Windows 10 file explorer opening multiple windows..really MS? File explorer?!

Q: Windows 10 file explorer opening multiple windows..really MS? File explorer?!

No matter how many times I reset file explorer in Windows 10, browsing through folder will open multiple windows and not keep the same windows at all. WTF? Is it this hard to get a basic god damn app to behave normally? Browsing through my D$ drive will spawn multiple windows. Or browsing through C$ will open the same window for the first folder then pop open a new window for anything else.

Anyone else having this issue? Any fix? Restoring defaults does nothing. I just want to keep the same window open for everything. I don't want to have multiple instances of file explorer windows while browsing. There used to be a target shortcut you could place in the shortcut of file explorer that would help out with this. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Go to the "real" control panel, and open up "File Explorer Options". On the General tab make sure that the radio button is set to "open each folder in the same window".

I realize there are many posts on this issue. When I click a Word 2007 document in Windows Explorer, I get the message "Windows cannot open the file (path\name) make sure...etc." Word opens but file does not. With Word open, clicking brings up another instance of Word (without file) and same error. Same as other posts on this issue. Issue does not occur with any other files (Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Acrobat, etc.) Happens with only Word extensions (docx, etc.) If I open Word and open the file from inside Word, all is fine.

I tried saving documents in different Word extensions, saving to different locations, but still get the error--only when opening directly from Explorer or Desktop. I have repaired Office 2007 (Ultimate Version), uninstalled Word, reinstalled Word; tried the registry fix posted here and MS site (removing Data reg entry under Word). Used tool posted here to unassociate/reassociate .docs with Word. I reimaged my hard drive using an image from two weeks ago, but apparently it started before that, because I still get the same error. I reset my index and waited for it to regenerate. I'm sure there might be other solutions I've tried, but these are the ones that come to mind.

It is a three-week-old Dell 1545 laptop, 64-bit Vista. Not impossible to live with, but has me stumped. According to all the posts in networld and here, fairly common problem that seems to have no single solution.

If anyone knows of new tips, I'd sure appreciate it.

A:Windows cannot find file path\file name when opening from Windows Explorer

Error is "cannot find (path\name)...before someone yells. Also, thorough scan for malicious software, trojans, etc. Do not have BSPlayer, whatever that is. Also, if I search for the document in the menu, I can't open it from there either.

I have a file on my desktop folder where I keep anything that I've downloaded. its a pretty hefty file but its never caused any problems for me until now. when I open it, I have about 5 seconds before a message box appears that says "windows explorer has stopped working" and it has to restart, closing any explorer windows. no other file does this and it only just started the other day. I haven't downloaded anything recently that could cause this. I've tried deleting it but I have to permanently delete the entire folder because it's too big for the recycle bin. I don' want to delete it in case I delete something that I would prefer to keep, and I can't move anything out of it because it crashes before I can C+P or move the file. Any help would be appreciated

After reading up for possible causes on these forums I tried disabling right click context menu's in certain programs. This is my first time on the forums, so I hope I don't screw this up. I have searched the forums and not found an answer to this problem, so I hope I'm not re-asking an old question...

I am running Windows Seven Professional 64-bit and Windows Update isn't showing any more possible updates.

My computer is a Dell Precision M90 laptop with a Intel Core2 Duo 2.0GHz processor.

Problem:
When I use Windows Explorer to open files that are associated with the program SolidWorks I receive the message: "There was a problem sending the command to the program."

I am running SolidWorks 2010 Professional SP0 which is a 3D modeling program for mechanical engineering. The program ran under XP without this issue.

I only receive this message if there is not an instance of SolidWorks running. Even after I receive this message, SolidWorks still loads and opens the file I selected through Windows Explorer.

This problem occurs no matter where the file is located (network or local).

This problem doesn't keep me from getting my work accomplished, but it is a bit of nuisance. Any help that anyone could offer would be much appreciated.

I'm including a screen capture of the message.

A:Error when opening a file in Windows Explorer

Hey. Nicely laid out explanation. Refreshing.

You could very well try installing the software again using compatibility mode for XP SP3.

To do so, right click on the installer's .exe file and choose properties. There's a compatibility tab to go to. I trust by my estimation of your intelligence that you can figure out the rest.

If it is on CD or DVD, copy entire contents to HDD first. Then do as I've outlined.

