I have a WD 120gb pocket harddrive that I ran the defragging program through. I found it shut down midway through defragging process. Now when IO try to open it, aUTORUN.N fiel appears. I have tried disk manager, the trouble shooter,to no avail. There is stuff on the trouble shooter that I don't understand,so the answer may be there.

I ran a crapcleaner brand file cleaner thru it the day before. Did I remove something with the cleaner that I needed to open this file?

Thanks for any input, for I have original content on that disk I really don't want to lose. Chip

Not so long ago I downloaded a program packed with a virus that installed many many programs on my computer. I was quick to resolve this, removing the programs, deleting any relevant files and making sure there was nothing damaging left. Since then, the only problem that's remained is that whenever I click an icon on the taskbar it crashes and restarts. Also, whenever I try to right click or use some other basic functions in file explorer it does the same thing. How do I stop this from happening? Thanks for any help guys.

When I sort a folder in reverse date order I want to see the most recent files and folders on top instead of scrolling through all the files to see the folders. Is that possible?

A:Win Explorer - can I stop it separating file & folders?

press F10 or ALT to show the Menu bar, click View | Group by, then either Date Modified, or Date Created. That will group the files and folders together by date ranges: today, earlier this week, last week, and older.

Files and folders will still be grouped together in each range though.

I really don't know how to better describe this particular problem in the title so I'll use this space to describe in more detail this annoyance.

I would like to prevent Explorer from scrolling a folder's contents to focus on a selected file or folder. Like, if I have a folder open with quite a few files in it and the file I want to double click to open is on the third row I'll go to double click but with the first click Explorer has scrolled along and the second click lands on a completely different file.
It's extremely irritating.

Hopefully at least one other person out there will get what I'm on about and be just as annoyed by it as I am.

Thanks.

I confess... I do not follow what you're describing.

With Windows Explorer, the folders show up on the left pane as you expand them, and the contents of those folders (both sub-folders as well as files) show up on the right pane. You wouldn't have any files show on the left side, so the only place you can select a file would be on the right side.

Now you say you want to double-click on a file, which I would think MUST be on the right side. When I click on a file on the right side (which by definition must already be visible, so that I can click on it) the only thing that happens is that the selected item lights up, as "selected". That's it. No scrolling of any kind.

Have I described what you're doing correctly? Or does something different happen for you than I've described, at some point in the sequence?
Perhaps you could provide two screenshots, one just before your first click on the file you want to double-click on, showing its initial presentation (i.e. in the third row as you describe).

Then, a second screensh... Read more

Hi i hope someone can help me, ive been trying different phrases for days tryin to find an answer,
im running win 10 pro 32 and the way i have file explorer set up is in List view in name order,
the problem i have is because there are soo many folders when i right click and copy a name ( ie Tech Reports v23) then right click and make a new folder, that "new folder" is thrown into alphabetical order before i can paste the name in ,, usually as i try ive clicked in an empty location meaning i have to go through the routine of right click then rename then paste,, not fun when you have between 20 to 40 a day to do,,

so can anyone please help me in switching off the refresh while im working in that folder so it only refreshes when i manually right click once ive finished working

many thanx in advance

A:how can i stop file explorer refreshing when i make a new folder?

Hi, If you use the button (3rd right on title bar) to create the new folder, your cursor ends up in the name field of the new folder.
On the other hand, if I rt click empty space and create a new folder, what happens in mine is that the New Folder appears in the middle of the pane once it is created.
(Using list view in alpha order)
In Details view, in alpha order, it appears at the top of the list as displayed in explorer once I've created it.
But in neither of these cases does the cursor end up in the name field, and I have to right click to rename it.

Are you expecting that when you create the folder you should be prompted for its name?
Unfortunately that's not how it seems to work from a rt click new folder create. A bit messy.

XYplorer behaves as I think you wish: the cursor is left in 'New Folder' in the newly created folder, ready for you to rename it.
Some here use the free version, so you might consider using an alternative file manager.

I am having this problem recently and I am not sure of the solution.
To solve the problem on the fly one has to start task manager, stop the explorer.exe process, start a new task, type in command.com enter explorer.exe into the Dos window and press enter.
This enables one to carry on using the computer.

Ways to prevent:

I have been told and have found what seems to be the solution:
Type run in the search programs and files(bottom right) click run, enter MSCONFIG, go to startup tab and disable programs that may be causing the problem.
I am not sure I have found the problem program causing this yet but I have disabled a couple of startup programs and the right click freeze seems to be happening less now??
Any comments.

I have a new (about two weeks old) Dell XPS 14 which is randomly getting BSODs, most of which occurred shortly after double-clicking on folders in file explorer. BlueScreenView blames ntoskrnl.exe, iusb3xhc.sys, iusb3hub.sys, rdwm1098.sys or some combination of those for the crashes.

