Sound Card not detected when laptop boots up with external monitor (mini dp) connected - Alienware 15 R2 (4720HQ)

Q: Sound Card not detected when laptop boots up with external monitor (mini dp) connected - Alienware 15 R2 (4720HQ)

Hi everyone.
I have an Alienware 15 R2 (i7 4720HQ, 970M, 16GB, FHD) running windows 10.
I have set it up in desktop mode by connecting it to ASUS MG28UQ 4K monitor, mouse and keyboard. The monitor is connected through the laptop's mini dp port.
The problem is that when I boot up the laptop with the monitor connected, the laptop's internal sound card (SoundBlaster Redcon 3di) does not function, and is not available in the audio playback devices menu. The intel display audio works, though.
But when i shut down the laptop, disconnect the monitor, and then boot it back up, the sound card is detected and functional, and stays funtional even after i connect the monitor to laptop after it has booted. It keeps working until i reboot, after rebooting the same thing happens.
Any ideas what might be going wrong?

Things i tried:
reinstalled sound card driver
windows troubleshoot

Thanks in advance

First, make sure that the display audio device is not 'disabled' in Device Manager. When connected through HDMI this should be enabled. If it is disabled, try enabling it and see if that resolves the problem.

Second, I would suggest downloading the latest graphics drivers from Intel. This should also update the HDMI audio drivers, and may fix the problem. You may also need 4th Generation or later CPU graphics drivers. You may want to download Intel's driver updater, to automatically search for drivers.

I have a dell laptop that has 1920x1080 resolution. However, i connect it to an external monitor that has 1920x1200 resolution. Basically almost everything i do is on my external monitor which acts as my main primary screen. Thus i do sometimes open some windows or drag a window or so to the other screen like youtube etc to the laptop screen which is the secondary monitor.

My issue at the moment is everything is way too big on the laptop screen. I want to have 1920x1080 resolution but its way too big. I googled what is my resolution on it and it shows 1536 x 864. Can someone tell me how to change this to 1920x1080? I googled what is my resolution on the external monitor and it does show 1920x1200 which is correct.

My external monitor which is my main monitor is fine at the moment with the 1920x1200. Its windows 10 but im assuming this should be very similar to windows 7 to fix this issue?

DV4 2170US Laptop Goes through boot sequence, but screeen never comes on, or even flickers. It can't be the video crd, since an evternal HDMI monitor works just fine. I already tried removing the battery and cord, and draining residual power. The laptop crashed during a Microsoft update on Feb 10, 2012, and I am trying to resurrect it for an online course, since the specs are pretty respectable. Do I need to use my USB Flash Restore drive, reset the system (I backed everything up while connected to the external screen) and see if that fixes it?Is it just a video driver I am missing? Is the cable delivering data to the screen bad?The screen looks like it did when I first bought it, no chips, cracks or scratches, so I doubt it is physically damaged, but... HELP???!!!??

My laptops screen resolution is 1366 x 768 and I plugged in a external monitor via hdmi and it's recommended resolution is 1920 x 1080. Everything on my monitor is too big for the screen and the taskbar is cut off along the bottom and when I go to full screen, stuff across the top is cut off.

First, "Welcome to the Eight Forums." . . .

Second, a silly question. Have you gone into "Screen Resolution" to adjust the added screen? If not please give that a try.

Hey guys,I've been a lurker on here for awhile now and finally decided to post. I have had my HP Pavilion laptop (Windows 7) for 3-4 years now and just recently decided to hook it up to an external monitor to help with home productivity (it's only a 13'' laptop so it was about time). I took my old desktop Dell monitor and plugged it to the laptop via the monitor's VGA cable. However, recently the external monitor (which I have designated as my main display) started flickering for no particular reason. I updated my driver and then googled this issue online. The only real answer I have found is a "grounding" issue that does not pertain to me since my laptop continues to flicker even when it is not plugged in to battery power. So, I went out to Best Buy and bought a new VGA cable thinking that perhaps the cable was old and needed to be replaced. Although the new cable initially seemed to fix the issue, the external monitor still flickers at times, sometimes every few minutes and at other times several times per minute. Now, I just purchased a new 23" HP external monitor and although the flickering is less frequent, it still continues. I tried using a power surge and separating the power outlets for each plug (i.e., the plug's of my laptop and the external monitor) but that didn't seem to do the trick. I also tried using an HDMI cable but to no avail. Also looked at the refresh rate and I can't go below 60 HZ for the external monitor, so I seem to be fine there. Both the laptop and... Read more

