I down loaded Windows 10 PRO two days ago upgrading from Windows 7 PRO which was running fine. I made no changes what so ever and now I cannot get the printer or FAX to communicate with the computer. Any suggestions on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Yes. Goto the manufactures web site for your printer and download windows 10 drivers and run the install. Do the same for the modem that you were using for fax, and make sure it shows up in the device manager without a yellow exclamation point, and then make sure the Windows Fax software is installed.1 more replies
I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista OS. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.
I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.
Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.
My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.
Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??
Noticed something interesting with the USB port, which is near the DC jack, on the left side.
If I plug a wireless mouse receiver into that port, and if the power cable is connected also, then the mouse cursor hangs up pretty often - moving mouse, it just freezes very often, especially if the system is doing something a bit more than idling, i.e. Dropbox file indexing or Windows bootup.
If I remove the DC cable, then the freezing becomes less noticeable, but still is there.
If I put that WL mouse receiver into the right USB port, everything works fine and there are no freezes.
I could live with that, but if I attach an external HDD to that faulty port, often, when there are prolonged data transfer, that data can become corrupted, and that's a bit of a problem :)
All the drivers all upgraded and latest.
What should I do, what could be the solution?
Short description: I cannot print.
Long description: After installing Avast! and ZoneAlarm my computer has stopped printing. I have the Dell AIO 922 Printer and everything was working fine before this. Whenever I try to print anything it just hangs in the queue and I eventually get a Dell Error stating that the printer cannot communicate with the computer. It's interesting because it never gives an "error" in the print queue window...it just hangs on "printing" and never does anything.

Well, after some more digging I found a rather helpful troubleshooter on Dell's Support Page:
Dell Printer Troubleshooter
I'd recommend using it if you are having similar problems. Interestingly, it seems as if the uninstall was not completely successful before, even though I used Revo. I had to go into Device Manager and click on Show Hidden Devices under View and uninstall it there as well. This may or may not have been the final trick to get it to uninstall but the printer works successfully after using this step.
Also, after going through the troubleshooter above you will find the latest driver for download on one of the steps. Currently the driver is located here:
Dell AIO 922 Driver
Now, I think I actually had the latest driver...BUT after you unzip/install the driver I found an uninstall file in there located here: C:\Dell922\install\dlbtunst. This may or may not have been the final trick to get it to uninstall but the printer works successfully after using this step. Then I rebooted. [Note that when you unzip the driver it will ask you immediately if you want to start the process of installing the driver, but at this point you want to cancel out of that. You'll do that later...see below.]
Now, upon reboot I actually got the found new hardware balloon which is what you're hoping for to show that it was completely uninstalled previously. Note that during this process of finding and installing the new hard... Read more

When I turn on my scanner (CanoScan 4400F) connected via usb cable, it shows in the device manager with a + (plus) sign, and right click on it, I get the notice that the device is working properly, also in Devices and Printers the scanner is there.
But when I open an image editor (Paint Shop Pro) and press the Acquire button I get a message that the program could to find the scanner, so in the program opened the window to select source and the scanner was there, again I selected it but could not scan. I used the original installation CD, reinstalled it, restarted and the trouble still there. I looked again in device manager and the scanner is there, in properties I get the message "This device is working properly." I even connected the cable to another usb port, no progress.
However, the "test scanner" remains Gray.
Added here 3 screenshots, if it helps.
Any idea to solve the problem ?

