I have an old computer with following configuration.

Intel Celeron Processor 501 Mhz with 192 MB of RAM

I recently loaded Windows XP 2002 Home Edition with SP3 onto this system. The computer after that is very slow and hangs.

The system is basically used only for internet surfing and checking webmails.

Do I have to upgrade the system to P IV or will upgrading the RAM to 1 GB solve the problem ?

A:Will Windows XP run with Intel Celeron processor

It's better to upgrade in P IV because you will face this kind of problem time to time when browsing the internet. make sure to have a ram of 512 MB or more and when using internet do install a good antivirus software to make your pc fast and virus free.

The Lenovo S20 - 30 laptop has an Intel Celeron N2840 cpu. (a 64bit cpu) And 2GB RAM. And probably UEFI bios.
And Windows 8.1 with Bing 64bit preinstalled.

I'd like to install Windows 7 32bit. (Home Premium). A clean install.
Is this possible? In the hardware level, is this possible?

A:Windows 7 32bit on Intel Celeron N2840

1. Check in disk management whether the C partition is encrypted. This may be an instant Go device.

2. You probably have only a 32GB disk. I think W8.1 is a lot better on that. It is small and fast.

3. Check your BIOS whether you can shut off Secure Boot and set it to Legacy Made.

I think you will have more trouble than it is worth changing the OS. I have a couple of similar devices like that (Asus T100 and Asus X205). They run perfectly with W8.1.

Just recieved this on my newsfeedWindows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year - BBC newsIn my opinion this is fantastic news, as most of my devices are running windows 7/8.1 which should be eligable for a free upgrade.I have been toying around with windows 10 in a virtual machine and have found it's performance very good for a technical preview, have to wait and see what the finished product will be like.message edited by thomasad

A:Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year

Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately the BBC news left out the fine print shown on Windows 10 page on Microsoft's site here. Quoted: ?It is our intent that most of these devices will qualify, but some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device. Devices must be connected to the internet and have Windows Update enabled. ISP fees may apply. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required. Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise outside of this offer. We will be sharing more information and additional offer terms in coming months.?Also quoted is the need to sign up for email for the upgrade offer using your Microsoft account.i_Xp/Vista/W7Usermessage edited by XpUser

Being pretty happy with finally making the jump to Windows 7 64 bit on my newer machine a few months ago, I'd now like to also upgrade my 10 year old dual Xeon workhorse from XP SP3 to Windows 7 32 bit.

It's a Super Micro P4DCE+II - Super Micro Computer, Inc. - Products | Motherboards | Xeon Boards | P4DCE+II

I'm wondering about the Intel 860 chipset drivers and Windows 7 compatibility, The drivers linked on Super Micro's site only list XP as the most recent OS supported and the same on Intel's site.

I've seen this page - intel drivers pour chipsets - is this what I want?

Would this be as easy as installing Windows 7 then installing a chipset package from station-drivers? If so, which version would be best?

A:10 year old Super Micro P4DCE+II Intel 860 Chipset and Windows 7

You might be able to get something working. It's possible there are vista drivers available that will give you some joy in win 7. The honest truth is that scenario is prone to crashes largely because of the vast difference between how vista and win 7 handle power management.

Honestly I would suggest keeping xp on that machine, as even vista drivers seem to be in short supply for your specific chipset (just basing that on a quick search though)

I recently had a major pain with the Google redirect virus, which was operating on a non admin user profile. Through some research on here and other sites I managed to get rid of it, using MalwareBytes. It found 5 viruses in all, and once they were gone so was the redirection issue. I did attempt using Combofix, but this didnt seem to do much at all.

However, I have found as of late that my computer's upload speed is pathetic, to the point of zero upload speed. I am unable to send files to sites like wordpress and photobucket 9 time out of 10. I originally thought it might be a connection issue, but restarting routers and contacting my ISP to find no known issues has not alleviated the issue. Because of the recent virus activity, I am concerned that the two could be related.

I have tried changing Firewall settings, installed "speedupmypc2011" (which has made a great general difference), but although in IE I can now upload, speed test puts it at a god awful 0.11 upload speed. It never used to take this long.

Please can you advise me on how to make sure the machine is ok?

I want to replace it with this: ARK | Intel? Core
I've tried simply physically replacing one with the other, but as you may guess, it's not that simple. What do I need to do? I'm on a budget of zero.

