Q: X1 Yoga 2016 Depot repair service or request repla...

I am a 5 year owner of an X220 that still runs strong. I wanted something bigger and lighter. I ordered 2015 model X1 (non-yoga)... it had a poor FHD display screen (fuzzy text, don't get FHD instead get the QHD) and had issues resuming from sleep. Lenovo sent me a replacement, had same issues, I sent both back. No issues with the return process, very easy and free because they were defective. Now, I ordered a 2016 X1 Yoga because I want to be awesome and show off my touch screen 360degree swivel to cute girls in my class. The QHD display is amazing, looks just like a macbook pro retina display. I close the lid or put the laptop to sleep mode, open the lid, it turns on with blank screen and beeps 4 beeps three times (Everytime I sleep it). I have to manually hold power button to restart laptop. Nice! Also, sometimes the display driver crashes and gives a prompt telling me that it crashed. Another thing is that sometimes when I put it in tablet mode and back to laptop mode, it thinks its still in tablet mode. Other than these issues I've noticed within one day of using it.. no idea what else is yet to come lol... the laptop is so so so awesome, for reals. That said, should I send it into Lenovo Depot for repair service or get a replacement? I've read bad reviews on the depot service on this forum. At the same time, I don't want Lenovo to send me another defective laptop as was my experience with my X1 (non-yoga). What should I do?

I noticed after my laptop came back from the service depot the first attempt at the repair that most of the screws that hold it together had been replaced with Philips head screws.  One of the original star screws was still installed.  Also the cover around the keyboard seems to be looser and I could see under it from the side.  Also the change in screw appears to have made several dents in the surface of the laptop.  I appear the new screws are either too long or were over driven.  I would not expect my laptop to be damaged while in the depot for repair. I first sent my laptop into the depot May 31, 2016.  It came back with a new hard drive, running windows 10 in safe-mode, and still had the same freezing/shutting down problems.  It also had new screws and new dents near the touch pad from the new screws.  The night I received the laptop and tried using it with the same problems I sent it in for the first time, I called Lenovo service to send it back in.  That was June 8, 2016.I sent is back to the depot on June 14, 2016.  On June 26 the update on the order was that the broken part was not in stock.  Then July 8 I asked Lenovo support what was going on and they informed me the new part would arrive July 11 and they would expedite the repair and shipping.  Overall not a terrific experience.I want to be clear, the under manufacturer?s warranty laptop should only be returned in good working order in the same or ... This is absurd. I've been waiting over four weeks for a simple call-back from a case manager to complete a repair. I've contacted their service number at least 7 times since then, and each time they've instructed me to "wait for a call within the next 24 hours." Is this typical?!

A:I've been waiting 4 weeks for a depot repair

Sorry to hear this - I'd like to try to help.
Could you send me a PM with your name, contact info (including best phone to reach you) and the system type & serial number (if you have it) or any service case numbers where you sent it in so that we can find out what is going  on and get it resolved.
Thanks for speaking up!

In December 2009, I bought an Acer Aspire M5810 desktop from Best Buy in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In June 2010, my "cold boot" sequence (boot from power OFF) failed; I would receive the error message "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". Thereafter, I could press [ctrl]+[alt]+[del], i.e. "warm boot" and Windows 7 would load successfully. However, I was dissatisfied with this "solution" and on June 6, 2010, I entered into an exchange of email with Acer tech support.

The timeline of events then goes like this...
June 6, 2010: Begin exchange of troubleshooting email and telephone help with Acer Tech Support
June 8, 2010: Acer authorized me to ship computer back for warranty repairs
June 14, 2010: I shipped my computer to Acer Canada
June 16, 2010: Acer Canada received my computer
June ??, 2010: Acer Canada shipped my computer to Acer USA in Temple, Texas
June 21, 2010: Acer USA shipped my computer back to Acer Canada
June 24, 2010: Acer Canada received my computer
June 29, 2010: Acer Canada shipped my computer to me
June 30, 2010: I received my computer in Winnipeg, Manitoba

Upon receiving my computer back, the cold boot issue was fixed. Acer's Temple, Texas depot included a diagnostics report letter that said Acer USA had replaced the Hard Disk Drive, Video Adapter, BIOS update, and reinstalled the Operating System.

But, when I started to check things out, I noticed the HDD... Read more

When the user tries to login into their laptop whether cabled into our domain network or not, they receive a message "there are currently no logon servers available to service this request".  but if cabled into the network and they wait 5 minutes, they
are able to sign in without issue but it takes 2 to 3 minutes to load the page.  I signed into the laptop with my domain admin account and received the same message as the user, but when we tried cabled in (5 minutes later), i was able to sign in without
issue.  The troubleshooting steps:
1.  Updated the network driver today (still receiving same result)
2.  Re-added the computer to the domain today (still receiving same result)
3.  the event viewer is showing the 5719 NETLOGON message and also 1129 (but the user has been receiving this for a number of months)
4.  The only thing we haven't tried is creating a new user profile but the only reason I don't see that working is because if its happening with my domain admin account it can't be a profile issue.

