Optiplex 790 Mini-Tower Dual Monitor ?

Q: Optiplex 790 Mini-Tower Dual Monitor ?

I have an Optiplex 790 Mini-Tower with an i5-2400 and integrated Intel HD 2000 video.
The case has both a VGA and Display Port connector, I am presently using the VGA port. I am investigating going for a Dual Monitor setup and am confused whether I can do so without having to purchase a discrete video card. I am reading conflicting reports that some say yes and others no. Can some kind soul please confirm one way or the other ?
I do not use the PC for gaming, it is work only with the occasional video and web browsing. Mainly I need dual monitor for multiple file editing, scripting, database programming etc.
Many thanks, Fin.

A: Optiplex 790 Mini-Tower Dual Monitor ?

Hi Fin,
OptiPlex 790's onboard video solution supports both VGA and DisplayPort at the same time. You can connect two monitors to the computer without adding a discrete card.
Please let me know if you need further information.

Hi, Currently I'm using a dual core 6850 and I'm thinking about buying a quad core. I have a PSU of 500 W as spare.

Can i replace the CPU to a Quad Core without changing the cooling system?

A:replace dual core CPU by quad core what about heatsink? in Mini Tower 755 Optiplex

heinflhs
These are the specs of the spare PSU. Aren't they better than the original Dell PSU?
That power supply is ATX and not EPS12V
Better is not the issue.  Dell power supplys are 80 percent efficient not 70 percent ATX.  The -5v rail is an issue as well as this may cause a motherboard fire or damage your system.  Its a dead giveaway that this is a power supply from 1990 to 2000.
What current is on which rails is not trivial. There is a single 12V RAIL on that unit and its max is 17A
EPS 12V units have multiple rails of 12V @ 18 amps each.  MAX Power on the 12V rails is 264w not 204w
That unit has a lot more on the 5V and 3.3V rails at the expense of the 12V rails and CPU 4 pin connector. So no that spare unit is not likely to work well if at all.

Recommended update or replacement is EVGA 750B1

Hi, I might be able to buy a second hand Optiplex mini tower and I would like to install the motherboard etc. of my Optiplex 755 SFF.

Wilt thi fit?

The idea is that with the Mini Tower I can buy a better GPU.

thanx.

A:Does motherboard of Optiplex 755 SFF fit in a Dell optiplex 745 dualcore mini tower?

No it wont fit.   The board layout, number of slots etc is different.

Hi,I am looking into upgrading the gpu of this 745 that I currently don't have yet. I have my eye on an Asus NVIDIA GT 710, but was wondering if it will fit in terms of height. I read online someone expressing concerns about it needing two slots space, but that was never clarified or refute in the discussion. Would this one fit?If not, what other options do I have in a similar price range? I would prefer to go for a 2GB card, but will settle for 1GB if I have to. Thanks for your time.Regards

Hello,
I own a Optiplex 760 Mini Tower.
I found out that I have a 0G214D Motherboard. Unfortunately I still can not find out if this means I can upgrade to a Quad core. Can you please tell me if this is the case and which CPU is the most powerful Quadcore I can use? And if not wich of the Dual cores I should use. BTW, i use an Nvidia  GTX750ti using 60W.
Thank you and all the best

http://www.dell.com/downloads/ap/products/optix/optix_760_tech_guide.pdf
Q9650 is max.  Bios update should be done BEFORE trying to change cpu.

750 TI only fits in the TOWER and Only After Cutting the Bracket off and ONLY with Short cards with 1 fan aka 8.4 inches max.

There are no single slot cards.   If one was put in they hacked the bracket in half or removed bracket altogether.  If you remove the bracket on EVGA models you can use tin snips to CUT OFF half the bracket.  The cooling vents are blocked so you might also have to drill holes in the case to let air out.  Long Cards with 2 fans DO NOT FIT and WILL NOT EVER FIT into the Tower or any other size.

Only Short cards with Short fans Fit.

And also My bios version is 2.6.3 .. what is the main fault in it.... kindly anyone tell me.... what should i do ???

A:Dell Optiplex 745 Mini Tower Upgrade

Hi Asfand_Munib,
Before installing a new processor, please update the BIOS to latest version from Here.
Note : Please save and close all running programs and documents and disconnect all external peripherals (printer, flash drives, external hard drives, etc) and connect the computer to a surge protector before updating the bios.
If all the lights are green and you are not receiving any beep codes from the system then it means that the processor has been installed correctly. Please check if the keyboard lights (Capslock, Numlock, etc) respond when you press the corresponding keys. Please verify the connections on rear of the system and check if they are connected firmly. Also, check if you are able to hear any windows jingle sounds after some time when you power on the system. Please share the exact model of Optiplex 745 you are using as it comes in 4 form factors viz Ultra Small Form Factor (USFF), Desktop (DT), Small Form Factor (SFF), and Mini-Tower (MT). A picture is attached below.

Please reply with the information. Will take it further from there.

There is a design problem with the OptiPlex 7040 Mini Tower case that leads to excessive noise. The plastic grid panel on the front of the case rattles loudly, especially when the system is operating under a heavy computational workload. I'm not certain if the vibration originates from a fan or from the hard drive, but it's clearly causing resonance in that plastic front grid panel. I'm certain that the front panel is what's making the noise. The noise goes away completely if I press my finger against the front panel (and resumes immediately when I remove my finger). My current workaround to the problem is to prop up the front of the case with a piece of bubble wrap. Dell's engineers should consider altering this case design to address the vibration problems.