The majority of crashes are 0xb8, ATTEMPTED_SWITCH_FROM_DPC. One 0xa, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL also occurred, which I believe happened when I tried to start a YouTube video. I am not sure if this crash is related the others.

My laptop has two USB 3.0 ports, one of which is connected to a Plugable 7 port USB 2.0 hub. Attached to the hub are the following:ASUS SDRW-08D1S-U optical drive (2 ports)
Logitech Unifying Receiver
Roland UA-1G audio interface

According to Google, rdwm1098.sys is probably part of the UA-1G driver, which leads me to believe that the audio interface isn't playing nicely with USB 3.0. What I can't explain is?if this is an audio interface problem?why this only seems to happen when I open folders in file explorer. When it crashes, the navigation sound effect (click sound) does fully play before the screen momentarily goes black, then switches to the BSOD screen. My computer has no trouble playing audio through the UA-1G otherwise.

I will leave my UA-1G disconnected for now to see if the crashes go away. Unfortunately, the crashes are very irregular, so it will be difficult to tell if the change has helped.

Can anyone help me find the cause of these crashes?

Whenever I attach JPEG files to an e-mail sent from my i phone 5 to my WIN 8 System, while I can view them within my AT&T webmail, when I subsequently download and attempt to open them in WIN 8, my system goes into an endless loop.  I don't know whether it is my ISP (AT&T / Yahoo) or the fact that the files are zipped (by i Phone) or WIN 8 can't handle it or?   I called Apple CS and they have no clue ... I asked whether I could e-mail the files to them from my i Phone, they said they didn't have an e-mail address that I could use (?).

The fact that WIN 8 goes into a flashing screened endless loop is most disturbing ... a reboot is required to recover the system!
Here's one of the files in question (Apple couldn't open it .. but their system (whatever it is) didn't loop).... Unfortunately, I couldn't e-mail it directly to them (thereby potentially eliminating them as a part of the problem)

A:i Phone 5 e-mailed jpeg file "loops" WIN 8

Yeah I can open it (contains 3 pictures of a gun).  I had to extract the files from the zip archive to view them, rather than try to open them directly from the zip.  I'm using Windows 7 BTW, but they are valid jpeg images.

Hi,

My brother got his system infected with the sever.exe virus, which then put the sever.exe and edited or placed the autorun.inf file into the root directory of each of his drives (external and internal)..

So just a quick example

C:\sever.exe
C:\autorun.inf

F:\sever.exe
F:\autorun.inf

Well, of course I was transferring some files and he neglected to tell me that he had that virus. So I got my system infected. Now I've appeared to clean my system up, however my 1 drive still has an issue. The drive giving me the issue is a 500gb External HDD. It must use the autorun.inf file which was overwritten by the sever.exe virus and now that the sever.exe virus is gone, whenever i try to open that drive by double clicking the icon from "My Computer" it asks me what do I want to open this file with.

I can still access my drive by just right clicking and choosing 'Explore', but personally I'd rather not have to do that.

Now the autorun.inf file I have on the drive has this inside

[AutoRun]
open=Sever.exe
shellexecute=Sever.exe
shell\Auto\command=Sever.exe

Obviously a result of the sever.exe virus. As I said, I've deleted all traces of sever.exe and ran multiple scans with both MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, Hijack This, and a few others that run off of Hirens and MiniPE. None of them have returned any trace or issues. (I scanned the HJT log @ www.hijackthis.de using their log reader).

Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.Hold down the Shift key when inserting the drive until Windows detects it to keep autorun.inf from executing if it is present.Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.Reboot your computer when done.Note: As part of its routine, Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that was plugged in when you ran it. Do not delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection by keeping the autorun file from being installed on the root drive and running other malicious files.

In windows Explorer files of the extention .avi will have an icon that is that little film strip with a screen shot from the video file. Matroska files (.mkv) only show a generic icon in explorer? How can i fix this so that the Matroska file will show the screen shot from the video file as is does with avi files in windows explorer? I have Home Premium? Thanks:)

A:Matroska File to show screen shot as icon like an avi file does in explorer

I wrote a similar post about mov files in here
Have a quick read at it (to understand what you're doing and why it's the way it is), then grab some matroska directshow filters. There's a list here: http://www.matroska.org/downloads/windows.html

P.S: Keep in mind the filter sparses the mkv file only (aka the container), it does not decode the audio or video stream inside of it. If you're only getting a filter but can't see the video, it would be because you're missing the codec (compressor-decompressor) for the video stream. I'm mentioning it because mkv files are usually encoded using codecs for which the avi container is not suitable (for example H.264 or AC3). If that's the problem, be sure to get codecs too (for example ffdshow-tryouts for H.264, or AC3filter for AC3).