Hi guybc and welcome to Tenforums.
I assume the keyboard is wireless? I believe it connects using a USB adapter, right? If so, can you try plugging that adapter into a different USB port? If it's Bluetooth, have you tried re-pairing it with the system? Being that it's only 4 days old, have you called Dell Tech Support for troubleshooting, to see if it may be defective?
I have a Deskjet 672c Inkjet computer (HP).
When I try to print off the internet it stops in the middle of printing
and I get an error message that the printer has lost communcation with the computer.
Any help I can get on this would be appreciated.
Could be a number of things- first, check all your cables and plugs.
When I connected my MDG Visionbook (running Windows XP) to a projector I got the message on the projector screen 'No input detected on RGB1'.
When I plug/unplug the projector into/from the computer I get the typical 'tinkalink' sound indicating the computer is recognizing that hardware has been plugged into it. But I can't find anywhere in the control panel or anywhere else a link indicating the computer recognizes the projector. I purchased this computer in 2007, so it is getting a little old. However, other than this problem it runs fine.
An aside : I did try connecting the projector to a newer computer running Vista, and no problem : the projector recognized the computer immediately and automatically.
So it would appear that my question is : how can I get my old MDG to recognize this projector? If anyone can help me with this problem I would much appreciate it.
You have to enable the output in the Control Panel under Display Settings. On the last tab called Settings you should see two monitors, one will be the projector, you must right click on it and it enable it.
Also on that tab it will show you the model number of your video card, you may want to post that in case we need to update the drivers or use the video card's own control panel to enable the secondary display.
You can also post the model number of the Visionbook, it should be marked on the bottom.
Windows Vista and 7 are smarter and enable most additional displays when they are connected, Windows XP doesn't.
I help people fix up their computers in my spare time. In the last few days, I have run across this same problem not once, but twice! And I'm somewhat baffled as to what might be causing it. I thought I'd throw it out there and see what you guys thought.
Simple standard desktop computer. Standard printer. All of a sudden when the user tries to print, they get the following message:
COMMUNICATION NOT AVAILABLE: THE PRINTER CAN NOT COMMUNICATE WITH THE COMPUTER.
Here is what I have already tried:
- I checked the "Printers and Faxes" window and the printer is definitely installed and set as the default printer.
- I checked the Device Manager for any problems with the printer driver. I uninstalled the printer and then "scanned for hardware changes" and it re-appeared back in the Device Manager. I assume that means it re-installed itself. NOTE: There is a problem with a network driver, but I'm not sure that it's related to the printing problem.
- I tried to print a test page via "properties", but nothing comes out. The error message appears again.
- The printer is turned on and has sufficient ink.
- The USB cable between the pc and the printer has been unplugged, plugged back in, even replaced in one case.
- I checked the print spooler. In one case it is running, and in 1 case it is not running. In the case where it is not running, the only dependency is the RPC, which is running. I can not get the... Read more
Is it possible to test the printer in another computer to rule out the possibility that the printer is faulty ? I would also like to know what is the model of the printer /printers.
There are few things I would try to fix this problem,
on the computer where the print spooler won't start in command prompt
sfc /scannow to check that one of these files might be corrupted
also it spooler issue could be problem with registry, unfortunately I don't
know that area too well.
The problem could also be usb drivers related, (before using this I suggest making restore point just in case)
Unplug all usb devices and boot computer to safe mode.
Go to Device manager, in the view Tab Select the Show Hidden Devices Option
Uninstall Human Interface Devices\USB Human Interface Devices and\or Composite USB
Uninstall Universal Host Controllers\USB Root Hubs
Uninstall Universal Serial Bus Controllers\USB Host Controllers
Uninstall All USB devices Printers. Scanners, Etc
Reboot computer to normal windows, it will automatically reinstall the usb controllers.
Windows might ask you to restart your computer, do that if prompted.
Go to Printers and Faxes and click File
Select Server Properties
Open Drivers Tab and remove all drivers
Install your printer software and now plug your printer.
Test Printing, if the printer still doesn't work R.click on the printer

I have a server computer which is always on and for 4 years
everything was OK with my linux OS. The computer stayed
on 24/7 unless the UPS signaled a power-off in case of long AC failure.
Now at random time laps the computer stops all HD communication
and of course hangs. It does not "see" any disk (except the DVD writer)
even after a cold reset but only after closing the PC from the PSU switch.
Even after that, most of the times it will see only one HD (the first in SATA order)
and after 1 or 2 tries it sees both. Then it works 100% perfect until randomly (after
1, 3 or ever 30 days) it happens again. Note that nothing changed
in hardware setup, the PC is in the same original configuration.
At first glance, there are no HD issues as I have one 2TB SATA and
one 128GB SSD setup.
Has anyone of you faced something like that? I suspect a 80%
motherboard failure and a 20% PSU failure.
Thank you for your time

My printer, uninstalled and reinstalled, won't communicate with my Dell Inspiron 1100; printer is offline. How to fix?
I am running a Vostro Dell Laptop running Vista and recently I have been having some seperate issues which I'm wondering are due to one major issue. I initially had problems with my Lexmark 1200 printer which stopped communicating with the computer. I solved this once but its immediatly stopped working again. I have now tried to reinstall the original software but no change, this time round I can't get it to work. This has in turn crashed Microsft Word whilst I have been trying to solve the printer. The same day Mozilla Firefox crashed.....I've now got this going again by reinstalling it but I have had to do this several times in the last month. My computer is now running quite slowly and over the las 6 months I have had to reinstall various programmes as they have stopped working for reasons unknown! This is not only becoming frustrating but I'm worried I may have deeper issues. I really just want everything to be working happily again (including my printer which started all this!).....any help gratefully recieved.

So over the past 2-3 weeks I kept noticing that my battery kept dying even though I would shut it down (yes window > shutdown) the computer with a full battery. The next evening I would power up and see that the battery was at 20% from full charge. This is a BRAND NEW as in <2 months XPS 9550. I checked my event log and WHAT THE H@#$??? It is absolutely filled with Dell Foundation Service and Dell Product Registration events all saying " Power event Handled Successfully by the service." Clearly it is not.. The stupid things run every 10 seconds. So when I think I am powering down my computer, it is being blocked by these services and actually just going to sleep... but it actually isn't sleeping. Its waking up every 10 seconds. Can anyone PLEASE help me determine the issue. Apparently according to update service everything is up to date.