Hi ,
Thank you for writing to us !
To understand the cause of this issue I would ask you to try these steps and advise the result ,
*Disconnect the system from wall socket ,then press and hold the power button for about 15 - 20 secs .Then connect the system to wall socket and try to turn on the system .Here we are trying to release static charge from the system .
*Then disconnect all the peripheral components from the system and try to turn on the system .
*If the above step fails then remove all the memory modules from the system and try to turn on the system with only 1 memory module at a time .
If there are any more queries do reply to this post with system service tag sent via private message .
Hoping to hear from you soon .
Kind Regards,

1. Does the motherboard have standard CPU and motherboard power connectors or proprietary ones?
2.  Is it possible to replace the stock PSU with a cooler master extreme power plus 600W? If no, then what size /kind of PSU will fit there?
3. Is it possible to fit a gtx 1080 in there?

Hello, my Optiplex 7040 just arrived this week.  I bought a Kingston 120mb SATA ssd in a 2280 stick, so I'm trying to see if I can use this for my main boot drive (Windows 10) and then move the 500gb 3.5 Sata drive over to a storage drive. When I install the 120gb 2280 stick into the M.2 slot, and load the bios...   *It shows up under General / System Information / PCI information / Slot5_M.2 & also under Device Information / SATA-4   *When I look under System Configuration / Drives, it also shows up under SATA-4 here as well.  However, it's showing up as a 0gb Drive under 'type'!
So when I boot from a USB drive to try and reinstall Windows on this M.2 stick, it's not showing up at all.
When I connect the M2 SATA drive and load Windows on the existing 3.5 SATA drive that came with the 7040, the M2 2280 stick shows up in 'device manager' under the hard drives.  The serial # there corresponds to a Toshiba-form hdd; unfortunately, I can't do anything with it in Windows 10.
SATA operation is set to AHCI, and I am booting into legacy with the USB.Any thoughts?  I'm wondering if maybe I have a dead memory stick.  There's no real way I can test it on another computer to see what happens.

A:Optiplex 7040 Mini Tower M.2 slot upgrade....

For Windows 10 you should have a UEFI Boot with SecureBoot Enabled. The USB should be made using the GPT partition scheme for UEFI BIOS. I hope you mean 120 GB and not 120 MB....

I cannot get an OptiPlex 755 Mini Tower to power on. It had been running fairly continuously in an office environment on a APC battery backup/surge protector until it failed Monday morning. Then there was some orange light that was flashing or continuous. When the computer was turned off, it would not come on again. Sorry for the vagueness, but this is second-hand information. I found a fair amount of dust inside, but I've seen far worse on computers
When I push the power button I get no change: no light in the power button, no diagnostic lights, no sounds, no fan movement. When I connect it to power the "AUX LED" light on the motherboard comes on a solid yellow/amber so the PSU is putting out something.
Is this likely to be a PSU problem? Is there some way to pin it down other than buying a replacement PSU?
Thanks for any help,
Joe M

You can't reach the expansion bays and the case design is horrible.  It reminds me of the old style Acer PC's that ended up being throw aways.  Sending this one back right away.  Biggest flop I've seen in a new Optiplex!

Hi TechSpot Forums!

I own a Dell Optiplex GX280 Mini-Tower PC, and am seriously considering buying a graphics card for it.

My question to you is, which would best be compatible with my specs?

System Specs:

Dell Inc. OptiPlex GX280
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3
3.00 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
2552 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory
500.10 GB HDD

Current Video Card:

Name: Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family
Manufacturer: Intel Corporation
DAC Type: Internal
Approx. Total Memory: 128.00 MB
Current Display Mode: 1400 x 1050 (32 bit) (60GHz)

Does installing a graphics card mean you can achieve higher resolutions on your LCD monitor? That is partly the reason I will be purchasing one.

Thanks for any info or suggestions,

Hi everyone:

I was curious if anyone else experienced this issue? I have a Dell OptiPlex 7010 desktop/mini tower that I bought off the official Dell site. I configured that mini tower to have an SSD drive as the main drive, which I like very much, except one very annoying issue. Sometimes out of the blue Windows 7 will hang up, I can't click anything and the mouse starts spinning in a circle. This continues on for about half a minute and then it always comes back to life. Suddenly I start getting all my previous clicks moving windows, opening things, etc, all at once. This happened at least a dozen of times by now and I started to notice that when this happens the HDD/SSD LED on the case glows solid, which made me suspect that there's something going on with the drive itself.

Does anyone know what's going on and how to fix this?

PS. I tried contacting Dell support about this issue but they are pretty useless. I spent several hours in a chat with a guy once that eventually simply hung up on me. Then I emailed someone at Dell, for which the guy replied with instructions to run their hard drive diagnostic tool, which I did, that did not show any errors. (Note that I don't have a hard drive, it's a solid state drive.) I replied to the guy only to never hear from him again.... So I think I'm pretty much done with the Dell support

The hard drive cage isn't the only problem.  The power supply is not standard.
So a short GTX750 TI non SC would be the max.

I have a Dell OptiPlex GX280 mini-tower (smallest one thereis), and the original 160W power supply died a few months ago without warning. I ordered a new power supply, but accidentally ordered the wrong size (210W for one of the larger towers). I used it in the meantime until I could get the proper size (although the 210W supply wouldn’t fit in the mini case – I left it out of the case and ran the wires through the power plug hole). The computer booted up just fine with this 210W power supply. I finally got around to ordering the 160W smaller correct size, but that power supply would not boot up the computer (just got an amber flashing light). Thinking it was just faulty, I sent it back and requested a replacement. The replacement did not work either. I ordered a third replacement, and the third did not work either! So now I am back to using the 210W power supply (No. HP-U2106F3) which does not fit in the computer housing. I know these Dell OptiPlex machines are notorious for having power supply and capacitor issues. But the question is, why will the computer power on using the 210W power supply? I contacted Dell and they were of no help whatsoever. The guy told me that 160W wasn’t enough to power my machine and to order a 210W power supply correctly sized for my chassis. Gee, thanks! First of all, they don’t make 210W that fit in the mini towers, and second of all, why did it used to work just fine??? Oh, and no I have not upgraded anything (i.e., video card, etc.) which... I tried to add a PCIe 16x video card to this machine and plugged a monitor into the card as well as the on board VGA in an effort to setup dual monitors. When I booted after that, I was given an error message after POST that said that is in incompataible configuration. I checked with Dell and they said it was too. I've done this exact thing with a PCI card on an older Dell machine and it worked instantly. Are there any work arounds or BIOS settings that I can change? The add-on card is a Dell ATI Radeon X600.