Could I get by with installation instructions, and perhaps directions towards drivers? I'm open to suggestions.

A:Intel(R) Celeron(R) or Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4

If your motherboard properly supports the Pentium 4 & if you can OC it to speeds close to 3.0GHz, it should be much better than the Celeron. It all depends on the Pentium 4 though, mostly which core it is based on (Northwood, Prescott, etc.).

Do you have any extra info on it ?

I am recently starting to experience a serious problem with IE8 (as well as a few applications like MS Word, where it takes a long time to bring up a new document) I am running XP on a 7 year old Dell Dimension 4600i (purchased new in 2004). The problem I am noticing the most is after starting IE8. A web page will take a very long time loading and all the while will scrolling down to the bottom while I attempt to pull the scroll bar up to the top of the page. I am also experiencing Media PLayer having difficulty too. Some videos will sometime stop and then start running again and that process repeats until the end of the video. I re-set IE8 two days ago and nothing improved the situation. I installed Advanced System Optimizer v.3 a week ago to tweek the PC. Nothing significantly improved the problem with slow speed and hanging up. I uninstalled the Kodak software and still no improvement. My best guess is the system has been probably infexted with malware and/or viruses. I had XP re-installed a year ago by a professional computer technicain after the blue scree of death occured. Everything was working fine until about three weeks ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated if someon can help me because I'm ready to be fit for a staight jacket. This type of problem has never happened to me before.

I have just returned home to my desktop (Used my laptop at school) and it is still having blue screen problems.

I have had this computer for over a year, and ever since I built it, it randomly blue screened.

I have changed the memory and ran memtest(Like a year ago but i did it), I also purchased a new hard drive so i know its not the ram or the hard drive thats causing my problem.

I was never able to find out what was wrong with my computer because of the fact that it never gave me minidump files. Recently for some reason, it started to give me actual minidump files.

I have uploaded my minidump files, so if anyone can take a look that would be great.

In terms of what im doing when it happens, its completely random. Sometimes it happens 5 minutes after turning on the computer, other times it takes weeks.

Is this the best solution for a processor upgrade? or stick with a 2.0/512/400 P4 Northwood (for around $30)?? Or is there another processor that will give me a boost for not much bucks?

My computer is running very very slow. I do not want to upgrade anything on it at the moment, because I'm still saving up for my dream computer. I just want a quick fix to make my computer run faster. I have a GeForce FX 5200 PCI video card (which sucks more than just space inside of my computer). I needed a cheap video card for games. Is there anyway that I can overclock my intel celeron processor? It's got a 666MHz processor speed. I have 191MB of RAM installed (I should get more soon). I am running windows ME, and have a 14GB HD. I have tried many "speed up programs", but I have finally decided that the only way to make your computer faster is to overclock it. Thanks for looking.

A:Overclocking Intel Celeron

Depedning on the computer, you may OC it by 0~30Mhz. IE: if its a NAME BRAND system, no.

Reality is, you're not going to squeeze much more power out of your CPU. I used to OC my AMD 2500, in which I easily got an extra 200Mhz out of the chip. BUT - it effected my system's timing and while it improved in some areas - it lowered the performance in others (like the HD) - So, I have brought it back down to its default speed.

Just save for your next upgrade... And you can buy these parts piece by piece.

1 - case, $50~100 (inwin 523J or Enermax 1101 series - ver sweet)

2 - AMD64-3000 (64bit CPU) - $200 (in a month or so)
3 - ASUS brand motherboard, Nforce3 motherboard. ($150)
4 - 512mb (2 x 256) min. of DDR-400Mhz RAM
5 - MAXTOR 120GB 2mb HD ($100~120). SILENT & fast (I get about 50mb per sec access)
6 - Nvidia FX5900 = $200 or ATI9800Pro ($300).

About $800~900.

Stick on WindowsXP Pro is looking at network LAN party gaming.

A:Intel Celeron D336

First off, it looks like that particular CPU (the celeronD336) may not be compatible with that particular motherboard, so if you haven't purchased already, hold off until we can confirm. (source: )

On to some of your questions:

I found an Intel Celeron D336 2.8 Ghz new for 71.00. This is a pretty fast processors but i was wondering why it is so cheap.Click to expand...

