From time to time I use the "HP SoftPaq Download Manager" (HPSPDM) to update the soft of my EliteBook 8770w machine. But lately few SoftPaqs are causing me troubles:  Whenever I try to install them, the "HP SoftPaq Download Manager" forces me to restart the PC and after that the SoftPaqs reappear in the HPSPDM with status "Newer version available" ! How to find out what's going on? Does the HPSPDM creates some kind of a installation log?  P.S. This issue is not vital for my PC, but drives me crazy that such a "enterprise software" behaves like that.

May I ask some of the Admins to move this to the "Notebook-Software-and-How-To-Questions" section.

How do I unpack, but not install, SoftPaqs?

View Solution.

A:FAQ(23): Unpacking downloaded SoftPaqs

You can unpack a SoftPaq by running it with a few command line switches.  To do this, open a Windows command box and refer to the following information:Unpacking a SoftPaq fileSp#####.exe ?pdf ?f<path> -s WhereSP####.exe is the Softpaq to unpack.-pdf is a run time switch that overrides the build parameters.-f<Path> is a run time switch that overrides the default path set at build time.-s instructs the package to unpack in silent mode skipping the welcome, license and directory screens.EXAMPLE:At the command box prompt (with Administrator rights to prevent access issues) go to the directory where the SoftPaq is and type the following: sp59909.exe -pdf -fC:\SWSetup\sp59909 -s

Hello, I'm dealing with this issue since Monday and it's driving me nuts. I want do deploy the newest driver with the SSM for our Notebooks 820 G2 via USB Drive. Downloading and preparing seems to work with the SDM. I prepared the SSM and the USB Drive like it's said in the documentation, but when I start the SSM in update mode the SSM window pops up and closes without any error. It seems like the SSM doesn't find any packages to install and just finishes without doing anything. Becaus of that, I wanted to get a logfile, but the SSM seems to just ignore my demand. The downloaded files look like this:  I wonder why there is no *.cfg file but a *.html file in the folder. The latest documentation I could find was published in 2014. In this documentation there is no word about any *.html files in the directory, but there should be a *.cfg file.  This is my commandline entry to start the program: E:\HP\Treiber\SSM\SSM E:\HP\Treiber\SSM\SSM.exe /accept This is the commandline entry to start the program and create a logfileE:\HP\Treiber\SSM\SSM E:\HP\Treiber\SSM\SSM.exe /accept /debug /log:"E:\HP\LOG"  I'm pretty helpless and have no idea what to do next. Hope you guys can help me :-/  Sorry if there are any mistakes, my english is a bit rusty. best regards Jan-Eric

A:SSM does not install preloaded softpaqs

I'm also having the same problem but only with our brand new HP EliteOne 800 G2 PC's. I've updated SSM to include the drivers I'm missing (which is plenty) and launching SSM as a part of my Windows Deployment (WDS). I'm installing Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit also. Every other HP PC make / model I have runs SSM fine. Almost all the drivers are typically installed and the EliteDesk 800 (G1) and EliteOne 800 (also G1) both get all their drivers fine via SSM. I also include a "Extra_Drivers" directory within the SSM Softpaq's there I will typically expand missing drivers. After Windows runs a Windows Update (part of WDS), these extra drivers are installed. I've had to update the HP Softpaq Download Manager to to capture the "HP EliteOne G2 23-inch Non-touch All-in-One PC" which is great.  SSM runs fine because the first component is executing Diskpart that creates the hidden partition for HP recovery. This runs perfectly on the EliteOne 800 G2, but NO other driver softpaq's are installing and the same missing drivers remain after SSM has finished. I always set WDS to reboot the PC after SSM has executed which is the standard task sequence I have built. If SSM reboots the PC then WDS returns an error.  SSM command being lanched by WDSstart /wait c:\windows\SSM\ssm.exe c:\windows\SSM /accept /noreboot /nu /nolog /to:600 /ti:"SSM executing from the Windows SSM Directory" Why are none of the new EliteOne 800 G2 softpaq's running? I cannot figure out how to get all of my email stores moved from my old PC (Windows Vista/Windows Mail) to my new PC (Windows 7/Outlook 2013). Is there a way to successfully do this or do I need to give up?? When trying to use the export function for messages in windows mail it comes up with an error message to say 'The export could not be performed. An error accured while initializing MAPI.' All my email accounts are POP3. I did find the email stores and transfered them manually to the new PC but I opened them on the new PC in outlook then only a small fraction of emails was there and they were all jumbled up and my folder structure did not transfer. Can this transfer be done or not? Hope to get some useful answer. Cheers, Torsten.

