Anniversary Update - Clean Install - First Impressions

Q: Anniversary Update - Clean Install - First Impressions

My first impressions:

Pros:
Seems a bit faster overall - I did a complete system image backup in 00:02:09 (previously took 00:02:35)
OS install uses less space (at least for my installation)
Event viewer shows no new instances (I had two known issues before and they are still there)
Reapplied many of Brinks tutorial suggestions and most of them worked... except this one:

gpedit management notice is missing (second screen shot) so I can't say for sure if it will work (or not).

Cons:
Win10BGChanger1.2.1 still doesn't work (as expected)
Sound removed from notifications by default (not a con for me though)
Installed default audio playback to my headset - changed to speakers
All in all, working well so far (for me).

A: Anniversary Update - Clean Install - First Impressions

I like everything except the removal of being able to skip the lock screen on wake from resume

I have an xps 8700 desktop.
Will windows find most of the drivers?
If I enter my service tag and go to drivers will all the drivers that I need be there?
(I had an old Dell with Windows XP. I did a clean install on it once. I think there was one device that was listed as unknown. I put in the dell driver disk and it install most of the missing drivers I needed, as I recall. But you no longer get disks with Dell computers.)
Is there a place to download a drivers disk?
If I open Macrium Reflex, it shows that there are 5 partitions. One is the c: drive, one is PBR Image, one is wintools (I think). What are the other 2? They must be Dell partitions as I never created any partitions.
I looked up the model number of my harddrive and it appears to be a standard hard drive. Somebody said that there could be a small SSD that is used to help the other drive boot faster. If there was such a drive, wouldn't I see if I opened Optimizer? Or in Macrium Reflect?
The model number of my harddrive is WD10EZEX

A:If I have to do a clean install to Windows 10 Anniversary update...

Macrium just finished the backup, so I just checked and there are 7 partions
1. ESP
2.DIAGS
3. None - unformatted 128/128 (must be a windows thing as my second drive that I added has this too)
4. Winretools
5. OS (C)
6. None- primary 334.2/450
7. PBR Image

First of all, I'm coming from Windows 7. I'm one that was able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free.

Am I able to perform a clean install of Windows 10 using the same license I currently have on Windows 10? How would I obtain my current key, then? Is it s imply the Product ID listed under Control Panel>System ?

Can I download a copy of the installation media which already contains the AU update?

How would I install Windows 10 onto a M.2 drive? Is it as easy as picking the hard drive to install Windows on during setup?

A:How do I clean install Windows 10 Anniversary Update?

You could just use "reset my pc".

Alternatively, create bootable usb stick or dvd

Windows 10

Boot from it, choose custom install, delete all partitions on drive you want to use (backup data first of course), and skip key entry as not needed as you have already upgraded.

I have a problem after installing the Anniversary Update of Windows 10. This post concerns the process which involves a clean re-install of Windows 10 by the method which includes downloading and running Microsoft's Media Creation Tool, choosing "Create Media for another PC". This downloads an ISO of Windows which, when put on a USB stick, can be used to boot the computer and clean-install Windows 10 (no license key required because Windows 10 was already running, although I have my license key.) I am told that this produces a "very clean" install which would clear any glitches in the previous install. Programs would need to be re-installed.

My question please: assuming that the Media Creation Tool will be downloaded after the Anniversary Update was installed, will it produce a Windows 10 + Anniversary Update version ?

Thanks for any help.

PS: I wasn't able to create a Macrium System Image which would include the Anniversary Upgrade because my problem occurred immediately after the Update. If you are interested in what that problem is, go to:

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone else has experienced an icon display issue on their start menu with the 1607 update?

I have just clean installed (and fully updated) the 1607 Anniversary Update on 2 PC's and both are experiencing an identical issue with their start menu. The problem whilst seemingly minor is especially annoying given that I have performed the updates for some friends and it is a matter of pride to me that I hand over any such systems in a perfect state.

The Start Menu program list (A - Z list) as well as the "most used" and "recently added" lists contain icon tiles for the installed programs. On both systems around 25% of these tiles display a generic "blank page" image rather than the icon image associated with that program. That said the tile in question opens it's associated program and it's text label also displays correctly.......as I said earlier an annoying niggle!

By now you are all thinking ah its a icon cache failure just rebuild the icon cache!! I have of course rebuilt the icon cache following the instructions contained in option 2 of the tutorial here www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5645-icon-cache-rebuild-windows-10-a.html as well as deleting the C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\IconCache.db file neither of which corrects the issue.

I would like to do a clean install with WIN 10 Anniversary Update (1607), and convert my disk from BIOS to UEFI.
What modifications would i need to do to GPTgen while upgrading and maintaining my programs and data?

Thanks

A:clean install with anniversary update & disk conversion BIOS to UEFI

Modifications....none.

Windows 10 already utilizes GPT partitioning....on a clean install. The only thing you would need to do is change your BIOS firmware from Legacy BIOS to UEFI BIOS. You will need to confirm that in your BIOS. Or to check with in windows.....in the search bar of cortana, type system information and when the window pops up, scroll down to BIOS mode......here's mine.

Hi,

After updating to Windows 10 Anniversary, my PC got this issue: every programs including Start Menu, Taskbar, Windows Explorer, etc freeze after I log in. I couldn't even log off, turn on task manager using Ctrl+Alt+Del or Ctrl+Shift+ESC. I searched and tried many methods but non has worked unless I roll back to previous build. Then I decided to format the drive and try a clean install to fix the issue.