Celeron processors are great for basic internet browsing and document writting. But if you are into any heavier applications that require CPU horsepower, the celeron are a very dissapointing choice. You mention you are building this system specifically for gaming. Do not get a celeron CPU. You will be extremely dissapointed.

A:problems with Intel Celeron 1.4 Ghz

Is it the same OS on both machines ? & which one BTW ?

The 1.4GHZ Celeron has a 100mhz FSB so I hope you're using at least PC100 memory with it. My brother ordered a Compaq similar to your PC1 machine ( it's a shame to buy a Compaq I know ) & it came with slow PC100 CAS3.:dead:

I mean surely they could have gotten better memory for it, especially for the price he paid.

Have you installed the Intel Application Accelerator ( IAA ) ?

Celerons don't overheat much but you might still want to check to see if your case has enough ventilation.

Which one would perform better for light 3D modeling , and After Effects Editing?

I hear Athlon is better but at 2.2 Ghz.

So should I get Laptop A:
AMD Athlon™
Processor Speed
Cache Memory
512KB on die Level 2
System Memory (RAM)
System Memory (RAM) Expandable To
Type of Memory (RAM)
ATI Radeon HD 3200
Or laptop B:
Intel® Celeron®
Processor Speed
System Bus
Cache Memory
1MB on die Level 2
System Memory (RAM)
System Memory (RAM) Expandable To
Type of Memory (RAM)
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M
These two are the best i can do at the moment, money is tight and I need something soon. Hard drives on both machines are okay.

A:AMD Athlon 1.6 GHz or Intel Celeron 2.2 Ghz?

Hi gabby64,

Welcome to TSG!

Get laptop B, i.e. for 3D modeling you will likely need a large cache which it has vs laptop A, and the memory is expandable which is the cheapest way to improve performance.

Okay. So I've discovered that my CPU is actually an Intel Celeron MMX compatible processor running at 366MHz.

Now this processor the equivalent (albeit cheaper) of a Pentium II processor? If so, am I okay to purchase software (ie games) which are written for Pentium II processors running at the same speed?

Thanks to all for their assistance and patience!!

Is your computer build by a company like HP, Dell etc. Or is it custom? If it is made by a company can you tell us the brand and model number "HP Pavilion 6000" for example. If its custom maybe you have a receipt with the motherboard model written on it. You could also pop open the side panel and look for your motherboards name on the motherboard.

If not maybe google some ways to find out your motherboard model for us ;D

If I put this processor in a 800/530 MHz FSB mboard, will there be a data slowdown or loss (the processor has a 400 MHz FSB.) Or will this be like memory and revert to the slower and just operate as 400 MHz?

A:Solved: Intel Celeron 2.7 GHz processor

No, processors are not like memory. You have to look at the board specifications to see what procesors are supported by a particular board. What processors are supported by a particular board are dependent on three board components, i.e. the chipset, the BIOS and of course the processor.

The 2 machines I primarily use are pretty old socket 478 machines. One machine has an Intel D875PBZ board with an 875P chipset which will only support specific Pentium 4 Extreme Edition and Pentium 4 processors with a 800MHZ or 533MHz FSB. The other has an Intel D865PERL board with an 865PE chipset that will only support specific Extreme Edition Pentium 4 processors, Pentium 4 Processors, Celeron D processors and Celeron Processors with an 800 MHZ, 533 MHz. and 400 MHz. FSB.

You need to check the manufacturers specifications for your specific board to see what processors are, OR are not supported by that board. Intel states for each board the following statement; "Use of unsupported processors may result in improper operation, damage to the desktop board or processor, or reduced product life."

You can install the Celeron 2.7GHz. processor and it may run, however if it does run you still have the risk of damage to the processor and/or board unless that processor is specifically supported.

A:Intel Celeron E1200 overclocking?

It is certainly not normal, though I've personally seen this on many Celeron models (like the 900 and the E3300), and it usually turns out OK anyway.

I've had a minor incident when it mis-showed the frequency calculation, but in that case it was related to the motherboard not supporting OC that well...

Just as an FYI, overclocking even though the frequency-calculation is incorrect usually don't result in any damage. But would be very careful if I were you.

How do I overclock my comp and what speed can I get it to go to?

A:How do I overclock my 633mhz intel celeron?

Processor speed is determined by the multiplier(in your case 9.5) times the front side bus speed, again in your case 66.66mhz or 633 total.
To overclock you must raise the front side bus speed in small increments and see if the machine will handle it.