Anytime I drag a file(s) in a folder window, a translucent, oversized icon follows the mouse pointer, partially obscuring up to 4 nearby items.

Can this effect be disabled? I'm sure somebody at MS thought it was slick idea, but it just gives me a headache. I haven't found a setting that controls it -- maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot. (Am guessing, while this isn't an "animation" per se, it's in the same general category.)

Thanks a ton for any clues.

I recently had to do a system restore and now my .jpg and jpeg files have a bad file icon. They still do open with the windows pic program as I want them to - but only on the admin accout, I usually surf and play and do everything else with a user account, and even if I reset everything under folder options for the file associacions it somehow doesn't apply to the other account.
The funny thing is that windows tells me in the file association menu that I changed the file association's properties and can set them back to standart "photo suite 6" - a program that I uninstalled ages ago ... can I somehow set this back to the normal winxp picture and fax displaying thing?

Basically the title. Almost every single time i move ANY file or delete any file, the window im in freezes and the progress bar freezes. Now when i create a new folder the window im in freezes also, but i'd say its only 50% of the time. The temporary solution i found was to go to the task bar, end explorer, and restart it using run. Now when i check back on that folder, whatever action I did (ie delete file) does do what i wanted, its just the freezing. I'm looking for a permanent solution to this and any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi erod49, try looking in your error logs. You have given a good discription of the problem. Tel us your system specs as well.

To get into your error logs,

Left Click on Start Menu.
Right click on Computer and choose manage.
Click on the event viewer.
You now have loads of options to try and pin down what is happening.
Expand the error tab.
Look for things in the last 24 hours.

Other things to look for are updates, has an update caused this. Has your computer autoupdated any of the motherboard drivers.
Have you tried to restore the computer before the error started or has it always been like that.

Hi.

I am buring some software onto a disc and it would be pretty difficult to install for an average person. So i have devised an instruction list on what to do in a notepad file. Is there a way so that when they insert the disc that the notepad document would load straight away so they may read it?

A:Making a txt file autorun.

I have been thinkin about setting something up like this. Never got the chance, but if youfind a simple autorun file and copy, then open it in notepad, change what it says. If i am right you should only need

[AutoRun]
open=*.*

where the * can be any name or file extension.

The auto run files name has to be "autorun.inf" without the quotes. If you want i can post one if you can not get one. You can also possibly just write t in notepad and change the txt extension to.inf

My antivirus is not able to clean the file. Should I go ahead and do it manually?

If this is some kind of dangerous file, then has it already sent any of my information (after I plugged in the thumb drive) to the party where it originated from?

Hello rappokalling

Try deleting it in Safe Mode

If that does not work, make sure your antivirus is up-to-date and run it both in Normal and Safe Mode.

Still no good? You need to visit our Virus Removal Forum
Please read ?Virus/Trojan/Spyware Removal Help ? and follow the instructions very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information in the Virus Help Forum
If you cannot complete any step, just miss it out and do what you can, but be sure to include this information in your post.

In an effort to delete a corrupt .dll file, I strongly suspect having accidently deleted an AVG start-up autorun file. This happened two days ago.....and this that time the AVG daily scheduled scan has not been done.
(My operating system is Microsoft Windows 98 second edition.)
As part of the solution for finding the offensive file, it was suggested that I download, scan and post a copy and paste of "autoruns". In the process of trying to get a copy of the scan, I know for sure that I deleted the first line of the autorun result. As a result, a copy of the present scan is shown below:

Hello, hello

Is there some way to autorun a .exe file on a Memorystick every time i plug the memory stick in?
I've got a few games on a few memorysticks (Rather than to fill up the HDD so the computer will startup slower), and it'd be nice if the .exe files that launches the games will start when i plug the memorystick in.
It's very nice if it's something that goes on the memorystick, because i use them on various desktops and laptops of mine, and it would be tiresome to make changes to every single computer.
Also, it's nice if it's not some program i have to download

Thanks.

A:[SOLVED] Autorun .exe file

Before I begin I would like to say that there are many tutorials on how to do this if you search it, please look it up before posting please :)

THIS IS NOT MY INFO I DONT TAKE ANY CREDIT FOR THIS, CREDIT FOR THIS INFO GOES TO THIS PAGE

Orignal Source: http://articles.techrepublic.com.com...1-5268081.html

1. Go to notepad

2. now think about the .exe that you want to open as soon as the memory stick is plugged in.