Any ideas of what could be causing this and is there a fix for it?  I do see there is a hotfix but wasn't sure if we should run it or not.

I've been trying to find a solid review on the internet comparing these two X1 systems head to head, but no luck so far. The touchscreen and stylus capabilities of the X1 Yoga are nice but not absolutely necessary. I'm worried if the build quality and reliability matches that of the X1 Carbon (X1 Yoga has more moving parts, raising keyboard platform, more mobility in hinges, laptop mode changes reliability, touchscreen reliability, etc), in light of ongoing Lenovo quality control issues. Not that the X1 Carbon is without issues of its own. If the touch and pen capabilities are a "nice to have" feature for someone and not required, are they more trouble then they're worth, given quality issues? Or are the concerns overblown? Would also like to know if the QHD screens used in both systems are identical in terms of brightness, color accuracy, and viewing angles. Same screen manufacturer? Do both keyboards have the same key travel and quality of feel while typing? Would be great if there was a review comparing both directly. Has anyone had hands-on experience with both? Thanks!

Not sure if the title is fitting for this question. I just got back into "photo repair" using Photoshop Elements 6 that I got as a gift a few years ago. The attached "before & after" pictures are of my dad (infant) and 4 of his 11 siblings.

My question is can I do anymore to improve the quality or is this about as good as it gets. This was scanned off an original copy at 800dpi. My only true question/problem is the ability to bring out the shoulders of my uncle so he doesn't have a "floating head" as my brother calls it.

I have a pretty much brand new, relatively high-spec PC on Windows 10 that keeps freezing.
- It crashes when Windows starts up and the mouse isn't moved for a few minutes. If I startup and move the mouse within the first few minutes it works fine
- Randomly freezes during videos or gaming every few days
- Event Viewer tells me that just before the 'Kernel-Power' Critical Error which crashes the PC, the 'Office 2016 Licensing Service' Error occurs every time. So as this Office error occurs before each crash, I'm assuming its causing it
- When I double-click on the Office error, I can the following details:
''The description for Event ID 0 from source Office 2016 Licensing Service cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
Subscription licensing service failed: -1073418220''
Any help would be much appreciated, I've been living with this issue for months and tried to fix it myself for so long. I just don't know where else to turn to.
Thanks in advance,

Hi All,

I'm a new member that was referred here from for a malware issue. While I'm here I also want to seek help with updating from SP2 to SP3. I tried installing from windows update many times when it was still being supported by ms, but was never able to.

I also tried to download and install the stand alone. It gets near the end of the install and then I get an error message "access denied". The sytem then removes all the SP3 files and reverts back to SP2.

I did a search but found that most people were having issues with AMD CPU units. My system is: XP Pro (Media Edition); (2) Duo 266ghz with 3.25 gigs of ram (4gb but windows only recognises 3.25)

Any help will be greatly appraciated.....

A:Hello and a request for help installing Service Pack 3

I could be wrong...but I would think that your malware issue takes precedence over anything else involving an infected system.

If you would like to provide some detail as to what those issues are...and/or a link to your previous thread at the other might help clarify what should be done.

FWIW: The reported issues with AMD processors...turned out to be HP/OEM issues due to the way they set their systems up. Just an info item.

My Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro is broken and our of warranty. (I bought it slightly more than a year ago).
The wifi card is either broken, or perhaps it is being de-activated by the bios. In either event I can't seem to fix it, even after trying a few of the fixes listed on this forum.
Is there some way to get the machine repaired? Are there repair centres I can bring it to somewhere?

A:Yoga 2 Pro - How to repair broken laptop?

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !
Since your laptop is out of warranty you can take it basically anywhere to have it serviced.  Best Buy comes to mind as well as many of the locally owned computer repair shops.  If you are interested in having your laptop serviced locally at a Lenovo authorized Service Center then check out my link below.  Just enter in your city and select the miles you wish to drive.  Then check the Warranty Service Provider box to get a listing of repair places.  Without this box checked the results will only include sellers of Lenovo products.  When you find a center, please call ahead as some listings aren't up-to-date.

A:Avast IS 2016 / Panda IS 2016 / Bitdefender IS 2016

What kind of system do you have?
Panda and Avast are the lightest while Bitdefender can be heavy.

All 3 offer excellent protection (Avast requires tweaking; Bitdefender and Panda works out of the box), while Bitdefender is mainly known for its detection rate (signatures).

Try the 3 of them (trial versions, not the 6 months) and see which one you prefer.

In terms of UI, all 3 are user friendly.