Total Entries in Database for Celeron II 633 - 153
Average overclocked speed - 976 Mhz

They are both so comparable in performance, there would be little difference in using either of them.

I have a similar situation with a Celeron D 3.2 (LGA775) system and a P4 2.8 CPU that I could use. After looking up the benchmarks, I found that it was a flip flop as to which one out performed the other. It boiled down to only gaining performance when processing certain things. Therefor it was not even worth considering the CPU switch.

A:Intel Celeron Dual Core CPU 88 Degrees

In this case, the thermal pads should be removed and thoroughly cleaned off. A good quality thermal compound like Arctic Silver should be applied sparingly. If you had to move the CPU heat-sink around even a little while attaching it to the motherboard, the thermal pad could have been rubbed off and it is not sufficient to cool the CPU now

It runs great but doesn't boot? You shouldn't have to "fix" a computer you've had for 2 hours unless you downloaded something or physically damaged it. I've yet to see computers recalled (batteries, yes), so, no, that's not the problem. Take it back and get a replacement.

Just curious, what are the major difference between the Celeron and Pentium 4 CPUs (comparison is between the Celeron/ Pentium 4 1.8 GH to 2.6) . I run a small business and I sell computers to people locally where I live and I get asked this question every once in a while. Most of my users are moderate gamers and business users, but very litte hard core gamers. I hear alot of contraversy over the Intel Celeron CPU compared to the Pentim 4 CPU. I have some guys who swear up and down that the Intel Celeron CPU is not even worth the time. But I personally believe that there is very little diference between both of the CPU compared to the price you will pay for the Pentium 4, considering most of my customers aren't hard core gamers. Then I would recommend a Pentium 4 or a AMD Athlon XP CPU. Am I right? I'm just curious what a knowlegable person has to say about each CPU.

A:Overclock Intel Celeron D in Dell desktop

Since you say your PC is a Dell, I don't think you will have any options to over-clock.

Celeron's are locked processors, so you don't have the option to increase the multiplier.
Dell as well as other manufacturers usually lock the BIOS, so you wouldn't be able to increase the base frequency either.

I hope someone more experienced can help me with this-
I have ordered an Intel Celeron D 320 (2.4GHz) to build a economical, 'average' spare system. The new "D" is based on the latest Prescott architecture but does not include hyperthreading, and its L2 cache is smaller. They apparently overclock impressively well, however, and should be great for 'average users' (non-gamers). And the price is 'right' at around 70 dollars presently. I've seen a number of very positive reviews of the new "D". It is apparently *way* better than all previous Celerons including the earlier P4 type Celerons.

Here's my concern- the MB I have on hand and planned to use with it looks like it *may* not be compatible with the CPU. It's an Acorp 4S648FXL. The BIOS chip on the board is marked "4S648FXL | 1.0 4800 | 2003/08/27". The box it came in is marked "4S648FXL-11-A01" above the UPC. It's an 'A01' revision level, apparently.

On the Acorp website, the support page offers the latest BIOS version 1.2 / 2004-9-22 and says it will "Support Prescott with FSB 533 Mhz CPU (PCB 1.0 with A03 sticker)". I have that sinking feeling that the 'A03' sticker means a physically different version of the MB than my 'A01' version. OR- is it just an earlier BIOS version?? So the question is basically this- can I safely assemble the rev. A01 MB with my Celeron D 320 CPU and then do a BIOS fl... Read more

A:Intel Celeron D Mother Board Compatibility?

There is a good chance your CeleronD is not compatible with that board. I ran into this problem when we switched over to the CeleronD at work, we had to make sure we were getting the newer revision of the board (Albatron PM266 Pro), as the older one looked identical, but was not compatible (and no BIOS update would fix that).

It's true that they overclock well, I got my 2.66GHz one up to 3.4GHz without even needing to increase the CPU voltage.

Pin compatible? The sockets look identical, if that's what you mean. But boards may require hardware changes (e.g. improved power delivery) to support a Prescott. You aren't likely to damage a board by plugging one in, it just won't boot.

No, the motherboard supplies the voltage to it. The CPU tells the motherboard the voltage it wants, but some boards (including mine) allow you to increase the voltage.