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?
But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.
About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.
Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?
I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

Two months ago bought a Dell 8900 from Best Buy. After 20 days, it would not start, same with the next 8900 replacement... only fewer days. The first gameware as a replacement did not start at all. The Alienware Aurora worked beautifully for 3 days and then would not start. In the 8900's,,, got the blinking amber lights on the start button. Tech is coming to replace motherboard. What the heck is happening? Could it be the monitor... or the external hard drive or what? Come on Dell,,, what's up? I have a Dell XP Laptop as a back up using the same external hard ddrive.
There is a power issue with the external hard drive.2 more replies
Was given a Dell Optiplex 360 that I found out after getting a nasty virus had a bootleg XP OS
I also did not have any disks with it. I had older disks for a Dell 4600 that I used to wipeout the hard drive and install the new OS. Everything works fine except that I can not load any of the drivers from the second disk, (it was a 3 disk series)
thus at least at this point not able to connect with my cable internet. Cable people told me I needed the drivers.Any suggestions or can it just not be done.
You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.
I have a Dell Inspiron 530, XP PRO, SP3, about a year and a half old. Almost since I first got it, every few months or so, when I boot up it hangs on the Dell screen. When I turn it off and reboot, it is fine. I use Rebit to back up everything on an ongoing basis and have an extended warranty from Dell. Is there anything I can do about this, or should do? Thanks for your help.
I would run a memory tester
Download the prebuilt ISO, burn it to CD as an Image, boot from that CD and run the memory test for a couple of hours or overnight to stress test the memory.
My battery for the above computer has expired and needs to be replaced but I do not know who sells replacement batteries XBT9E1 or compatible ones.
I believe the replacement battery you are after is a CR2032. If in doubt take the flat battery to your electronics store and ask for the equivalent. They're not very expensive.3 more replies

Can anyone suggest a way to get a dell 770 printer to work on a non dell win98 system?
My friend was given the printer from his friends, but it's a dell and it's pretty muh brand new so he doesn't want to throw it away. It's also better than his current printer
Anyway, he uses the dell install disk but once it begins and runs the setup app it gives a message akin to pirating. Saying something like -this computer does not support dell , or something like - this computer is not a dell.
Can anyone offer advice. I did a search on google and dells' site and here.
I couldn't quite find anything that might lead me to an answer..?

I need help having communication between 2 pcs I have hooked up to a LAN network. I don't know much about networking but this is what I have.
PC1 - on Windows XP SP2/ZoneAlarm Demo/Host and Port declared under trusted zones/Win Firewall Off
PC2 - on Windows 7/UAC down /desired port opened under firewall
I am running a small program in PC1 which is supposed to communicate with a program running in PC2 but it is unable. I can ping PC1 from PC2 and vice-versa. I can share folders, view and manipulate files from each PC. The program howver still can't communicate and I believe it could be a network issue. Can anyone tell me if I need to do something else? Perhaps something on the router config?
Just so that I understand the concept:
What are the main steps in having 2 PCs communicate via Lan line to where I can even map an entire drive?
Thanks in advance.

This may be placing the cart before the horse, but I am helpless. I have 6 USB ports serving an APC/UPS backup, a Photo printer, flatbed scanner, occasional IPOD, and as of late an external hard-drive. For months/years, I could not understand why the UPS would often show "Computer unable to communicate with APC battery backup". Then somehow just be OK again. Then when I installed an external USB harddrive, it was permanently disconnected. APC support sent me a new/(recond?) unit and it did the same thing. I returned the unit and now they do not want to talk anymore. All of the USB peripherals will work together simultanously but not the APC/UPS. When I reboot with NO USB units working except the UPS, it works great. Then all I have to do is plug in the little IPOD and the UPS will immediately go to disconnect. Took me a long time to figure what the commonality was here. Now that I want to have the X-harddrive on all the time, it appears I cannot use the program control options of the UPS, just use as a battery backup buffer. I went around and around with Device Driver with USB properties to no avail. I was thinking of purchasing a External powered USB/Hub but I noticed the APC/USB only draws 2 ma of current. So? BTW, I tried the new cable, changed ports, tried new drivers, downloaded upgrades, etc. Zilch!.

Hello everyone, I might be asking for too much, but I would like to know of a program that would identify and print on my desk every activity of my computer, like what program(s) is(are) running, identifying and fading out when the activity is completed. I would like to follow the activity of my PC as much as I can but it does not communicate all of it's doing to me and I call that a lack of communication that should not exist betweeen us.
Thank you all...Merci beaucoup.
This will let you see what is running, pick the utility you want.