I'm just going to skip the middle man of dealing with Tech Support.  I'm sure they're sincere, but there is a language barrier since I am a native American English Speaker.  That's beside the point.   Basically the TL;DR is that my computer freezes a lot, and it seems to be related to the hard drive.A post describing problem in detail: Former Post  In the past, tech support has issued a repair request, but the desctiption I got back on the diagnostic report did not say correctly what the issue was, and the facility said the device was fine.  It is not.   So, I was wondering if any Acer people would be able to help get the ball rolling on getting this thing finally fixed. Thank you kindly in advanced,Zackh

I run a web server from my laptop, and my IP address (location) gets updated via servers.

My notebook is always behind a NAT-configured LAN, and I have configured the router firewall to pass port 80 service requests to my IP (usually 192.168.x.2, where x is maybe 0 or 1 or whatever...I use NetSetMan for location based setting). Note: the DHCP server is configured to stay away from static addresses in the private LAN.

Most routers have their own port 80 service, the configuration interface, accessible by hosts inside the LAN.

I don't have a problem with port 80 service requests coming from the WAN getting passed to 192.168.x.2 host running the web server.

BUT, users in the 192.168.x subnet requesting service from within the LAN do NOT get delivered the web page from host 192.168.x.2, but instead the router's configuration interface, if they use the host NAME. Of course, if they use the host IP address, they get the content.

What is happening of course is that if anyone uses "", it goes to where the IP is resolved to the address a.b.c.d, the WAN IP address of the router I am currently connected to. So the http client bundles the packet to the destination a.b.c.d:80.

The users INSIDE the LAN get the router configuration interface web page when they type in a.b.c.d:80, but not users OUTSIDE the LAN (in that WAN).

What's the solution?

A:Passing Port 80 Service Request Through Router From WAN To LAN

Any chance this is a Belkin router? I had the same problem with my Belkin N450 Gigabit, not being able to use my DynDNS name, only the ip address (192.168.....). The Belkin died a few days ago when our power blipped two or three times in a row (I did not have the router on a battery backed up UPS plug, do now).

I replaced it with a Netgear 450 Gigabit router and the problem is gone. I can now connect using the DynDNS name (and name) again. So, bottom line is, it's probably your router causing the problem.

I went round and round with Belkin on this for over a month and finally just gave up. Made it difficult to test changes to the web server.

Last week, I purchased a refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad 11e Yoga Chromebook.  When I received it, it was sealed in the original packaging with a sticker indicating that it had been refurbished at a Lenovo facility.  When I turned it on, I got stuck at the Enterprise Enrollment screen.  It seems that it was registered to the domain of the original owner and would not let anyone login without credentials for that domain.  The trackpad was also non-responsive, but I figured once I logged in, I could toggle the trackpad settings and get it working. There was a link to contact Google for help with this, so I followed those instructions.  Google said that they could not help me, and that I'd need to contact the original owner to have them de-register the device.  Since I had no connection to the original owner, I contacted the seller who apologized and told me that, since the device had a full warranty, Lenovo should be able to fix the issue. So, I contacted Lenovo for help on Sunday.  The Tech Support Agent that I spoke to first tried to tell me to return the device and get something that ran Windows since Chrome OS and Android are inferior(!).  Anyway, once I assured him that I did indeed want a Chromebook and knew all about Chrome OS, he told me that I could send it in for repair, and that all they'd need to do was wipe the system and re-install the OS with a consumer image instead of the enterprise image that was on the m... You can order the SP2 upgrade CD for free from Microsoft. Some of the computer stores have them on display for convenience.

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for taking the time to read/answer my problem.  I am an admin and some of my users have been experiencing this issue recently.  It seems to have happened after Windows Updates.  Our systems are Dell 7250/7450's about 2 years old (give
or take).  They are running Windows 8.1 and mostly standard programs (office, Kaspersky Anti-virus) but, they are also running Dell Data Protection|Encryption (Enterprise Edition).
My first case was a user in the airport heading to Japan and couldn't get logged in.  That was bad.  Now, I have lots of users who cannot login to their computers unless they're on the local network.  I'm interested in finding out how I can

Hello again, I'm the guy from this topic: What should i be concerned about when Replacing HDD with SSD? Since I discovered something new regarding tweaking SSD efficiency and it seems it takes too long for experts to look at my reply so I will post some new question here. I heard about some RAID, AHCI and IDE SATA setting and don't really understand it. So: 1. Which one should I use? RAID, AHCI or IDE? Which one works best for my new Samsung SSD 850 Pro without blow it up faster? And please tell me how to change to that setting. 2. It seems I can't access to AHCI setting from my laptop BIOS setting (You can check my laptop spec in the above link). Why? 3. About the TRIM, will it self-enable after  I replace my want-to-die HDD with brand new SSD? If not, how should I enable it? 4. Is there anything else I should know about tweaking my laptop for the new SSD (from physically to digitally)? Thank you for your help. I appreciate it even if it don't help at all. It always good to learn new things. And again, you can check my laptop spec from the link above. If you are kind enough, please check this link (it shows how to tweak for ssd efficiency) and tell me if what they said is true:

Hello, I have a HP ENVY TS 15 Notebook PC and the casing on the left right over the fan and security cable is split. I think a little piece may have broken off.  The computer runs, fine, but the silver top, and the black bottom case are continually separating and it makes it really hard to open and close it and the screen is a ittle  wobbly. I've read through some of the other forums and so I think  I need to replace the casing, but do I also need to replace the top cover or anything else? The top cover looks fine, but i don't know,  it looks like the issue is with the case but I don't know.  Also, do I need special screws? Any help is greatly appreciated, i just want to make sure I get all the right pieces. Thanks!