The clean installation ran smoothly, however after that it always shows the BSOD error with ks.sys message whenever I log in. I haven't install any software or driver yet, except the Nvidia display driver I installed in safe mode.

Felling hopeless now. Please help guys.

A picture is worth a thousand, trillion words. I'll be using them in this post.
My start screen looks like friggin Windows 8!!!

I was hacked a few weeks ago - my desktop and laptop. So I have been working with an Anti-Hacker forum and trying to clean up my data as much as possible, then had to format hard drive and clean install win 10. Man, that takes a very long time. We worked on my desktop for almost a month. It doesn't help that we were trying to cleanup 4GB of disk. Laptop is next.

I've not been having any pleasure time on either of my PCs since July 7,2016. So the last thing I want to do is try to redesign my start screen.
I'm using the enterprise edition of 10 Pro, but I seriously doubt that's going to effect the cosmetics. But I really, really want to start using my PC again for fun and productive things. I honestly don't recall windows 10 EVER looking like this... Anyway, not Win 10 Pro - which is what I'm running.

Who can tell me a magic button to push to get the 'normal' windows 10 start screen back? Remember? Where you click on the Start/Windows key, and some bars display right there, you click on them, and voila - All your installed programs appear?

Thanks all for any help.

And sorry I'm so bitchy. BTW, when they hacked my two PCs, they also cracked my password to my bank and got $1,350 from me. So I am just a wee bit grumpy. I didn't need windows 10 to pull this.

I'll try to keep it short.
I did a clean install of Windows 10 anniversary on a new SSD 240 GB and all the drive detached.
I did it 3 time and now it's 10 days I'm working on it to have an working OS.
The actual problems are:
1) keep freezing both file explorer and Chrome (same with Edge)
2) No crash or BSoD.
3) I "only" have to wait... from 10 second to 1 minute to have the things done.
E.g. menu start: all completely blank and stuck
click on Control panel icon and wait 30 second to have it open
open Chrome and nothing happen (if I click newly after "X" seconds 2 Chrome pages appear)
Taskbar frozen in both monitors
Thumbnail of the taskbar for open app or folder empty and then frozen the bar.
Unresponsive folder
All these problems have a lasting from a few seconds up to a minute.
I've installed by Mediatool X64 via USB with Win 10 Anniversary with no problem at all.
Then I moved using Windows itself the folders Documents, Music, Download, Movie and pictures each one in a partition leaving the folder User including AppData in C:
I also moved to a dedicated partition (my scratch partition) pagefile sys, indexing windows.edb, INetCache, chrome history and I deleted Hiberfile.sys as always.
Every time I changed something, I restart and test all: no problem at all excluding continuous blocks (unresponsive and frozen).
Then I installed Office 2016 and Adobe CC 2015, Calibre, 7Zip, Chrome, Macrium and I did my first full recovery... Read more

Rebooted again -- still swirling dots on black screen. Tried again, same results.
Rebooted with F8 to get original Win 10 back.
Turned on "metered connection" option for WLAN to stop this update from happening. But now I cannot get and security updates for this machine.

Here is the Service Manual: Manual Pages 41-47 show removal of the service bay door and replacement of the hard drive. Just install the SSD in place of the hard drive. You can remove the mSSD drive. It is not useful with a main SSD drive. It was designed only to speed up a regular mechanical drive.  Do you have a Windows 10 installation disk? I am unable to install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, keeps failing after second restart (at around 75%).

Machine is a relatively recent custom build, a little over 12 months old: Gigabyte B85M-HD3 (rev 2) mobo, i5-4460 CPU, Geforce GT 740 2GB GPU, 8GB RAM, Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD. Been running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (1511) with no problems. sfc /scannow gives a clean bill of health. No apparent issues with drivers, Device Manager shows all good.

Tried installing via Windows Update and also via the downloaded Windows 10 Upgrade executable... same result. Everything goes well up until the second restart and then the start screen just hangs with the little circle of dots twiddling around indefinitely - up to 8 hours - and no hard drive activity whatsoever.

The only USB devices connected are my keyboard and mouse. I've tried installing in Clean Boot mode with all startup items and non-Microsoft services disabled... no difference. Tried increasing the size of the System Reserved partition from 350MB to 500MB... no difference. Tried installing while disconnected from the internet... no difference.

Downloaded the Windows 10 1607 ISO (which includes the Anniversary Update) and tried an upgrade install in Clean Boot mode, both with and without internet connection - installation froze at exactly the same place, after the second restart. Received the following error message upon recovering to previous version:

A:Anniversary update won't install - no error code

Hi, download the ISO manually and create a bootable medium (which is useful in various circumstances).
(How - where- see the Tutorial section or search the net- not difficult).

That way you download once and can retry and have it available for other purposes. Also you avoid issues with Windows update.

From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!

Disable any AV. Disconnect any devices you don't need. Uninstall any program that affects or modifies your GUI.

Do a clean boot then try the upgrade using the Win 10 DVD/USB.