It doesn't have to be the most amazing stellar quality card out there since iv had (some) people tell me that you cant upgrade these PCs much. But just some good quality advice on the subject and maybe a recommendation on what card brand to get as well as the specs for it. Also a recommendation for a video card would be greatly appreciated as well. Sorry for my ignorance on on the subject, i am new to the PC world. Hello everyone! I'm new to the forums. I have a new Dell Optiplex 7040 tower and have connected two monitors to the DP video connections in the back. Yes, I have two separate DVI cables into the adapter. (Second came all the way from China).  I'm getting a signal and picture from the primary monitor but no signal from the second monitor.
I looked at the BIOS settings but saw nothing there.
I'm using Windows 7 OS.
Can someone point me to the right place or command for the desktop to "see" and second monitor?
Thanks

A:Dell Optiplex 7040 and Dual Monitor

Which form factor, mini-tower, small form or micro?
If you have an add-in video card, do you know if it supports 2 DVI monitors at the same time?
Look in BIOS setup for an "Intel Multi Display" option and Enable it. Manual doesn't show BIOS screens so I don't know if this option actually exists.
Have you gone to the Windows 7 Display settings screen and clicked the Detect button to see if it will detect the second monitor?
Keep in mind if you have an add-in video card, the onboard video ports will be automatically disabled so you can only use the ports on the add-in card (unless there's an Intel Multi Display option in BIOS).
What other ports does the PC have (on the add-in card)? Have you tried using one of those with the second monitor, assuming that monitor supports other inputs, such as VGA, HDMI or DisplayPort?

any advise on how to remedy this would be grateful as I can not seem to find a solution
I have tried all the suggestions I have found up to now
I have not tried the HDMI as my screens don not have the port on them to use this connection

I am having the same problem with my monitors. I have 1 with vga, and 1 with DVI. The VGA works on both monitors, but the dvi does not on either. Windows recognizes the monitor attached to dvi, and allows me to extend the display, but the monitor with DVI connection says no signal, and remains black. I can even drag windows from one monitor to the next and back, but nothing appears on the monitor. The problem is not the monitor as both work just fine with the vga connection. Unfortunatly there is only 1 vga on the video card.

Good evening,

I work for a law firm that uses Dell Optiplex's ranging from 745's to 790's with all inbetween [745, 755, 760, 780, 790]. Our NJ satellite office also has these Dell model ranges, but all of them have Windows XP SP3 installations. These machines generally either have the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Drivers or the ATI Radeon HD 3400 series card/drivers for those models that do not have an available display port. With that said, all machines have dual monitor setups as well.

The issue, put simply: almost a 1/4 of the PC's in our NJ office lose their second monitor on almost a daily basis, where we either have to re-extend the desktop to the other monitor or we have to play the unplug/shutdown/re-plugin game with the display port adaptors.

We're about to run a report containing the following information for the affected machines: OS, BIOS, Video Chipset, Connector Type [VGA2DP, DVI2DP, DP2DP], Power Save Settings. However, I'd like to throw this forum post out there to see if anyone knows any specific Windows XP Pro SP3 issues that exist with utilizing dual monitors on these machine types and/or how to resolve them. Thanks in advance for those who can assist me with any information.

We currently have Dell Optiplex 7010 tower in our office. It's using a single Acer G6 G276HL monitor via DVI-I port on the video card. We were thinking to buy a second monitor and I want to know if it's going to work?
The video card inside this Dell is AMD Radeon HD 7470:https://www.amazon.com/radeon-profile-display-desktop-computer/dp/B00CR230G0
I was thinking to get the same screen:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G5AEZOQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1The issue is connecting it to the display port on the Radeon card. So I was thinking to get this adapter:https://www.amazon.com/HP-DisplayPort-DVI-D-Adapter-481409-002/dp/B00PHINWX2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1470159981&sr=8-2&keywords=display+port+to+dvi-d

A:Trying to set up second screen for Dell Optiplex 7010 tower

I presume you're using a DVI-D cable since the current monitor doesn't support DVI-I which the video card supports.
Why not get a second monitor that supports DisplayPort and go directly from DP on the video card to DP on the second monitor without complicating things with that DP>DVI-D adapter?

A:Wondering if this will work in my Dell Optiplex GX 280 tower-style PC

As long as you have a PCI express socket on the motherboard, that card will work. You may need a power cable adapter to be able to connect the card to the power supply

Hello,
I purchased a GeForce GTX550 IT graphics card a while back only to realize it wouldn't fit into my computer's case (it's a mini ). I was wundering if perhaps theres a way to hook this up externally? I believe it would need a seperate power supply, if it doesn't could you possibly give me the link to a moderatelly priced one that fits my case.
System specs:
Windows 7 Home premium 64-bit
AMD Athlon II X2 220 dual core processor
Nvidia GeForce 6150SE
DVD-Super Multi Drive
4GB DDR3 mem.
500GB HDD

A:GTX550 TI in mini tower help!

No. Video cards connect directly to the motherboard. There aren't any external options, much less a way of using an internal card externally.