I own several computers. Some PC's and a mid-2010 iMac 27 inch. Windows 10 upgrade worked fine on my PC's. After I signed up for the upgrade on my iMac Bootcamp running Windows 7 Ultimate, Apple announced it will not support my particular iMac version. I
have tried to no avail to stop the Windows 10 upgrade, which has failed several times. I have uninstalled Windows updates associated with the upgrade: KB 3035583, KB 3033929, and KB2952664, and hidden them in Windows Update. Any suggestions as to how to stop
Windows 10 upgrade? Any work around to install the upgrade on my iMac?

Hey all,

Firstly I hope i have posted this in the right forum.

As the name states I can not use any of my windows security I know this is because of a fake anti virus i had at one point, I also can't install any other virus protection or firewalls onto my computer.

I'm assuming this has to do with what the virus has done with my computers registry, correct me if I'm wrong.

I want to restore my registry back to its default I have tried the reg restore /? command in cmd but it comes up with (see attached picture) and am not sure what this means or for the next step for me to take to continue the command.

Is there any down side to restoring my registry to its default as well?

I have an HP laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 on an HP Pavilion dm4-Notebook PC.
It has 6.00 GB of installed memory and a 64 bit operating system. Windows is activated and I have Product ID.

I get part of my mail and part of it can no longer be opened or deleted. I have figured out that when I rolled back to Windows 7 a second database was created into which mail is also going. How to I rectify this issue?

I am not very technically inclined, so I need very specific instructions on how to fix this. Is there anyone out there who will help me. I have been laid off from work and have no funds to take this into a shop to be repaired, and I am frantic!

A:Rolled Back Windows 10 to Windows 7 - Now big Windows Live Mail issues

If the accounts are IMAP you can recreate them in the mail client and it will download all the mail afresh from the remote server. But if they are POP you have to work with the local database. Even if they are IMAP I would make a backup of the existing database.

I implement Point of Sale systems. Currently our POS network may have a mix of Windows platforms, mostly 7 Pro and 8.1. Windows updates need to be installed, but we handle this process manually, with the setting "download updates but let me choose
when to install them". I'm looking for a way that our clients can sit down periodically on the main computer and install updates (during non-business hours), and also push them out to the other computers in the workgroup (which may be on a different OS).
Is this possible?

just curious on what the differences were between xp pro and xp media center edition and then what was better about vista...

A:windows xp vs windows xp media center edition vs windows vista

Vista isn't out yet and there are going to be many versions of it, more than XP. XP Pro is the professional version, it has more options open, security options and all that stuff, but these options aren't exactly built for people who don't know what they're doing. So yea... more "professional" options. Media center is like the OS for really dumb ppl who want just want to watch media. It's all basic-like (, but it has lots of apps for TV tuners and dvd players and all that so you can use your comp as a TV.

Can someone tell me how to get my windows vista mail to windows 7 live mail?

My original Windows Mail is currently on my Vista Gateway PC.

I recently purchased a new PC (Win 7) and want to move, copy, restore (whatever) all of that original mail from my Vista PC to my new Win 7 PC.

Some facts to know:

Email is on my Vista PC, version 6 Windows Mail.

I have set up windows Mail on my new PC (Win 7) and version is Windows Mail 2012

I already have some email on my new Win 7 PC.

Can I export mAIL from my old PC to an external hard drive and use that as the tool to import Mail on new pc?

Anxiously awaiting a response that will let me do this.

this is a previous post on your site i have a similar problem with a few differences:

''Hi all

Short version is that I bought a new Hp laptop with pre-installed Windows 8. Didn't like W8 for many reasons so tried to install windows 7 according to guided installation instructions from a techie site google took me to. The installation stopped after 30 minutes, referring to a driver issue I believe, and I had to revert to loading up using Windows 8 again to get out of the dos error screen.

Now the system tells me how I get (inconsistent) blue screens although I don't physically see a blue screen, and every day I boot up, it reverts to the 'Windows Boot Manager' screen, telling me a recent hardware or software change has resulted in something missing, damaged, etc.

Additional message when in the Boot Manager reads:

File: \$Windows-BT\Windows\System32\winload.efi
Status: 0xc0000428
Info: the digital signature for this file could not be verified.