If it fails again, you can have a look at the log:
Windows Update logs are now generated using ETW (Event Tracing for Windows).
Please run the Get-WindowsUpdateLog PowerShell command to convert ETW traces into a readable WindowsUpdate.log.

i have sucessfully installed the update Anniversary of windows 10 x32 to my tablet what i have is an nextbook of 7inches which has 16GB of storage and just if try to update will get the message of not enough space to do the update, in this poost will detail how to do the install without die on the attempt. the time that takes in do the update is about 4-6 hours due the low specs of this tablet, can also be for any tablet that has 16GB storage.
Materials to use list
an empty micro SD card of 32-64GB of capacity, i used an micro sd card of 64GB for this procedure.
i say empty because i have tried use an card with files inside and the tool media creator erased all my files so i do emphasis in this
preparation of the SD card memory
in an card reader in another computer download from the Media tool creator the version of windows 10 that your computer use, and use the SD card to store the version of windows from media tool.
i know many tablets has OTG capabilities but have to keep in mind the following.
if your tablet gets the battery charged via an micro USB connector, then you must use the method of do the upgrade by Micro SD card, since the installation will take 3-6 hours so need keep the tablet powered and plugged to the wall socket all the time , if ran the set up by battery will get no power in no time and will brick your tablet forever, or in the best of the chances will get back automatically to the wind... Windows 10 Anniversary Update Might Hide Partitions After Install

One of the issues experienced by users after installing the Windows 10 Anniversary Update concerns partitions, as many of those who upgraded their computers reported that a number of partitions disappeared from File Explorer.

Furthermore, all partitions show up as RAW in Disk Management, which makes most people believe that all their data has been removed and nothing can be recovered.

Microsoft, however, claims that this is just a bug discovered in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update install system, and while no files are lost, it?s critical for users not to try to recover anything with third-party apps because this could lead to completely breaking down the partitions and removal of data.

?Microsoft is aware of this issue and is working on a solution to be released through Windows Update. Any data you have stored on the affected partition is still there. We recommend that you not try to recover or otherwise write data to the affected partition, nor should you format the partition,? the company says.

You can also downgrade in the meantime
Microsoft?s Sharath Srinivasa goes on to explain that a patch will be released to users when it?s available and states that users who do not want to wait for it can always downgrade to their previous Windows version. Partitions should be then just as you created them, with all files once again accessible.

For the moments, there?s still no timing on wh... Read more

This box came with windows 7 64 bit Home OS.  I recently upgraded to the windows 10 OS in order to take advantage of the latest OS.  Around August the windows 10 anniverary update became available but upon attempting multiple times it have failed.  I receive a 0xc1900200 error and a reference to the system reserved partition not being big enough.  I don't seem to see a partition called System Reserved partition but have tried to expande what looks like a 100 MB SRP, using Partition Magic.  It doesn't let me change this 100 MB partition.  The PC runs fine but because of MS auto updates, which I need to keep other MS software up to date, I get regular failures of the Anniversary update release.

Hello,I recently purchased a new 2016 model Spectre x360 (PN X7V20UA). It came running Windows 10 1511, and I would like it to be running 1607 (Anniversary Update). However, the update to 1607 is not being offered inside of Windows Update. I've installed everything that was available, include today's November patch releases, to no avail. Windows Update shows "Your device is up to date." This link http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/10/hps-new-spectre-x360-is-probably-the-best-pc-laptop-around/ says that the 1607 update is being blocked on this model temporarily due to driver compatability issues. I tried to get confirmation from HP twitter support about if this was true or not, but wasn't able to get much help. Can someone please confim this?

I have tried multiple times times to install the Windows 10 Pro, Anniversary Update to my desktop computer, a Dell Inspiron 560. Every time, the result has been a computer that will not start-up, ie. Windows does not appear to load/run. I have tried the WURepair tool and tried to repair the System Registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Windows NT>ProfileList, all to no avail. I have had to restore my system with an previous Image to get it operational again. Has anybody else had this problem and been able to come up with an answer?

A:Trouble trying to install Windows 10 Anniversary Update, version 1607

Hello JRAllen72653 Welcome to the Ten Forums!

One advice I can provide here would be to try a different method for either update by upgrade or planned clean install which doesn't seem to be what you have been looking for. When the Redstone 1 update didn't even arrive here for 3 separate desktops as well as a recently new laptop where 10 came already on not seeing the update still lead to fail of the MC Tool to see the immediate online upgrade take place or create the usb media needed.

Twin solutions were then sought! The first in order to see all machines updated was to download the "windows.iso" by way of the MC Tool which equals both the 32bit and 64bit flavors for both the Home and Pro editions. We call that a "4 in 1" type of download that covers everyone.

The second item on the agenda did opt to use a 3rd party program not the Windows option to mount the iso downloaded onto each machine or run from a flash drive where the setup.exe main executable would be manually started to watch each upgrade install take place. Once all systems were set which included one desktop only lately being upgraded from 7 Home Premium to 10 Home and then still waiting for the update to go on before return to owner was to visit a MS download iso type page to grab both the 32bit and 64bit smaller Dual Edition iso downloads to keep onhand.

For a final fix to all older already made up flash drives for the Threshold 2 update last November as well as for Windows Insider P... Read more

Hi,
I have a Packard Bell OneTwo S3221. It came factory installed with W7.

I upgraded to W10 last year after difficulty - upgrading to W10 via Windows update would not work, kept installing to a certain percentage then would reboot to a blank screen and freeze indefinitely, I needed to power off then on restart it would roll back to W7. This happened repeatedly despite trying all sorts - clean boots, uninstalling antivirus and updating drivers, etc.

I finally installed W10 using Media creation tool. Everything ran fine. But when the big update came in Novmember 2015 that failed to, in the same way as above, however all other monthly windows updates install fine.

Windows update never tried to push the Nov 2015 update on me again - I'm still on build 10240 now.

I was prompted to install the anniversary update by Windows update last week but that also failed in the same way as above. Download ok and begins installing fine, then at some point after 50% complete I get the blank screen indefinitely and have to power off, then it reverts back to W10 build 10240.

Having checked Packard Bell website my model is not supported by Packard Bell for W10, and they are not providing any drivers for it. This may explain the problems.