A:Solved: Intel Celeron(R) M Processor running at 1.40ghz

The maximum RAM a system can use is determined by several factors, but the CPU is rarely the limiting factor and not how to determine the maximum amount of RAM for a system. Since this is a laptop you need to see how much the laptop supports based on motherboard(so chipset and number of slots), and by the operating system, 32 bit(4GB but only about 3GB usable) or 64 bit and the version, and also by the version ie. Windows 7 Starter has a 2GB limit, Home Basic has a 8GB limit for 64-bit or 4GB for 32-bit), or Home, or Professional. The processor does have a maximum amount of memory it can address but its well beyond what the other limitations are. Post or look up the exact model number of the laptop or use a memory configurator like the one at the site to see how much RAM the hardware will take and then check the

I was surprised to see here that the Intel Celeron D 330 2.66 GHz processor benchmark scores are lower than the AMD Sempron 3100+ 1.80 GHz processor benchmark scores.

I recently resurrected and upgraded 2 older desktops.

Both have 2 GB DDR PC2700 RAM and have an UDMA/ATA100 7200 rpm hard drive and have the same antivirus program running.

The Intel processor has a 533 MHz FSB and the AMD processor has an 800 MHz FSB.

The desktop with the AMD processor appears to be the faster and more snappier of the two.

Is the higher FSB of the AMD processor the deciding factor, or is it something else?

Does that mean turning it off just makes it always 2Ghz and never any faster? and with it on it changes between 2Ghz and 2.41Ghz

I am also upgrading the RAM. I have used the scanner on to find which RAM is compatable. Will upgrading the processor to a Pentium 4 make any difference to the compatability of the RAM? Thanks.

A:Solved: Upgrading Intel Celeron to Pentium 4? Compatability questions

As far as the processor goes, you might check for a bios update
in the download section of the asrock site to insure compatability.
Be very careful when doing bios updates.
Pentium 4 processors do perform better than celerons and you
should be able to install a faster processor.

Memory compatability is more a motherboard concern.
Crucial usually provides good matches.

Hi, you might pressing the Esc key while powering up to enter the BIOS setup menu to see if the trackpad functions correctly in there. If not, it may be defective. There might be a component test in the BIOS F2 diagnostic menu also. If it works okay in the BIOS but not in Windows, you could try reinstalling both the Intel chipset driver pack and the touchpad driver. Just download the files from HP and run them instead of trying to update the current driver that is there.

My sister is not all techy, she had vista on her laptop, windows vista 64bit and it was running horribly even with 3gigs of ram, and so I downloaded the 32bit version of windows 7 ultimate on my computer and installed it on my laptop, and so she said that she wanted windows 7 on her laptop too, so I installed it on hers, soo this morning she woke up, and I told her that her laptop was running windows 7 32bit and she thinks that I just ruined her laptop by putting a 32bit operating system on her system, and she is so wrong!, she thinks that there is a lot of difference from 32 bit to 64 bit, her computer only has 3 gigs of ram and its faster than vista 64 bit, I am frustrated because after all the hardwork of putting windows 7, she now wants me to put vista 64bit back, she says "my processors is 64bit! put vista back!", but my laptop, my desktop and her laptop are 64bit capable but are running 32 bit, can anyone explain to her that there isnt a major difference between 32bit and 64bit! plz! she wants to go back to the buggy vista and thats a huge mistake!, , she thinks that her laptop is worthless just becuase it is running on 32bit... help!!!!!

A:I put windows 7 on my sister laptop, she hates it.

even though you are right I think she has made up her mind and it is her computer. why not just put 64bit win 7 on?

HI everyone,

I have gotten hold of my sister's windows vista machine that she had from brand new about 3 years ago but now is SO slow on start up, runs really slow, constantly not responds etc for ages then kicks in!

I have said I would look into helping her out to fix it but really nto sure where the best place to start is.

I am defragging it as I speak which has taken 4 hours so far and no idea when that will be complete.

I wonder if anyone could give me an idea on where to start really to get it back to its glory days.......or just working at a reasonable speed would be great

Thanks to anyone who may help

A:Windows Vista, SO SO slow since sister had it!

First thing to check is what "Protection" programs are running?
If there is more than 1 AV program installed remove all but one.

If there are any of the "Registry Cleaners" or "Speed up my PC type's" back up all data and get ready to do a system rebuild back to factory settings.

What is the make and model of this machine?

