error Loading Operating System". Can someone please help me. I know they can't get a new computer and I just want to get a new install on this one to speed it up for them. They had a ton of malware and such on it.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Since HP now owns Compaq, I am not sure what kind of cds you have in order to attempt recovery.
Per HP Support

HP computers that ship with Microsoft Windows XP do not come with recovery CDs. Instead, they use a hidden space (partition) on the hard drive to store the recovery information. The use of a separate partition provides a convenient process that eliminates the use of recovery discs that may be lost or scratched. A system recovery from the hard drive may not be possible in some circumstances. Your computer may contain Recovery Disc Creation software. Recovery discs for Windows XP are available from HP for a minimal cost. See Obtaining Recovery Discs for ordering information.Click to expand...

What kind of disk are you using to attempt restore, and are you using HP's support page?
Are you still set to boot from CD and to attempt to do so FIRST?
Is your BIOS properly identifying your hard drive?
What happens if you unplug the data cable from the hd before trying to boot to cd?
Do you have the "Recovery Console" option at some point during boot?

Hi, how do you restore to factory settings a (COMPAQ PRESARIO SRI617CL)?

If this computer has a Recovery Partition, when you boot the computer on the logo screen you should see a message Press F2 for setup and Press X for Recovery (X being F11 or whatever key it says) If you don't get that message, then this computer does not have a Recovery Partition (if you can still boot the computer you can look in Disk Management to see if there is a drive called Recovery)
Other then that you will need the recovery discs you made when you got the computer. How to Run Compaq Recovery Disk |

Hi this is my first post so bare with me.

I have a compaq presario 2580us laptop first of all with a pentium 4 in it.

My question is this. My laptop has 3 fans in it and they all used to come on in the past. Only one(the biggest) has been working not sure how long it has just been the one either. My temps get up to around 127F. I am just just wondering if there is a way to check out why the other 2 fans are not working. If there is some setting that I could check that would be great. Any assistance would be so nice.

Thank you,

A:Compaq Presario Fans

I did this on a machine at work 2 weeks ago. Check, do the auto detect thing, and update the bios. should solve the problem.

hope it helps.

I have a Compaq Presario C74EM which I just installed Win 8 RP. The sound did not work.

Eventually I was able to find and install drivers - sound still didn't work, but after following the advice on a forum post, I put the computer to sleep, waited a few minutes, woke it up, and sound now works.

This computer came with Win Vista home. Supposedly the Compaq Win7 drivers will work with Win8. Compaq (hp) has utilities that will go through any/all drivers, and update to the latest.

Does anyone know how to get this going under Win 8?

What's the part/product number(P/N) on that Compaq Presario laptop?

You appear to have a CQ61 series model, so we need to confirm which one you have.
There should be a dash and additional characters after CQ61.

My friend has a Compaq Presario 5340, which I might say is being a real pain! She dropped it off to me yesterday to try to fix.
Here is my problem(s): The computer starts up fine until it gets to the Windows98 screen then it hangs. She had stated it was running slow then this problem has surfaced. I have been in the MSconfig and did a selective startup bypassing the Autoexec and config files, as stated by troubleshooters in Win98. I also have used the quick restore cd's that she has and the same thing still happens, it hangs on Win98 screen.
Does anyone have any suggestions or more troubleshooting to do before I boot it out the door? Also have thought about formatting the hard drive to wipe everything out, but I have heard it is difficult to reload programs on Compaq's. I don't have any idea if she has added any new software or hardware to this computer.
Please Help!!!!

A:Compaq Presario 5340: HELP!!!!!

Check the CPU settings in the bios and make sure that the CPU is not running overclocked.
If this is one of those 599lmr motherboard Compaqs, it'll do just what your saying if the CPU is set wrong.

NOPE, can't upgrade that dog to anything that would make a difference. Your manual or their web site should show you the upgrade path and what you can go to.

I have a Compaq Presario 2700T with problems. When I press the start switch it runs for about five seconds and then shuts off. It doesn't even run long enough to give me any screen image. It does this on every attempt to start the computer now. Prior to that it flashed a blue screen on a previous start attempt but not long enough to read what it said.
Any ideas what is going on?

A:Compaq Presario 2700T

Does this happen when the power connector is attached?

Are there any lights on when the power connector is attached? For example, does the battery charge?