There are usually 3 HDD in this case, but in this image, when I installed the GTX 260, I had to remove one. Don't use it anymore though, it was Vista. It's now in an external HDD case for backing up two other PCs in the home...

That wire mass can't be good for air flow. You might want to clean it up a little.

Got a store-bought Gateway SX-2800 model which is a mini-tower. Upgrading the video card, and as a result I am also upgrading the power supply.

Being a mini-tower, will it definitely need a specialized power supply, or will a standard PSU work?

If it needs a specialized PSU where do you suggest getting them and how - would I take the dimensions of my PSU and then talk to a manufacturer? Or would buying a new case along with a standard PSU be cheaper?

Hi, I'm using an 755 SFF now and the system is operating wll. However the adding of a better grafic card is problematic cause of the limited space.

Now I'm thinking of finden a (evt. defect Mini Tower model) and put the motherboard, HDrive of the 755 SFF into the larger Mini Tower case and buy a better grafics card.

Are the components compatible?
thanks

A:Motherboard etc. 755 SFF compatible with the Mini Tower?

Hello, HEINFLHS
Yes everything would work well however from what I know your motherboard is smaller it will go in to the chassis though none of the expansion slots will align with the chassis slots as your motherboard as smaller than the chassis. I suggest you pick up a 755 MT motherboard for full compatibility and by the way these are like $50 or maybe less and you could just put all your current hardware on it (cpu, ram ,hard drive cable, etc) with no capability issues.

A:Building a computer witth a mini-ATX tower

Typo: you listed the monitor twice, once under PSU, Otherwise those parts look fine however even though it is a minitower due to the front mounted power supply that case will support a full ATX motherboard. I would personally recommend a Full ATX motherboard since they offer much more expansion. This is a good option and only costs slightly more, Although If you go with something like this you will get SATA 6gbps, USB 3.0, more memory slots, and a faster chipset.

Also Biostar motherboards are ok but far from the best try to look for boards from Gigabyte, ASUS, or MSI.

Currently, I'm using a Gateway PC (Mini tower) with the built in Intel GMA 4500 HD Graphics. I'm looking to find a decent Mini tower PCI Express Graphics card that can run games like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 at a low-decent resolution at a high FPS - preferrably 80-90 or more if possible. My price range is basically anything under / around $70.

I found a Radeon HD 5450 1 GB supposedly low profile graphics card on Amazon, any opinions on that quality of that?

All fans (CPU, GPU, PSU, Case) are working
Video card removed and reseated
Memory modules removed and reseated
PSU connector to MOBO reseated
CMOS battery replaced
All connectors feel solidly connected, yet there seems to be no power to the monitor or the keyboard.
I've disconnected power, drained residual power and reconnected the power.  The cycling continues.
I would appreciate some other suggestions on what I can try (like - why the monitor and keyboard are not receiving power from the computer).

Hi out there to Vistax64. I am a recent XP to Vista user. I have a Vostro 200 mini tower (specs below) that has been running XP pro for the last few years - couldn't stand the GUI anymore lol - so I installed Vista HP and am very happy with the new interface and features. After tweaking some, the desktop appears from cold start in 30 seconds or so and almost everthing runs as snappy as it did before with XP. But the task manager is showing an average use in physical memory of 1.17 gigs, CPU usage is higher, and some, not all, internet pages scroll slowly e.g. Yahoo news pages, Hearts of Space etc. where as they were fine before. Everthing else on the internet, including this site, works well - though a few installs like Starry Night Enthusiast and a John Deere farm game are slower.

My question is this: Would installing a seperate video card give me better all-around performance or would another gig of ram do the trick? And what brand/type of video card do you folks recommend?

Intel Core2 Duo E4500 @ 2.3ghz
2 Gig of Kingston RAM
Intell G33 Express Chipset (on motherboard)
80 Gig WD SATA Hard Drive
Seasonic 350w PSU

Thanks for the opportunity to have my questions answered and I'm looking forward to cruising the site here!

A:Video Card For Dell Vostro 200 Mini Tower

Windows will allot 50% of your ram by default, for when you need them programs. Remember, rams fastr than hard drive, and why have all that ram and not use it.

For your power supply, a nvidia 430/440 or an ati/amd 6450, maybe get away with a 6550... Seasonics are quality.

The slowdown is probably because Vista is a bit more of a beast than xp, and graphics can be a bit more hefty.

A:Need Help Updating Bios dc7800 Compact Mini Tower : ROM.CAB ...

Hi: There should be no need to update the BIOS if everything is working correctly. If you want to update the BIOS you should use the built in Flash System ROM menu in the BIOS. That is the safest and easiest way to flash the BIOS. All you need is a USB flash drive formatted with the FAT 32 file system. Download the latest BIOS update and run it. You should get an instruction page.  On that page, you want to select the F10 flash system rom option and you should see a view contents of DOS flash folder. Copy all of the files in that folder to your usb flash drive. Plug the flash drive in the usb port, reboot the PC and at the beginning of the HP welcome screen, tap the F10 key to access the BIOS. There will be a menu to Flash System ROM. Select that and it should see the BIOS update files on the usb flash drive.  Then follow the onscreen instructions to proceed with updating the BIOS.

I have a Dell Vostro 230 Mini Tower, and it currently has the Intel Pentium E6500 processor. I would like to upgrade to something better, because my current processor does not meet the minimum requirements of some games I would like to play. I was wondering which processors I could upgrade to? I know that the new processor has to fit the socket on the motherboard, but I don't know how to find out what socket my current motherboard has, or even what motherboard it is.
I would also like to know, if I don't upgrade the processor, but instead get a new motherboard, can I get any motherboard, and plug it in, and will it come with a new processor, or will it have to fit my current processor? Does upgrading the motherboard make much difference to the CPU speeds if I don't actually upgrade the processor?
I am running Windows & SP3, DirectX 11, with 4GB RAM, and i also have an ATI Radeon 5670 HD Graphics Card, and a 300W power supply.
Would I need to get a new power supply if I upgraded the motherboard or processor?