Although Im not an expert, it seems to me that the file path mentioned above relates to the part installation of windows 7 - if so, how can I remove the part installation, clean the system up, and reluctantly return to W8?

[btw - unable to get help from Windows or Samsung so far] ""

hello ohana
those are all part of the os. but if you go to control panel > programs and features > turn windows features on or off (left hand side) you can turn some of them off. i dont know about uninstalling them.
as for IE , that is the only browser microsoft will let do the updates. so if you plan on updating .dont uninstall it.

I purchased a new notebook with Windows 7 in October. During the first weeks I uninstalled McAfee and replaced the harddrive. Since November Windows Update fails with error messages and defender does not start anymore. I made several virus scans (complete) with multiple antivirus programs but nothing showed up.Since it took my days to install various software, I do not want to re-install W7. I also have no good backup that I could restore. I am really surprised that there is not even a single entry regarding the error code in the Microsoft Knowledge base or elsewhere.I really would appreciate help.

So after I have prepared the notebook for a user, I normally take a 'windows' image, (backup) before I SOPHOS encrypt. (as I have had this happen before). Since Windows did not load up on this notebook, I have applied the image twice after the notebook fails
to load windows, the third time,  I completely reformatted the drive (erased) and applied the image again. The notebook was working just fine before I applied SOPHOS and run fine before I apply SOPHOS.

Any ideas??

If you decide you don't want or don't like Windows 10 and you want to downgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you have 30 days from the upgrade date to do it, or else you'll need to do a clean reinstall.

You can read about it here.

Each download contains updated versions of several .dll files that are included with Microsoft Access 2000, Microsoft Office 2000 Developer, Microsoft Visual Basic version 6.0 or later, and other Microsoft products that incorporate Microsoft Jet database engine 4.x.

Note: Installing the latest Jet update is an important step toward keeping your Jet database in top working condition.

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT

Before you install this update, you must install Jet 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) or later installed. If the file msjet40.dll is version 4.00.2927.4 or later, you are running Jet 4.0 SP3 or later. You can download Jet 4.0 SP3 from the Data Access Downloads Web page on MSDN.

I had Windows Defender installed under Win-7.  I did the upgrade to Windows-10 (straightforward).
However, when booting from cold, and after logging in, a message box has always appeared saying:
Windows Defender
This app has been turned off and isn't monitoring your computer.
If you're using another app to check for malicious or unwanted software, use Security and Maintenance to check that app's status.
I'm not using any other antivirus - just whatever came with Windows-10.  I originally thought that this would be some wrinkle that would get fixed by an update, but it's still there.
I've looked for ways to uninstall Windows Defender, but can't find a way to do it.  Typing "Defender" into the Search bar brings up an option saying "Windows Defender Desktop App", which when clicked also brings up the message box
mentioned above.
Is there any way to get rid of this message box?

We recently did a Windows Update to our Windows Vista Home Premium operated system.

This is the update:
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (KB936330)

Installation date: &#8206;10/&#8206;09/&#8206;2009 2:42 AM

Installation status: Successful

Update type: Important

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is an update to Windows Vista that addresses key feedback from our customers. It says it did it on the 10th, but we actually installed it on the 9th. It always off by a day even if the date and time on our computer is right.

HOWEVER, this has changed the appearance of our system back to something that would be on a Windows 95 or earlier computer. I am very bugged by this and I'm wondering what's happened.

We installed an update for a 'Service Pack 2', hoping that it would fix this problem, but we turn on the computer this morning and nothing's changed.

A quick query... I have a Windows 7 install to which I added a Windows 8.1 install on a separate partition. This updated the bootloader software to Windows 8.1.
Now when I boot, Windows 8.1 boots and presents a graphical menu to select 8.1 or 7.
If I select 8.1 it goes straight to the logon screen of 8.1 because it has already loaded. If I select Windows 7 however, the machine restarts, then goes into 7 (Obviously because it needs to "unload" the Windows 8.1 environment.
My question is, how (technically) is this trick achieved?
Because of the restart of the computer, I am assuming a "one time" flag is set somewhere in the bootloader environment telling it to load Windows 7?