After, run the .exe and install. Might be better to uninstall original attempt prior to new install.

Good luck and let us know if this works for you. Hopefully you make some great designs. heh heh

Some time yesterday my PC began acting strangely. Every time I open Explorer, I see "Working on it..." and have to wait several seconds before I can do anything. In addition, any changes to the file structure (deleting files, copying, moving, etc.) cause another freeze. This occurs on all drives, SSD or HDD.

There are no error messages in Event Viewer, no problems reported by SFC /SCANNOW, and no file system errors reported by CHKDSK. Any advice?

A:Windows Explorer freezes when opening and after every file change

Addendum: If I launch Explorer from "This PC" I see the "Working on it" text. If I launch via the task bar shortcut, it freezes quietly, and loads Explorer after 10-15 seconds. Accessing files through the command prompt has no delay, which leads me to believe this is an issue with Explorer. I tried rebuilding the search index, but that had no effect.

A:Windows explorer crash while opening folders/file

It may be related to some Explorer extension that was installed and crashing on network drives? Try disabling installed programs "shell integration" as much as you can to test.

Also, you probably want to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1, as it might fix something related to this crash, in addition to some other minor bugfixes.

I'm about to tear out my hair. First Windows Explorer keeps stopping, searches for solution then restarts. About the time this problem, I noticed that Windows Explorer will change the original creation date on some of my files. It might be all files in folder or just certain types. I've yet to make a connection with when this is happening or what is causing it. Not necessarily when Windows Explorer stops. It's difficult when you can't tell which is the oldest/newest file in a folder.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, which I keep updated, McAfee, AntiMalware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware, also all updated.

I'm begging! Can someone help me please?

Thanks,

Hi. I'm having a problem with multiple Windows Explorer windows opening when I click on folders in the Windows Explorer window; for example, if I want to get to my iTunes songs, I click on "C:" on the left side of the Windows Explorer window and then "Users" on the right side. When I click on "Users," a second window opens up with my name, Jonathan, as one of the folders. When I click on "Jonathan," a third window opens with the "My Music" folder in the new window. I then click on "My Music," which opens up a fourth window that brings me to my iTunes folder. When I click on the iTunes folder, a fifth window opens, bringing me to the "iTunes Media" folder. When I click on that folder, a sixth window opens, bringing me to the "Music" folder. When I click on the "Music" folder, a seventh window opens, bringing me to a list of the names of the artists in my iTunes library. I then click on an artist name, which opens an eighth window with the folder "Unknown Album" in it. I click on "Unknown Album" and a 9th window opens with a list of the songs.

I then have to go back and close all the windows I don't need. And it doesn't just happen with iTunes; it happens with everything.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hello Everyone.

I use Windows 8.1.

Until few days ago, everything was working fine. No idea what happened but whenever I open the File Explorer/Windows Explorer, it always opens minimized. Earlier I just needed to maximize it and close it so that when the next time I open it, it opens maximized. But when I do that now, it still opens minimized.

Not just that. I like to have my files and folders view to be as "large icons". But, its all in "details" view now. Earlier if something like this happened, I would change it once to "large icons" and it remained intact upon my viewing next time. However, it doesn't happen now. Inspite of changing the view settings to "large icons", they still open "details" view.

Any idea, how to solve both the issues? It would be very helpful.

Hi All

In windows 7, when I copy the folder address i get this "search-ms:displayname=Search%20Results%20in%20electronic%20files&crumb=location:S%3A%5CSEQ%5C011_Estimating %5Celectronic%20files\CHERMSIDE , 17 smith ST"

As you can imagine I cant paste that into a save as field and expect it find the folder location.

Does someone know if it can do what I want? keeping in mind this is about time saving and productivity exercise so I need a simple solution. It is also on a work computer so a lot of settings are locked.

I am trying to use a .bat file so that when my computer starts, it automatically opens some programs.
It's working fine in some ways, but I can't get Explorer 8 to open 3 different sites. It only ever opens the last one in the list.
Is there a resource for learning how to write these scripts or does anyone know how to do it?

I have a petty little question.

Is there any way to make File Explorer open in the same position and the same size as when it was last closed.

Currently, it always opens in the same position and size and I almost always want to resize it.

A:Opening File Explorer

Hello dsscottage,

Not sure I follow that.