A:Upgrading Video Card on Dell Vostro 270 Mini Tower

The 2GB you are referring to is how much system ram is being given to the onboard Intel GPU video to use. You cannot increase that to 4GB. But you can add a discrete PCIe x16 video card. The Vostro 470 has a 300w power supply. So that will limit you as to which video card you can use. The two video cards that we shipped on this model were =
YG17P Nvidia GeForce 640GT 1GB67V2J Nvidia GeForce 620GT 1GB
Or you could remove our power supply and install a higher wattage power supply and then get a better video card.

Hi Everyone,
We just started a new contract with Dell for corporate Optiplex 7040 mini-towers and I have 2 that arrived DOA. Techs replaced motherboard and we've tried every other conceivable plug in, don't plug in, to see if they will fire up. The irony is the second one just came in as the replacement for the first one which was RMA.
Are there any known issues with these models and defective internal parts out of the factory? I'm hesitant to order more at this point and I've made our distributor CDW aware of the issue.

i know a regular card is too big. What is one of the best 100 dolalr or below gfx cards that are low profile and can fit into mini tower PCs? The slot can be the regular PCI 2.0

Thanks guys

A:Solved: Best budget Graphics card for mini tower form factor?

The biggest problem with OEM PC's is that the power supplies aren't typically up to the task of an addon card. So it's generally recommended to replace the power supply as well. With this being a mini-tower, I wouldn't be surprised if it does not use a standard sized power supply, so that is likely not an option.

If you want to simply try a new card anyway, your options will be limited by the card size. There isn't much of a selection of low profile cards. Find the latest generation chipset which fits your budget.

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to computer, ah, specs (or finding information about the one I have)... so I don't have much for you to go on.

Computer is a Dell, with Windows XP Home Edition. Monitor is LCD.

A few days ago (around Wednesday morning) my monitor began to click on and off. The screen would flash black and the light, next to the on/off button, would flash from green (on) to yellow/orange (off). At first it wasn't that bad. When I switched pages on the internet, scrolled, or highlighted something on the page it would flash.
It steadily got worse, going from internet pages to flashing on and off right when I turned the computer on, all through the loading and welcome screens.
I thought maybe it was just the monitor, so I switched it out and hooked up my old hp pavilion mx70 monitor.

That monitor worked perfectly fine with my old tower, but when hooked up to my new one it... Erm, got 'static-y'. It looked like an old TV that had a VHS tape in the player, being re-wound. I know that sounds odd, but it was like spikes from the side of the screen surging inwards. I thought it was because the monitor was so much older than the tower. Soon the static got steadily worse, and I used it for about a day before it got to be too much.

I switched to Safe Mode with Networking on the hp monitor, to see what would happen, and it was fine! No static. Today, I switched back to my LCD monitor and put that into Safe Mode with Networking and no b... Read more

A:Solved: Monitor or Tower problem? Monitor is blinking on and off.

Video card is busted. When in safe mode, the video card's drivers are not loaded, so the card does not function at "full blast". It will not cause trouble because of that.
Dell model would help finding a replacement, but it can well be assumed that there's a PCI-E 16x slot for add-on graphics. This would be a cheap replacement in that case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121302

This is all an assumption on the most propable cause. The problem could also be your power supply or motherboard, but those are pretty unlikely.

Don't even think about using the laptop screen as the desktop monitor unless you know exactly what you are doing, how the desktop was configured, etc. What you are proposing is having the XP desktop set up like a headless server, connecting the desktop and laptop via a crossover cable (or connecting to a network) then "running" the desktop using remote access from the laptop. Not a simple undertaking.

Buy a cheap used monitor and keyboard for the desktop - it's cheaper than replacing a fried laptop!

Right now I am really annoyed and fustrated. I have an E machines Winows XP, and it is doing the same thing that it did before I took it into Best Buy. Last time I took it in, I had to wait two months for it, then it didn't work again because something was wrong with the mother board they put in and that cost me two extra weeks. I finally get it back in January and now it is doing the same thing again and I refuse to take it back to Best Buy. This is what it is doing:

The monitor has this window that always shows up and blinks when the tower is not on that says
SELF CHECK
CHECK YOUR PC
MONITOR IS WORKING

Apparently, this is pretty much nothing because I can't self check, check PC or see if the monitor is working.
What should happen is when I turn the tower on, this huge white E should show up and the user names whould show up afterwards, but it doesn't.
The tower makes the sound that its on, but the same SELF CHECK window is still blinking as if the monitor never recognized that the tower is on.
I can't do anything with this computer and I would like a simple fix that doesn't cost me three months again and the worry of my C drive being erased because I have important files that I can't back up because the computer won't turn on in the first place.

Please help me.

If you are comfortable opening up the case and it has a video card (as opposed to the video being intergrated with the motherboard) check that it hasn't come loose as well. If you have access to a different monitor you might try it on your pc also. Something else you can try is resetting the 'CMOS'. While inside the case look for a battery attached to the motherboard. I will look like a large watch battery.. take it out , wait a couple of minutes and then put it back.. If the machine is stuck in a CMOS error this should clear that.

Forgive me if this is a redundant topic but I surfed thru many pages to try and find a similar topic.Got a tower here that I am troubleshooting for my sister.tower would turn on, get to the tower flash screen, then shut back off. So I treplaced the power supply and unplugged the monitor cable from the onboard plug and I tried 2 different video cards, a PCI and an AGP style.all fans and such come on, no strange noises, and no confirmation beeps when it boots. I even yanked the HDD to gain access to it to save some data, but this tower still wont fire up the monitor. I have the orange light right now, and it never goes green.Any clues?Motherboard shot?Looks to be a Biostar MB in a CISNET tower..whatever that is!I can pick up a new MB if that's the problem, but wanted to bounce it off someone in here first.Thank You.