Okay, so here's the deal. I had Windows Service Pack 2. Everything was just lovely, then I decided to FINALLY upgrade to Service Pack 3 because some high end Adobe products I was installing suggested it for better compatibility. Aiesh, so I took the plunge and tried to upgrade to Windows Service Pack 3. I was smart because of all the horror stories though and did a full backup up all my data including system state, etc. I set a system restore point, the whole nine yards. I upgraded with no problems but when the computer restarted it do so, got past POST, and the windows boot or load screen popped up with the loading bar. . . but windows never loaded! A lot of people report having problems where it get's past the windows load screen and just keeps cycle rebooting. Or it'll load to the user selection screen/welcome screen. Hi sirdanceal0t,
I had a similar problem when Windows XP SP3 was released it was only designed for Intel processors, so if you have a AMD processor it will cause your system not to load, if you are running a AMD processor if i were you try and get back to the System Restore Point or if that fails reimage your pc and just before installing SP3 looks for the patch/fix for your processor model, then install SP3 and it should all be fine.

On the other hand if you have a Intel processor i woulldn't know what to advise.

Windows 10 will possibly be the last version of Windows with a version number. After Windows 10, Microsoft will likely continue with updating Windows system components without releasing a full new version of Windows.

A developer evangelist of Microsoft stated that Windows 10 would be ?the last version of Windows?, during Microsoft?s Ignite conference, according to tech website TheVerge.

?Recent comments at Ignite about Windows 10 are reflective of the way Windows will be delivered as a service bringing new innovations and updates in an ongoing manner, with continuous value for our consumer and business customers?, according to a Microsoft spokesman when asked about the statement by the technology website.

Since I upgraded from WinXP to Win7, I've noticed that C:\Windows files are located in C:\Windows.old\Windows. This happened because, while trying to install Win7, one of my RAM's chips seemed to be broken, stopping the process several times. So, at the end, I throwed it away and I'm with Win7, BUT, with the multiple attempts of install it, the system, apparently, overwrote the OS and, now, I'm using the "old" one.

Does someone have ANY ideas? I could reinstall it, yeah, but I already have some programs and huge stuff so, i prefer to make it as last option.

Since now, I thank you.

A:C:\Windows files are located in C:\Windows.old\Windows

That folder contains your old OS. Once you have everything needed from it you can delete it using Disk Cleanup's Clean Up System Files option. Disk Cleanup - Open and Use - Windows 7 Help Forums

You will have another C:\WIndows folder in the root of C drive for the new Win7 install. Do you see it? It could not be in Windows.old.

I was surprised at the last minute after downloading Windows 10 free upgrade, to find out its without Windows Media Center.
I use my USB TV tuner with the media center pack purchased online "everyday". I got over (15) programs recorded with the-
media center, to make it essential for documentation on my hard drive, and to know why I bought a personal computer.
To see Windows 10 "upset" recorded documentation with no-media center, was a (let-down) by Microsoft's programming of the operating system.
I did the "rollback" to Windows 8.1 Pro in a matter of minutes.
Microsoft should consider the (full-value) need, with Windows Media Center added to the operating system.

Just read an article that claims that Microsoft will automatically install Windows 10 on your computer if you have Windows 7 & 8. This is bad because I personally will never use it.
"Happy using Windows 7 or Windows 8? You might not be happy much longer, because Microsoft has announced Windows 10 will now start installing automatically on Windows 7 and Windows 8 PCs?
The development sees Microsoft follow through on its controversial October roadmap which said Windows 10 would have its status changed in 2016 to become a ?Recommended? upgrade in Windows Update. In basic terms this means anyone who uses Windows 7 or Windows 8 with default Windows Update settings (the vast majority) will now see Windows 10 begin installing by itself.
The good news is Windows 7 and Windows 8 users will still have the power to interrupt the installation once it has started, but this still represents by far the most aggressive measure Microsoft has taken to achieve its stated goal of one billion Windows 10 installations by 2017."
Also google "how to stop Windows 10 from using your PC's bandwidth to update strangers' systems". Just WOW.

Hey all. I'm rather new here and am semi-competent with computers, but I have no idea what to do here.

One of my laptops is running Windows XP x64 and I actually DON'T have a copy of Windows 7. After the laptop originally got a virus I downgraded from Windows 7 Professional 64 bit system. But for some odd reason, now that I downgraded it's not picking up wireless capabilities, so I'm hoping to upgrade. I downloaded an .iso file, simply because I used my friend's 7 disc to upgrade my other laptop. He lost the disc, so I'm using an .iso as I said above. When I go to start the .iso file I get the following message: Windows Setup: This installation disc isn't compatible with your version of Windows. To upgrade, you need the correct installation disc. For more information, check your computer's system information. To install a new copy of Windows, restart (boot) your computer using the installation disc, and then select Custom (advanced).