A:External Monitor Flickering When Connected to HP Laptop

What does no avail on the hdmi mean? It did not work or it still flickers? Do you have the laptop set to only put out to the external monitor or is the built-in display also being driven by the video card? In other words, how exactly do you have the display set up? I think you are saying you have both screen displaying an image? Are you extending to the external monitor or mirroring the built-in screen? I know the external is the primary monitor but how are you using the built-in display? I would think you would have the best luck setting it to display only to the external. The other constant in the equation is the electrical system. Have the monitors always been plugged into the same outlet? Monitors can be very sensitive to electrical anomalies. I see you use a "surge" (supressor) but the inexpensive ones do not really smooth out power; you have to use a ups/battery backup for that. Is the wall power outlet a 2-prong or a three prong? Have you tried moving the whole setup to another room or another location? Does the built-in screen ever flicker?

I have an external 4k UHD monitor connected to my HP 8470p laptop. (I project content only on external monitor and my laptop screen is off)

The settings on Windows 7 have been configured to turn off the display after 1min (my laptop is still on and never shut off or put to sleep).

After a min of leaving the system idle, my monitor screen turns off and immediately within a few seconds turns on, a blank screen appears and displays my input source (in my case would blink "Display Port" a couple of times). Then a few seconds later turns off. This keeps looping forever and my monitor never sleeps.

Can anyone please help me resolve this?

I have a Compaq Presario CQ62-209WM Laptop and I have an issue that is probably not huge, but it is very annoying. I connect my laptop to an external monitor, pretty much all of the time. I use this monitor (a Dell E177fp) as my main display in an extended desktop form. I like using the external monitor as my main display, and it is very convenient to have two monitors, but unfortunately this same issue persists, and has been this way ever since I bought my computer: whenever I have my laptop plugged into the monitor and I reboot, my computer boots up, showing the Compaq BIOS screen on both screens as well as the starting windows screen on both screens. However, once it boots up to the Welcome screen, it shows the logon on my Main display, but then the monitor is disconnected. I then have to login, wait for Windows to load all its stuff up, then press the Windows key + P until it shows the "Extend" option. Then I have to go into the Screen Resolution settings and reset the external monitor as my main display. Now it's not like this is a huge problem, it's just that I have to do this EVERY time I reboot. So my question is, is there any way to make Windows 7 remember that the external monitor is the main display? It's just inconvenient to have to deal with this upon every reboot. Thanks in advance.

Hi all,
I connected an external screen for testing a presentation (just a second monitor), and ticked presenter view, clicked extend desktop and then it correctly identified the monitors., but the resolution on the external was low. So I turned it up, and fiddled around a little, then suddenly my laptop screen went blank (probably after I clicked yes to something) amd only the external monitor now shows anything. In display settings it now suddenly has two of my external monitors, and not my laptop one listed...

Identifying them shows nothing on my laptop, and the screen being "1"

I really need it back to my laptop screen, as it's hard to do stuff when the laptop is 1m away from the screen! I'm writing this post like it...

So please help!

Edit: Oh and by the way, unplugging the screen gives No Signal, and nothing to the laptop

Edit 2: Somehow I made both monitors appear in the list again, but still only the external will display anything. If I choose my laptop screen and click extend to this, it asks me to keep changes, I say yes, then it greys out again
Thanks,
Nappymonster

Hi,

I am new to this forum and I am having some trouble with my laptop. My laptop screen was cracked, and my future brother in law removed the screen completely, and then connected an external monitor. Everything was working fine until he performed a full system restore because of a corrupted file. Now the screen goes black on start up. In safe mode a pop up states that the installation cannot be completed in safe mode and automatically restarts, putting me back at square one. Is this issue fixable or should I just throw it away?

I have an acer laptop/now desktop running Windows Vista Home Premium if it helps.

A:External monitor connected to laptop goes black after system restore

I don't have much time but this will help others. When does the display go black? After the standard BIOS post information when it goes to Windows? When do you get the error message?

I assume this may be a refresh rate problem but there's not enough info to go on.

I also don't even know what drivers I even need. Is there a way to find this out?

Actually, I would try the built in sound module (card) first before buying any add on sound unit. You will be surprised at the improvement in internal sound modules are compared to what they used to be.

A friend gave me a broken laptop. Really broken - dvd drive ripped out, squawking hard disk and worst of all - shattered lcd. I found an old CD-ROM drive, bought a new 2.5" hard disk, added some more RAM and connected the VGA port to an external monitor and presto - new lapt...er...desktop computer! It's a Compaq X1005EA too, only a couple years old.