A:Monitor will not fire up from tower

Have you tried to "reset" the bios with the jumper on the motherboard?

It is possible that a BIOS setting is keeping the video from being enumerated at bootup.

Hope this helps,

Hi, I just got a pre-built iBuypower gaming PC with a new monitor today and I set up everything and put everything together from VGA to HDMI, but nothing is working. The monitor is still black. The only time the monitor shows something is when I turn it on after a few seconds in which it flashes its logos and goes black and then my power LED for the monitor starts blinking blue. My friends told me that PROBABLY my graphics card is not sending a signal to my monitor (I also tried this on my old computer and it still didn't show anything on the screen at all.) How do I fix this? I don't really know anything about computers THAT much so if you tell me to dissemble can you please tell me how to? I just want my monitor to show something from my tower. My tower is working completely fine. The fans and everything is going and turns on perfectly. It's just that monitor that is not working and I don't know what to do anymore after working on this for 8 hours.

EDIT - I found out it isn't my monitor. Since I tried it with my laptop and it works. It's my PC. Now how do I fix that?

A:New monitor is not showing anything from my new tower.

Why are you using the VGA output? If this is a new PC and monitor they should both have DVI.

Or at least use (DVI to HDMI) or (HDMI to HDMI).

Check in BIOS for a preferred output device setting. Read the manual. Also check monitor for a source select button.

I have a question about my HP Pavillion. I'm running XP and when I go to start the computer the tower sounds like it's booting up normally however when the monitor is turned on, the indicator light turns green then it automatically, less than 2 seconds later, turns orange..its as if the monitor shuts itself off. Also, the keyboard lights don't flash when the tower is booted up. I tried hooking another monitor up and the same thing happens. I got a tip to try bootdisk.com but I really don't know what i'm looking for. I was also told it could be a battery but again, I really don't know. Any help would be *greatly* appreciated. Thanks!

A:Tower Works but No Monitor

Hello and welome to TSG!

First, check the signal cable plug on the monitor do not have missing pins. If the monitor end of the signal cable can also be removed, check that as well.

Next, open the case and see if all your fans are working (the case fan, video card fan, power supply fan, processor fan, etc.)

You could also check to see if your video card is seated correctly in the motherboard.

I hope this helps!

Hi there, i'm having an issue where I would be browsing the web, watching Netflix, playing a game or even just going through files and the computer would just go right to a black screen where the backlit LED lights are still visible and the monitors blue ON glow is still active and I would look over at the PC and it would still be on. All noises from shows id be watching would play then cut out like they were interrupted and when i unplug the video cord and plug it back in all i get is a white static screen then it will usually go back to black backlit screen. I have searched all over to find out the issue that is causing this but i just can't figure it out. I would even hold the power button to restart the PC and the moment it would restart and be back at the home screen it would happen again. Please help!

My work PC was just reimaged (10 days later) with Windows 7. Now my onboard video card is not working but the PCI Geforce 4 MX is working as a Standard VGA Adapter. I am only seeing 1 monitor and updating the Intel Q43 display driver does not fix the issue. I went into BIOS and the Primary adapter is set for AUTO. I am going to change this to Onboard tomorrow to see if that makes a difference. Other than that I am extremely happy with Windows 7 being on my computer. It is so much faster.

Please Help!!!

I am afraid that my work is going to need to buy another video card but I am sure there is a way to get this working.

Hi again! so I had this issue before and I had help with someone saying it mightve been the graphics card. Well, I replaced it with a new one and I didnt experience the issue for a few days, but just a half hour ago it happened again, twice. So it's been narrowed down, it isn't the GPU like most of my friends thought, but I have no way of checking if its anything else due to a backup power supply being too low wattage and well that would be about the only other part I have haha. This issue is really causing my anxiety to hit new levels as I just can't figure this out, I have never experienced this before till about the beginning of march, I thought it was driver issues but I went through older and newer ones to no avail, and my monitor is just fine, I have already tested that theory. Could it be the modular power cables attached to the graphics card? Could it be the motherboard failing? My BIOS is also at stock, nothing is overclocked and speccy is reporting everything at normal temps. Please Help!

somethin is not right here....my tower is turned on but there is no signal goin to the monitor....and the lights on the tower lights is now red....one of my dvd drivers open half way and the other just wont open...it has to be the damn voltage settings on my power supply

the story is there was a shutdown in my area for almost 12 hours becuz the city needed to rewire and fix some **** on the ground.

and when the power was up again...this happened.

i thought at first it was a bios issue so i took out that little round thing out of the motherboard and put it back but no luck......

my powersuppy is a 500w antec.....and i have a gigabyte motherboard.

the bad thing about my powersupply is theres no voltage switcher....so i dont know how to adjust it...... ANY HELP well be appreciated

A:TOWER lights up but monitor no signal

You have a few misperceptions on how things work... such as voltage switcher on the power supply. You don't want to mess with the power supply.
Your problem could be power supply, hard drive, video graphics, or memory failure... or some other problem.
You can help us help you by posting your computuer brand and model as well as operating system, age of the unit, memory installed, and type of video graphics.
Further, we would like to know what antivirus software, Antispyware, and rootkit snoopers you have installed.
What was going on with your computer when the power failure hit? As that seems critical.
What was that little round thing? A CMOS battery with the number 2032?