Hello, I just bough an old ThinkPad X230 yesterday and the machine came preloaded with Windows 8 Pro (There is also a Genuine Color-changing Stamp of Windows 8 applied to the base of the ThinkPad). I immediately updated to Windows 10 without any problems as the Windows was activated automatically and everything is working just fine now. However, I'm planning to replace the hdd originally installed in my X230 with a Samsung 850 EVO SSD to boost up performance, but I have no ideas what to do to keep my Windows genuine after installing Windows in the new SSD.There are posts confirm that the activation key is embedded into the bios of some sort so the Windows will be automatically activated no matter what kind of hardware change I make. Is this right? I really need your help and deeply appreciate all your information.Thank you

Using the latest win 10 install media your license is read from bios during a clean install. So your good.Remember to switch bios into uefi only and turn on secure boot (if not already enabled). If your new 850 evo is not blank, make sure to delete all partitions on it during win install to get a GPT partition table. I also suggest you update the BIOS now before you start the swap.

My question is do I have a virus or a windows 10 problem?
I keep receiving the following message/error while trying to open up certain programs like:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Malewarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"
Task Manager:
"C:\WINDOWS\system 32\WF.msc
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"
Run CMD as administrator
"C:\WINDOWS\system 32\cmd.exe
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"
I have windows 10 (upgraded from 7)and use Avast Free as my antivirus. I got a message today that Avast blocked a virus(or something harmful), so I ran a scan with Avast and it came back clean. Then I decided to run Malwarebytes, and this is when I started to notice these issues. I haven't ran Malwarebyte in a month or two so the problem could of been there before. I tried to uninstall the program but I get the same error. I went to Malwarebytes website and downloaded the mbam-clean I followed their instructions to uninstall Malwarebyte but I receive the same error "The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion". On microsoft support website I followed the instructions to use the system file checker tool. I can use the command prompt normally, but if I try to run as administrator (which it recommends) I get the same error.
Hopefully you can help. Thanks.

A:The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion

I fixed it. It was a windows 10 problem. I found a post the Microsoft support form that said to restart with "Enable debugging mode". Everything is a lot faster and works now. The Malwarebytes scan came back clean.

Hi, I've been using Thinkpad machines for over 6 years now and have had to use the internationl warrany services before without any issue on machines from the US, UK, Germany and Portugal. This time I had a 2015 Yoga 14 which had from the start an issue with the hinges. When contacting the customer service they said that it would cost 200 to repair a faulty hinge! Then I contacted Lenovo on Facebook and they arranged me a repair. The laptop has been since May 9 in repair with no estimated repair date and now they have stopped answering my emails. I have been for almost two months without my working machine when it was supposed to take 7 days!! This is unaceptable that its happening to the brand that used to have the best customer service and support, and I will definetly never buy or recommend a Thinkpad Yoga ever. Does anyone have any suggestion on what to do when this happens? Thank you ?

Announcing Beta of Malwarebytes 3.0, a Next-Generation Antivirus Replacement - Malwarebytes 3.0 Beta - Malwarebytes Forums

Today we have released the beta of our next-generation product, Malwarebytes 3.0! This product is built to provide comprehensive protection against today?s threat landscape so that you can finally replace your traditional antivirus.

Our engineers have spent the last year building this product from the ground up and have combined our Anti-Malware, Anti-Exploit, Anti-Ransomware, Website Protection, and Remediation technologies all into a single product which we simply call ?Malwarebytes.? And it scans your computer 3-4 times faster!

When we launch Malwarebytes 3.0, we are confident that you can finally replace your traditional antivirus, thanks to our innovative and layered approach to preventing malware infections using a healthy combination of proactive and signature-less technologies. While signatures are still effective against threats like potentially unwanted programs, the majority of our malware detection events already come from our signature-less technologies like our Anti-Exploit and Anti-Ransomware; that trend will only continue to grow. For many of you, this is something you already know, since over 50% of our customers already run Malwarebytes as their sole security software, without any third-party antivirus. But rest assured, we will continue to support compatibility if you choose to use a third-party antivirus or other security software a... Read more

I am owning one dell inspiron 7537 laptop. I had a problem with my laptop LCD(dead pixel) and it got replaced with some refurbished panel just before 2 months. after one month of replacement the screen started to show some problem (flickering / freezing) again I raised service request, this time I asked them to replace a my own lcd panel after serviced. as per the technical support they are ready to replace the part with another refurbished one. they can't replace it my original panel or new one (which I didn't ask) reasons they are saying is like my laptop is old so Dell policy not supports to replace a New Panel to it. OK no problem what I am asking is to get me the original part of my laptop after serviced. There will be no age problem / or dell policy issue. Because I know how much I cared my laptop. And I don’t want someone’s unknown parts that too after refurbished state. Get my laptop’s own part after serviced. Because as you see after fixing a refurbished part, it is not even passed at least a 6 month (most common warranty period) then how much I can blindly trust it again. This is my personal laptop. So I don’t plan to spend another big amount just after the warranty period expires.I have 14 more months remaining my warranty with Accidental cover insurance.