The laptop lcd is shattered and replacing it would cost too much. The video card is obviously fine since it's been used via an external monitor for the past 9 months. It looks as if the connectors to the lcd screen aren't broken; I've disconnected the power connector but when on, the still-in-place lcd shards light up in a lovely jagged acid rainbow, so at least that one works.

Here's my question - is there a way to connect a 2nd external monitor to this laptop, via an adapter (or combination of adapters) to the internal video card, in effect replacing the broken lcd screen? This would give me the sweet multi-monitor setup I crave.

Thanks in advance,

Jacob

I'm setting up a Thinkpad 2647(T22 or 23?) with win98se for a technophobic neighbour.
Trying to set up a new dial up account, (the owner doesn't have broadband) the screen asks me to install a new modem.
Device manager doesn't show any icon for a modem in its window, but does show query marks against all the pci entries including the PCI serial controller.
Properties for these all show "No driver installed for this device", and Resources show "...do not match any known configuration".

I've run Everest (ver 1.51), and that tells me there is an AT&T/lucent winmodem present in the PCI devices list.

I've re-seated the mini pci card which is a combo modem/LAN(?) card but no change.
Am I on the right track in trying to locate the problem, or looking in the wrong direction ?
Is it a software problem of not having the pci drivers installed, or have I got a duff card ?

Update.
I've been into the bios settings, and the first thing I noticed was a mac address of the lan card, but no mention of a modem.
Went to config/network, where it showed lots of lan entries - "wake up on lan" etc but still no mention of modem anywhere I can see.
Am I looking in the wrong place ?
Do I need to go down all the .dll entries in Everest to see if there are drivers missing ?
If I identify the combo card, find the drivers on the net somewhere(?) then download them to this pc, where do I file them on the problem machine ?

You should be able to use the driver at www.lenovo.com support and download site. Just enter the full type number without the dashes, examin the listed modem for that unit, then download the driver that fits the description in the Thinkpad Matrix for that model.
The modem will not show up until you run the install of that download.

Hi, I joined these forums hoping specifically that I would find the solution to this issue with my computer and the hard drive.

I recently purchased an Iomega 1TB external hard drive to back up my files from my Laptop (Toshiba satellite) because it has been constantly showing hard drive failure warnings and messages telling me to back up my files. When I connected the hard drive the first time, it worked fine and I was able to access it, but didn't use it for anything at the time. The next time I used it, however, the usual "New device" sound didn't play and the hard drive didn't show up in the file browser. I then looked up the issue to find that it is a common problem where the device hasn't been assigned a drive letter. I went to the Disk Manager to fix the issue but the device was not in the list of connected devices. I have searched for the problem several times and have had no luck in finding the solution. The problem seems to be with my computer because it works fine on my brother's computer and has no issues.

Additionally, I have been having problems with Windows Update being stuck on "Downloading 0%" and have had to use the system restore several times when getting stuck on an update message on startup. I think that this may be the cause of the problem (and yes, I have turned on the hard drive).

Any help is appreciated, and I hope to get this issue resolved so I can back up my files.

Hey Jim101.

Sounds like the USB ports are somehow unable to recognize the drive properly. I would suggest connecting a flash drive to the same USB port and see if it gets recognized properly. If it does, try plugging the external hdd again.

Have you tried different USB ports? Just a thought.

Let me know how it turns out.

Hi, Just installed a PCI (e x1) Wireless card and Windows Vista (64bit, all latest updates) will not detect it. I have tried it in 2 PCIe x1 slots (my mobo has 2 of these) and I get the same problem in both. I have the latest drivers for the device.

Interestingly, when the power is off and I plug the card in a light shows on the card. As soon as I turn my PC on, the light goes out and doesn't come back.

The wireless card is an ABIT WLP-01 card.

Is this a problem with the mobo/bios or with vista? I'm out of ideas so I'm hoping someone out there can shed some light.

Tricky........

Are you sure that you have not accidently switched to mode where your laptop is only displaying to external monitor. you should find instructions in handbook. See if both external monitor and Main screen show up on display properties, make sure you know how to switch back to your external monitor if it does not automatically find and display on external monitor first.

if the default monitor montor setting is not the problem then your screen has failed and you will need to have your screen replaced. if you still have warranty then send it back to manufacturer or where you purchaced it from.

No warranty? then take to local computer shop, (shop around dont just go to PC World or major outlet)
Laptop displays are very expensive.

Hi all,

I have a few questions re: replacing my video card.

System Specs:

Alienware M9750
GeForce Go 7950 GTX

The laptop has been superb but last week the vid card seems to have died. After removing all the drivers it will bootup in VGA mode only and after researching MANY threads here and elsewhere, I'm 99% its the vid card.

So my questions are this.