Can anyone suggest how to find out what the problem is and if there is a solution? I've tried looking in Update history for error codes, but there is none, it doesn't even show an attempt to install the anniversary update. Like i said every other ... Read more

A:Can't install Windows 10 Anniversary update, stuck on build 10240

Hi, simplest answer is avoid windows update and create the appropriate bootable medium or iso and use it as you did before.
As you know plenty of people have this sort of problem.

Note that the upgrade can introduce new issues for some (search the net), and some are delaying because of that. Older machines like yours could well exhibit such problems. So before you make this change, I recommend you create a disk image of your existing setup - a procedure you should do routinely anyway- to give another way of restoring your system.
E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage for images.

It's best to have a physical bootable medium as it covers all of:
a. if you need to repeat the installation
b. as a bootable medium for recovery options
c. in case you need to do an in-place upgrade repair install

without taking up disk space.

Hi,
I have Dell Vostro 1220 and the existing hard drive has started to fail. I had W10 enterprise running as a clean install for over six months.
I got a new SSD drive and decided to use the Dell W7 (64 bit) re-install DVD to put back a clean install of W7. After the install tried to run Update Windows from the control panel but it reported could not upgrade after trying for twenty minutes. Somewhere on the forum it suggested installing SP1 and all will be well. Done another clean install without the internet connection and when finished I installed SP1.

Connected to the internet but still can't get any updates. Followed various threads suggesting running scripts which all ran and did not report any problems. Still no updates.

It was suggested there might be a virus, but it was a new drive and the SP1 file has been run before without problems.

Cannot seem to move any further.

Would appreciate some help!

Did a clean istall of Windows 7 Starter on a friend's Acer One Aspire. The OS was succssfully installed and activated and it is genuine. Trying to upgrade IE 8 to IE 10 or 11. When using IE, in most instances, it keeps giving a message that the browser is outdated.

Have tried to download IE 10, and it mentions a "Delay Start", and the download never shows up anywhere, even though it says 'Thank you for downloading'.
IE 11 does not mention the "Delay Start", but the download never shows up either, and it also gives thanks for downloading.

Also trying to download Windows Updates, and that has turned into a hair-graying experience.
However, will go one at a time, and start with upgrading IE 8.

Thanks for your assistance!

At this point it's simpler to reinstall from recovery partition than test a lot of possibilities absent a probable solution--unless for some weird reason I'm going to run into the same problem.

I've recently done a clean install of Windows Vista on a laptop (Home premium) and a desktop (Business) I only have an old installation disk that comes with no service pack preloaded, so I manually installed SP1 and SP2 on both systems. That all went quite
well, until I wanted to run Windows Update to install the additional updates. On both systems, Windows Update just keeps searching for updates for hours without any result. On the laptop, I was at least able to install the latest version of Windows Update,
but after that update, it still kept searching without any result. I've already tried to run a FixIt for Vista found on https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058  , but it turns out Microsoft doesn't provide FixIts anymore. Instead, I apparantly
have to run a EasyFix .diagcab troubleshooter, but that doesn't seem to work on Vista. Is there anything else I could do to make it work?

2) Store keeps downloading apps I have purposely uninstalled, it seems to be acting more like adware than a mature operating system I really don't want games downloaded onto my system especially without my express permission.

After a fresh SP1 install, there are +100 windows critical updates. I'm guessing if you install those from 2013, then those from 2012 may disappear from the list. Am i right?

A:After clean SP1 install, which update i SHOULD NOT download?

In my experience, Windows Update takes care of that well. It will offer you only what is pertinent to your system.

Some of the offerings are optional and some are more critical than others. If you do the 2013 updates and it still offers you some from 2012, I'd accept them, particularly if they were marked critical or important, rather than optional.

A:Clean install - Which drivers should I update?

If Windows and/or Windows Update brought you drivers that are working, I would let them alone. If you don't think something is working as expected, look for updated drivers. Typically, on a laptop, if Windows Update brings down the drivers, I leave them alone. On a tower, especially one used for gaming, I always update the video drivers.

When I ask windows to check for updates nothing happens ... the green just moves through the bar ... I even waited over night allowing it to check, put still nothing happen. I tried several different things. I went into msconfig and checked hide all Microsoft services under the services tab and disabled all ... nothing.
I went to this microsoft page to manually reset Windows Update components and followed the instructions but still no go ... https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058 Some of the dll failed to load ...'gpkcsp' slbcsp' 'wuaueng1' wucltui' muweb' and some loaded but stated the dll regsrv was not found. Like 'gmgr' browseui . It stated to skip step 4 if the first time, but since it didn't work I tried step 4 ... when I entered the first command to back up the systemroot I got an 'access is denied' ... I opened the cmd prompt as administrator. I also installed the latest update agent still no go.
I downloaded and install some updates manually ... KB3161664 ... KB3020369 ... KB3145739 and KB976902 ... and Microsoft.NET Framework 4.5.2 still no go. Any ideas ... This is the FX8120 system.

A:Clean install of Windows 10 Ann update

Hi, Cortana's search of your files is limited to what's indexed. Others have found this problematical and limited.
Conclusion: ignore it.

Explorer search is better, but slow when not indexed.

Far faster are two tools:
a. Everything by Void Tools
b. Locate32 - which I use

Both very quickly create an index of all your files and folder names, and give 'find-as-you-type" results.
I prefer the older Locate 32 'cos its GUI supports so many ways of specifying the extent of the search more intuitively and conveniently, whereas Everything requires typing strings e.g. to specify searching only a drive or folder.