It has been very frustrating to rebuilding a Windows 7 desktops last year or so. After the installation of Windows7 Home or Pro SP1 disks click on Check Updates and it could run for 2 days before it lists the 240 updates to install. Anyway
to speed this up? I know Microsoft wants us to use Windows 10 but some businesses and older home hardware have to have Windows 7. I wish and hope this torcher will stop soon and Microsoft comes up with a fix. Any help is appreciated!!!

Hi all,I came across this and thought it may be usefull to a few people here on the forums, although if you use 16 bit applications you may want to keep this disabled:This security hole is said to affect 32bit Windows operating systemsA CRITICAL FLAW has been found in the Windows NT trap handler that makes all Windows machines wide open to hackers. The problem has been a feature of every Windows system for the last 17 years and no one has noticed. According to Full Disclosure, the security hole in Windows allows users with restricted access to escalate their privileges to system level. It can be done on all 32-bit versions of Windows from Windows NT 3.1 to Windows 7. This is not likely to bother consumers much, but corporate IT managers will be wetting themselves. And the removal instructions. Enabling the "Prevent access to 16-bit applications"1. Start2. Run (Windows key + R)3. Type gpedit.msc and press enter (Run as Administrator if need be) 4. Expand - Computer Configuration5. Expand - Administrative Templates6. Expand - Windows Components 7. Open - Application Compatibility section.8. Double Click 'Prevent access to 16 bit applications'9. Check Enabled10 Click Apply then OkHere is a screenshot to help those having any troubles:

A:17 year old Windows flaw discovered in Windows 7. How to close this security vulnerability

According to the same site microsoft had promised to patch the hole in security I am afraid I am one of those people who just has automatic updates on and hardly checks to see what I am actually downloading. I guess if some person who shouldnt have admin access especially in a company or business was to get it this way microsoft would have to do a lot of explaining. Its amazing that only after 17 years this hole has been found.

Hey guys. I joined today because I'm deciding between two laptops and I thought I could use your help.

The laptop will be used for everyday use for the most part but I also play World of Warcraft. The game recommends at least 1g of RAM but most users suggest more. The Acer has more RAM but only a single processor. Any suggestions?

Toshiba - Satellite Laptop with Intel® Celeron® Processor:

Processor: Intel Celeron

Processor Speed: 2.2GHz

System Bus: 800MHz

Cache Memory: 1MB on die Level 2

System Memory (RAM): 2GB

Type of Memory (RAM): DDR2

Hard Drive Type: SATA (5400 rpm)

Computer Hard Drive Size: 250GB

Acer - Aspire Laptop with AMD Athlon? Single-Core Processor

Processor: AMD Athlon?

Processor Speed: 1.6GHz

System Bus: 667MHz

Cache Memory: 512KB on die Level 2

System Memory (RAM): 3GB

Type of Memory (RAM): DDR2

Hard Drive Type: SATA (5400 rpm)

Computer Hard Drive Size: 160GB

A:Toshiba Laptop with Intel Celeron or Acer with AMD Athlon Single-Core Processor?

both of those computers are pretty slow... and single core. the Toshiba is the better buy but the link is dead so you might be out of luck with that anyways. i don't play wow so i can't tell you what i would recommend for hardware. i will just go ahead and make the suggestion to buy something with a Core2Duo, 2GB RAM and a more high-end onboard video adapter for games. the more dedicated video power the better.

I keep reading it's mediocre in performance compared to many others and i can't afford the 700 series, right now i just have a 5400 rpm hard drive that came with the laptop.

I know Samsung is popular as well , is it superior to the Intel?

Thanks folks

A:Is the Intel 530 SSD worth buying for a two and half year old laptop?

Any SSD will be a massive improvement over the HDD. You won't notice much difference in performance if you buy a top of the range model or a cheap one other than benchmarks.

The Samsung Evo's seem to be the hot drive at the moment that won't break the bank. I recently got a 250GB one myself and know many other people that are very happy with them.

Just yesterday they hit the market.

My workplace has actually had some given to us as demos from a few weeks back(We are an Intel Partner), but rather then let us employees play with them they were locked up in inventory.,1558,1777753,00.asp

(got the link from slashdot)

They top out at 3.6ghz. Can't wait to see how they perform against the Athlon64/Athlon64-FX. Oh boy!

So, who of you intel fans out there is going to gobble one up?