3. Here is the format of the notpad file

[autorun]
open=myprogram.exe
icon=myicon.ico

If the exe is not in the root then use this format
[autorun]
open=folder1\folder1A\myfile.exe
icon=myicon.ico
the .ico is not really needed its only if you have a .ico to go along with it.
4. After you fill out all of that information save it as a .inf file and put it in the root of the memory stick. IDK if it works for memory sticks though I dont see why not

5. There you go

Welcome to TSG.

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.

My OS is windows 7 and I have a "My Book " external HD that I use for a backup. Whenever I do a complete backup I delete the previous backup so that I don't run out of room. I have been doing this for years but today when I tried to delete the previous back up I get a message that says "You'll need to provide administrator permission to delete this folder" with the normal "Continue"  "Skip"  and "cancel" buttons at the bottom. When I click on the continue button I get another message that says "You require permission from .........me......to make changes to this folder" --Try Again  or Cancel    I am the one who is trying to delete this folder so why can't I???? I have gone in to the folder and manually deleted most of the files except for several "autorun.inf" files that belong to a photo album software called "Flip Books". I have always been able to delete these file before but today I can't.

I tried some of the fixes that I found online, like taking ownership of the file--ACCESS DENIED was what I got. I tried moving the file --nope---renaming the file---nope again! Can't seem to make it go away!!!

I am a Grandmother who is trying to run the Microsoft MoneyDeluxe Sunset download. I need a simple and clear direction on how to get the AUTORUN,Inf file box to stop blocking the download of the Sunset program. I can not delete it nor can I try downloading it again as the box always comes up.

It has slowed down my computer also.If someone has a solution it will save me from taking it in. I have Money 2007 deluxe on Windows XP

A:Corrupt AUTORUN.INF file

That file should not be "blocking" anything. Type the exact text of the error message you are receiving.

autorun.inf is a file that gives instructions on how a disk that has just been inserted should run. Sometimes it launches a program to install software, etc...

Is this what you are trying to download & install?
Download details: Money Plus Sunset Deluxe

If so, there's no disk involved, and no opportunity for an autorun.inf to get involved. Do you have a USB drive installed and is the program trying to download and install from there?

These are two completely different things. How does autorun.inf interfere with an online file download & install?

I have, for the past two days, been having a problem with my Autorun.exe file.

Every time I start to play a CD, nothing happens, when I place the CD in the drive, I double click the desktop icon, or even the icon on the C drive and it reads that it cannot located the autorun.exe file.

I have looked around the internet and they have told me to delete or rename the autorun.inf file. I even have software that will allow me to create an autorun.inf file.

I have used the run feature on the start menu to try and find any occurance of autorun.* and I will get the inf file. I have not been able to find the autorun.exe file.

What must I do to get it back.

Not sure if this is an annoying bug that everyone knows about by now, but I'm hoping there's a setting or registry value I've overlooked.

Here is how to reproduce and some loverly pictures.

1. Open File Explorer to a folder with multiple files and select one with left click.
2. Right click on that same file and you'll get your normal context menu.

3. However, if you right click any other folder or file besides the already selected ones, you will clear the selection and not get the context menu for the file or folder that you right-clicked on.
In previous versions File Explorer behaved rationally and a selection event was presumed when right-clicking an unselected item.

Are we out of luck until MS fixes this or is there a remedy?

Hi All
I have a rather large file system with lots of folders & subfolders. When I want to save previously on Xp operating system I'd search in explorer open the folder I want then copy the address (e.g c:\customer records\client name\job address).
In windows 7, when I copy the folder address i get this "search-ms:displayname=Search%20Results%20in%20electronic%20files&crumb=location:S%3A%5CSEQ%5C011_Estimating %5Celectronic%20files\CHERMSIDE , 17 smith ST"

As you can imagine I cant paste that into a save as field and expect it find the folder location.

Does someone know if it can do what I want? keeping in mind this is about time saving and productivity exercise so I need a simple solution. It is also on a work computer so a lot of settings are locked.

Appreciate any help

I recently bought an external HDD to back up my files. I wrote a simple batch file to automatically backup files when its plugged into a pc.
Its only after writing this and playing around with an autorun.inf that I realised that autorun is disabled in windows 7 for usb devices.

Is there any workaround for this? I only need this to work on 3 computers so I've no problems installing additional software, changing registry keys or whatever is need to do to these computers to get it working.

A Toshiba laptop running windows 7 is not recognising when I put a disk with a program in it.

For example, when I insert an original windows 7 disk, the autoplay box pops up but only with the option to download photos, not to run the exe on the disk.

I thought it might have been a dvd or photo application that was installed but there doesn't seem to be anything like that installed.

Someone suggested going into the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\ and deleting Autorun.inf or modifying the value. When I do this it does fix the problem, but when I reboot, the original value has been restored and the problem is back.

Any help with this is appreciated.