Both free.

Really it's hardly worth uninstalling the default apps- they don't create a significant overhead, and will be replaced on each major upgrade or if you did an in-place upgrade repair install, for example.

Hi - I was able to install Office 2003 Small Business Edition (upgrade version) without any apparent problems on a machine that had a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit (from Win XP).

I expected it to trigger Windows update to download various updates and service packs but it didn't. I went to Windows Update and had it check for updates and it didn't find any.

I tried the check for updates link from the Microsoft Office webpage but that just pointed me back to the Windows Update program.

I tried the change, then repair options from the Program Uninstall or Change Window. It worked without error but still no updates.

How do I get Windows 7 to recognize that Office needs to be updated?

Any help would be most appreciated -

This is a general question. I've done a clean install of Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I'm facing 196 updates. This is the third time I've done the clean install in 2 days because of the update situation. It hangs up for 6-7 hours, or until I lose patience, and the updates just don't happen, and my event viewer is full of red errors.

So, here's my question(s). Can I download these updates in batches? Are there updates that are better to download first? If so, which should I download/install first? I'm thinking that I should download Sp1 for x64-based systems first and then break the rest of them into groups of 10. I would have tried this already but I'm not sure if Windows wants specific updates first or not.

I tell y'all. After this being my third attempt since Monday evening to do this, computing is losing its charm.

Thank you,

Luminoisty

Hi all,

As the title says, I am not able to preform Windows Update.

So a little bit of background. Over the week I purchased a new 500GB SSD as my old 120GB SSD had reached it's capacity.

I threw in the new SSD and installed Windows 7 SP1 64bit via a legit DVD + key I purchased last year. Installation went smoothly, and I followed with install my mobo drivers, graphics card drivers, and Google Chrome.

Next step was to update Windows, so I launched Windows Updater and clicked check for updates. From there it never stopped checking. I left it alone for 20 min and nothing.

So I decided to consult with the internet. I tried Microsoft's own Fix It tool, and the results told me that there was an error code 0x8024402c.

I did more googling, and found a fix that was working for some people that involved the LAN settings in IE and running the net stop/start wuauserv command. Still nothing.

Eventually my computer told me there were some updates ready to be installed. I was a bit confused, but I shut of my computer to allow the install to start. It took almost an hour to shut down. Then I powered back on and the configuration of the updates started. It stayed at 0% for a long time and then finally failed and reverted back, which also took a ton of time. I gave up and went to bed.

Today I formatted the SSD and started over. Installed W7, drivers, chrome, went to start updates, and still nothing.

I actually just got a message from the action center now saying I have updates rea... Read more

Hi there
Fortunately I'd backed up my system - but W8.1 Enterprise update has MISLEADING instructions.
If you run the setup from OUTSIDE windows the iso) (I.e boot and choose CUSTOM ) it tells you to run the setup again FROM WITHIN WINDOWS.

THen there's no upgrade path -- you can save personal files but that's it -- brand new install.

So disappointed - but have restored by old image.

Maybe W8.1 pro will upgrade but 8.1 Enterprise seems to force a new install. -- I'm sure "Enterprise customers" will just like that especially if they've just installed W8.1 a few months ago.

If there is a way to upgrade an existing W8.1 enterprise system to the new version without doing a complete re-install please post.

(Note ENTERPRISE --not PRO).

You could try fiddling with cversion.ini.

i have a old dell demension 3000 desktop, recently it was struck with a couple viruses (pc antispyware 2010)

i saved all my files and decided to do a clean install.

a couple drivers were missing:

Network Adapter
Ethernet controller
Multi Media Controller
Video Controller (VGA)

i couldn't get online so i plugged in a USB wireless adapter to try and get online to download these drivers. (BTW the att modem is attached to this computer.)

i tried updating each driver and it just searches and comes up with nothing. So i went to the Dell site and looked up which drivers to DL, i DL them and it just saves to my desktop as a application file.

i'm not sure what to do now, i'm stuck!

much appreciated

Hi Guys

Ive just done another clean install of Home Premium x64 the third one in two days, and cannot get any windows updates, just hangs on searching for updates, no error code doesn't even time out.
The first time I thought it was a corrupt install so tried again same thing. Today i downloaded my saved iso from one drive and re applied to a new usb and bugger me still cant get any updates to filter through apart from the update for windows update.
Anyone else having the same issues, all I can think of is the servers are overloaded with windows 10 updates.
Gone back to 10 for now but would be interested to hear from others.

Cheers Danny

A:Clean Install Is Windows Update on Strike

I have the same issue with Vista.

Have seen a couple of reports of it on recent installs of win7 as well.

Apparently might be connected with intel sata drivers. Not sure why that would be, but it's worth a try.

See if you can update yours using iata_enu.exe

Hello all.
Running windows 10 pro 64 bit.
I've updated from Version 1511 to the anniversary update, 1607.
Or at least, I thought I did.
The update went well, no hiccups, no errors. Used windows update, let it downloaded and install and rebooted. Alas, system still shows OS Version 1511.
Used update again, same thing, rebooted, 1511.
Went to the windows site, downloaded the windows10upgrade9252.exe, ran it, same exact issue, rebooted, still showing version 1511.
Error logs show no issues. Disabled all external drives, turned off anti-virus, etc, repeated, rinsed, rebooted, still version 1511.
Only think I've not done is burned an ISO to DVD and updated from that.
Any clues as to what's going on?
Thanks!