By default, File Explorer already does open in the same size and position as when it was last closed.

If you want to resize it, then you should be able to.

File Explorer not opening maximized. Its shortcut ignores the 'Run' setting and always prefers to open the window as 'normal window'. I have tried this:
1 - Close any open File Explorer windows. The shortcut 'Run' setting is 'Maximized'. Click on shortcut. It opens as normal window. Maximize the window. Close it. Click on shortcut. It opens maximized THAT ONE TIME. The next click on the shortcut - it opens as a normal window again, and subsequently.
2 - Close any open File Explorer windows. The shortcut 'Run' setting is 'normal window'. The behaviour is the same as above. Change the shortcut 'Run' setting to 'Maximized' and repeat the test. No change in behaviour.
3 - Close any open File Explorer windows. The shortcut 'Run' setting is 'Maximized'. Click on shortcut. It opens as normal window. Instead of maximizing it resize it to fill the screen until it maximizes automatically and close it. The behaviour is the same as above.
4 - I added the following DWORD value to the registry:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer] "MaximizeApps"=dword:00000001
That made no difference.

This was happening before I reinstalled Windows 8.1 update 1 from scratch (for a different reason). It is still happening.

I have a new-ish PC running Windows XP with Internet Explorer 7 installed.

There is a website I use from which I need to download .csv files. When I open it, it opens in Excel, but rather than have all the columns separated, everything appears separated by commas in just the first column. I know I can then get it into columns by doing the whole 'Text to Columns' thing, but I would rather it just opened correctly in the first place. I didn't have a problem on my previous PC.

I think it is an IE set-up issue as I have tried opening using Opera and it seems to open correctly.

Any idea

All my other documents except .doc & the Oo one, which is: .odt have opened up successfully. I downloaded Oo 3.4.1 which is the latest one. It will by right clicking & selecting 'Open with', after a long period open in Wordpad but a lot of the lines have jumped out of column. I tried right clicking, selecting 'Share with' & 'Specific people' & typed in 'Administrator'' along with my User name of robinp. It didn't solve the problem. I'm going to have a try at right clicking & selecting 'Properties'>'Security', etc. & trying that route. Any suggestions?

So we have a label printing program that the manufacturer built in a nice little "If WindowsVersion > 7 Then t('.'t)" message. We upgraded all officially supported by Dell machines to Windows 10, and we tested the program with Compatibility Mode set, everything worked fine. However, one of our users reported an issue we didn't test; if they open a label file (.lab) from Explorer, it completely ignores the compatibility settings that are on her machine. The settings were changed for all users, not just her, so it's not the problem. Does anybody have suggestions on where to look?

I'm going to be digging into the registry myself, just hoping somebody's seen this before or can help narrow my search. I'm going to start with the file association and see if maybe it's launching a different exe or something...but I don't think it is.

Hello again kind people

I have recently updated my anti virus software to the free AVG. This, once updated, found a virus and deleted it. Today when I open any window that utilises windows explorer (my computer, my documents...) I get a 'virus detected from AVG resident shield. Specifically it says

While opening file: C:\ WINDOWS\system32\msxpe.dll
Trojan horse Clicker.2.l

when trying to delete/heal/move_to_vault this thing it says "requested action not available for this object". All I can do is click on the continue button and the warning goes away.

I have looked for it myself and cannot find it in the location given. Yet everytime I open a new window the virus detected warning returns in the sme state.

I ran TDS-3 with the latest Radius definitions. It found two results which I deleted. The log is below if it is of any use.

A:AVG virus alert when opening file explorer

First I would suggest getting rid of one of the antivirus programs. They can cause problems when running together. So uninstall one of them now.

Download KillBox (http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe). Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msxpe.dll

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Restart and see if you still have that problem now.

Did anyone ever hear of this? How can I stop this and make the program with the selected file type start automatically in front?

Any suggestions welcomed! Thanks.

Recently a change occured (after an update?).
I have a folder containing only 6 shortcuts, linking to devices or to drives, connected to devices, in my home network. Opening this folder takes about 30 sec. It has to do with those shortcuts that link to drives, connected to devices, which are off. Apparently, file explorer, when trying to present the shortcuts, also tries to get some info from those drives. After failing, file explorer nevertheless decides to present the shortcut after long waiting time.
This effect has come recently in W10. In most cases, the effect is there, but in a few cases, the map is opening normally.