Multiple banks say they are seeing evidence that Home Depot stores may be the source of a massive new batch of stolen credit and debit cards that went on sale this morning in the cybercrime underground. Home Depot says that it is working with banks and law enforcement agencies to investigate reports of suspicious activity.
Update: 1:50 p.m. ET: Several banks contacted by this reporter said they believe this breach may extend back to late April or early May 2014. If that is accurate — and if even a majority of Home Depot stores were compromised — this breach could be many times larger than Target, which had 40 million credit and debit cards stolen over a three-week period.

Question: Is there an actual Cisco VPN Anyconnect version that works as advertised without cutting
and band aiding the code?
I am using Windows Professional 7 64 bit and having a devil of time trying to get this set up.  My employers tech support teams seems to be unfamiliar with how to fix this
problem as well.  I am using the internet version of Cisco VPN anyconnect-win-2.4.0202 to establish a working VPN connection.
I actually feel for Bill Gates and the disappointment he must have for his company Microsoft. How could a billion dollar world class company deliver a product
with so many problems.  I am sure MSFT is doing its best to engage Cisco in partnering with them to resolve this issue quickly.

If you have any helpful recommendations for a better Operating System that works well with networks I am open to suggestions.

A:The VPN client agent was unable to create the interprocess communication depot.

The version 2.4 of Cisco Anyconnect VPN Client is compatible with Windows 7 64bit, you can verify in

Cisco Anyconnect Client 2.4.0202 runs on Windows 7 64bit. As I don’t have this product at my hand, I kindly recommend you to contact Cisco for guided help.

Only a few months old, my HP Pavilion X360 had a hard disk failure. I sent it in for repairs under warranty, and it was repaired and shipped back to me two days ago. But HP did not require ME--the person they were shipping it to-- to sign for the delivery. It asked only for an "indirect" signature. I live in an apartment building, and the request for an "indirect" signature meant a building manager could sign for it. And of course she left the computer in an open room that anyone has access to. And, surprise! Someone walked off with it. When I send a $700 computer to HP, I expect it to be shipped back to ME -- SECURELY. Requiring only an indirect signature -- a signature of someone I don't even know -- is NOT secure shipping. Write "Direct signature required" -- that's all it takes! -- and FedEx or UPS will either get my signature, or, if I am not home, leave a message for me to pick up my computer at their facility. Easy! BEWARE: You might not get your computer back if you ship it to HP for repairs, and they will shrug and say "Not my problem" . They need to send me a laptop to replace the one they lost with their insane shipping policy: Really, you don't return the laptop to the person who sent it to you? I never authorized someone else to sign for my computer and just leave it for someone to take. I have been an HP customer for years, but I feel burned by this and will NEVER purchase an HP product again.

After confirming a few weeks ago that credit card details for more than 56 million customers were stolen by hackers who managed to breach Home Depot’s security system in a sophisticated Target-like manner, the retail store on Thursday also confirmed that as many as 53 million email addresses were also stolen by attackers, The New York Times reports.
Thus, in addition to being able to replicate credit cards using the stolen card info in order to steal money or place fraudulent orders, hackers might also use the massive email database to target unsuspecting users with various secondary phishing attacks. Specifically, hackers could send email messages containing links and/or attachments to fraudulent websites masquerading like real sites but meant to steal login user credentials for various services, including online banking services.

A:F-Secure Internet Security 2016 vs Panda Free Antivirus 2016

If a security soft ranks amongst the top performing AVs, it won't matter much if it does function correctly or causes problems on your specific system.

From lab test results F-Secure has an edge over Panda during testing the past few years in terms of detection (although higher false positives).

From users, it seems more prefer Panda - which is one of Neil Rubenking's (PCMag) favs (that don't mean much - but that is just my opinion).

I'd say, in terms of overall protection, Panda has a slight edge; it might protect your system in a few instances that F-Secure will not.