The laptop has just the one video card, I declined the SLI dual card setup, so what exactly do Parent and Daughter "cards" mean? Is this similar to Master and Slave? Mine says Daughter card and I assume it is the only card attached to the motherboard. I mean... if this is the only card on my system why do I see Daughter on it? Sorry for my extreme noobiness I just don't get it.

Also, I understand how critical cooling is especially for laptops, and when I went to have a look at the card and be sure I can remove and install a new one no problem, I noticed a few things I need to be sure about.

What is the orange plastic / cover I see on the card? Both the dead one (mine) and the one I plan on ordering have this. Is this for heat or dust or.... ?

There was a small amount of compound (I assume?) which peeled off nicely in one fell swoop found ONLY in one spot when I removed the heatsink and copper connecting gadget leading to the exhaust port and it wasn't where I would expect it to be, picture below highlighted with a yellow square:

Hi guys,

I've been rearranging my workspace, and tried to connect my monitor (viewsonic 19in flat screen) with an extension svga cable. The machine powers on and I get a display, but the optimal viewing resolution (the monitor has a little popup message that says 1440x900) is not available as an option when I go into display settings.
When I look in device manager, the monitor is listed as a generic plug/play device. Do I need to manually install a driver from teh manufacturer? Previously, when just plugging the monitor directly to the machine with no cable the display looked fine, but now it doesn't look as good.

thanks,
bp

You'd be better of with a long high quality cable then using an extension.

Have you tried restarting your computer (restart option from the power icon) with the USB adapter disconnected. Wait until the computer boots up and is stable, then connect the adapter without the monitor connected to it. Do you hear the sound that indicates a USB has been connected? Then look in device manager (right click on the start icon and device manager will be one of the options) and are there any devices with exclamation points or unknown devices?

If all that looks normal, then connect the monitor.

Also, with the adapter connected, look in device manager under display adapters. If you see Microsoft basic display listed, right click on it and attempt to update the driver while connected to the internet.

On the other hand, if the lid is open and I work on both screens, then it acts normally.

Do you have any idea where to start from if I want to troubleshooting this problem?

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is the correct section for this question.

I currently work in a school where the teachers use laptops as the main teaching device. These devices while teaching are connected to an external TV/monitor via either hdmi or vga. By default when the device is connected the display settings change to extend the desktop over onto the external device so we will then manually change this to the duplicate mode however unfortunately the setting will eventually revert back to the extend mode.

Is there a way to force the mode into duplicate mode once an external monitor is detected by the laptop, perhaps using a registry setting?

The laptops are currently running Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64bit edition and the laptops are Lenovo E550's.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, running w7 ultimate on a Dell xps m1330 laptop. Everything looks good, but at work I am connected to a matrox triple-head-to-go device which is connected to (3) 22' monitors (3840x1280 resolution). Now when I connected it, ran the nvidia app, it found it and worked great.

Problem is I get home, no external connected, so running off the laptop with the basic resolution, I am trying to start apps (firefox, stickies, etc.) and I guess they were in other spots at work as I don't see them. I forced a close on FF, then re-started, rt clicking and maximizing which worked, but then other apps like stickies don't have that option. An alt-tab shows it running in the lower right (see screenshot), but there is absolutely no way of getting to the app! I did close the app completely and restarted, but it does restart in a location not on the screen.

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

I have a monitor that I want to get connected to my HP 210 mini notebook. What will I do in order that my computer be able to detect the external monitor connected to it. I already installed the driver of the monitor.

A:Not Detecting the External Monitor Connected with a netbook

Connecting a monitor to a laptop should be simple. Most laptops automatically pick it up and ask if you want to start using it and how (Duplicate, Extend, Screen 1 OR Screen 2).

There are a few different ways to switch to it, on laptops there's usually a " FN" Key (If no "FN" Key, substitute with CTRL sometimes), and across the F1-F12 keys (sometimes the 1-9 keys..) there as symbols. You want to press the one that looks like a monitor and it should bring up an On Screen Display that shows you choices, and while holding the FN(Or CTRL) key and pressing it again it should change it to the other options as previously mentioned.

The other option depends on what operating system you have on the laptop. Win7, 8, Vista, XP? (I assume 7 or 8)

Anyways let me know if that helped narrow it down, otherwise we'll try the last step which is in basic terms: Control Panel > Display Settings.

I recently purchased 15'' Y700. It has Intel 530 HD and NVIDIA 960M. Operating system is windows 10 (64 bit) Laptop has not been able to detect external monitor connected to it via HDMI to DVI (Monitor) cable. I have tried updating drivers for both Intel and NVidia but it has not worked. Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks,Saurabh

A:Y700 - 15 ISK External Monitor not detected

Hi Saurabh,

Welcome to the Lenovo community!