A:File explorer slow in opening folder with shortcuts

Additional info:
When the folder is closed for a longer period, then opening gives an instantaneous result.
After closing the folder, and opening again some time after closing, the shortcuts only show up after ca 30 sec.

So I recently re-installed windows 8.1 pro and I've been noticing that when I open file explorer or anything from the win + x menu I get maybe a second (probably less) delay that's not there if I were to search for it or open it basically anywhere else. File explorer has a delay no matter where I open it, but if I were to open one of my recent files from the jump list, it opens quickly. I know this seems like a weird and trivial issue but I just wanna know if this is normal or not.

Hi there.

If I first open MS Excel from Program Files then open a file from the icon/File menu, then my files open fine and Excel loads my personal.xls file and other add-ins.

If, however, I navigate to a file via Windows Explorer and double-click to open any excel file, then it appears that the add-ins don't always load and/or Personal.xls may or may not load either.

This behaviour is always the case, i.e. never can I do it this way and opening via Explorer gives me everything I need.
It almost feels like Excel isn't being given time to load completely before the file is opened.

Does anyone else have any experience of this? Or a solution?

NB: O/S = Office XP, SP3

Many thanks

A:Solved: Excel 2003 - Opening file via Explorer

Following on from my previous post. Further digging around has led me to try a few things - most of which haven't worked, of course!

On one forum somewhere, for a slightly different problem, someone suggested going to Tools -> Options -> General, then selecting Ignore Other Applications.

This had the effect of not allowing any files to open via Windows Explorer.
However, after setting this back (as that was clearly not what I wanted!) I've found that files are opening as expected and correctly!

So, I don't know how/why it's worked, but the problem appears to be solved.

Hi

I am running vista 64 Home Premium, IE explorer 7. I have one user admin account on the PC. Recently, I began to get a message each time I try to open ie explorer OPEN FILE - Security Warning and a prompt to Continue or Cancel. If I hit Continue, ie explorer opens p fine. It was too annoying and I finally decided to restore my system with a backup file from early Jan where I knew I did not have this nonsense message. The system restore worked w/o the annoying message for few minutes but it returned again. It seems to have been a Windows update that is triggering this. Any way to get rid of this annoyance?

Hi: I could not open a file (Adobe Acrobat File) in Internet Explorer. Received a message saying that it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged. I spent several hours trying to get this file I needed for my work. Finally the next day I thought I would try Firefox and it worked fine in there. It stated that it was a Adobe Acrobat Document and Firefox should open it with - Adobe Reader by Default.
How can I get this to work in Internet Explorer? I usually use Internet Explorer. Could it be that I need to set Internet Explorer? Or do I need to delete/remove Internet Explorer and down load and install it again?

Thanks,

My computer runs Windows 10. Recently it has been stuck on the blue logo loading screen for a couple of minutes when previously on my SSD it would take seconds. When I open File Explorer, anything I click on freezes, either the blue cursor spinning, or the indefinite green loading bar on the address 'working on it'. This means anything file related does not respond. If I try to download something off the internet and click 'save as', it just disappears and nothing happens. Right now opening my default browser Firefox is OK, but other apps take 5 or so minutes to open, which inevitably lead to it not responding. I have been looking at forums but no problems seem to be affecting all these things I have talked about. I ran a sfc /scannow, but it 'found corrupt files and was unable to fix some of them;'. I pretty much can't do anything except use my browser. Control Panel, Settings, all unresponsive. I can get into regedit. Otherwise, no programs are functioning. Please Help, I am happy to provide information that you think I may be able to provide in my current circumstance.

I have a lot of things on my Harddrive which I need, is this the issue?

I was able to do this in Win7 but can't figure out what to do in W10.
Problem is that I want File Explorer to start with the display at a particular folder. In my case that is D:\Tony\Pictures. And with the contents of that folder in the right-hand pane.
I should add that C: is the label for the SSD on this PC and data is stored in D:
At the moment, in the folders pane it shows five items: Quick Access, OneDrive, This PC, Network and Homegroup. If any of these are expanded then it will remain expanded but only down one level when re-opened. The default selected item of the five is always Quick Access and that is of little use to me.
Thanks in advance!