Hello Everyone,

I have kind of an odd question, I have been looking into changing file type icons when I came across an interesting conflict.
I would like to be able to change the file type icon for all .exe files to the same file type icon within a file explorer. If you were to try to do this, all icons that are associated with each .exe program becomes the same icon no matter where they are located.

The thing is that usually when I am in a file explorer the .exe files are installers and when I have .exe files in places like on my desktop, in the start menu, and in the taskbar, they are for launching already installed programs.

Can anyone think of a possibly way that could solve this conflict easily with some kind of setting or software.

I thought maybe something with shortcuts but that turned out to not work for me.
I also believe that .ico icon files have multiple sizes within them but I don't think there would be a realistic way to edit each of them for all the programs installed.

Has anyone else ever tried something like this? or have any solutions that I am not aware of?
Thank You

A:Changing .exe File Type Icons In File Explorer But Nowhere Else

File Explorer is on Windows 8/8.1, renamed from Windows Explorer on Windows 7 back to Windows95/Windows NT4.

Usually an .exe file for running a program will have its own icon, right-click a Shortcut, Properties, Change Icon to see what the .exe file has in it. Some programs may have a separate icon in their Folder in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86). If no icons are found Windows will put up a panel with a number of choices but they are more generic, mostly for Windows things.

Installable .exe files will have more of a generic icon and are of only a few types.

STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \systemroot\system32\config\components

How can I fix this?

HELP!!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance! I need to get this working TODAY!

A:STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file):

You need to install a backup copy of your Registry. The simplest method would be a System Restore.

Recently I've been having issues with my USBs. Whenever I plug them into a computer the image of the USB isn't a HD image but a file image, and I can never double click, right click explore or even autoplay (nothing happens)-I always have to wait for the window to pop up on its own and that takes 5 mins.

I brought my USB into uni and I see either two things, a hidden file by the name of GICAN (and within it something called Prasican.exe) or an autorun file that was not there before. I can delete the GICAN file but I can't delete the autorun file. Also I can never safely remove the usb as the computer says something is utilising the usb.

I think these two things are my problems because when I re-format my USBs they become normal but once I plug them back into my laptop or my desktop, the next time I bring it into uni I get the same problems all over again. (sometimes even with the virus alert). I've tried using Malwarebytes but it doesn't seem to detect it. I googled prasican and it's some kind of russian virus. What can I use to remove it?

Thanks!

A:USB hidden file-GICAN/Prasican, autorun

Hello, I believe they are malware and of the autorun type. Probably tranferred via USB to any machine it touched.Lets' upload this file for a second opinion on what it actually is..Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:How to see hidden files in WindowsPlease click this link-->JottiWhen the jotti page has finished loading, click the Browse button and navigate to the following file and click Submit. <filepath>suspect.file Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/If this is XP/VistaPlease download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear. The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Do not delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection by keeping the autorun file from being installed on the root drive... Read more

Hi, I have created a disc with an Autorun.inf file that tries to automatically run a SWF file on the disc, however the SWF file type is not associated with a program. I can obviously manually associate this file with the program I would like to open it with (Internet Explorer), but would like to find a way to do this automatically for when I distribute the disc to my team. Is there any code I can add to the autorun.inf file to do this? Or is there another file I would need to create to work alongside the Autorun file?

Thanks

A:Creating Autorun.inf that associates file with appropriate program

You don't need to associate it, just have IE open it:
"%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" "[path\]MySwf.swf"

If it's a 64 bit OS you need to use %ProgramFiles(x86)% instead of %ProgramFiles%.

So you would need your autorun.inf file to start a batch file which can then check if it's a 64 bit OS and run the file. If you put the swf file in the same folder as the batch file you can use %~dp0 to specify the path to the swf file

Code:
If "%ProgramFiles(x86)%"=="" (
"%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" "%~dp0MySwf.swf"
) Else (
"%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" "%~dp0MySwf.swf"
)

Hi there,I have SL500 and there are three partitions: SW_Preload (C: ), Lenovo (Q: ) and SERVICEV003 (S: ).The Q and S partitions are for Lenovo recovery.  I wanted to clone my HDD to a new SSD drive. Therefore, I take out the HDD from the laptop and connected it to another computer through a HDD box and USB port. However and unfortunately, the security application automatically deleted the Autorun files from both Q and S.After that, I put back the HDD to laptop and when I double clik on any of the Q or S, it shows the "Application not found" error.Just wondering how to fix this problem, because I want to clone the HDD to SSD and do a factory format soon. THanks for your help.

Im running Windows XP pro SP2. I had used norton 2006 for a while but it stopped updating long ago due to subscription registration...i thought it would still do the trick for protection...i was wrong.