I'd been struggling with my system freezing up and occasionally throwing the BSOD. The system would boot and run fine for about 2 minutes then it would act like it was being overtaxed, taking 30 seconds or more to respond to screen input. This is a i7 (64bit) processor with 4Gb of RAM and Process Explorer showed no appreciative activity. After hours of safemode tests removing and restoring countless third party services I found a informational error in the event log stating that the Windows Modules Installer had problems starting. So I disabled the WMI service and my system stopped freezing up ran just fine; however now windows Updates won't install. Obviously there is something wrong with the Windows installation subsystem; how do I repair this? I am running Windows 7 Pro

A:How to repair the windows update service

Here's the Services console Description of Windows Modules Installer (TrustedInstaller)
" Enables installation, modification, and removal of Windows updates and optional components. If this service is disabled, install or uninstall of Windows updates might fail for this computer. "

It should actually state " ... will fail for this computer " as TrustedInstaller is the Owner of all of the system files and if it's Disabled no updates will install.

With the WMI service still Disabled, open Windows Update in Control Panel.
Click the Change settings link in the left frame.
Click the drop down window under Important updates and set it to " Never check for updates (not recommended)"
Click OK and agree to the UAC prompt.

Now go back to the WMI service and set it's Startup type: to Manual.
How is the system behaving now ?

If the system is not stable now, then do not do any of the below steps. Instead, run the System File Checker since, according to your posted system specs, Service Pack 1 has not been installed yet - How to Repair Windows 7 System Files with System File Checker

If the system is stable, then go here, download, and save the Fixit - How do I reset Windows Update components
When the download completes close all open programs and web browsers.
With the system connected to the internet, run MicrosoftFixit50202.msi and choose it's Default mode.
Whether prompted to or not, restart the system after the Fixit finishes running.

Hi peeps,

I have an odd one and was hoping one of you gurus could advise

First I ran a setup.exe file which I think was a virus or trojan or whatever you call them. I double-clicked the file, nothing happened but immediately the little red shield appeared and when I clicked on that automatic updates was turned off.

Tried to turn back on and got message saying could not be started.

Went into Services and the Automatic Updates services wasn't there.

Did cntr-alt-del and looked at the processes, wuauclt.exe wasn't there.

Ran Malwarebytes, Spybot, Superantispyware and Avirascan, none picked up anything installed on the machine, but Superantispyware did flag the setup.exe file as a false alert and deleted it but not anything that was installed after I clicked the exe file if that makes sense?

I found a site that gave instructions for start and repair of the service. I tried the following as CMD

net start wuauserv

didn't work.

Tried below saved as a cmd file in notebook, didn't work.

net stop "Automatic Updates"
del /f /s /q %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\*.*

Tried the following saved as .cmd file in notebook and it DID work:

Please bear with the details below:  At the beginning of this month I sent my pc to the HP repair center for a touchscreen related issue. Other than the toucscreen issue my pc was running rather flawlessly. When I got my pc back, windows 10 (which I had upgraded to from windows 8.1 some months before ) wouldn't update, I could download nothing from the app store, and my pc wouldn't allow me to sign in to my Microsoft account. I called tech support, the tech remotely connected to my pc, did some stuff, and I finally consented to do a system recovery (which reinstalled windows 8.1 as that was the original os) when nothing else seemed to work. From that point on windows has been informing me that I do not have an active copy of it on my pc and that I either have to enter a new product key or puchase one. From there I have spent over a week of my time on the phone with HP. I've done about 4 system recoveries (none of which have worked obviously and which keep me tied to my pc for hours at a time) and no one from HP seems concerned or really willing to help me at all, other than giving me the run around and suggesting I do yet another recovery, and a whole lot of "hmmmm". HP does not seem to care at all that my pc was fine until someone on THEIR END screwed it up and now they don't seem very eager to help me with activating wind... Read more

Hi If the system board / mother board has been replaced then I expect all of the problems stem from there. The "recovery" involves what exactly? The system board gets registered with Microsoft to provide a Licence/Activation key, so if you have an unregistered board then I don't expect you will ever solve this without either buying a key, or convincing HP to correct it for you. So unless you can go back to a registered copy of W 8.X and upgrade to  W10 then you are stuck, hence my query on the word recovery.

This item is under warranty and received at the HP Service Center in Jeffersonville, Indiana on Tuesday September 21. Everytime I check the online status it shows "not received". I have proof from UPS that it was signed for at the warehouse dock. I started a chat session last week with someone overseas and they said "my computer is safe, don't worry about it and the status will be updated in 1-2 business days". As of today the status is still the same. I was told since it was returned to the HP Service Center via UPS, they have no way of tracking the return in the system. The service order number is BJDH168901. Can someone please attempt to find my laptop or give me the status if it is being repaired by one of your technicians? Thank You

Repair Windows Installer Service in Vista (All Versions)
This is just to help folks that may be experiencing something similar to the post found here:
(Repair Windows Installer Service in Vista (All Versions))

When you try to install a new app or /remove/add programs by using Add or Remove Programs in VISTA, you may receive the following error message:

"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run (or refused to run the uninstall from control panel). Contact your support personal or package vendor. "