Hi, this article, which you may have read, discusses this issue; although it may not achieve precisely what you want, it comes close.
From another point of view, you'll probably also be aware of programs that offer favourites list, common across a range of file managers and open/save boxes etc such as Listary.

My pc was working with no errors yesterday, last night as I powered the windows 7 system down, it told me that there was a update to do.  The pc did the update for Internet Explorer 8 for windows & (KB976749) and shut down.  Today all other Standard users can not launch Explorer, they get the Windows can not access the specified device, Path, of file.  Admin accounts work with no issues and the security looks the same? Any ideas??

A:Explorer.exe Windows can not access the specified device, Path, of file windows 7

Does the error occur when launching Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer?

Please perform a System Restore and check whether the issue persists when accessing Explorer. If the error persists, please let me know. Otherwise, I suggest you manually reinstall the update in admin account.

For your reference, I have enclosed the download link below:

Hi

I may have done something to cause this but here is what is happening.

I download a file to any folder and when I move or delete it the file is still showing in the original folder?

After awhile I go back and it is gone? This never happened before I installed a SSD drive as my main hard drive.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Thank You

This is the strangest problem I have imported folder.reg and directory.reg but I still can not start explorer.exe.  If I type explorer.exe /e it will launch ok.. If I launch it from a shortcut it launches fine.  But I can not get it to launch by clicking on explorer.exe.   All other executables work fine but for one other which I try to run which is Windows7UpgradeAdvisorSetup.exe it gives me error "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation."

I have checked local security policies and there is none in effect.  I have ran software to check for policies but I can not find any policies to cause the above two problems.

Ran Drweb nothing found
Adwcleaner nothing found
Malwarebytes nothing found

So I thought ok let's try an upgrade install to repair my Windows 7 OS but I get message that Windows Vista SP1 has to be installed at mininum so I am not able to do a repair install either.  Except for the two problems everything is working fine and giving me absolutely no issues at all.

A:Windows 7: Windows 7 explorer.exe file does not have a program associated error

Maybe some kind of virus corrupted your windows file association in registry. Download this reg file http://www.mediafire.com/download/x6b6zxici9rs5x2/folder_fix_w7.zip and unzip it and than run the reg file that was inside. But i strongly suggest that you backup you registry first just in case.

Thought I would share this. After the last upgrade of Windows 10, the File Explorer stopped working. I found a way around it. Go into Control Panel, then Administrative tools, then you will be able to find your files. Found this AFTER I had spoken to Microsoft techs who had no idea what was wrong.

New to windows 10, I have 2 accounts both in family.
When I log into my account and open File explorer, I can see all the programs copied across from my previous PC, e.g. music, pictures etc., however, when my wife logs into her account, and opens file explorer the folders are all empty.
How do we share common files on a single PC using file explorer and not a network or OneDrive?

A:Windows 10 accounts & File Explorer

Hi Bingo, welcome to the Ten Forums.

Use the Public folders for that, it is the easiest way to allow all users of a single PC to access the same files. If you open the C:\Users folder you will see that there are so called profile folders for you, your wife and the third profile named Public. Move the music you want to share with your wife from C:\Users\YourUserprofile\Music to C:\Users\Public\Public Music, the images from C:\Users\YourUserprofile\Pictures to C:\Users\Public\Public Pictures, and so on.

In Windows all users have an automatic access to all content in Public folders.

Microsoft today rolled out a massive update for Windows 10 preview builds and in addition to a plethora of new features, the company also introduced a completely new icon for File Explorer.

The default file manager on Windows 10 PCs, File Explorer has been around for many years (it was previously known as Windows Explorer), but its looks and features have barely changed in the latest Windows versions.

Users, however, are still hoping for a bigger overhaul of the app and one of the main requests is support for tabs that would make it easier to work with multiple folders in a single window.

New almost-monochrome icon
In the meantime, Microsoft is working on making File Explorer better match the looks of Windows 10, so the company introduced a new icon that follows the monochrome design language used for the other icons in the operating system.

?You will notice a little bit of color still present in the icon. The design team was a bit hesitant to completely let go of the yellow because it has become such a familiar part of the File Explorer branding,? Gabe Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, explained.

?They explored a variety of different ways to keep the yellow and still match the cleanliness of the black and white Windows app icons. The new icon you see in this build is where the design team landed that is closer to monochrome, but still has the familiar shape that users recognize, and has a nod to the yellow that you see all throughout File Explorer. Hi!. My first post....