is it possible to communicate with my friend, both located at different places through internet, without any chat messanger?
suppose,i like to talk through command prompt. assuming both of us know the ip address of each others!!
Unix had a chat command. You just typed chat username (if they're on your network) or chat [email protected] if they were somewhere else. Used it a few times on our old telnet/ssh servers at the university.
You could try this
just a small batch use of the net send command
Does anyone know if it is possible to be able to communicate by voice with coop team members while playing the original Serious Sam?
Is there a mod that can be added that will accomplish this or can a separate software program be opened up in the background that would allow us to do this? There would only be 2 of us playing.
Thanks for your input!!
Ventrillo or Team Speak both are pretty good programs that work outside of the program taht you are playing. Ventrillo is much clearer that TS, but a bit more difficult to setu. As for ingame mods... I have not a clue.
I have a two year old Dell PC with Windows 7. I got a virus in my computer that by phone and computer takeover Norton located in my MBR. When they cleaned it my computer will no longer boot up. Norton worked with me for three days on the problem but we were unable to fix the computer. I followed other web sites and repaired my MBR but it still will not boot up. I tried System Repair, Check point, Image, and Dell system restore and all failed. I have tried to use the Windows install CD and all I get is a black screen with a flashing cursor and then after 3 minutes the compute attempts to boot again and fails. I tried everything to try and wipe the drive from C prompt and it will not let me. I have very weak computer skills but I can follow directions and I have wiped a previous computer I owned. (I confirmed that my CD drive is working) I also should mention I have a second hard drive on my computer that I backed everything up to.
See if you can reset the BIOS hardware/software connections and then clear the CMOS to access your Windows 7 install disc.
Resetting hardware/software connections in the BIOS and clearing temporary memory of corruption:Shut down and turn off the computer.
Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
"Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station, disconnect

Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
(If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware

Let me tell you what I did and then I'll tell you the end results. I have a comcast cable modem that was hooked to a linksys .11b router and everything was working great. I tried to upgrade to .11g and couldn't connect to the internet. I looked on the linksys site and one suggestion was to clone the mac address. Unfortunately, I was logged into the .11b router when I clicked the clone mac address button, since then I have gotten errors about two devices with same name and if I want to conect to the internet I have to connect directly to the cable modem and ipconfig release and renew everytime I boot up. Another thing I noticed, on my Dell latitude 610 laptop, the ethernet port lights are now blinking yellow and amber instead of green. I have unistalled the ethernet adapter and reinstalled it numerous times. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Just a quick guess is to reset the linksys you want to use as the gateway router. Leave your network card settings as dynamic ip on the laptop and see if you get a connection. By default the gateway is set for dynamic so out of the box you should be connected if you laptop card is set as dynamic ip. As for the two same-named units it's most likely because both routers where on and both are named Linksys by default also. So make sure one is unplugged.
I have the printer set up and printing test sheets beautifully,but when I then go to actually print a real page, I get the error message ;
The printer cannot communicate with the computer.
Try these solutions:
-Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable
-Disconnect and reconnect the printer's power cable
-Restart your computer
Now I've done all of this 5-6 times to no avail. Each time I can get great TEST prints on paper, but no prints of pages I want.
This printer is connected directly to the PC ob USB?
DId it use to work?
Have you tried another USB port?
How old is the printer?
I have installed Abit NF7 motherboards on several of our workstations. The latest simply will not recognize any IDE connections. This is normally something I don't have to worry about. All the BIOS settings are correct; everything is connected correctly. I've spent enough troubleshooting time to conclude that the motherboard is faulty. Am I missing some obscure setting here?
Use the CLEAR CMOS jumper to clear/reset the CMOS and connect only one known working drive on a known working 80 wire/40 pin IDE cable - if this doesn't work pull the motherboard out of the case and connect only the bare minimum to it, Powersupply, RAM, Video, CPU, and again only one Drive. If that fails try a different powersupply. Then return the motherboard as faulty.
Can 2 computers communicate with each other, even in a limited way, when they are connected only with a USB cable?
With the right kind of USB cable - yes. You need a USB cross-over (networking) cable. An ethernet cross-over cable also works if both computers have a network port.
Basically, the wires "cross over" so the out-going signal of one computer goes to the in-bound connection of the other computer. And vice versa. Can be a speedy way to exchange files.
I have that little yellow ! mark near PCI Communication in the device manager. What I would like to know is does it use the same driver as the modem. How do I install it? When I hilite it and press properties it says" The drivers for this device are not installed (code28.)

Hi- That entry IS the modem...only Windows does not have information to identify it correctly, nor can you use it as what it is until the drivers are reinstalled. Was it in place already, and working under your present version of Windows? One thing you can try is going to that entry in Device Manager and when the PCI... is highlighted, click "Remove" then reboot, let it be redetected....most often, this will work. Did you recently format the hard drive?
IF the computer came to you new, and you know that the modem is the same original one AND if you have some CD marked Drivers, Applications, Restore.....the drivers for the modem might be on that. Try the first way now, and get back to us if the drivers are not found when you reboot after removal.
I'm new to wifi and networking, but a longtime pc user.
I bought a new Dell laptop with XP home SP2 and built-in 802.11g support, and also bought a Belkin 54g pcmcia card to provide the same for my old Toshiba laptop running Win98se. In a few weeks I'll have broadband, and plan to get a wireless router, and hope to add a desktop pc to the network. However, my first steps have produced a problem.
The Belkin pcmcia card and software installed fine, and both laptops 'see' each other either as an unencrypted or WEP encrypted ad hoc (peer) network with excellent signal strength. However, neither one 'sees' the other through 'my computer' or 'network neighborhood/my network places'. As a result, the network doesn't do much of anything at the moment.
I have verified that both have 'microsoft network file sharing' enabled, and I have tried the XP laptop with the firewall turned off. Still, neither can transfer files to the other.
This problem must have occurred to others, but so far I haven't found a thread that explains what the problem is.
Can any experts help?