Not sure if i'm in the right place or not so apologies in advance.
I've just bought a new tower with Windows 7 on it and tried installing it today, it's now 12 hours later and i cannot get monitor, keyboard, mouse to work. They were working last night with the old tower. The light comes on the monitor but turns to orange and says No signal.
The buttons on the front don't wnat to work at all i have to use the one at the back and i have no clue what to do next.
I thought it would be a good idea to buy exactly what i wanted but maybe i've made a mistake and should have bought one 'all in'.
Trouble is i'd bought the accessories not too long ago and i was loathe to buy new just for the sake of it.

hello there, my desktop PC keeps randomly having the monitor go black with a message coming up saying no signal however this is not all. if i am watching a video it will loop the sound also, so its just turns into an elongated humming noise. does anyone know what to do? i have taken it to a technician he said he took it apart and rebuilt it and left it on for around 2-3 days and this didn't happen. over the course of 10 days he tested what he could and still did'nt know. i got the pc back around 3-4 days ago and it's only just started happening again. i have 7 fans and a big cpu heatsink so im not sure its temperature.

the computer remains on and humming normally throughout all of this. i have tried different hdmi cables also and no difference.

what info would you guys need?

ok right now my monitor is roughly 10inches from my tower. i have heard that the magnets in the hard drives can mess up your monitor if placed too close. although i was never able to confirm this. should i move my tower? i figured 10 inches was plenty. there are no speakers even close to monitor. but i am considering buying a nice new monitor and i woud like to know before i place it where my old one was

it could just be my monitor it is old and cheap and is getting darker and darker and little lines are beginning to form.

any thoughts plz

i wouldnt worry about your HDs messing up your monitor, unless you put a magnet on the screen your okay. definetly keep large powerfull speekers away from your Hard drives they are more sensitive.

I picked up a couple Dell Optiplex 745's that are almost identical. A friend of mine has the same machine that runs Windows 7 flawlessly. I, however, can only install it and run the OS when disabling one core of my Pentium D 2.8GHz (Presler) CPU. When I go into the BIOS and re-enable the 2nd core the system becomes completely unstable.

Some basics:

x86 (32-bit)- Windows Home Premium retail (Came from Dell with XP)

System close to four years old, with format and clean install of Windows 7. Machine does run OK on Windows XP with both cores enabled. Both machines seem to perform exactly the same so bad CPU or memory seems to be a longshot.

Hi,
I read many posts about the opportunity to upgrade an Optiplex GX620 from a Pentium 4 to a pentium D. upgrading up to a D 930 or a D 960 seems good (according to the feedbacks).
Intel developed a lot of Dual Core processors. For example Pentium E 5500
When we look at the specs we can see that the socket is the same (LGA 775), and the FSB (800 mhz required) also. The voltage of the E5500 seems to match with the voltage of the D or 4 . I understand that E5500 has a smaller TDP (65 W) than a pentium D and should not give problem with heat..
My question is : can we upgrade an optiplex GX 620 from a Pentium 4 to a pentium E 5500 ? and, if it is, does it worth it?
Thanks,

A:Optiplex GX620 upgrade to dual core

Short Answer NO you cannot.
The E5500 will not work in the 620.
Bios MUST BE UPDATED Before changing CPU.
Max CPU is the Dual Core Smithfield D820 or D840 CPU  Pentium D

This happens with two batches of 7040s, one with hard disk drives and the other with solid state drives and two different model displays, U2414h and U2417h. The systems are running Windows7.
In each case the display flickers from time to time and, in the worst case, both monitors freeze, one with no display and the other with a few scattered white dashes on the black background. This has NOT been noticed on earlier Optiplex models from Dell. 780s, with a different display model, or 9020s with the U2414h monitors. As far as I know this occurs once or twice in a five day working week.
I have run the built in diagnostics on both the monitors and the monitors without any faults being found.
The 7040s have had the BIOS upgraded and the latest drivers applied as well as the latest Windows updates. I have scanned the event log without finding anything, although I am unsure what to look for.
Is this a known issue? Is there anything I can do to test the systems, other the built in diagnostics.

Did anything happen to it or did you make any changes to it between the last time it worked OK and the first time it didn't?Do you hear any beeps when you attempt to start it up?Often that symptom is due to a bad PSU or motherboard (not that that narrows it down much).

Bought the following brand new at Best Buy on 8/22/14, and trying to get setup:

Lenovo K450e desktop tower, keyboard, and mouse.
LG 22MP56HQ monitor
MS Office 2013 (key code)
Webroot internet security (disc)
After connecting everything according to the instruction of both the Lenovo and LG instructions, double & triple checking all parts accounted for and connected properly, here's what happened..

Lenovo tower boots up fine, disc drive in tower opens and closes properly, Lenovo keyboard and mouse both detected. Great so far except...

LG monitor does not turn on at all. In the back of the monitor, two things are connected:
blue HDMI connector with pins on both sides is connected to HDMI connection in back of tower.
AC DC adapter plugged into electrical outlet and other end directly into monitor.

Everything works when power booted up except monitor shows no life - no light indicator, and black screen. Monitor just doesn't turn on at all.

There are driver discs for both lenovo win 8.1 and the LG monitor, and like I said, I can insert them into the tower and close, but nothing happens on the monitor display. Best Buy said it should be no issue using the LG monitor with the Lenovo PC tower. They will charge me $100 to come out to my home, even though I bought two year Geek Squad plan, They also said I would still get charged even if they were unable to get me setup.

Seems like there is one probably really easy fix, but I don't want to pay $100 to ... Read more

A:Monitor hooked up to tower, but doesn't turn on

If no standby LED on monitor, is there a separate on/off switch on the side of the monitor?
With LG there are usually manual buttons for CH+- & vol +- plus On/Off (although I have seen monitors with no on/off at all.)
Also check for 'hidden' buttons on the front lower edge of frame or under the front (right) edge.
I would try a different mains lead/cord that is known to to work, also check for a fuse in the plug, could be missing, or isolated with plastic foil.
Even with no inputs the monitor would show a 'No Signal' sign if it was working.
If no 'standby' LED and you have a separate AC to DC adapter block then that could be the problem. All monitors I've seen have a direct AC connection though.
If it then does work, the on-screen menu will need to be selected, and 'input' changed to HDMI.