Some of this has been gleaned from a Microsoft post that was not quite on-spot for this issue but relevant in some part ( if you care to read it - You may receive Error 1721 when you try to remove programs by using Add or Remove Programs in Windows XP)

To resolve this issue, perform the steps in the "Reregister the Windows Installer service" section. If you experience the issue after you perform these steps, you may also have to perform the steps in the "Run System File Checker" section. (I had run the "Run System File Checker")

Register the Windows Installer service:

Log on to the computer as local administrator.
Click Start, click Run, type cmd.exe, and then click OK. (or Start, search, cmd, rightclick run as administrator)

1. At the command prompt, type msiexec /unregister , and then press ENTER.
2. At the command prompt, type... Read more

A:Repair Windows Installer Service in Vista (All Versions)

Hello, and welcome to the Vista Forums!

Thank you so much for this! It was very nicely written and researched. May I just add my 2 cents, to provide a full fix.

1. At the command prompt, type msiexec /unregister , and then press ENTER.
2. At the command prompt, type msiexec /regserver, and then press ENTER.
3. At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER to close the command prompt.
4. Remove the software program from Add or Remove Programs.

sfc /purgecache

Sadly these no longer work in Windows Vista and 7. All of these switches have been removed. These are Windows XP fixes, and do not apply.

Moreover, you are missing just the tiniest bit. Many service errors come from the registry.

I shall post a registry fix this evening. If the services are corrupt in the registry, they won't work! They need to be added back. I cannot find a copy of the registry script in these five seconds, and so I shall re-make it this evening.

Again, please don't take this to heart. We are always looking for new members, especially ones who can write so well, and I am just adding to your post, to provide a really top notch, and full soltution. If you are looking for a bit of training, or have any questions about anything, perhaps you are particulary interested in this registry script, then do contact me, or post on the forum, depeding on what is appropriate

Thanks so much!

Yesterday I tried to install Service Pack 2 for 32bit Vista.

When restarting the screen freezes, showing the following message: !! 0xc0190036 !! 1707/69942 (WMIADAP.EXE)

I've tried running startup repair from a boot disk, but it runs forever (left overnight last time)

The boot disk's system restore doesn't work either - it runs forever on finalising files.

I can't run windows in safe mode either and unfortunately, this is where my rather limited technical expertise (and patience) end!

Is there anything that can be done!? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Please post the entire onscreen error message...and tell us at exactly what point it appears.

I have a laptop which is having difficulty with explorer hanging or restarting. I have scanned with ESET and also Superantispyware and it is registering as clean. Although it was infected by malware over a year ago which was cleaned and all seemed well. I have tried to run sfc /scannow and had the message above. It wont run either in recovery environment or in normal mode. The laptop is running Windows 7 HP 32bit. There is a problem by the look of it on the components registry hive which has not updated since March 2014 all other hives seem to be up to date. Internet Explorer had loads of installed junky toolbars and plugins which I have disabled and removed. I installed Firefox to avoid all the junk to use as a cleaner browser whilst troubleshooting. The laptop browses the internet OK but tends to be very slow on refreshing web pages at times.
Any help you can give would be most appreciated.

I also have a power supply that gives me an error every time I boot. I am not sure where to start. My problems seem to keep getting worse.

A:Vista home 32 bit service pack update stuck on startup repair

Hi artoodles,
I’d suggest you to run the diagnostics on the computer by following the steps mentioned below and check if there is any issue with the hardware on your system.Turn on or restart the computer.Immediately at the Dell logo screen, starting tapping the <F12> key once a second until the One Time Boot menu appears (if the computer boots to Windows turn the computer off and try again). At the One Time Boot menu, press the <Down> arrow key to highlight Diagnostics, PSA+ or Enter ePSA, then press <Enter> to begin the PSA.Write down any error codes listed. Reply to us with the error codes.
Also, I would suggest you to boot the system into ‘Advanced options’ (F8 during startup) screen and try booting up the system from ‘Last Known good configuration’.
If you have not altered the hard drive partitions on the system then you can restore the system to factory state by following the link below.
Note: Restoring the original factory image erases ALL existing data. This includes files, folders, programs, drivers, E-mails, photos. Before performing a PC Restore, back up all personal files by contacting a local technician. If you do not back up your personal files, the data will be lost.

"Patch Tuesday" broke our install of Outlook 365. It was working fine on Monday and on Tuesday it was hanging on "Processing." So I restored back to the last restore point before the update and it worked great after that. Yesterday it re-installed the updates, and again Outlook didn't load. Restoring again today "fixed" it. Now it wants to update again, so I will disable updates until the problem is fixed. I don't know which particular "patch" is causing the problem; there were about 22 of them that installed.