I am new with Visual PC and need your advise in enabling my visual PC to
communicate to the host (which is a stand alone machine). I've installed
Microsoft Loopback adapter at the host machine as suggested at other posted
thread. And set the IP to 192.168.1.1.
The networking type for visual PC has been set to "Microsoft Loopback
adapter" and set the IP for this connection type to 192.168.1.10.
However the visual PC is still unable to connect to the host. When ping the
host IP 192.168.1.1, it returned "request time out".
Is there any step that I missed/configured incorrectly? Please advise.

We have a machine which have two old Industrial PCs with WNT installed. PC 1 is master which send data to PC 2 slave. The two PCs communicate through 3Com communication cards installed in each PC which connected through a Coaxial cable. Now we have been facing a problem that both PCs are not being communicated. We tested the cable, connectors and 3Com cards and found ok. Some time it happens that if we shutdown the PCs and start after half an hour, we found communication ok but after five minutes communication again fails. So I need help from our experts in this forum how I can fix that problem.
The detail of communication card is;
Parallel Tasking II Performance
3Com 40 0456 004
With COAXIAL cable Connector (Old Type 10Mb/Sec)
HomeNetwork with three Pc's A,B,C one of wich (nb.C) a notebook by wireless adapter.
Two maincomputers communicating allrirght.
However PC B and nb.C (notebook) won't communicate fully. B can see C and read the shared doc's. But C can't find B.
Pinging allright but the name on B will give no reply or the overall nonsense: No Permissions.
All connected to a Experiabox which won't be visible in XP (all run on XP. Pro SP3)
All share the same domain. The experiabox acts as a nameserver by fixed adresses.
File and printersharing allowed. But no simple filesharing in folderoptions.
The funny thing is that with Advanced IP scanner two Pc's A and n.b.C appear with correct IP adresses and Mac.adresses.
But the router and B share the same unknown MAC adress? So perhaps there seems to be a problem with IP associations and names?
Turned off all firewalls, no solution.
Tried with CMD and pinging or name. Pinging again allright but B won't be found on it's name.
With IP Config/all only the pc wich sends the command will be seen.
The Netwerk has been set to Hybride.
Anyone have any idea?
Draadloze netwerkverbinding 11:

MSHOME <00> Groep Geregistreerd
MSHOME <1E> Groep Geregistreerd
MSHOME <1D> Uniek Geregistreerd
..__MSBROWSE__.<01> Groep Geregistreerd
Now this is Dutch.
Draadloze netwerkverbinding= Wireless Networkconnection
Geregistreerd = Registered
Uniek = Unique
Butterfly= the Notebook
But how could MSHOME become a Unique member, instead of a group?
How to correct this?
With Advanced IPscanner I found out that PC B isn't named but given a unknown C/R ??
The PC B is alive, but not associated with any workgroup.
However in explorer it's named correct and indeed a member of MSHOME.
All three share the same group.
Finding a PC is usually difficult and the fastest way is by a Favorite-option.
Trough explorer it fails 9 times out of ten.
Anyone who can help?
How can i make one desktop pc and one laptop to communicate each other?
The desktop has 2000Pro and is connecting to the Internet. The laptop(DEll Latitude cpx) has 2000 XP and is the one that i want to connect. The laptop has the Dell fast ethernet ( 10/100 ) base -tx pc card, and the desktop has the respective card as well. Could you please tell me what else i had to do.
Do you also wish to share a highspeed Internet Connection? Also is your current internet connection using the Ethernet connection? These will determine the best solution for your problem.
If the above items are not true in your case, then all you need to do is buy one ethernet crossover cable and setup a few settings on both machines, such as Workgoup, file sharing, IP addresses. If you want both to be on the internet at the same, and you have a Ethernet Broadband modem, then you should invest in a Router to create the network.

It's 192.168.6.* is on a different subnet so you won't be able to access it using its LAN IP. You should talk to your network people if this is a necessary task.