I just put together a new PC with decent motherboard, AMD quad CPU, 8 GB RAM, solid-state C:\ main drive, new 2 TB disk slave drive F:\, plus an older external drive G:\. I loaded Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64 bit.

I have many video files (mp4, flv, mpg, mpeg & wmv). These were compiled on another computer running XP Home SP3. The problem is that I can no longer access file details, which is a huge problem. So, when I right-click a file name, hit Properties, Details, Comments, my old text notes are either missing or there is no comments field, depending on file type. I see all users have full rights, and I unchecked Read-only and Hidden File and applied to all. No change. I tried copying files to the other drives ... no change.

The mp4 files don't show my old notes in the empty Comments line. The flv files show no comments line at all. The mpg and mpeg have a blank Comments line that cannot be filled in; same for Nero VOB files. The wmv files, however, are the only ones that show the old notes in the comments line.

As for pics, the jpg files seem to have their comments intact (whew!).

If I put the external drive back on the XP machine, the comments are there. I later installed Nero 9 from their website ... no change.

Do you have any sage advice? Is there some utility software that could help me access the missing comments? I don't want to install XP as a dual boot just to see old comments. Thanks very much!!

A:Can't see my old explorer file comments from XP in Windows 7

Hi,

I believe that Windows XP used some feature of NTFS called Alternate Data Streams to store text comments. This is no longer supported from Vista onwards.

The below may help you, but I have not used it myself:

Good software to handle NTFS alternate data stream in windows explorer? - Super User

Hello,

I was trying to open a particular file in Windows Explorer. I was trying to open the file that had no association with it. One of the the programs I used was Winzip. The file I was trying to open was something like kp.002 It did not open. The problem I have now is that other files I have with # .002 open with Winzip now. My question how do I get those .002 files back to "No Association" instead of the winzip association. I need the no association sow I can re-join them since the are split files.
Thanks,

well, have lurked here off and on for a long time...now it's my turn to request help.

Machine Info:
XP Pro SP2
Dell Inspiron E1705
1GB RAM, 150 GB HDD

Windows (file) Explorer has started crashing. It occurs after opening and browsing to any folder. AV scans are done daily and machine is clean. Unsure if related but, recent Windows Update installed 2 .net updates.

Error message = "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close..."
The data in that error report is: AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.3156 ModName: unknown ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: ffff0449

Did the 'Debug" offered on that error box several times but didnt fix.

Explorer then closes. Then, Task Bar, etc. restarts fine. I'm aware that explorer.exe is more than just a file explorer, so, since it's other functions (task bar, icons, control panel, etc.) seem to work ok and the error only occurs on file browsing....Uhhh? explorer.exe corrupted?

Windows Explorer had been working fine but now it won't (1) resize to full screen, (2) paste any file anywhere or allow me to drag and drop files. This latter one also won't work on my desktop. What gives? Can I uninstall Windows Explorer and reinstall? Will the 'recovery disks' that came with the computer allow this to happen?

Also, I have a file I want to inspect, a CBS.log file, and it says I need the administrator permission to do this. How do I obtain this. I'm no dummy when it comes to computers but I cannot figure this one out on Vista.

Windows XP 5.1 - How, please, can I designate that "List" will be the default for how files are viewed in Windows Explorer rather than "icon"?  Do get weary of repeatedly having to reclick, reclick, reclick .. but then, I guess, I should be so very grateful that Mr. Bill & Co know what's best for me, huh?

Many thanks.

A:Windows Explorer: File Default

First you need to go to any folder, and inside that folder, right click, and set the view you want all your folders to be(list).

Then in that same folder, on the toolbar:
click Tools
<Folder Options>
<View>
<Folder Views>
Select <Apply> to all folder views.
Click <OK>
Now all the folders will be set to the current folder options.

I'm sure that I read somewhere that there's a simple fix that you can use to make W7 Explorer display ("explore") in the left hand panel the structure of (sub) files as the user would have come to expect (wrongly) as the default.  I was playing around in "View" without cracking it. It might have been a download if not built in. Tks for pointing me in the right direction.

Hiya!

I have about 5 hard drives in my system. I open File Explorer in Windows 8 and click on "Computer". All the drives show up.