From your findings, it does look like there's a problem with the HDMI port or with the HDMI cable.
 Things that you can try:

Try the HDMI cable on another PC and ensure its firmly connected to rule it out as the possible culprit.
Consider updating the Intel HD Graphics from the Intel Websiteand the Nvidia graphics from the Nvidia Website.

If the problem remains, last thing that you can do is to press the OneKey Recovery button to restore the unit to factory settings (ensure you backup important files). If problem remains after that then it's definitely a problem with the port

Let us know how you get on.
Regards,
Shashi

Today I connected my notebook to new TV via hdmi cabel (it worked like charm) but when I tried to plug again my monitor it didnt work. Just "No Signal Detected" shows up on monitor screen. I also installed some new dell drivers today, but I have already restarted my laptop and it was working (it was b4 trying out TV) so I am not sure if it might be a problem. I tried monitor on different PC and it worked. Thanks for any help guys!

Hi all,
I have an Alienware m17 laptop that's a few years old (2.40 GHZ, 6MB, 750GB) and was looking to upgrade my graphics card for more gaming but my technical knowledge is really limited.
My current card is a 2GB AMD Radeon 6990m - is this any good? I've noticed a slight decline in the past few years. Does anyone have any recommendations? Can I get any card or are some not compatible? Lastly if I was to get one how difficult will it be to install myself?
Thanks in advance
James

A:Alienware laptop graphics card upgrade - help needed!

That card is now relatively low-end.  Upgrades for MXM3 cards do exist - the largest manufacturer is Clevo, which is the source for many gaming systems (Sager, Xotic PC, Falcon Northwest, Eurocom, etc.).  Expect around or over $1K for a gaming-level nVidia or AMD card -- they're not exactly cheap.

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

Only thing I can think of is to disconnnect the external monitor, uninstall any monitors listed and then reboot and hope the computer installs the correct drivers for the laptop monitor.

I have a Hp g60 235dx notebook which came with windows vista and upgraded to windows 10. The screen went bad so I had it hooked up to a Dell  d2015hf external monitor through a VGA cable. Everything was working fine until few days back. It would not let me connect to the internet at all. The wifi slide button automatically jumps to "Off" by itself no matter how much I try to slide to "On". I assumed it must be the Windows 10 update which must have screwed the drivers, so I ran Driver pack solution and installed all the recommended drivers. It installed bunch of stuffs and stopped. At the bottom it was written, you must restart the computer . So I thought it as done and restarted the computer. Now, it does not detect the external monitor at all. I tried to do a hard reset and the HP logo came on the laptop screen. After some time it went blank. I can see the power light is on and it makes some sound. I guess the laptop is working, but since the screen has gone bad and the external monitor is not being detected, I don't know what i should do. Is it the problem with the external monitor or the vga cable? Is there anything i can do about this problem? your help will be much appreciated. Thank you in advance and have a nice day

Hi  @babiola, Welcome to the HP Forums! I see that your HP G60-235DX Notebook is having an issue with the External Monitor. You could try using the Windows Update Troubleshooting tool to fix any updates that have not come through for Windows. This is a download that will run a check on your system and usually repair it. Please restart the Notebook twice to make sure all update have been completed!  Please be aware that HP does not guarantee Windows 10 drivers will be available from Windows Update. Please get back to me how this goes. You can say thanks for trying to help by clicking the Thumbs Up below! Thanks.

Hello all,
I have a Phillips 32" LCD (model # 32TA2800/98) that I connect my laptops to with a VGA cable. I usually had my Gateway NV53A (AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4200 series Graphics card) connected and I never had a problem. Recently I connected my Samsung to the monitor and again, had no problems. When I reconnect my gateway the PC detects the monitor but the monitor does not detect the PC. If I switch back to the Samsung it works fine. I have reset the TV to factory default the only way I know how (owners manual). I have unplugged the power cable to the TV for 10 min+. I have changed from a 14 pin VGA to a 15 pin. I have updated all drivers.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?

I've just about had it with my Alienware M17x laptop, and the Alienware Tech support "professionals".

I've been experiencing random shutdowns starting from the second day I owned the laptop (November, 2014), and occurring at most about once a week, and as frequently as once a day. I will be in the middle of browsing the internet, and the screen will go dark, the keyboard lights will go out, and I hear the fans wind down and the then the power button light will go dark. I don't get the typical Windows "Shutting Down" black screen, it just powers down all within about 2-3 seconds. It has even happened to me at the Windows Login screen, where I put in my password to log into Windows.