I have A compaq presario 5352 computer, and a Compaq IJ900 Printer. I have always had little aggravating problems with the printer, ever since it was new, but was able to eventual figure them out. But this problem I can not resolve. I was printing out a lot of documents last night & suddenly started getting messages that the printer was not responding. I went through manual & online instructions checking things out & I didn't find the problem. Now I get a message that the PC is having trouble communicating with the Printer. Can anybody help? Thanks JBR
Make sure the cable is connected securely to both the computer and the printer, try another cable if you have one.
If you know how go into bios and make sure the port is configured for bidirectional or epp mode.
to enter bios, reboot, watch for prompt saying press <key> to enter setup, find the port settings and try a different one.
I have a computer in the top of my house and one in the bottom. Is there any way I can communicate to the other computer with messages (maybe a window pops up or a message just appears on screen)? I have a standard router connecting both. Thanks for any help in this matter.
Windows Messenger would do the trick, but you will have to enable the Messenger service on both PCs and may even have to open the port on each PC's firewall. The ports that can be used by the Messenger service are 135, 137, 138, and 139
net send %name of the other computer% "message"
here is some more information on that command from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d....mspx?mfr=true
hi everyone!! i hav re-installed my old 56K PCI V/D/F modem and i cant seem to make it work. I wanted to use it for making calls. I have installed the driver for the modem and BitWare but Bitware cannot detect the modem at all. the modem uses com3 port. so are there any software out there which i can use instead? Thanx!!
What is a pci communication device? Is it the modem? I do not use the modem anymore I have a wireless D-link installed and works great! Can I just delete this from my device manger or can I just leave it their? Thaks for the help.
When I stopped using a modem, I took it out and stored it. If you take it out in device manager it'll come back when you reboot. If you disable it, it will still draw wattage from your power supply. It is easy to remove. I'd take it out personally.
I have a practice network of 2 PC's connected using a crossover cable. One has XP Home Edition which is named JimW and the other PC has 98SE and I named it Jim. I had them communicating with each other but the 98SE hard drive decided it was crash time. I did everything I could think of to revive it but it kept showing error messages like "Missing COMMAND.COM line 14" and others similar to this. I gave up diagnosing it (whats your opinion about diagnosing these problems?) so I FDISKED and Formatted it then installed 98SE again.
I went into DOS and tried PINGING them. The XP-JimW pings and DOES find the 98SE PC-Jim showing the paths in the detection process but when I go to the 98SE-Jim PC and type ping JimW it says "Unknown Host". It looks like the XP PC-JimW is finding 98SE-Jim but the 98SE-Jim PC ISN"T finding the XP PC-JimW.
Does anyone have an answer to this so I can get them communicating again?
On the Win98 machine, go into the "hosts" file and add the IP address of JimW and the name JimW.
It should already have one entry like this:
Although this is all very unecessary. Just ping the IP address instead of JimW.

I recently reformated my computer and installed microsoft 2000. Now, my printer is not communicating with the computer. sometimes the printer will print a full page, other times just part of a page. Problems most often when printing off the internet.I have replaced the cable, installed and uninstalled the most recent versions of hp 990cxi, rebooted in between installations, received a new printer from hp, checked the "encoding" window with west. eur., checked the page set up. I have run out of options. Help!!! The test page prints fine from hp so I think it must be in the communication drive.
I have been trying for a long time to figure out how to create a network communication system on my small office network. I have searched far and wide, and figured that some day I would be able to learn the language to program such a thing.
What I would like to do is be able to communicate with text, and hopefully verbally talking, between computers, and even create a intranet mail box where I could send messages to employees like email, and the employees can communicate among each other likewise.
My network is all set up and I can call my business and communicate through the various computers and share files. but I need to call the people directly by phone to discuse the things I need to discuss.
I run Windows 2000 professional on all computers with no servers, just peer to peer. I am set up with net bieu because I did not take the time to figure out tcp/ip.
I would appreciate any comments, help, or resources to explain how I can accomplish this. I have even search for low cost programs to help as my needs are really small.

My operating system is Win ME. I am currently unable to logon to the internet. My ISP is Comcast Cable. I called them last night and they state everything is fine, that I have a problem with my PCI communication device driver. (yes, there is a yellow question mark next to it) Since I no longer have the WIN ME installation cd, where can I find the driver to install. I've checked every CD I have at home. Unfortunately, my computer came with Win 98 and I borrowed the ME upgrade from my last job. I no longer work there, so I have no way of obtaining the ME upgrade CD. I checked Microsoft online, I couldn't find any device driver compatible with WIN Me. I thought I would just reinstall WIN 98, but I tried and it wouldn't let me because I was trying to install a previous version. It said I needed to uninstall WIN ME first, then install 98. HELP!!!!!
Thanks in advance,

Picture 1 attorney in court questioning a witness with an XP tablet on the podium (RECEIVER) and two attorneys sitting at a table with their client with laptops (Wireless-G) (SENDERS). The SENDERS (either one or both) want to communicate with the RECEIVER while questioning the witness, e.g., “Hey, that juror is interested, emphasize it.” or “Ask the witness this …”. The wireless is configured through a router (which is also wireless-ed to a printer server). QUESTION IS: What is the best way to communicate? I would want the RECEIVER to have perhaps Word open so that he/she could look at the XP tablet and see the question(s) sent by one or both attorneys from their laptop. After the session, I would like to save the dialog. It seems that this would be like a chat session, but without the Internet connection. Any suggestions?
This possibly might have been better in the Networking Forum.
I haven't had the Chance to use XP tablet, so I couldn't tell you if Windows Messenger is installed, (as opposed to MSN Messenger)
However if it was, it would be a simple case of using that, then of copying and pasting for record purposes.
Word would only be used for review purposes
The next generation of MSN messenger will have session recording capabilities, which you could easily set up on a wireless LAN
I obtained two old Intel 120 MHz Pentium’s from a friend and brought
them to the lab at my university and installed FreeBSD on them. I was
assigned the IP address 220.127.116.11/29 and 18.104.22.168/24. The gateway is
located at 22.214.171.124. After I configured the computers, I locked them in a
closet. From my dorm room, I attempted to remotely access the servers using telnet.
I found that I could successfully telnet to 126.96.36.199. However, from my
dorm room, I found that I cannot telnet to 188.8.131.52 server. Also, I observed
that I could ping 184.108.40.206 from 220.127.116.11, but not from my dorm room.
Why wouldn't I be albe to telnet to my 18.104.22.168 server? Also, why can I ping 22.214.171.124 from 126.96.36.199 but not from my dorm?