Do not be rough with the cable, but the power plug that connects to the laptop, does it make any difference if you gently bend the cable around or move the connector in the socket? (Occasionally over time either the cable becomes damaged or the socket becomes loose)

Related to the problem that I posted about here:, this is a little more urgent. The Compaq will frequently, sometimes regularly lock up: screen freezes, neither mousepad nor keyboard respond, and the harddisk parks the heads. Lately, it locks up when it's on the charger, and then is fine (at least, so it seems) when on battery-power. It's also sensitive to being touched--not bumped, it's that unpredictable. Sometimes, I can move it around without problem, other times, if I even touch it, it freezes.

The fans still run like normal, so I don't think that it's overheating. I'm afraid it's a motherboard issue, which I wouldn't be surprised at, considering that it's about 6 years old.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I have a Compaq Presario 1247 Notebook (laptop) with Windows 98 Second Edition with a 4.3 Gigabyte hard drive that was logically partitioned into 2 drives (C: and D: ). Earlier this year I used my CD Burner to copy all of the Quick Restore files from the D: Drive to a blank CD-ROM (CD-RW) disk and then removed the partition from the hard drive with a program from the Compaq Website. My CD-Burner is connected to my Notebook via a PCMCIA USB 2.0 Card, it has 2 USB Ports on it, one port is being used by my CD-Burner the other port is not being used.

Last Friday (09-24-2004) my Notebook caught a virus while I was on the internet and it was corrupted. MS Windows Explorer error message came up when I tried to look at my hard drive. The error message also came up when I rebooted, therefore no desktop icons appeared. So I reformatted the hard drive C: and put the Quick Recovery CD-ROM Disk in the internal CD-ROM drive. However, the Quick Recovery Disk displayed a message that it could not find the Quick Restore files and to contact Compaq Customer Support. I reformatted my hard drive again this time with the /quick format switch and /make system disk switch and then copied all the files and subdirectories from the Quick Recovery CD to my hard drive. Now before I even tried to run FDISK to repartition my hard drive into 2 logical drives I thought I would put the CD (CD-RW) containing all of the Quick Restore files and subdirectories that I burned earlier this year (before I r... I have a compaq presario c300 notbook. It will not boot. I get the compaq screen, then nothing. It will not boot to the cd either. The backlight comes on, so it's not that. Please help. I'm lost.

A:compaq presario c300

Welcome to TSF....

To get it to boot from the cd you have to change the boot order in BIOS. This can be done during boot up when you can open the BIOS and set it.

The cd you used is it the recovery cd for the computer?

I've searched this site, I've asked HP/Compaq, and I've checked search engines but still don't have an answer, so wondering if I can find it here.
I have a Compaq Presario 700 with what I believe is a dead hard drive. I want to replace it, but not sure if it is necessary to copy the files from the drive first. I don't think it's possible, as the drive doesn't seem to work at all. Can I replace it with a new (upgraded) hard drive and just run the original Windows QuickRestore discs, or is there something more to it that I would need?
Here's what happens: I switch the laptop on and it wants to start up, but then, before Windows is running, the hard drive begins it's lovely scraping and clunking noises and I eventually get a black screen with plain text saying windows had to shut down... and is beginning dump of physical memory. Of course, this all started after some fool (maybe me, maybe not) dropped the laptop.
Every site I've checked says I'll need to create a backup of all files before replacing the hard drive. I didn't have anything on there that I need to save, so am wondering if I can just run the QuickRestore and get back to business as usual.

Right heres a very specific enquiry...

I have a Compaq Presario SR2125UK

Im looking to upgrade the graphics to a BFG 8800 GTS OC 320MB or the 640mb.

First question is can my processor handle it? (Intel Pentium D 915)

I know i have to upgrade the ram so im purchasing 4GB of DDR2 RAM for about £50 and im replacing the PSU probably with an OCZ Stealth 600W PSU. Do that sound viable? Ive only got 32bit windows so i know im loosing out on some ram but its a package deal lol.

I have tried reading into all the requirements for these upgrades such as power connectors from PSU to graphics card and motherboard and think i got a bit lost.

The BFG requires 12v of something which the OCZ provides along with more than enough power (425w required for BFG), plus both the motherboard and the PSU are PCI express compatible. And i have an extra slot to accommodate the doubledecked size of the BFG.

In terms of the required power connectors i was a bit lost. The OCZ said it has a 6/8 PCI express pin which is what the BFG requires but can somebody shed some light on this?

But im really just concerned that it was going to fit and work!

These purchases come to around about £150 so dont want to be thinking for another 100 squid i could have just bought a XBox 360! lol

Basically Im asking advise on the above upgrade decisions and any tips anyone has on installing these?

Any help would be appreciated, im sick of only being able to run pre-2005 games on a pc bought in 2007! I was pretty suc... Read more