Suspecting overheating as the issue, Alienware tech support ran some benchmarking tests and determined that the processor was overheating (was reaching about 105° C), so they sent a technician to replace the heatsink and fan. It doesn't overheat now during benchmarking. But I'm still experiencing shutdowns, and now, I'm experiencing strange behaviors with my video card.

I have an AMD R9 M290x, and I can switch to the onboard graphics (on the motherboard) by pressing a key on the laptop and restarting. But now, when I do this, the computer restarts and throws errors at me saying the AMD card is not installed, or that the driver needs to be updated (this never used to happen). I wanted to try and just use the onboard graphics in order to try and determine if the shutdow... Read more

Im getting a message on my other computers monitor saying something like "No Input" all of a sudden this morning. It was in sleep mode since last night so when I brought it back up this morning that message came up even though it was fine last night. Is it possible that my video card burned out over night or something like that?

A:Monitor saying not connected to anything (video card?)

Could be. First of all, restart it, of course, if you haven't done that already. Try the monitor on a different computer and see what happens, or try a different monitor on the affected computer. If it appears to be the computer, reseat the video card and try it again. If it still does nothing, then the video card is probably bad. Another (somewhat unlikely) possibility is that the motherboard's PCI/AGP/PCIe slot is bad. A spare video card will confirm or eliminate that. It's definitely a hardware problem if you're not even seeing the boot screens.

When you connect the HDMI it becomes the default output device, even though it has no speakers.

When I right click on the volume control, the options it shows are:
open volume control
playback devices
recording devices
sounds
volume control options

It does not give me a properties option.

Then I went to control panel and searched for sound. Then I saw the screen below. There was a Digital Audio as well and I clicked 'Don't use this device(disable)' on it by mistake and clicked OK.

Now, I only have Speakers option. How do I get the Digital Audio option back in here? I think that will solve my original problem.

The Intel HD Graphics Control Panel does not detect that there is an external monitor attached to the computer, i.e., the Graphics Options menu does not show the "Output To" option, the Graphics Properties' Display menu shows only "Built-in Display" under the Select Display tab, etc. The DA100 was installed remotely by Dell Support (after neither I nor they could find the driver on the Dell support website, as instructed to do by the software driver download guide that comes with the adapter), so I assume that it was installed correctly. Hey guys, so i'm running B10074 on my laptop , and I connected my external display to it as well as my external keyboard and mouse at my desk so I could sit there and do the setup etc without moving all of that out of the way. I had the laptop lid shut and off to the side while I was doing this. Then, I shut the laptop down, unplugged all the external peripherals, and turned it on again. It went through the windows boot sequence with the spinning circles, then black screen. After 20 minutes of frustration, I realised that the laptop would show a login prompt only when I plug in the external monitor BEFORE i start it, and only if the laptop is closed while it is booting (when the lid is closed during boot, the Dell logo and spinning circles come up on the external display)

I further figured out that in Control Panel, it only displays the external display, its like the computer doesn't even recognise the internal display anymore. I dont know why that would be since when I first booted it up and installed drivers, I was using the internal display and everything was working fine.
Any help appreciated as well as pointers on not running into this again

Hi all,

I recently bought a relatively expensive sound card on Amazon and after the second boot of my PC with the card installed and working my on board LAN card decided to not work throwing error: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"
The card IS enabled in the BIOS and I HAVE disabled the on-board sound card.

LAN Adapter Details:
-Make and Model: Realtek RTL8137/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC
-Driver Provider: Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
-Driver Version: 6.112.123.2014
-Driver Date: 23/01/2014

A:Realtek network card not working with external sound card installed

This sounds like an IRQ problem, which is strange because modern PCs can usually resolve these conflicts automatically. But seeing that your system is a Pentium 4, maybe the motherboard is old enough to still be dealing with the issue.

One thing you could try is to perform a Clear CMOS procedure. This will force the motherboard to re-enumerate all the devices and will often solve IRQ conflicts. Note all your current BIOS settings
Shut down the computer > remove the power cord.
Remove the 3v motherboard battery.
Move the CLRTC jumper from pins 1-2 to 2-3.
Touch a metal part of the case and Press and Hold the reset button for approx. 30 seconds to discharge all power from the board.
Put the CLRTC jumper back on pins 1-2.
Replace the 3v battery > replace the power cord > boot.
Immediately go back into BIOS and reset all your preferred settings. If the CLRTC worked you will need to reset the date and time in BIOS.
If that does not work then you could try to get the 2 cards to play nice together by installing them in different locations, if you have the extra slots.