I recently purchased a Dell studio 15 with Vista Home Premium 64 SP1. I have it connected to a wireless Dell 966 printer.
I can print fine to the printer, but every 10 minutes I get a message that "printer communication has stopped". I also cannot scan to the computer from the scanner.
I also have a different Dell laptop with Vista connected to the printer and it works fine with no issues. I can scan using that machine.
I have uninstalled the drivers and printer a couple times with no difference. Dell's solution was to restore the system to factory defaults but after spending 2 days getting everything transferred and setup the way I want, I'd rather that be a last resort. All of the MS and Dell updates have been installed and I used the drivers from Dell's site.

There is a PC (Windows 7 Professional SP1 and all Windows updates) behind a LiveBox Router (Orange, France) connected to the internet. On this PC runs an application waiting for UDP messages coming from a server in Italy.
I installed everything one months ago and everything worked perfectly, two weeks ago it started showing the problem I'm going to describe.
The server application (Italy) sends a UDP message, the client application (France) never receives it. Troubleshooting the problem I got these informations:
1) the UDP packet correctly reaches the target PC (in France), I can see it using the network protocol analyser WireShark;
2) the application never receives the UDP packet, which seems to be blocked somewhere in between the Ethernet layer and the application layer.
3) I don't think there is a bug on the target application (waiting for these UDP packets) as it is installed in many other sites without any problem. I also tried with two other applications, explicitely developed to troubleshoot this issue, and they all show the same problem. So, all three application shows the same problem;

I'm having a problem with accessing a couple of sites from my PC which I can access perfectly well from other PCs. I have tried to access these using more than one browser and I get the same results - so I think the problem must lie deeper than with the software.
One site is the outlook web access site which I use to access my work email from home. This is a secure site and requires me to input email address and password. When I submit, the login page just re-emerges without comment, but won't let me in. It used to let me access - a month or so ago - and I don't recall having done anything to stop it or installing anything new. It still lets me access from other PCs.
The other site is a forum and this problem has been going on for longer - at least 6 months. I had to register with the forum on another PC as mine just said "unable to register user" every time I tried. Now that I've registered, the forum recognises my sign in and I can post to the forums ok. However, when I submit forms (eg edit user details) the site still tells me "error" but doesn't tell me what the error is! It's not what I'm doing as I can edit ok from work etc. ( I don't know if it's linked, but this site doesn't show me its banner ads at tops of pages, as it does via other PCs, in either IE or Opera).
So far, I don't appear to have similar problems accessing anything else.
I've tried all the standard things I think. I... Read more

Xp seldom finds dialup modems so you need to get the drivers yourself, do you know the make and model of the modem.
just recently, we issued two servers to another department in-charge of our internet services. they were to install and configure internet mail using exchange 2K in it. the other server is for the web server. btw, we already have a registered domain name.
my problem is, the two servers are on a network with a different subnet as ours. we are on class B and they are on C. how can i establish communication with those servers and remotely manage them if they are on a different subnet?
Subnets should have no effect on what you need. The DNS entries and WINS (if used) as well as the router tables should handle connection paths. You can also put entries to the servers in the hosts and lmhosts files if you want. Can you ping the servers by name and/or IP address? If so, then all is well.

I recently purchased Wondows Office 2007 through daughter's college so we could have it on her laptop and our desktop. I installed it on the desktop and she installed it on her laptop. Everything's just fine.
Last night, my daughter went to print a Word 2007 document on our Lexmark P4350 printer by unplugging the USB cable from the desktop and plugging it into her laptop. The printer shows up just fine as her default printer, but when she tried to print, it sat there for a bit, no progress window, and then an error window came up saying "Communication Not Available. The printer cannot communicate with the computer".
I tried a different USB cable (same slots) and rebooted and powered everything off, no luck. I then tried to print from the desktop, to see if it was something with her laptop and when I tried to print from PAINT, I got the same error.
I have XP on my laptop so I had her load her doc on my flash drive and I tried bringing it up in Word 2003. It came up saying it had been created with a newer version of Word and did I want to install a compatibility app to allow me to view it. I said yes, it installed, the doc was now seen but when I tried printing it, I got the same error!
Any ideas? We really need Office on these. Would a new printer fix it all? I can't imagine it would. We never had to install printer software that I recall. Prior to installing Office 2007 everything worked fine. HELP!
I have Windows Server 2003 installed on my servers.
I am wanting to implement a simple interoffice email solution for our business. We have around 15 employees and we wish to use this solution to send out mass notifications to our employees about policy changes, important events, etc.
However, I am not looking into using our domain for this. I am just wanting to keep it simple within the server. Like each user registered on the server gets a mailbox to receive and reply to messages from within the server.
Users will be connecting to the Server via Terminal Services.
I was looking into Pegasus and Outlook for this but I'm not sure how to implement them for interoffice email.
If anyone can point me into the right direction, I will greatly appreciate it.