After carrying out a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate using original media (No SP1), installing relevant drivers for the PC and activating Windows without any problem I then tried to setup the updates. At this point the system informed that the Update
Service wasn't running and I should restart. However, I checked the Services and it was running. I even Stopped it and Restarted it. No improvement. Restarted PC - no joy. I couldn't even install updated by manually downloading them - just got a message that
'a catastrophic' error had occurred. I then did a clean install using a DVD that had the SP1 included. Exactly the same problem - No access to any updates. In addition Windows Defender has same error - It opens but says the service isn't running (When it is).
A Microsoft Technician has tried to remotely solve the problem but he had as much luck as me.
I need to use windows 7 as I have several pieces of hardware, and some software that won't operate with Windows 10, yet I'm stuck with a system that refuses to set itself up correctly.
Problems like this seem to be increasing with Windows 7.

I finally received my W7 Home Premium.

Just thought you would like to know.

I installed it to an Unallocated space ( Disk 0, Partition 1 ) and without
using any " Tricks " it installed the first time perfectly.

I installed it as if it was a full copy. Entered the Key when first ask,
Selected yes to updates, etc. It completed and activated the first time.

It only 20 minutes for the initial install ( not including reinstalling programs
and drivers etc.)

The point is that it installed exactly like a full version without using any
of the several install methods which I thought I would have to use.

The only things unique are that I installed to an unallocated partition and
the only other operating system installed was W7 RTM on another partition.

To beat that Windows set up the dual boot for both systems the first time.

I have since completed this Clean Install without any errors at all. It could not have been smoother. Of course I did have all the updated programs and drivers needed before I started and had tested them all on the RTM version.

Makes me wonder why all the hoopla.

Hope this helps someone.
Richard

A:Clean install using Update Disk Worked Perfectly

Congrats,

This is how installations normally go, preparation procedures, hardware, drivers, and software checks insure no issues.

By far most installations will go easily. The causes for issues and errors are due to many different reasons. Be prepared is the best advice.

Since this is a Windows 7 information and help forum, we see a lot of installation issues.
This information can be used by anyone before they start the Win7 installation.

Hope the information you found here helped you.

It's good to hear of the success stories.

I recently received the 10586 update from Microsoft and installed it. Since this was a major update, I'm wondering if I'm better off performing a clean install to reduce possibility of any issues and clutter.

I have a Dell Lattitude E7440 that I performed a clean initial install of Win 10 on. I then cloned the hard drive and copied it to a new SSD.

Thanks,

A:Clean Install Win 10 build 10586 or update sufficient?

I do not believe this will cause clutter as when you originally upgraded to Windows 10. As far as issues hard to say, some do and some do not. If did this clean install need ISO of this build or if a reset will work as good. I like idea of clean install and have done this myself with ISO of 10586 without doing it through Windows update. Up to you if have any issues then do this, for now you should be o.k.

I'm about to do a clean install of windows 7 professional 64bit. I hope to avoid going through the endless cycles of updates that are required to get the system current. Usually a clean install would be followed up several rounds of updates via windows update. These require multiple restarts and sometimes update A needs to be downloaded and installed before update B can be applied.

I remember reading that it was possible to manually download and install one update that would take care of most updates in one go. Not sure if this is possible, but I remember reading something about it and bookmarking the website. Unluckily my computer crashed and I had to reinstall my system and I have no idea where I saw that article, nor do I have any idea what any of the technical terms are - that means I wouldn't even know what to type into the search bar if I wanted to use google.

Does any one have an idea of what I'm talking about, or do I need to provide more information? Again, I'm looking to do a clean install and then quick update of windows 7 professional. I think when I install it I won't even have service pack 1.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I have an ASUS laptop that used to have Win7 Premium Home Edition SP1 installed. It came pre-installed with the OS, and the HDD had 2 partitions. I decided to re-install the OS clean.
I first removed the 2 partitions and created a single big one.
Then I installed Win7 after formatting the partition.
Everything went well until I tried to do a Windows Update that didn't seem to go through.
I even ran the Microsoft Diagnostic tool which gave me error 0x8024402c.

I have tried many websites & forums' suggestions, even reinstalled the OS several times, even installed another flavor of Win7. Same issue.

I am attaching the logs in case you can find the culprit.

Thanks in advance for your help!

***I KNOW ITS OBVIOUS BUT I SPENT ALL MY MORNING LOOKING THROUGH FORUMS AND A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE MISLEADING TO MAKE YOU BELIEVE THAT IT CAN BE DONE*** For all of you wondering if you can get the 14.99 update and download the ISO and burn it on a DVD or USB and then install it on a different computer or on a fresh hard drive, BEWARE, because the updated version REQUIRES you to have a legit copy of Windows 7, on your hard drive in order to install the Windows 8 update, if you don't there is no work around, Windows 8 will install but will not activate unless you enter a valid retail key, It will state that the key that you have is a upgrade key and that a valid copy of windows must be on your hard drive before installing Windows 8. HAPPY UPGRADING!

A:Do not install update version of Windows 8 on a clean hard drive

There is a registry key hack that you can use to activate it.

With that said, don't cheat the system...it's you don't qualify for the 14.99 upgrade, don't buy it.

To TSG Smart Guys:

I'm still having a problem clean-installing, or installing at all, the Zone Alarm 6.0.667 Free Firewall update on my computers (running Windows XP SP2 updated).
I tried all the solutions recommended by members earlier, and by the ZA tech support website, but no luck.

However, the last try I made I noticed that the saved update read
"Publisher: Unknown".

The previous Zone Alarm updates read
" Publisher: Check Point Software Technologies Inc."