Keep in mind that when removing any card it is important to remove it from Device Manager first. Remove it from Device Manager > shut down > then physically remove the card > then restart into Windows > then you can shut down perform the next procedure.

Sometimes you can simply install the newer card in another PCI/PCIe slot and that will resolve the conflict. (You must re... Read more

Hi,
I recently purchased a Belkin USB 2.0 7port hub for my laptop. I have a Creative Sound Blaster USB (about 2 years old) which works fine when plugged directly into my Belkin PCMIA USB 2.0 Card, but whenever I plug it into the hub it comes up with an error. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the card to no avail, but theres still two "USB Audio" icons with exclamation marks beside them in device manager. There is no power issue as the hub is self-powered. There is no resource tab in properties to check if there's a conflict. It could be my lack of processor speed, but it works fine when plugged directly into the laptop's USB or the PCMIA card. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Some USB devices will not work on a hub, some require a controller port.

It's to do with USB enumeration, unsure if this affects your USB audio card/USB hub but your description of the problem tends to fit.

Hello all! This seems like it would be an easy one. I have this Acer laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium, and I've plugged in an external keyboard. The keyboard itself has a PS/2 connector and i've plugged that into a ps/2 to usb adapter, and that into a usb port (and ive tried multiple ports) on the laptop.

After being plugged in, the keyboard receives power through the usb, the num lock key toggles the led indicator, as does the function mode key, but the capslock key doesn't, nor does the scroll lock key, and the computer detects no hardware changes and doesn't receive any input from the keyboard.

The keyboard is an older one (id estimate about 4 years). it's a logitech; the model number is Y-BH52--RT7R14, and just Y-BH52 resolves to this media keyboard on logitechs website: http://www.logitech.com/en-gb/434/3371 . The ps/2 to usb adapter is also an older one, i'm guessing it came with an old dell dimension from the early 2000's, and i have no information on it currently. The sysinfo specs are as follows:

I wouldn't be surprised if a new laptop didn't work with an old PS/2 keyboard via an adapter. You can pick up a USB keyboard for $10.

Hi Forum!

I have a HP Pavilion dm1z laptop. The laptop has a HDMI port. I am trying to connect it to my Samsung BX2335 display. The display has the DVI dual link port only. So I bought a HDMI - DVI adapter.
I have Win7 x64 on my laptop.
When I start the laptop with the external display connected, the picture is duplicated on both the laptop and the external display. But as soon as Windows starts, the picture will only be displayed on the laptop, 'Starting Windows' being the last picture shown on both displays.
After some investigation it seems that windows could not detect the external display successfully. In the 'Screen Resolution' window the external display is shown as 'Display the device on: VGA'.
It is impossible to view the properties of the external display, as the option is disabled, and the display is called 'Default Monitor'.
I tried updating the AMD Radeon Catalyst drivers, but this did not help. Tried to install the external display drivers, but these installed as the mobile device display drivers.

Any ideas to fix this are highly appreciated

I have a lenovo g500s touch laptop that I am trying to get to work with an external graphics card setup, but when I turn the computer on, the screen remains blank. I can hear the fans spin up, and the external PSU and GPU fans spin up also, but the computer won't boot, not even BIOS. The weird thing is that when I remove the 4gb RAM stick, and leave the 2gb one, the computer works, the graphics card is recognized and works as expected also, I just can't play some games on 2 gigs of RAM. Also, the computer works fine with the 6gb of ram as long as the gpu isnt plugged in. Here is my setup:

OS: Windows 10
GPU: Nvidia GTX 750 ti SC (2gb of VRAM)
RAM: one 2gb, and one 4gb

Hi, Having a similar problem with a Medion laptop (Intel core duo 1.8GH and 3G ram) annd W7.
The Realtek sound card is showing in Device Manager and shown working correctly and indeed it plays CD or sound from streaming. However in Sound Control Panel the only device for playback is the speakers; and for recording only the microphone is listed. No mention of Realtek. Plugging a USB sound card in gives the same result; in Device mgr but only speakers and mike in Sound. This means I cannot do VOIP or record from streaming directly. I have to link the speaker output by 3.5 mm jacks to Mic input to record streaming. No good for VOIP. VOIP programs state no sound card found. Any ideas please?

My sound went out on my laptop one day and didn't know why...

My Acer Aspire 6920 doesn't have a sound card that can be found. The system tray says "NO AUDIO OUTPUT DEVICE IS INSTALLED". So, the hopeless person I am, googled for solutions.