Seems like a computer/printer communication problem. Anyone got any ideas other
than junking the printer?
Sounds like an internal printer issue if it doesn't work from multiple computers.

If it doesn't make sure the contacts in the cradles where the cartridges snap into are clean. Otherwise the printer may be shot and require replacing.
I?m running a nationalized business since one year and I have sixteen branches in different countries. I spend a huge amount of my income on my business communication. Even after spending this large amount, the results are not satisfactory. I want to reduce my communication cost, without affecting the proper way to communicate, and sharing all things among my branches. Can someone guide me how I can enhance the communication system in my business. Thanks!
It might help if you could help us understand the communication solutions you are now using for the various types of internal exchanges within the company. What are the shortcomings of your current business communication processes? Do you have hardware constraints?
COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL QUERY
Can anyone answer me for my question below
(a)What is a quantum size? Can a performance engineer alter the value a quantum size?
(b)What role does protocol benchmarking play when a purchase is made for a communication protocol software?
(c)With the introduction of new high speed network, there are expections of an enhancement in performace at the application layer. However,a user with such an expectation will be disappointed.
Explain why. What should be the research efforts devoted to address this issue?
(d)explain why a decision has to be made as to whether the measurement is based on the communication protocol or its implementation.
(e)How does the application of a protocol influence its performance.
I posted these question here because i was not sure which forum to use. Please let me know if it is wrong forum and also which is correct forum.

My PC has been wack. The folks over at the "Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs" helped me
determine that my machine is clean of bad stuff, it is just a bad DIMM. After running Memtest86+ I found
and removed the bad DIMM, and I'm running with the remaining three.
After I re-installed the three good DIMMs, upon boot-up I get a "New Hardware" prompt. It says I have
intalled a new "PCI Simple Communication Controler" I don't have the Windows XP installation
disc for this machine, and the install files are not on my HDD.
There is an unused modem in the box. But it has always been there. There has been no
new hardware added.
I don't know how to appease XP with this "New Hardware" prompts upon boot-up

Try going into the BIOS...and disabling the dial-up modem.
PCI Simple Communications Center is often a dialup modem.
Disabling it in the BIOS...removes it from detection by Windows and Device Manager.
Windows '95 w/ Canon BJC 1000 printer. My computer will not communicate with my printer. My system is set for COM PORT 1, however, when I install the printer using Canon Creative Home program, the program sets the printer port as LPT 1.
How do I find COM PORT 1, and install it?
When I try to install another Port, I get COM PORT (2), COM PORT (3). . . n but, NOT COM PORT 1.
Health @ wealth may/may not = wise.
Printers do not connect to COM ports. They connect to Printer Ports, which are listed as LPT1, LPT2, etc.
In Device Manager do you have LPT1?

After few months of purchase, all the wireless communications were working fine, I mean active network connections through hotspot and all.But after that, I guess due to some wireless driver problem, I am unable to create hotspot with active internet data exchange to other devices, i.e. hotspot is created but devices are unable to connect or no internet connection is shown (I tried software like connectify and even tried Microsoft Hotspot from command prompt). Moreover, I am unable to get internet access on my laptop from other WiFi Hotspot where my other HP laptops are able to connect to the very same Hotspot with active data exchange.More replies
Seems for the past week or so, my EPSON 640 printer will not print. When I try to print, it gives the following message:
"There was an error writing to LPT1: for the printer (EPSON Stylus COLOR 640): There was a problem sending your document to the printer. Make sure the printer cable is connected and that the printer is online. To continue printing, click retry. Windows will automatically retry after 5 seconds."
It seems there's some type of communication going to the printer because when I click CANCEL on the above message, the printer resets itself.
I've also tried to use EPSON's system monitor to check the status of the printer. It says:
"A communication error has occurred. Make sure printer power is on. Check cable connections. If a self test is printing, turn the printer off and on again to reset the printer."
I uninstalled & reinstalled my printer drivers, and they are up to date. And, of course, all cables are securely plugged in. Any other suggestions on what I should check?

The cable is working since I used it for my previous printer.

I am running Windows 7 on a Dell desktop, about three years old. I also have an HP 6600 printer/scanner.
The problem I have is that I keep losing communication between the computer and the printer. "Unable to communicate with printer" is the error message even though it's fully plugged in. Restarting the computer and printer generally will fix it, but that's an awful lot of trouble to go through a few times a week just to do a simple print or scan! Believe me, the cable is fine. Any suggestions for quick fixes will be appreciated.