I click in the box that says "Search Computer". I enter in any search term. Let's say "*.iso" to find all iso files on all my drives.

I hit enter. NOTHING happens.

In Windows 7 this used to execute a search across all my drives.

If I double click on each drive individually and put "*.iso" in the search box then it works fine.

How do I search across all my drives from the File Explorer Computer location????

Thanks!

A:Windows 8 File Explorer Search

You must first index, where you wish to search - Control Panel - Indexing options. When you have selected all the drives you wish to include, go into the "Advanced" tab and rebuild the index. Go and have a cup of coffee whilst this is taking plce. With your drives, it could take a while!

I have a file folder directly below "C:" that has a folder name of "19193908697b46e209b3" - That's the name on the file folder? The folder looks like its got a lot of Microsoft update stuff in it - a bunch of .dll's, exe's and others. A total of 127 files. Its taking up 41.7MB and I could use the space. I'm running XP SP3 and using IE7 - so I'm up to date. Can I delete this folder and these files and get the space back? Are they something that was just placed there as part of a OS update? Thanks.

Hi there

are there any File explorer alternatives that can group and display files / directories easily in user selectable fields - for example here I've grouped them in alphabetical order with clear demarcations between each group. (Linux -- KDE file manager Dolphin).

The standard Windows File explorer is a bit rubbish these days - especially once you start getting large directories with loads of files in them - for example Music / Audio books / other multi media etc. I'd like something like the screenshot shown above.

I recently decided to update to Windows 8.1 and since then I've been having trouble with file explorer. It crashes and won't open if I click on the icon in the tool bar. I found a work around that if I right-click on it and choose something from my frequently list then it is fine but if I right click on the icon and choose file explorer it still just crashes. Once I'm in a folder, I can't right click on any file, otherwise it just crashes.

I've had Windows 7 installed on my workstation a week ago and by now I think I have a fair amount of suggestions to make it better.
If you're not in the mood to read too much just scroll to the bottom.

I'm absolutely disappointed with the File Explorer, as it is now it's a tremendous annoyance to navigate, specially with the keyboard.
To begin with, when opening an Explorer window the focus goes to the right panel instead of the tree panel on the left; in XP I would Windows+E to open a window and in an instant I'd be navigating the file tree to get to the location I wanted. Now I have to make a Shift+Tab to go into the left panel.
Once in the tree (I removed Favorites, Libraries, etc... clutter), going down with the arrow keys I found that, when a folder is selected, it doesn't open on the right panel to display the contents. I have to hit Enter to do so. Now that and the Shift+Tab thing may seem like small things, but it really chaffs me to have to perform more actions to get the same result as before, not something I'd define as progress in terms of user interface.
In fact this thing was so annoying (not opening the folder contents when selected with the arrow keys) that I went looking for a way to restore it, there's a program called Classic Shell that brings that back (among other things) but it has risen some other problems.
One is that now going up and down a folder hierarchy there's some sort of lag or bouncing of the selection, it can lead to opening a different fold... Read more

I upgraded from windows 7 home to windows 10 . Everything worked for three months. Now my File manager does not work. If I double click on a shortcut nothing happens. No messages or errors, no feedback at all. If I select File explorer from the windows 10 menu it lists recent locations, but if I click on anything once again the window closes and no feedback of any kind. To access my files I have to go though the application file search. I can  no longer add folders or improve my organization of files. Obviously it used to work so I suppose it became corrupted. What is being done to fix this, I see this is a common problem looking at the forums for microsoft, but no one has said a suggested fix worked.

In past Windows versions, including 8, one could follow this MS advice...

"To change the way Windows Explorer opens (copy and paste)
one of the examples below to the target portion of a shortcut
and name it Windows Explorer.

Examples:
Open Windows Explorer with My Computer as the root with
all drives visible and "My Computer" selected.
C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /e,/n,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}"

(other examples followed)

In Windows 8.1 the "target" box is grayed out. File Explorer always starts with the THIS PC folder highlighted...
and I would like to change that. How?

A:File (Windows) Explorer start up in 8.1

Hello Borgus,

If you like, you could also create a new shortcut with the target location you like, pin that to the taskbar instead, then unpin the default File Explorer icon from the taskbar.

However, in Windows 8.1 Preview, the default pinned File Explorer icon on the taskbar opens to "This PC" (new name for "Computer") now.