I have no idea what to do now. I'm upgrading to the EXACT same OS that the laptop had previously. I've tried using Windows Ultimate and Windows Home Premium 64 bit and I get nothing, the same stuff. Any suggestions? As I said, I do not have an actual disc, and I'm running off of an .iso file. Help would be much appreciated seeing as how I need this laptop fixed soon. Thank you!

A:Windows upgrade problems. Windows XP to Windows 7

So this laptop originally shipped with Win 7 Professional 64-bit and that is what the existing Product Key is for?

If so, the next question would be where did you get the ISO? I assume you burned the ISO to DVD?

A:Installing Windows Vista, Windows ME and Windows XP

I'm not sure you will be able to create a triple boot with ME, XP and Vista without reinstalling Vista - and using a recovery CD will probably reinstall Vista on the C drive.
The easiest (and best) way, IMHO, is to install the oldest OS (ME) first - on the C drive. Then install XP on the D drive in a dual boot configuration with ME followed by installing Vista on the E drive to complete the triple boot (but again the recovery CD will most likely mess it up).

In your case the installations of the different Windows versions would have to be performed "backwards" - first Vista, then XP and finally ME - and AFAIK that is impossible.

Installing XP after Vista isn't too complicated - read this. The trouble is you can't install ME after XP or Vista.

If you had two hard drives it would be possible to "fool" the computer - Keep Vista on the first HDD. With the first HDD disconnected you could install ME, then XP on different partitions on the second HDD. After re-connecting HDD #1 you could either use a "boot manager program" or choose which HDD to boot in BIOS.

I installed a full version of Windows 8 on to a new clean hard drive and all seems to be working well except for one very unusual issue.

I went in to Control Paneland accessed ?Windows 7 File Recovery? in Windows 8 (back up), just as I did in the past with Windows 7 and made an image of my computer. The image was successfully made and put on one of my physically separate secondary drives (Drive E).

Once I made the system image, I wanted to test that it could be accessed in the event I needed to use it in the future.

I restarted Windows 8 with the original Windows 8 install/repair disk, through my CD/DVD/Blue ray drive and selected the ?repair? function and was able to go through the steps where it was detected and ready to be installed if needed.

When I was able to see that the ?image? was recognized and ready to use (if ever needed) I clicked on ?Cancel?so as to not allow the procedure to start and all shut down as expected.

I removed the Windows 8 disk from my drive and restarted my computer as normal.

Here is where the problem starts.

The system booted up and the blue windows 8 logo displayed as normal and the little white circular motion below the logo started in its circular motion, signifying that things are happening. The problem was ?that is all that happened?.

The computer was stuck in a forever startup. After several minutes, I shut down the computer tried it again and same thing, it was stuck in virtual start-up.

Three weeks ago, my husband got a popup for windows antivirus pro, and being non computer savvy, clicked it and of course, it installed. It disabled the computer almost completely. No programs ran, it changed the internet settings, and made things difficult to do. I looked here for instructions to remove it, and after running spybot s&d and combing the registries, things returned to normal and I thought I had it contained.

Monday- he gets another one. This time Windows police pro. Again I turned to this forum for help. This one is nastier than the first. I was able to get into the task manager on my partition, and on my partition, found the files that I could and deleted them. I had to run exefix to get anything to run at all. I disabled antiproex in the msconfig file. While nosing around, I found shortcuts to windows antivirus pro, which lead to the PAVRM.exe file, but it's nowhere to be found on my computer, so I think I have 2 going at once. I still cannot get anything to run. I downloaded malwarebytes - won't even open. Spybot won't open. SUPERantispyware only runs through the alternate start, and then just terminates without notice. Good Day Forum,
Name is Ivan.
I guess I'll start of with some details about my system and the issue I'm having.
It is a bit unique given the OS isn't the usual XP, it is Windows XP "Embedded", but I'm hoping it's not something that will hinder your ability to help me.
Now the issue is, and I'll be straight up honest, I'm assuming has to do with a P2P filesharing and is very similar in it's essence to the FBI virus.
* The USB keyboard locked out and render the naviagation keys useless upon entering the Boot Menu.
* Windows does not boot past the splashscreen.
I was able to get the keyboard to work by using a PS/2 Adapter I had on hand, giving me the ability to navigate through the Boot Menu and moved on to the next step.
Since my problem symptoms closely resembled the virus mentioned, I have proceded to follow the basic solution people use.
Downloaded HitmanPro App and attempted to make a bootable flashdrive. But unfortunately the only other computer I have is a 64bit Windows machine and I couldn't run a 32bit version I would need to use for the Infected (I'm assuming) machine.
With the Hitman app off the list of quick solutions I turned to AVG Rescue tool which is said to be less sensitive to the version of OS and was faced with yet another issue. When in Boot Menu and attempting to choose USB FDD (Flashdrive?) or any other option, the machine still attempts to boot from HDD and I'm hit with the windows splashscreen that loads for a few seconds and... A:Windows XP Embedded, Windows won't boot past splash screen, Keyboard disabled.