I did a web search and also found out that when I got the message at install that "Zone Labs 6.0.667 000 exe is not a valid Win32 application" that there are 3 probable reasons.

1. The downloaded file had a problem or may be corrupted(recommended downloading again).

2. I may be trying to install a 62-bit update to a 32-bit computer (I have a 32-bit).

3. The appropriate application has not been installed in my computer.

In the 2 years I've used Zone Alarm Free Firewall, this is the first time it required a clean-install for updates.

Questions:

1. Could the unknown publisher be the problem?

2. Is there a way I can fix the publisher problem to allow install (if that is the reason)?

3. Will re-downloading the update file fix the problem? (I use dial-up, so the process is slow)

4. Could there be an application problem, even though I've been using ZA for years?

I will appreciate any feedback from you to help me solve this.

Thanks

You might want to also look at the Security section under the Advanced tab in Internet Properties to see if you may have locked out the installation by demanding signed programs, etc.

WIMBoot would be nice to have as well, if there's a way to do it without making things too complicated.

A:Clean install Windows 8.1 Update 1 on Secure Boot system?

Use Rufus to create a UEFI USB Install media. Since you don't have an Optical drive you'll have to do it from another computer to get the ISO off your Install DVD Or download the ISO Using your Retail Key. You may need to turn off secure boot? You'll need to insure that the USB Thumb Drive Boots UEFI, otherwise its a straight up Clean Install.

Among the Patch Tuesday updates of August 2014, IIRC, KB2976897 was one of the problematic security updates. I just did a clean install of Windows 7 x64, and KB2976897 is being offered as an update. In checking MS support MS14-045 there is no notice of withdrawal, or replacement. Can someone confirm that KB2976897 is good to go. I ask out of an abundance of caution. :-)

I don't recall any specific problems with this patch - and as far as I can see it's not been updated since release- although there were reports in the scaremongers, Iif I remember right the problems were ascribed in the end to prior infections.
It shouldn't cause any problems.

To All Members:

I use Zone Alarm Free Firewall 5.5.094 and have had no problems with past updates.

This most recent update (6.0.677) "highly recommends" a clean-install, but when I click it, I get a "picture" of the clean-install or upgrade button options, but it's only a picture so when I click the buttons, they don't work, not even for canceling or closing the window.

I went back and clicked the "download update 6.0.667". I downloaded to a file, but when I attempted to install, I got the message that is not a "valid Win32 application".

Questions:

Does the clean-install in fact apply to the free update, or does it apply to the purchased products?

Is there a tool or option I can use to allow me to clean-install, or even update for that matter, the 6.0.667 version?

Again, I've had no problems in the past, until now.

I will appreciate your feedback.

Hi,

I have recently done a clean Windows XP Install followed by installing Service Pack 1 then 3.

Everything was running smoothly and I was able to log into the desktop.

However when I tried to check for updates via Windows update, in Internet explorer however it always says the 'Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage'

After diagnosing the issue, it found no problems.

I can browse any other website but sometimes when I click on an item through doing a google search, it sometimes sends me to a random search engine page!!

I then installed spybot, fully updated it however it showed nothing in the scan results.

I think that my browser maybe hijacked because when I opened internet explorer today, a webpage immediately loaded up with the address:

http://chinabytemail.com/search.php

Sometimes Eset Smart Security reports that addresses have been blocked and I have attached a screenshot of the message it displays.

I have attached a hijackthis log below.

Hi,

I had this computer since 2011. Recently, i got my new INTEL SSD harddrive. Did a clean windows 7 installation and ran all the windows updates and updated the drivers. I also updated the bios to the latest version 3602. Since then, windows has been giving me random freeze from time to time. It just happened again as I was typing this.

I thought maybe the latest bios might be the cause of the random freeze. So i downgraded the bios back to what i had been using for the past 3 years which was 1502. But the random freeze still occurs. There is no BSOD. Just hard freeze. Keyboard has got no lights. Caplocks and num locks doesn't response. My razer mouse blue led is still on though. Audio will go into indefinite loop.

Windows event viewer gave the Kernel-Power event ID 41. I don't think a dump file is created when it freeze. I tried leaving my computer on throughout the night without touching it and it froze and restarted twice last night. I can't find the root cause to the problem. No overclock. I had also tried cleaning the contact points for the ram and graphic card. Is it because the new SSD is not compatible with motherboard or is the PSU not sufficient to support 5 hdds in total or is there any other underlying reason which can be found in the attached files.

Please help. Thanks in advance

Basically my old HDD died from bad sectors and I had to format and install Windows 7 Enterprise on a back up hdd that was flooded with useless documents from the past.

Went ahead done what I had to do and left Windows to check for updates, Steam install some games and League of Legends update.

However everything finished but Windows was still checking for updates and I noticed the svchost.exe (netsvcs one) uses about 1.5 GB out of 4 RAM. Immediately knew that this was caused by the Windows Update service that's under it.

However turning Windows Update off is never a smart thing to do and I don't have the kind of time to manually download updates.

I know that it will probably blast me with 200+ updates (has happened in the past but never used up so much RAM and finished way faster than 6 hours with all my usual post installation stuff.

Anyways some info you should probably know:
-I'm using a Wireless adapter (TP-LINK TL-WN722N) and I have read threads here that Windows Update would sometimes fail to do what it should with Wireless adapters, unfortunatelly that isn't an option at the moment.
-Resetting Windows Update manually and through Fix It doesn't work.