Good evening. Take a trip to this webpage for download links and instructions for running Combofix by sUBs.* Please be aware that this tool may require the PC to be rebooted so close any programs you have open before you start. When CF has finished, it will produce a log - C:\ComboFix.txt - copy and paste it into your next reply. Let me know how the PC is behaving.* There are two points to note from the instructions page:1) The Recovery Console. It is recommended that you install this as, in certain circumstances, it may be the difference between a successful repair and a reformat. If you are uncertain as to whether or not you already have the Recovery Console installed, simply run CF and it will prompt you if it does not detect it.CF will complete some, but not all, of it's removal tasks without the installation of the Console so, should you choose not to allow the installation, you may not get the results you hoped for.2) Disabling your Anti-Virus.CF has been the victim of false-positive detections on occasion and a resident AV may incorrectly identify and delete part of the tool which won't do it much good. If you don't disable your AV, you may not get the results you hoped for either.

Norton Internet Worm Protection (in Norton AntiVirus) has detected and blocked two different Intrusion Attempt ("ISearch DNS Request" and "Goidr DNS Request")
Norton has blocked it and that?s all fine but does this mean I have some kind of malware (spyware/adware) on my computer?

I have had problems with Trojans, Downloaders, Adware (Virtumonde is one of them) since Aug. 26th. I thought I had got rid of all the bad stuff but a few days ago Norton stated to give me these warnings.
Norton have also recently detected "Infostealer.Gampass" (and deleted it).

So now I wonder if this is serious and if I need to do more to clean up my computer?

I am just an average computer user that is trying to understand and solve this problem so I would be very thankful for some expert advice on this.

(I have Norton Antivirus, expired version of Webroot SpySweeper, Spybot - Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware, Windows Defender and AVG Anti-Spyware installed on my computer right now to try to find any still remaning "bad stuff".)

P.S. I have tried to find help on Symantec?s website but all it says is to uninstall some program that is causing this (there is none as far as I can see) and do a virus scan (I have! SEVERAL times!! Norton finds nothing).

Once again, thankful for any help and advice I can get.

Hi, welcome to Bleeping Computer. The short answer to your question is Yes.Virtumonde is a difficult thing to get rid of with ordinary tools. Then you seem to have other infections complicating the situation. One of them is a password stealer.I suggest you take this machine offline as much as possible, and change all your passwords from a clean computer. Go ahead and scan with those free tools you have downloaded, they will clear out some of the malware, but I think you are going to need help to get your computer clean.Remove your expired version of SpySweeper, it's useless without current definitions. Please follow the instructions in this preparation guide and post a HijackThis log in the HijackThis forum, not here. Be patient, there is quite a backlog there at the moment. If after five days, you have not received a reply, post a note with the URL of your topic here. Good luck.

A recent cumulative update for Exchange 2016 was intended to add support for Windows Server 2016. But, after numerous reported issues, Microsoft has acknowledged a problem exists.

According to the release notes?

If you attempt to run Microsoft Exchange 2016 CU3 on Windows Server 2016, you will experience errors in the IIS host process W3WP.exe. There is no workaround at this time. You should postpone deployment of Exchange 2016 CU3 on Windows Server 2016 until a supported fix is available.

Once again, Microsoft?s testing of its own patches seems to have taken a backseat to accelerated release deadlines.

Hello All, I have an issue with my YOGA 700 laptop when logged in multiple accounts simultaneously. Whenever an account is left logged on and the user is switched as opposed to logging off, the cpu usage ramps up very high with several RUNDLL32 processes being the culprit. I have checked the RUNDLL32 processes with Process Explorer and the command line are as follows:C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe C:\ProgramData\LenovoTransition\Server\x64\EnableAutoRotation.dll,RunCustomMonitor The directory is as follows: C:\ProgramData\LenovoTransition\Server\x64\ The only solution I have found is restarting the laptop. The problems comes back when again more than one user is logged in. Also, the rundll32 processes only run high cpu on one account at a time and there doesn't seem to be a preference for a specific account, all of them are plagued one at a time with the problem. I believe my computer has become infected with this malware. The symptoms yesterday were continues messages from Norton about blocking various attacks. Trojan Horse was mentioned in one of the entries, also. I attempted to clean these off myself. The steps I took: I noticed I had around 30 tasks in windows scheduler that ran every 15 minutes. I deleted those. According to the event log, windows security center was disabled so I renabled that. I checked the registry files where I was familiar with looking and didn't see anything unusual. Today, the symptoms are redirects in IE 8 to different websites than clicked, about every 30 minutes another block by Norton for HTTPS tidserv request or HTTPS tidserv request 2, I can not make changes in MSCONFIG even though I'm logged in as administrator, and the computer will not boot in safe mode or safe mode with networking.Attaching the attach.txt and ark.log files. From the DDS.txt log:DDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Brian at 22:32:26.64 on Sat 04/10/2010Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18702Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.502.202 [GMT -4:00]AV: Norton Internet Security *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {E10A9785-9598-4754-B552-92431C1C35F8}FW: Norton Internet Security *enabled* {7C21A4C9-F61F-4AC4-B722-A6E19C16F220}============== Running Processes ===============C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunchsvchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k ne...