So i few days back i find i cant open the C: by right clicking and hitting open or explore, or double clicking the icon itself, it would just bring up a "choose programs list". I researched this some and found it was probably due to some kind of "autorun.inf" related malware. I also found that i couldnt set folder options to show hidden files, if i did, the option would just reset back to keeping them hidden.

The guide i read suggested running up to date antivirus/antispyware software. I ran the stop sign virus scan, and found i had all sorta of nasties in my computer...only to find out to do anything with stop sign other than scan, you had to pay. I also ran WIndows Live Onecare under their 90 day free trial which allowed me to remove infections. But the problems with the C: and hidden files remained. So i did further research on this issue and found 2 guides that helped me out alot.

The first one was somewhat poorly witten in regards to english syntax. It had me locate and remove the autorun.inf file in the C: and also had me do some checking in regedit and msconfig, ultimatley I just neded up deleted a autorun.inf and turning off autorun to all my drives inclduing C: This solved my problem with not being able to open C:

Hello!

I am trying to troubleshoot a computer on my work network. I read through many of the guides and forums concerning these issues but cannot seem to resolve. Will start at beginning.

One of the PCs won't boot in any mode, safe mode, restore system to previous state, or normally. It gives the following message : STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file):\systemroot\system32\config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate. From what I have been reading the way to solve this is to use an xp cd and run recovery console. Unfortunately I am at a small base in Afghanistan and don't have access to this cd.

I have found a few recovery console/boot disk isos that I burned onto cds but when I try to boot from one of these cds it goes to another BSOD which states STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF748E0BF, 0xF780A208, 0xF7809F08) pci.sys - Address F748G0BF base at F7487000, datestamp 3b7d855c.

I would very much like to get into the recovery console to at least try some of the steps I have read in the guides but have thus far had no luck. Does anyone have any information as to why I am getting the second error when I try to boot from CD? Or able to recommend any programs that might work?

Thanks in advance.

when on file explorer, you could go to a file in the current folder by pressing its first character, for example if i pressed "r" it selected the readme.txt file
this behaviour has changed now on my windows 8.1 , it starts using the search function

is there a way to go back to the previous behaviour? i'm not sure if this happened because of an update, or after i used my account on a windows 10 machine

I have a lot of music files. I have ended up with many duplicates, perhaps because when I was learning Windows I didn't quite understand the filing system. To date, I am not sure I do! The column # which states the 'Track Number' which to me is undesirable (I have no use for it), seems to be my problem! When there is a track number - it seems to put it first before all else in the 'Title', namely before the title of the song or the name of the Band.... thereby sorting instead of the title of the song, it sorts by the Track number. Even if I change the defaults and take out the Track # column, it doesn't seem to make a difference when sorting - it still insists on sorting by Track number. The only way I can change this, it seems, is by going into each and every individual file property and physically changing this! I hasve already put many hours into this, and it still seems to be an overwhelming job! Is this not what computers are for, to make life easier.
MY QUESTION; IS THERE A WAY TO GET THE FOLDER OPTIONS TO CHANGE ALL THE FILE PROPERTIES IN THE PARTICULAR FOLDER TO DELETE THE TRACK NUMBER (#) INSTEAD OF ME DOING IT SINGULARLY? IS THERE A DOS COMMAND THAT CAN DO THIS?

A:File Explorer Folder and File Options

I would look for a free audio file tag editor. Many will process in batch mode. I haven't used one in a few years so I am not up on the current features. You might find comparisons of the utilities in places like PCMag.com or just search on "best free Windows tag editor". I have a nice sort tool called Fat Sorter but it only works on FAT partitions. The idea being to force a USB stick to sort according to file name. I don't know if there is a similar utility for NTFS.

Worm virus found in Autorun.int file on USB drive

Hi, I'm new to the technical side of managing my system and a friend suggested i post my hijackthis log here.

Yesterday i plugged one of my USB drives into my laptop and AntiVir popped up saying it had found a worm virus in the Autorun.int file. (I had previously been using the USB stick at university). I think i've deleted the virus but i just wanted to check that my system was clean.

I went through the 5 step process before running a scan in Hijackthis.
Although did not install IE-Spyad as i run firefox.

The online active scan found 10 infected files and i've attached the log to this thread. (Although i had to run my computer in safe mode as it took too long (it was at 25% after 2 hours) in normal mode)

Before running hijackthis i also updated my windows vista system to service pack 1.

I have SuperAntispyware and AntiVir installed on my computer.

Haven't noticed any major issues with my computer, only perhaps a bit slower?

Would be grateful if someone could tell me if i've managed to rid myself of this virus?