I tried going into Control Panel > Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers and EXPECTED to see my realtek hd sound card thingy in the droplist, but only found "AVerMedia A309 (Minicard, DVB-T)". I was going to uninstall and reinstall the realtek driver, but it's not even on the list so I can't do it. I downloaded the driver off of the ACER website itself, but I have found no use for it if the sound card can't even be detected on my laptop.

I'm starting to think my sound card is just old, and I need to replace it?
Btw, I am not really a computer junkie, so simple language would be best

I have tried to search through device manager, control panel add new hardware, I have gone to asus and nvidia and downloaded drivers - although asus only pointed twoards realtek. A friend of mine built this computer about 4 years ago for me and I'm not sure if the audio is built into the motherboard or not. First, let me say that I am a sound novice! I recently started a vinyl ripping project. My onboard sound does not support 24 bit depth recording at 96 kHz sampling rate, so I purchased an external USB card with phono preamp. It works just fine for my project. But as long as external sound card is plugged into a USB port, it takes control of all sound. I'd like to be able to toggle back to my onboard audio when I'm not ripping vinyl so I can listen through my system speakers. I have experimented with Windows audio controls, but have not found a way to do this. Is it possible?

Running Windows 2000 workstation SP4 on a single card PC with Intel 855GME graphics.
If I boot with monitor connected, it all works fine.

However, if I boot with no monitor connected, wait for it to boot,
then connect the monitor cable, I get no signal on the monitor. Or an out of range error from the monitor.
Weird thing is if I subsequently power off, connect the monitor and
boot it still wont work. Only solution then is to boot into Safe mode VGA and reinstall the driver.
Its as if the booting with no monitor is knackering things, as if its
switching the machine into a different mode or something.

Strangely, I've found that if I leave the resolution as default at the highest it works OK. Only get this problem when we change to 1024x768 (which we need to use).

EDIT: Done some research and it appears that windows/grphics card may be turned off the output if machine is booted without monitor attached. Is this correct? If so, how do I stop it doing that?

A:No monitor connected then out of sync error with Intel graphics card.

Hello,
I have a 14.1" Thinkpad T30 with a bad screen (burned out backlight bulb and wires). I just connected a new 19" wide screen monitor to use at my desk. The images of my XP Pro OS fit the screen perfectly. But I just realized all the circles look like ovals (the image is stretched left to right). How can I adjust the image so I will have true circles? I don't mind if I'm searching the web, but I can't create graphics with this distortion.

Is this adjustable from my computer -- I can't seem to adjust the size off the monitor.

Thanks!

Hi, I connect an HP v220 monitor to a Dell Latitude D620 laptop running Windows XP Professional SP2.

When I first connected the two devices together they set up automatically and I had correct resolution on the new monitor. Now approximately 6 months later the monitor has reverted to a maximum 1024x768 resolution and I am unable to adjust to the preferred 1680x1050.

I have updated the laptop video driver and have installed the HP monitor driver and still no luck.

Anyone have any other ideas? Many thanks.

After uninstalling the monitor and all drivers associated with it I also upgraded the Bios driver. I now have access to higher resolution options. However I can't use the preferred ratio of 1680 x 1050. The closest I can get is 1280 X 768 which looks better than 1600 x 1200.

Anyone know how I can get the 1680 x 1050 option to come up?

I've had a Sony flat screen monitor successfully attached to my Sony laptop (VGN BX195VP) for a couple of years. However, after upgrading the RAM on the laptop, I can't get the secondary monitor to display properly. I have the Display settings set to "Extend My Windows Desktop Onto this monitor".
I've followed the XP display 'Help' and it shows that although both are correctly identified as '1'(laptop) and '2'(monitor), the monitor seems to be displaying only part of the laptop's display. For instance, if I select the 'Paint' program as a minimised box, I can drag it across the laptop's screen to the right and then it starts to appear to the left of the monitor and I can then continue to drag it/use it on the monitor. I've tried numerous setting changes via 'Display' in Control Panel, but I can't get the monitor to display properly. I'm using XP. Very odd.

I bought an HP 1040 dvdrw lightscribe drive about a month ago and when I plugged it in it worked fine. Burned several discs and had zero problems.

Then one day I realized that it wasn't being detected. I've tried every USB port on my laptop (I have no desktop to try it on) and it never makes that noise and registers.

Under my system devices thing, there's nothing that is not installed or has a yellow (!) sign on it.

I even just reformatted my laptop reinstalling Windows XP and made sure all the chipset/intel/ricoh type drivers were installed and they are.

Still nothing.

I have external HD's that I plug in and they work fine.

It's just the dvdrw.

I don't know what drivers I would need because there were none with the burner when I bought it. Just a nero disc that had no software for the burner on it.

Any help? This is very frustrating.