BBC News - Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year
Microsoft has announced that its next operating system will be offered as a free upgrade to owners of devices running Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Phone.
The announcement marks a change in strategy to its previous policy of charging for major updates.
The offer, which is limited to the OS's first year of release, may aid its adoption.

It's an 'about time' move - however, I'd happily pay for a version that was easier to manage. Windows 8.1 servicing is like trying to clear a minefield with a stick.
XP and 7 just ... work. Easy to manage, easy to trouble shoot. What was so difficult about this 8.x release? If 10 is just a re-dressed version of 8.1 I won't bother.
Waiting for the Tech specs to appear.

A:Free for a year? That's not the point.

What's wrong with Windows 8.1? I've been using Windows 8.1 since last summer, and upgraded directly from Windows 7. Reinstalled all my programs, did my own tweak, not even using a Start Menu Shell and I never had a single issue with it at all. If I'm looking for something under Windows 8.1, I can usually find it pretty quickly.

I've seen topics that dance all around this, but never exactly match my scenario. I have Win 7 computers on a domain that have been accessing older network shares since they were set up 2-4 years ago. In the last few weeks, one very critical PC
cannot access an older (Server 2003) share over the network, though other Win 7 computers can. I worked on it this issue for 3 weeks, including reading and trying everything in every post that resembles this problem. None of it worked. I
bought a brand new Win 7 64 bit PC and set it up 1.5 weeks ago. It accessed the older shares with no problems. After being on vacation a few days I booted up the PC to continue the deployment and it starting finishing up Windows updates installation.
After that was done I could NOT ACCESS THE OLDER SHARES!

It is obviously an update causing this and it has done it on a brand new computer which worked last week and did not work after Windows Updates were installed. SO, here's MY question: Does anyone at Microsoft or elsewhere have a clue as to which
update would have caused this? The updates were downloaded on 7/1/16 and finished installing today (7/13/16) after being shut down for a week.

This is crazy! Please help!

I made this system myself and haven't been able to get any video up. I bought a DDR 128 MG RAM GeForce FX card, and it's 8X AGP, but I think the requirements don't say anything about going that high.

Question is, can a TOO good video card like that not allow me to see anything? DO I have to downgrade to something else to see something. I mean they systems sounds like it's running, but I can't see anything.

Any advise would be good since, I haven't gotten a reply at ALL....

A:older D850GB Intel MOBO and 8x AGP

AGP 8X is backward compatible with 2X and 4X - but the board must support 1.5V cards, if it ONLY supports 3.3 V cards it will not work.

There are compatiblity issues between some cards and some motherboards, sometimes a BIOS update is needed.

Also make sure the card is seated correctly in the slot.

I assume this system worked with another AGP video card?

Recently I installed the Windows 10 update. I then asked a technician to restore Windows 7. After completing the process he claimed the harddrive had "bad sectors" and lost all the personal files for 2015. It was strange that what he recovered matched what was on the back-up in the computer and my external harddrive. Does this make any sense? As a photographer over 10,000 photos were lost!

A:Recently I upgraded to Windows 10 and then decided to go back to Windows 7.

Well...I would ask these questions of "the technician" that I could understand just what steps were taken and why. is it that "the technician" made a "recovery" that doesn't include data files on the system?
If a clean install took place to install Win 7 anew...or a restore-to-factory-defaults...then it's possible that they desired files were overwritten by "the technician".
There is data-recovery software that any user can try...but before I tried such, I would want to know a lot more than you have posted here.
System manufacturer and model?

Visit V3 Software Store to avail this offer.

This is a ONE day promo, which will be available at V3 Software stores, between midday CET (central European time) Tuesday 31st of August and midday CET 1st of September 2010.

A:AVG AntiVirus 9, Free 1 year License

I must be too early since it shows AVG 9 onsale for the reduced price without any mention of the promotion as of yet. The AVG page there is seen at V3 Software Store - AVG Anti-Virus 9.0 [3 PC, 1 Year] - 62% off RRP

Don't confuse that with the other AVG link for the Internet Security 9 found above the av program on the main page.

Upon going to see if the giveaway was up the buy option wants you to fill up everything plus an additional S&H charge likely for the cd itself. The alarm bells rang however when clicking on the "try now" option as seen in the image here where the VIPRE Premium firewall kicked in. Something is wrong somewhere! since the firewall has been 100% accurate every time it has blocked any site!