When I try to open my Sandisk USB 1 GB memory stick, I get this message ‘Can not(SIC) find script file “J://autorun.vbs”.’
This only happens when I double click on the USB drive from the “My Computer window”. If I just put in the drive for the first time, it opens OK.
I got an alert from McAfee virus scan yesterday, about a Trojan horse detected and removed. So sorry, can’t remember the name, can’t find any log file. I scanned the computer and USB memory stick, both say clean now. But when I try to ‘double click’ open the memory drive, I still get the error “Can not find script file “J://autorun.vbs”.’ and the drive won’t open.
Do I have a virus?
Should I just format the stick drive? I guess I will only loose some software that came with the drive?
Thanks,
Drew

Hi,

Every time I add a removable storage device to my computer, usb pen drives or memory cards etc Avast flashes up a warning about a virus/worm and a trojan and sure enough when I check my removable storage there are two new files added:

Autorun.inf
BV: AutoRun-G[Wrm]
Malware Type: Virus/Worm

When I use avast it either attempts to delete the file and says "Cannot process specified file" or I can remove it and the files just add's itself back onto the removable storage. I have run various scans and too be honest I don't exactly know what I'm looking for, as I'm not sure what kind of file or virus is continuing to add this autorun file to any removable storage, I checked a few forums and people thought that if you disable autorun on removable storage devices and then run a virus scan and remove the infected files. I have attached my hijackthis log, so was hoping somebody would be able to spot something that is causing this autorun.inf file to be added to any removable storage device and added again once it has been removed...

Thanks,
Mark

Me think it broke?

No matter how many times I reset file explorer in Windows 10, browsing through folder will open multiple windows and not keep the same windows at all. WTF? Is it this hard to get a basic god damn app to behave normally? Browsing through my D$ drive will spawn multiple windows. Or browsing through C$ will open the same window for the first folder then pop open a new window for anything else.

Anyone else having this issue? Any fix? Restoring defaults does nothing. I just want to keep the same window open for everything. I don't want to have multiple instances of file explorer windows while browsing. There used to be a target shortcut you could place in the shortcut of file explorer that would help out with this. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

A couple of days ago, i set my computer for a 'Administrator User Account login/w password' before windowsXP would boot. The next time i went to start up windows, either i forgot the correct password or the correct password would not work, nevertheless i could not get by the Administrator user to get windows started. After fooling around, somehow i got a user log in and got in without any password.

Everything is fine except i decided to do a full reformat(im experienced). Instead of getting my computers reformat page, i got the following:

"stop:c0000218 (registry file failure)the registry cannot load the hive file...
\systemroot\system32\config\security or its log or alternative it is corrupt,
abscent, or not writeable"

I did a system restore,no luck.

Again everything seems fine except trying to do a reformat. I fiqure sooner or later the problem will show up elsewhere if i dont take care of it now.

I realize there are many posts on this issue. When I click a Word 2007 document in Windows Explorer, I get the message "Windows cannot open the file (path\name) make sure...etc." Word opens but file does not. With Word open, clicking brings up another instance of Word (without file) and same error. Same as other posts on this issue. Issue does not occur with any other files (Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Acrobat, etc.) Happens with only Word extensions (docx, etc.) If I open Word and open the file from inside Word, all is fine.

I tried saving documents in different Word extensions, saving to different locations, but still get the error--only when opening directly from Explorer or Desktop. I have repaired Office 2007 (Ultimate Version), uninstalled Word, reinstalled Word; tried the registry fix posted here and MS site (removing Data reg entry under Word). Used tool posted here to unassociate/reassociate .docs with Word. I reimaged my hard drive using an image from two weeks ago, but apparently it started before that, because I still get the same error. I reset my index and waited for it to regenerate. I'm sure there might be other solutions I've tried, but these are the ones that come to mind.

It is a three-week-old Dell 1545 laptop, 64-bit Vista. Not impossible to live with, but has me stumped. According to all the posts in networld and here, fairly common problem that seems to have no single solution.

If anyone knows of new tips, I'd sure appreciate it.

A:Windows cannot find file path\file name when opening from Windows Explorer

A:Windows 7 64bit unable to file missing file in Hijackthis log file

It's doubtful those files are missing. More likely a bug still present in HijackThis where it cannot correctly enumerate some entries, so it gives a (file missing).

I would not put any faith in online analyzers such as that one. Much better to use these online databases

www.systemlookup.com

There's nothing wrong with any of those entries. Please leave them alone.

I see no sign of infection in those logs. If you think the machine is infected...

Is it possible to sort a folder's contents with both File names and Sub-Folder names intermixed?
I have projects in sub-folders, and 'support' files like this:

projabc (sub-folder)
projabc.txt (file)
projabc.bat (file)

amongst other projects.
I would like all the 'projabc...' items to appear together.

Thanks.