I am trying to connect an Optiplex 3040 with a 2Gb dedicated video card (AMD R5 340X is only option) to two monitors. The AMD card only has 1 x DP and 1 x DVI digital video ports, while the P2317H monitor (current "standard" business monitor) only has 1 x DP and 1 x HDMI input on it.
My question is:  when is Dell going to release a dedicated video card option that we can actually connect directly to these monitors without having to use converters/adapters etc??? This is nuts.

I have a brand new Dell OptiPlex 3020m. It has one VGA and one Display Port connector. All the drivers are up to date, yet it will not work with the Asus monitors I have setup.  I have one monitor connected directly though VGA with no problems. I have the other connected though a Display port to DVI adapter and that's the the one that will not connect. Tried different Display Port to DVI adapters, different DVI cables.  The monitors have no auto connect, So I had to set them manually, One is set to VGA, other is set to DVI.
Also checked the Bios for that Multi Monitor setup.  If it's in there, its ether hidden or not available.
Any thoughts, Ideas?

I saw on a differente topic about 3020 model (whithout the "M") and the solution was update bios to A09 version. Then apears a Video option on Bios Setup. But the 3020m has no such option.

Hello - we just updated our Optiplex 745 from Win7 to Win10 and we cannot get the dual monitors to work properly.
Prior to the upgrade, we were able to run dual monitors (1 primary & 1 extended screen) without a problem. We used a dual DVI splitter to make this happen.
After the Win10 upgrade we have both monitors displaying the same thing and the system settings no longer sees the second monitor in the Graphic or Display Options windows.  Additionally, the VGA port is not recognized so I can't run a 1 VGA & 1 DVI combo.
Any ideas why this might be happening?

A:Dell Optiplex 745 Win10 upgrade now can't run dual monitors

Dell hasn't tested this model for compatibility with Win 10, so there might be some compatibility issues.
Did you install the latest Intel Chipsets and Intel Graphics driver for Win 10? Go to the Intel Download site and let their wizard scan your hardware for suitable drivers.
If you have an add-in video card, go to that manufacturer's site (eg, NVidia or AMD) and look for a Win 10 compatible driver for your specific video card.
And keep in mind that an add-in video card disables the onboard video ports. So make sure both monitors are connected to the add-in card, assuming you have one.

To me it could be one of three things if you are comfertable going inside the computer try reseating the ram or if there are two sticks take one out and see if it will boot up if not put it back and take out the other stick and try to boot up if it will boot up with just one stick then the other stick is bad. to test the power supply see if your cd or dvd drive will open are there any lights showing? If its none of the above its your motherboard most probably a capicitators blown or something see if you can spot any dark marks like burn marks on the motherboard. Well I hope its the ram.

Can you see the POST screen to enter back into the BIOS? You may need to go back in with the manual for the PC and make sure everything is properly set. If you used F2 to enter the BIOS, it should work, but you will need to make sure the display setting is supported. If you disable on board video, you will need to get a stand a lone video card to make the change.

Hi everyone

I'm new here and have read over some of the posts and stickies but have not found my issue.

I have a Dell 4550, Pentium (R)4 CPU, 2.4 GHz and 2 GB RAM (extra added by me). I have never gotten any kind of warning or message that my tower fan was not working properly.

For the last couple of weeks, I have noticed my computer monitor brightening (a lot) and then darkening (screen is still readable), and then going back to normal. This will happen anywhere from 2 to 6 times in a two hour period.

I have been turning off the computer when not in use, giving it a chance to cool down, which I now realize was the worst thing to do.

Today, when I went to fire it up for about the third time, during the start-up, Windows shut down "to protect itself" and gave me a blue screen message to turn off the computer and restart. I did, and have not had that issue again today.

I have placed a large fan behind the tower and the problem seems to have stopped for now, which leads me to believe the problem is caused by overheating. The tower casing was cleaned inside around 3 months ago, but was very dusty. My questions:

Does this sound like a tower fan problem and how do I check that it is working properly?

Are there capacitors or something else I should be checking for heat damage and replacing?

I know I really just need a new computer, but that won't be happening for a while, so any help you could give me to keep this one sputtering alo... Read more

A:Dell 4550 monitor brightens/darkens - tower overheating?

Hi Jeri, welcome to TS. I'm not sure specifically about the 4550, but I know most Dells will post a warning on boot if the fan isn't working properly. If you haven't seen the message, it's probably not the fan.

If you're up to it (which it sounds like you are if you upgraded the ram yourself), open it up and look if the fan is spinning while the computer's running and also while you're in there dust out the computer, especially the cpu cooler and video card heatsink. While cleaning it out, look at the capacitors on the motherboard and/or video card to make sure they aren't leaking or bulging. A cap should be flat on top, it should not be "pointy" or rounded on top or leaking from the top or bottom. I've seen bad caps on a 4550 before, close to the cpu socket (between the rear ports and cpu), so make sure to look to be sure. You may have to remove the green "air duct" to be able to see the caps on the board.

Also, are you sure the problem is with the computer and not the monitor? It almost sounds like you might be having a problem with the backlighting on the monitor (assuming it's an lcd). Any chance of testing the monitor on another computer to be sure?

I suppose there's always the possibility of a a failing power supply as well. Sometimes when a power supply is flaky (power fluctuations, noise, etc) it can cause weird issues like BSODs among other things. It's possible that y... Read more