Got a 32bit version of Hitman app and made bootable Flash drive.

Got into Boot menu with a PS/2 keyboard.
Took a few tries to get it to boot from flashdrive, but in the end Windows started up and let me log in.
Prior to log in I get an Error titled "savedump.exe - Entry Point Not Found" ...and message:

The procedure entry point SymSetSymWithAddr64 could not be located in the dynamic link library DBGHELP.dll
Mouse works, but the system stopped recognizng PS/2 keyboard, so I hooked up one through USB and was able to log in.
Everything loads up alright and seems to be in order, except a few files system files missing (i.e.; i8042prt.sys) and I get a message to insert a Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3 (never had one)
I have scanned the system with Hitman - no threats found except a few tracking cookies.
I'm not exactly computer savvy when it comes to dealing with anything that wouldn't let Windows boot, but overall a very strange case here. I don't even know what happened or if the tools I used are responsible for my problem's resolution.
I got no responces anywhere I went online...perhaps because I have weird Windows chopped up speciffically to deal with my machine's firmare (it's a desktop Dental 3D Scanner), I just have a message to anyone having any problems - Don't give up. ;)
Not to say this forum didn't help me at all, lots of great material here and I'll be sticking around to read up more. Thank yo... Read more

Whilst performing a Windows 8 -> Windows 8.1 update on my ASUS Vivobook S200E, an option popped up asking me whether I wanted to reboot my computer.
I chose "Reboot later", and then manually restarted the machine. (Apparently this might be the cause of the error since there are graphic drivers that get deleted during the update that get replaced when being restarted)
After doing this, every time I booted, I would see the ASUS splash screen as if the computer were booting normally, and then the screen would go black.
At this point, I turned the machine off, and tried using Shift+F8 to open the Advanced Startup Options. Here, I tried using command prompt and running "bootrec.exe /fixmbr", which seemingly had no impact on fixing the issue.
After this, I rebooted, and tried entering Safe Mode.
Whilst doing this, on the first driver that loaded, there was an error and the BIOS menu was brought up.
I quit the BIOS, not feeling at all qualified to handle whatever it was and the computer restarted, saying that the a driver was either corrupted or missing (I do apologise, the computer did this too quickly for me to take notes of the exact driver)
Ever since then, the ASUS logo flashes up for two seconds tops, and there appears to be no way of entering Advanced advanced startup settings - pressing ALT-F9 still gives a blank screen, as do Esc and F2. Have tried the ASUS diagnostic link ( Read more

Hello, Headguard
Welcome to TSF

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave, and if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have "vanished" .

One machine at a time please. Let's start with the Vista machine. Please run these instructions on the vista machine. When we're done with it we'll do the XP one.

Yesterday, when I double clicked on an MP3 I'd just downloaded, Media Player didn't start. I tried using a launcher to open it. When that didn't work, I tried opening it from Explorer, but no go.

Today I wanted to run a search to make sure a backup operation had worked correctly. When I clicked the Search Button I got a blank Search Companion the color of my desktop.

Usually, I use another player to listen to music, even though WMP is my default player. And usually, I use Search GT instead of Windows Search when I'm looking for a file. So - I don't know exactly when the applications quit. I am wondering if it has anything to do with Windows latest update. However, I don't see anyone else posting about this problem.

My system is fully patched. I ran a virus scan and got nothing. Event viewer doesn't show any errors. Very odd. Computer is running fine, no problems except for this.

Suggestions would be welcome.