So first thing I'm looking at is updating the Windows Update client, please do tell if you think otherwise, or if not link me to the newest Windows update client or probbably any hotfixes that could fix the problem (never done this before and wouldn't want to mess up, so I decided to ask you guys )

I have tried everything I can think of including: Unplugging all extra SATA drives except my main SSD, unplugging my wireless network adapter, unplugging all USB devices (even mouse and keyboard), removing old drivers and updating outdated ones, and installing the update through a USB flash drive. Downloads, prepares, reboots and then, at about 14% of first step, it shows the thermometer gauge and shuts down.
When I power it on, it reverts to previous version of windows
I've tried it plugged in, plugged out, waiting a few minutes shutdown before starting in updating mode...
I don't know what to do

I don't know what to do the thermometer gauge represents your surface pro is getting overheated and in order to prevent heat damage to the core hardware the device/bios shuts down your device. so first we need to fix the overheating issue and then can you continue with the update.

Hi,

I just downloaded and installed the Windows 10 Anniversary Update yesterday and so far I have noticed some changes in my computer that I was not aware of before the update.

(1) Somehow my System Restore was set to Disabled and all of my restore points are now gone and

(2) All of my Microsoft Update History is also missing.

Could the update be the cause of both?

Thanks and regards,

A:Update History missing after Win10 Anniversary Update

Yes, the update is the cause of both.

Major version upgrades like this change so much functionality, they often have to reset various settings to default so that they are in a known good state. Unfortunately, many have complained about the System Restore option being reset to Disabled (this is the Windows default).

As for your previous restore points, that's to be expected. You can't restore to a previous restore point on a previous OS version. All the baseline files are different, and you would be restoring settings for the old OS if you were to somehow be able to restore it.

Think of it like a Bookmark or favorite, but they've moved the location to a different URL. Restoring the old favorite only points you to somewhere that doesn't exist anymore.

As for #2, your update history is gone because again, it's a fresh OS, and previous updates are all integrated into the OS now, not patches. Those old updates don't apply to the new OS anymore.

Strange things are happening here on my W10x86 Pro system, and I am worried...

After being shut down for some time, I turned on this computer yesterday Monday, and it finished configuring some updates that it had apparently installed last time I shut it down. When shutting it down on Monday evening, it again goes into installing updates, but looking like it was stuck on 0%. After an hour I just let it sit over night, and this morning it had shut down. Then today when I turn it on in the afternoon, it goes into configuring a big update, before booting up, taking close to 30 minutes and restarting three or four times, showing me this screen
http://blogs-images.forbes.com/anton...w10-update.jpg that I have never seen before.

After the half hour it tells me that it has updated my W10 and there are lots of new exciting things. Naturally I thought that this was the Anniversary Update, so I looked into the Update History, and to my surprise this was entirely empty. "No updates installed yet", it told me.

Then I manually clicked "Check for new updates", and then it finds lots of updates, like "Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 (KB3176493)" and a whole bunch of other updates all numbered with 1511.

I am baffled here... what goes on?

Performed a fresh Windows install on a new OCZ-TRION100 (SSD). Now, when I go to run Windows Update it stalls on "Checking for updates" message and never progresses. Most processes that use windows update are also failing. I have tried several different methods to fix this with no success yet.

I've cleared the SSD and freshly reinstalled Windows 7 more times than I can count in the pursuit of a fix. Each time I reinstall, I delete all partitions using the windows install disk interface. I run BIOS once the SSD is entirely un-allocated space. I attempted most of these fixes in either IDE or AHCI mode with varying results. Yet ultimately the problem persists.

I would post the Windows update error code, but since it never proceeds past "checking" and never stops "checking" unless stopped through CMD; I receive no legitimate error code or error message.

Attempt A:
Ran SFC Scan successfully. It came up with no errors. Rebooted, yet problem persists...

Attempt B:
Ran the Update Readiness Tool. The first time I ran it; it installed the hotfix successfully. Rebooted, and it says "configuring upda... Read more

Used auto patcher to download the bulk of my initial updates. now with most of them downloaded, windows update does not take days to search. Thanks to these forums for finding that solution.

I've been attempting to get Windows 7 up and running on my Asus F8Sp-X1 laptop for a couple of days now. It came with Vista, which only lasted as long as it took to take the disk image with True Image, after which XP was installed. It's been that way ever since, and it runs perfectly... but everyone knows the limits of XP now since the security updates have stopped.

Since I have an unused product key for 7, I thought that would be a better choice than the Vista the laptop came with. I've never used Vista, but it is widely held that 7 is leaner and faster, and on a 3gb laptop, that seems the better choice.

The DVD that corresponds with the product key I have is of the 64-bit edition (OEM), so I plugged that product key into the MS web site and downloaded the 32 bit Win 7 SP1 DVD ISO, then created the disc.

I had already restored the original Vista setup from the image I made all those years ago, and had allowed it to update up to SP2. I started the CD and selected an in-place upgrade, which (though painfully slow) worked without any errors.

After fooling around with the fingerprint sensor for a while (finally I did get it working), I went to Windows Update to download all of the fixes that came after SP1. It never finished searching for updates... just goes on and on, with no errors and no results.

I went to the MS support site and tried the fix it tool. It claimed to have fixed things, but the problem persisted. I did a lot of reading... I tried the WURT, but it j... Read more

Hello all...

Befuddling problem as I am pretty tech savvy but for whatever reason I can not get windows update to quite "checking" for update:

So far....

1) Downloaded SURT, ran fulling with no reported errors

2) Ran SFC with no reported errors

3) Get no windows update error codes...it just runs and runs and runs with no results

4) CBS.zip attached.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