A:File Explorer Sort File names With Sub-Folder names

I don't know of a way to get Windows Explorer to do it. But XPlorer2 is supposed to have that sorting mode.
Edit: scroll down to "Folders sorted" in the table.

Edit2: Here's a Tutorial how to disable auto-arrange in W8:

I have a problem with an .exe file (PPScheduler.exe---for a Nuance program I use, PaperPort) that causes an error message (PPScheduler has stopped working), and it is not a necessary file as far as I can tell. I found an entry in the registry under HKEY-USERS, S-1-5-21-xxxxxx, Software, Microsoft, Windows, Run,PPSCHEDULER.

I could delete the registry key or change its name, I suppose, but I am wondering where the listing of the files under RUN are housed in the Windows directory. It is not a service. I can't find it in Task Scheduler. How is it launched? Other services or files that are housed in the registry Run entry above are things like DroboAssist, GoogleChromeAutoLaunch, ICloudDrive, iCloudservices, Akamai Netsession Interface, Dropbox Update)

Thanks,
Ken K

A:Want to stop an .exe file from running

From the start menu type in msconfig and then click on the startup tab; uncheck anything that you don't want to run on boot up. Also from the start menu look under the startup folder. You can also use Winpatrol. https://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol/

Hello,
We have a small office with a Dell Poweredge 2950 file server running Ubuntu 10.04.4. It is on 24/7 and wired to several workstations running Window 7 Pro, Windows 8 Pro, and Windows 8.1 Pro. The only antivirus in use on these workstations is Microsoft Security Essentials or Windows Defender.

Several days ago, a Full Scan in Defender detected these 2 items:
Worm:Win32/Autorun!inf (file:Z:\FolderA\autorun!inf)
Worm:Win32/Fakerecy.A (file:Z:\FolderA\Recycled\ctfmon.exe)
FolderA is a shared network folder/drive residing on the file server, which is also shared in its entirety as drive Z.
Defender's suggestion is to remove them, so they were removed.

However, scanning again immediately afterward, using MSE or Defender, shows the same two worms. Webroot, Avast, Kaspersky, Panda, Malwarebytes were also tried, but either did not detect the worms (though some of those programs may not have the ability to scan a network drive) or removed them only for the worms to reappear, as MSE and Defender.

Local scans of several Windows 7 and Windows 8 workstations were done, but the worms are not detected locally in drive C, only in the shared FolderA on the file server.

How should I go about removing these worms?

Thank you

I have been using this same Excel file for many years. I viewed on my new home laptop 2 days ago, using a 2010 Excel Version. It was created on 2007.

I opened it on my work computer, version 2003, and now get the above error message on both machines. The file can no longer be opened.

I have tried emailing it, still won't open.

I have chenged the file type to both .xls and .xlxs neither open.

I downloaded the program on the home page of this site, and it said no file issues, no known problems for this file.

When I click Open File, it still shows where I had the file opened (the file name in lighter gray font - but cannot open.) The original file is in black, and I can open. But, get that message.

I also tried to open and fix - and I tried both options, with formulas, and without formulas, and all it opened was foreign characters.

Any other suggestions? Or is this file gone? Unfortunately, my most recent back up is 3-4 months old...

Thank you for your help,

Current the File Sharing & FTP Hosting is SMARTFILE.

I don't want to use WINSCP as the connector.

Thanks

A:Batch File .bat to copy file from File Sharing & FTP Hosting

Hi Chacha,

Give this batch file a try. All text in red, you should adjust before running.

Code:
@echo off
(
echo.Username
echo.Password
echo.lcd C:\Some\local\directory
echo.cd /Some/server/path
echo.binary
echo.get Some_file_to_download.txt
echo.bye
) > "%TEMP%\_%~n0.ftp"
ftp -s:"%TEMP%\_%~n0.ftp" "12.34.56.78"
del "%TEMP%\_%~n0.ftp"

Hello everyone,

Firstly I would like to say that this seems like a swell enough forum as is and I am frankly out of ideas. About a year ago I had backed up a rather large series of files under one name for my roommate who was in the process of doing some "spring cleaning" on his computer. Fast forward to now and he is out of Hard-drive space damn near and has been unable to find the reserve file himself. Below is the directory under which I named and saved the around 200gb file of games and old-ROTC documents. Regardless the file needs to be found and even after un-hiding all files from the control panel, I have yet been able to locate it. It would seem to be simple enough, one would think that you could see the file name sitting above Program Files but it is not. Any one have any ideas, we would rather not have to reformat/ system restore if we can avoid it.

C:\common_ORIGINAL NEW FAGS

A:File path error/ Cannot find file directory/file itself

I used a software called TreeSize which shows the size of all folders on the disk. Thinking that the Windows OS is around 18gb, a 200gb files should really stick out with TreeSize.