I purchased 2 new Dell OptiPlex 3010 desktop computers that came with Windows 7 Professional operating system with SP1. There were no Microsoft updates installed yet. After I added one of these Dell computers to the Windows Server 2008 Active Directory, I was not able to download several items. Below are several examples:

1) I downloaded the Norton anti-virus installation file. This file is not the full installation of Norton; it is more of a file where you execute it and it will download the full installation from the Internet like from their Norton web site. So when I executed this installation file, it does not download the full installation files. It just hung at the screen saying “Downloading” and it will finally stop with an error (don’t remember the error message).

Note: If I have the full Norton installation file then I am able to install it on this computer with no problems.

2) I downloaded the Adobe Reader installation file. This file is not the full installation of Adobe Reader; it is more of a file where you execute it and it will download the full installation from the Internet like from their Adobe web site. So when I executed this installation file, it hung at the downloading part and then it will error out with a “Actionlist Not Found” message.

Note: If I have the full Adobe Reader installation file then I am able to install it on this computer with no problems.

I bought A dell XPS 710, roughly mid September 2007. The pc was for me and college work. As i lived away from family during college terms the pc stayed with me until summer time. On saturday the pc was put into the back seat of the car with car belt + other items pinning it to the seat beside me.

When i got home i insured i got the pc to my room safely yet when i started the pc i got Windows cannot start as there is a file missing or corrupt (press R to repair)

i put in the OS cd given by Dell with the pc purchase and attempted to Repair and attempt a reinstall of the OS the missing or corrupt file when i get a blue screen of death including
*** Stop: 0X000000C2(0X00000043X, 0XCA514000,0X00000000, 0X00000000)

i attempted also to make boot to cd this priority for booting, yet decided to change it back to old since there was no point.

I am hoping someone here can offer me assistance, oh yes also! (i took the HD, put it into this pc as a slave, copied the important files to an external in the hope that i could reinstall windows.

At this stage i am stumped, i think the HD may have been damaged from excessive vibrations caused by the pot holes(trenches) that existed on the journey. Irregardless i would appreciate the assistance.

A:Windows 7: In normal mode virtual memory gets reset to zero and Windows Update is blocked

There are three other things, but I do not know if they are significant.

1. On my first bootup yesterday (the first bootup after the installation of the QQ upgrade) the computer stopped during bootup and I got a black-and-white screen telling me that the power source was not recognized, and to press F1 to continue, F2 to ..., etc. I pressed F1 to continue, and when I arrived in normal mode I saw that the computer was recognizing the battery just fine. Since then, however, I get this same problem every time I reboot the computer, unless I first remove the battery, hold the power button down for 5 seconds, and then reinsert the battery. I have had this problem a few times in the past, perhaps one or two times per year, and that is how I have always resolved the problem, apparently a problem of residual charge. But until yesterday I had never had the problem repeatedly. So it might be that instead of malware I simply have a bunch of corruptions to Windows that occurred during the upgrade of QQ. (But due to the aggressive way QQ hides itself and protects itself, I still suspect the presence of malware.)

2. When I booted up this morning into safe mode I received a popup message -- one that I received 1-2 times yesterday after I had tried inserting values for virtual memory -- telling me that duplicate paging files had been created, which might cause a problem. I checked how much virtual memory was allocated, and it was back to "no virtual memory". I specified once agai... Read more

The Windows PowerShell 1.0 MUI Language Pack runs only on MUI versions of Windows, in which the Windows interface can be displayed in multiple languages. It displays the Windows PowerShell 1.0 interface in Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. For detailed information, see Knowledge Base Article 926141.

The MUI Language Pack does not include the Windows PowerShell 1.0 program. If you are running a MUI version of Windows, first install an English-language version of Windows PowerShell 1.0 and then install the MUI Language Pack for Windows PowerShell 1.0. For information about the installation packages for the English-language versions of Windows PowerShell 1.0, see Knowledge Base article 926139.

Each version of Windows PowerShell 1.0 is associated with its own version-specific MUI language pack. The MUI interface works properly only when you have installed the same versions of the Windows PowerShell program and the MUI language pack. If you have any other versions of Windows PowerShell 1.0 on the computer, uninstall the MUI language pack and the other version of Windows PowerShell 1.0 before installing the new version and the new MUI language pack. For details, see Knowledge Base Article 926141.

You do not have to restart Windows after installing the MUI Language Pack for Windows PowerShell 1.0.

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me.
